Recent evidence suggests that only about 1 in 5 U.S. adults has a friend on the political "other side" (Dunn, 2020). Although these interpartisan friendships are uncommon, they play a critical role in catalyzing empathy, reducing prejudice, furthering justice, and even restoring democracy, as suggested by the theory of civic friendship (Goering, 2003; Kahane, 1999; Rawlins, 2009). In the present study, we drew on national data from the Interfaith Diversity Experiences and Attitudes Longitudinal Survey (IDEALS) to examine the personal and contextual factors that predict interpartisan friendship formation among 5,762 college students attending 118 higher education institutions in the United States. The findings revealed the constellation of individual, social, and institutional contributors to students' capacities to reach across political differences in their friendships. We offer guidance for how college educators can support the development of these relationships that may open a path toward empathy and healing in our polarized society.

For too many community college students, transferring to a four-year institution for a bachelor's degree (i.e., vertical transfer) remains an unrealized aspiration. Prior research suggests that forms of capital can assist students in realizing their goals. Therefore, we sought to explore how relationships both within and outside of their institutions serve as sources of capital to support students' vertical transfer journeys. Utilizing a qualitative research design, we applied Putnam's (2000) two forms of social capital (bridging and bonding) and eight social support-related constructs from Moser's (2013) expanded transfer student capital framework to data from focus groups and interviews with 33 pre- and post-transfer students. We found that participants actively constructed a patchwork of supportive relationships with both institutional agents and individuals external to the institution, which they utilized to search for, gather, and employ transfer capital. Our findings highlight that relationships outside of institutions are as crucial as relationships within the institution as sources of capital for vertical transfer students, suggesting a need to incorporate extra-institutional relationships into transfer capital frameworks and institutional initiatives to support transfer students. We also recommend institutions invest in programs designed to build students' social and transfer capital.

In this program description, the authors explain how a doctoral-level embedded service-learning opportunity, part of Project PURPLE (Preparing Urban and Rural Personnel as Leaders in Education), a collaborative personnel preparation training program, taught future faculty to meet the needs of urban and rural schools in high-need settings. The collaboration between two large institutions in the U.S. same state offered scholars a unique opportunity to engage in teaching, research, and service across institutions. For the service-learning project, teams of cross-institution scholars partnered with consultants from a regional special education cooperative that provides technical assistance to a large rural geographical area. Eleven scholars completed seven diverse service projects, ranging from training education professionals to engaging caregivers. This description discusses these projects, along with the benefits to the scholars and the regional cooperative. It also explores implications for practice for future personnel preparation collaborations and possible avenues for future research.

Although 80% of entering community college students express a desire to earn a bachelor's degree, only about 30% transfer to a four-year institution and even fewer complete a bachelor's degree within six years. The Loss/Momentum Framework (LMF) is a tool for identifying interactions between an institution and its students that can either propel (momentum points) or impede (loss points) progress toward degree completion. This study utilized the LMF to understand the loss and momentum points commonly encountered by students at various phases of their vertical transfer journeys. Using a qualitative research design, we conducted focus groups and interviews with 33 pre- and post-transfer students from a sending community college and a receiving four-year university in Ohio. Sources of momentum included positive interactions with institutional agents (especially advisors and faculty members), institutional programs and processes that conveyed a transfer receptive culture, and easy-to-navigate transfer processes. In contrast, loss points included inaccessible or unhelpful advising as well as opaque and poorly communicated practices and policies regarding degree requirements, credit transfer, and financial aid. Our findings underscore the need for sending and receiving institutions to ensure advising practices, credit transfer policies, and financial aid processes are accessible and transparent to remove barriers and boost momentum. We also encourage institutions to invest in opportunities for transfer students to build relationships with institutional agents, which are particularly important for supporting minoritized students, and with peers.

Noninvasive brain stimulation of the primary motor cortex has been shown to alter therapeutic outcomes in stroke and other neurological conditions, but the precise mechanisms remain poorly understood. Determining the impact of such neurostimulation on the neural processing supporting motor control is a critical step toward further harnessing its therapeutic potential in multiple neurological conditions affecting the motor system. Herein, we leverage the excellent spatio-temporal precision of magnetoencephalographic (MEG) imaging to identify the spectral, spatial, and temporal effects of high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) on the neural responses supporting motor control. Participants (N = 67) completed three HD-tDCS visits (anode, cathode, sham), with each involving 20 min of left primary motor cortex stimulation and performance of a simple/complex motor sequencing task during MEG. Whole-brain statistical analyses of beta oscillatory responses revealed stimulation-by-task interaction effects in the left primary motor cortex, right occipitotemporal, and the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortices. Broadly, anodal stimulation induced significantly stronger beta oscillatory responses in these regions during simple movement sequences, while neural responses to complex sequences were not affected by stimulation. En masse, these data suggest that the beta oscillations serving motor planning (i.e., pre-movement) are particularly sensitive to the polarity of noninvasive stimulation and that the impact varies based on the difficulty of the movement sequence.

Background: COVID-19 patients exhibit higher incidence of thrombosis in arteries and veins, including those in lungs. Vasa vasorum, which support large blood vessels, have shown involvement in these pathologic processes. Methods: To further explore the extent of microvascular damage caused by COVID-19 infection, we examined resected main, right, or left pulmonary artery specimens from patients undergoing bilateral lung transplantation for COVID-19– or non–COVID-19–induced pulmonary fibrosis compared with organ donors by histologic and immunohistologic analyses. Results: Vasa vasorum density was found to be higher in specimens procured from patients with COVID-19 and associated with pulmonary artery hypertension compared with lung transplant donors. In addition, we found immunothrombosis within vasa vasorum in specimens from COVID-19 patients with more immune infiltration, including CD15+, CD44+, and CD68+ cells. Conclusions: These findings reveal that COVID-19 affects the vasa vasorum of pulmonary arteries and suggest that infection may lead to large-vessel dysfunction and organ failure.

In recent years, there has been an increase in the adventive establishment and spread of parasitoid wasps outside of their native range. However, lack of taxonomic tools can hinder the efficient screening of field-collected samples to document the establishment and range expansion of parasitoids on continent-wide geographic scales. Here we report that Leptopilina japonica (Hymenoptera, Figitidae), a parasitoid of the globally invasive fruit pest Drosophila suzukii (Diptera, Drosophilidae), is now widespread in much of North America despite not having been intentionally introduced. Surveys in 2022 using a variety of methods detected L. japonica in 10 of 11 surveyed USA States and one Canadian Province where it was not previously known to occur. In most surveys, L. japonica was the most common species of D. suzukii parasitoid found. The surveys also resulted in the detection of Ganaspis cf. brasiliensis (Hymenoptera, Figitidae), the recently-released biological control agent of D. suzukii, in six USA States where it had not previously been found. These new detections are likely a result of intentional biological control introductions rather than spread of adventive populations. A species-specific multiplex PCR assay was developed as a rapid, accurate and cost-effective method to distinguish L. japonica, G. cf. brasiliensis, the closely-related cosmopolitan parasitoid Leptopilina heterotoma (Hymenoptera, Figitidae) and other native parasitoid species. This dataset and the associated molecular tools will facilitate future studies of the spread and ecological impacts of these introduced parasitoids on multiple continents.

An efficient allocation of limited resources in low-income settings offers the opportunity to improve population-health outcomes given the available health system capacity. Efforts to achieve this are often framed through the lens of "health benefits packages" (HBPs), which seek to establish which services the public healthcare system should include in its provision. Analytic approaches widely used to weigh evidence in support of different interventions and inform the broader HBP deliberative process however have limitations. In this work, we propose the individual-based Thanzi La Onse (TLO) model as a uniquely-tailored tool to assist in the evaluation of Malawi-specific HBPs while addressing these limitations. By mechanistically modelling-and calibrating to extensive, country-specific data-the incidence of disease, health-seeking behaviour, and the capacity of the healthcare system to meet the demand for care under realistic constraints on human resources for health available, we were able to simulate the health gains achievable under a number of plausible HBP strategies for the country. We found that the HBP emerging from a linear constrained optimisation analysis (LCOA) achieved the largest health gain-∼8% reduction in disability adjusted life years (DALYs) between 2023 and 2042 compared to the benchmark scenario-by concentrating resources on high-impact treatments. This HBP however incurred a relative excess in DALYs in the first few years of its implementation. Other feasible approaches to prioritisation were assessed, including service prioritisation based on patient characteristics, rather than service type. Unlike the LCOA-based HBP, this approach achieved consistent health gains relative to the benchmark scenario on a year- to-year basis, and a 5% reduction in DALYs over the whole period, which suggests an approach based upon patient characteristics might prove beneficial in the future.

Background: Social responsibility and democratic citizenship are essential outcomes of a college education. Yet limited research has examined how college experiences may relate to students' moral and prosocial development, qualities that ground responsibility and citizenship. Purpose: This research sought to identify the college experiences, including six types of community engagement, associated with moral and prosocial developmental outcomes. Methodology/Approach: Participants (n = 675) completed a survey consisting of items addressing their college experiences, attitudes and beliefs concerning social inequity and responsibility toward others, and six moral and prosocial outcomes. Blocked regression models assessed relationships between predictor variables (experiences and attitudes/beliefs) and the outcomes. Findings/Conclusions: Participation in public service was the only community engagement experience to predict any of the six outcomes. Rather, the attitudes and beliefs students hold seem to have a much greater relationship with moral and prosocial outcomes. Implications: Students' existing attitudes and orientations to moral and prosocial concerns may determine which types of community engagement experiences they are attracted to and how these experiences may influence students' development. Colleges and universities should therefore provide multiple modes of participation in community engagement rather than assuming a single type of engagement fosters all students' development.

Supporting students' friendships across social boundaries is one powerful way in which colleges and universities can contribute to the civic mission of higher education. Using data from the Interfaith Diversity Experiences and Attitudes Longitudinal Survey (IDEALS), a national, multi-institutional study, we examined how institutional conditions and various forms of student engagement predicted the number of interworldview friendships among college students at the end of their first year on campus. Multilevel regression results identified factors at three levels of context (personal/individual, community/institution, and network/group) associated with the number of interworldview friendships at Time 2 (dependent variable). Notably, at the community/institution level, we found the availability of co-curricular opportunities for interworldview engagement to be positively associated with interworldview friendship at the end of the first year, while several other institutional features were negatively associated. At the network/group level, we found positive associations between both formal and informal social engagement and interworldview friendship at the end of the first year, while associations between academic majors and interworldview friendship varied. Although some college students may gravitate toward interworldview friendships regardless of institutional conditions, our results affirm that these relationships thrive when structures are in place to encourage social interactions and cooperation across worldview differences.

The goal of this project was to determine if standardized ileal digestible (SID) lysine provided at 40% above estimated requirements, with the concomitant increase in protein intake, from days 90 to 110 of gestation would stimulate mammary development in gilts. From day 90 of gestation, Yorkshire × Landrace gilts were fed 2.65 kg of either a conventional diet (CTL, control, n = 19) providing 18.6 g/d of SID Lys or a diet providing 26.0 g/d of SID Lys via additional soybean meal (HILYS, n = 19). Both diets were isoenergetic. Jugular blood samples obtained on days 90 and 110 of gestation were used to measure concentrations of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), metabolites, and amino acids (AA). Gilts were necropsied on day 110 ± 1 of gestation to obtain mammary glands for compositional analyses, immunohistochemistry, and analysis of mRNA abundance for AA transporters and markers of cell proliferation and differentiation. The HILYS gilts gained more body weight (P < 0.01) during the experimental period compared with CTL gilts, and had greater fetal weights (1.29 vs. 1.21 ± 0.03 kg, P < 0.05). There was no difference in circulating IGF-1, glucose, or albumin (P > 0.10) between HILYS and CTL gilts on day 110 of gestation, whereas concentrations of urea and free fatty acids were greater (P < 0.01), and those of Trp and Ala were lower (P < 0.05), in HILYS than CTL gilts. The provision of lysine at 40% above estimated requirements increased total mammary parenchymal mass by 44%, as well as total parenchymal fat, protein, DNA, and RNA (P < 0.01). The mRNA abundance of ACACA was greater (P < 0.05) in HILYS than CTL gilts, while only the AA transporter SLC6A14 tended (P < 0.10) to be greater. Results demonstrate that providing dietary Lys above current National Research Council recommendations in late gestation increases mammary development in gilts. Results also indicate that Lys may have been limiting for protein retention. These data suggest that the use of a two-phase feeding strategy during gestation, whereby dietary Lys is increased from day 90, could benefit potential sow milk yield in the subsequent lactation.

Postdoctoral scholars constitute a sizeable population within the academic workforce. Given the intended role of a postdoc position as a time of advanced training and professional development for a future academic career, particularly in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields, it is important to understand whether and how well the career-related needs of postdocs are being met. The purpose of this research was to understand STEM postdoctoral scholars' career trajectories, with particular attention to the influences on their career-related decision making, by applying the Life Experiences and Role Negotiations (LEARN) model to qualitative data from interviews with 19 STEM postdocs. Findings reveal the multiple influences on postdocs' career-related decisions and how these shape postdocs' career trajectories. Based on our findings, we offer three suggestions for how institutional and national policies and programs can best support the career development of postdocs.

Education abroad is a high-impact practice that can lead to transformational learning because it challenges students emotionally and intellectually. However, differences in program design may have differential impacts on students' learning. The purpose of this study was to understand the relationships between design features of education abroad programs--specifically, program duration and the extent of students' engagement in learning and with local communities while abroad--and participants' pre-test to post-test growth in global learning, measured via the nationally validated Global Perspective Inventory survey. Using structural equation models, we found program duration and frequency of engagement in certain learning and engagement abroad to have positive effects on participants' growth, although the relationships varied depending on the dimension of global perspective being measured. Nonetheless, our results provide further support for the need to intentionally design education abroad programs that facilitate deep learning and community interaction in order to ensure student learning.

College students' achievement of diversity-related learning outcomes is primarily facilitated by intercultural peer interactions. Close friendships across cultural differences are especially powerful, yet we know little about how or why these relationships develop and are sustained. The purpose of this study was to understand how college students develop and sustain interracial friendships, as one form of intercultural friendship, by developing a grounded theory of this process. Twenty-one undergraduate students who had a close friend of another race or ethnicity participated. Data were obtained via interviews, journals, and written questionnaires. The resulting theory of interpersonalizing cultural difference consists of four central subprocesses in which college students engage in developing and sustaining their interracial friendships: (1) cultivating trust and establishing a silent contract, (2) embracing similarity without forgetting difference, (3) exploring other cultures, and (4) bridging difference to connect. This research provides insight into how colleges and universities can support interracial friendships to more effectively facilitate students' achievement of diversity-related learning outcomes. Specific implications address the types of campus environments that facilitate interracial friendship development and the need for interventions to ensure that students from all cultural backgrounds have the support they need to positively and meaningfully engage with culturally different peers.

Peer review is an important part of the scientific process, but traditional peer review at journals is coming under increased scrutiny for its inefficiency and lack of transparency. As preprints become more widely used and accepted, they raise the possibility of rethinking the peer-review process. Preprints are enabling new forms of peer review that have the potential to be more thorough, inclusive, and collegial than traditional journal peer review, and to thus fundamentally shift the culture of peer review toward constructive collaboration. In this Consensus View, we make a call to action to stakeholders in the community to accelerate the growing momentum of preprint sharing and provide recommendations to empower researchers to provide open and constructive peer review for preprints.

Despite the economic importance of Piper nigrum (black pepper), a highly valued crop worldwide, development and utilization of genomic resources have remained limited, with diversity assessments often relying on only a few samples or DNA markers. Here we employed restriction-site associated DNA sequencing to analyze 175 P. nigrum accessions from eight main black pepper growing regions in Sri Lanka. The sequencing effort resulted in 1,976 million raw reads, averaging 11.3 million reads per accession, revealing 150,356 high-quality single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) distributed across 26 chromosomes. Population structure analysis revealed two subpopulations (K = 2): a dominant group consisting of 152 accessions sourced from both home gardens and large-scale cultivations, and a smaller group comprising 23 accessions exclusively from native collections in home gardens. This clustering was further supported by principal component analysis, with the first two principal components explaining 35.2 and 12.1% of the total variation. Genetic diversity analysis indicated substantial gene flow (Nm = 342.21) and a low fixation index (FST = 0.00073) between the two subpopulations, with no clear genetic differentiation among accessions from different agro-climatic regions. These findings demonstrate that most current black pepper genotypes grown in Sri Lanka share a common genetic background, emphasizing the necessity to broaden the genetic base to enhance resilience to biotic and abiotic stresses. This study represents the first attempt at analyzing black pepper genetic diversity using high-resolution SNP markers, laying the foundation for future genome-wide association studies for SNP-based gene discovery and breeding.
