The presented source edition discusses unknown letters of American translator and grant-holder of the Kościuszko Foundation in Poland in the 1930s, Elizabeth Munk Clark (1908--2001). They are concerned with her stay in Medyka and her cooperation with Michał Pawlikowski, translating his novel Change Your Bodies from Polish into English. In her letters to her parents, her fiancé Ernest Reiss and to Pawlikowski, Clark shares her observations from the summer of 1932, describing not only the Medyka residents and the work on translation, but also Cracow, Americans staying there as well as her impressions of daily life in Poland. It hardly ever happens that the same or similar things get described by one person in letters to three different recipients. That is why this correspondence, so far completely unknown, is worth introducing to a broader circle of readers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

RENAISSANCE ,POLISH literature ,TEXTUAL criticism - Abstract
This article aims to analyze the scientific activity of Józef Maksymilian Ossoliński (1754–1826) concerning his research on the literature and culture of the Polish Renaissance through the prism of the achievements of Pierre Bayle (1647–1706), one of the most important representatives of modern scientifi c, philosophical, and encyclopedic thought. The study is based on Ossoliński’s Wiadomości historyczno-krytyczne do dziejów literatury polskiej (Historical and Critical Notes on the History of Polish Literature) and Bayle’s Dictionnaire Historique et Critique (Historical and Critical Dictionary) – works that mark many years of their scholarly activity. The comparative method adopted in this paper makes it possible to indicate the shared features of their endeavours: the principles of editing sources (textual criticism), the form of presenting research results, or the title of the publication. The article concludes that Ossoliński clearly modelled his Wiadomości historyczno-krytyczne on Bayle’s work and sheds new light on the reception of Bayle in Poland. It also reinforces the position Ossoliński’s work holds in the Polish textual criticism canon. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BIBLICAL criticism ,CONGREGATIONAL singing (Sacred music) ,UNITARIANISM - Abstract
Within half a century, there were two Unitarian authors who created rhymed Hungarian translations of the Book of Psalms – Miklós Fazakas Bogáti at the end of the 16th century and János Thordai in 1627. There are still unanswered questions regarding these translations: why did Bogáti's translation not spread among Unitarian congregations? Was Thordai acquainted with Bogáti's translation? This paper explores the circle of possible answers to these questions from various perspectives. It also examines Bogáti's biography and the subsequent legacy of his Psalterium, taking into account the context of Church history and the history of publishing Unitarian songbooks. In addition, the poetics of the two translations are analysed. Based on these it transpires that there were several circumstances that made the spreading of the Psalterium difficult. However, Thordai's work should not be viewed solely as depending on Bogáti's translation, since it is not certain that Thordai was trying to fill a gap with his translation. The Transylvanian Unitarians did not necessarily intend to publish a complete Unitarian translation of the Book of Psalms in their songbooks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HISTORY of science ,SCIENCE education ,HISTORY of education ,ACTIVE learning ,ROMANIES - Abstract
The establishment of the Department of the History of Science and Education at the Jagiellonian University in 1956 took 11 years of efforts and attempts by the university authorities and Krakow historians of culture, education and science to develop these directions of research at the oldest Polish research center. The pre-WW2 chair was vacant because Professor Stanisław Kot took the position of the ambassador in Rome and after the communists had gained full power in Poland, he could not return to the country. The chairs of Barycz and Hulewicz began operating in 1946, but in 1947 the communist authorities decided to eliminate them. The implementation of these decisions, however, was not carried out immediately as it was delayed in the case of Barycz's chair until 1949, and in the case of Hulewicz's until 1953. It was not until 1956 that the thaw allowed the authorities of the Jagiellonian University to restore the closed departments as a single one under the name of the Department of the History of Science and Education, consisting of two seminars. The author discusses the organizational structure, composition, research results, and teaching activities of the Department's employees. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the article: is to show the relationship between social activity and the values of civil society. An additional assumption is to indicate the essence of the issue in an interdisciplinary approach, to draw attention to its multidimensionality, connection and social significance, leaving room for own research. Design/methodology/approach: The research method used in this article is the analysis of scientific papers, supplemented by the author's observations and experience. The research procedure included a review of Polish and foreign literature, analysis of legal acts, method of analysis and synthesis, case study and deductive reasoning. The article presents the results of research on the awareness, activity and values of civil society. Conclusions: A high level of influence of citizens' awareness in the process of building a civic society was demonstrated. Examples of activities and values of the changes taking place in civilization, spontaneity and voluntariness, understood as the principle of subsidiarity setting limits for citizens and authorities. Active citizens is an active society, a community of citizens that consciously and responsibly manages its interests. The conducted analysis shows that a conscious citizen is a conscious choice and a conscious way of their implementation. Intellectually healthy people are the sum of a healthy society, the sick are the sum of destruction and narcissism. Citizenship is inscribed in the life of every human being, although few people are aware of it. Research limitations/implications: Limitations of the obtained results may result from a limited text sample. Originality/value: The presented research and conclusions provide practical tips not only to people of science, but above all to average citizens, mainly those who are not aware that civilization change does not arise overnight, it is always preceded by a number of smaller changes hidden under the surface many areas. Thanks to the activity of the society, it is easier to develop a consensus on matters of key importance to society. It is easier to understand another person, learn tolerance, and recognize the differences of interests as natural and desirable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HISTORY of astronomy ,HISTORY of science ,ASTRONOMERS ,SIXTEENTH century - Abstract
In the present paper, I present and discuss some new information about the life of Paul Wittich from Wrocław, Poland (formerly Breslau, Germany), an elusive mathematician and astronomer of the late 16th century. Wittich seems to have played a significant role in the emergence of two important, though short‐lived, developments of late 16th‐century science: the so‐called prosthaphaeresis calculating method, and the geoheliocentric model of the universe usually attributed to Tycho Brahe. His role in both achievements, however, has not been sufficiently explained so far, and it is my belief that one of the main obstacles to that endeavor has been our scarce knowledge about the details of Wittich's life. Thus, I attempt to reconstruct his life with aim of being able to evaluate, eventually, his involvement in the development of mathematics and astronomy towards the end of the 16th century, primarily with the use of whatever scant sources can be found concerning Wittich. The source that I present here—a notebook of Bartholomäus Scultetus, an astronomer from Görlitz—is known and has already been used, but only to a limited extent by the community of historians of science, or by those of astronomy and mathematics. By presenting the information about Wittich from Scultetus's notebook, I aim to bring this source to the attention of those communities, clarify some hitherto unclear details from Wittich's life, and set out new paths for further investigation into his biography. The first part of the paper is to introduce the main motif of Bernardino Ochino's Trajedyja o Mszej (Tragedy on Mass) published in Polish translation in 1560. The work tells the story of a trial of the personified Mass indicted by figures that can be identified with the Reformation and the individuals engaged in it. The Author discusses the structure of this literary dialogue and describes briefly the characters involved in the plot with their polemical background (these include in particular personifications of the Mass, the Lord's Supper, and the Roman Church, as well as figures of the Pope, Satan, Holy Spirit, and a metonymic protagonist named the Lover of God's Glory). The second part presents the context of literary tradition, where Mass was personified for controversial purposes, mainly by authors connected with the Reformation. The motif of a personified Mass was probably introduced in Swiss pamphlets of the 1520s (Krankheit und Testament der Messe by Niklaus Manuel, Querela Missae by Johannes Atrocianus). The concept of accusing Mass of dishonesty and performing her trial was recognised as an innovation of English Protestant writings of the late 1540s (esp. William Punt's and William Turner's dialogues). The aforementioned texts are juxtaposed with Ochino's dialogue to show the probable origins of the concept used in his text, as well as to specify additional motifs combined by him (and consequently the Polish translator). The similarities between Ochino's work and the texts chosen, as well as Ochino's connections with the places of publication of these texts, allow us to see them as part of a small yet consistent subtype of Protestant polemical writings, which Ochino chose to use and modify for controversial purposes. AURORAS ,UNITARIANISM - Abstract
The first scientific treatise on aurora borealis was published by Marcello Squarcialupi, an Italian medical doctor working in the court of the Hungarian Prince of Transylvania. His book, De coelo ardore, described the aurora of 10 September 1580 in great detail, providing exact data from his personal observations on the time, direction, shape, colour, and variability. He invoked a rational explanation, bringing up only natural causes, and confronted these with the ruling Aristotelian view. The original Latin text describing the aurora is provided, with an English translation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
In summer 1586 the king Stefan Batory decided to summon the parliament for 2nd February 1587. In the parliamentary legation he scolded the nobles for not taking tax decisions at the previous parliament, but concentrated on foreign policy in reference to the summoned one. He warned of the Tartar, Turkish and Muscovite threats. It was the last, which he considered the gravest and asked the nobles to raise taxes for a war against the tsar. He also asked the dietines to give their representatives (deputies) a free hand in decisions. At the Great Poland dietine in Środa, a limited agreement was granted for a future war against Moscow. The elected deputies were mostly royalists and the king could count on their votes. Nevertheless the dietine in Środa produced a number of additional postulates to be discussed at the convention. These were of lesser importance, but could effectively prevent the house from discussing and passing royal military plans. Thus a question is born, whether the monarch could accumulate enough backing among deputies to pass his ideas at the February meeting. Unfortunately we are not able to answer this question, as the parliament never convened due to monarch's death on 12 December 1586. We have only limited information about nobles' stand from two dietines: from Środa and Liw. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The subject of this article is the list of payments for the courtiers of Stefan Batory, made after the death of the ruler. It can be assumed that most of the people mentioned in this document stayed with the king in Grodno, so it is possible to use it to explore the structure of the monarch's court in the last moments of his life. Among the courtiers there were several people who began their career during the reign of Stefan Batory, and then played a significant role at the beginning of the rule of Sigismund III. By using this document and the regulations of the court of the first Vases, it can be analyzed who and under what circumstances moved from the Stefan Batory surroundings to the court of Sigismund III. The issue is all the more interesting as we do not exactly know how, in the reality of elective monarchy, the newly elected king treated the courtiers of his predecessor. What can also be traced is the amount of remuneration received by people from Stefan Batory's surroundings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Erasmus of Rotterdam is not typically associated with the discipline of philosophy. Yet, he would himself employ the category of philosophia Christi in the sense of authentic Christianity which had not been contaminated by the abstractness and pedanticism of paganized mediaeval scholasticism. Does this reveal a contrarian attitude to philosophy in general or rather a special understanding of what a'true'philosophy as a way of life should be? This study attempts to answer this question by assembling and closely studying from Erasmus'extensive oeuvre his scant and occasional remarks on the concept of philosophy.

- Abstract
The purpose of this unique handbook is to examine the transformation of the philosophy of mathematics from its origins in the history of mathematical practice to the present. It aims to synthesize what is known and what has unfolded so far, as well as to explore directions in which the study of the philosophy of mathematics, as evident in increasingly diverse mathematical practices, is headed. Each section offers insights into the origins, debates, methodologies, and newer perspectives that characterize the discipline today. Contributions are written by scholars from mathematics, history, and philosophy – as well as other disciplines that have contributed to the richness of perspectives abundant in the study of philosophy today – who describe various mathematical practices throughout different time periods and contrast them with the development of philosophy. The richness of mathematics and the philosophy encompassing it is splendidly exhibited over the wide range of time these volumes cover---from deep platonic and neoplatonic influences to the most current experimental approaches. Enriched, as well, with vivid biographies and brilliant personal essays written by (and about) people who play an important role in our tradition, this extraordinary collection of essays is fittingly dedicated to the memory of Chandler Davis, Reuben Hersh, and Yuri Manin. ---Barry Mazur, Gerhard Gade University Professor, Harvard University This encyclopedic Handbook will be a treat for all those interested in the history and philosophy of mathematics. Whether one is interested in individuals (from Pythagoras through Newton and Leibniz to Grothendieck), fields (geometry, algebra, number theory, logic, probability, analysis), viewpoints (from Platonism to Intuitionism), or methods (proof, experiment, computer assistance), the reader will find a multitude of chapters that inform and fascinate. ---John Stillwell, Emeritus Professor of Mathematics, University of San Francisco; Recipient of the 2005 Chauvenet Prize Dedicating a volume to the memory of three mathematicians – Chandler Davis, Reuben Hersh, and Yuri Manin –, who went out of their way to show to a broader audience that mathematics is more than what they might think, is an excellent initiative. - Abstract

- Abstract
A Companion to Late Medieval and Early Modern Siena presents chapters by prominent scholars on the powerful commune that birthed a pope, sheltered saints, built banking institutions that have thrived for nearly 1000 years, and nurtured vibrant communities of artists and intellectuals. This multi-disciplinary book, edited by Santa Casciani and Heather Richardson Hayton, redresses scholarly imbalances of the past by introducing early period Siena to a wider audience. Focusing mostly on the 12th to 16th centuries, each chapter explores how the Sienese crafted a distinctive civic identity that remains intact still. Modern readers will find Siena's responses to plague, political factionalism, and aggression from powerful neighbours particularly relevant. Contributors are: Mario Ascheri, Saverio Luigi Battente, Elena Brizio, Santa Casciani, Konrad Eisenbichler, Bradley Franco, Fabrizio Nevola, Anna Peterson, Colleen Reardon, Sheri Shaneyfelt, Jane Tylus, Andrea Beth Wenz, Demetrio Yocum.

- Abstract

- Abstract
This book presents the heritage of the Lvov-Warsaw School from both the historical and the philosophical perspective. The historical view focuses on the beginnings and the dramatic end of the School brought about by the outbreak of World War II. The philosophical view, on the other hand, encompasses a broad spectrum of issues, including logical, epistemological, axiological, and psychological problems, revealing the interdisciplinary nature of studies carried out by Kazimierz Twardowski and his students. With thirteen diverse and original essays this volume is split into three parts: History, Culture and Axiology; Psychology; and Logic and Methodology. Exploring not only the history of philosophy represented by the Lvov-Warsaw school, the book also reflects on the condition of contemporary philosophy from the perspective of concepts developed by its representatives. Furthermore, the studies presented in this book delve into problems of contemporary science and its distinctiveinterdisciplinary character. This volume is, therefore, not only a collection of analyses of the Lvov-Warsaw School philosophy, but also an investigation into the interdisciplinarity of science and philosophy itself.

- Abstract
W książce podjęto rozważania z zakresu antropologii ekonomicznej i antropologii codzienności. W monografii omówiła codzienne praktyki dotyczące prowadzenia gospodarstw domowych, rodzaju najczęściej kupowanych towarów i usług, nawyków żywieniowych i konsumpcyjnych, sposobów zamieszkiwania, zasad dbałości o ciało i higienę, form spędzania czasu wolnego, a także światopoglądu, religijności, stosunku do polskiej tradycji kulturowej.

- Abstract
Publikacja dotyczy dziejów kamienicy przy ul. Uniwersyteckiej 3 w Łodzi, pierwotnie przeznaczonej na dom nauczycieli Szkoły Zgromadzenia Kupców miasta Łodzi (1898-1939). Od 1945 roku do dziś to budynek uniwersytecki. Mieściły się w nim mieszkania profesorów – organizatorów Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego (m.in. prof.

- Abstract
The 12th Origeniana conference took place at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, in June 2017. The theme of the conference was Origen's Legacy in the Holy Land - A Tale of Three Cities: Jerusalem, Caesarea and Bethlehem. The present volume contains a large selection from the papers that were given at the conference. Many of the papers discuss various aspects and new perspectives of Origen's career and legacy in the Holy Land in the broad sense. As was the case also in previous conferences, there was an opportunity to deliver papers on other aspects of current Origen research. The volume contains five sections: Jerusalem and the Holy Land: Historical and Mystical Geography; The School of Caesarea and Eusebius; Origen's Latin Legacy: Rufinus and Jerome; Tradition, Innovation, and Heritage: Origen's Exegesis and Theology; and The Origenist Legacy: From Evagrius to Balthasar.

- Abstract

- Abstract
This book focuses on Muslim–Christian cultural relations across a number of centuries. As for the methodology, the book represents an intersection of religious studies, linguistics and translations studies. The bases of research are a Tatar tefsir and 19th- and 20th-century printed translations of the Qur'an into Polish. In the period of the Reformation, the Tatar adherents of Sunni Islam conducted the dialogue with Christianity. They translated the Qur'an into Polish already in the second half of the 16th century. They used the Arabic alphabet to record the translation and conferred the form of a tefsir to it. Who were the Tatar translators? Did they break the ban on the translation of the Holy Book of Islam? What sources did they use? How did they translate the Muslim religious terminology? Why is their translation of the Qur'an not familiar to researchers? These are only a few questions which are explored in this work.

- Abstract
Over the course of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, as more and more vernacular commentaries on the Decalogue were produced throughout Europe, the moral system of the Ten Commandments gradually became more prominent. The Ten Commandments proved to be a topic from which numerous proponents of pastoral and lay catechesis drew inspiration. God's commands were discussed and illustrated in sermons and confessor's manuals, and they spawned new theological and pastoral treatises both Catholic and Reformed. But the Decalogue also served several authors, including Dante, Petrarch, and Christine de Pizan. Unlike the Seven Deadly Sins, the Ten Commandments supported a more positive image of mankind, one that embraced the human potential for introspection and the conscious choice to follow God's Law.

- Abstract
This book reconstructs the history of skepticism ranging from ancient to contemporary times, from Pyrrho to Kripke. The main skeptical stances and the historical reconstruction of the concept of skepticism are connected with an analysis of their recurrent inconsistency. The author reveals that this inconsistency is not a logical contradiction but a pragmatic one. She shows that it is a contradiction between the content of the skeptical position and the implicit presumption of the act of its assertion. The thesis of global skepticism cannot be accepted as true without falling into the pragmatic inconsistency. The author explains, how skepticism was important for exposing the limits of human knowledge and inspired its development.

- Abstract

- Inquisition--Economic aspects--Italy
- Abstract
Established in 1542, the Roman Inquisition operated through a network of almost fifty tribunals to combat heretical and heterodox threats within the papal territories. Whilst its theological, institutional and political aspects have been well-studied, until now no sustained work has been undertaken to understand the financial basis upon which it operated. Yet – as The Business of the Roman Inquisition in the Early Modern Era shows – the fiscal autonomy enjoyed by each tribunal was a major factor in determining how the Inquisition operated. For, as the flow of cash from Rome declined, each tribunal was forced to rely upon its own assets and resources to fund its work, resulting in a situation whereby tribunals increasingly came to resemble businesses. As each tribunal was permitted to keep a substantial proportion of the fines and confiscations it levied, questions quickly arose regarding the economic considerations that may have motivated the Inquisition's actions. Dr Maifreda argues that the Inquisition, with the need to generate sufficient revenue to continue working, had a clear incentive to target wealthy groups within society who could afford to yield up substantial revenues. Furthermore, as secular authorities also began to rely upon a levy on these revenues, the financial considerations of decisions regarding heresy prosecutions become even greater. Based upon a wealth of hitherto neglected primary sources from the Vatican and local Italian archives, Dr Maifreda reveals the underlying financial structures that played a vital part in the operations of the Roman Inquisition. By exploring the system of incentives and pressures that guided the actions of inquisitors in their procedural processes and choice of victims, a much clearer understanding of the Roman Inquisition emerges. This book is an English translation of I denari dell'inquisitore. Affari e giustizia di fede nell'Italia moderna (Turin: Einaudi, 2014).

- Abstract
The different theoretical notions and practices of the relations between the state and religious communities in early modern Europe constitute one of the most interesting problems in historiography. Moving away from a simple «toleration» versus «non-toleration» dichotomy, the author sets out to analyse the inter-confessional relations in selected European territories in a «longue duree» perspective, between Reformation and Enlightenment. Outlining the relations between the state and the different Churches (confessions) in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Holy Roman Empire of Germany, and the Northern Netherlands serves to highlight the specificity of Northern Netherlands serves to highlight the specificity of «free» (non-absolutist) composite states, where the particularly complex process of defining the raison d'etat determined the level of religious toleration that was politically feasible and socially acceptable.

- Abstract
Christoph Rothmann wrote a treatise on the comet of 1585 shortly after it disappeared. Though it was not printed until 1619, Rothman sent a copy of his treatise in 1586 to Tycho Brahe, decisively influencing the latter's rejection of solid celestial spheres two years later. In his treatise, Rothmann joined the elimination of the solid celestial spheres to his concept of air as the substance filling the cosmos. He based his argument on the absence of refraction and the celestial location of the comet. The treatise also contained clear statements reflecting Rothmann's adoption of Copernicanism. This first critical edition of the treatise is accompanied by an English translation and a thorough commentary. Some appendices with archival documents illustrate the genesis of Rothmann's treatise.

- Abstract

- Abstract
The book illustrates the fact that in reforming theology sixteenth century theologians also reformed practice or the imperatives of Christian living. Experts in reformation studies identify and elucidate areas of sixteenth century reforming activity in Martin Luther, John Calvin and other leading reformers to demonstrate the thoroughgoing nature of the reformation agenda. The interpretation of Scripture, the centrality of Jesus Christ, the Jewish question, freedom and pastoral insight form the contents of an important section on Luther. The use of feminine imagery for God, the Augsburg Confession, deification, education, and the gospel are treated in relation to Calvin. The final section deals with Oecolampadius, the Son of Man texts in Matthew, justification, texts on difficult deaths and a Trinitarian exegesis of Scripture. By careful reading of both the historical situation and the primary texts this volume adds significantly to our understanding of the period.

- Abstract
- Abstract
