Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by a dysfunction of the immune system. Mesenchymal stromal cell (MSCs) derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) are nanometer-sized particles carrying a diverse range of bioactive molecules, such as proteins, miRNAs, and lipids. Despite the methodological disparities, recent works on MSC-EVs have highlighted their broad immunosuppressive effect, thus driving forwards the potential of MSC-EVs in the treatment of chronic diseases. Nonetheless, their mechanism of action is still unclear, and better understanding is needed for clinical application. Therefore, we describe in this review the diverse range of bioactive molecules mediating their immunomodulatory effect, the techniques and possibilities for enhancing their immune activity, and finally the potential application to SLE., Competing Interests: CW and TF are employed by EVerZom. In the present study, the chemical composition and antioxidant potential of an essential oil of ginger rhizomes from Ecuador was elucidated. The analysis of the essential oil by GC/FID/MS resulted in identification of 71 compounds, of which the main are citral (geranial 10.5% and neral 9.1%), α-zingiberene (17.4%), camphene (7.8%), α-farnesene (6.8%) and β-sesquiphellandrene (6.7%). The in vitro antioxidant activity of the essential oil expressed by IC50 in descending order is: hydroxyl radical (OH*) scavenging (0.0065 μg/mL) > chelating capacity (0.822 μg/mL) > 2,2-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid radical cation (ABTS*+) scavenging (3.94 μg/mL) > xanthine oxidase inhibition (138.0 μg/mL) > oxygen radical (O2*) scavenging (404.0 μg/mL) > 2,2- diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH*) scavenging (675 μg/mL). Lipid peroxidation inhibition of the essential oil was less efficient than butylhydroxytoluol (BHT) in both stages, i.e. hydroperoxide and malondialdehyde formation. In vivo studies in Saccharomyces cerevisiae demonstrated a significant dose-dependent increase in antioxidant marker enzymes, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx), blocking the oxidation processes in yeast cells. Moreover, ginger essential oil in concentrations of 1.6 mg/mL increases the viability of cells to oxidative stress induced by H2O2.

The purpose of this study was to prepare Pickering emulsions stabilized by waste jujube kernel cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) using composite essential oils (EOs) (i.e., cinnamon essential oil [CIN] combined with clove essential oil [CL]). The Pickering emulsions were blended with chitosan (CS) to generate a composite film (CS/CNC/EOs Pickering emulsions). We evaluated the mechanical properties, barrier properties, and microstructures of CS/CNC/EOs bio-based packaging films containing different concentrations of EOs. In addition, the fresh-keeping effects of the composite membranes on beef sausages were evaluated over a 12-day storage period. Notably, the EOs exhibited good compatibility with CS. With the increase in the EOs concentration, the droplet size increased, the composite films became thicker, the elongation at break decreased, the tensile strength increased, and the water vapor permeability decreased. When the composite films were used for preserving beef sausages, the antioxidant and antibacterial activity of the membranes improved as the concentration of EOs increased, effectively prolonging the shelf life of the sausages. Composite membranes with an EOs concentration of 2% exerted the best fresh-keeping effects. Overall, owing to their antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, the bio-based composite films prepared using CS/CNC/EOs Pickering emulsions demonstrated immense potential for application in the packaging of meat products. This study aims to investigate selected medicinal plants' anti-oxidative and antihyperglycemic activities to develop an effective remedy for lowering blood glucose levels and/or reducing diabetes complications. Thai medicinal plants, reported to have blood sugar-lowering effects, were selected for the study: Coccinia grandis, Gymnema inodorum, Gynostemma pentaphyllum, Hibiscus sabdariffa, Momordica charantia, Morus alba, and Zingiber officinale. Each species was extracted by Soxhlet's extraction using ethanol as solvent. The ethanolic crude extract of each species was then evaluated for its phytochemicals, anti-oxidant, and antihyperglycemic activities. The results showed that the extract of Z. officinale gave the highest values of total phenolic and total flavonoid content (167.95 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g and 81.70 mg CE/g, respectively). Anti-oxidant activity was determined using DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity. Among the ethanolic extracts, Z. officinale exhibited the highest anti-oxidant activity with IC50 values of 19.16 and 8.53 µg/mL, respectively. The antihyperglycemic activity was assessed using α-glucosidase inhibitory and glucose consumption activities. M. alba and G. pentaphyllum demonstrated the highest α-glucosidase inhibitory activity among the ethanolic extracts, with IC50 values of 134.40 and 329.97 µg/mL, respectively. Z. officinale and H. sabdariffa showed the highest percentage of glucose consumption activity in induced insulin-resistant HepG2 cells at a concentration of 50 µg/mL with 145.16 and 107.03%, respectively. The results from α-glucosidase inhibitory and glucose consumption activities were developed as an effective antihyperglycemic remedy. Among the remedies tested, the R1 remedy exhibited the highest potential for reducing blood glucose levels, with an IC50 value of 122.10 µg/mL. The increasing presence of Anisakis spp. in fish is having significant implications for public health due to a rise in cases of anisakiasis. Given this situation, there is a critical need to develop new strategies to fight this parasite. Satureja montana L., commonly known as savory, is a plant recognized in folk medicine for its therapeutic activity, such as being antispasmodic and digestive, among other properties. The aim of this study was to assess the nematicide activity against A. simplex larvae of the essential oil from two varieties of S. montana (subsp. montana (SMM) and variegata (SMV)). The essential oils were obtained via hydro-distillation of the flowering aerial parts. In vitro assays demonstrated the complete inactivation of anisakis larvae after 24 h when exposed to both essential oils, along with a significant reduction in their penetration capacity. Moreover, both essential oils showed an inhibitory effect on acetylcholinesterase (AChE). No differences between the subspecies were observed in any of the assays. Hence, the nematicidal activity of essential oils could be attributed to their capacity to inhibit AChE. A crude hexane extract of seed kernel was processed into fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) using methanolic-sulfuric acid. Herbal mixtures (seed extracts of A. squamosa and essential oils of Cymbopogon nardus (citronella) and Pelargonium graveolens (geranium)) were evaluated against root knot nematode (Meloidogyne spp). The mortality of J2s of M. incognita in hexane and methanol extracts (AHE+AME) of A. squamosa with geranium oil (GO) ranged from 50.75-89.75% to 71.50-99.00% at 31.25 to 1000 μgmL-1 in 24 to 96 hours. The number of galls after CO+AHE+AME treatment was 4.0 ± 0.0 and 5.67 ± 0.58 galls/seedling and were recorded at 1000 and 500 μgmL-1 treatments on 30 days after inoculation, compared to carbofuran (3.0 ± 0.0 and 4.3 ± 0.6 galls/seedling) at 1000 and 500 μgmL-1 and velum prime (3.6 ± 0.6 and 4.6 ± 0.6 galls/seedling) at 1000 and 500 μgmL-1. The maximum shoot length of brinjal seedlings was recorded in CO+AHE+AME treatment compared to carbofuran (47.3 ± 0.6cm) and velum prime (48.7 ± 0.6 cm) at 1000 μg mL-1 in soil drenching application. Methanol and hexane extracts (AHE+AME) obtained from Annona squamosa seeds were investigated for their nematicidal properties. The purpose of the current study was to assess the effect of dietary supplements of either aqueous (AE) or ethanolic (EE) (Juniperus communis) leaf extracts on growth performance, intestinal health, hemato-biochemical indices, antioxidant, inflammation cytokine responses, and resistances against infection in Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. Fish groups were controlled with no extract (J1) and fed diets (J2, J3, J4, and J5) containing 1.0 and 2.0 g/kg aqueous and ethanolic extract for 60 days. Fish were given an intraperitoneal injection (IP) of Aeromonas hydrophila for 10 days after the feeding trial; then, the fish mortality was recorded. Growth, feed efficiency, and activity of endogenous enzymes (lipase, trypsin, chymotrypsin, and amylase) were significantly improved in all dietary J. communis groups, especially in J5, compared to other groups. Also, J5 showed the highest absorption area, muscularis, goblet cells, villi width, and fewer gut bacterial counts than the other groups. In addition, the J4 and J5 groups of tilapia fish exhibited a significant increase in the levels of total protein, serum albumin, globulin, hemoglobin, white blood cells, and hematocrit (P < 0.05), as well as a significant decrease in the levels of serum alanine, aspartate aminotransferases, glucose, and cholesterol compared to the J1 groups. Moreover, the J4 and J5 fish showed a significant decline in the levels of MDA with improvements in antioxidant (SOD, CAT, and GPX) and immunological (lysozyme, immunoglobulin M, and complement C3) indices compared to the J1 group. Fish in J4 and J5 exhibited downregulated levels of il-8, il-10, il-1β, tnf-α, ifn-γ, and hsp70 genes compared to other groups. In contrast, hepatic catalase (cat), superoxide dismutase (sod), and interleukin (il-10) gene expressions were upregulated. The lowest fish mortality after the bacterial challenge was recorded in the J5 group. These findings suggest that 2.0 g/kg feed ethanolic extract of J. communis-fed Tilapia fish fingerlings improved their growth and intestinal health, boosted their immune systems and antioxidant responses, and increased their resistance to A. hydrophila. Background/Objectives: 6-Shogaol is a comparatively innovative anti-Parkinson's remedy with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory characteristics. This investigation intended to determine the role of 6-shogaol in the Parkinson's disease (PD) paradigm in rotenone-induced rats. Methods: Thirty male Wistar rats (10–12 weeks old; 180 ± 20 g) were divided into five groups. Animals with rotenone-induced experimental PD were subsequently treated with 6-shogaol-10 at 20 mg/kg for 28 days. After the experimental duration, behavioural investigations were performed, i.e., open field test, forced swim test, rotarod test, and catalepsy test. Biochemical assessments like AChE, GSH, CAT, SOD, MDA, nitrite, ceruloplasmin, proinflammatory markers such as IL-1β, NF-κB, TNF-α, and catecholamines markers (DA, GABA, and MAO-B) were determined. The docking procedure was conducted using the AutoDock Vina docking protocol. Furthermore, histopathology was performed. Results: Rotenone significantly increased the level of MAO-B, oxidative, nitrative, and pro-inflammatory markers. However, there was a decline in ceruloplasmin, dopamine, and endogenous antioxidants. Treatment with 6-shogaol (10 and 20 mg/kg) considerably sustained the elevation of oxidative stress and inflammatory indicators and decreased AChE activity and dopamine levels. In the histology of the brain, 6-shogaol improved the neuronal structure and reduced the degeneration of neurons. Based on the binding energy values, compound 6-shogaol demonstrates a favourable binding affinity to AChE, MAO-B, DA, and GABA with respective binding energies of −8.214, −8.133, −7.396 and −6.189 kcal/mol. Conclusions: In this study, 6-shogaol exhibited neuroprotective properties against PD, which could be employed as a prospective medication for PD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background/Objectives: The emergence of antimicrobial resistance has urged researchers to explore new antimicrobial agents, such as essential oils (EOs). The aim of this study was to examine chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of the EOs from the needles and green cones of four Pinus species (Pinus mugo Turra., P. nigra J.F., P. syilvestris L., and P. halepensis Miller) from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Methods: Chemical profiles of EOs were assessed by gas chromatography, while microdilution method was used to test their antimicrobial activity. A synergistic action of EOs and gentamicin was investigated by the checkerboard assay. Results: The chemical composition of the tested EOs showed a high percentage of α-pinene, (E)-caryophyllene, limonene, germacrene D, myrcene, and δ-3-carene. EO from green cones of P. sylvestris showed high efficiency against S. aureus and E. faecalis. The MIC of P. nigra cones' EO was 100 μg/mL against E. coli. The EO of P. halepensis green cones demonstrated the strongest activity against E. faecalis. EOs of P. halepensis needles and green cones exhibited the highest activity against C. albicans. Further, synergistic interaction was detected in combination of the selected EOs/gentamicin toward S. aureus and K. pneumoniae. Conclusions: Among the tested EOs, oils of P. sylvestris cones and P. halepensis cones and needles showed the greatest antimicrobial activity. The same EOs and EO from P. nigra cones displayed synergistic potential in combination with gentamicin, supporting their utilization as antimicrobial agents alone or in combination with antibiotics, which is in line with their ethnopharmacological usage and circular bioeconomy principles. The essential oil of juniper berries (Juniperus communis L., Cupressaceae) is traditionally used for medicinal and flavoring purposes. As elucidated by gas chromatography/flame ionization detector (GC/FID) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS methods), the juniper berry oil from Bulgaria is largely comprised of monoterpene hydrocarbons such as α-pinene (51.4%), myrcene (8.3%), sabinene (5.8%), limonene (5.1%) and β-pinene (5.0%). The antioxidant capacity of the essential oil was evaluated in vitro by 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging, 2,2-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6 sulfonic acid (ABTS) radical cation scavenging, hydroxyl radical (ОН(•)) scavenging and chelating capacity, superoxide radical ((•)O₂(-)) scavenging and xanthine oxidase inhibitory effects, hydrogen peroxide scavenging. The antioxidant activity of the oil attributable to electron transfer made juniper berry essential oil a strong antioxidant, whereas the antioxidant activity attributable to hydrogen atom transfer was lower. Lipid peroxidation inhibition by the essential oil in both stages, i.e., hydroperoxide formation and malondialdehyde formation, was less efficient than the inhibition by butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). In vivo studies confirmed these effects of the oil which created the possibility of blocking the oxidation processes in yeast cells by increasing activity of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx).

The chemical composition of the essential oil from peppermint (Mentha x piperita L.) was analyzed by GC/FID and GC-MS. The main constituents were menthol (40.7%) and menthone (23.4%). Further components were (+/-)-menthyl acetate, 1,8-cineole, limonene, beta-pinene and beta-caryophyllene. Peppermint oil possessed antiradical activity with respect to DPPH (diphenyl picryl hydrazyl) and hydroxyl (OH*) radicals, exercising stronger antioxidant impact on the OH* radical. The concentrations required for 50% inhibition of the respective radical (IC50) were 860 microg/mL for DPPH and 0.26 microg/mL for OH*. Peppermint essential oil demonstrated antioxidant activity in a model linoleic acid emulsion system in terms of inhibiting conjugated dienes formation by 52.4% and linoleic acid secondary oxidized products generation by 76.9% (at 0.1% concentration).

Dynamic analysis of arterial blood pressure in relation to the Earth's magnetic field perturbations was performed in 77 practically healthy volunteers (staff of Bulgarian Academy of Sciences). Almost half of them proved magneto-sensitive, i.e. experienced AP elevation with increased geomagnetic activity. The probability of development of magnetic sensitivity was independent of age and gender but increased in volunteers having even mild cardiovascular pathology. These subjects complained of worsened health condition upon a rise in geomagnetic activity. However, some volunteers reported deteriorated well-being without AD elevation. It means that AD measurement may be insufficient for reliable monitoring magnetic sensitivity.

The biodegradation process of high catechol concentrations by Aspergillus awamori was investigated. The values of the kinetic constants for a model of specific growth rate at different initial conditions were determined. At 1.0 g/L catechol concentration, the biodegradation process proceeded in the conditions of substrate limitation. At higher catechol concentrations (2.0 and 3.0 g/L) a presence of substrate inhibition was established. The dynamics of the specific catechol degradation rate was studied and the values of catechol and biomass concentrations, maximizing the specific catechol degradation rate, were estimated analytically. The specified ratio catechol/biomass could serve as a starting base for determination of the initial conditions for a batch process, for specifying the moment of feeding for a fed-batch process, and for monitoring and control of a continuous process by the aim of time-optimal control.

The growth and the enzymatic production of two microbial fungal associations were studied: Aspergillus niger and Fusarium moniliforme and Trametes versicolor and Aspergillus niger. The synergistic interrelations between the species of the first mixed culture increased the biosynthesis of alpha-amylase and pectinase. T. versicolor and A. niger proved to be compatible partners in the overproduction of the enzyme laccase, whose synthesis surpassed 8.4 times the enzymatic level in the monoculture, with both of the mixed microbial populations cocultivation facilitating the amplified synthesis of enzymes rather than their growth acceleration. A further proof of the presence of synergism established by the cultures was the enzyme volumetric productivities in both of the mixed microbial cultures, which increased parallel to the rise in the combined biomass synthesis. The competent selection of compatible partners can adjust the desired enzymatic levels and compositions in mixed fungal systems aimed at a number of specified designations. Thus, a very high level of laccase production (97,600 IU/g dry weight) was achieved. The chosen fungal strains produce a variety of different enzymes, but first microbial association produces mainly amylase and pectinase, necessary for their growth, and second association produces mainly laccase and pectinase.

Lavender (L) and Rosa damascena (RD) industrial solid by-products were used as biodegradable adsorbents for the removal of the azo dye Acid Orange 7 from aqueous solutions. The equilibrium for the adsorption (1 g of adsorbent, 20 mL aqueous solution of dye, pH 7.05) occurred at the 60 min and at 100 mg/L initial concentration of azo dye. The adsorbed amount of Acid Orange 7 was 1.63 mg/g (81.50% removal efficiency) for L and 1.74 mg/g (87% removal efficiency) for RD at 293 K. The effectiveness of the adsorption increased decreasing the pH medium: for L at pH 1.5, the removal was 1.975 ± 0.08 mg/g (98.75%), and for RD at pH 3.5, it was 1.975 ± 0.08 (98.75%). The removal behavior for Acid Orange 7 fitted the Freundlich model and suggested a diffusion process related to physical adsorption. For the three investigated temperatures (293 K, 303 K, and 313 K) negative values for Gibb's free energy ΔG0 were observed revealing the spontaneous character of the adsorption processes. The observed decrease of ΔG0 (ranging from − 18 to − 21 kJ/mol) implies a physical nature of the adsorption. The post-adsorption L and RD residues were subjected to solid-state cultivation using the fungus Ganoderma resinaceum GA1M yielding mycelium-based biocomposites. The investigations revealed that the biocomposites were free from Acid Orange 7. The approaches presented here demonstrate that L and RD industrial by-products can be successfully applied for the adsorption of Acid Orange 7 while producing harmless mycelium-based biocomposites through solid-state fermentation using G. resinaceum GA1M. The use of medicinal herbs is highly developed in Haiti. However, there is a significant lack of knowledge in the literature on medicinal plants and their uses. The objective of this study was to determine the knowledge and practices of Haitian families for the prevention/treatment of COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory diseases, as well as the mode of preparation and administration of the plants. Individuals were interviewed using the TRAMIL questionnaire as the information holder. The data obtained were analyzed by calculating 5 indices (relative frequency of citation, use value, the family use value, informant consensus factor, and fidelity level). The study surveyed 120 Haitians and collected 75 plants from 43 botanical families. The botanical family most used for all these preventions and remedies is the Lamiaceae. The highest ranked species with a relative frequency of citation value > 0.3. Infusion, decoction, and in the form of punch are the methods used for the remedies. The study found that the use of herbal remedies is still prevalent in the study area, and many of the commonly used plants have been scientifically validated. A cold storage system is useful for maintaining the quality of hardy kiwifruit. However, extended cold storage periods inevitably result in cold stress, leading to lower fruit marketability; the severity of chilling injury depends on fruit types and cultivars. In this study, the impact of cold storage conditions on the physicochemical properties and antioxidant capacity of two phenotypically different hardy kiwifruit cultivars—'Cheongsan' (large type) and 'Daebo' (small type)—stored at low (L; 3 °C, relative humidity [RH]; 85–90%) and moderate-low (ML; 5 °C, RH; 85–90%) temperatures was determined. Significant differences in fruit firmness and titratable acidity between treatments L and ML were observed in both cultivars during the experimental storage period. Meanwhile, the browning and pitting rates of the 'Cheongsan' fruits in treatment L increased for 8 weeks compared with those of the 'Daebo' fruits in treatments L and ML; nonetheless, fruit decay was observed in the 'Daebo' fruits in treatment ML after 6 weeks. The total chlorophyll, carotenoid, flavonoid, and ascorbic acid concentrations as well as the antioxidant activities of both the cultivars significantly differed between treatments L and ML. After 2 weeks of storage, the 'Cheongsan' fruits in treatment L had lower antioxidant activities and ascorbic acid content than those in treatment ML. These results demonstrate that the quality attributes and antioxidant activity of hardy kiwifruit are influenced by the low-temperature storage conditions and the specific kiwifruit cultivars. Our findings suggest that optimal cold storage conditions, specific to each hardy kiwifruit cultivar, promise to maintain fruit quality, including their health-promoting compounds, during long-term storage. Background: Diet and gut microbiota contribute to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) progression. High-fat diets (HFDs) change gut microbiota compositions, induce gut dysbiosis, and intestinal barrier leakage, which facilitates portal influx of pathogen-associated molecular patterns including lipopolysaccharides (LPS) to the liver and triggers inflammation in NASH. Current therapeutic drugs for NASH have adverse side effects; however, several foods and herbs that exhibit hepatoprotection could be an alternative method to prevent NASH. Methods: We investigated ginger essential oil (GEO) against palm oil-containing HFDs in LPS-injected murine NASH model. Results: GEO reduced plasma alanine aminotransferase levels and hepatic pro-inflammatory cytokine levels; and increased antioxidant catalase, glutathione reductase, and glutathione levels to prevent NASH. GEO alleviated hepatic inflammation through mediated NLR family pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome and LPS/Toll-like receptor four (TLR4) signaling pathways. GEO further increased beneficial bacterial abundance and reduced NASH-associated bacterial abundance. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that GEO prevents NASH progression which is probably associated with the alterations of gut microbiota and inhibition of the LPS/TLR4/NF-κB pathway. Syzygium aromaticum L. (S. aromaticum) used universally as a spice beside as one of classical Indian and Chinese medicine. It contains a variety of biologically active substances, one of them is eugenol which the main component, accounting for 81.1% of the clove oil. It used in traditional medicine as an antibacterial, antineoplastic, antiseptic, and analgesic agent. Previous studies reported its role within photochemical reactions and its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and insecticidal properties, for that, eugenol listed as a promising candidate for the chemical scaffold for pharmaceuticals. The aim of the current study is evaluating of methanolic (80%) clove extract at room temperature in the sunlight (RS) and at low temperatures in the dark (DC) for their antibacterial and anticancer activity applied on different two cancer cell line types breast carcinoma cell line (MCF-7) and hepato-carcinoma cell line type (HePG-2). The results evaluated that both (DC) and (RS) have antibacterial activity against five multidrug-resistant (MDR) isolates. Extract (DC) of clove has a larger zone of inhibition against S. aureus, S. epidermidis, P. aeruginosa, K. pneumonia, and E. coli, with diameter 13, 20, 20, 21, and 15 mm, respectively, with MICs and MBCs of 6.25 mg/mL and 12.5 mg/ml for all isolates except S. aureus showed MIC at 12.5 mg/ml. On the other hand, extract (RS) exhibit zone of inhibition with diameter 17, 10, 15, 18, 17 mm, respectively, with MICs and MBCs of 12.5 mg/mL and 25 mg/ml for all isolates except S. aureus showed MIC at 25 mg/ml. Also, both (DC) and (RS) have cytotoxic activity against two cell lines with significant DNA fragmentation as an indicator of cell apoptosis. The cytotoxic concentration of (DC) with IC50 values for MCF-7 started at 250 µg/ml and reached 46.7% but was 500 and 1000 µg/ml. toxicity reached 100%. Cytotoxicity of (RS) against mcf7 was found to be 48.25% at a concentration of 500 μg/ml, reaching 100% toxicity at the above concentrations 1000 µg/ml. For the HepG-2 cell line, the cytotoxic activity of (DC) was significant at 50.5% at a concentration of 250 µg/ml, whereas RS showed cytotoxic activity at 500 µg/ml with a value of 17.3%. The objective of this research was to explore the viability of pea protein as a substitute for gelatin in the complex coacervation process, with a specific focus on understanding the impact of incorporating an emulsifier into this process. The study involved the preparation of samples with varying polymer mixing ratios (1:1, 1:2, and 2:1) and emulsifier content. As core substances, black pepper and juniper essential oils were utilized, dissolved beforehand in grape seed oil or soybean oil, to minimize the loss of volatile compounds. In total, 24 distinct samples were created, subjected to freeze‐drying to produce powder, and then assessed for their physicochemical properties. Results revealed the significant impact of emulsifier addition on microcapsule parameters. Powders lacking emulsifiers exhibited higher water solubility (57.10%–81.41%) compared to those with emulsifiers (24.64%–40.13%). Moreover, the emulsifier significantly decreased thermal stability (e.g., without emulsifier, Ton = 137.21°C; with emulsifier, Ton = 41.55°C) and adversely impacted encapsulation efficiency (highest efficiency achieved: 67%; with emulsifier: 21%). The Zingiber genus has been widely applied in food and pharmaceuticals due to its varied chemical composition and significant benefits. Zingiber plicatum Škorničk. & Q.B. Nguyễn was described in Vietnam in 2015, yet there has been no report on its phytochemicals and bioactivity. In this study, we first analyzed the chemical composition of essential oil and its antioxidant activities. Isolation of the rhizome essential oil was performed through hydrodistillation using a Clevenger apparatus for 3.5 h, then volatile compositions were determined using gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). Additionally, the antioxidant activities were assessed using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging and ferric reducing power assays. The GC-MS analysis showed a total of 54 volatile components, mainly belonging to monoterpene hydrocarbons (57.69%) and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (28.98%). The main compounds were β-pinene (26.85%), α-pinene (11.73%), limonene (10.03%), and germacrene D (5.26%). The essential oil also showed antioxidant activities, with an IC50 of 84.53 mg/mL for DPPH scavenging activity and an EC50 of 17.3 mg/mL for ferric reducing power. The study investigated three Junipers that grow wild in western Himalaya, India to elucidate extent of yield, chemical variability present in essential oil composition (EOs) as well as their bioactivity potential. The EO yield in J. communis, J. indica and J. semiglobosa was 3.8%, 5.0% and 3.13% (v/w dry weight, aerial twigs), respectively. The gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) identification revealed a total 74 chemical constituents with high qualitative and quantitative variability among the three EOs. Predominance of monoterpene hydrocarbons, α-pinene, β-pinene, β-myrcene, sabinene, α-terpinolene and limonene in J. communis (70.94%) and J. indica (37.99%), while of oxygenated sesquiterpenes in J. semiglobosa (38.06%) EO was found. Principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) analyses based on 12 major volatiles clearly segregated all three EOs revealing high dependence on major chemical constituents' concentration. The EO of J. indica revealed higher antioxidant activity than J. communis and J. semiglobosa. The antimicrobial profiling of EOs against 7 bacterial and 1 yeast strain evaluated using disc diffusion assay exhibited significant inhibitory effects (10-14 mm) against all microorganisms, except Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The MIC values ranged from 2-16% (v/v) against bacterial and 2% (v/v) against fungal pathogens. The findings of present study provide substantial basis for traditional usage of Junipers in medicine, besides other applications.
