Search

An analysis of the Ultra Long Period Cepheids (ULPs) properties could significantly contribute to understanding the Hubble constant tension, e.g. the current discrepancy between determinations based on local distance indicators and those relying on cosmic microwave background measurements. These highly luminous variables are observable beyond 100 Mpc, so if they were confirmed to behave as standard candles, they would allow us a direct measurement of cosmological distances without any secondary distance indicator, thus reducing potential systematic errors in the calibration of the cosmic distance scale. This paper presents an analysis of the largest known sample of 73 ULPs, including 15 objects in nearby galaxies, with new accurate and homogeneous photometry obtained by Gaia DR3, and a new object, in our Galaxy, identified as Long Period Variable in Gaia DR3, but recently reclassified as ULP. The obtained results suggest that, by improving photometric accuracy, the ULP Period-Wesenheit relation shows a smaller dispersion than that obtained in literature and is in better agreement with the Classical Cepheid (CC) one, supporting the hypothesis that ULPs are the extension of the CCs at higher period, mass and luminosity. However, to reach this aim, it is necessary to enrich the sample with high-quality data. The Rubin-LSST survey offers the possibility to achieve this thanks to its photometric characteristics and time extension. Classical Cepheids (DCEPs) are crucial for calibrating the extragalactic distance ladder, ultimately enabling the determination of the Hubble constant through the PL and PW relations they exhibit. Hence it's vital to understand how the PL and PW relations depend on metallicity. This is the purpose of the C-MetaLL survey within which this work is situated. DCEPs are also very important tracers of the young populations placed along the Galactic disc. We aim to enlarge the sample of DCEPs with accurate abundances from high-resolution spectroscopy. Our goal is to extend the range of measured metallicities towards the metal-poor regime to better cover the parameter space. We observed objects in a wide range of Galactocentric radii, allowing us to study in detail the abundance gradients present in the Galactic disc. We present the results of the analysis of 331 spectra obtained for 180 individual DCEPs with a variety of high-resolution spectrographs. We derived accurate atmospheric parameters, radial velocities, and abundances for up to 29 different species. The iron abundances range between 0.5 and -1 dex with a rather homogeneous distribution in metallicity. The sample presented in this paper was complemented with that already published in the context of the C-MetaLL survey, resulting in a total of 292 pulsators whose spectra have been analysed in a homogeneous way. These data were used to study the abundance gradients of the Galactic disc in a range of Galactocentric radii spanning the range 5-20 kpc. For most of the elements we found a clear negative gradient, with a slope of -0.071\pm0.003 dex kpc^-1 for [Fe/H] case. Through a qualitative fit with the Galactic spiral arms we shown how our farthest targets (R_GC>10 kpc) trace both the Outer and OSC arms. We present homogeneous multiband (grizJHKs) time-series observations of 78 Cepheids including 49 fundamental mode variables and 29 first-overtone mode variables. These observations were collected simultaneously using the ROS2 and REMIR instruments at the Rapid Eye Mount telescope. The Cepheid sample covers a large range of distances (0.5 - 19.7 kpc) with varying precision of parallaxes, and thus astrometry-based luminosity fits were used to derive PL and PW relations in optical Sloan (griz) and near-infrared (JHKs) filters. These empirically calibrated relations exhibit large scatter primarily due to larger uncertainties in parallaxes of distant Cepheids, but their slopes agree well with those previously determined in the literature. Using homogeneous high-resolution spectroscopic metallicities of 61 Cepheids covering -1.1 < [Fe/H] < 0.6 dex, we quantified the metallicity dependence of PL and PW relations which varies between $-0.30\pm0.11$ (in Ks) and $-0.55\pm0.12$ (in z) mag/dex in grizJHKs bands. However, the metallicity dependence in the residuals of the PL and PW relations is predominantly seen for metal-poor stars ([Fe/H] < -0.3 dex), which also have larger parallax uncertainties. The modest sample size precludes us from separating the contribution to the residuals due to parallax uncertainties, metallicity effects, and reddening errors. While this Cepheid sample is not optimal for calibrating the Leavitt law, upcoming photometric and spectroscopic datasets of the C-MetaLL survey will allow the accurate derivation of PL and PW relations in the Sloan and near-infrared bandpasses, which will be useful for the distance measurements in the era of the Vera C. Anomalous Cepheids (ACEPs) are intermediate mass metal-poor pulsators mostly discovered in dwarf galaxies of the Local Group. However, recent Galactic surveys, including the Gaia DR3, found a few hundreds of ACEPs in the Milky Way. Their origin is not well understood. We aim to investigate the origin and evolution of Galactic ACEPs by studying for the first time the chemical composition of their atmospheres. We used UVES@VLT to obtain high-resolution spectra for a sample of 9 ACEPs belonging to the Galactic halo. We derived the abundances of 12 elements, including C, Na, Mg, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, Cr, Fe, Ni, Y, and Ba. We complemented these data with literature abundances for an additional three ACEPs that were previously incorrectly classified as type II Cepheids, thus increasing the sample to a total of 12 stars. All the investigated ACEPs have an iron abundance [Fe/H]$<-1.5$ dex as expected from theoretical predictions for these pulsators. The abundance ratios of the different elements to iron show that the ACEP's chemical composition is generally consistent with that of the Galactic halo field stars, except the Sodium, which is found overabundant in 9 out of the 11 ACEPs where it was measured, in close similarity with second-generation stars in the Galactic Globular Clusters. The same comparison with dwarf and ultra-faint satellites of the Milky Way reveals more differences than similarities so it is unlikely that the bulk of Galactic ACEPs originated in such a kind of galaxies which subsequently dissolved in the Galactic halo. The principal finding of this work is the unexpected overabundance of Sodium in ACEPs. We explored several hypotheses to explain this feature, finding that the most promising scenario is the evolution of low-mass stars in a binary system with either mass transfer or merging. Classical Cepheids (DCEPs) play a fundamental role in the calibration of the extra-galactic distance ladder which eventually leads to the determination of the Hubble constant($H_0$) thanks to the period-luminosity ($PL$) and period-Wesenheit ($PW$) relations exhibited by these pulsating variables. Therefore, it is of great importance to establish the dependence of $PL/PW$ relations on metallicity. We aim at quantifying the metallicity dependence of the Galactic DCEPs' $PL/PW$ relations for a variety of photometric bands ranging from optical to near-infrared. We gathered a literature sample of 910 DCEPs with available [Fe/H] values from high-resolution spectroscopy or metallicities from \gaia\ Radial Velocity Spectrometer. For all these stars, we collected photometry in the $G_{BP},G_{RP},G,I,V,J,H,K_S$ bands and astrometry from the \gaia\ DR3. These data have been used to investigate the metal dependence of both intercepts and slopes of a variety of $PL/PW$ relations at multiple wavelengths. We find a large negative metallicity effect on the intercept ($\gamma$ coefficient) of all the $PL/PW$ relations investigated in this work, while present data still do not allow us to draw firm conclusions regarding the metal dependence of the slope ($\delta$ coefficient). The typical values of $\gamma$ are around $-0.4:-0.5$ mag/dex, i.e. larger than most of the recent determinations present in the literature. We carried out several tests which confirm the robustness of our results. As in our previous works, we find that the inclusion of global zero point offset of \gaia\ parallaxes provides smaller values of $\gamma$ (in an absolute sense). However, the assumption of the geometric distance of the LMC seems to indicate that larger values of $\gamma$ (in an absolute sense) would be preferred., Comment: 20 pages, 26 figures. Classical Cepheids (DCEPs) are the most important standard candles in the extra-galactic distance scale thanks to the Period-Luminosity ($\rm PL$), Period-Luminosity-Color ($\rm PLC$) and Period-Wesenheit ($\rm PW$) relations that hold for these objects. The advent of the {\it Gaia} mission, and in particular the Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) provided accurate parallaxes to calibrate these relations. In order to fully exploit {\it Gaia} measurements, the zero point (ZP) of {\it Gaia} parallaxes should be determined with an accuracy of a few $\rm \mu as$. The individual ZP corrections provided by the {\it Gaia} team depend on the magnitude and the position on the sky of the target. In this paper, we use an implicit method that relies on the Cepheid $\rm PL$ and $\rm PW$ relations to evaluate the ensemble {\it Gaia} parallax zero point. The best inferred estimation of the offset value needed to additionally correct (after the {\it Gaia} team correction) the {\it Gaia} parallaxes of the present DCEP sample, amounts to $\rm -22\pm 4\, \mu as$. This value is in agreement with the most recent literature values and confirms that the correction proposed by the {\it Gaia} team over-corrected the parallaxes.\\ As a further application of our results, we derive an estimate of the Large Magellanic Cloud distance ($\rm \mu_0=18.49\pm 0.06\, mag$), in very good agreement with the currently accepted value obtained through geometric methods., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Classical Cepheids (DCEPs) are the first fundamental step in the calibration of the cosmological distance ladder. Furthermore, they represent powerful tracers in the context of Galactic studies. We have collected high-resolution spectroscopy with UVES@VLT for a sample of 65 DCEPs. The majority of them are the faintest DCEPs ever observed in the Milky Way. For each target, we derived accurate atmospheric parameters, radial velocities, and abundances for 24 different species. The resulting iron abundances range between +0.3 and $-$1.1 dex with the bulk of stars at [Fe/H]$\sim-0.5$ dex. Our sample includes the most metal-poor DCEPs observed so far with high-resolution spectroscopy. We complement our sample with literature data obtaining a complete sample of 637 DCEPs and use Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) photometry to determine the distance of the DCEPs from the Period-Wesenheit-Metallicity relation. Our more external data trace the Outer arm (at Galactocentric radius ($R_{GC})\sim$16--18 kpc) which appears significantly warped. We investigate the metallicity gradient of the Galactic disc using this large sample, finding a slope of $-0.060 \pm 0.002$ dex kpc$^{-1}$, in very good agreement with previous results based both on DCEPs and open clusters. We also report a possible break in the gradient at $R_{GC}$=9.25 kpc with slopes of $-0.063 \pm 0.007$ and $-0.079 \pm 0.003$ dex kpc$^{-1}$ for the inner and outer sample, respectively. The two slopes differ by more than 1 $\sigma$. This work demonstrates that a middle size ring laser gyroscope (RLG) can be a very sensitive and robust instrument for rotational seismology, even if it operates in a quite noisy environment. The RLG has a square cavity, $1.60\times 1.60$ m$^2$, and it lies in a plane orthogonal to the Earth rotational axis. The Fabry-Perot optical cavities along the diagonals of the square were accessed and their lengths were locked to a reference laser. Through a quite simple locking circuit, we were able to keep the sensor fully operative for 14 days. The obtained long term stability is of the order of 3~nanorad/s and the short term sensitivity close is to 2~nanorad/s$\cdot$Hz$^{-1/2}$. We employed the {\it VISTA near-infrared $YJK_\mathrm{s}$ survey of the Magellanic System} (VMC), to analyse the $Y,\,J,\,K_\mathrm{s}$ light curves of $\delta$ Cepheid stars (DCEPs) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Our sample consists of 4408 objects accounting for 97 per cent of the combined list of OGLE\,IV and {\it Gaia}\,DR2 DCEPs. We determined a variety of period-luminosity ($PL$) and period-Wesenheit $PW$ relationships for Fundamental (F) and First Overtone (1O) pulsators. We discovered for the first time a break in these relationships for 1O DCEPs at $P$=0.58 d. We derived relative individual distances for DCEPs in the LMC with a precision of $\sim$1 kpc, calculating the position angle of the line of nodes and inclination of the galaxy: $\theta$=145.6$\pm$1.0 deg and $i$=25.7$\pm$0.4 deg. The bar and the disc are seen under different viewing angles. We calculated the ages of the pulsators, finding two main episodes of DCEP formation lasting $\sim$40 Myr which happened 93 and 159 Myr ago. Likely as a result of its past interactions with the SMC, the LMC shows a non-planar distribution, with considerable structuring: the bar is divided into two distinct portions, the eastern and the western displaced by more than 1 kpc from each other. Similar behaviour is shown by the spiral arms. The LMC disc appears "flared" and thick, with a disc scale height of $h\sim 0.97$ kpc. This feature can be explained by strong tidal interactions with the Milky Way and/or the Small Magellanic Cloud or past merging events with now disrupted LMC satellites., Comment: 22 pages, 21 figures, accepted for publication on MNRAS. Classical Cepheids (DCEPs) represent a fundamental tool to calibrate the extragalactic distance scale. However, they are also powerful stellar population tracers in the context of Galactic studies. The forthcoming Data Release 3 (DR3) of the Gaia mission will allow us to study, with unprecedented detail, the structure, the dynamics, and the chemical properties of the Galactic disc, and in particular of the spiral arms, where most Galactic DCEPs reside. In this paper, we aim to quantify the metallicity dependence of the Galactic DCEPs' period-Wesenheit ($PWZ$) relation in the Gaia bands. We adopted a sample of 499 DCEPs with metal abundances from high-resolution spectroscopy, in conjunction with Gaia Early Data Release 3 parallaxes and photometry to calibrate a $PWZ$ relation in the Gaia bands. We find a significant metallicity term, of the order of $-$0.5 mag/dex, which is larger than the values measured in the near-infrared (NIR) bands by different authors. Our best $PWZ$ relation is $W=(-5.988\pm0.018)-(3.176\pm0.044)(\log P-1.0)-(0.520\pm0.090){\rm [Fe/H]}$. We validated our $PWZ$ relations by using the distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud as a benchmark, finding very good agreement with the geometric distance provided by eclipsing binaries. As an additional test, we evaluated the metallicity gradient of the young Galactic disc, finding $-0.0527 \pm 0.0022$ dex/kpc, which is in very good agreement with previous results., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures. Classical Cepheids (DCEPs) are the most important primary indicators of the extragalactic distance scale. Establishing the dependence on metallicity of their period--luminosity and period--Wesenheit ($PLZ$/$PWZ$) relations has deep consequences on the calibration of secondary distance indicators that lead to the final estimate of the Hubble constant (H$_0$). We collected high-resolution spectroscopy for 47 DCEPs plus 1 BL Her variables with HARPS-N@TNG and derived accurate atmospheric parameters, radial velocities and metal abundances. We measured spectral lines for 29 species and characterized their chemical abundances, finding very good agreement with previous results. We re-determined the ephemerides for the program stars and measured their intensity-averaged magnitudes in the $V,I,J,H,K_s$ bands. We complemented our sample with literature data and used the Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) to investigate the $PLZ$/$PWZ$ relations for Galactic DCEPs in a variety of filter combinations. We find that the solution without any metallicity term is ruled out at more than the 5 $\sigma$ level. Our best estimate for the metallicity dependence of the intercept of the $PLK_s$, $PWJK_s$, $PWVK_s$ and $PWHVI$ relations with three parameters, is $-0.456\pm$0.099, $-0.465\pm$0.071, $-0.459\pm$0.107 and $-0.366\pm$0.089 mag/dex, respectively. These values are significantly larger than the recent literature. The present data are still inconclusive to establish whether or not also the slope of the relevant relationships depends on metallicity. Applying a correction to the standard zero point offset of the Gaia parallaxes has the same effect of reducing by $\sim$22\% the size of the metallicity dependence on the intercept of the PLZ/PWZ relations., Comment: 31 pages, 17 Figures. Classical Cepheids (DCEPs) are the most important primary indicators for the extragalactic distance scale, but they are also important objects per se, allowing us to put constraints on the physics of intermediate-mass stars and the pulsation theories. We have investigated the peculiar DCEP HD 344787, which is known to exhibit the fastest positive period change among DCEPs along with a quenching amplitude of the light variation. We have used high-resolution spectra obtained with HARPS-N@TNG for HD 344787 and the more famous Polaris DCEP, to infer their detailed chemical abundances. Results from the analysis of new time-series photometry of HD 344787 obtained by the TESS satellite are also reported. The double mode nature of HD344787 pulsation is confirmed by analysis of the TESS light curve, although with rather tiny amplitudes of a few tens of millimag. This is an indication that HD344787 is on the verge of quenching the pulsation. Analysis of the HARPS-N@TNG spectra reveals an almost solar abundance and no depletion of carbon and oxygen. Hence, the star appears to have not gone through the first dredge-up. Similar results are obtained for Polaris. Polaris and HD344787 are confirmed to be both most likely at their first crossing of the instability strip (IS). The two stars are likely at the opposite borders of the IS for first overtone DCEPs with metal abundance Z=0.008. A comparison with other DCEPs which are also thought to be at their first crossing allows us to speculate that the differences we see in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram might be due to differences in the properties of the DCEP progenitors during the main sequence phase., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, Astronomy & Astrophysics in press. Classical Cepheids (DCEPs) are the most important primary indicators for the extragalactic distance scale. Establishing the dependence on metallicity of their period--luminosity and period--Wesenheit (PL/PW) relations has deep consequences on the estimate of the Hubble constant (H$_0$). We aim at investigating the dependence on metal abundance ([Fe/H]) of the PL/PW relations for Galactic DCEPs. We combined proprietary and literature photometric and spectroscopic data, gathering a total sample of 413 Galactic DCEPs (372 fundamental mode -- DCEP\_F and 41 first overtone -- DCEP\_1O) and constructed new metallicity-dependent PL/PW relations in the near infra-red (NIR) adopting the Astrometric Based Luminosity. We find indications that the slopes of the PL$(K_S)$ and PW$(J,K_S)$ relations for Galactic DCEPs might depend on metallicity when compared to the Large Magellanic Cloud relationships. Therefore, we have used a generalized form of the PL/PW relations to simultaneously take into account the metallicity dependence of the slope and intercept of these relations. We calculated PL/PW relations which, for the first time, explicitly include a metallicity dependence of both the slope and intercept terms. Although the insufficient quality of the available data makes our results not yet conclusive, they are relevant from a methodological point of view. The new relations are linked to the geometric measurement of the distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud and allowed us to estimate a {\it Gaia} DR2 parallax zero point offset $\Delta \varpi$=0.0615$\pm$0.004 mas from the dataset of DCEPs used in this work., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. Classical Cepheids (DCEPs) are important astrophysical objects not only as standard candles in the determination of the cosmic distance ladder, but also as a testbed for the stellar evolution theory, thanks to the strict connection between their pulsation [period(s), amplitudes] and stellar (luminosity, mass, effective temperature, metallicity) parameters. We aim at unveiling the nature of the Galactic DCEP V363 Cas and other DCEPs showing cosmic abundances of lithium in their atmospheres. We have collected three epochs high-resolution spectroscopy for V363 Cas with HARPS-N@TNG. Accurate stellar parameters: effective temperatures, gravities, micro-turbulences, radial velocities, and metal abundances were measured for this star. We detected a lithium abundance of A(Li)=2.86+-0.10 dex, along with iron, carbon and oxygen abundances of [Fe/H]=-0.30+-0.12 dex, [C/H]=-0.06+-0.15 dex and [O/H]=0.00+-0.12 dex. V363 Cas is the fifth among the Milky Way DCEPs to exhibit a Li-rich feature. An analysis of historical time-series spanning a hundred year interval shows that the period of V363 Cas is increasing, with a sharp acceleration after HJD=2453000. This is a clear hint of first crossing of the instability strip. We present a new extended and detailed set of models for Classical Cepheid pulsators at solar chemical composition ($Z=0.02$, $Y=0.28$) based on a well tested nonlinear hydrodynamical approach. In order to model the possible dependence on crucial assumptions such as the Mass-Luminosity relation of central Helium burning intermediate-mass stars or the efficiency of superadiabatic convection, the model set was computed by varying not only the pulsation mode and the stellar mass but also the Mass-Luminosity relation and the mixing length parameter that is used to close the system of nonlinear hydrodynamical and convective equations. The dependence of the predicted boundaries of the instability strip as well as of both light and radial velocity curves on the assumed Mass-Luminosity and the efficiency of superadiabatic convection is discussed. Nonlinear Period-Mass-Luminosity-Temperature, Period-Radius and Period-Mass-Radius relations are also computed. The theoretical atlas of bolometric light curves for both the fundamental and first overtone mode has been converted in the Gaia filters $G$, $G_{BP}$ and $G_{BR}$ and the corresponding mean magnitudes have been derived. Finally the first theoretical Period-Luminosity-Color and Period-Wesenheit relations in the Gaia filters are provided and the resulting theoretical parallaxes are compared with Gaia Data Release 2 results for both fundamental and first overtone Galactic Cepheids., Comment: Accepted for publication on ApJ Supplement, 43 pages, 10 figures, 12 tables

This project aims at exploiting the wide-field and limiting-magnitude capabilities of the LSST to fully characterise the resolved stellar populations in/around six Local Group stellar systems of different morphological type at ~30 to ~400 kpc distance from us. We selected targets that host red giant branch (RGB) stars which are within the reach of Gaia and not yet (all) saturated with the LSST. We will use RR Lyrae stars, Cepheids, SX Phoenicis, delta Scuti stars and Long Period Variables, along with the Color Magnitude Diagram of the resolved stellar populations in these 6 systems to: i) trace their different stellar generations over a spatial extension and with a depth that only the LSST can achieve; ii) measure their distances using variable stars of different type/parent stellar population and the Tip of the RGB; iii) map their 3D structures up to the periphery of their halos; iv) search for tidal streams; and v) study their Star Formation Histories over unprecedented large fractions of their bodies. Our ultimate goals are to provide a complete picture of these nearby stellar systems all the way through to their periphery, and to directly link and cross-calibrate the Gaia and LSST projects., Comment: 12 Pages and 2 Figures submitted to Call for White Papers on LSST Cadence Optimization
