In the American hit series 24 Hours (2001-2010) produced by Fox Television, Jack Bauer, a CTU agent (Counter Terrorist Unit, LA) always saves the day by stopping various terrorist actions, prevents nuclear bombs (known as the nucs) from going off, and viruses from decimating the population of the United States (and the world). But first and foremost, he identifies, finds and finally annihilates the real enemy (the Arabs or the Russians) who are behind all such terrorist activities. It is no surprise that such a versatile agent can do so much and mostly by himself. After all, he is a contemporary superhero, and superheroes, battered as they usually are, always win with nameless multitudes. In all his attitude to fighting and war, be they real or cyber battles, Jack Bauer is strangely similar to a medieval superhero, Sir Isumbras, who also has to fight his own weakness, overcome the grief after losing his family, and in the end boldly face death fighting countless Saracens. While Sir Isumbras is an archetypal knight, a paragon of virtue, a defender of the faith, Jack Bauer is a contemporary version of the Isumbras figure, fearless and willing to sacrifice everything for the greater good, the safety of his country. What follows is a reading of the two characters within the psychological framework of allies and enemies in medieval romance and their reincarnations in contemporary culture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The 3 sg. pret. form talgidai, discovered in 1961, belongs to the earliest stratum of the Runic Norse corpus. But since the ending -dai (for expected -de) is incompatible with the traditional derivation of the weak preterite from a periphrastic construction in *-dhōm (< *dhoh1m), *-dhēs, *-dhēt, etc., much scholarly effort has been invested in explaining the final -ai as an error. This paper maintains that talgidai is probably a real form, and that the standard derivation of the weak preterite from a periphrasis in 3 sg. *-dhēt is problematic on independent grounds. It is argued that a periphrastic construction with a 3 sg. perfect middle *-(dhe)dh(h1)oi provides at least as good an explanation of the weak preterite as the traditional theory. This paper argues that John Gower in his literary adaptations introduces strategic narrative changes that amount to more than being inferior approximations of the original classical "Tale of Actaeon". These changes, we claim, challenge the authority as well as the literary and cultural uniqueness of the classical sources he borrowed from. We discuss Gower's creative manipulation of his classical sources, specifically the differences between his and Ovid's version of "The Tale of Actaeon," pointing up the former's authorial uniqueness as an original English poet.We conclude that Gower uses his borrowed material according to his poem's moral purpose. He does not passively paraphrase his classical sources into Middle English; rather, he innovatively rewrites them in light of the Confessio's exemplary texture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The concept of humanity has taken on new meanings in the era of posthumanist debate. Engaging both prehumanist and posthumanist perspectives, Liliana Sikorska strips away layers of cognitive mappings performed over hundreds of years in Western culture to expose in her recent essay the mechanisms that have exacerbated the East-West divide. While the majority of discussed texts come from medieval and Victorian literature and culture, it becomes obvious to the reader of her book that the issues she explores are still haunting the lives of people and nations worldwide today. The term „Sprachgeist“ is essential for Bopp's conception of language. So far this concept has been almost completely neglected in linguistic research. However, its use shows that Bopp is not only interested in the formal representation of languages, but that he considers language obviously from the perspective of the speaker of the language in his time, and, furthermore, that he tries actually to understand his own language and foreign and extinct languages as well. Firstly, the often-discussed concepts “Lautgesetz" and “Analogy" are compared with the concept “Sprachgeist". Afterwards the use of these concepts is pursued within in the Germanic languages.
