Abstract Background Madelung’s disease (MD), alternatively referred to as benign symmetric lipomatosis, multiple symmetric lipomatosis, or Launois–Bensaude syndrome, is an uncommon benign disorder marked by symmetric proliferation of adipose tissue in the head, neck, and torso regions. Case description In this case, the patient was a female with the late middle-aged demographic, diagnosed with Type I MD. Notably, she exhibited no prior history of alcohol consumption, and there was no family history of MD. Subsequent to the clinical diagnosis, the patient underwent medical imaging assessments to delineate the surgical parameters. Post-surgery, she demonstrated a favorable recovery trajectory, marked by the absence of any surgical complications. Result The patient underwent successful surgical excision of the lipomatous mass. Postoperatively, she had an uneventful recovery with no complications and no recurrence observed during the follow-up period of seven months. Conclusion Timely diagnosis and early surgical intervention play a pivotal role in enhancing the quality of life for individuals with MD. Preoperative medical imaging examinations function as highly effective tools, contributing to heightened surgical safety and a decreased probability of encountering complications during the surgical procedure.

Highlights Ordered intermetallic pallium-zinc (PdZn) electrocatalyst comprising a high density of PdZn pairs is synthesized for achieving co-adsorption and co-activation carbon dioxide and nitrate. Both operando measurements and theoretical calculations reveal that the PdZn pairs provide a dual-site geometric structure conducive to the key C–N coupling with a low kinetical barrier. The intermetallic PdZn displays excellent performance for the co-reduction of nitrate (NO3 –) and carbon dioxide (CO2) toward urea, with a maximum FEurea of 62.78% at a small potential of – 0.4 V versus RHE.

Abstract A variable coefficient segmented iron loss calculation model is proposed for high‐voltage multi‐pole asynchronous motors, which fully considers the influence of high‐order harmonic magnetic density on such motors. This model introduces additional hysteresis loss, improved eddy current loss coefficients, and rotation magnetisation coefficients to account for changes in losses due to small hysteresis loops and skin effect, as well as rotation magnetisation losses. A 710 kW 10‐pole asynchronous motor is used as the research object. A full‐domain iron loss calculation model considering stator and rotor tooth top surface losses is developed. The model can be used to accurately calculate the overall and local harmonic iron losses in the stator and rotor cores of high‐voltage multi‐pole asynchronous motors. And quantitatively analyse the distribution pattern of any harmonic iron loss at any location in the motor core. It realises the refinement calculation and analysis of iron losses in the whole domain of high‐voltage multi‐pole asynchronous motor. Finally, no‐load and load tests were conducted on the 710 kW 10‐pole asynchronous motor. The iron losses of the 710 kW 10‐pole asynchronous motor at no load and load are calculated using the above mentioned model and the classical trinomial constant factor model. The results are compared with the measured iron loss values. It is proved that the iron loss model is more accurate in calculating the iron loss of high‐voltage multi‐pole asynchronous motor. The result helps researchers to calculate the iron loss distribution of high voltage motors more accurately. Thus, the design and operating parameters of the motor can be optimised to improve the efficiency and performance of the motor. It provides the necessary technical support and key basis for the reduction of loss and energy saving of high‐voltage motors and the optimisation of their core structure.

Dimethyl sulfide (DMS), an organic volatile sulfide produced from Dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP), exerts a significant impact on the global climate change. Utilizing published literature data spanning from 2005 to 2020, a BP neural network (BPNN) model of the surface seawater DMS in the Yellow and East China Sea (YECS) was developed to elucidate the influence of various marine factors on the DMS cycle. Results indicated that the six parameters inputted BPNN model, that include the time (month), latitude and longitude, sea-surface chlorophyll a (Chl-a), sea-surface temperature (SST), and sea-surface salinity (SSS), yielded the optimized simulation results (R2 = 0.71). The optimized estimation of surface seawater DMS in the YECS were proved to be closely aligned with the observed data across all seasons, which demonstrated the model’s robust applicability. DMS concentration in surface seawater were found to be affected by multiple factors such as Chl-a and SST. Comparative analysis of the three environmental parameters revealed that Chl-a exhibited the most significant correlation with surface seawater DMS concentration in the YECS (R2 = 0.20). This underscores the pivotal role of chlorophyll in phytoplankton photosynthesis and DMS production, emphasizing its importance as a non-negligible factor in the study of DMS and its sulfur derivatives. Furthermore, surface seawater DMS concentration in the YECS exhibited positive correlations with Chl-a and SST, while displaying a negative correlation with SSS. The DMS concentration in the YECS show substantial seasonal variations, with the maximum value (5.69 nmol/L) in summer followed in decreasing order by spring (3.96 nmol/L), autumn (3.18 nmol/L), and winter (1.60 nmol/L). In the YECS, there was a gradual decrease of DMS concentration from the nearshore to the offshore, especially with the highest DMS concentration concentrated in the Yangtze River Estuary Basin and the south-central coastal part off the Zhejiang Province. Apart from being largely composed by the release of large amounts of nutrients from anthropogenic activities and changes in ocean temperature, the spatial and temporal variability of DMS may be driven by additional physicochemical parameters.

Abstract Biochar, a black carbon material produced by high‐temperature, low‐oxygen pyrolysis of organic solids, can improve soil properties and realize carbon neutrality. However, how to effectively produce and apply biochar in the face of the complex soil environment and intractable widespread land degradation is still uncertain. This review is based on 1073 sets of data in 316 publications to address this issue. Firstly, the impact of different process parameters, namely feedstocks, pyrolysis temperature and activation on physicochemical properties of biochar are systematically summarized. Secondly, the effect of biochar on different soil degradation problems are reviewed from the perspective of the interaction between the physicochemical properties of biochar and soil characteristics. The “matching” of biochar properties, level of degradation and environmental factors can be used to design the desired biochar. Finally, future research should focus on biochar aging and costs and benefits of using biochar. The concept of “artificial intelligence designed biochar” is discussed to improve the degree of automation in biochar production and the predictability and suitability of its application for specific cases.

Abstract The immunonutritional status has important effects on outcomes for cancer patients. Albumin-to-globulin ratio (AGR) and the prognostic nutrition index (PNI) are often used to assess the immunonutritional status of cancer patients. However, the clinical significance of these factors in colorectal cancer (CRC) remains unclear. We aimed to evaluate the clinical significance of the AGR and PNI in CRC. We reviewed the clinical data of 511 patients with CRC in two hospitals. Data from one institution was used as the training cohort. The optimal cutoff values for AGR and PNI in the training cohort were 1.4 and 48.65, respectively. Patients in both the low AGR and low PNI groups had poor overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS), while those in the low AGR-low PNI group had the lowest OS and PFS. Multivariate analysis revealed that preoperative AGR, preoperative PNI, gross type, and TNM stage were independent prognostic factors influencing OS in patients with CRC. Preoperative AGR, preoperative PNI, and TNM stage were independently associated with PFS in patients with CRC. According to the results of multivariate analysis in the training cohort, we developed the nomograms for OS and PFS and performed internal and external validation, which showed good prediction ability of the nomograms. In conclusion, preoperative AGR and PNI can be used as effective indicators to predict survival for patients with CRC. AGR and PNI may help develop effective adjuvant-therapy schedules.

Biomass-derived carbon has demonstrated great potentials as advanced electrode for capacitive deionization (CDI), owing to good electroconductivity, easy availability, intrinsic pores/channels. However, conventional simple pyrolysis of biomass always generates inadequate porosity with limited surface area. Moreover, biomass-derived carbon also suffers from poor wettability and single physical adsorption of ions, resulting in limited desalination performance. Herein, pore structure optimization and element co-doping are integrated on banana peels (BP)-derived carbon to construct hierarchically porous and B, N co-doped carbon with large ions-accessible surface area. A unique expansion-activation (EA) strategy is proposed to modulate the porosity and specific surface area of carbon. Furthermore, B, N co-doping could increase the ions-accessible sites with improved hydrophilicity, and promote ions adsorption. Benefitting from the synergistic effect of hierarchical porosity and B, N co-doping, the resultant electrode manifest enhanced CDI performance for NaCl with large desalination capacity (29.5 mg g−1), high salt adsorption rate (6.2 mg g−1 min−1), and versatile adsorption ability for other salts. Density functional theory reveals the enhanced deionization mechanism by pore and B, N co-doping. This work proposes a facile EA strategy for pore structure modulation of biomass-derived carbon, and demonstrates great potentials of integrating pore and heteroatoms-doping on constructing high-performance CDI electrode.

The stable and safe operation of highway/railway lines is largely dependent on the dynamic behavior of subgrade fillings. Clay soils are widely used in subgrade construction and are compacted at different remolding water contents and compaction degrees, depending on the field conditions. As a result, their dynamic behaviors may vary, which have not been fully investigated until now. To clarify this aspect, a series of cyclic triaxial tests were carried out in this study with three typical remolding water contents (w = 19%, 24%, and 29%), corresponding to the optimum water content as well as its dry and wet sides, and two compaction degrees (Dc = 0.8 and 0.9), which were selected according to the field-testing data. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) tests were also conducted on typical samples to investigate the corresponding soil fabric variations. The findings indicate the following: (a) The soil fabric at the optimum remolding water content and its dry side was characterized by a clay aggregate assembly with a bimodal pore size distribution. In contrast, the soil fabric on the wet side of the optimum water content consisted of dispersed clay particles with a unimodal pore size distribution. (b) As the compaction degree increased, to ensure the optimum water content and its dry side, large pores were compressed to make them smaller, while small pores remained unchanged. Comparatively, all the pores on the wet side were compressed to make them smaller. (c) For each compaction degree, as the remolding water content increased, a non-monotonic changing pattern was identified for both the permanent strain and resilient modulus; the permanent strain first decreased and then increased, while, for the resilient modulus, an initial increasing trend and then a decreasing trend were identified. In addition, a larger changing rate of the permanent strain (resilient modulus) was observed on the dry side, indicating a larger effect of the remolding water content. (d) For each remolding water content, as the compaction degree increased, the permanent strain exhibited a decreasing trend, but an increasing trend was identified for the resilient modulus. Moreover, the rate of change in the permanent strain (resilient modulus) on the dry side of the optimum water content was larger than that on the wet side. In contrast, the minimum rate of change was identified at the optimum water content. The obtained results allowed for the effects of the remolding water content and compaction degree on the dynamic behavior to be analyzed, and they helped guide the construction and maintenance of the subgrade.

The experiment was conducted to investigate the potential effects of steviol glycosides on growth performance, rumen fermentation processes, and microbial diversity in Hu sheep. A single-factor design was used for the trial. Twenty healthy weaned Hu lambs, possessing comparable body weights averaging 18.31 ± 1.24 kg, were randomly allocated into two distinct groups: the control group (CON) and the experimental group (STE), with each comprising 10 lambs. The CON was fed the basal diet, and the STE was supplemented with 0.07% steviol glycosides based on the basal diet. During the experimental period, variations in body weight and feed intake were closely monitored and recorded. After feeding for 90 d, blood was collected to determine blood biochemical indices, and rumen fluid samples were gathered for an in-depth analysis of rumen fermentation parameters and microbial diversity. The outcomes revealed no statistically significant differences in growth performance or serum biochemical indices between the two groups (p > 0.05). Rumen pH in STE and CON was within the normal range. The rumen ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) and acetic acid (AA) content of STE decreased significantly compared with CON (p < 0.05). No significant variations were observed in the levels of other volatile fatty acids (VFAs) between the two groups (p > 0.05). The rumen microbial OTUs count, as well as the Shannon, Simpson, Chao1, and Ace indices, were notably lower in the STE group compared to the CON group (p < 0.05). Additionally, at the phylum level, the relative abundance of Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, and Proteobacteria collectively accounted for over 97% of the total phylum composition. In comparison to the CON group, the STE group exhibited an increase in the relative abundance of Proteobacteria (p < 0.05), accompanied by a significant reduction in the relative abundance of Patescibacteria and Desulfobacteria (p < 0.05). At the genus level, there was a notable increase in the relative abundance of Prevotella_7 and Succinivibrionaceae_UCG_001 in the STE group, whereas the relative abundance of Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group significantly decreased (p < 0.05). According to the correlation analysis between rumen microflora and VFAs, the relative abundance of Succinivibrionaceae_UCG_001 displayed a significant negative correlation with AA (p < 0.05), whereas Lactobacillus exhibited a notable positive correlation with isobutyric acid (IBA) (p < 0.05). In summary, steviol glycosides had no significant effect on the production performance and blood biochemical indexes of Hu sheep. Steviol glycosides can improve rumen fermentation parameters and rumen microflora structure of Hu sheep and have a certain effect on rumen microbial diversity and composition.

In the fragile desert ecosystems of the world, sand-fixing measures play an irreplaceable part in ecological restoration. However, it is unclear how the long-term establishment of sand-fixing measures affects soil particle distribution and soil nutrients for the desert – Yellow River coastal ecotone. Therefore, we selected sand-fixing measures that have been established for fifteen years: Pinus sylvestris (PS), Populus alba (PA), Elaeagnus angustifolia (EA), Hedysarum scoparium (HS), Salix psammophila (SC), Salix psammophila checkerboard barriers (SCSB), and mobile sandy land (LS). We analyzed soil physical properties, chemical properties, soil fractal dimension (D), and multi-fractal parameters in the top soil layer (0–20 cm). A curcumin delivery system was prepared by using the pH-shift method to load curcumin into the oil phase core of soybean oil body, which has a natural oil-in-water structure. The encapsulation characteristics of the emulsion were studied in terms of its encapsulation efficiency, particle size, zeta potential, and microstructure. The structural changes were analyzed by endogenous fluorescence spectroscopy and sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), and the storage stability, pH stability and oxidation stability were evaluated. The results showed that curcumin was successfully encapsulated with soybean oil body by the pH-shift method. At pH 1.0, the highest encapsulation efficiency of 65.55% was observed, and the lipid droplets were regular in shape and uniform in size, with an average particle size of 590.5 nm. The oxidative stability was good, but the storage stability and pH stability were poor. Protein structure was not changed significantly compared to untreated oil body. This study may provide a reference for future research on natural oil body to carry lipophilic polyphenols such as curcumin.

Highlights (1) Quantified the level of heavy metal(loid) pollution around the metal ore processing, mining and smelting factories in Chifeng. (2) Heavy metal(loid) risks were assessed based on optimized ecological and health risk model. (3) Cd, As and Pb posed a relatively serious threat to the region. (4) Targeted emission reduction and soil remediation measures are required to reduce heavy metal(loid) pollution in factories.

Rosa rugosa is a famous Chinese traditional flowering species with high economic value. Flowering transition is an important process in plant growth and development. Although characterization of the flowering transition process has made great progress in some plants such as model plants, the process in R. rugosa has not been rigorously characterized to establish a mechanism. In this study, the changes of buds during flowering transition in R. rugosa ‘Duoji Huangmei’ were analyzed through transcriptomic sequencing combined with morphological and physiological index determinations. Results showed that with the morphology changes of buds, both sugar and starch content showed a similar up-down pattern while phytohormones content displayed various trends, which implied that sugar, starch and phytohormones might play diverse roles during flowering transition in R. rugosa. Moreover, a total of 4363 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified at three developmental stages. Among them, 74 DEGs were involved in metabolism, transport, and signal transduction of sugar, starch, and phytohormones, as well as photoperiod and vernalization response. We proposed that these DEGs were not regulated independently but interacted with each other to construct a gene-gene network to regulate flowering transition of R. rugosa, and the regulatory network from vegetative growth stage (S1) to flowering transition stage (S2) was more complicated. These results further enriched the study of flowering transition in Rosa and lay an important foundation for breeding new varieties with desired floral traits.

Rosa rugosa is a multifunctional species with various applications in fragrance extraction and ornamental, medical, and edible purposes. Compared to other species of Rosa, R. rugosa exhibits greater resistance to salt stresses; however, the mechanisms underlying its salinity tolerance are still unclear. Thus, we assessed the salt tolerance of 16 R. rugosa germplasms based on the changes in morphology and physiology under different salt concentrations. Among them, two cultivars ('Zizhi' and 'Fenzizhi') were chosen for transcriptome sequencing. The differentially expressed genes (DEGs) associated with phytohormone synthesis and signalling pathways, ROS production, carbohydrate metabolism and transport, stress response and resistance were identified as responding to salt stress in R. rugosa. PPI network analysis further identified two DEGs, SCL28 and E2F1, which exhibited the most interactions with other DEGs. Consequently, this research contributes to a greater understanding of salinity tolerance mechanism in R. rugosa and could provide gene resources for breeding salt-tolerant cultivars in Rosa.

Summary: Some Zinc finger (ZnF) proteins are required for masculinization in silkworms. In the present study, a masculinizer gene (Mr-Masc) with multi-tissue expression is identified in the freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii. The Mr-Masc is clustered into a separate branch with ZnF proteins from decapoda by phylogenetic tree analysis. Moreover, Mr-Masc silencing in male postlarvae prawn results in functional sex reversal females known as neo-females, which are applied to all-male monosex offspring breeding. This manipulation has been significant in sexually dimorphic cultured species. In addition, several significantly expressed transcripts are enriched and the effects of crucial signal pathways are focused through the comparative transcriptomic analysis in Mr-Masc gene knockdown. The significantly differentially expressed epidermal growth factor, upregulated low-density lipoprotein receptor, flotillin, and sex-lethal unigenes, downregulated heat shock proteins and forkhead box homologs are focused. The finding offers an innovative perspective on Masc proteins’ evolution and physiological function.

The effects of isochlorogenic acid (ICGA) on ewes rumen environment, microbial diversity, and immunity at different physiological stages (estrus, pregnancy and lactation) were studied in this experiment. Twenty healthy female Hu lambs of 1.5 months with similar body weight (17.82 ± 0.98 kg) and body condition were selected and randomly divided into two groups: the control group (CON) and the ICGA group (ICGA). The lambs of CON were fed a basal diet, while the lambs of ICGA were supplemented with 0.1% ICGA based on the basal diet. Lambs rumen fermentation characteristics, microbial diversity and immunity at estrus, pregnancy, and lactation stages were determined and analyzed, respectively. The results showed that the rumen pH in CON increased first and then decreased as lambs grew (p < 0.05). However, it showed the opposite change in ICGA. The content of ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) showed the highest at estrus stage in both groups, but it was significantly higher in ICGA than that in CON (p < 0.05). The Acetic acid/propionic acid (A/P) ratio at estrus stage and the volatile fatty acids (VFAs) at pregnancy stage in ICGA were significantly higher than those of the CON (p < 0.05). The 16S rDNA sequencing analysis showed that the Shannon, Chao 1 and ACE indexes of the ICGA were significantly higher than those of the CON both at estrus and lactation stages (p < 0.05), while they showed higher at the pregnancy stage in CON (p > 0.05). Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that there were significant differences in rumen microorganism structure between CON and ICGA at all physiological stages (p < 0.01). At the phylum level, compared with the CON, Firmicutes relative abundance of three physiological stages decreased (p > 0.05) while Bacteroidota increased (p > 0.05). The relative abundance of Synergistota at estrus stage and Patescibacteria at the lactation stage increased significantly too (p < 0.05). At the genus level, compared with the CON, the relative abundance of Prevotella at three stages showed the highest (p > 0.05), while the relative abundance of Succiniclasticum, unclassified_Selenomonadaceae and Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group showed different abundances at different physiological stages in ICGA. Compared with the CON, the lambs of the ICGA showed higher blood IgG, IgM, and TNF- α contents at three physiological stages and higher IL-6 contents at pregnancy stage (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Adding ICGA could regulate ewes rumen fermentation mode at different physiological stages by increasing rumen NH3-N at estrus, VFAs at pregnancy, and the ratio of A/P at lactation. It optimizes rumen microbial flora of different physiological stages by increasing Bacteroidota relative abundance while reducing Firmicutes relative abundance, maintaining rumen microbial homeostasis at pregnant stage, increasing the number of beneficial bacteria in later lactating and ewes blood immunoglobulins content at three physiological stages.
