Abstract

Uncrewed aerial systems (UASs) are becoming very popular in the domain of water resource mapping and management (WRMM). Being a cheaper and quicker option capable of providing high temporal and spatial resolution data, UAS has become a much sought-after platform for remote sensing. Still, their application in the field is in its early stage. This paper encompasses basic concepts of UAS, different payloads and sensor technologies available, various methodologies for its application in WRMM, different software available, and challenges associated with them, thus presenting a comprehensive review of multiple applications of UAS in different sub-domains of water resources. From cryosphere, rivers and lakes, and coastal areas to sub-surface water, as well as from water quality to wastewater management, the authors have discussed various applications of uncrewed aerial vehicles. At the end of the paper, the authors have identified the issues posing problems in the wider implementation of UAS in WRMM. Also, the future scope of the UAS in WRMM has been discussed.

Abstract

Nuclear mechanotransduction is a growing field with exciting implications for the regulation of gene expression and cellular function. Mechanical signals may be transduced to the nuclear interior biochemically or physically through connections between the cell surface and chromatin. To define mechanical stresses upon the nucleus in physiological settings, we generated transgenic mouse strains that harbour FRET-based tension sensors or control constructs in the outer and inner aspects of the nuclear envelope. We knocked-in a published esprin-2G sensor to measure tensions across the LINC complex and generated a new sensor that links the inner nuclear membrane to chromatin. To mitigate challenges inherent to fluorescence lifetime analysis in vivo, we developed software (FLIMvivo) that markedly improves the fitting of fluorescence decay curves. In the mouse embryo, the sensors responded to cytoskeletal relaxation and stretch applied by micro-aspiration. They reported organ-specific differences and a spatiotemporal tension gradient along the proximodistal axis of the limb bud, raising the possibility that mechanical mechanisms coregulate pattern formation. Abstract

This article presents the design and implementation of a fault tolerant architecture for sensor fusion that tolerates faults on a quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). It aims to tolerate both hardware sensors faults (GPS jamming, IMU lock or freezing, magnetometer sensitivity to high power magnetic fields...) and software faults (faults in the Kalman filter, bad parameters initialization....). The proposed architecture uses data fusion with Kalman filters in order to estimate the states (position and orientation) of the UAV. It includes an analytical redundancy using the dynamic model of the system. The estimations of the defined Kalman filters and the dynamic model feed a weighted average voter, which increases the accuracy of the outputs and the error detection process. The proposed architecture allows multiple recovery solutions to a faulty system and thus increasing its flexibility. The architecture is validated using numerical simulations and experimental flights in real outdoor environment using a quadrotor.

Terrestrial photogrammetry nowadays offers a reasonably cheap, intuitive and effective approach to 3D-modelling. However, the important choice, which sensor and which software to use is not straight forward and needs consideration as the choice will have effects on the resulting 3D point cloud and its derivatives. We compare five different sensors as well as four different state-of-the-art software packages for a single application, the modelling of a vegetated rock face. The five sensors represent different resolutions, sensor sizes and price segments of the cameras. The software packages used are: (1) Agisoft PhotoScan Pro (1.16), (2) Pix4D (2.0.89), (3) a combination of Visual SFM (V0.5.22) and SURE (1.2.0.286), and (4) MicMac (1.0). We took photos of a vegetated rock face from identical positions with all sensors. Then we compared the results of the different software packages regarding the ease of the workflow, visual appeal, similarity and quality of the point cloud. While PhotoScan and Pix4D offer the user-friendliest workflows, they are also “black-box” programmes giving only little insight into their processing. Unsatisfying results may only be changed by modifying settings within a module. The combined workflow of Visual SFM, SURE and CloudCompare is just as simple but requires more user interaction. MicMac turned out to be the most challenging software as it is less user-friendly. However, MicMac offers the most possibilities to influence the processing workflow. The resulting point-clouds of PhotoScan and MicMac are the most appealing.

Abstract

In the last few years, simultaneous localization and mapping became an important topic of research in the robotics community. This article proposes an approach for autonomous navigation of mobile robots in faulty situations. The main objective is to extend the fault tolerance strategy to simultaneous localization and mapping in presence of sensor faults or software faults in the data fusion process. Fault detection and isolation technique is performed based on duplication–comparison method and structured residuals. The proposed fault tolerance approach is based on the extended Kalman filter for simultaneous localization and mapping when an absolute localization sensor is available. The validation of the proposed approach and the extended Kalman filter for simultaneous localization and mapping algorithm is performed from experiments employing an omnidrive mobile robot, equipped with embedded sensors, namely: wheel encoders, gyroscope, two laser rangefinders and external sensor for the absolute position (indoor global positioning system). The obtained results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach where it was found that its fault tolerance performance is based essentially on the selected residuals and the values of the fault detection thresholds to be used for the fault detection and isolation.
