Abstract

The $3 \times 1 \times 1$ m$^3$ demonstrator is a dual phase liquid argon time projection chamber that has recorded cosmic rays events in 2017 at CERN. The light signal in these detectors is crucial to provide precise timing capabilities. The performances of the photon detection system, composed of five PMTs, are discussed. The collected scintillation and electroluminescence light created by passing particles has been studied in various detector conditions. In particular, the scintillation light production and propagation processes have been analyzed and compared to simulations, improving the understanding of some liquid argon properties., Comment: 30 pages, 26 figures

Abstract

A 10 kilo-tonne dual-phase liquid argon TPC is one of the detector options considered for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). The detector technology relies on amplification of the ionisation charge in ultra-pure argon vapour and oers several advantages compared to the traditional single-phase liquid argon TPCs. A 4.2 tonne dual-phase liquid argon TPC prototype, the largest of its kind, with an active volume of 3x1x1 $m^3$ has been constructed and operated at CERN. In this paper we describe in detail the experimental setup and detector components as well as report on the operation experience. We also present the first results on the achieved charge amplification, prompt scintillation and electroluminescence detection, and purity of the liquid argon from analyses of a collected sample of cosmic ray muons.

We report the results of the analyses of the cosmic ray data collected with a 4 tonne (3×1×1 m3) active mass (volume) Liquid Argon Time-Projection Chamber (TPC) operated in a dual-phase mode. We present a detailed study of the TPC's response, its main detector parameters and performance. The results are important for the understanding and further developments of the dual-phase technology, thanks to the verification of key aspects, such as the extraction of electrons from liquid to gas and their amplification through the entire one square metre readout plain, gain stability, purity and charge sharing between readout views. 12. Performance study of a 3×1×1 m3dual phase liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber exposed to cosmic rays

Abstract

We report the results of the analyses of the cosmic ray data collected with a 4 tonne (3×1×1 m3) active mass (volume) Liquid Argon Time-Projection Chamber (TPC) operated in a dual-phase mode. We present a detailed study of the TPC's response, its main detector parameters and performance. The results are important for the understanding and further developments of the dual-phase technology, thanks to the verification of key aspects, such as the extraction of electrons from liquid to gas and their amplification through the entire one square metre readout plain, gain stability, purity and charge sharing between readout views.

Abstract

To deal with the risk of emerging diseases with many unknowns, close and timely collaboration and communication between science experts and policymakers are crucial to developing and implementing an effective science-based intervention strategy. The Expert Meeting, an ad hoc medical advisory body, was established in February 2020 to advise Japan's COVID-19 Response Headquarters. The group played an important role in the policymaking process, promoting timely situation awareness and developing science-based proposals on interventions that were promptly reflected in government actions. However, this expert group may have been overly proactive in taking on the government's role in crisis management. For the next stage of managing the coronavirus disease pandemic and future pandemics, the respective roles of the government and its advisory bodies need to be clearly defined. Abstract

Two series of copolymers were synthesized by emulsion polymerization: poly(styrene‐co‐acrylonitrile) P(S:AN) and P(S:AN‐acrylic acid) P(S:AN‐AA). The monomeric concentrations in both series were: 0:100, 20:80, 40:60, 50:50 (wt%:wt%), and 1 wt% of AA. The copolymers were dissolved in N,N‐dimethylformamide (4–10 wt%) and were electrospun. Polymeric yarns were collected using a blade collector. The synthesized and fabricated materials were characterized by known techniques. Mechanical and electrical properties of polymeric yarns indicated a dependence of monomeric concentration. Elastic modulus increases as acrylonitrile concentration increases (up to 30 MPa). Yarns were submitted to degradation process into saline solution, where the acrylic acid content kept a constant elastic modulus at long times. The electrical current into yarns was higher when the concentration is 50:50 wt%:wt% (1.2 mA). The cytotoxicity results showed a cell viability close to 100% for yarns without AA. A trigger merging module (TRG-MRG) has been developed to detect leading-edges from 256 channels of discriminator-output signals and transmit those serialized hit data to trigger decision module with four optical links. Abstract

A reliable performance of anti-seismic devices when the upper-structure is subjected to strong biaxial seismic excitation is of vital importance to ensure the latter doesn't reach critical behavior. U-shaped steel dampers are hysteretic devices used to dissipate the earthquake-induced energy of base-isolated structures. In the framework of performance-based design, which is gaining more and more recognition, it is of particular importance to assess the performance of base-isolated structures with such dampers under different intensity levels of bidirectional ground motion. To achieve this goal, an analytical model able to simulate the bidirectional displacement response of an isolation system is adopted. Incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) is used to obtain the relation between the earthquake-induced bidirectional damage of U-shaped steel dampers and different intensity levels of the considered records. The performance of the dampers is categorized into 5 levels delimited by 4 limit states for which fragility curves are derived. The results obtained using the bidirectional approach are quantitatively compared to those given by employing an in-plane model (widely used in current design practices in Japan) with the purpose of assessing whether the latter provides unconservative estimates of the performance of the dampers. The main conclusion is that, for large seismic intensities, the safety margin against fracture of the dampers is significantly overestimated when an in-plane model is adopted. Patients were assigned randomly to continued use of β-lactamase inhibitor for either 24 or 72 h after surgery. The primary endpoint was the incidence of SSI, with non-inferiority based on a margin of 9 percentage points and a 90 per cent c.i. The secondary endpoint was the incidence of remote infection. Results A total of 464 patients (24 h prophylaxis, 228; 72 h prophylaxis, 236) were analysed. SSI occurred in 20 patients (8·8 per cent) in the 24-h prophylaxis group and 26 (11·0 per cent) in the 72-h group (absolute difference −2·2 (90 per cent c.i. −6·8 to 2·4) per cent; P < 0·001 for non-inferiority). However, the incidence of remote infection was significantly higher in the 24-h prophylaxis group. Conclusion Antimicrobial prophylaxis for 24 h after total gastrectomy is not inferior to 72 h prophylaxis for prevention of SSI. Abstract

Background: The 3rd English edition of the Japanese classification of the biliary tract cancers (JC) is now available in this journal. The primary aim of this revision is to provide all clinicians and researchers with a common language of cancer staging at an international level. On the other hand, there are several important issues that should be solved for the optimization of the staging system. Methods: Revision concepts and major revision points of the 3rd English edition of the JC were reviewed. Furthermore, comparing with the 7th edition of staging system developed by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) and the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC), distinctive points in the JC was discussed. Results: In this edition of the JC, the same stage groupings as those in the UICC/AJCC staging system were basically adopted. T, N, and M categories were also identical in principle with those in the UICC/AJCC staging system, although slight modifications were proposed as the “Japanese rules”. As distinctive points, perihilar cholangiocarcinomas and ampullary region carcinomas were clearly defined. Intraepithelial tumor was discriminated from invasive carcinoma at ductal resection margins. Classifications of site‐specific surgical margin status remained in this edition. Histological classification was based on that in the former editions of the JC, but adopted some parts of the World Health Organization classification. Conclusions: The JC now share its staging system of the biliary tact carcinomas with the UICC/AJCC staging system. Abstract

The $3 \times 1 \times 1$ m$^3$ demonstrator is a dual phase liquid argon time projection chamber that has recorded cosmic rays events in 2017 at CERN. The light signal in these detectors is crucial to provide precise timing capabilities. The performances of the photon detection system, composed of five PMTs, are discussed. The collected scintillation and electroluminescence light created by passing particles has been studied in various detector conditions. In particular, the scintillation light production and propagation processes have been analyzed and compared to simulations, improving the understanding of some liquid argon properties., Comment: 30 pages, 26 figures

Abstract

The photoproduction of K0 and Λ on the deuteron was measured in order to investigate the γn → K0Λ reaction process near the threshold (Eγ = 0:8-1:1 GeV). K0 and ⋀ events were clearly seen in the π+π+ and the pπ- invariant mass spectra, respectively. The momentum spectra of the γd → K0X and the γd → ΛX reactions were derived. Additionally, the energy dependence of the integral cross section for the Λ production was also obtained. The K0 momentum spectra were in agreement with the previous results within statistical errors. The angular distribution of the γn → K0Λ reaction in the center of mass system was extracted and it had the backward distribution. The total cross section of the γn → K0Λ reaction, which was estimated by subtracting the contribution of K+Λ process from the Λ production on the deuteron, was almost the same as that of the γp → K+Λ. 31. A combined method of Wigner-Ville distribution with a theoretical model for acoustic emission source location in a dispersive media.

Abstract

This paper presents a new Acoustic Emission (AE) source location method in combination with a Wigner-Ville Distribution (WVD) and a theoretical velocity dispersion model in dispersive rock. This method does not require measuring the first arrival time of a signal, and is able to provide reliable and identical Time-of-Arrival-Differences (TOADs) regardless of the frequency components in the obtained signals. The basic idea behind this is that, if at least two dominant frequency components in the output signals can be determined from the WVD analysis of the test results, a full wave dispersion curve of the arriving signal is obtained in accordance with the theoretical wave model, where the time differences between dispersion curves are identical through the entire effective frequency range of the AE transducers. Biot's model was applied as a velocity dispersion model, and the smoothed pseudo WVD was used to reduce the cross-term interference. It was found that the frequency-dependent arrival time traveling with the group velocity was easily determined with the help of the theoretical model, and the source location results based on the WVD algorithm and theoretical model agree better with the true locations than those from the Time-of-First-Arrival Differences (TOFADs). Abstract

Objective: The current study aimed to compare the therapeutic outcomes of surgery with those of chemoradiation for patients with advanced oropharyngeal cancer (OPC). Methods: The data for 523 patients with previously untreated OPC were obtained from 12 institutions belonging to the Head and Neck Cancer Study Group in the Japan Clinical Oncology Group from April 2005 to March 2007. In this study, we matched a group of patients who underwent surgery with a second group treated with chemoradiation according to age, gender, subsite, and T and N classification, and analyzed the overall survival, progression-free survival, local control and swallowing function. Results: The final matched-pair analysis included 186 patients. The 5-year overall survival, progression-free survival and local control rates were 69.8 and 71.4% (p = 0.762), 51.0 and 54.4% (p = 0.531), and 75.2 and 80.3% (p = 0.399), respectively, in patients treated with surgery and those treated with chemoradiation. Swallowing function in patients treated with chemoradiation was significantly better than that in patients treated with surgery (p = 0.015). Conclusion: Although this study was not randomized, this matched-pair analysis of patients treated with surgery or chemoradiation showed that chemoradiation is as effective as surgery in the treatment of OPC. Abstract

The adsorption behavior of albumin (BSA) and lysozyme (LSZ) on rod-shaped and plate-shaped hydroxyapatite (HA) was investigated to evaluate the influence of crystal orientation and morphology on the selective protein adsorption of HA. The rod-shaped HA was prepared by hydrothermal treatment from β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) in H3PO4 solution (pH 2.0 and 4.0 for HA-pH 2.0 and HA-pH 4.0). The plate-shaped HA was synthesized by hydrolysis of CaHPO4-2H2O (DCPD) in NaOH solution at 40°C and 80°C (HA-40°C and HA-80°C). The synthesized HA was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). HA-pH 2.0 and HA-pH 4.0 produced rod-shaped crystals that were highly oriented to the a-face plane, whereas HA-40°C and HA-80°C showed a plate-like shape and a c-face preferred orientation. The peak intensity ratio I(300)/I(002) (a/c intensity ratio) from the XRD patterns increased in the following order: HA-80°C, HA-40°C, HA-pH 2.0 and HA-pH 4.0. It also increased as the Ca/P ratio decreased. The amount of adsorbed BSA increased in the following order: HA-pH 4.0, HA-pH 2.0, HA-40°C and HA-80°C. The amount of adsorbed LSZ on HA increased in the following order - HA-pH 2.0, HA-pH 4.0, HA-40°C and HA-80°C - with a corresponding decrease in the a/c intensity ratio. The BSA/LSA adsorption ratio increased with the a/c intensity ratio in the range of 3.3-8.9, and the BSA and LSZ were selectively adsorbed on HA, depending on the crystal shape. Abstract

There is a growing quest for the construction of functional supramolecular architectures to efficiently translate (bio)chemical events into easily measurable signals. This interest originates from its inherent scientific relevance as well as from their potential applications in the ever-flourishing areas of bioelectronics and biosensing. Herein, we describe the immobilization of glycoproteins onto electrode surfaces based on recognition-mediated supramolecular processes. Quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D), surface plasmon resonance (SPR) spectroscopy, and electrochemical (EC) measurements were used to characterize the structural and functional features of these bio-supramolecular systems. Carbohydrate–lectin interactions were successfully used to build up stable assemblies of glucose oxidase (GOx) layers mediated by the recognition properties of concanavalin A supramolecular architectures. The catalytic response of GOx indicates that the whole population of enzymes incorporated in the supramolecular architecture is fully active. Even though lectin–carbohydrate interactions are rather weak, the multivalency effects prevailing in the supramolecular assembly confer remarkable stability to the interfacial architecture, thus preventing the release of the enzyme from the surface even with high glucose (ligand) concentrations. This approach represents a simple and straightforward route to locally address functional glycoproteins at interfaces. In this context, we consider that the versatility of a supramolecular assembly using biological interactions could open up new ways of envisioning or to generate new ideas for the future development of highly efficient bioelectronic platforms. Abstract

Background and Purpose: The number of chronic-stage ischemic stroke patients in Japan continues to increase, because of decreasing mortality. This study was designed to ascertain health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in ischemic stroke patients and to analyze in detail factors affecting HRQOL. Methods: 2,069 outpatients (1,226 males, 843 females; mean age: 71 years; median duration after onset: 20.5 months) with chronic-stage ischemic stroke visiting 150 institutions in Japan were enrolled. HRQOL was evaluated using the second version of the patient self-administered Medical Outcome Study 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36v2) questionnaire. Results: All 8 domain scores and the physical component summary (PCS) score of SF-36v2 in stroke patients were significantly lower than those of Japanese national norms (JNN). The PCS score (36.6 ± 16.1) and mental component summary (MCS) score (50.0 ± 10.2) were lower than those of age-matched JNN (p < 0.001). Age, modified Rankin Scale (mRS), duration after onset and Japan Stroke Scale Depression score (JSS-D) were significantly correlated with PCS, as were role limitation because of physical problem, bodily pain, vitality and role limitation because of emotional problem scores; duration after onset and JSS-D were significantly correlated with MCS. Negative factors for PCS were older age, higher mRS, presence of subjective symptoms, neurological signs, rehabilitation and concomitant antidepressants. Negative factors for MCS were presence of subjective symptoms, psychiatric signs and concomitant antidepressants. Conclusions: HRQOL scores in ischemic stroke patients (chronic stage) are significantly correlated with not only age, mRS, duration after onset and JSS-D, but also presence of subjective symptoms and neurological/psychiatric signs, which could be targets for treatment. Background: It is unclear whether the association between alcohol consumption and risk of cardiovascular disease is affected by social support. Methods: The prospective data for 19,356 men aged 40 to 69 years who participated in the Japan Public Health Center-Based Prospective Study. Alcohol consumption was classified into 7 categories: never, past, occasional, 1 to 149, 150 to 299, 300 to 449, or ≥450 g ethanol/wk. Associations between alcohol consumption and risk of cardiovascular disease were stratified by the median level of social support score, which was measured in emotional support score of this cohort study. Results: During an average follow-up of 9.9 years, 629 total strokes and 207 coronary heart diseases were documented. Light-to-moderate alcohol consumption was associated with reduced risks of coronary heart disease and total cardiovascular disease, while heavy alcohol consumption was associated with increased risk of total stroke, in particular hemorrhagic stroke. When stratified by social support score, the multivariable hazard ratios of total cardiovascular disease associated with light-to-moderate alcohol consumption (1 to 299 g/wk) were 0.99 (0.72 to 1.37) in the low social support group and 0.56 (0.44 to 0.70) in the high social support group ( p for interaction = 0.002), while the multivariable hazard ratios of hemorrhagic stroke associated with heavy alcohol consumption (≥300 g/wk) were 2.09 (1.03 to 4.27) in the low social support group and 1.25 (0.72 to 2.15) in the high social support group ( p for interaction = 0.44). There was no interaction between alcohol consumption and social support in relation to risk of coronary heart disease. Abstract

A large solid angle γ-ray detector system, FOREST, has been constructed at LNS-Sendai to study the π0 and η photo-production reactions. The FOREST detector consists of three electro-magnetic calorimeters: pure CsI crystals, Lead/SciFi blocks and Lead Glass Cherenkov counters. It covers about 90% of the total solid angle. A new data acquisition system for the FOREST detector has been developed to handle high rate trigger events with a high efficiency. To investigate performances of FOREST and the DAQ system, a test experiment has been conducted. The π0 and η mesons are clearly observed. A DAQ efficiency of 76% has been obtained at a 2 kHz trigger request. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Abstract Objectives  We examined the association of potential risk factors with the incidence of biliary tract cancer in a large-scale population-based cohort study. Particular focus was placed on a history of cholelithiasis, body mass index (BMI), and their effect modification, and whether risk differs by cancer subsite, namely by gallbladder cancer and extrahepatic bile duct cancer. Design  We investigated 101,868 middle-aged and older Japanese subjects (48,681 men and 53,187 women) during 1,200,386 person-years of follow-up. Results  A total of 235 cases of biliary tract cancer (93 gallbladder cancer and 142 extrahepatic bile duct cancer) were newly diagnosed. Cholelithiasis was associated with an increased risk of biliary tract cancer [HR, 2.53; 95% CI, 1.56–4.12]. This association was similarly observed for both gallbladder [HR, 3.01; 95% CI, 1.56–6.19] and extrahepatic bile duct cancer [HR, 2.12; 95% CI, 1.08–4.18]. Body mass index was associated with an increased risk of extrahepatic bile duct cancer (P for trend = 0.03) and this effect was not modified by a history of cholelithiasis. Conclusions  Cholelithiasis was confirmed to be associated with the risk of biliary tract cancer, both gallbladder and extrahepatic bile duct cancer. Obesity may increase the risk of extrahepatic bile duct cancer only, independent of cholelithiasis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
