Abstract

Measuring the spin structure of protons and neutrons tests our understanding of how they arise from quarks and gluons, the fundamental building blocks of nuclear matter. At long distances the coupling constant of the strong interaction becomes large, requiring non-perturbative methods to calculate quantum chromodynamics processes, such as lattice gauge theory or effective field theories. Here we report proton spin structure measurements from scattering a polarized electron beam off polarized protons. The spin-dependent cross-sections were measured at large distances, corresponding to the region of low momentum transfer squared between 0.012 and 1.0 GeV$^2$. This kinematic range provides unique tests of chiral effective field theory predictions. Our results show that a complete description of the nucleon spin remains elusive, and call for further theoretical works, e.g. in lattice quantum chromodynamics. Finally, our data extrapolated to the photon point agree with the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule, a fundamental prediction of quantum field theory that relates the anomalous magnetic moment of the proton to its integrated spin-dependent cross-sections., Comment: Published version. 10 pages, 5 figures. 20 pages of supplementary material (data tables and a figure)

Abstract

First measurements of double-polarization observables in $\omega$ photoproduction off the proton are presented using transverse target polarization and data from the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) FROST experiment at Jefferson Lab. The beam-target asymmetry $F$ has been measured using circularly polarized, tagged photons in the energy range 1200 - 2700 MeV, and the beam-target asymmetries $H$ and $P$ have been measured using linearly polarized tagged photons in the energy range 1200 - 2000 MeV. These measurements significantly increase the database on polarization observables. The results are included in two partial-wave analyses and reveal significant contributions from several nucleon ($N^\ast$) resonances. In particular, contributions from new $N^\ast$ resonances listed in the Review of Particle Properties are observed, which aid in reaching the goal of mapping out the nucleon resonance spectrum., Comment: Two authors added, figures updated

Abstract

Results are presented for the first measurement of the double-polarization helicity asymmetry E for the $\eta$ photoproduction reaction $\gamma p \rightarrow \eta p$. Data were obtained using the FROzen Spin Target (FROST) with the CLAS spectrometer in Hall B at Jefferson Lab, covering a range of center-of-mass energy W from threshold to 2.15 GeV and a large range in center-of-mass polar angle. As an initial application of these data, the results have been incorporated into the J\"ulich model to examine the case for the existence of a narrow $N^*$ resonance between 1.66 and 1.70 GeV. The addition of these data to the world database results in marked changes in the predictions for the E observable using that model. Further comparison with several theoretical approaches indicates these data will significantly enhance our understanding of nucleon resonances.

Abstract

First results from the longitudinally polarized frozen-spin target (FROST) program are reported. The double-polarization observable E, for the reaction $\vec \gamma \vec p \to \pi^+n$, has been measured using a circularly polarized tagged-photon beam, with energies from 0.35 to 2.37 GeV. The final-state pions were detected with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer in Hall B at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. These polarization data agree fairly well with previous partial-wave analyses at low photon energies. Over much of the covered energy range, however, significant deviations are observed, particularly in the high-energy region where high-L multipoles contribute. The data have been included in new multipole analyses resulting in updated nucleon resonance parameters. We report updated fits from the Bonn-Gatchina, J\"ulich, and SAID groups., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

A frozen spin polarized target, constructed at Jefferson Lab for use inside a large acceptance spectrometer, is described. The target has been utilized for photoproduction measurements with polarized tagged photons of both longitudinal and circular polarization. Protons in TEMPO-doped butanol were dynamically polarized to approximately 90% outside the spectrometer at 5 T and 200--300 mK. Photoproduction data were acquired with the target inside the spectrometer at a frozen-spin temperature of approximately 30 mK with the polarization maintained by a thin, superconducting coil installed inside the target cryostat. A 0.56 T solenoid was used for longitudinal target polarization and a 0.50 T dipole for transverse polarization. Spin-lattice relaxation times as high as 4000 hours were observed. Abstract

Measurements of polarized neutron--polarized $^3$He scattering are reported. The target consisted of cryogenically-polarized solid $^3$He, thickness 0.04 atom/b and polarization 40%. The longitudinal and transverse total cross-section differences $\Delta\sigma_L$ and $\Delta\sigma_T$ were measured for incident neutron energies 2-8 MeV. The results are compared to phase-shift predictions based on four different analyses of n-$^3$He scattering. The best agreement is obtained with a recent R-matrix analysis of A=4 scattering and reaction data, lending strong suport to the $^4$He level scheme obtained in that analysis., Comment: 19 pages RevTeX style, 5 postscript figures, excepted for publication in the Aug96 issue of Phys. Abstract

A test of parity-conserving, time-reversal non-invariance (PC TRNI) has been performed in 5.9 MeV polarized neutron transmission through nuclear spin aligned holmium. The experiment searches for the T-violating five-fold correlation via a double modulation technique - flipping the neutron spin while rotating the alignment axis of the holmium. Relative cross sections for spin-up and spin-down neutrons are found to be equal to within $1.2 \times 10^{-5}$ (80\% confidence). Abstract

First measurements of double-polarization observables in $\omega$ photoproduction off the proton are presented using transverse target polarization and data from the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) FROST experiment at Jefferson Lab. The beam-target asymmetry $F$ has been measured using circularly polarized, tagged photons in the energy range 1200 - 2700 MeV, and the beam-target asymmetries $H$ and $P$ have been measured using linearly polarized tagged photons in the energy range 1200 - 2000 MeV. These measurements significantly increase the database on polarization observables. The results are included in two partial-wave analyses and reveal significant contributions from several nucleon ($N^\ast$) resonances. In particular, contributions from new $N^\ast$ resonances listed in the Review of Particle Properties are observed, which aid in reaching the goal of mapping out the nucleon resonance spectrum., Comment: Two authors added, figures updated

The final-state pions were detected with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer in Hall B at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. These polarization data agree fairly well with previous partial-wave analyses at low photon energies. Over much of the covered energy range, however, significant deviations are observed, particularly in the high-energy region where high-L multipoles contribute. The data have been included in new multipole analyses resulting in updated nucleon resonance parameters. We report updated fits from the Bonn-Gatchina, J\"ulich, and SAID groups.

Our final results of measurements at SLAC of the spin dependent asymmetry in the deep inelastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons by longitudinally polarized protons are presented. Data were obtained at a scattering angle of 10° and for incident energies of 16.2 and 22.7 GeV, which cover the kinematic range 0.18

39. Effect of T-Invariance Violation in Scattering of Polarized 3He Nuclei on Tensor-Polarized Deuterons.

Abstract

In the interaction of a transversely polarized nuclear beam with a tensor-polarized deuteron target, a nonzero value of the component of the total cross section corresponding to this combination of polarizations is an unambiguous signal of -invariance violation while -parity is preserved. The method developed earlier for calculating this component of the total cross section for scattering based on the Glauber theory has been generalized by us to the case of 3He scattering, and its energy dependence in the range of beam energies 0.1–1 GeV/nucleon has been calculated. It is found that in 3He collisions, in contrast to scattering, the contribution of only one type of -violating nucleon-nucleon forces dominates, which is essential for extraction of the unknown constant of this interaction from the corresponding data. Abstract

The structural parameters of the (Σ//C)-YbF, (A//C)-YbF2, (A//D)-YbF, (Ag//D)-YbFYb, (Ag//C)-FYbFYbF, (A//C)-FYbFYbF, (A//C)-YbFYbF, (B//D)-FYbFYbF, (A′//C)-FYbFYbF, and (B//С)-FYbFCeF molecules have been determined. Disproportionation of ytterbium monofluoride (2YbF → YbF + Yb + 0.46 eV) is less exothermic than dimerization (2YbF → YbFYb + 2.10 eV). The bond energy of the ytterbium difluoride molecules in the trans dimer (2.93 eV) exceeds those in the cis dimer (2.86 eV) and the coaxial dimer (1.66 eV). Ytterbium trifluoride dimerizes exothermically (2.95 eV) without spin pairing. The dipole and quadrupole moments of the molecules as well as the charges and spin populations of the atoms and the valence electron configurations of the lanthanides have been calculated. It is shown that the neutron-proton (proton-proton) phase shifts cannot be determined to less than % ( %) uncertainty at low energies ( MeV), even if high-accuracy nucleon-nucleon data were to become available for currently inaccessible observables. For a more accurate determination, appropriate theoretical constraints have to be invoked, but their accuracy can be judged only from the comparison of rigorous three-nucleon continuum calculations with particular three-nucleon observables. 48. Estrogenic regulation of diamine oxidase activity in rat uterus.

Abstract

Diamine oxidase activity was studied in female rat tissues during the estrous cycle and after 17 β-estradiol administration. During the estrous cycle, uterine and hepatic enzyme activities were highest at proestrus and lowest at estrus, when estrogen plasma levels are known to be respectively high and low. The administration of 17 β-estradiol to ovariectomized rats caused a rapid and prolonged increase in enzyme activity in uterus and only a transient, increase in the liver. Such increases were prevented by cycloheximide and by actinomycin D administration. No changes were observed in renal enzyme activity during estrus or after hormone treatment. Our data suggest that estrogens regulate, diamine oxidase activity in rat uterus by a mechanism of enzyme induction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
