Abstract

We investigate the inverse spin Hall voltage of a 10nm thin Pt strip deposited on the magnetic insulators Y3Fe5O12 (YIG) and NiFe2O4 (NFO) with a temperature gradient in the film plane. We observe characteristics typical of the spin Seebeck effect, although we do not observe a change of sign of the voltage at the Pt strip when it is moved from hot to cold side, which is believed to be the most striking feature of the transverse spin Seebeck effect. Therefore, we relate the observed voltages to the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect generated by a parasitic out-of-plane temperature gradient, which can be simulated by contact tips of different material and heat conductivities and by tip heating. Abstract

We investigated the voltages obtained in a thin Pt strip on a Permalloy film which was subject to in-plane temperature gradients and magnetic fields. The voltages detected by thin W-tips or bond wires showed a purely symmetric effect with respect to the external magnetic field which can be fully explained by the planar Nernst effect (PNE). To verify the influence of the contacts measurements in vacuum and atmosphere were compared and gave similar results. We explain that a slightly in-plane tilted temperature gradient only shifts the field direction dependence but does not cancel out the observed effects. Additionally, the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) could be induced by using thick Au-tips which generated a heat current perpendicular to the sample plane. The effect can be manipulated by varying the temperature of the Au-tips. Abstract

PURPOSE To report clinical and treatment characteristics, remission and failure patterns, and risk factors for local failure (LF) from the EMBRACE-I study. MATERIALS AND METHODS EMBRACE-I was a prospective, observational, multicenter cohort study on magnetic resonance imaging–based image-guided adaptive brachytherapy (MR-IGABT) in locally advanced cervical cancer. Treatment consisted of external beam radiotherapy, concurrent chemotherapy, and MR-IGABT. LF was defined as progressive or recurrent disease in the cervix, uterus, parametria, pelvic wall, or vagina. Competing risk analysis was used to estimate local tumor control (LC) and Cox proportional regression models for multivariable analysis and dose-response analysis. RESULTS One thousand three hundred eighteen patients with a median follow-up of 52 months were available for this analysis. Eighty-one patients had persistent disease 3 months after end of treatment. Of those, 60 patients achieved LC at 6-9 months without further treatment, whereas 21 patients had progressive disease. In addition, 77 patients developed a local recurrence after complete remission comprising a total number of 98 LFs. LFs were located inside the MR-IGABT target volumes in 90% of patients with LF. In multivariable analysis, histology, minimal dose to 90% of high-risk clinical target volume (CTVHR), maximum tumor dimension, CTVHR > 45 cm3, overall treatment time, tumor necrosis on magnetic resonance imaging at diagnosis, uterine corpus infiltration at diagnosis and at MR-IGABT, and mesorectal infiltration at MR-IGABT had significant impact on LF. Dose-response analysis showed that a minimal dose to 90% of 85 Gy to the CTVHR led to 95% (95% CI, 94 to 97) LC 3 years postintervention for squamous cell in comparison to 86% (95% CI, 81 to 90) for adeno/adenosquamous carcinoma histology. CONCLUSION The present study demonstrates the safety and validity of the GYN GEC-ESTRO/ICRU-89 target concept and provides large-scale evidence for dose prescription and new risk factors for LF in MR-IGABT in locally advanced cervical cancer.

24. Investigations on High-Power LEDs and Solder Interconnects in Automotive Application: Part II—Reliability

Abstract

Thermo-mechanical reliability is one major challenge in solid-state lighting for automotive applications. Mismatches in the coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) between high-power LED packages and substrates paired with temperature changes induce mechanical stress. This leads to thermal degradation by crack formation in the solder interconnect and/or delamination in the substrate, which in turn increases junction temperature, thus decreasing light output and reducing the lifetime. A reliability study with a total of 1,800 samples - segmented in nine LED types and five solder pastes - is performed to investigate degradation and understand the influence of solder material and LED package design. The results are presented in two papers. Initial characterization of the LEDs was handled in the first paper. This second paper focuses on degradation and lifetime. Overall, more than 40,000 transient thermal analysis (TTA) and 9,000 scanning acoustic microscopy (SAM) measurements were taken to evaluate degradation during accelerated aging of 1,500 thermal shock cycles. Six different failure modes were observed, which were distinguishable by only using TTA data. For the reliability evaluation, crack ratio was determined by SAM images while thermal degradation as well as mean lifetime were determined using TTA data. Multiple observations were made within this study. First: SAM and TTA data correlated very well; Second: Higher silver content and additives in the solder paste reduce crack growth and increases lifetime; Third: Thick film ceramic LEDs reach significant longer lifetimes than thin film ceramic LEDs, and copper lead-frame LEDs reached by far the longest lifetimes; Fourth: A pad design with a greater pad size, smaller gaps and balanced size ratio between electrical and thermal pad is advantageous; Fifth: Voiding (below 10%) has no significant influence on the reliability.

32. Neural network-assisted automated image registration for MRI-guided adaptive brachytherapy in cervical cancer.

Abstract

In image-guided adaptive brachytherapy (IGABT) a quantitative evaluation of the dosimetric changes between fractions due to anatomical variations, can be implemented via rigid registration of images from subsequent fractions based on the applicator as a reference structure. With available treatment planning systems (TPS), this is a manual and time-consuming process. The aim of this retrospective study was to automate this process. A neural network (NN) was trained to predict the applicator structure from MR images. The resulting segmentation was used to automatically register MR-volumes. DICOM images and plans of 56 patients treated for cervical cancer with high dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy were used in the study. A 2D and a 3D NN were trained to segment applicator structures on clinical T2-weighted MRI datasets. Different rigid registration algorithms were investigated and compared. To evaluate a fully automatic registration workflow, the NN-predicted applicator segmentations (AS) were used for rigid image registration with the best performing algorithm. The DICE coefficient and mean distance error between dwell positions (MDE) were used to evaluate segmentation and registration performance. The mean DICE coefficient for the predicted AS was 0.70 ± 0.07 and 0.58 ± 0.04 for the 3D NN and 2D NN, respectively. Registration algorithms achieved MDE errors from 8.1 ± 3.7 mm (worst) to 0.7 ± 0.5 mm (best), using ground-truth AS. Using the predicted AS from the 3D NN together with the best registration algorithm, an MDE of 2.7 ± 1.4 mm was achieved. Using a combination of deep learning models and state of the art image registration techniques has been demonstrated to be a promising solution for automatic image registration in IGABT. In combination with auto-contouring of organs at risk, the auto-registration workflow from this study could become part of an online-dosimetric interfraction evaluation workflow in the future. Abstract

Abstract Background To date, there is no consensus on the utility of screening procedures for the early detection of endometrial cancer. The value of transvaginal ultrasound for screening of asymptomatic endometrial cancer has been discussed controversially. This study was conducted to evaluate whether asymptomatic patients with endometrial cancer have a better prognosis than symptomatic patients with endometrial cancer diagnosed after postmenopausal bleeding. Methods In the present multi-center study, the effect of the presence of postmenopausal bleeding on prognosis was evaluated retrospectively in 605 patients with endometrial cancer using patients' files. 543 patients (133 patients were asymptomatic, 410 patients were symptomatic) with endometrioid endometrial cancer were enrolled in all further analysis. Student's t-test, Cox regression analysis and Kaplan-Meier analysis were used were appropriate. Results Presence/absence of a postmenopausal bleeding was not associated with tumor stage (p = 0.2) and age at diagnosis (p = 0.5). Asymptomatic patients with endometrial cancer had a significantly higher rate of well and moderate-differentiated tumors compared to symptomatic patients (p = 0.008). In univariable and multivariable survival analysis, tumor stage, tumor grade, and patients' age at diagnosis, but not presence/absence of a postmenopausal bleeding, were associated with disease free and overall survival. Conclusion Asymptomatic patients with endometrial cancer have a higher rate of well differentiated tumors compared to patients with a postmenopausal bleeding prior to diagnosis. The prognosis of both groups of patients was similar.

Abstract

The last 2 decades have witnessed the development and broad adoption of image-guided adaptive brachytherapy (IGABT) combined with radiochemotherapy in patients with locally advanced cervical cancer. A variety of brachytherapy techniques and dose/fractionation schedules have been applied, and until recently, there was no strong evidence available for preferring one approach to another. However, large volumes of data have now provided high level clinical evidence for dose-effect relations for both disease and morbidity endpoints. It is therefore now possible to apply evidence based dose planning aims and dose prescription protocols in IGABT for locally advanced cervical cancer. This review gives an overview of targets/organs-at-risk and disease/morbidity endpoints which are relevant in the context of treatment planning and dose prescription in IGABT. The dosimetric and clinical evidence is summarized to support the implementation of dose prescription protocols which include hard and soft constraints for targets and organs at risk. 45. Bio-Hydrogen Production in Microbial Electrolysis Cells (MECs)

Abstract

Die Masterarbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Entwicklung und Versuchsdurchführung von Mikrobiellen Elektrolysezellen (MEC) zur biologischen Wasserstoffgewinnung. Dazu wurden die MEC-Versuchsläufe in verschiedenen Systemausführungen betrieben. Die verwendeten Konfigurationen wurden hinsichtlich ihrer Fähigkeit, biologischen Wasserstoff herzustellen evaluiert. In diesem Zusammenhang wurden mehrere Nährmedien, der Methaninhibitor 2-Brom-Ethansulfonate, mehrere Spannungs- bzw. Temperaturwerte, unterschiedliche Prozessdauer und eine neue Methode für die Erfassung und Analyse des produzierten Gases untersucht. Versuche, in denen höhere Pufferkapazitäten im Nährmedium verwendet wurden, zeigten höhere Anteile an produziertem Wasserstoff als jene mit niederen Pufferkonzentrationen. Die Ergebnisse deuten darauf hin, dass der Wahl des Nährmediums und dessen Art und Menge an Komponenten eine überaus entscheidende Bedeutung für die Gaszusammensetzung zukommt und maßgebend zu der Leistung einer MEC beitragen kann. Außerdem stellte sich ein neu entwickeltes Gassammelsystem als gut geeignet heraus, um gasdichte Bedingungen zu schaffen, da kein Sauerstoffeintrag ins System über einen Zeitraum von 26 Tagen festgestellt werden konnte.*****In the course of the project work several microbial electrolysis cell configurations were designed and evaluated for their ability to produce bio-hydrogen. The trials included the use of several media, the methane inhibitor 2-bromoethanesulfonate, the application of different voltages and temperatures, respectively, different process time and a novel method for the measurement and analysis of the produced gas in the reactors. Higher amounts of hydrogen were detected in trials that were operated with high buffer capacities whereas less hydrogen production was present in trials where buffer concentrations were lower. 46. Assessment of a Highly Curated Somatic Oncology Database to Aid in the Interpretation of Clinically Important Variants in Next-Generation Sequencing Results

Abstract

This study evaluated the accuracy of NAVIFY Mutation Profiler, a cloud-based CE-IVD software that aids in interpreting clinically relevant variants detected in somatic oncology next-generation sequencing tests. This tool reports tiered classifications based on different levels of clinical evidence from a highly curated, regularly updated database derived from medical guidelines, drug approvals, and peer-reviewed literature. A retrospective analysis was performed on next-generation sequencing results from 37 lung cancer cases treated with chemotherapy (n = 10), EGFRtyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) (n = 5), or ALKTKI (n = 22). Several aspects were assessed, including accuracy of interpretation compared with manual curation, validity of curation content updates over time, and agreement with public databases. For chemotherapy cases with no targetable biomarkers, NAVIFY Mutation Profiler did not identify any targeted therapies. In EGFRand ALKTKI cases, the software associated appropriate targeted therapies and accurately interpreted variant combinations containing drug-resistance variants. Of the nine unique ALKmutations conferring resistance to crizotinib, NAVIFY Mutation Profiler provided correct annotation for all mutations, whereas OncoKB and Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer indicated crizotinib resistance for eight of nine mutations. For 145 variants analyzed, NAVIFY Mutation Profiler and OncoKB showed substantial agreement (Cohen κ = 0.62) for classifying actionable mutations. Furthermore, NAVIFY Mutation Profiler presented accurate targeted therapies across different regions and remained up-to-date with evolving regional approvals and medical guidelines.
