Objective Palaeomagnetic methods can be used to quantitatively constrain the Early Palaeozoic palaeo-position of the North China Block (NCB), which provides a crucial scientific basis for researching the evolution of the Proto-Tethyan Orogeny and the affinity of the NCB for Gondwana. However, the NCB has undergone considerable tectonic activity since the Early Palaeozoic, and the Ordos Basin in the western part of the NCB is rich in hydrocarbon resources. Late tectonic activity and the migration of hydrocarbon resources may have caused remagnetization of Early Palaeozoic strata. Methods Thus, in this paper, to determine the main magnetic minerals in various rocks and their ability to record the primary remanent magnetization, we carry out a series of detailed petrography, rock magnetism and stepwise demagnetization experiments on the limestone and tuff samples of the Upper Ordovician Zhaolaoyu Formation in the Fuping area of the southern Ordos Basin, including optical microscope identification, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), saturated isothermal remanent magnetization (SIRM) acquisition curve, three-axis isothermal thermal demagnetization test, κ-T curve test, hysteresis loop experiment, first-order reversal curve (FORC), and thermal demagnetization and hybrid (TD+AF) demagnetization. Results The results indicate that the main magnetic minerals in the limestone and tuff samples are magnetite, pyrrhotite and/or greigite, and some samples also contain a tiny quantity of haematite with impurities and goethite. Mineral particles possess single domains (SDs) as well as multiple domains (MDs) within their magnetic domains. Combining petrographic and demagnetization data, this paper suggests that the main magnetic minerals in the samples are likely secondary minerals associated with later fluid alteration (maturation and migration of organic matter). Conclusion The remanent magnetic signals conveyed by these rocks cannot be directly used to constrain the Early Palaeozoic palaeoposition of the NCB but may be used to constrain hydrocarbon migration and accumulation in the Lower Palaeozoic strata of the southern Ordos Basin.

Understanding the evolution of magma storage conditions on volcanoes which have had more than one caldera-forming eruption (CFE) is important to know about past and present conditions, as a key to forecast future potential hazards. Krakatau volcano is characterized by cyclic phases of growth and destruction of the edifice. A volcanostratigraphic study identified three eruptive periods: Old Krakatau, Young Krakatau, and Anak Krakatau. The Old and Young Krakatau periods ended with the first and second CFE respectively. Due to its permanent activity and edifice evolution, Krakatau poses a high risk on the surrounding inhabited islands. In this study, we combined geochemistry, rock magnetic, and petrology to infer the evolution of magma storage conditions from Old to Anak Krakatau periods. This study is the first to report on the chemical and rock magnetic characteristics, as well as storage system conditions of Old Krakatau and its relation to the ongoing evolution of Krakatau. Our data show that: 1) Old and Young Krakatau magma storage regions are shallow (within the upper 3 km), contain more differentiated magmas, from which the Old Krakatau magmas may be less oxidized and had lower temperatures than Young Krakatau; 2) Anak Krakatau magma storage is deeper (up to 26 km), less differentiated, and erupted hotter but more reduced compared to Old and Young Krakatau. The Old and Young Krakatau lavas were the products of pre-CFE and their chemical characteristics are included at maturation phase, whereas the Young Krakatau pumice samples were the product of the second CFE. Lastly, the post-second CFE activity of AK is currently in an incubation phase and represented by mafic products of frequent and small eruptions. Knowing that the volcano has experienced maturation and CFE phases in the past, the current AK may evolve to those phases in the future.

Additionally, if we have a clear understanding of the SV state, can we account for the true cooling rate dependence of grain assemblies, and also find a physical link between magnetic coercivity and blocking temperature.We present a framework of tools for paleomagnetists to interpret measurements in the light of advances in numerical modelling and the increase in speed of modern computers. The Qaidam Block, located at the northern Qinghai–Tibet Plateau, is a pivotal area in unraveling the closure time of the Kunlun Ocean basin which might have recorded the transformation process between the Proto-Tethys and Paleo-Tethys Ocean basins. However, the late Triassic position of the Qaidam Block remains enigmatic, largely due to the scarcity of paleomagnetic data essential for quantitatively determining its paleolatitude. The widespread presence of the Elashan formation, particularly along the southern periphery of the Qaidam block, presents good material for conducting paleomagnetic work. Nevertheless, the primary magnetic carriers preserved within the Elashan formation might be influenced by multiple tectonic thermal events, particularly those associated with collisions between southern blocks and the Qaidam Block. Here we present rock magnetism and magnetic fabrics studies to identify the content and composition of magnetic minerals within the Elashan formation. The rock magnetic and petrologic results show that the magnetic carriers in the samples from the Elashan formation are dominated by magnetite with a small amount of goethite, pyrrhotite, and hematite. The results of Anisotropy in Magnetic Susceptibility indicate that the south of the Longwalangku section might not be obviously influenced by the tectonic events. Our results also provided guidance for future paleomagnetic research, emphasizing the importance of conducting further sampling away from adjacent faults, particularly in the southern Longwalangku area. The growth of the southern piedmont of the Himalayan boundary and its depositional setting has changed since uplift of the Himalaya due to continental Indian-Eurasian collision, which has resulted in variation in magnetic minerals in marine- and terrestrial-facies sediments. In this paper, we utilize rock magnetism data from the late Cretaceous to middle Eocene strata, including the Amile and Bhainskati formations from the Lesser Himalaya (western Nepal), to understand the mechanism controlling magnetic susceptibility (χ). The active tectonics strongly influenced saturation isothermal remanent magnetization (SIRM), HIRM, and hysteresis loops, forming both low-coercivity minerals in sediments with low χ from the terrestrial facies (zones I, IIIA, and V) and high-coercivity minerals in the sediments with high χ from the marine facies (zones II, IIIB and IV). Thermomagnetic κ-T curves and frequency-dependent χ (χfd%) values show that sediments with low χ and high χ carry magnetite with coarse non-superparamagnetic (SP) grains and hematite with SP grains, respectively. Comparing the χ data with the lithologic, sedimentary environments, geomorphic features, and sea level data, we propose that low χ values were mainly produced by an increase in terrigenous detrital influx during the regression period of the Tethys Sea, while high χ values formed in marine sediments, which prompted the appearance of ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic minerals during the transgression of the Tethys Sea.

New archaeointensity results from the Indian archaeological excavation at the historical Harappa Rakhigarhi site, India, dating from the third millennium BC, are reported. Fifteen samples from nine potsherd fragments were collected and subjected to the IZZI Thellier palaeointensity method. Detailed rock magnetic measurements were performed on representative potsherds. Rock magnetic properties indicate that magnetite is the dominant carrier of remanent magnetization. Archaeointensity values range from 23.65 ± 1.23 µT to 41.22 ± 1.82 µT (mean 32.64 ± 0.81 µT), while corresponding virtual axial dipole movements range from 5.06 to 10.60 x 1022 Am² (mean 8.11 x 1022 Am²). Abstract Sedimentary rocks of the Itararé Group, deposited during the Late Paleozoic Ice Age in the Paraná Basin of South America, were collected throughout the state of São Paulo, Brazil, for an anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) and rock‐magnetic study. A recent paleomagnetic study conducted on the same samples had determined that these rocks were largely remagnetized during the Cretaceous; however, rock‐magnetic experiments demonstrate that the AMS is dominantly carried by paramagnetic minerals and therefore is unaffected by the secondary magnetic overprints. AMS data are analyzed in terms of their shape and orientation, and according to the relationship between the q‐value (magnetic lineation/foliation) and the imbrication angle (β) of the minimum susceptibility axes with respect to bedding (q–β diagram). Using multiple lines of evidence, we demonstrate that AMS records primary sedimentary fabrics that reflect the depositional environments and paleocurrent conditions in which these rocks were deposited. The magnetic fabrics consistently record a SE‐NW paleocurrent orientation, with dominant direction of transport to the NW throughout the entire state of São Paulo, in agreement with ice flow and sediment transport directions reported from limited numbers of sites possessing sedimentary structures and ice‐kinematic indicators.

We present initial rock magnetic results for both lava flows and lapilli produced by the 2021 eruption of the Cumbre Vieja, La Palma (Canary Islands). Samples were taken during the eruption to minimize early alteration and weathering of the rocks and tephra. Standard procedures included progressive alternating field and thermal demagnetization, hysteresis curves, thermomagnetic experiments, progressive acquisition of isothermal remanent magnetization (IRM), and First-Order Reversal Curves (FORCs). Overall, our observations, including low to medium unblocking temperatures, isothermal remanent magnetization to 1 Tesla, and the abundance of wasp-waist hysteresis loops, strongly suggest the presence of Ti-rich titanomagnetites as the main remanence carriers in both lava flows and lapilli, in addition to some hematite as well. Whereas the former has been directly seen (SEM), hematite is elusive with nonmagnetic-based methods. Rock magnetic data, on a Day plot, also reveal that the magnetic grain size tends to be larger in the lava flows than in the lapilli.

In this study, we conducted a comprehensive investigation of rock magnetic, mineralogical, and sedimentological records of sediment cores supplemented by a high resolution seismic data to elucidate the controls of structural and diagenetic (early vs. late) processes on the sediment magnetism in active and relict cold seep sites in the Bay of Bengal. Two distinct sediment magnetic zones (Z-I and Z-II) are defined based on the down-core variations in rock magnetic properties. The sediment magnetism is carried by complex magnetic mineral assemblages of detrital (titanomagnetite, titanohematite) and authigenic (fine-grained greigite) minerals. Overall, the magnetic susceptibility varies over one order of magnitude with highest values found in relict core. Uppermost sediment magnetic zone (Z-I) is characterized by higher concentration of magnetite as seen through elevated values of magnetic susceptibility (χlf) and saturation isothermal remanent magnetization (SIRM). A systematic gradual decrease of χlf and IRM1T in Z-I is attributed to the progressive diagenetic dissolution of iron oxides and subsequent precipitation of iron sulfides. Magnetic grain size diagnostic (ARM/IRM1T) parameter decreases initially due to the preferential dissolution of fine-grained magnetite in the sulfidic zone (Z-I), and increases later in response to the authigenic formation of magnetite and greigite in methanic zone (Z-II). Distinct low S-ratio and χlf values in methanic zone of relict core is due to increased relative contribution from highly preserved coercive magnetic (titanohematite) grains of detrital origin which survived in the diagenetic processes. A strong linkage between occurrence of authigenic carbonates and greigite formation is observed. Two plausible mechanisms are proposed to explain the formation and preservation of greigite in Z-I and Z-II: 1) decline in methane flux due to massive hydrate accumulation within the active fault system and formation of authigenic carbonate crust in the sub-surface sediments hindered the supply of upward migrating fluid/gas; thereby limiting the sulfide production which preferentially enhanced greigite formation in Z-I and 2) restricted supply of downward diffusing sulfide by the carbonate layers in the uppermost sediments created a sulfide deficient zone which inhibited the pyritization and favoured the formation of greigite in the methanic zone (Z-II).

Abstract Archeological materials from the most ancient open‐pit gold mine in Europe have been investigated using mineral magnetic methods as part of the multidisciplinary research of the site. The aim of the study was to employ rock‐magnetic characteristics (magnetic susceptibility, anhysteretic remanent magnetization, isothermal remanent magnetization and various magnetic grain‐size dependent ratios) for classification of a collection of 177 samples, taken from Late Bronze age waste heaps, pristine rocks, natural soils and soils from cultural layers. Factor analysis and k‐means cluster analysis revealed that four clusters explain the best mineral magnetic data. Results from the thermomagnetic analysis and thermal demagnetization of composite isothermal remanence proved that the main magnetic minerals in the collection are magnetite/maghemite, hematite, and goethite. Based on the magnetic properties, samples from clusters 1 and 3 were identified as influenced by fire—archeological structures and waste heaps with the use of fire setting, respectively. Samples belonging to cluster 2 were dominated by goethite and hematite, thus identified as rock residues. Materials grouped in cluster 4 showed magnetic characteristics typical of natural soils and were thus related to this class of materials. The obtained clustering of the samples agreed well with their archeological assignment. Spatial distribution of cluster members across the site provides valuable environmental information for the location of the mining activities, their lateral spread and the technology used. It was concluded that magnetic mineral analysis is a precise, sensitive, and a highly effective method for characterization and classification of materials from ancient mining.

This paper presents an integrated paleomagnetic, rock magnetic and geochemical study of the Devonian Antrim shale in the Michigan Basin. Specimens were obtained from two unoriented vertical cores (named St. Chester and Krocker) and sampled relative to a master specimen orientation line. Alternating field (AF) demagnetization experiments isolated a lower coercivity component (LC) from 0 to ∼60 mT in the Krocker core and corresponds to a Jurassic (170 Ma ± 25) magnetization. Higher coercivity components (HC) in the Krocker core are unblocked from ∼60 to 120 mT and unlike LC components, occasionally exhibit stable unblocking temperature ranges (e.g., 150–450°C) and higher AF demagnetization ranges (∼60–120 mT). HC components in the Krocker core are unique to certain members within the Antrim shale with a poorly resolved Middle Permian/Late Triassic magnetization in the Paxton member and Late Pennsylvanian (305 Ma ± 10) component in the Norwood. The St. Chester well exhibited a LC component among all specimens with a slightly older (205 Ma ± 10) than the Krocker core. Rock magnetic parameters indicate the magnetization resides in PSD/SD magnetite in both HC and LC components. Overall, the magnetizations are interpreted to be chemical remanent magnetizations (CRMs) with the HC component residing in SD magnetite which formed during hydrothermal activity in both cores. The LC component likely resides in PSD/MD magnetite and is interpreted to have formed in response to fluid flow associated with tectonic uplift and/or hydrocarbon migration. Petrographic observations indicate mineral assemblages consistent with hydrothermal mineralization (e.g., baroque dolomite). Depleted δ18O data from carbonate fractures are consistent with a hydrothermal fluid magnetization mechanism. Consistent anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) lineations indicates either a long-lived paleocurrent direction or far-field tectonic shortening originating from the neighboring Acadian orogeny. Inorganic geochemistry indicate that paramagnetic Fe-rich clays carry the AMS signal. Lastly, an evaluation of the origin of chalcopyrite and monazite is performed through provenance analysis. These minerals are attributed to hydrothermal mineralization however, strong evidence suggests that some fraction of these grains were sourced from the Michigan Peninsula.

In order to understand further the emplacement (i.e., volcanic growth) of 22 Icelandite and 3 Rhyodacite cooling units in one of the long volcanic sequences known as Mauna Kuwale of the Wai’anae volcano (ca. 3.3 Ma), Oahu Hawaii we have conducted appropriate rock magnetic experiments described below as well as anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) studies of such 25 units. We have undertaken rock magnetic investigations such as continuous and partial thermo-magnetic cycles of low field magnetic susceptibility versus temperature dependence, (k-T) curves experiments. We classified the k-T heating-cooling dependence of susceptibility in three groups A, B and C. Type A: yielded two components of titano-magnetite with a predominat Ti rich phase and occasionally a relevant magnetite component phase. Type B: samples are characterized by Ti poor magnetites. Magnetite dominates as the main magnetic carrier. Type C: k-T curves show one single phase of titanomagnetite, and Ti poor magnetite. The coercivity or remanence, determined by back field magnetization is always −3 SI). Magnetic anisotropy/magnetic fabric is used as a tool in rock fabric analyses to investigate the preferred orientation of magnetic minerals in rocks. Magnetic anisotropy is low on all (measured) flows from the Icelandite cooling units from 1 to 17 (mean P’ = 1.010), but becomes noticeably distinct and high in rhyodacite cooling units 23, 24 and 25 (mean P’ = 1.074). Four units show a magnetic fabric with k3 axes vertical to sub-vertical which may be denoted as normal for the horizontal to sub horizontal units. Two Icelandite cooling units display oblate shapes and two other cooling units triaxial shapes. K1 axes are horizontal but point in different directions, i.e., NE and NW. Remaining cooling units show different magnetic fabric. Units 17, 23, 24 and 25, despite important variations in anisotropy (low for units 25 and high for units 23 and 24) and shape of ellipsoid (oblate in cooling unit 23, prolate in 24 and triaxial in 25) the k3 axes show the same orientation, SW to SSW dipping around 45° and a very steady magnetic lineation azimuth NW nearly horizontal to sub horizontal. The magnetic mineralogy and magnetic fabric indicate that both the Icelandite and Rhyodacite cooling units the magmatic evolution during the shield stage of the entire Wai’anae volcano and that such growth was not affected by tectonic deformation.
