To report the outcomes of cats that underwent surgical correction for sialoceles. Multi-institutional retrospective cohort study. Twenty-one client-owned cats. Medical records were examined of cats diagnosed with sialocele, which underwent surgical intervention over an 11-year period at one of 10 referral hospitals. The data collected included signalment, clinical signs, diagnostic imaging, histopathology, surgical procedures performed, and postoperative complications. The most common presenting complaints for cats with sialocele included dysphagia and ptyalism. Only two cats had a recent history of trauma, and one was diagnosed with a concurrent sialolith. Most displayed visible tissue swelling, with ranulae being most common. Surgical treatment consisted of sialoadenectomy and/or marsupialization. Intraoperative complications occurred in three cats, and postoperative complications in five cats. No recurrence or development of contralateral sialoceles were reported during the follow-up period (30-968 days). The majority of cats did not have a clear underlying cause for developing a sialocele. The sublingual and mandibular salivary glands were presumed to be the most commonly affected. Mandibular and sublingual sialoadenectomy and/or marsupialization provided resolution of clinical signs to the 21 cats that underwent these procedures. Sialocele, although rare, should remain a differential diagnosis when managing cats with relevant clinical signs. Surgical intervention appears to offer resolution of signs with apparently low overall risk of complication or short-term recurrence. In cats it is necessary to evaluate whether sialoadenectomy is necessary, or whether marsupialization alone should be attempted as a less invasive first-line surgical intervention.

BACKGROUND: To enhance the utility of functional hemodynamic monitoring, the variables systolic slope (dP/dt) and dynamic arterial elastance (Eadyn) are calculated by the Hypotension Prediction Index (HPI) Acumen® Software. This study was designed to characterize the effects of phenylephrine and ephedrine on dP/dt and Eadyn. METHODS: This was a retrospective, non-randomized analysis of data collected during two clinical studies. All patients required intra-operative controlled mechanical ventilation and had an indwelling radial artery catheter connected to an Acumen IQ sensor. Raw arterial pressure waveform data was downloaded from the patient monitor and all hemodynamic measurements were calculated off-line. The anesthetic record was reviewed for bolus administrations of either phenylephrine or ephedrine. Cardiovascular variables prior to drug administration were compared to those following vasopressor administrations. The primary outcome was the difference for dP/dt and Eadyn at baseline compared with the average after the bolus administration. All data sets demonstrated non-normal distributions so statistical analysis of paired and unpaired data followed the Wilcoxon matched pairs signed-rank test or Mann-Whitney U test, respectively. RESULTS: 201 doses of phenylephrine and 100 doses of ephedrine were analyzed. All data sets are reported as median [95% CI]. Mean arterial pressure (MAP) increased from 62 [54,68] to 78 [76,80] mmHg following phenylephrine and from 59 [55,62] to 80 [77,83] mmHg following ephedrine. Stroke volume and cardiac output both increased. Stroke volume variation and pulse pressure variation decreased. Both drugs produced significant increases in dP/dt, from 571 [531, 645] to 767 [733, 811] mmHg/sec for phenylephrine and from 537 [509, 596] to 848 [779, 930] mmHg/sec for ephedrine. No significant changes in Eadyn were observed. CONCLUSION: Bolus administration of phenylephrine or ephedrine increases dP/dt but does not change Eadyn. dP/dt demonstrates potential for predicting the inotropic response to phenylephrine or ephedrine, providing guidance for the most efficacious vasopressor when treating hypotension. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Data was collected from two protocols. The first was deemed to not require written, informed consent by the Institutional Review Board (IRB). The second was IRB-approved (Effect of Diastolic Dysfunction on Dynamic Cardiac Monitors) and registered on ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT04177225).

Abstract Objective This study aimed to develop and validate a nomogram for assessing the risk of nosocomial infections among obstetric inpatients, providing a valuable reference for predicting and mitigating the risk of postpartum infections. Methods A retrospective observational study was performed on a cohort of 28,608 obstetric patients admitted for childbirth between 2017 and 2022. Data from the year 2022, comprising 4,153 inpatients, were utilized for model validation. Univariable and multivariable stepwise logistic regression analyses were employed to identify the factors influencing nosocomial infections among obstetric inpatients. A nomogram was subsequently developed based on the final predictive model. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was utilized to calculate the area under the curve (AUC) to evaluate the predictive accuracy of the nomogram in both the training and validation datasets. Results The gestational weeks > = 37, prenatal anemia, prenatal hypoproteinemia, premature rupture of membranes (PROM), cesarean sction, operative delivery, adverse birth outcomes, length of hospitalization (days) > 5, CVC use and catheterization of ureter were included in the ultimate prediction model. The AUC of the nomogram was 0.828 (0.823, 0.833) in the training dataset and 0.855 (0.844, 0.865) in the validation dataset. Conclusion Through a large-scale retrospective study conducted in China, we developed and independently validated a nomogram to enable personalized postpartum infections risk estimates for obstetric inpatients. Its clinical application can facilitate early identification of high-risk groups, enabling timely infection prevention and control measures.

The clinical data were collected for the enrolled patients. Progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), and adverse events were analyzed.Results: A total of 174 patients with HCC were enrolled. The median PFS was 11.1 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 8.1− 14.0) months for patients who took aspirin and 8.6 (95% CI: 5.5− 11.8) months for patients who did not take aspirin. The median OS of patients in the aspirin group was 76.7 (95% CI: 58.1− 95.3) months and that in the non-aspirin group was 53.5 (95% CI: 42.7− 64.3) months. In patients with non-viral HCC, OS was significantly better for the aspirin group (P = 0.03) after ablation. The PFS of patients who underwent ablation alone in the aspirin group was obviously superior to that of patients in the non-aspirin group (P = 0.002). Stratified Cox regression analysis demonstrated that aspirin use after ablation might be a protective factor in specific HCC patient subgroups. The incidence of major adverse events did not significantly differ between the two groups.Conclusion: Low-dose aspirin use was associated with better OS in patients with non-viral HCC after thermal ablation. In patients who received thermal ablation alone, the administration of low-dose aspirin could improve PFS. Objective Currently, there is no established guideline on whether to opt for percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy (PELD) or traditional transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) surgery based on specific types of lumbar disc herniation (LDH). Based on the Michigan State University (MSU) classification system, this study conducted a medium‐ to long‐term follow‐up analysis of two surgical methods over 5 years for the first time, aiming to provide empirical evidence to assist in making more informed decisions before surgery for LDH treatment. Methods This was a retrospective study that included 273 patients with single‐level LDH who underwent PELD or TLIF treatment at our hospital between January 1, 2016, and December 31, 2018. Detailed metrics included preoperative and postoperative visual analogue scale (VAS) scores and Oswestry disability index (ODI) at 1‐day, 1‐week, 1‐year, and 5‐year follow‐ups. Complications, recurrences, and 5‐year postoperative modified MacNab criteria scores were also recorded. Multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression models were used to identify potential risk factors. A prognostic nomogram was developed based on the multivariate analyses. The receiver operating characteristic curve determined the optimal cutoff value for AGR.Results: The results indicated a statistically significant decrease in AGR among patients with BC. Significant disparities were observed in globulin and AGR levels between the two cohorts. AGR was significantly associated with tumor size and stage, with a marked decline in advanced stages of BC. Additionally, AGR and aspartate transaminase/Alanine aminotransferase (AST/ALT) emerged as significant diagnostic indicators for invasive carcinoma and advanced stages (II–IV) of BC. Specifically, AGR exhibited an area under the curve of 0.645 (P < 0.003), highlighting the discriminatory capacity of serum globulin levels in distinguishing between BC and non-BC cohorts.Conclusions: The AGR, routinely assessed due to its simplicity, objectivity, and cost-effectiveness, holds promise as a potential risk factor for BC and may have practical implications in clinical settings.Keywords: albumin to globulin ratio, risk factor, breast cancer, retrospective study

Abstract Objectives This study aimed to comprehensively analyze the prevalence and influencing factors of Zygomatic Air Cell Defects (ZACD) among pediatric and adolescent populations in Saudi Arabia and Yemen. Materials and methods A cross-sectional retrospective study was conducted, utilizing digital panoramic radiographs of dental outpatients aged 6 to 18 years. The data were collected from registered digital databases of dental clinics in Al-Qassim, Saudi Arabia, and an oral and maxillofacial radiology center in Sana’a, Yemen, covering the period from July 2018 to September 2022. The radiographs were evaluated based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, and ZACD was assessed using standardized descriptions. Statistical analysis, including logistic regression, was employed to examine the impact of the associated factors. Results The study encompassed a total of 3,169 participants, revealing an overall ZACD prevalence of 28.5%. Age emerged as a significant predictor (p ≤ 0.0001), with the likelihood of ZACD increasing as the age of the individual advances. Gender and geographic region did not exhibit statistically significant differences in ZACD prevalence. Conclusion This study provides crucial insights into the prevalence of Zygomatic Air Cell Defects among pediatric and adolescent populations in Saudi Arabia and Yemen. It underscores the prevalence of ZACD and the notable influence of age on its occurrence. Additionally, the research challenges prior notions of gender and regional variations in ZACD prevalence, emphasizing the complexity of the factors involved. Early detection is essential to avoid unwanted complications during any surgical intervention in this area.

We obtained qEEG recordings from patients with schizophrenia and explored them for patterns indicative of treatment responsiveness.Patients and Methods: The study included 68 patients had been diagnosed with schizophrenia spectrum disorder. After retrospectively gathering demographic information, clinical data such as qEEG, Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), a multiple regression analysis was performed. This analysis employed baseline qEEG findings as independent variables and PANSS score changes as dependent variables to discern causal relationships.Results: The mean age of the participants was 38.4 years(SD =13.73). The mean PANSS score on admission was 92.97, decreasing to 67.41 at discharge. Multiple regression analysis revealed that delta waves in T4 (β=0.346, t=3.165, p=0.002), and high-beta waves in Fp2 (β=0.231, t=2.361, p=0.021) were associated with PANSS changes in absolute power. In addition, the delta waves of O2 (β=0.250, t=3.288, p=0.002); beta waves of T3 (β=− 1.463, t=− 5.423, p< 0.001) and O2 (β=0.551, t=3.366, p=0.001); high beta waves of Fp1 (β=0.307, t=4.026, p< 0.001), T3 (β=0.855, t=4.414, p< 0.001) and T6 (β=− 0.838, t=− 4.559, p< 0.001) of absolute power using the Z-score were also related to PANSS changes. Pearson’s correlation analysis showed that only delta waves at Cz (r= 0.246, p=0.043) in absolute power correlated with changes in the PANSS.Conclusion: We found that certain qEEG wave patterns in patients with schizophrenia prior to antipsychotic treatment were linked to PANSS changes before and after treatment. Delta waves and beta waves, primarily in the frontal and temporal regions, were found to be significantly associated with changes in PANSS scores. In the future, the qEEG indicators identified in this study could serve as electrophysiological markers for predicting antipsychotic treatment responses in patients with schizophrenia.Keywords: schizophrenia, treatment response, quantitative electroencephalography, electrophysiological marker, retrospective study
