Abstract

mtDNA analysis shows that a significant population expansion from southwestern Europe into northeastern Europe took place during the Late Paleolithic, about 10,000-15,000 years ago. Haplogroup V acts as an mtDNA marker of the expansion, while haplogroup H also was spread. Other genetic evidence supports the expansion. Nine Eurasian populations, a total of 419 individuals, were studied for the mtDNA analysis.

Abstract

A recent dispersal of modern humans out of Africa is now widely accepted, but the routes taken across Eurasia are still disputed. We show that mitochondrial DNA variation in isolated “relict” populations in southeast Asia supports the view that there was only a single dispersal from Africa, most likely via a southern coastal route, through India and onward into southeast Asia and Australasia. There was an early offshoot, leading ultimately to the settlement of the Near East and Europe, but the main dispersal from India to Australia ∼65,000 years ago was rapid, most likely taking only a few thousand years.

Abstract

Why do individuals engage in violence against the state? This research investigates the biological and environmental determinants of individual-level participation in political violence through the use of a Candidate Gene Association, gene-environment interaction, study. Existing research has demonstrated that variation in a specific gene (called MAO-A) is associated with aggression. However, relatively little scholarly attention has been paid to the interaction with the environment; specifically, the ways in which repressive political environments differentially incite acts of violence. Using original genetic, survey and experimental data collected on participants and non-participants of political violence, I find that under conditions of political repression, individuals with the low MAO-A genetic variant are significantly more likely to engage in acts of political violence. By examining both the genetic and environmental factors influencing political violence, the results make a significant contribution to our understanding of how genetic variation may lead to violence. Abstract

Introduction: Keratoconus (KC) is a complex, genetically heterogeneous, multifactorial degenerative disorder that is accompanied by corneal ectasia which usually progresses asymmetrically. With an incidence of approximately 1 per 2000 and 2 cases per 100,000 population presenting annually, KC follows an autosomal recessive or dominant pattern of inheritance and is, apparently, associated with genes that interact with environmental, genetic, and/or other factors. This is an important consideration in refractive surgery in the case of familial KC, given the association of KC with other genetic disorders and the imbalance between dizygotic twins. The present review attempts to identify the genetic loci contributing to the different KC clinical presentations and relate them to the common genetically determined comorbidities associated with KC.Methods: The PubMed, MEDLINE, Google Scholar, and GeneCards databases were screened for KC-related articles published in English between January 2006 and November 2017. Keyword combinations of “keratoconus,” “risk factor(s),” “genetics,” “genes,” “genetic association(s),” and “cornea” were used. In total, 217 articles were retrieved and analyzed, with greater weight placed on the more recent literature. Further bibliographic research based on the 217 articles revealed another 124 relevant articles that were included in this review. Using the reviewed literature, an attempt was made to correlate genes and genetic risk factors with KC characteristics and genetically related comorbidities associated with KC based on genome-wide association studies, family-based linkage analysis, and candidate-gene approaches.Results: An association matrix between known KC-related genes and KC symptoms and/or clinical signs together with an association matrix between identified KC genes and genetically related KC comorbidities/syndromes were constructed.Conclusion: Twenty-four genes were identified as potential contributors to KC and 49 KC-related comorbidities/syndromes were found. More than 85% of the known KC-related genes are involved in glaucoma, Down syndrome, connective tissue disorders, endothelial dystrophy, posterior polymorphous corneal dystrophy, and cataract. Abstract

L'Homme a su dénombrer et compter avant de savoir écrire. En Eurasie, notre première numération s'est incarnée dans le langage à une date antérieure à celle de l'invention de l'écriture en Mésopotamie où naissent les premières sociétés agropastorales. Dans l'espace francophone, le système de numération est profondément décimal, basé sur «　10　». Pourtant, les traces d'un système vigésimal fondé sur «　20　» sont conservées en français standard, avec quatre-vingts et quatre-vingt-dix, au lieu d'octante　/　huitante et nonante. Outre des difficultés pour l'apprentissage du nombre, ces irrégularités de la numération, partagées notamment par le breton ou le gallois (langues celtiques), mais aussi par le danois (langue germanique) et le basque, demeurent le casse-tête des linguistes et des historiens. La résolution tout à fait inédite de cette énigme apporte surtout du «　grain à moudre　» à la controverse scientifique qui fait rage aujourd'hui sur l'âge des langues indo-européennes et l'époque de formation de ses familles. Cette minutieuse enquête à l'échelle continentale dans les recoins les plus actuels des sciences – linguistique historique, aréale et typologique, dialectologie, philologie, archéologie préhistorique, anthropologie sociale, psychologie cognitive, arithmétique, etc. – nous fait entrevoir le chemin parcouru par l'humanité pour concevoir, depuis les sociétés de chasseurs-cueilleurs, la pluralité et l'idée de nombre.
