1. Interplay between $M_W$, $\Omega_{\rm CDM} h^2$, and $(g-2)_{\mu}$ in Flavor Symmetry-Based Supersymmetric Models

Abstract

We study the phenomenological implications of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) augmented by a non-abelian flavor symmetry labeled as sMSSM. Incorporating this flavor symmetry allows for a significant reduction in the original plethora of free parameters present in the MSSM, ultimately reducing them down to just seven in sMSSM. This reduction of free parameters is not achieved through ad hoc assumptions like in the constrained MSSM (CMSSM); rather, it is grounded in theoretical considerations. Our work focuses on exploring the interplay between the $W$ boson mass ($M_W$) predictions, the cold dark matter (CDM) relic abundance ($\Omega_{\rm CDM} h^2$), and the $(g-2)_{\mu}$ anomaly. We identified correlations among the theoretical parameters arising from this interplay, which can be complemented by experimental constraints such as the Higgs boson mass, B-physics observables, and charge and color breaking minima. Additionally, our investigations show that the $(g-2)_{\mu}$ discrepancy and the Planck bounds on $\Omega_{\rm CDM} h^2$ can be addressed within the sMSSM, but only in a very narrow region of the parameter space.

Abstract

Sixth-generation (6G) networks pose substantial security risks because confidential information is transmitted over wireless channels with a broadcast nature, and various attack vectors emerge. Physical layer security (PLS) exploits the dynamic characteristics of wireless environments to provide secure communications, while reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) can facilitate PLS by controlling wireless transmissions. With RIS-aided PLS, a lightweight security solution can be designed for low-end Internet of Things (IoT) devices, depending on the design scenario and communication objective. This article discusses RIS-aided PLS designs for 6G-IoT networks against eavesdropping and jamming attacks. The theoretical background and literature review of RIS-aided PLS are discussed, and design solutions related to resource allocation, beamforming, artificial noise, and cooperative communication are presented. We provide simulation results to show the effectiveness of RIS in terms of PLS. In addition, we examine the research issues and possible solutions for RIS modeling, channel modeling and estimation, optimization, and machine learning. 13. Mapping Temporary Slums from Satellite Imagery using a Semi-Supervised Approach

Abstract

One billion people worldwide are estimated to be living in slums, and documenting and analyzing these regions is a challenging task. As compared to regular slums; the small, scattered and temporary nature of temporary slums makes data collection and labeling tedious and time-consuming. To tackle this challenging problem of temporary slums detection, we present a semi-supervised deep learning segmentation-based approach; with the strategy to detect initial seed images in the zero-labeled data settings. A small set of seed samples (32 in our case) are automatically discovered by analyzing the temporal changes, which are manually labeled to train a segmentation and representation learning module. The segmentation module gathers high dimensional image representations, and the representation learning module transforms image representations into embedding vectors. After that, a scoring module uses the embedding vectors to sample images from a large pool of unlabeled images and generates pseudo-labels for the sampled images. These sampled images with their pseudo-labels are added to the training set to update the segmentation and representation learning modules iteratively. To analyze the effectiveness of our technique, we construct a large geographically marked dataset of temporary slums. This dataset constitutes more than 200 potential temporary slum locations (2.28 square kilometers) found by sieving sixty-eight thousand images from 12 metropolitan cities of Pakistan covering 8000 square kilometers. Furthermore, our proposed method outperforms several competitive semi-supervised semantic segmentation baselines on a similar setting. The code and the dataset will be made publicly available.

Abstract

BackgroundLevels of plasma SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid (N) antigen may be an important biomarker in patients with COVID-19 and enhance our understanding of the pathogenesis of COVID-19.ObjectiveTo evaluate whether levels of plasma antigen can predict short-term clinical outcomes and identify clinical and viral factors associated with plasma antigen levels in hospitalized patients with SARS-CoV-2.DesignCross-sectional study of baseline plasma antigen level from 2540 participants enrolled in the TICO (Therapeutics for Inpatients With COVID-19) platform trial from August 2020 to November 2021, with additional data on day 5 outcome and time to discharge.Setting114 centers in 10 countries.ParticipantsAdults hospitalized for acute SARS-CoV-2 infection with 12 days or less of symptoms.MeasurementsBaseline plasma viral N antigen level was measured at a central laboratory. Delta variant status was determined from baseline nasal swabs using reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction. Associations between baseline patient characteristics and viral factors and baseline plasma antigen levels were assessed using both unadjusted and multivariable modeling. Association between elevated baseline antigen level of 1000 ng/L or greater and outcomes, including worsening of ordinal pulmonary scale at day 5 and time to hospital discharge, were evaluated using logistic regression and Fine-Gray regression models, respectively.ResultsPlasma antigen was below the level of quantification in 5% of participants at enrollment, and 1000 ng/L or greater in 57%. Baseline pulmonary severity of illness was strongly associated with plasma antigen level, with mean plasma antigen level 3.10-fold higher among those requiring noninvasive ventilation or high-flow nasal cannula compared with room air (95% CI, 2.22 to 4.34). Plasma antigen level was higher in those who lacked antispike antibodies (6.42 fold; CI, 5.37 to 7.66) and in those with the Delta variant (1.73 fold; CI, 1.41 to 2.13). Additional factors associated with higher baseline antigen level included male sex, shorter time since hospital admission, decreased days of remdesivir, and renal impairment. In contrast, race, ethnicity, body mass index, and immunocompromising conditions were not associated with plasma antigen levels. Plasma antigen level of 1000 ng/L or greater was associated with a markedly higher odds of worsened pulmonary status at day 5 (odds ratio, 5.06 [CI, 3.41 to 7.50]) and longer time to hospital discharge (median, 7 vs. 4 days; subhazard ratio, 0.51 [CI, 0.45 to 0.57]), with subhazard ratios similar across all levels of baseline pulmonary severity.LimitationsPlasma samples were drawn at enrollment, not hospital presentation. No point-of-care test to measure plasma antigen is currently available.ConclusionElevated plasma antigen is highly associated with both severity of pulmonary illness and clinically important patient outcomes. Multiple clinical and viral factors are associated with plasma antigen level at presentation. BackgroundEnsovibep (MP0420) is a designed ankyrin repeat protein, a novel class of engineered proteins, under investigation as a treatment of SARS-CoV-2 infection.ObjectiveTo investigate if ensovibep, in addition to remdesivir and other standard care, improves clinical outcomes among patients hospitalized with COVID-19 compared with standard care alone.DesignDouble-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, clinical trial. (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT04501978).SettingMultinational, multicenter trial.ParticipantsAdults hospitalized with COVID-19.InterventionIntravenous ensovibep, 600 mg, or placebo.MeasurementsEnsovibep was assessed for early futility on the basis of pulmonary ordinal scores at day 5. The primary outcome was time to sustained recovery through day 90, defined as 14 consecutive days at home or place of usual residence after hospital discharge. A composite safety outcome that included death, serious adverse events, end-organ disease, and serious infections was assessed through day 90.ResultsAn independent data and safety monitoring board recommended that enrollment be halted for early futility after 485 patients were randomly assigned and received an infusion of ensovibep (n = 247) or placebo (n = 238). The odds ratio (OR) for a more favorable pulmonary outcome in the ensovibep (vs. placebo) group at day 5 was 0.93 (95% CI, 0.67 to 1.30; P = 0.68; OR > 1 would favor ensovibep). The 90-day cumulative incidence of sustained recovery was 82% for ensovibep and 80% for placebo (subhazard ratio [sHR], 1.06 [CI, 0.88 to 1.28]; sHR > 1 would favor ensovibep). 32. Chronic stress-mediated dysregulations in inflammatory, immune and oxidative circuitry impairs the therapeutic response of methotrexate in experimental autoimmune disease models.

Abstract

Chronic stress is significantly implicated in the worsening of autoimmune disorders, contributing to elevated inflammation and diminished therapeutic efficacy. Here, in this study, we investigated the detrimental impact of an 8-week chronic unpredictable stress (CUS) protocol on the progression of arthritis and psoriasis using collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) and imiquimod (IMQ)-induced psoriasis rat models, respectively. Our objective was to elucidate how prolonged stress exacerbates disease severity and impairs the effectiveness of treatment drug. Following the induction of CIA and IMQ, rats were subjected to an 8-week CUS paradigm designed to simulate chronic stress conditions. Moreover, after 5 weeks of CUS, methotrexate (MTX; 2 mg/kg, administered once weekly for 3 weeks, intraperitoneally) was introduced as a therapeutic intervention. The severity of CUS-induced effects and the therapeutic impairment of MTX in arthritis and psoriasis rats were assessed through pathological examination of joint and epidermal tissues, respectively. Additionally, we measured various pro-inflammatory cytokine levels, including NF-κB (nuclear factor kappa B), IFN-γ (interferon-gamma), TNF-α (tumour necrosis factor alpha), IL (interleukin)-1β, IL-6, IL-17 and IL-23 using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), analysed immune cells through complete haematological profiling and evaluated oxidative stress markers. Our findings revealed that CUS significantly aggravated the pathological features of both arthritis and psoriasis. Prolonged stress exposure led to heightened inflammatory responses, increased oxidative stress and more severe tissue damage. Moreover, the therapeutic efficacy of MTX was notably reduced in stressed rats compared to non-stressed, underscoring the detrimental effects of chronic stress on treatment outcomes. Abstract

The present paper is a comprehensive study on the optimization of ultrasonic assisted extraction and characterization of valued components from the newly developed garlic cultivar NARC-G1. The response surface methodology was employed to optimize the extraction time, solvent-to-solid ratio and extraction temperature, for optimal total phenolic contents (TPC), DPPH radical scavenging activity, α-amylase inhibition, and α-glucosidase inhibition. Under the optimized conditions (23 min extraction time, 60 °C temperature, and 39 : 1 solvent-to-solute ratio) the optimal TPC (13.76 mg GAE/g), DPPH radical scavenging activity (62.76 %), α-amylase inhibition (71.43 %), and α-glucosidase inhibition (79.43 %) were obtained. Significant correlations were observed between actual values and predicted values for the selected responses. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), revealed 26 high-value bioactives, with diallyl disulphide being the most abundant (16.22 %), followed by 2,3-dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy-6-methyl, 4H-pyran-4-one and 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural. Additionally, in silico investigation indicated that stigmasterol, arbutin, squalene, α-tocopherol and linoleic acid were responsible for antihyperglycemic potential. Moreover, antimicrobial activity revealed that S. mutans (19.25±1.98 mm) and L. monocytogenes (19.34±2.04 mm) were the most sensitive, while P. aeruginosa was the least sensitive bacterial strains against the optimized NARC-G1 garlic extract. 34. Vacuum Stability Constraints on Flavor Mixing Parameters and Their Effect on Gluino Decays

Abstract

In this article, we study the two body gluino decays $\tilde{g} \rightarrow \tilde{u}_i \bar{u}_g$, $\tilde{g} \rightarrow \tilde{d}_i \bar{d}_g$ with $i=1,2,...6$ and $g=1,2,3$ in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) with quark flavour violation (QFV). At the outset, constraints on QFV parameters $\delta _{ij}^{U/D(LR)}$ and $\delta _{ij}^{U/D(RL)}$ with $i,j=1,2,3$ and $(i\neq j) $ are calculated for a specific set of MSSM parameters using charge and color breaking minima (CCB) and unbounded from below minima (UFB) conditions. These constraints are more stringent compared to the constraints coming from B-physics observables (BPO), that are already available in literature. In the second step, we re-calculate the partial decay widths of $\tilde{g} \rightarrow \tilde{u}_i \bar{u}_g$, $\tilde{g} \rightarrow \tilde{d}_i \bar{d}_g$ for the allowed range of QFV parameters. The partial decay widths can reach upto 120 GeV in the RR sector of the squarks mass matrices while in the LL sector it can be $\approx 90$ GeV. The QFV in the LR/RL sector is usually ignored due to stringent CCB andd UFB constraints, however, our analysis reveals that this mixing can contribute upto $\approx 12 $ GeV for some parameter points and should not be ignored. We hope that these results will prove helpful for the experimental searches of gluinos at the current and future colliders.

37. Excited lepton triplet contribution to electroweak observables at one loop level

Abstract

In this paper, we present the one-loop radiative corrections to the electroweak precision observable $\Delta \rho$ coming from the $I_W=1$ multiplet excited leptons. We have calculated the couplings of the exotic lepton triplet to the vector bosons and ordinary leptons using effective Lagrangian approach. These couplings are then used to estimate the excited lepton triplet contribution to the $\Delta \rho$ parameter. The mass degenerate excited lepton contribution to $\Delta \rho $ is small and can be neglected. However, if the excited leptons are non-degenerate, their contribution can be large which can result in more stringent constraints on the excited fermion parameter space compared to the constraints from present experimental searches and perturbative unitarity condition.

Abstract

Relative drifts between different species or particle populations are characteristic to solar plasma outflows, e.g., in the fast streams of the solar winds, coronal mass ejections and interplanetary shocks. This paper characterizes the dispersion and stability of the low-beta alpha/proton drifts in the absence of any intrinsic thermal anisotropies, which are usually invoked in order to stimulate various instabilities. The dispersion relations derived here describe the full spectrum of instabilities and their variations with the angle of propagation and plasma parameters. The results unveil a potential competition between instabilities of the electromagnetic proton cyclotron and alpha cyclotron modes. For conditions specific to a low-beta solar wind, e.g., at low heliocentric distances in the outer corona, the instability operates on the alpha cyclotron branch. The growth rates of the alpha cyclotron mode are systematically stimulated by the (parallel) plasma beta and/or the alpha-proton temperature ratio. One can therefore expect that this instability develops even in the absence of temperature anisotropies, with potential to contribute to a self-consistent regulation of the observed drift of alpha particles., Comment: Accepted for publication at Astrophysics and Space Science

Abstract

The emission of muonium ($\mu^+e^-$) atoms into vacuum from silica aerogel with laser ablation on its surface was studied with various ablation structures at room temperature using the subsurface muon beams at TRIUMF and Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). Laser ablation was applied to produce holes or grooves with typical dimensions of a few hundred $\mu$m to a few mm, except for some extreme conditions. The measured emission rate tends to be higher for larger fractions of ablation opening and for shallower depths. More than a few ablation structures reach the emission rates similar to the highest achieved in the past measurements. The emission rate is found to be stable at least for a couple of days. Measurements of spin precession amplitudes for the produced muonium atoms and remaining muons in a magnetic field determine a muonium formation fraction of $(65.5 \pm 1.8)$%. The precession of the polarized muonium atoms is also observed clearly in vacuum. Abstract

The current study focused on the exploration of bacterial community in heavy metal contaminated soil using culture dependent and independent approaches that might be applied to the bioremediation process. A total of 150 bacterial colonies were examined from the heavy metal-contaminated soil at initial level, and 25 isolates were chosen for further examination. Finally, twelve strains were chosen for future research based on their high levels of heavy metal resistance. The 10 bacterial strains i.e.,1K-10K were then characterized on the basis of their morphology and microscopic analysis. The morphological and biochemical characteristic relied on the basis of Bergey's manual of bacterial classification that 1K as Pseudomonas sp., 2K as Enterobacter sp., 3K as Streptococcus sp., 4K as Staphylococcus sp.,5K as Staphylococcus sp., 6K as Pseudomonas sp., 7K as Micrococcus sp., 8K as Staphylococcus sp., 9K as Staphylococcus sp. & 10K as Staphylococcus sp. In metagenomics analysis, the most prevalent bacteria present in samples were "Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Pseudomonas Cyanobacteria, Bacteriodes, and Sphingomonas. Among the 29 identified phyla, Chloroflexi and Tenericutes were the most dominant phyla and their relative abundance ranged from 0.75-1.00. While, on the genera level, the most abundant genera were Blautia, Rhodoplanes followed by Prevotella and Arenimonas. The relative abundance of these genera ranged from 0.75% to 1.00%. Depending on the relative abundance of taxons, the results of this study showed Proteobacteria, Synergistetes and Bacteriodes were most abundant phylum while the least abundant phylum present in heavy metal contaminated soil was Chlamydia and Tenericutes. Screening of soil-based libraries using functional and sequence-based specifications, which has disclosed information on soil microbial communities, has made it possible to identify new microbial communities. Thus, the culture dependent and independent approaches revealed that even heavy metal contaminated soil compose of diverse group of bacterial community that could be explored for bioremediation purposes.
