Weather radar is now widely viewed by the general public in the United States via television, computers/tablets, and smartphones. Anyone can consult near-real-time maps and animations of weather radar data when weather conditions are a factor. However, the usefulness of weather radar data for each user depends on a complex interaction of factors. There have been few studies providing conceptual arguments and empirical data to better understand what the most important factors are and to comprehend patterns of public weather radar use across the United States. The first part of this research provides a basic conceptual framework for research investigating the usefulness of weather radar displays as a source of weather information and as a decision aid. The second part aims to uncover several factors that influence the perceived usefulness rating of the National Weather Service (NWS) website’s weather radar display at both national and regional levels using variables gathered from the 2014 NWS customer satisfaction survey alongside relevant geographic and climatological variables. Data analyses include spatial clustering and ordinal regression utilized within a generalized linear model methodology. Overall, respondents who are more familiar with the NWS and their products, as well as those who indicate they are more likely to take action based on information provided by the NWS, are more likely to find the NWS radar display useful. Geographically, the NWS radar display is most useful to persons residing in the southern United States. Lightning is the most important hazard associated with higher radar usefulness ratings.

Radar PPI is used to display the range and Azimath of a target as a dot inside range circles, a scanning line usually represents the direction of the Radar antenna. In order to implement a Radar PPI on FPGA a VGA controller must be designed in VHDL, this VGA controller must provide the correct timing and data to display the range circles, the scanning line and the target.

Weather information is widely available across many media platforms, including televisions, computers, smartphones, and tablets. In addition to weather forecast information, people are seeking and using a variety of weather information sources that provide them with current conditions and include tools such as satellite images and weather radar displays. However, little is known about how individuals use and perceive information from weather radar displays, despite the existence of radar since the 1940s. This study is a novel exploration of how Tampa Bay area residents use radar and identifies several important factors that influence how useful radar is perceived to be as a decision-making tool. It also investigates what information radar users find most important when choosing to view a radar display, as well as what electronic sources are used most often to access weather radar. The final goal of this study is to identify which activities motivate a Tampa Bay resident to view weather radar. Data were collected using an online survey instrument. This study finds that survey respondents in the Tampa Bay area frequently view a weather radar display and find it to be a very useful tool. Respondents who reported greater accuracy for the location of precipitation on a radar display were more likely to rate the radar display as being more useful. The majority of respondents indicate they use a smartphone device to view radar most often and that participating in outdoor activities was an important motivator for using radar.

Radar display console is an equipment which is closely associated with people as a medium of human-computer interaction. However, for the sake of heat dissipation, draught fans in display console make continuous noise when radar is on operation, the noise dose harm to human health. In order to reduce the noise, an impedance compound muffler is designed in this paper, and then the acoustic characteristics of muffler is studied by simulation method. In the end, the simulation results are verified by means of noise spectrum analyser, as a result, the muffler obtains good silencing effect and the maximum sound level of the radar display console is reduced by 3dB.

In this research, the design and manufacture of radar display software using Plan Position Indicator (PPI) format for air surveillance radar application are presented. The PPI display shows interpretations of echo detections of radar signal reflected from the flying objects/targets. The detection results will be displayed on a circular 360ᵒ area, where the radar position is at the center. System configuration is done via interface from the display, by adjusting the level of transmit signal, by setting the gain for threshold, and by enabling moving target indicator (MTI) mode. The MTI mode only displays moving objects and no non-moving objects are shown such as mountains and buildings. Based on the results of this research, the PPI display shows the targets on the display according to its position, some desired targets can also be tracked, information on target, GPS location, target ID, required parameters, and some settings. The radar display fulfills all the required capabilities for air surveillance radar.

Eye movement tracking is a commonly used method for researchers to study the cognitive process of individuals in the Human Computer Interface (HCI) domain. By tracking the eye movement of the test subjects, researchers are then able to investigate into the cognitive processing of the participants. This method is also used widely in the field of Air Traffic Control (ATC), many involving the use of wearable device and multiple displays. However, work on the eye movement activity on a single screen, the radar screen, with the use of a remote eye tracker is sparse. This paper presents an algorithm for computing some eye tracking metric for such a study and together with some results from an experiment. These metrics are shown to be effective and useful, allowing it to serve as a good basis for further work in this domain.
