In this paper, we develop high-order, conservative, non-splitting Eulerian-Lagrangian (EL) Runge-Kutta (RK) finite volume (FV) weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) schemes for convection-diffusion equations. The proposed EL-RK-FV-WENO scheme defines modified characteristic lines and evolves the solution along them, significantly relaxing the time-step constraint for the convection term. The main algorithm design challenge arises from the complexity of constructing accurate and robust reconstructions on dynamically varying Lagrangian meshes. This reconstruction process is needed for flux evaluations on time-dependent upstream quadrilaterals and time integrations along moving characteristics. To address this, we propose a strategy that utilizes a WENO reconstruction on a fixed Eulerian mesh for spatial reconstruction, and updates intermediate solutions on the Eulerian background mesh for implicit-explicit RK temporal integration. This strategy leverages efficient reconstruction and remapping algorithms to manage the complexities of polynomial reconstructions on time-dependent quadrilaterals, while ensuring local mass conservation. The proposed scheme ensures mass conservation due to the flux-form semi-discretization and the mass-conservative reconstruction on both background and upstream cells. Extensive numerical tests have been performed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

A long-standing and formidable challenge faced by all conservative schemes for relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (RMHD) is the recovery of primitive variables from conservative ones. This process involves solving highly nonlinear equations subject to physical constraints. An ideal solver should be "robust, accurate, and fast -- it is at the heart of all conservative RMHD schemes," as emphasized in [S.C. Noble et al., ApJ, 641:626-637, 2006]. Despite over three decades of research, seeking efficient solvers that can provably guarantee stability and convergence remains an open problem. This paper presents the first theoretical analysis for designing a robust, physical-constraint-preserving (PCP), and provably (quadratically) convergent Newton-Raphson (NR) method for primitive variable recovery in RMHD. Our key innovation is a unified approach for the initial guess, devised based on sophisticated analysis. It ensures that the NR iteration consistently converges and adheres to physical constraints. Given the extreme nonlinearity and complexity of the iterative function, the theoretical analysis is highly nontrivial and technical. We discover a pivotal inequality for delineating the convexity and concavity of the iterative function and establish theories to guarantee the PCP property and convergence. We also develop theories to determine a computable initial guess within a theoretical "safe" interval. Intriguingly, we find that the unique positive root of a cubic polynomial always falls within this interval. Our PCP NR method is versatile and can be seamlessly integrated into any RMHD scheme that requires the recovery of primitive variables, potentially leading to a broad impact in this field. As an application, we incorporate it into a discontinuous Galerkin method, resulting in fully PCP schemes. In this paper, a fifth-order moment-based Hermite weighted essentially non-oscillatory scheme with unified stencils (termed as HWENO-U) is proposed for hyperbolic conservation laws. The main idea of the HWENO-U scheme is to modify the first-order moment by a HWENO limiter only in the time discretizations using the same information of spatial reconstructions, in which the limiter not only overcomes spurious oscillations well, but also ensures the stability of the fully-discrete scheme. For the HWENO reconstructions, a new scale-invariant nonlinear weight is designed by incorporating only the integral average values of the solution, which keeps all properties of the original one while is more robust for simulating challenging problems with sharp scale variations. Compared with previous HWENO schemes, the advantages of the HWENO-U scheme are: (1) a simpler implemented process involving only a single HWENO reconstruction applied throughout the entire procedures without any modifications for the governing equations; (2) increased efficiency by utilizing the same candidate stencils, reconstructed polynomials, and linear and nonlinear weights in both the HWENO limiter and spatial reconstructions; (3) reduced problem-specific dependencies and improved rationality, as the nonlinear weights are identical for the function $u$ and its non-zero multiple $\zeta u$. Besides, the proposed scheme retains the advantages of previous HWENO schemes, including compact reconstructed stencils and the utilization of artificial linear weights. The relativistic hydrodynamics (RHD) equations have three crucial intrinsic physical constraints on the primitive variables: positivity of pressure and density, and subluminal fluid velocity. However, numerical simulations can violate these constraints, leading to nonphysical results or even simulation failure. Designing genuinely physical-constraint-preserving (PCP) schemes is very difficult, as the primitive variables cannot be explicitly reformulated using conservative variables due to relativistic effects. In this paper, we propose three efficient Newton--Raphson (NR) methods for robustly recovering primitive variables from conservative variables. Importantly, we rigorously prove that these NR methods are always convergent and PCP, meaning they preserve the physical constraints throughout the NR iterations. The discovery of these robust NR methods and their PCP convergence analyses are highly nontrivial and technical. As an application, we apply the proposed NR methods to design PCP finite volume Hermite weighted essentially non-oscillatory (HWENO) schemes for solving the RHD equations. Our PCP HWENO schemes incorporate high-order HWENO reconstruction, a PCP limiter, and strong-stability-preserving time discretization. We rigorously prove the PCP property of the fully discrete schemes using convex decomposition techniques. Moreover, we suggest the characteristic decomposition with rescaled eigenvectors and scale-invariant nonlinear weights to enhance the performance of the HWENO schemes in simulating large-scale RHD problems. Several demanding numerical tests are conducted to demonstrate the robustness, accuracy, and high resolution of the proposed PCP HWENO schemes and to validate the efficiency of our NR methods., Comment: 49 pages

In this paper, a compact and high order ADER (Arbitrary high order using DERivatives) scheme using the simple HWENO method (ADER-SHWENO) is proposed for hyperbolic conservation laws. The newly-developed method employs the Lax-Wendroff procedure to convert time derivatives to spatial derivatives, which provides the time evolution of the variables at the cell interfaces. This information is required for the simple HWENO reconstructions, which take advantages of the simple WENO and the classic HWENO. Compared with the original Runge-Kutta HWENO method (RK-HWENO), the new method has two advantages. Firstly, RK-HWENO method must solve the additional equations for reconstructions, which is avoided for the new method. Secondly, the SHWENO reconstruction is performed once with one stencil and is different from the classic HWENO methods, in which both the function and its derivative values are reconstructed with two different stencils, respectively. Thus the new method is more efficient than the RK-HWENO method. Moreover, the new method is more compact than the existing ADER-WENO method. Besides, the new method makes the best use of the information in the ADER method. Thus, the time evolution of the cell averages of the derivatives is simpler than that developed in the work [Li et. al., 447 (2021), 110661.]. Numerical tests indicate that the new method can achieve high order for smooth solutions both in space and time, keep non-oscillatory at discontinuities.

We present fourth-order conservative non-splitting semi-Lagrangian (SL) Hermite essentially non-oscillatory (HWENO) schemes for linear transport equations with applications for nonlinear problems including the Vlasov-Poisson system, the guiding center Vlasov model, and the incompressible Euler equations in the vorticity-stream function formulation. The proposed SL HWENO schemes combine a weak formulation of the characteristic Galerkin method with two newly constructed HWENO reconstruction methods. Fourth-order accuracy is accomplished in both space and time under a non-splitting setting. Mass conservation naturally holds due to the weak formulation of the characteristic Galerkin method and the design of the HWENO reconstructions. We apply a positive-preserving limiter to maintain the positivity of numerical solutions when needed. Although the proposed SL framework allows us to take large time steps for improving computational efficiency, it also brings challenges to the spatial reconstruction technique; we construct two kind of novel HWENO reconstructions to fit the need for the proposed SL framework. Abundant benchmark tests are performed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed SL HWENO schemes.

A well-balanced moving mesh discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method is proposed for the numerical solution of the Ripa model -- a generalization of the shallow water equations that accounts for effects of water temperature variations. Thermodynamic processes are important particularly in the upper layers of the ocean where the variations of sea surface temperature play a fundamental role in climate change. The well-balance property which requires numerical schemes to preserve the lake-at-rest steady state is crucial to the simulation of perturbation waves over that steady state such as waves on a lake or tsunami waves in the deep ocean. To ensure the well-balance, positivity-preserving, and high-order properties, a DG-interpolation scheme (with or without scaling positivity-preserving limiter) and special treatments pertaining to the Ripa model are employed in the transfer of both the flow variables and bottom topography from the old mesh to the new one and in the TVB limiting process. Mesh adaptivity is realized using an MMPDE moving mesh approach and a metric tensor based on an equilibrium variable and water depth. A motivation is to adapt the mesh according to both the perturbations of the lake-at-rest steady state and the water depth distribution (bottom structure). In this paper, a high-order moment-based multi-resolution Hermite weighted essentially non-oscillatory (HWENO) scheme is designed for hyperbolic conservation laws. The main idea of this scheme is derived from our previous work [J. Comput. Phys., 446 (2021) 110653], in which the integral averages of the function and its first order derivative are used to reconstruct both the function and its first order derivative values at the boundaries. However, in this paper, only the function values at the Gauss-Lobatto points in the one or two dimensional case need to be reconstructed by using the information of the zeroth and first order moments. In addition, an extra modification procedure is used to modify those first order moments in the troubled-cells, which leads to an improvement of stability and an enhancement of resolution near discontinuities. To obtain the same order of accuracy, the size of the stencil required by this moment-based multi-resolution HWENO scheme is still the same as the general HWENO scheme and is more compact than the general WENO scheme. Moreover, the linear weights can also be any positive numbers as long as their sum equals one and the CFL number can still be 0.6 whether for the one or two dimensional case. The selection of time step plays a crucial role in improving stability and efficiency in the Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) solution of hyperbolic conservation laws on adaptive moving meshes that typically employs explicit stepping. A commonly used selection of time step is a direct extension based on Courant-Friedrichs-Levy (CFL) conditions established for fixed and uniform meshes. In this work, we provide a mathematical justification for those time step selection strategies used in practical adaptive DG computations. A stability analysis is presented for a moving mesh DG method for linear scalar conservation laws. Based on the analysis, a new selection strategy of the time step is proposed, which takes into consideration the coupling of the $\alpha$-function (that is related to the eigenvalues of the Jacobian matrix of the flux and the mesh movement velocity) and the heights of the mesh elements. The analysis also suggests several stable combinations of the choices of the $\alpha$-function in the numerical scheme and in the time step selection. Numerical results obtained with a moving mesh DG method for Burgers' and Euler equations are presented. In this paper, we combine the nonlinear HWENO reconstruction in \cite{newhwenozq} and the fixed-point iteration with Gauss-Seidel fast sweeping strategy, to solve the static Hamilton-Jacobi equations in a novel HWENO framework recently developed in \cite{mehweno1}. The proposed HWENO frameworks enjoys several advantages. First, compared with the traditional HWENO framework, the proposed methods do not need to introduce additional auxiliary equations to update the derivatives of the unknown function $\phi$. They are now computed from the current value of $\phi$ and the previous spatial derivatives of $\phi$. This approach saves the computational storage and CPU time, which greatly improves the computational efficiency of the traditional HWENO scheme. In addition, compared with the traditional WENO method, reconstruction stencil of the HWENO methods becomes more compact, their boundary treatment is simpler, and the numerical errors are smaller on the same mesh. Second, the fixed-point fast sweeping method is used to update the numerical approximation. It is an explicit method and does not involve the inverse operation of nonlinear Hamiltonian, therefore any Hamilton-Jacobi equations with complex Hamiltonian can be solved easily. It also resolves some known issues, including that the iterative number is very sensitive to the parameter $\varepsilon$ used in the nonlinear weights, as observed in previous studies. Finally, in order to further reduce the computational cost, a hybrid strategy is also presented. In this paper, we develop a high order residual distribution (RD) method for solving steady state conservation laws in a novel Hermite weighted essentially non-oscillatory (HWENO) framework recently developed in [24]. In particular, we design a high order HWENO integration for the integrals of source term and fluxes based on the point value of the solution and its spatial derivatives, and the principles of residual distribution schemes are adapted to obtain steady state solutions. Two advantages of the novel HWENO framework have been shown in [24]: first, compared with the traditional HWENO framework, the proposed method does not need to introduce additional auxiliary equations to update the derivatives of the unknown variable, and just compute them from the current point value of the solution and its old spatial derivatives, which saves the computational storage and CPU time, and thereby improve the computational efficiency of the traditional HWENO framework. Second, compared with the traditional WENO method, reconstruction stencil of the HWENO methods becomes more compact, their boundary treatment is simpler, and the numerical errors are smaller at the same grid. Thus, it is also a compact scheme when we design the higher order accuracy, compared with that in [11] Chou and Shu proposed. In this paper, we propose to combine the fifth order Hermite weighted essentially non-oscillatory (HWENO) scheme and fast sweeping method (FSM) for the solution of the steady-state $S_{N}$ transport equation in the finite volume framework. It is well-known that the $S_{N}$ transport equation asymptotically converges to a macroscopic diffusion equation in the limit of optically thick systems with small absorption and sources. Numerical methods which can preserve the asymptotic limit are referred to as asymptotic preserving methods. In the one-dimensional case, we provide the analysis to demonstrate the asymptotic preserving property of the high order finite volume HWENO method, by showing that its cell-edge and cell-average fluxes possess the thick diffusion limit. Numerical results in both one- and two- dimensions are presented to validate its asymptotic preserving property. A hybrid strategy to compute the nonlinear weights in the HWENO reconstruction is introduced to save computational cost. Extensive one- and two-dimensional numerical experiments are performed to verify the accuracy, asymptotic preserving property and positivity of the proposed HWENO FSM.

A high-order quasi-conservative discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method is proposed for the numerical simulation of compressible multi-component flows. A distinct feature of the method is a predictor-corrector strategy to define the grid velocity. A Lagrangian mesh is first computed based on the flow velocity and then used as an initial mesh in a moving mesh method (the moving mesh partial differential equation or MMPDE method ) to improve its quality. The fluid dynamic equations are discretized in the direct arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian framework using DG elements and the non-oscillatory kinetic flux while the species equation is discretized using a quasi-conservative DG scheme to avoid numerical oscillations near material interfaces. A selection of one- and two-dimensional examples are presented to verify the convergence order and the constant-pressure-velocity preservation property of the method. They also demonstrate that the incorporation of the Lagrangian meshing with the MMPDE moving mesh method works well to concentrate mesh points in regions of shocks and material interfaces., Comment: 44 pages, 71 figures

In this paper, we propose a novel Hermite weighted essentially non-oscillatory (HWENO) fast sweeping method to solve the static Hamilton-Jacobi equations efficiently. During the HWENO reconstruction procedure, the proposed method is built upon a new finite difference fifth order HWENO scheme involving one big stencil and two small stencils. However, one major novelty and difference from the traditional HWENO framework lies in the fact that, we do not need to introduce and solve any additional equations to update the derivatives of the unknown function $\phi$. Instead, we use the current $\phi$ and the old spatial derivative of $\phi$ to update them. The traditional HWENO fast sweeping method is also introduced in this paper for comparison, where additional equations governing the spatial derivatives of $\phi$ are introduced. The novel HWENO fast sweeping methods are shown to yield great savings in both computational time and storage, which improves the computational efficiency of the traditional HWENO scheme. In addition, a hybrid strategy is also introduced to further reduce computational costs. Extensive numerical experiments are provided to validate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed approaches.

In this paper, we develop a simplified hybrid weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) method combined with the modified ghost fluid method (MGFM) [28] to simulate the compressible two-medium flow problems. The MGFM can turn the two-medium flow problems into two single-medium cases by defining the ghost fluids status in terms of the predicted the interface status, which makes the material interface "invisible". For the single medium flow case, we adapt between the linear upwind scheme and the WENO scheme automatically by identifying the regions of the extreme points for the reconstruction polynomial as same as the hybrid WENO scheme [50]. Instead of calculating their exact locations, we only need to know the regions of the extreme points based on the zero point existence theorem, which is simpler for implementation and saves computation time. Meanwhile, it still keeps the robustness and has high efficiency. A high-order, well-balanced, positivity-preserving quasi-Lagrange moving mesh DG method is presented for the shallow water equations with non-flat bottom topography. The well-balance property is crucial to the ability of a scheme to simulate perturbation waves over the lake-at-rest steady state such as waves on a lake or tsunami waves in the deep ocean. The method combines a quasi-Lagrange moving mesh DG method, a hydrostatic reconstruction technique, and a change of unknown variables. The strategies in the use of slope limiting, positivity-preservation limiting, and change of variables to ensure the well-balance and positivity-preserving properties are discussed. Compared to rezoning-type methods, the current method treats mesh movement continuously in time and has the advantages that it does not need to interpolate flow variables from the old mesh to the new one and places no constraint for the choice of an update scheme for the bottom topography on the new mesh. In this paper, a high order quasi-conservative discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method using the non-oscillatory kinetic flux is proposed for the 5-equation model of compressible multi-component flows with Mie-Gr\"uneisen equation of state. The method mainly consists of three steps: firstly, the DG method with the non-oscillatory kinetic flux is used to solve the conservative equations of the model; secondly, inspired by Abgrall's idea, we derive a DG scheme for the volume fraction equation which can avoid the unphysical oscillations near the material interfaces; finally, a multi-resolution WENO limiter and a maximum-principle-satisfying limiter are employed to ensure oscillation-free near the discontinuities, and preserve the physical bounds for the volume fraction, respectively. Numerical tests show that the method can achieve high order for smooth solutions and keep non-oscillatory at discontinuities. A rezoning-type adaptive moving mesh discontinuous Galerkin method is proposed for the numerical solution of the shallow water equations with non-flat bottom topography. The well-balance property is crucial to the simulation of perturbation waves over the lake-at-rest steady state such as waves on a lake or tsunami waves in the deep ocean. To ensure the well-balance and positivity-preserving properties, strategies are discussed in the use of slope limiting, positivity-preservation limiting, and data transferring between meshes. Particularly, it is suggested that a DG-interpolation scheme be used for the interpolation of both the flow variables and bottom topography from the old mesh to the new one and after each application of the positivity-preservation limiting on the water depth, a high-order correction be made to the approximation of the bottom topography according to the modifications in the water depth. Moreover, mesh adaptation based on the equilibrium variable and water depth is shown to give more desirable results than that based on the commonly used entropy function. In this paper, a fifth-order Hermite weighted essentially non-oscillatory (HWENO) scheme with artificial linear weights is proposed for one and two dimensional hyperbolic conservation laws, where the zeroth-order and the first-order moments are used in the spatial reconstruction. We construct the HWENO methodology using a nonlinear convex combination of a high degree polynomial with several low degree polynomials, and the associated linear weights can be any artificial positive numbers with only requirement that their summation equals one. The one advantage of the HWENO scheme is its simplicity and easy extension to multi-dimension in engineering applications for we can use any artificial linear weights which are independent on geometry of mesh. The another advantage is its higher order numerical accuracy using less candidate stencils for two dimensional problems. In addition, the HWENO scheme still keeps the compactness as only immediate neighbor information is needed in the reconstruction and has high efficiency for directly using linear approximation in the smooth regions. In order to avoid nonphysical oscillations nearby strong shocks or contact discontinuities, we adopt the thought of limiter for discontinuous Galerkin method to control the spurious oscillations. Solution interpolation between deforming meshes is an important component for several applications in scientific computing, including indirect arbitrary-Lagrangian-Eulerian and rezoning moving mesh methods in numerical solution of partial differential equations. In this paper, a high-order, conservative, and positivity-preserving interpolation scheme is developed based on the discontinuous Galerkin solution of a linear time-dependent equation on deforming meshes. The scheme works for bounded but otherwise arbitrary mesh deformation from the old mesh to the new one. The cost and positivity preservation (with a linear scaling limiter) of the DG-interpolation are investigated. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the properties of the interpolation scheme. The DG-interpolation is applied to the rezoning moving mesh DG solution of the radiative transfer equation, an integro-differential equation modeling the conservation of photons and involving time, space, and angular variables. Numerical results obtained for examples in one and two spatial dimensions with various settings show that the resulting rezoning moving mesh DG method maintains the same convergence order as the standard DG method, is more efficient than the method with a fixed uniform mesh, and is able to preserve the positivity of the radiative intensity., Comment: 28 pages

In this paper, we propose a hybrid finite volume Hermite weighted essentially non-oscillatory (HWENO) scheme for solving one and two dimensional hyperbolic conservation laws. The zeroth-order and the first-order moments are used in the spatial reconstruction, with total variation diminishing Runge-Kutta time discretization. The main idea of the hybrid HWENO scheme is that we first use a shock-detection technique to identify the troubled cell, then, if the cell is identified as a troubled cell, we would modify the first order moment in the troubled cell and employ HWENO reconstruction in spatial discretization; otherwise, we directly use high order linear reconstruction. Unlike other HWENO schemes, we borrow the thought of limiter for discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method to control the spurious oscillations, after this procedure, the scheme would avoid the oscillations by using HWENO reconstruction nearby discontinuities and have higher efficiency for using linear approximation straightforwardly in the smooth regions. In addition, the hybrid HWENO scheme still keeps the compactness. A collection of benchmark numerical tests for one and two dimensional cases are performed to demonstrate the numerical accuracy, high resolution and robustness of the proposed scheme., Comment: 38 pages

A moving mesh discontinuous Galerkin method is presented for the numerical solution of hyperbolic conservation laws. The method is a combination of the discontinuous Galerkin method and the mesh movement strategy which is based on the moving mesh partial differential equation approach and moves the mesh continuously in time and orderly in space. It discretizes hyperbolic conservation laws on moving meshes in the quasi-Lagrangian fashion with which the mesh movement is treated continuously and no interpolation is needed for physical variables from the old mesh to the new one. Two convection terms are induced by the mesh movement and their discretization is incorporated naturally in the DG formulation. Numerical results for a selection of one- and two-dimensional scalar and system conservation laws are presented. It is shown that the moving mesh DG method achieves the theoretically predicted order of convergence for problems with smooth solutions and is able to capture shocks and concentrate mesh points in non-smooth regions. Its advantage over uniform meshes and its insensitiveness to mesh smoothness are also demonstrated., Comment: 41 pages

In this paper, we propose a high order residual distribution conservative finite difference scheme for solving steady state conservation laws. A new type of WENO (weighted essentially non-oscillatory) termed as WENO-ZQ integration is used to compute the numerical fluxes and source term based on the point values of the solution, and the principles of residual distribution schemes are adapted to obtain steady state solutions. Extensive numerical examples in both scalar and system test problems in one and two dimensions demonstrate the efficiency, high order accuracy and the capability of resolving shocks of the proposed methods.

The radiative transfer equation models the interaction of radiation with scattering and absorbing media and has important applications in various fields in science and engineering. It is an integro-differential equation involving time, space and angular variables and contains an integral term in angular directions while being hyperbolic in space. The challenges for its numerical solution include the needs to handle with its high dimensionality, the presence of the integral term, and the development of discontinuities and sharp layers in its solution along spatial directions. Its numerical solution is studied in this paper using an adaptive moving mesh discontinuous Galerkin method for spatial discretization together with the discrete ordinate method for angular discretization. The former employs a dynamic mesh adaptation strategy based on moving mesh partial differential equations to improve computational accuracy and efficiency. A moving mesh finite difference method based on the moving mesh partial differential equation is proposed for the numerical solution of the 2T model for multi-material, non-equilibrium radiation diffusion equations. The model involves nonlinear diffusion coefficients and its solutions stay positive for all time when they are positive initially. Nonlinear diffusion and preservation of solution positivity pose challenges in the numerical solution of the model. A coefficient-freezing predictor-corrector method is used for nonlinear diffusion while a cutoff strategy with a positive threshold is used to keep the solutions positive. Furthermore, a two-level moving mesh strategy and a sparse matrix solver are used to improve the efficiency of the computation. Numerical results for a selection of examples of multi-material non-equilibrium radiation diffusion show that the method is capable of capturing the profiles and local structures of Marshak waves with adequate mesh concentration. The obtained numerical solutions are in good agreement with those in the existing literature.
