6. Effects of exercises based on the Pilates method practiced on portable equipment by elderly women with chronic low back pain: a randomized clinical trial

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of exercises based on the Pilates method in portable equipment, pain intensity, quality of life, and functional capacity of elderly women with chronic low back pain. This is a randomized clinical trial, lasting 12 weeks, with one group performing the exercises on portable equipment (G1) and the other on traditional equipment in Pilates studio (G2). The trial included elderly women, with complaints of pain in the lumbar region for more than three months. In the pre-and post-intervention moments, the intensity of low back pain, disability related to painful symptomatology of the lumbar region, quality of life and functional capacity. The main results were that the practice of exercises based on the method with portable equipment by elderly women allowed the reduction of pain intensity (G1: p<0.001), improved quality of life in terms of pain domains (p =0.01), and social aspects (p=0.01), as well as functional capacity, considering the forearm flexion strength test (p=0.00), the sit-and-reach the feet flexibility test (p=0.03), and back-reach flexibility test (p=0.02). When compared between groups, no significant differences were observed (p≥ 0.05). The results indicate that the practice of exercises based on the Pilates method with portable equipment has a positive impact, particularly on painful symptoms, and can promote the health of elderly women with low back pain and be used as another low-cost therapeutic resource., Este estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar los efectos de los ejercicios basados en el método Pilates en equipos portátiles, la intensidad del dolor, la calidad de vida y la capacidad funcional de mujeres ancianas con dolor lumbar crónico. Se trata de un ensayo clínico aleatorizado, con una duración de 12 semanas, con un grupo realizando los ejercicios en equipo portátil (G1) y el otro en equipo tradicional en estudio de Pilates (G2). El ensayo incluyó a mujeres ancianas, con quejas de dolor en la región lumbar durante más de tres meses. En los momentos pre y postintervención, la intensidad del dolor lumbar, la discapacidad relacionada con la sintomatología dolorosa de la región lumbar, la calidad de vida y la capacidad funcional. Abstract

This paper presents a wireless upgrade program method suitable for mine personnel portable equipment. Taking the miner’s lamp with nRF24L01 wireless chip as an example, the wireless broadcast transmission and breakpoint continuous transmission are adopted to realize the batch wireless upgrade of the portable equipment program of mine personnel at the lower wellhead, which improves the reliability of the upgrade and the operability on site. The field test results show that this method can upgrade the program without affecting the normal use of the equipment. It is an effective way to upgrade the program of portable equipment for mining personnel with high reliability, low maintenance and no impact on safety production.

Abstract

Despite optimistic predictions on the eventual end of COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019), caution is necessary regarding the emergence of new variants to sustain a positive outlook and effectively address any potential future outbreaks. However, ongoing efforts to track COVID-19 variants are concentrated in developed countries and unique social practices and remote habitats of indigenous peoples present additional challenges. By combining small-sized equipment that is easily accessible and inexpensive, we performed SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2) whole genome sequencing and measured the sample-to-answer time and accuracy of this portable variant tracking tool. Our portable design determined the variant of SARS-CoV-2 in an infected individual within 9 hours and 15 minutes without external power or internet connection, surpassing the speed of previous portable tools. It took only 16 minutes to complete sequencing run, whole genome assembly, and lineage determination using a single standalone laptop. We then demonstrated the capability to produce 289 SARS-CoV-2 whole genome sequences in a single portable sequencing run, representing a significant improvement over an existing throughput of 96 sequences per run. We verified the accuracy of portable sequencing by comparison with two other independent sequencing methods. We showed that our high-throughput data consistently represented the circulating variants in Los Angeles, United States, when compared with publicly available sequences. Our scheme is designed to be flexible, rapid, and accurate, making it a valuable tool for large-scale surveillance operations in low- and middle-income countries as well as targeted surveys for vulnerable populations in remote locations.IMPORTANCEThere have been significant efforts to track COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019) variants, accumulating over 15 million SARS-CoV-2 sequences as of 2023. However, the distribution of global survey data is highly skewed, with nearly half of all countries having inadequate or low levels of genomic surveillance. In addition, indigenous peoples face more severe threats from COVID-19, due to their generally remote residence and unique social practices. Cost-effective portable sequencing tools have been used to investigate Ebola and Zika outbreaks. However, these tools have a sample-to-answer time of around 24 hours and require an internet connection for data transfer to an off-site cloud server. In our study, we rapidly determined COVID-19 variants using only small and inexpensive equipment, with a completion time of 9 hours and 15 minutes. Furthermore, we produced 289 near-full-length SARS-CoV-2 genome sequences from a single portable Nanopore sequencing run, representing a threefold increase in throughput compared with existing Nanopore sequencing methods., Competing Interests: All authors declare no competing interests.
