Using examples from classical literature, with Faust being the ultimate horror of unending physical torment, Huckvale draws upon Marie Guillot to argue that what we know best of all is the body since it is our sole instrument for understanding the world (p. 13). Various depictions of bodily torment in films serve to illustrate our angst when said instrument malfunctions or is destroyed, as each chapter of Huckvale’s book engages with various possible scenarios for malfunction and/or annihilation: copulation, generation, digestion, mutilation, infection, mutation, disintegration, extinction – all ways to deform, change, or annihilate the corporeal cage in which a human is imprisoned.

Straipsnyje, remiantis Merleau-Ponty kūno filosofija, analizuojamas intersubjektyvus gyvenamasis pasaulis ir kūno išgyvenamas laikas. Filosofija kūnu susidomėjo antikoje ir visais istoriniais periodais yra siūlomos įvairios interpretacijos. Psichologijoje išskiriamas žmogaus ego (vidinių patirčių visuma) ir kūnas, priklausantis išoriniam pasauliui. Fenomenologai analizuoja Aš ir Kito arba savo ir svetimo santykį. Dualistinę žmogaus koncepciją Naujaisiais amžiais įtvirtino prancūzų filosofas, matematikas ir fizikas René Descartes’as, nubrėžęs gaires moderniam subjektyvizmui. Jis išskyrė dvi substancijų rūšis: materialias (kūniškas) ir nematerialias (dvasines), kurios randasi žmoguje. Apibūdindamas save kaip mąstantį daiktą, Descartes teigia substancinę žmogaus kūno ir sielos vienovę. Žmogaus substancinė kūno ir sielos vienovė nereiškia jų tapatumo, nes siela daro jį tuo, kuo jis yra. Mąstymas yra sielos esmė, įtvirtina subjekto prioritetą pažinimo procese ir suteikia jam viršenybę nuosavo kūno atžvilgiu. Descartes antropologija vertinama įvairiai. Dėl dualistinio požiūrio Descartes susilaukė kritikos iš Martino Buberio, Jeano-Paulio Sartre'o, Maurice Merleau-Ponty ir kt. Straipsnyje pagrindinis dėmesys skiriamas Merleau- Ponty kūno filosofijai, nes jis atvėrė visiškai naujas kūno egzistavimo erdves. Merleau-Ponty žmogaus kūną tiria iš fenomenologinės perspektyvos, t.y. kūnas randasi gyvenamajame pasaulyje. Jis teigia, kad ne sąmonė, o žmogaus „nuosavas kūnas“ apsprendžia egzistenciją t.y. jo būties buvimo būdą pasaulyje. Būtis traktuojama kaip konkreti, gyva, kūniška arba, kitaip tariant, ne mąstanti, o įsikūnijusi sąmonė. Fenomenologijos pagalba Merleau-Ponty parodo sąmonės įsikūnijimą, t. y. atskleidžia kūno sąmoningumą. Pasak G. Šmitienės, Merleau-Ponty įvykdė juslinio suvokimo perversmą filosofijoje, atskleisdamas kad jusliniame suvokime veikia įkūnyta sąmonė arba sąmoningas kūnas, kad juslinis suvokimas – tai sintezės, neatskiriamos nuo atminties, vaizduotės ir daugybės kitų sąmonės procesų. Gyvenamasis kūnas yra bendravimo instrumentas, kurio pagalba ne tik pažįstame gamtą ir kūnus, bet taip pat įgyjame galimybę susitikti ir bendrauti su kitais. Žmogus yra kūnas, kuris įtraukiamas į santykius su kitais kūnais ir šių santykių dėka žmogus įvaldo kūną ir pažįsta ne tik gamtinę, bet ir socialinę aplinką. Atsisakęs tradicinės subjekto ir objekto perskyros, Merleau-Ponty teigia, kad intersubjektyvūs santykiai skleidžiasi įvairių realijų susipynusioje terpėje, kurioje dingsta atskiri pasaulio dalykai, kadangi žmogus ir pasaulis yra vieno kūno nariai. Tirdamas žmonių komunikaciją, Merleau-Ponty jos vyksme įžvelgė žmonių gebėjimą artikuliuoti pasaulį. Komunikacija su pasauliu vyksta nenutrūkstamai, nes pasaulis yra gyvas, kuriame esantys daiktai nuolat atsiveria nauju egzistencijos geismu, įtraukdami mąstantį Ego į gyvenimo įvykį. Intersubjektyvūs santykiai suponuoja kūno dvilypumą: tuo pat metu kūnas patiria kitą ir save. Subjekto sąveika su pasauliu, pasak Merleau-Ponty, gimdo laiką. Laiko analizė – tai patekimas į konkrečią subjektyvybės, reprezentuojančios subjektą, struktūrą. Laikas priskiriamas intencionalumų tinklui. Intencionalumas – tai sąmonės nukreiptumas į objektą, t. y. jos būsenos arba išgyvenimai. Laikas turi pereinamąjį judėjimo pobūdį per praeities ir ateities skirtumą dabartyje. Merleau-Ponty kūno filosofija atskleidžia subjektiškumo sritį, kurioje reiškiasi tarpasmeniniai santykiai, jausmai, mąstymas, juslinės funkcijos, kalba, ir kt. Visa tai yra egzistencijos pagrindas, atsiveriantis žmogui gyvame kūniškame pasaulyje. On the basis of Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy of body, the article analyses the intersubjective life-world and the time experienced by a body. The consciousness and duality of a body are revealed: a body simultaneously experiences the other and itself. The article discusses a unity of a physical body and an incarnate consciousness, which reveals itself in certain lifelike situation at each point in time, a sensual perception of which each time provides new knowledge and further opens up the world. The article shows that Merleau-Ponty brought a revolution of sensual perception in philosophy. He revealed that sensual perception consisted of various processes of consciousness associated with memory, imagination, feelings and other areas. It is assumed that the reason of the origin of time is the interaction of a subject with things. Analysis of time is a possibility to access to a concrete structure of subjectivity that represents a subject. Time has a transitional nature of movement through the difference between the past and the future in the present.

The main objective of this article is to show that Nietzsche’s genealogy reveals the semiotic and hermeneutical character of all human activities and that its origin is rooted in the body of the imaginative animal, especially in the poeticizing power of its imagination. Thus is revealed the great signifi cance of Nietzsche’s philosophy of body, which provides a more complete approach for transforming contemporary philosophy, and can also help us to move past current neurophilosophy.

This article suggests a repositioning of philosophy’s disciplinary boundaries in terms of the analyses of ancient Greek philosophy carried out late in the career of Michel Foucault, which, under the influence of Pierre Hadot’s conception of philosophy as a way of life, set out to highlight "the care of the self" as the practical core of the Ancient philosophical enterprise. In light of this shift in disciplinary boundaries, the article seeks to deepen the ongoing reconsideration of Ab? H?mid Muhammad ibn Muhammad al-Ghaz?l?’s position vis-à-vis philosophy by highlighting the role of the body and self-care in his ethical writing. Though recent scholarship has come to reject the notion that Ghaz?l? simply did away with philosophy in Islam, even the studies of his constructive incorporation of Avicennan thought have stopped short of highlighting bodily discipline as a central feature of spiritual exercise across these categories.

In this paper, I shall discuss Nishida’s 西田 philosophy of body from the aspects of acting intuition, rhythm, and situatedness. Pure experience used to be the starting point of Nishida’s early philosophy. In his later philosophy, however, the keyword in Nishida’s philosophy is no longer “experience” but “acting.” It is neither “I think therefore I am” nor “I will therefore I am,” but “I act therefore I am.” As the organ of acting intuition, body is one of the most important philosophical concepts in Nishida’s later philosophy. I shall interpret the philosophy of acting intuition as a phenomenology of rhythm. Also, I shall argue that acting intuition can be understood as a situated action. For Nishida, our body is historical: I am not a knowing body, but an acting body.

Philosophy’s essence depicted by Socrates lies in its role as pedagogy for living, yet its traditional treatment of ‘body’ as a hindrance to ‘knowledge’ in fact severs it from life, transforming it into ‘an escape from life’ (James, 1978, p. 18).The philosophy/life dichotomy is thus an inherent flaw preventing philosophy as traditionally taught and engaged in, from fulfilling its original goal. Recent rejections of the Cartesian nature of Western curriculum, such as O’Loughlin’s ‘Embodiment and Education: Exploring creatural existence’ (2006), constitute an important theoretical paradigm shift, yet still fail to translate to substantial pedagogies which explore the ‘body’ and its relation to ‘mind’ directly. This article suggests a reorientation of philosophy teaching from its present disembodied pedagogy, towards an embodied-lived-philosophicalpractice. Chinese-American choreographer Shen Wei recontextualizes his dancers as visual artists in his piece, Connect Transfer. This paper explores the various versions of this choreographic work as representations of Chinese philosophy, particularly the concepts of qi, wuwei, and yin-yang, through an investigation of the unique movement vocabulary and aesthetic created by the dancers’ role as calligraphers.
