2. Academic Engagement in Sport for Development: Niche or Growing Community?

Abstract

Over the last two decades, the sport for development (SFD) sector has grown significantly, and there has been a concurrent increase in research and educational activities to support the field. In particular, academic institutions are taking a more significant role, contributing to a growing body of literature and developing numerous SFD-specific courses. Despite these initiatives and the important role assigned to academia, academic activities related to SFD have remained fragmented along geographic or disciplinary lines, and our knowledge of academic activities and collaborations is limited and focused on actors in the Global North. This study seeks to address these gaps and, through an international survey of academic institutions, aims to (1) establish the teaching, research and partnership activities within and between academic institutions around the globe; and (2) identify challenges and inform solutions for greater cooperation within and between academic institutions in the SFD context. Overall, our results show that the SFD is a highly multidisciplinary field involving institutions from a perhaps wider-than-expected range of countries. However, funding, support and recognition of SFD and associated academic actors, especially in the Global South, remains limited. To conclude, we propose potential ways forward to address some of these issues.

Abstract

Sport for development (SFD) initiatives have faced numerous criticisms around the focus on individual-level (micro) outcomes and lack of integration at the community (meso) and structural (macro) levels. As a result, there is growing recognition that programmes need to find ways to work with and engage a wide range of community members and stakeholders through more inclusive, participatory approaches. One such approach is known as Living Labs. In the following conceptual article, we present the Sport and Social Cohesion Lab (SSCL) project, which implemented a Living Lab approach in various sport-based programmes from four different European countries. The main components of the Living Lab framework are presented, and practical insights are derived from the project. In addition, the unique and sometimes critical role of sport is reflected upon in relation to the Living Lab context. Through this, this article provides practitioners and academics with potential building blocks to implement Living Labs and/or embed participatory approaches in sport and physical activity contexts and social settings more generally.

Abstract

Violence and maltreatment in sport threaten athlete rights and undermine sport's potential contribution to positive social development. This problem remains prevalent in organised sport and limits sport's potential social contribution. In response, numerous European and international actors have pursued activities to address this serious issue. In particular, for more than two decades, the Council of Europe (CoE) has played an active role in promoting and supporting safeguarding policy in sport. However, though extensive time and resources have been invested in these actions, their extent and impact remain unclear. Therefore, using the Council of Europe's Start to Talk initiative as a case, we aim to analyse the inputs, activities, and policy outcomes of their work around safeguarding policy in sport. In turn, this will allow us to identify successes, challenges and future directions for European policy activities. We rely on document analysis and more than 20 semi-structured qualitative interviews with national and international experts to generate our results. Based on this, we find that the CoE has helped politically legitimise action on this topic and has helped generate engagement with policymakers and the public. However, a broader lack of policy monitoring, especially at the systems and target population levels, restricts further progress and development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

From an economic and political perspective, the sport sector is of particular importance and provides many opportunities for sport education. The general transformation of the education sector in European countries represents likewise challenges and opportunities for sport. This chapter aims to systematise the qualification landscape in sport and to discuss the challenges and opportunities of the sports qualification systems with the focus on sport management and coaching. Three dimensions for systematising the sports qualification landscape are identified: (1) job category, (2) occupational level, and (3) qualification provider. Following this approach, the challenges and opportunities for the sports qualification systems are discussed. The chapter also deals with the employability of sport managers and coaches and concludes with future developments and challenges for providing high-quality qualifications in sport.

Abstract

Participation in sport can positively impact young lives by promoting social development and also physical and mental health and well-being. However, several challenges related to sport participation still exist, such as dropout, health risks related to overtraining, and misconceptions about what evidence-based sport coaching knowledge is. The present chapter critically discusses the scientific and cultural premises on which current coach education in sport is based and offers reflections on how this education can be developed and improved. We suggest that current sports science models, characterised by separate siloes of knowledge, may limit holistic approaches to sports coaching. Additionally, these systems of knowledge are created by power dynamics that are explicitly and implicitly valued in coach education, leading to the production of normative ideas about sports coaching and athlete development. This limited view may lead to blind spots in coach expertise development and hinder the improvement of coaching and coach education. We conclude by sharing some ideas that may contribute to the transformation of coach education through the design of more transdisciplinary approaches in coaching courses.

Abstract

Background: High workload can be associated with patient acuity and long hospital stay, often calling for semi-intensive nursing care. Objective: To assess the workload of a nursing team of a hospital inpatient unit using the Nursing Activities Score (NAS). Methodology: An exploratory, cross-sectional, quantitative study was conducted with patients admitted to a hospital inpatient unit. The sample was characterized using sociodemographic and clinical data, and the NAS was used to collect data from documented nursing records. Results: The mean NAS score was 43.2, ranging from 59.0 to 54.1 for the first day and the last day of hospitalization, respectively, which is the average nursing care time. Patients who died and those who showed a positive culture for multidrug-resistant bacteria had higher mean NAS scores on the last day. Conclusion: The nursing workload is high, evidenced by the high demand for care., Marco contextual: La elevada carga de trabajo puede estar asociada a la complejidad clínica de los pacientes y a la larga estancia en la unidad, lo que supone un tratamiento de enfermería a menudo basado en cuidados semiintensivos. Objetivo: Evaluar la carga de trabajo de un equipo de enfermería en una unidad de internamiento hospitalario a través del Nursing Activities Score (NAS). Metodología: Estudio exploratorio, transversal y cuantitativo, realizado con pacientes ingresados en una unidad de internamiento hospitalario. La forma de caracterización compuesta por datos sociodemográficos, clínicos y el NAS se utilizó para recoger datos de registros documentados de cuidados de enfermería. Resultados: El promedio del NAS fue de 43,2, variando entre 59,0 y 54,1 el primer día y el último día de hospitalización respectivamente, y este es el tiempo promedio en que un paciente necesita a un enfermero. Además, los pacientes que terminaron muriendo y aquellos que mostraron un cultivo positivo de gérmenes multirresistentes tuvieron en el NAS medias más altas el último día., Enquadramento: A elevada carga de trabalho pode estar associada à complexidade clínica dos doentes e à longa permanência na unidade, constituindo um tratamento de enfermagem frequentemente baseado em cuidados semi-intensivos. Objetivo: Avaliar a carga de trabalho de uma equipa de enfermagem de uma unidade de internamento através do Nursing Activities Score (NAS). Metodologia: Estudo exploratório, transversal, quantitativo, realizado com doentes internados numa unidade de internamento hospitalar. A forma de caracterização composta por dados sociodemográficos, clínicos e o NAS foi usada para recolher dados de registos documentados de cuidados de enfermagem. Resultados: O NAS médio foi de 43,2, variando de 59,0 e 54,1 ao primeiro dia e no último dia de internamento, respetivamente, e este é o tempo médio que um doente necessita de um enfermeiro. Além disso, os pacientes que acabaram por morrer e aqueles que mostraram cultura positiva para germes multirresistentes tiveram médias de NAS mais altas no último dia. Conclusão: A carga de trabalho da equipa de enfermagem é elevada, evidenciada pela elevada procura de cuidados.

Abstract

The present study aimed to identify the scientific evidence of interventions to promote adherence to Standard Precautions among health care workers. It is an integrative review with research of articles carried out in the databases LILACS, Scopus and MEDLINE. A time frame of the last 5 years was used in all searches. For data treatment, the classification of the levels of evidence of each study was carried out through the analysis of its research question. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 18 scientific articles that comprised the review were selected. It was identified that most strategies involved educational interventions or educational interventions with some additional strategy and that most investigations obtained favorable results when comparing educational intervention with no intervention. It is proposed to carry out intervention studies in the Brazilian scenario, with strategies planned based on international investigations, but which also consider the particularities of the reality found in national institutions.

39. Transferencia de atención prehospitalaria entre equipos de salud: revisión integradora

Abstract

Introduction: An effective attention transference allows the continuity of healthcare; however, not many studies in the literature are focused on this important process. Objective: To analyze the available evidence regarding the transference of healthcare attention among healthcare teams at the prehospital stage. Methodology: This is an integrative review. The primary search was conducted on the PubMed, CINAHL, LILACS, and Scopus databases. The sample was constituted by 20 research studies which were further grouped into two categories. Results: The synthesis showed some of the strategies which are used by health teams to standardize the information transmission during the transference of healthcare attention at the prehospital stage. One of these strategies is, while still in the ambulance, the use of checklists to be further be used by the health teams continuing the attention at the hospital. Some related issues included delays in the transference and errors in the communications. Discussion: The use of mnemonics and protocols to improve the transference process is not generalized, and there is consensus that the lack of integration in the communications is a major cause of errors during the attention transference. Conclusion: Achieving an effective healthcare attention transference can be complex due to the several factors. One of these key factors was found to be related to the agreements among healthcare teams and managers., Introdução: As transferências de atenção efetivas permitem satisfazer as necessidades de continuidade do atendimento; porém, poucos estudos se centram em comunicar informação a esse respeito. Objetivo: Analisar a evidência disponível na literatura sobre a transferência do atendimento pré-hospitalar entre equipes de saúde. Metodologia: Revisão integrativa. A busca de estudos primários realizou-se em quatro bases de dados (PubMed, CINAHL, LILACS, Scopus). A amostra consistiu em 20 pesquisas, que se agruparam em duas categorias. Resultados: A síntese da evidência apontou as estratégias empregadas pelas equipes de saúde para estandardizar a comunicação de informação durante a transferência da atenção pré-hospitalar e as circunstâncias que intervém neste momento. Dentre as estratégias salientamos o uso de um formulário de ambulância para utilizar nos serviços que continuarão o atendimento. Circunstâncias intermediárias incluem demoras na transferência e falhas na informação/comunicação. Discussão. O uso de mnemônicos e protocolos para uma melhor transferência não é generalizado, mas existe consenso que a falta de processos de comunicação integrados contribui às falhas no atendimento. Conclusão: As transferências efetivas de atendimento são complexas já que há vários fatores que interferem em seu processo, os quais dependem de negociações e acordos entre as equipes de saúde e os gestores., Introducción: Las transferencias de atención efectivas permiten satisfacer las necesidades de continuidad de la atención; sin embargo, pocos estudios se centran en comunicar información al respecto. Objetivo: Analizar la evidencia disponible en la literatura sobre la transferencia de atención prehospitalaria entre los equipos de salud. Metodología: Revisión integradora. La búsqueda de estudios primarios se realizó en cuatro bases de datos (PubMed, CINAHL, LILACS, Scopus). La muestra consistió en 20 investigaciones, que se agruparon en dos categorías. Resultados: La síntesis de la evidencia indicó las estrategias empleadas por los equipos de salud para estandarizar la comunicación de información durante la transferencia de la atención prehospitalaria y las circunstancias que intervienen en este momento. Entre las estrategias destacamos el uso de un formulario de ambulancia para utilizar en los servicios que continuarán la atención. Las circunstancias intermedias incluyen demoras en la transferencia y fallas en la información/comunicación. Discusión. El uso de mnemónicos y protocolos para una mejor transferencia no es generalizado, pero existe consenso que la falta de procesos de comunicación integrados contribuyen a las fallas en la atención. Conclusión: Las transferencias efectivas de atención son complejas ya que hay varios factores que intervienen en su proceso, los cuales dependen de negociaciones y acuerdos entre los equipos de salud y los gerentes.
