This study assessed the nitrogen nutrition index, morphogenic characteristics and tiller structure of Alexandergrass (Urochloaplantaginea (LINK) Hitch) pasture submitted to different nitrogen (N) levels (zero, 150 or 300 kg ha-1 of N). The experimental design was entirely randomized with repeated measures arrangement. The experimental animals were Angus heifers under rotational stocking grazing method. The number of animals was variable to keep 30±5 cm post-grazing sward height. Nitrogen nutrition index increased linearly according N levels (Ŷ = 59.8 + 0.1216N; P < 0.0001; r²=0.53). The leaf appearance rate adjusted to a positive linear regression model according the thermal sum (TS) with zero of N (Ŷ0N = 0.0077 + 0.0000087TS; P = 0.0308; r² = 0.72) and 150 kg ha-1 of N (Ŷ150N = 0.0020 + 0.000021 TS; P = 0.0022; r² = 0.92). The use of 300 kg ha-1 of N did not alter the leaf appearance rate (0.0124 leaf degree-days-1). The use of up to 300 kg ha-1 of N increases the Alexandergrass nitrogen content. The leaf appearance rate in Alexandergrass is modified using N while the morphogenic characteristics leaf expansion, stem expansion, phyllochron, leaf lifespan, leaf elongation duration and tiller structure are not altered by N utilization. RESUMO: Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o índice de nutrição nitrogenada, as características morfogênicas e a estrutura dos perfilhos de papuã (Urochloa plantaginea (LINK) Hitch) submetidos a diferentes níveis de nitrogênio (N) (zero, 150 ou 300 kg ha-1 de N). O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado com medidas repetidas no tempo. Os animais experimentais foram novilhas Angus em regime de pastejo rotacionado. O número de animais foi variável para manter 30 ± 5 cm de altura do pasto pós-pastejo. O índice de nutrição com nitrogênio aumentou linearmente de acordo com os níveis de N (Ŷ = 59,8 + 0,1216N; P < 0,0001; r² = 0,53). A taxa de aparecimento de folhas ajustou-se ao modelo de regressão linear positiva de acordo com a soma térmica (TS) com zero de N (Ŷ0N = 0,0077 + 0,0000087TS; P = 0,0308; r² = 0,72) e 150 kg ha-1 de N (Ŷ150N = 0,0020 +0,000021 TS; P = 0,0022; r² = 0,92). O uso de 300 kg ha-1 de N não alterou a taxa de aparecimento de folhas (0,0124 folha grau-dia-1). O uso de até 300 kg ha-1 de N aumenta o teor de nitrogênio do papuã. A taxa de aparecimento de folhas em papuã é modificada usando N, enquanto que as características morfogênicas expansão foliar, expansão de colmo, filocrono, duração de vida das folhas, duração da elongação foliar e a estrutura dos perfilhos não são alteradas pela utilização de N.

This work was conducted to study the efficiency of using nitrogen on Alexander Grass (Urochloa plantaginea (Link.) Hitch) through information about the characteristics of the pasture and forage intake of beef heifers. The experiment was carried out at the Federal University of Santa Maria (Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, UFSM) in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, from January to April of 2014. The treatments consisted of doses of zero, 150, or 300 kg/ ha nitrogen (N) in the form of urea. The study used a rotational pasture method and 16 Angus heifers with a mean initial age and body weight (BW) of 15 months and 276 ± 17.4 kg, respectively. Forage intake was evaluated by treating two picketed test heifers with chromium oxide (Cr2O3) for eleven days as an external indicator of fecal production. The experimental design was completely randomized, and the measurements were repeated over time with three treatments and two repetitions per area. Crude protein content was 3.4% higher under 300 kg/ha nitrogen fertilization compared to 150 kg/ ha (18.7%). Independent of the N application rate, the heifers ingested 2.2 ± 0.09 kg DM 100/ kg BW of forage. Nitrogen fertilization of Alexander grass modified the structure of the pasture, increasing the quality and total production of the forage. Heifers pastured on Alexander grass fertilized with 300 kg/ha nitrogen harvested forage with higher levels of crude protein. The structural change in the canopy let the heifers reduce their consumption of forage at the end of the Alexander grass life cycle. El objetivo de este trabajo fue estudiar la eficiencia del uso de nitrógeno en Urochloa plantaginea teniendo en cuenta las características del pasto y la ingesta de forraje de añojos de aptitud cárnica. El trabajo se llevó a cabo en la Universidad Federal de Santa Maria (UFSM) en Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil, de enero a abril de 2014. Los tratamientos consistieron en dosis de 0, 150 ó 300 kg/ha de nitrógeno (N) en forma de urea. El ensayo se realizó con el método de pastoreo rotativo y se emplearon 16 hembras de la raza Angus con una edad inicial media y peso corporal (PC) de 15 meses y 276 ± 17,4 kg, respectivamente. La ingesta de forraje se calculó realizando la prueba del óxido del cromo (Cr2O3) como indicador externo de producción fecal, durante 11 días a 2 animales. El diseño experimental fue aleatorizado con medidas repetidas a lo largo del tiempo con tres tratamientos y dos repeticiones por área. El nivel de proteína bruta fue un 3,4 % mayor en el tratamiento de 300 kg/ha de nitrógeno en comparación con el tratamiento de 150 kg/ha. Independientemente de la tasa de aplicación del N, los animales ingirieron 2,2 ± 0,09 kg MS/100 kg del PV de forraje. La fertilización con nitrógeno modificó el pasto de U. plantaginea, aumentando la calidad y producción total del forraje. El ganado que pastoreó en la zona de pasto de U. plantaginea fertilizada con 300 kg/ha de nitrógeno presentó mayores niveles de proteína bruta. El cambio estructural en la altura del pasto (dosel) permitió que el ganado redujera el consumo de forraje al final del ciclo de vida de U. plantaginea. Hitch) por meio de informações sobre as características da pastagem e do consumo de forragem de novilhas de corte. O experimento foi conduzido na Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (UFSM) em Santa Maria, RS, Brasil, de janeiro a abril de 2014. Os tratamentos consistiram de doses de zero, 150 ou 300 kg/ ha de nitrogênio (N) na forma de ureia. O estudo utilizou o método de pastejo rotativo e 16 novilhas Angus com média de idade inicial e peso corporal (PC) de 15 meses e 276 ± 17,4 kg, respectivamente. O consumo de forragem foi avaliado pelo tratamento de duas novilhas de teste com óxido de cromo (Cr2O3) por onze dias como indicador externo da produção fecal. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado e as medidas foram repetidas ao longo do tempo com três tratamentos e duas repetições por área. O teor de proteína bruta foi 3,4% maior na dose de 300 kg/ha de nitrogênio em comparação com 150 kg/ha (18,7%). Independentemente da taxa de aplicação de N, as novilhas ingeriram 2,2 ± 0,09 kg MS/100 kg de PV de forragem. A fertilização com nitrogênio no papuã modificou a estrutura da pastagem, aumentando a qualidade e a produção total da forragem. Novilhas pastando em papuã adubado com 300 kg/ ha de nitrogênio colheram forragem com maiores teores de proteína bruta. A mudança estrutural no dossel ocasionou a redução do consumo de forragem ao final do ciclo de vida do papuã.

The determination of biomass flows can assist on improving pasture fertilization techniques, contributing to identify the best management methods and, in relation the use of fertilizers. Nitrogen deficiency in pastures can reduce forage production. On the other hand, there is an environmental concern on nitrogen (N) losses when this nutrient is used in excess and this concern guides the search for new grazing systems that optimize its use. Leaf biomass flow, intensity and frequency of defoliation were evaluated in Alexandergrass (Urochloa plantaginea (Link) Hitch) fertilized with Zero, 100, 200 or 300 kg/ha nitrogen (N) as urea. The grazing method was put and take stocking in order to keep the forage mass at 3,000 kg/ha DM. The experimental animals were Angus heifers with an initial age of 15 months and body weight of 241.5±5 kg. The experimental design was completely randomized following a repeated measure arrangement, with four treatments and variable number of experimental units. The highest growth of leaf blades was achieved with 100 kg/ha N. Senescence and intake flows and defoliation intensity were similar among the N levels used. The frequency of return to the same tiller (days) was influenced by N levels and evaluation periods. Our findings recommend the use of 100 kg/ha N in Alexandergrass pasture. A determinação dos fluxos de biomassa pode auxiliar no aperfeiçoamento das técnicas de adubação de pastagens, pois contribui para a identificação das melhores formas de manejo, que incluem o uso de fertilizantes. A deficiência de N em pastagens pode reduzir a produção de forragem. Por outro lado, existe uma preocupação ambiental relativa às perdas de nitrogênio (N) quando esse nutriente é utilizado em excesso e essa preocupação direciona a pesquisa para novos sistemas de pastejo que otimizem o uso deste nutriente. Os fluxos de biomassa foliar, a intensidade e frequência de desfolha foram avaliados quando o papuã (Urochloa plantaginea (Link) Hitch) foi adubado com Zero, 100, 200 ou 300 kg/ha de nitrogênio (N), na forma de ureia. O método de pastejo foi contínuo com número variável de animais para manter a massa de forragem em 3000 kg/ha de MS. Os animais experimentais foram bezerras Angus com idade e peso corporal médio inicial de 15 meses e 241,5±5 kg, respectivamente. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, com medidas repetidas no tempo, com quatro tratamentos e número variável de unidades experimentais. O uso de 100 kg/ha de N proporcionou maior fluxo de crescimento de lâminas foliares. Os fluxos de senescência e de consumo e a intensidade de desfolha foram similares nos níveis de N utilizados. A frequência de retorno dos animais ao mesmo perfilho (dias) foi influenciado pelos níveis de N e períodos de avaliação. É recomendada a utilização de 100 kg/ha de N em pastagem de papuã.

The experiment evaluated the morphogenesis and structure of Tifton 85 (Cynodon spp.) cultivated in subtropical climate and fertilized with nitrogen (N). The experiment was a completely randomized design with four levels of N (Zero; 75; 150 or 225 kg ha-1) in nine replicates per area. The experimental animals were Suffolk female lambs. The grazing method was continuous to maintain the sward height at 15 cm ± 10%. The stem expansion increased by 0.000027 cm degree-days-1 to each kg N applied (linear model). According to nonlinear model, the highest stem expansion (0.0226 cm degree-days-1) was observed with the use 220.1 kg ha-1 N. The leaf lifespan fitted a linear regression model, with increase of 50 degree-days leaf -1, comparing the levels zero and 225 kg ha-1 of N. According to nonlinear regression model, the longest leaf lifespan (407.1 degree-days) was observed with the use 208.8 kg ha-1 N. With the maintenance of sward height at approximately 15 cm, we recommended to use 200 kg ha-1 N in Tifton 85 cultivated in subtropical climate. RESUMO. Objetivou-se estudar a morfogênese e a estrutura do Tifton 85 (Cynodon spp.) cultivado em clima subtropical e adubado com nitrogênio (N). O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente casualizado com quatro níveis de N (Zero; 75; 150 e 225 kg ha-1) em nove repetições por área. Os animais experimentais foram borregas das raças Suffolk. O método de pastejo foi o contínuo para manter a altura do dossel em 15 cm ± 10%. A taxa de expansão de colmos aumenta 0,000027 cm graus-dia-1 para cada kg de N aplicado (modelo linear). De acordo com o modelo não linear, o maior valor de taxa de expansão (0,0226 cm graus-dia-1) foi observado com 220,1 kg ha-1 de N. A duração de vida das folhas ajustou-se ao modelo de regressão linear, com aumento de 50 graus-dia folha-1 comparando-se às doses de 0 e 225 kg ha-1 de N. Conforme o modelo não linear, o maior valor de duração de vida da folha (407,1 graus-dia) foi atingido com 208,8 kg ha-1 de N. Com a manutenção da altura do dossel em aproximadamente 15 cm de altura, recomenda-se utilizar 200 kg ha-1 de N em Tifton 85 cultivado em clima subtropical.

The present study evaluated the incorporation of 5, 7.5, and 10% of Riesling skin flour (RSF) and Tannat skin flour (TSF) as wheat flour replacement in muffins. The flour was evaluated for gluten content and Alveograph parameters. The finished products were evaluated for chemical composition and technological properties, and a sensory analysis was performed. All samples presented higher dietary fiber content than wheat flour, and this was mainly in the form of soluble dietary fiber. The inclusion of grape skin flour decreased the lightness of the flour and increased the lightness values (L*) of the muffin crumbs and crusts. The hardness of the muffins that incorporated RSF and TSF muffins increased as the percentage of the skin flour increased. There was a decrease in the cohesiveness value as the skin flour percentage increased. Consumers did not perceive the levels of substitution. This experiment evaluated forage production, sward structure, stocking rate, weight gain per area and nutritive value of forage as grazed by beef heifers on Alexandergrass (Urochloa plantaginea (Link) Hitch) pasture fertilized with nitrogen (N): 0; 100; 200 or 300 kg of N/ha. The experiment was a completely randomized design following a repeated measurement arrangement. The experimental animals were Angus heifers with initial age and weight of 15 months and 241.5±5 kg, respectively. The grazing method was continuous, with put-and-take stocking. N utilization, regardless of the level, increase by 25% the daily forage accumulation rate and the weight gain per area by 23%. The level of 97.2 kg N/ha leads to a higher leaf blade mass and increases by 20% the leaf:stem ratio. Alterations in sward structure changes the nutritive value of forage as grazed. The utilization of 112.7 kg of N/ha allows the highest stocking rate (2049.8 kg of BW/ha), equivalent to 7.5 heifers per hectare. Nesse experimento objetivou-se estudar a produção de forragem, estrutura do dossel, taxa de lotação, ganho de peso por área e o valor nutritivo da forragem aparentemente consumida por bezerras de corte em pastagem de papuã (Urochloa plantaginea (Link) Hitch) adubada com nitrogênio (N): 0; 100; 200 ou 300 kg/ha. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, com medidas repetidas no tempo. Os animais experimentais foram bezerras da raça Angus com idade e peso iniciais de 15 meses e 241±5 kg, respectivamente. O método de pastejo foi contínuo, com número variável de animais. A utilização de N, independente da quantidade, aumentou em 25% a taxa de acúmulo de forragem. A adubação com N proporciona aumento de 25% na taxa de acúmulo diária de forragem e 23% no ganho de peso por área. A dose de 97,2 kg/ha de N proporciona maior massa de lâminas foliares e aumento de 20% na razão folha:colmo. As alterações na estrutura do dossel modificam o valor nutritivo da forragem da simulação de pastejo. A dose de 112,7 kg/ha de N permite a manutenção da maior taxa de lotação (2049,8 kg/ha de PC), equivalendo a 7,5 bezerras por hectare.

The objective of this study was to determine the leaf tissue flows in Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.), in different phenological stages, grazed by lambs, and managed under three herbage allowances (6, 9 and 12 kg DM/100 kg body weight under rotational stocking method. The experimental design was completely randomized, with repeated measures arrangement. Forage allowances determined similar growth and intake flows, actual and potential utilization efficiencies of grass and they were different in the phenological stages of Italian ryegrass. The intake of leaf blade, as a percentage of body weight, was higher in the 12% herbage allowance. Considering leaf tissue flows, Italian ryegrass can be managed in forage allowances that vary between 6 and 12 kg DM/100 kg body weight. RESUMO: Este trabalho foi conduzido com o objetivo de determinar os fluxos de tecidos foliares em diferentes estádios fenológicos do azevém (Lolium multiflorum Lam.), pastejado por cordeiras, manejado sob três níveis de oferta de forragem (6; 9 e 12 kg de MS/100 kg de peso corporal), sob lotação intermitente. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, com medidas repetidas no tempo. Os fluxos de crescimento e consumo de lâminas foliares, as eficiências real e potencial de utilização do pasto foram similares nas ofertas de forragem e diferentes nos estádios fenológicos do azevém. O consumo de lâminas foliares em porcentagem do peso corporal foi superior na oferta de forragem 12%. Considerando os fluxos de tecidos foliares, o azevém pode ser manejado com ofertas de forragem que variam entre 6 a 12 kg de MS/100 kg de peso corporal.

The study was carried out to evaluate the forage intake and performance of beef heifers from 15 to 18 months of age, grazing on Alexandergrass (Urochloaplantaginea (Link) Hitch) fed rice bran (RB; 0, 0.5 and 1.0% body weight (BW)). The experiment consisted of a completely randomized design with repeated measurement arrangement. Rice bran increased the total dry matter (DM) intake, total crude protein intake and total digestible nutrients intake. Heifers that received 1.0% BW of RB reduced forage DM intake, increasing by 18% stocking rate (SR) and by 27% BW gain per area in comparison with the system exclusively on pasture. In the system in which the heifers were fed 0.5% BW of RB, SR and gain per area were similar to other systems. In this feeding system, we observed average daily gain 18% higher than when heifers were exclusively on pasture and gain similar to that observed when using 1.0% BW of RB. In Alexandergrass pasture it is recommended to supply 0.5% BW of RB for beef heifers from 15 to 18 months of age, to promote better productive responses compared to heifers exclusively on pasture and similar to those observed when supplying 1.0% BW of RB. RESUMO O presente trabalho foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de avaliar o consumo de forragem e o desempenho de novilhas de corte dos 15 aos 18 meses de idade, em pastejo em papuã (Urochloaplantaginea(Link) Hitch), recebendo farelo de arroz integral (FAI) como suplemento (0, 0,5 e 1,0% do peso corporal (PC)). O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente ao acaso, com medidas repetidas no tempo. O uso de FAI aumentou o consumo total de matéria seca (MS), o consumo total de proteína bruta e de nutrientes digestíveis totais em relação às novilhas exclusivamente em pastejo. As novilhas que receberam 1,0% do PC de FAI reduziram o consumo de MS da forragem, aumentando em 18% a taxa de lotação (TxLot) e em 27% o ganho de PC por hectare (GPA) em comparação com o sistema exclusivamente a pasto. No sistema em que as novilhas receberam 0,5% do PC de FAI, a TxLot e o GPA foram similares aos demais sistemas. Nesse sistema alimentar, foi observado GDM 18% superior em relação às novilhas exclusivamente em pastejo e ganho similar ao uso de 1,0% do PC de FAI. Em pastagem de papuã, é recomendado o uso de 0,5% do PC de FAI para novilhas de corte dos 15 aos 18 meses de idade, por promover respostas produtivas superiores em relação às novilhas exclusivamente em pastejo e semelhantes às observadas quando fornecido 1,0% do PC de FAI.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the development of beef heifers exclusively fed alexander grass ( Urochloa plantaginea (Link) Hitch) or alexander grass and whole rice meal as supplement offered from Monday to Friday. The experimental design was completely randomized, with repeated measures over time, and consisted of two treatments and three replications of area. Heifers receiving whole rice meal exhibited higher average daily gain after day 42 of pasture use and a 21% higher body weight at the end of the grazing period. The stocking rate, weight gain per area, hip height, weight-height ratio, and body condition score were similar for heifers exclusively fed alexander grass and alexander grass plus rice bran. Beef heifers raised exclusively on alexander grass from 15 to 18 months of age reached adequate body development, reproductive tract score (4.22 points) and pelvic area (206.3 cm²) to be bred at 18-20 months of age.

This study was conducted to evaluate the ingestive behavior, displacement patterns and meal dynamics of beef heifers in Alexandergrass pasture (Urochloa plantaginea (Link.) Hitch) receiving different amounts of oat grain: 0, 0.80 and 1.12% of body weight (BW). The grazing method was continuous with put-and-take stocking. The experimental design was completely randomized following a repeated measure arrangement. The grazing time decreased and the idling time increased when beef heifers were supplemented, independently of supplement amount, while the rumination time was similar across supplement amounts. The number of feeding stations per minute and the number of steps taken between each feeding station were similar regardless of supplementation. When receiving 1.12% of BW of oat grain, heifers remained longer in each feeding station and took fewer steps per minute. The number of meals decreased and the duration of breaks between meals increased when heifers received oat grain. The duration of each meal was similar for heifers receiving supplement than for those that did not. Understanding how animals adjust their grazing behavior and cope with changing environmental dynamics is essential for the development of management strategies designed to optimize animal production.

The objective was to analyze the ingestive behavior, forage intake and pasture characteristics when beef heifers are kept exclusively on ryegrass pasture (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) or receiving ground corn grain as supplement (0.9% of body weight (BW )) with or without addition of crude glycerin (0.2% BW). Experimental animals were Angus heifers with initial age and body weight of eight months and 166.2 ± 9.5 kg, respectively. The grazing method was continuous with variable number of animals. The experimental design was completely randomized with repeated measures. Dry matter intake was estimated using chromium oxide as an indicator of fecal output. Heifers ingested a similar amount of dry matter and neutral detergent fiber. Forage intake was 19.0% lower when heifers receiving ground corn grain as supplement with or without addition of crude glycerin and these reduction in dry matter intake of forage provided increase of 38.2% in the stocking rate. Heifers that received crude glycerin as a supplement spent more time in the trough than heifers that received only ground corn grain. Objetivou-se avalizar o comportamento ingestivo, ingestão de forragem e as características da pastagem quando bezerras de corte são mantidas exclusivamente em pastagem de azevém (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) ou recebendo grão de milho quebrado como suplemento (0,9% do peso corporal (PC)) com ou sem adição de glicerina bruta (0,2% PC). Os animais experimentais foram bezerras Angus com idade e peso inicial de oito meses e 166,2 ± 9,5 kg, respectivamente. O método de pastejo foi o contínuo com número variável de animais. O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente casualizado com medidas repetidas no tempo. A ingestão de matéria seca foi estimada usando óxido de cromo como indicador de produção fecal. As bezerras ingeriram similares quantidades de matéria seca e fibra em detergente neutro. A ingestão de forragem foi 19.0% menor quando as bezerras recebem grão de milho quebrado como suplemento com ou sem adição de glicerina bruta e essa redução na ingestão de matéria seca de forragem promove aumento de 38,2% na taxa de lotação. Bezerras que recebem glicerina bruta como suplemento permanecem mais tempo no cocho do que bezerras que recebem somente grão de milho quebrado.

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o tempo de permanência, o número de bocados nas estações e o deslocamento entre estações alimentares por bezerras de corte em pastagem de azevém (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) e recebendo farelo de arroz integral como suplemento em três níveis (0,0; 0,5 e 1,0% PC). O método de pastejo foi rotacionado, com número variável de animais. O período de descanso foi estabelecido pela soma térmica (ST) de 187,5ºC, equivalente à ST necessária para a emissão de 1,5 folhas de azevém. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente ao acaso, com medidas repetidas no tempo, três níveis de suplemento e seis ciclos de pastejo. O tempo de permanência em cada estação alimentar (9,4s) foi semelhante para bezerras exclusivamente a pasto e as que receberam 1,0% PC de suplemento. As bezerras que receberam 0,5% PC de suplemento permanecem 1,1s a mais na estação alimentar quando comparadas com as bezerras nos demais níveis. O deslocamento entre estações alimentares (1,7 passos) e o número de bocados em cada estação alimentar (sete bocados) foram semelhantes independentemente do nível de farelo de arroz fornecido. As bezerras, ao receberem 0,5% PC de farelo de arroz, são mais dependentes da presença de lâminas foliares no estrato pastejável do dossel. ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the length of stay and number of bites in the feeding stations and displacement between feeding stations for beef heifers on ryegrass pasture (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) and receiving rice bran as a supplement in three levels (0.0; 0.5 and 1.0% BW). The grazing method was rotational with variable number of animals. The interval between grazing was set by the thermal sum (TS) of 187.5ºC equivalent to TS necessary for externalization of 1.5 leaf lamina of ryegrass. The experimental design was completely randomized with repeated measures on time, three levels of supplement and six grazing periods. The stay time at each feeding station (9.4 sec.) was similar for heifers exclusively on pasture and receiving 1.0% supplement BW. Heifers that received 0.5% supplement BW remained 1.1 sec. longer at the feeding station than heifers on other supplement levels. Displacement between feeding stations (1.7 steps) and the number of bites in each feeding station (7 bites) were similar regardless of the supplied rice bran level. Heifers receiving 0.5% rice bran BW are more dependent on the presence of leaf blades in grazeable stratum of canopy.

Foi avaliado o efeito de diferentes frequências de suplementação sobre o uso da pastagem (fluxo de tecido foliar, intensidade e frequência de desfolhação) em papuã (Urochloa plantaginea (Link) Hitch). As bezerras de corte permaneceram exclusivamente em pastejo ou receberam grão inteiro de aveia durante sete ou cinco dias por semana (de segunda à sexta feira). A quantidade semanal de suplemento foi similar nas duas frequências. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, com medidas repetidas no tempo, três tratamentos e duas repetições de área. Os fluxos de tecidos, a frequência e intensidade de desfolhação são similares quando as bezerras permanecem exclusivamente em pastejo ou recebem grão de aveia em diferentes frequências. The effects of several supplementation frequencies on forage use (leaf tissue flow, intensity and frequency of defoliation) in Alexandergrass (Urochloa plantaginea (Link) Hitch) were evaluated. The heifers remained exclusively on pasture or received whole oat grain seven days/week or five days/week (Monday to Friday). The weekly amount of supplement was similar for both frequencies. The experimental design was completely randomized following a repeated measure arrangement, with three treatments and two area replications. Leaf tissue flow, frequency and intensity of defoliation are similar when heifers remain exclusively on Alexandergrass pasture or receive oat grain on different frequencies.

The experiment aimed at evaluating leaf biomass flow, intensity and frequency of defoliation of Alexandergrass (Urochloa plantaginea (Link) Hitch) by beef heifers exclusively on pasture or that grazed and received protein salt. A completely randomized experimental design was used with repeated measures over time, two treatments and two area replications, with three Angus test heifers by paddock. Leaf blade intake flow is 18% superior for heifers exclusively on pasture. Grazing intensity (59.8%) is similar when heifers receive protein salt or not. Heifers receiving protein salt reduce by one day the defoliation frequency of tillers. The supply of protein salt for beef heifers grazing Alexandergrass affects the herbivore-plant relationship, decreasing intake flow and leaf blade defoliation frequency.

A joint data analysis was performed to characterize forage intake rate and patterns of use of time by grazing heifers in cold season pastures. Heifers received or not energetic supplementation at different phenological stages of grasses (vegetative, pre-flowering and flowering). Experiments involved 360 heifers with initial age of eight months and average body weight of 145 ± 17 kg, on continuous grazing method and variable number of animals. Supplementaed heifers consumed 17.0% less forage and 22.2% less leaf blades than heifers exclusively on pasture. Grazing activity was concentrated in the afternoon shift, regardless of the feeding system and phenological stages evaluated, with the longest event of rumination during the night. Forage intake rate is similar, regardless of supplement intake and phenological stages of grasses. RESUMO Foi realizada uma análise conjunta de dados, com o objetivo de caracterizar a taxa de ingestão de forragem e os padrões de uso do tempo por novilhas em pastejo de forrageiras de estação fria. Essas novilhas recebiam ou não suplemento energético nos diferentes estádios fenológicos do pasto (vegetativo, pré-florescimento e florescimento). Os experimentos envolveram 360 novilhas, com idade inicial de oito meses e peso corporal médio de 145 ± 17 kg. O método de pastejo foi o de lotação contínua, com número variável de animais. Novilhas recebendo suplemento consumiram 17,0% a menos de forragem e 22,2% a menos de lâminas foliares que as novilhas exclusivamente em pastejo. A atividade de pastejo foi concentrada no turno da tarde, independente do sistema alimentar e dos estádios fenológicos avaliados, e no turno da noite acontece o evento mais longo de ruminação. A taxa de ingestão de forragem é semelhante, independente do consumo de suplemento e dos estádios fenológicos dos pastos.
