Hydrogels are homogeneous three-dimensional polymeric networks capable of holding large amounts of water and are widely used in topical formulations. Herein, the physicomechanical, rheological, bioadhesive, and drug-release properties of hydrogels containing hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) were examined, and the intermolecular interactions between the polymers were explored. A three-level factorial design was used to form HPMC–PVP binary hydrogels. The physicomechanical properties of the binary hydrogels alongside the homopolymeric HPMC hydrogels were characterized using a texture analyzer. Rheological properties of the gels were studied using a cone and plate rheometer. The bioadhesiveness of selected binary hydrogels was tested on porcine skin. Hydrophilic benzophenone-4 was loaded into both homopolymeric and binary gels, and drug-release profiles were investigated over 24 h at 33 °C. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to understand the inter-molecular drug–gel interactions. Factorial design analysis supported the dominant role of the HPMC in determining the gel properties, rather than the PVP, with the effect of both polymer concentrations being non-linear. The addition of PVP to the HPMC gels improved adhesiveness without significantly affecting other properties such as hardness, shear-thinning feature, and viscosity, thereby improving bioadhesiveness for sustained skin retention without negatively impacting cosmetic acceptability or ease of use. The release of benzophenone-4 in the HPMC hydrogels followed zero-order kinetics, with benzophenone-4 release being significantly retarded by the presence of PVP, likely due to intermolecular interactions between the drug and the PVP polymer, as confirmed by the FTIR. The HPMC–PVP binary hydrogels demonstrate strong bioadhesiveness resulting from the addition of PVP with desirable shear-thinning properties that allow the formulation to have extended skin-retention times. The developed HPMC–PVP binary hydrogel is a promising sustained-release platform for topical drug delivery.

The giant magnetoimpedance (GMI) and giant stress impedance (GSI) behaviors of amorphous ribbons composed of three commercially available materials (Co66Si15B14Fe4Ni1, Fe81B13Si3.5C2, and Ni40Fe40Si + B19Mo1−2) with differing saturation magnetostriction constants (λ s) and Young's moduli (E) were studied under longitudinal stress/strain. The linearity of the ribbons' GSI responses and gauge factors was measured to create a figure of merit and compare their stress/strain sensing performance for strains up to ɛ = 10 × 10−3. We observed that the Ni40Fe40Si + B19Mo1−2 ribbon displayed the best performance for low strains (ɛ < 1 × 10−3), whereas the Co66Si15B14Fe4Ni1 ribbon displayed the best performance for higher strains (ɛ < 10 × 10−3). We conclude that the suitability of a material for sensing strains in any given strain regime has a complex dependence on both λ s and E, the former of which dictates both the absolute magnitude of the impedance variation materials exhibit (i.e., the dynamic range), while both λ s and E control how their impedances vary with applied strain. We study the influence of ribbon geometry on the giant magnetoimpedance (GMI) behavior of both low- and high-aspect ratio [length (l)/width (w) = 2–150] ribbons made from commercially available amorphous magnetic materials. Our results indicate that the variation of the ribbons' GMI with geometry is due to the combination of edge effects (due to damage created by the ribbon cutting process) and global shape anisotropy. In high-aspect ratio ribbons [length (l)/width (w)≥ 20], we find that the GMI decreases with width, which we suggest is due to the cutting process creating induced stresses that suppress the transverse susceptibility at the edge of the material. In lower aspect ratio ribbons [length (l)/width (w) ≤ 20], shape anisotropy results in a relatively rapid increase in GMI with increasing length. We conclude that, with suitable optimization, high-aspect ratio ribbons prepared from commercially available materials are suitable for use as macro-scale sensors that detect small magnetic fields/strains over a large sensing area. The pursuit of the common good is an important endeavor in business and marketing. The benefits of this pursuit to society are reflected in the increasing number of journal special issues dedicated to common good–related research and the recent observation that the marketing discipline is supportive of business research as a catalyst for positive change. Despite its importance, little is known about the nature of the common good within marketing scholarship. This article presents a systematic, multimethod inquiry to assess the representation and impact of the common good, with a focus on equity. The authors analyze publications in the Journal of Public Policy & Marketing and marketing journals on the Financial Times 50 list. This work acknowledges the significant influence of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals and Sustainable Development Goals on global policy and the benefits to people around the world. It also responds to the call for marketing scholars to pay more attention to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The authors use insights from their inquiry to identify a promising agenda for future research that contributes to the promotion of the common good in relation to eradicating poverty, improving health, achieving universal education, and promoting gender equality. This essay reads W.E.B. DuBois's 1935 masterpiece, Black Reconstruction, as a creative exemplar of the Marxist tradition. DuBois's work radically transforms that tradition from within by placing slavery squarely at the center of the story of capitalism's emergence. In so doing, DuBois offers a productive model for disentangling the critique of capitalism from Marx's theory of history, with its residual Eurocentrism and progressivism. The key to this transformation is DuBois' characterization of the slave as the black worker. Brilliant though this move may be, it also has its limits, which I probe by exploring the dis-analogies between the status of the slave and that of the worker. On this point, I contend, DuBois's Marxism remains, in the end, a bit too orthodox. However, his work also contains the seeds of a more promising framework for theorizing racial capitalism, one that insists that racism cannot be entirely subsumed within capitalism, even if we must think through their complex intersections and interconnections. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are a heterogeneous population of lipid bilayer membrane-enclosed vesicles and act like 'messages in a bottle' in cell-cell communication by transporting their cargoes to recipient cells. Small EVs (sEVs, < 200 nm) are highly researched recently and have been harnessed as novel delivery systems for the treatment of various diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and most importantly cancer primarily because of their non-immunogenicity, tissue penetration and cell-tropism. This review will first provide a comprehensive overview of sEVs regarding the current understanding on their properties, biogenesis, new classification by the ISEV, composition, as well as their roles in cancer development (thereby called "oncosomes"). The primary focus will be given to the current state of sEVs as natural nanocarriers for cancer drug delivery, the technologies and challenges involved in sEV isolation and characterization, therapeutic cargo loading, and surface modification to enhance tumor-targeting. We will also provide examples of sEV products under clinical trials. Furthermore, the current challenges as well as the advance in "sEV mimetics" to address some of the sEVs limitations is briefly discussed. Although the affinity of medieval architectural drawings to the graphic procedures of setting-out has been extensively discussed, the role of scale drawings in the design practice of the late Middle-Ages and the Early Modern period is still subject of debate. This regards also the drawings of complex late Gothic rib vaults. An opportunity for better understanding their precise use and function within the design and planning of complex stone structures is given by a case study on the vault in St. Catherine's chapel in Strasbourg Cathedral, where an original drawing of the plan can be compared with the existing structure as it was actually built. The vault with looping ribs was completed in 1547. The comparative study of the drawing and the building is based on the previous research on the procedures of stone-planning in late Gothic vaults, and comprises also building archaeology, surveys, and geometric analyses of the vault. The article presents a report summarizing the International Pediatric Radiology 7th Conjoint Meeting and Exhibition held at the Fairmont Hotel in Chicago, Illinois from May 15 to 20, 2016. Topics discussed include goals of the event like addressing updates on advanced pediatric imaging solutions and the pediatric radiology profession, a schedule of activities like concurrent sunrise sessions and concurrent scientific sessions, and presented studies of the meeting.

Background:Vestibular schwannomas are a rare cause of asymmetrical hearing loss, and routine screening with magnetic resonance imaging can be costly. This paper reports results on vestibular schwannoma screening at our institution and compares the cost of screening to a utility of hearing benefit.Method:All screening examinations with magnetic resonance imaging performed for asymmetrical hearing loss between 2006 and 2011 were retrospectively reviewed. The cost per new vestibular schwannoma diagnosis was calculated. The cost per patient for those who benefitted from intervention was estimated based on rates of hearing preservation reported in the literature.Results:Forty-five (4.3 per cent) of 1050 screening examinations with magnetic resonance imaging performed for asymmetrical hearing loss were positive for vestibular schwannoma, and the cost per new diagnosis was $11 436. The estimated screening cost per patient for those who benefitted from surgery or radiation was $147 030, while US federal compensation for unilateral hearing loss was $44 888.Conclusion:Although we achieved a lower screening cost per new diagnosis than reported in the current literature, there remains disparity between the screening cost per benefitted patient and the ‘benefit’ of hearing. Recently, Mendes et al. [1] described the use of a liquid tool (water) in captive orangutans. Here, we tested chimpanzees and gorillas for the first time with the same "floating peanut task." None of the subjects solved the task. In order to better understand the cognitive demands of the task, we further tested other populations of chimpanzees and orangutans with the variation of the peanut initially floating or not. Twenty percent of the chimpanzees but none of the orangutans were successful. Additional controls revealed that successful subjects added water only if it was necessary to obtain the nut. Another experiment was conducted to investigate the reason for the differences in performance between the unsuccessful (Experiment 1) and the successful (Experiment 2) chimpanzee populations. We found suggestive evidence for the view that functional fixedness might have impaired the chimpanzees' strategies in the first experiment. Finally, we tested how human children of different age classes perform in an analogous experimental setting. Within the oldest group (8 years), 58 percent of the children solved the problem, whereas in the youngest group (4 years), only 8 percent were able to find the solution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy and tolerability of the dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor vildagliptin in combination with the thiazolidinedione (TZD) pioglitazone in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Methods: This was a 24-week, multicentre, double-blind, randomized, parallel-group study comparing the effects of vildagliptin (50 or 100 mg daily) with placebo as an add-on therapy to pioglitazone (45 mg daily) in 463 patients with T2DM inadequately controlled by prior TZD monotherapy. Between-treatment comparisons of efficacy parameters were made by analysis of covariance model. Results: The adjusted mean change (AMΔ) in haemoglobin A1c from baseline to endpoint was −0.8 ± 0.1% (p = 0.001 vs. placebo) and −1.0 ± 0.1% (p < 0.001 vs. placebo), respectively, in patients receiving vildagliptin 50 or 100 mg daily. Relative to baseline, vildagliptin added to pioglitazone also reduced fasting plasma glucose (FPG) (AMΔ FPG =−0.8 ± 0.2 mmol/l and −1.1 ± 0.2 mmol/l; not significant (NS) vs. placebo) and postprandial glucose (PPG) [AMΔ PPG =−1.9 ± 0.6 mmol/l and −2.6 ± 0.6 mmol/l (p = 0.008 vs. placebo)] for 50 and 100 mg daily respectively. Relative to placebo, both doses of vildagliptin significantly increased the insulin secretory rate/glucose by more than threefold. The overall incidence of adverse events (AEs) was 55.5, 50.0 and 48.7% in patients receiving vildagliptin 50 mg, 100 mg daily or placebo respectively. Serious AEs were experienced by 6.8, 1.3 and 5.7% of patients receiving vildagliptin 50 mg, 100 mg daily or placebo respectively. Mild hypoglycaemia was reported by 0, 0.6 and 1.9% of patients, respectively, receiving vildagliptin 50 mg, 100 mg daily or placebo. Conclusion: Vildagliptin is effective and well tolerated when added to a maximum dose of pioglitazone, without increasing the risk of hypoglycaemia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS) has been used to measure simultaneously the concentrations of both carbon disulphide and acetone in exhaled breath following the ingestion of a single dose of disulfiram (Antabuse). Carbon disulphide is a product of the metabolism of disulfiram and is excreted mainly through the lungs. Acetone is a product of normal metabolism and appears in the breath of all individuals. These breath analyses were performed in single exhalations and the results were available in real time. The levels of breath acetone and carbon disulphide were compared with levels obtained from a control subject who had not ingested disulfiram. Breath carbon disulphide was seen to increase from 15 p.p.b. to 618 p.p.b. over a 28-hour period, in the single individual tested, following ingestion of disulfiram, while acetone levels increased from 300 p.p.b. (normal) to over 4000 p.p.b. (greatly elevated). No such increases were seen in the breath of the control subject over the same period. An obvious positive correlation between breath carbon disulphide and acetone concentrations following disulfiram ingestion is seen and discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
