The density of wood is a key indicator of the carbon investment strategies of trees, impacting productivity and carbon storage. Despite its importance, the global variation in wood density and its environmental controls remain poorly understood, preventing accurate predictions of global forest carbon stocks. Here we analyse information from 1.1 million forest inventory plots alongside wood density data from 10,703 tree species to create a spatially explicit understanding of the global wood density distribution and its drivers. Our findings reveal a pronounced latitudinal gradient, with wood in tropical forests being up to 30% denser than that in boreal forests. In both angiosperms and gymnosperms, hydrothermal conditions represented by annual mean temperature and soil moisture emerged as the primary factors influencing the variation in wood density globally. This indicates similar environmental filters and evolutionary adaptations among distinct plant groups, underscoring the essential role of abiotic factors in determining wood density in forest ecosystems. Additionally, our study highlights the prominent role of disturbance, such as human modification and fire risk, in influencing wood density at more local scales. Factoring in the spatial variation of wood density notably changes the estimates of forest carbon stocks, leading to differences of up to 21% within biomes. Forests are a substantial terrestrial carbon sink, but anthropogenic changes in land use and climate have considerably reduced the scale of this system 1 . Remote-sensing estimates to quantify carbon losses from global forests 2-5 are characterized by considerable uncertainty and we lack a comprehensive ground-sourced evaluation to benchmark these estimates. Here we combine several ground-sourced 6 and satellite-derived approaches 2,7,8 to evaluate the scale of the global forest carbon potential outside agricultural and urban lands. Despite regional variation, the predictions demonstrated remarkable consistency at a global scale, with only a 12% difference between the ground-sourced and satellite-derived estimates. At present, global forest carbon storage is markedly under the natural potential, with a total deficit of 226 Gt (model range = 151-363 Gt) in areas with low human footprint. Most (61%, 139 Gt C) of this potential is in areas with existing forests, in which ecosystem protection can allow forests to recover to maturity. The remaining 39% (87 Gt C) of potential lies in regions in which forests have been removed or fragmented. Understanding what controls global leaf type variation in trees is crucial for comprehending their role in terrestrial ecosystems, including carbon, water and nutrient dynamics. Yet our understanding of the factors influencing forest leaf types remains incomplete, leaving us uncertain about the global proportions of needle-leaved, broadleaved, evergreen and deciduous trees. To address these gaps, we conducted a global, ground-sourced assessment of forest leaf-type variation by integrating forest inventory data with comprehensive leaf form (broadleaf vs needle-leaf) and habit (evergreen vs deciduous) records. We found that global variation in leaf habit is primarily driven by isothermality and soil characteristics, while leaf form is predominantly driven by temperature. Given these relationships, we estimate that 38% of global tree individuals are needle-leaved evergreen, 29% are broadleaved evergreen, 27% are broadleaved deciduous and 5% are needle-leaved deciduous. The aboveground biomass distribution among these tree types is approximately 21% (126.4 Gt), 54% (335.7 Gt), 22% (136.2 Gt) and 3% (18.7 Gt), respectively. We further project that, depending on future emissions pathways, 17-34% of forested areas will experience climate conditions by the end of the century that currently support a different forest type, highlighting the intensification of climatic stress on existing forests. Determining the drivers of non-native plant invasions is critical for managing native ecosystems and limiting the spread of invasive species 1,2 . Tree invasions in particular have been relatively overlooked, even though they have the potential to transform ecosystems and economies 3,4 . Here, leveraging global tree databases 5-7 , we explore how the phylogenetic and functional diversity of native tree communities, human pressure and the environment influence the establishment of non-native tree species and the subsequent invasion severity. We find that anthropogenic factors are key to predicting whether a location is invaded, but that invasion severity is underpinned by native diversity, with higher diversity predicting lower invasion severity. Temperature and precipitation emerge as strong predictors of invasion strategy, with non-native species invading successfully when they are similar to the native community in cold or dry extremes. Yet, despite the influence of these ecological forces in determining invasion strategy, we find evidence that these patterns can be obscured by human activity, with lower ecological signal in areas with higher proximity to shipping ports. The latitudinal diversity gradient (LDG) is one of the most recognized global patterns of species richness exhibited across a wide range of taxa. Numerous hypotheses have been proposed in the past two centuries to explain LDG, but rigorous tests of the drivers of LDGs have been limited by a lack of high-quality global species richness data. Here we produce a high-resolution (0.025° × 0.025°) map of local tree species richness using a global forest inventory database with individual tree information and local biophysical characteristics from ~1.3 million sample plots. We then quantify drivers of local tree species richness patterns across latitudes. Generally, annual mean temperature was a dominant predictor of tree species richness, which is most consistent with the metabolic theory of biodiversity (MTB). However, MTB underestimated LDG in the tropics, where high species richness was also moderated by topographic, soil and anthropogenic factors operating at local scales. Given that local landscape variables operate synergistically with bioclimatic factors in shaping the global LDG pattern, we suggest that MTB be extended to account for co-limitation by subordinate drivers., (© 2022. The biodiversity-productivity relationship (BPR) is foundational to our understanding of the global extinction crisis and its impacts on ecosystem functioning. Understanding BPR is critical for the accurate valuation and effective conservation of biodiversity. Using ground-sourced data from 777,126 permanent plots, spanning 44 countries and most terrestrial biomes, we reveal a globally consistent positive concave-down BPR, showing that continued biodiversity loss would result in an accelerating decline in forest productivity worldwide. The value of biodiversity in maintaining commercial forest productivity alone-US$166 billion to 490 billion per year according to our estimation-is more than twice what it would cost to implement effective global conservation. In the Eurasian forest-steppe, with increasing aridity, the balance between naturally co-existing forest and grassland patches is expected to shift towards grassland dominance in the long run, although feedback mechanisms and changes in land-use may alter this process. In this study, we compared old and recent aerial photographs of Hungarian forest-steppes to find out whether and how the forest proportion and the number of forest patches change at the decadal time scale. The percentage area covered by forest significantly increased in all study sites. The observed forest encroachment may be a legacy from earlier land-use: due to ceased or reduced grazing pressure, forests are invading grasslands until the potential forest cover allowed by climate and soil is reached. The number of forest patches significantly increased at one site (Fülöpháza), while it decreased at two sites (Bugac and Orgovány) and showed no significant change at the fourth site (Tázlár). This indicates that forest encroachment can happen at least in two different ways: through the emergence of new forest patches in the grassland, and through the extension and coalescence of already existing forest patches. Though the present work revealed increasing tree cover at a decadal time scale, the dynamic process should be monitored in the future to see how the vegetation reacts to further aridification. Using direct measurements of CO2 fluxes by the method of turbulent pulsations, it was shown that the studied middle-taiga pine forest, raised bog, true steppe, and southern tundra along the Yenisei meridian (approximately 90 degrees E) are stocks of carbon of different capacity in the annual output. The tundra starts to function as a stock of carbon from June; the forest and bog, from May; and the steppe, from the end of April. In the transitional seasons and winter, the ecosystems are a weak source of carbon: the tundra already in September; the forest and bog, from October; and the steppe, from November. The photosynthetic productivity of the forest and steppe ecosys- tems (480-530 g C/(m x year) exceeds 2-2.5 times the productivity ofbogs and tundras (200-220 g C/(m x year). The relationships between the thermal balance structure and CO2 exchange are shown. Possible feedbacks between the carbon exchange between the ecosystems and the atmosphere as a result of climate warming in the region are assessed.

Direct measurements of heat balance (turbulent heat transfer and evaporation heat consumption) by the method of turbulent pulsations in 1998-2000 and 2002-2004 were used to obtain information on the daily, seasonal, and annual dynamics of energy fluxes and mass transfer between the atmosphere and the typical ecosystems of Siberia (middle-taiga pine forest and raised bog, true four-grass steppe, with the use of data for typical tundra) along the Yenisei meridian (90 degrees E).

Key Message: The principal components of tree-ring anatomical chronologies of Scots pine proved to be much better proxy than its tree-ring width for reconstruction of climate-driven component in the regional yield of cereals Tree-ring records are often used as a proxy not only for climate, but also for other related variables. One of such applications is the reconstruction of crop yield, since both are indicators of productivity in the respective ecosystems. Recently, finer parameters of wood structure were applied to enhance the sensitivity and temporal resolution of the registered climatic signal and thus to improve the quality of tree-ring based reconstructions. This pioneering study tests cell-scale quantitative wood anatomy (QWA) of conifer tree species as a proxy for crop yield in the moisture-limited plains of Khakassia (South Siberia). Spring wheat, oats, and barley yield series generalized for rain-fed (north of the region) and irrigated (central part) fields in the steppes were compared with long-term (1807–2018) QWA series of the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) from the forest-steppe in the foothills. Chronologies of the cell radial diameter and cell wall thickness, describing the tree ring separated into 15 sectors, were obtained and indexed to remove their common exponential dependence on the number of cells per radial row in the ring. The tree-ring width alone could explain only 16.0 and 5.3% of yield variation for rain-fed and irrigated crops, respectively. Whereas, the multifactor linear regressions with stepwise inclusion of QWA chronologies explained 48.4 and 16.1%. The implementation of principal components for QWA in the models further increased the fitness to 48.9 and 23.0%. These reconstructions have climatic responses during the vegetative season similar to ones of the respective actual yield series. Relatively little attention has been paid to the underlying mechanisms determining the dominance of non-indigenous species (NIS) once established, despite being regarded as a proxy of invasion success and potential impacts in recipient communities. To bridge this knowledge gap, here we evaluate the potential direct and indirect effects of community filters on the dominance of two widespread NIS in the Baltic Sea: Marenzelleria spp. and the round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) within their corresponding communities. We applied a structural equation modelling approach to assess the direct and indirect effects amongst multiple abiotic and biotic variables on the relative biomass (as proxy of dominance) of NIS. The biotic variables represented the taxonomic- and functional diversity of the recipient communities, as well as the trait similarity between NIS and native species. We observed a comparable influence of abiotic and biotic drivers on the dominance of both NIS , with biotic variables having a somewhat stronger overall direct effect. Specifically, the dominance of both NIS was similarly affected negatively by the richness and positively by the evenness of the native communities. However, we also detected that both NIS might need different ecological strategies to become dominant in their recipient communities, which underwent similar assembly processes. Such strategies were partly highlighted by the different degrees of trait similarity between each NIS and their respective co-occurring native species. A better understanding of the underlying processes affecting NIS dominance is of high relevance to mitigate potential impacts of NIS once established. Baseline density of intact lymphocyte beta2 adrenoreceptors (B max., 3H-DHA) was compared to dynamics of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and frequency of essential hypertension (EH) complications within 7-9-year follow-up in 27 patients with EH stage II. No significant correlation was noted between B max and LVH changes. In a subgroup of 9 patients with initially very high B max overall number of complications reached 77.8% against 27.5%) (p<0.05) in control. These patients also developed acute myocardial infarctions more frequently (33.3% versus 0%, p<0.05). Such complications as strokes, coronary failure occurred with the same frequency. More extended trials are needed to infer on prognostic value of lymphocytic beta2-adrenoreceptor density.

Agriculture is likely to expand poleward with climate change, encouraging deforestation for agriculture in subarctic regions, which alters soil physical, chemical and biological properties and potentially affects microbial metabolic efficiency. Deciphering how and by which mechanisms land-use change affects microbial carbon use efficiency (CUE) will enable the development of mitigation strategies to alleviate C losses. We assessed CUE using 18O-labelled water in a paired-plot approach on soils collected from 19 farms across the subarctic region of Yukon, Canada, comprising 14 pairs of forest-to-grassland conversion and 15 pairs of forest-to-cropland conversion. Microbial CUE significantly increased following conversion to grassland and cropland. Land-use conversion resulted in a lower estimated abundance of fungi, while the archaeal abundance increased. Interestingly, structural equation modelling revealed that increases in CUE were mediated by a rise in soil pH and a decrease in soil C:N ratio rather than by shifts in microbial community composition, i.e. the ratio of fungi, bacteria and archaea. Our findings indicate a direct control of abiotic factors on microbial CUE via improved nutrient availability and facilitated conditions for microbial growth. Overall, this implies that to a certain extent CUE can be managed to achieve a more efficient build-up of stabilised soil organic C (SOC), as reflected in increased mineral-associated organic C under agricultural land use. These insights may also help constrain SOC models that generally struggle to predict the effects of deforestation, something that is likely to take place more frequently in the subarctic. Eurasian forest-steppes form a 9000-km-long transitional zone between temperate forests and steppes, featuring a complex mosaic of herbaceous and woody habitats. Due to its heterogeneity regarding climate, topography and vegetation, the forest-steppe zone has been divided into several regions. However, a continental-scale empirical delineation of the zone and its regions was missing until recently. Finally, a map has been proposed by Erdős et al. based on floristic composition, physiognomy, relief, and climate. By conducting predictive distribution modeling and hierarchical clustering, here we compared this expert delineation with the solely macroclimate-based predictions and clusters. By assessing the discrepancies, we located the areas where refinement of the delineation or the inclusion of non-macroclimatic predictors should be considered. Also, we identified the most important variables for predicting the existence of the Eurasian forest-steppe zone and its regions. The predicted probability of forest-steppe occurrence showed a very high agreement with the expert delineation. The previous delineation of the West Siberia region was confirmed by our results, while that of the Inner Asia region was the one least confirmed by the macroclimate-based model predictions. The appropriate delineation of the Southeast Europe region from the East Europe region should be refined by further research, and splitting the Far East region into a southern and northern subregion should also be considered. The main macroclimatic predictors of the potential distribution of the zone and its regions were potential evapotranspiration (zone and regions), annual mean temperature (regions), precipitation of driest quarter (regions) and precipitation of warmest quarter (zone), but the importance of climatic variables for prediction showed great variability among the fitted predictive distribution models. Forest plays a vital role in the global biogeochemical cycles through a high rate of carbon sequestration and harboring biodiversity. However, local species diversity is declining while also becoming increasingly homogenized across communities. Although effects of local biotic processes (e.g., species α-diversity and stand structural heterogeneity) and environmental factors on aboveground biomass (AGB) have been widely tested, there is a huge knowledge gap for the effect of regional biotic processes (i.e., taxonomic and functional β-diversity) in forests. Here, we hypothesized that regional and local environmental factors along with biotic processes jointly regulate AGB through species shifts in tropical forests. Using piecewise structural equation modeling (pSEM), we linked climatic water availability, soil fertility, stand structural heterogeneity (either tree DBH inequality, height inequality, or stand density), species α-diversity, taxonomic or functional β-diversity (and its two components; β-turnover and β-richness), and AGB across 189 inventory plots in tropical forests of Sri Lanka. Soil fertility and climatic water availability shaped local and regional biotic processes. Stand structural heterogeneity promoted species α-diversity but declined β-diversity (but increased β-taxonomic turnover). Species α-diversity and stand structural heterogeneity promoted AGB whereas taxonomic and functional β-diversity declined (but β-taxonomic turnover increased) AGB. The relationships of AGB with species α-diversity and β-diversity varied from significant to nonsignificant positive depending on the specific combinations of stand structural heterogeneity metrics used. This study shows that local biotic processes could increase AGB due to the local and regional niche complementarity effect whereas the regional biotic processes could restrict AGB due to the regional selection or functional redundancy effect under favorable environmental conditions. We argue that biotic homogenization, as well as drought conditions, may have strong divergent impacts on forest functions and that the impacts of tree diversity loss may greatly reduce carbon sequestration. A comprehensive quantification of global forest fragmentation is urgently required to guide forest protection, restoration and reforestation policies. Previous efforts focused on the static distribution patterns of forest remnants, potentially neglecting dynamic changes in forest landscapes. Here, we map global distribution of forest fragments and their temporal changes between 2000 and 2020. We find that forest landscapes in the tropics were relatively intact, yet these areas experienced the most severe fragmentation over the past two decades. In contrast, 75.1% of the world's forests experienced a decrease in fragmentation, and forest fragmentation in most fragmented temperate and subtropical regions, mainly in northern Eurasia and South China, declined between 2000 and 2020. We also identify eight modes of fragmentation that indicate different recovery or degradation states. Our findings underscore the need to curb deforestation and increase connectivity among forest fragments, especially in tropical areas. Forest losses and gains are highly dynamic processes. Efficient management of land use/land cover (LULC) features is vital for a balanced sustainable ecosystem. Thus, this work aimed to document the LULC changes in the less studied El Peñol-Guatapé reservoir, Antioquia, Colombia, especially in the reservoir area due to the construction of a hydro-electric power plant. For this study, Landsat images of 1977, 1986, 1997, and 2017 were used and the results indicated an increase in the settlement area and road networks by 0.10 and 0.60%, respectively, while during 1986 to 2017, cropland, plantation, dense forest, and open forest areas presented an increase of 0.52, 1.06, 2.87 and 2.61%, respectively. However, the marshy vegetation, scrub forest and fallow land decreased to − 0.51, − 3.79 and − 4.29%, respectively, in the same period. The water body before and after the completion of reservoir project denoted an increase from 13.1 km2 in 1977 to 45.7 km2 in 1986. This study provides a first-hand report on LULC dynamics in this tourism dominated municipalities that will serve as a reference for ecosystem management to reconcile the conflicts between different LULC classes in ecologically enriched regions. Climate change does not occur in the same way worldwide; its effects display regional differences. Some regions with unique characteristics may experience dramatic changes, leading to significant indications for the global climate. The Siberian high, a system of high atmospheric pressure, is formed on the Central Siberian Plateau, affecting a significant part of the northern hemisphere from November to February. Climate changes in this region have significant influences on the global climate cycle. Hence, determining the temperature trends of this region will yield key indicators for climate change studies. Remote sensing provides useful databases for climate change studies, surface temperatures, temporal and spatial resolutions, and numerous advantages. In the present study, we aimed to determine the temporal and spatial surface temperature trends of the Central Siberian Plateau. As our data source, we used MODIS (Aqua and Terra) satellite images for 8 days between 2002- and 2021. The measurements from the region were arranged as monthly and annual values, presented as mean, minimum, maximum, and standard deviation. Then, using these data, we obtained the mean values for the region and performed Mann–Kendall trend analyses. Accordingly, there was an overall increase of more than 2 °C in the study area. We performed a pixel-based Mann–Kendall trend test to reveal the mean annual temperatures and detect local changes. Tropical forest plantations play an important role in meeting global wood demand. While research has highlighted the ecological potential of mixed-species plantations, studies on the economic viability and management of such plantations are largely missing in the context of tropical plantation forestry. In this study, we estimated the economic potential and optimized the management of commercial mixed-species plantations of four tree species native to Central America (Dalbergia retusa, Dipteryx oleifera, Hieronyma alchorneoides, and Vochysia guatemalensis) and Teak (Tectona grandis). We combined the forest growth model 3-PGmix and detailed economic data for two plantation sites in Costa Rica to optimize the management of 11 different mixtures using a genetic optimization algorithm. We found that several of the modeled mixed-species stands can be highly profitable with net present values (NPV) up to 4821.2 USD/ha at an 8% discount rate, and internal rates of return up to 17% (under excellent site conditions). This indicates that the most profitable mixtures (e.g. of V. guatemalensis-D. oleifera or T. grandis-D. oleifera on excellent sites) could compete economically with conventional monoculture plantations such as Teak monocultures. Further, mixed stands can be managed based on the same simple even-aged management approaches currently applied in monoculture plantations if the specific management parameters are adapted. The optimized management parameters also lead to improved NPV of the modeled stands under alternative valuation assumptions but are site-specific. In the present study, we only considered financial benefits from timber production. However, establishing mixed-species plantations in the tropics could provide a wide range of ecosystem services including climate change mitigation and biodiversity protection. To study the effects of geoclimatic variables of provenances on growth phenotypes and selected plus provenances, over 3000 trees of 22-year-old Larix kaempferi were evaluated from trials established in two climate zones for provenance selection and to explore the influence of climate variables on provenance performance. The material was replicated plantings of 84 open pollinated families from six provenances distributed in the mountains of central Japan. Provenance variation was observed in most age groups and the heritability of growth traits showed large differences. The phenotypic maximum value of height and diameter were significantly positive with altitude, and mean annual precipitation being important factors. Diameter at breast height growth was significantly negative with altitude and spring rainfall. The Ina provenance of relatively high altitudes, was well adapted to a variety of climates. Warming temperatures in the circumpolar north have led to new discussions around climate-driven frontiers for agriculture. In this paper, we situate northern food systems in Canada within the corporate food regime and settler colonialism, and contend that an expansion of the conventional, industrial agriculture paradigm into the Canadian North would have significant socio-cultural and ecological consequences. We propose agroecology as an alternative framework uniquely accordant with northern contexts. In particular, we suggest that there are elements of agroecology that are already being practiced in northern Indigenous communities as part of traditional hunter-gatherer food systems. We present a framework for agroecology in the North and discuss its components of environmental stewardship, economies, knowledge, social dimensions and governance using examples from the Dehcho region, Northwest Territories, Canada. Finally, we discuss several challenges and cautions in creating policy around agroecology in the North and encourage community-based research in developing and testing this framework moving forward. Wildfires shape the composition and functioning of Mediterranean ecosystems, but we do not know how these ecosystems respond to both the higher fire recurrence and shorter recovery times expected for future climatic scenarios. We sampled 29 plots with different fire recurrences (from 0 to 4 fires over the past decades) and time since the last fire (up to 35 years; hereafter TSLF) in Southeast Spain, to assess the effect of fire recurrence and TSLF on 25 ecosystem attributes, five related ecosystem services (biodiversity conservation, carbon sequestration, disturbance regulation, food production, and supporting services), plus the synergies and trade-offs between them. High fire recurrence (number of fires) and TSLF interacted to determine ecosystem services but did not affect the synergies and trade-offs between them. Fire recurrence reduced many ecosystem functions and ecosystem multifunctionality. However, this effect dampened, and even became positive, for biodiversity conservation and food production services provided enough (> 20 years) time to recover. The combined effects of fire recurrence and TSLF, however, reduced carbon sequestration and had no overall effects on supporting services. Disturbance regulation, in turn, diminished drastically with the first fire, with no effect of further fires or their interaction with TSLF. Our results show which ecosystem services will suffer more from an increase in fire recurrence, and where restoration and management efforts should focus to maximize the provision of those services more demanded by stakeholders. Subarctic regions are particularly affected by global warming. As vegetation periods lengthen, boreal forests could gradually be converted into agricultural land. How land use alters the susceptibility of soil organic matter decomposition to rising temperatures or how changes in nutrient availability, such as nitrogen (N) fertilisation, affect carbon (C) cycling is unknown. Microbial carbon use efficiency (CUE) defines how much of the decomposed soil organic carbon is directed to growth or lost to the atmosphere. Here, we investigated the response of CUE (24 h) and soil organic matter decomposition (50 days) to + 10 °C warming and N addition in three subarctic soils derived from paired plots (forest, grassland, cropland) in the Yukon, Canada. Contrary to our literature-based expectations, boreal forest soils did not demonstrate the most sensitive response to warming and N addition. Temperature sensitivity was not affected by land-use type. In contrast to a generally assumed decline, short-term warming increased CUE by + 30%, which was positively correlated with microbial growth. N addition reduced overall CUE by − 7%, in contrast to the expectation that CUE would rise due to the alleviation of nutrient limitations. The response to N addition was negatively correlated with the ratio of fungi to bacteria, and presumably depended on the prevailing N-fertilisation regime. The temperature sensitivity of microbial metabolism was driven by site-specific parameters rather than by land-use type. Our results indicate that it may not be necessary to consider land use-specific temperature sensitivities when modelling soil organic carbon dynamics under future climate conditions. Species-specific anatomical and morphological characteristics of Pinus sylvestris and Larix sibirica needles were studied at different levels of tree stand pollution by aluminum smelter emissions. The anatomical characteristics of the needle were studied using light microscopy. The level of tree stand pollution was determined using the cluster analysis outcomes of the pollutant elements content (fluorine, sulfur, and heavy metals) in the needles. Four levels of tree stand pollution were separated: low, moderate, high, and critical, as well as background tree stand in unpolluted areas. It was found that the state of tree phytomass deteriorated with increasing levels of pollution (from low to critical): pine crown defoliation increased to 85%, and larch defoliation increased to 65%. The life span of pine needles was reduced to 2-3 years, with a background value of 6-7 years. The change of morphological parameters was more pronounced in P. sylvestris: the weight and length of the 2-year-old shoot decreased by 2.7-3.1 times compared to the background values; the weight of needles on the shoot and the number of needle pairs on the shoot-by 1.9-2.1 times. The length of the needle and shoot and the number of L. sibirica brachyblasts decreased by 1.8-1.9 times. The anatomical parameters of the needle also changed to a greater extent in P. sylvestris. Up to the high level of tree pollution, we observed a decrease in the cross-sectional area of the needle, central cylinder, vascular bundle, area and thickness of mesophyll, number and diameter of resin ducts by 18-66% compared to background values. At the critical pollution level, when the content of pollutant elements in pine needles reached maximum values, the anatomical parameters of the remaining few green needles were close to background values. In our opinion, this may be due to the activation of mechanisms aimed at maintaining the viability of trees. A reduction in thickness and area of assimilation tissue in the L. sibirica needle was detected only at the critical pollution level. An upward trend in these parameters was found at low, medium, and high pollution levels of tree stand, which may indicate an adaptive nature. The results suggested that at a similar pollution level of trees, the greatest amount of negative anatomical and morphological changes were recorded in pine needles, which indicates a greater sensitivity of this species to technogenic emissions., (© 2024. Context: Forest type (FT) classification provides useful information to ecologists and forest managers by representing similar sites based on species dominance. Various methods have been developed using stand-level or plot-level information, however, these classifications are not always effective at representing broader landscape patterns of species diversity. Objectives: We classified landscape-level FTs from species habitat models and compared against classifications intended for stand-level information. We used a departure score to assess potential changes to current FT from projected changes in climate and habitat suitability (HS). Methods: We applied a text mining algorithm, latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA), to 125 species HS models within the eastern United States to define 11 FTs under current conditions. We compared the LDA model against two summations of relative abundance. We then developed a departure score to characterize potential changes to current FTs under projected climate change. Results: The LDA model showed broad spatial agreement with summations of species relative abundance. However, LDA's landscape-level dominance of species differed from stand-level classifications of species summations. Varying degrees of pressure from climate change and HS indicated that future FTs could face conditions that result in departures. However, the overall departure scores tended to be lower due to reduced pressure from modeled changes in HS for much of the eastern US. Conclusions: LDA results are promising for classifying landscape-level FTs. Portraying potential changes in future FTs with departure scores may facilitate better management by aligning the spatial scales of information and not attributing changes to specific species or conditions. The resilience of northern ecosystems is being tested as the temporal and spatial distribution of wildfires change. Wildfires at treeline are predicted to facilitate a northward advance of boreal tree species, as the tundra is in close proximity to fire-adapted species climatically primed for range expansion. To study the effects of wildfire at treeline, we asked (1) how does wildfire change the environmental characteristics of treeline microsites, and (2) in the absence of viable seed limitation, do burned treelines increase the likelihood of tree seedling emergence? We measured numerous biotic and abiotic factors at three treelines in Yukon, Canada, each consisting of a burned and unburned treatment. Our observational study was paired with a manipulative seeding experiment of black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill) B.S.P.) and white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) to determine what environmental characteristics facilitated seedling emergence potential across site treatments. When comparing site treatments, results indicated that within the first two decades after wildfire, soil temperatures (GDD) were more extreme at burned treelines during the summer and winter. An examination of plot data in ordination space showed clear differences in organic layer depth and vegetation cover between treatments. While some of these changes would seem to benefit germination potential, spruce seedling emergence was extremely limited over the study period. Model results indicated little association between seedling emergence and recent fire; however, seedling emergence was positively associated with moss substrate found across treatments and reduced cover of tall multi-stemmed shrubs. We conclude that wildfire can create seedbed conditions that benefit seedling emergence, but low-severity wildfires create a variety of microsite conditions that limit overall availability of these seedbeds. In boreal forest ecosystems, permafrost and forest types are mutually interdependent; permafrost degradation impacts forest ecosystem structure and functions. The Xing'an permafrost in Northeast China is on the southern margin of the Eastern Asia latitudinal permafrost body. Under a warming climate, permafrost undergoes rapid and extensive degradation. In this study, the frost-number (Fn) model based on air temperatures and ground surface temperatures was used to predict the distribution of the Xing'an permafrost, and, temporal and spatial changes in air and ground-surface temperatures from 1961 to 2019 are analyzed. The results show that Northeast China has experienced a rapid and substantial climate warming over the past 60 years. The rises in mean annual air and mean annual ground-surface temperatures were higher in permafrost zones than those in the seasonal frost zone. The frost numbers of air and ground-surface temperatures were calculated for determining the southern limit of latitudinal permafrost and for permafrost zonation. The southern limits of discontinuous permafrost, sporadic permafrost, and latitudinal permafrost moved northward significantly. According to the air-temperature frost-number criteria for permafrost zoning, compared with that in the 1960s, the extent of Xing'an permafrost in Northeast China had decreased by 40.6% by the 2010s. With an average rate of increase in mean annual air temperatures at 0.03 °C a−1, the extent of permafrost in Northeast China will decrease to 26.42 × 104 by 2020, 14.69 × 104 by 2040 and to 11.24 × 104 km2 by 2050. According to the ground-surface temperature frost-number criteria, the southern limit of latitudinal permafrost was at the 0.463. From the 1960s to the 2010s, the extent of latitudinal permafrost declined significantly. Due to the nature of the ecosystem-protected Xing'an-Baikal permafrost, management and protection (e.g., more prudent and effective forest fire management and proper logging of forests) of the Xing'an permafrost eco-environment should be strengthened. In this study, we estimated the technoeconomic availability of three types of dead trees, namely commercially fallen, normally fallen, and standing, in Mongolian subgroups. For dead trees of three major Mongolian tree species (Siberian larch, Scotch pine, and Asian white birch), lumber, firewood, and unused material as sources of energy were quantified and operational costs (marking, felling, skidding, transporting, loading/unloading, processing, and stumpage prices) were estimated. As a result, most Mongolian subgroups were profitable and suitable for the harvest of unused materials. Moreover, unused materials of dead trees can substitute nearly 5.45 million tons of coal, although it is not sufficient to meet the 0.6 years of coal demand across Mongolia. However, in some places, unused dead wood materials can completely substitute coal for decades. Therefore, although the heat utilization of woody biomass is not suitable for Mongolia as a whole, it is feasible in specific regions where forest resources are abundant, such as some Mongolian sub-provinces. Promoting the use of dead trees can reduce the risk of damage caused by wildfires and pests, which are serious problems in Mongolia, and keep the forests healthy. Furthermore, unused materials can generate new income opportunities, and the forest land can be well prepared by removing dead trees to promote planting for sustainable forest management. Wildfire disturbance is important for tree regeneration in boreal ecosystems. A considerable amount of literature has been published on how wildfires affect boreal forest regeneration. However, we lack understanding about how soil-mediated effects of fire disturbance on seedlings occur via soil abiotic properties versus soil biota. We collected soil from stands with three different severities of burning (high, low and unburned) and conducted two greenhouse experiments to explore how seedlings of tree species (Betula pendula, Pinus sylvestris and Picea abies) performed in live soils and in sterilized soil inoculated by live soil from each of the three burning severities. Seedlings grown in live soil grew best in unburned soil. When sterilized soils were reinoculated with live soil, seedlings of P. abies and P. sylvestris grew better in soil from low burn severity stands than soil from either high severity or unburned stands, demonstrating that fire disturbance may favor post-fire regeneration of conifers in part due to the presence of soil biota that persists when fire severity is low or recovers quickly post-fire. Betula pendula did not respond to soil biota and was instead driven by changes in abiotic soil properties following fire. Our study provides strong evidence that high fire severity creates soil conditions that are adverse for seedling regeneration, but that low burn severity promotes soil biota that stimulates growth and potential regeneration of conifers. It also shows that species-specific responses to abiotic and biotic soil characteristics are altered by variation in fire severity. This has important implications for tree regeneration because it points to the role of plant–soil–microbial feedbacks in promoting successful establishment, and potentially successional trajectories and species dominance in boreal forests in the future as fire regimes become increasingly severe through climate change. Homoeologous group 5 chromosomes of wheat possess genes that have a significant influence on the time of earing, growth habit (Vrn), frost resistance (Fr) and winter hardiness. The Vrn-A1/Fr-A1, Vrn-B1/Fr-B1 and Vrn-D1/Fr-D1 genes are assigned to the long arm of the 5A, 5B and 5D chromosomes, respectively. In rye (Secale cereale L.), Vrn-R1/Fr-R1 genes, which determine the growth habit and cold/frost resistance, are localized on chromosome 5RL. To investigate the effect of individual chromosomes on winter hardiness, as well as their interactions with the background, wheat-rye 5R(5A)-substituted lines based on winter and spring wheats were used in this study. We created the wheat-rye 5R(5A) substitution lines based on the winter wheats cvs. 'Filatovka' and 'Ulʼynovka' and based on the spring wheats cvs. 'Rang' and 'Mironovskaya krupnozernaya' to identify the role of rye chromosome 5R in controlling the growth habit and winter hardiness. Two cultivars of rye—'Onokhoiskaya' (spring habit) and 'Vietnamskaya Mestnaya'—are the source of chromosome 5R. We do not know the growth habit of rye 'Vietnamskaya Mestnaya'. Field experiments were carried out over three years during the winters of 2015/2016, 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 in the Novosibirsk Region. It was found that 5R(5A) substitution lines for spring cvs. 'Rang' and 'Mironovskaya krupnozernaya', with the participation of the spring rye 'Onokhoiskaya', have a winter habit. The wheat-rye 5R(5A) lines for winter cvs. 'Ul'yanovka' and 'Filatovka', with the participation of rye 'Vietnamskaya Mestnaya', have a facultative habit. These substituted lines can grow in both spring and autumn sowing. The evaluation of winter hardiness conducted was carried out by means of visual scoring on a 1–9 score basis. All wheat-rye-substituted lines survived in the conditions of the Novosibirsk Region. Winter hardiness scores ranged from 5 to 6 after the 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 winters, whereas winter hardiness scores varied from 8 to 9 after the 2017/2018 winter. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Global climate change impacts the functioning and productivity of forest ecosystems at various spatiotemporal scales across a wide range of biomes. Although summer temperatures are considered the main driver of boreal tree growth, the importance of soil moisture availability is likely to rise with decreasing latitude and increasing warming. Here, we combine dendrochronological measurements with evidence from tree growth modeling and remote sensing to quantify the effect of climate on phenology and productivity of Scots pines (Pinus sylvestris L.) in southern Siberia. Between 1960 and 2017, pine ring widths along a latitudinal transect from 53° to 56°N were mainly controlled by the availability of summer soil moisture. This finding challenges the common belief that summer temperatures are the predominant growth control in boreal forests. Moreover, we show that earlier growing season onsets can compensate for warming-induced drought stress. Despite the phenotypic plasticity of Scots pines to adapt to warmer and drier conditions, we speculate that predicted climate change will likely exceed the species' physiological tolerance in much of Eurasia's forest-steppe by the end of the twenty-first century. Forest site (FS) and meteorological conditions are recognized as the main factors affecting tree growth and whole-stand sustainability. This study aims to detect the combined effects of FS and meteorological conditions on tree ring formation of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), the most common tree species in Lithuania and hemi-boreal forests of northeastern Europe. We used data on stand structure and productivity from the Lithuanian National Forest Inventory (NFI) and stem radial increment series of dominating trees during the period 1993-2012 collected since 2013. Pine stem basal area increment (BAI) was chosen as the response variable, while temperature in March (°C) and precipitation in June (mm) were used as predictor variables, as they best express the effect of climate change on Lithuanian forests. We simulated the effects on dominating pine annual increment of deciduous tree species, mainly Betula sp. and the level of soil moisture and fertility, accounting in addition for the random effects of NFI network tract, plot direction, and tree number. A nonlinear mixed-effects model explained up to 68% of the variation in the BAI of pine trees. The annual pine trees BAI increased with the increase in the proportion of deciduous trees in pine stands. Increases in temperature and precipitation in considered months reinforced this positive effect on pine BAI, especially in mature pine stands in temporarily waterlogged meso-eutrophic FSs on mineral soils. A negative effect of deciduous trees on pine stem increment was observed only in nutrient-rich eutrophic and drained peatland FSs. Forestry treatments directed towards the increase in deciduous tree proportion in the most common normal or temporarily waterlogged meso-eutrophic and oligotrophic pine stands might increase the biodiversity and productivity of pine stands, and their sustainability in future climate change scenarios. Application of paleoenvironmental approaches provides insight into the magnitude and timing of responses to climate warming in aquatic-ecosystems of northern Canada. We examined subfossil biological (Diptera:Chironomidae) and geochemical indicators (organic carbon and elemental nitrogen and stable isotope composition) in a sediment core from Buckland Lake, northern Manitoba, to assess the influence of recent warming (1981–2011) in the central subarctic region of Canada. The earlier part of the paleolimnological record (1830–1980) was characterized by relatively low chironomid diversity (N2 ~ 6), consisting primarily of profundal taxa (Orthocladius consobrinus and Chironomus), low organic matter content of sediments (< 12%), low C:N ratios (< 9), and high δ15N values (> 3‰), indicative of a cold-water environment with low nitrogen demand. Between 1910 and 1980, there was a decline in profundal taxa, with small gradual increases in littoral taxa, such as Cladotanytarsus mancus-group. Post-1980 sediment core intervals had distinct geochemistry, with declines in δ13Corg from − 27.5‰ to almost − 29‰, consistent with warming, increased terrestrial influence, and increased snowfall and runoff. We found substantial inferred warming (+ 1–2 °C), with several chironomid-inferred temperatures nearly 3 °C warmer than typical pre-1980 inferences. Concurrently, several warm-water-adapted littoral chironomid taxa (Cladopelma, Cryptochironomus, Polypedilum) recorded increases. The post-1990 records reflected continued increases in warm-water taxa, changes in the benthic:pelagic trophic structure, and reversal of previous trends in the δ13Corg, %Organic Carbon, and δ15N profiles, suggestive of increased aquatic productivity. The meteorological station at Gillam, Manitoba, also recorded warming (1.5 °C) and a reduction in snowfall during that time period. A reduction in spring recharge may have increased littoral habitat associated with lake-level drawdown. The climate-driven shift observed ~ 1980 is in generally good agreement with other regional analyses, which show regime shifts occurred ~ 1995. The earlier lake response (~ 1980), however, demonstrates the role of increased catchment-mediated influences on northern boreal lake productivity that may only appear in records with sufficiently high resolution and multiple paleolimnological indicators. Climate change will alter natural areas on a global scale within the next century. In areas vulnerable to climate change, scientists are regularly challenged to justify the resources needed for research and conservation. We face what may seem like a losing battle, especially in low-lying coastal areas where sea-level rise is predicted to severely degrade or destroy many ecosystems. Using sea-level rise in the low-elevation state of Florida, USA, as a case study, we argue that it is critical to remain engaged in the research, restoration, and conservation of natural areas threatened by climate change for as long as possible. These areas will continue to provide invaluable ecological and societal benefits. Additionally, uncertainty surrounding climate change forecasts and their ecological impact leaves room for optimism, research, and actions that are necessary for developing adaptation plans and mitigating further sea-level rise and other consequences of climate change. We urge scientists and particularly students beginning their careers not to forego research and conservation efforts of these imperiled lands but to face this unprecedented challenge with determination, creativity, and solution-based strategies. Key message: Near upper forest line, values of conifer wood anatomical traits are species-specific, but relationships among traits are common. Growing season temperature significantly impacts wood anatomy only in its extremes. Quantitative wood anatomy can provide detailed insight into adaptation of trees to changing environment, especially on the borders of species distribution ranges. This study investigated wood anatomy of Pinus sylvestris L., Pinus sibirica Du Tour, and Picea obovata Ledeb. near the forest line in the Western Sayan Mountains, where local climate changes rapidly. Anatomical traits reflecting three developmental stages of conifer tracheids (division = cell number, cell enlargement = radial diameter, and secondary wall deposition = cell wall thickness) were calculated for earlywood, latewood and total tree ring over 50 years. Similar earlywood anatomical structure and low between-trait correlations (r = 0.21...67) were observed in all species, which supports prevalence of external impact on its formation, i.e. that shared habitat, climate, and similar habitus provide common trade-off between hydraulic efficiency and safety. Also, stronger nonlinearity of relationship between cell number and radial diameter in earlywood decreased correlations between them. In latewood, anatomical traits are strongly interconnected (r = 0.63...93) for all species. However, Siberian pine has significantly less pronounced latewood; later switch from earlywood and different strategy of carbon allocation are proposed as possible reasons. Length of vegetative season and sum of temperatures above thresholds 5 °C and 8 °C have no significant correlations with anatomical traits, but extremes of these temperature variables led to forming more pronounced latewood (higher proportion of latewood cells with thicker walls) during warm/long vegetative seasons than during short/cool ones. Background: The prediction of biogeographical patterns from a large number of driving factors with complex interactions, correlations and non-linear dependences require advanced analytical methods and modeling tools. This study compares different statistical and machine learning-based models for predicting fungal productivity biogeographical patterns as a case study for the thorough assessment of the performance of alternative modeling approaches to provide accurate and ecologically-consistent predictions. Methods: We evaluated and compared the performance of two statistical modeling techniques, namely, generalized linear mixed models and geographically weighted regression, and four techniques based on different machine learning algorithms, namely, random forest, extreme gradient boosting, support vector machine and artificial neural network to predict fungal productivity. Model evaluation was conducted using a systematic methodology combining random, spatial and environmental blocking together with the assessment of the ecological consistency of spatially-explicit model predictions according to scientific knowledge. Results: Fungal productivity predictions were sensitive to the modeling approach and the number of predictors used. Moreover, the importance assigned to different predictors varied between machine learning modeling approaches. Decision tree-based models increased prediction accuracy by more than 10% compared to other machine learning approaches, and by more than 20% compared to statistical models, and resulted in higher ecological consistence of the predicted biogeographical patterns of fungal productivity. Conclusions: Decision tree-based models were the best approach for prediction both in sampling-like environments as well as in extrapolation beyond the spatial and climatic range of the modeling data. In this study, we show that proper variable selection is crucial to create robust models for extrapolation in biophysically differentiated areas. This allows for reducing the dimensions of the ecosystem space described by the predictors of the models, resulting in higher similarity between the modeling data and the environmental conditions over the whole study area. When dealing with spatial-temporal data in the analysis of biogeographical patterns, environmental blocking is postulated as a highly informative technique to be used in cross-validation to assess the prediction error over larger scales. The proposed Biology Integration Institute will bring together two major research institutions in the Upper Midwest--the University of Minnesota (UMN) and University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW)--to investigate the causes and consequences of plant biodiversity across scales in a rapidly changing world--from genes and molecules within cells and tissues to communities, ecosystems, landscapes and the biosphere. The Institute focuses on plant biodiversity, defined broadly to encompass the heterogeneity within life that occurs from the smallest to the largest biological scales. A premise of the Institute is that life is envisioned as occurring at different scales nested within several contrasting conceptions of biological hierarchies, defined by the separate but related fields of physiology, evolutionary biology and ecology. The Institute will emphasize the use of 'spectral biology'--detection of biological properties based on the interaction of light energy with matter--and process-oriented predictive models to investigate the processes by which biological components at one scale give rise to emergent properties at higher scales. Through an iterative process that harnesses cutting edge technologies to observe a suite of carefully designed empirical systems--including the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) and some of the world's longest running and state-of-the-art global change experiments--the Institute will advance biological understanding and theory of the causes and consequences of changes in biodiversity and at the interface of plant physiology, ecology and evolution. INTELLECTUAL MERIT: The Institute brings together a diverse, gender-balanced and highly productive team with significant leadership experience that spans biological disciplines and career stages and is poised to integrate biology in new ways. Together, the team will harness the potential of spectral biology, experiments, observations and synthetic modeling in a manner never before possible to transform understanding of how variation within and among biological scales drives plant and ecosystem responses to global change over diurnal, seasonal and millennial time scales. In doing so, it will use and advance state-of-the-art theory. The institute team posits that the designed projects will unearth transformative understanding and biological rules at each of the various scales that will enable an unprecedented capacity to discern the linkages between physiological, ecological and evolutionary processes in relation to the multi-dimensional nature of biodiversity in this time of massive planetary change. A strength of the proposed Institute is that it leverages prior federal investments in research and formalizes partnerships with foreign institutions heavily invested in related biodiversity research. Most of the planned projects leverage existing research initiatives, infrastructure, working groups, experiments, training programs, and public outreach infrastructure, all of which are already highly synergistic and collaborative, and will bring together members of the overall research and training team. BROADER IMPACTS: A central goal of the proposed Institute is to train the next generation of diverse integrative biologists. Post-doctoral, graduate student and undergraduate trainees, recruited from nontraditional and underrepresented groups, including through formal engagement with Native American communities, will receive a range of mentoring and training opportunities. Annual summer training workshops will be offered at UMN and UW as well as training experiences with the Global Change and Biodiversity Research Priority Program (URPP-GCB) at the University of Zurich (UZH) and through the Canadian Airborne Biodiversity Observatory (CABO). The Institute will engage diverse K-12 audiences, the general public and Native American communities through Market Science modules, Minute Earth videos, a museum exhibit and public engagement and educational activities through the Bell Museum of Natural History, the Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve (CCESR) and the Wisconsin Tribal Conservation Association. Context: Human-dominated landscapes in the tropics need to be managed for biodiversity and the maintenance of ecosystem services (ES). Nevertheless, integrating both biodiversity conservation and ES management remains a challenge. Objectives: This study aimed to quantify woody plant species diversity and associated ES in farmland and forests, and investigate the relationship between species and ES diversity. Methods: The study was conducted in southwestern Ethiopia. We surveyed woody plants in 181 20 m by 20 m plots in farmland, forest with, and forest without coffee management. We also interviewed 180 randomly selected households about woody plant benefits. We then (a) quantified species and ES diversity; and (b) investigated the relationship between species and ES diversity. Results: We recorded 128 woody plant species in total. Most ES were available in all land uses, although they differed in their mean availability. ES composition was significantly different among land uses. ES diversity was positively related with species diversity in all land uses. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that all examined land-use types were multifunctional in terms of key ES provided by woody plants and that maintaining high species diversity also benefits ES diversity. Given these findings, we suggest to: (1) strengthen landscape multifunctionality by drawing on the positive relationship between biodiversity and ES diversity; (2) devise conservation policies that encompass entire landscape mosaics and enhance co-benefits of conservation and ES provision across land uses; and (3) conduct further social–ecological studies that use mixed data to elicit socially relevant relationships between biodiversity and ES diversity. Arctic and subarctic ecosystems are experiencing substantial changes in hydrology, vegetation, permafrost conditions, and carbon cycling, in response to climatic change and other anthropogenic drivers, and these changes are likely to continue over this century. The total magnitude of these changes results from multiple interactions among these drivers. Field measurements can address the overall responses to different changing drivers, but are less capable of quantifying the interactions among them. Currently, a comprehensive assessment of the drivers of ecosystem changes, and the magnitude of their direct and indirect impacts on subarctic ecosystems, is missing. The Torneträsk area, in the Swedish subarctic, has an unrivalled history of environmental observation over 100 years, and is one of the most studied sites in the Arctic. In this study, we summarize and rank the drivers of ecosystem change in the Torneträsk area, and propose research priorities identified, by expert assessment, to improve predictions of ecosystem changes. The research priorities identified include understanding impacts on ecosystems brought on by altered frequency and intensity of winter warming events, evapotranspiration rates, rainfall, duration of snow cover and lake-ice, changed soil moisture, and droughts. This case study can help us understand the ongoing ecosystem changes occurring in the Torneträsk area, and contribute to improve predictions of future ecosystem changes at a larger scale.
