A general method for calculating magnetic susceptibility ($\chi$) in dielectrics within a single choice of magnetic gauge for the whole crystal is presented. On the basis of the method, accounting for all contributions to the Van Vleck paramagnetism and Langevin (Larmore) diamagnetism, a full-scale ab initio calculation of $\chi$ in diamond is performed. Unfamiliar contributions to $\chi$ includes a Van Vleck contribution from the interstitial region and an offset contribution from the muffin-tin (MT) sphere, appearing due to the change of the MT-sphere magnetic moment when the sphere is displaced from the origin. Although the Langevin diamagnetism explicitly depends on the choice of the origin, its sum with the Van Vleck term remains invariant, which is demonstrated on the basis of the gauge invariance of the magnetic vector potential. The derived expressions have been applied to ab initio calculations of magnetic susceptibility of the crystalline diamond within the linear augmented plane wave method (LAPW). With the diamond unit cell having the inversion symmetry, the magnetic (Van Vleck) calculations require the irreducible part of the Brillouin zone accounting for half of the whole zone, i.e. 24 times larger than that in the absence of magnetic field. Investigating possible anisotropy of $\chi$, we calculate it for 74 different directions of H (belonging to Lebedev surface grid points), and demonstrate that the actual value of $\chi$ remain isotropic. The obtained volume magnetic susceptibility in diamond lies in the range $16.27-16.72 (with the Langevin contribution -39.22-39.94 and the Van Vleck contribution -22.94-23.22), in units 10^{-7}, which compares well with the experimental data and other calculations.

Reduced transmon qubit $T_1$ coherence times have been linked to the amorphous oxide layers formed by thin film capacitors during processing. Because Ta or Ta capped Nb capacitors exhibit overall superior qubit performance to those fabricated with Nb capacitors, it has been hypothesized that the amorphous, non-stoichiometric Ta$_2$O$_{5-x}$ oxide is less lossy than its Nb$_2$O$_{5-x}$ counterpart. The origins of what makes amorphous Ta$_2$O$_{5-x}$ less susceptible to accepted decoherence channels is unknown. Here we establish the microscopic features of amorphous Nb$_2$O$_{5-x}$ and Ta$_2$O$_{5-x}$ using a combination of \textit{ab initio} molecular dynamics and density functional theory calculations. Our simulations establish that oxygen deficiency is less likely to occur in amorphous Ta$_2$O$_{5-x}$ than in Nb$_2$O$_{5-x}$ for $0\le x \le 0.25$ and that at a given level of oxygen deficiency the formation of metal Ta-Ta bonds is enhanced. These bonds, which are accommodated by structural flaws in the amorphous network, capture electrons better than in amorphous Nb$_2$O$_{5-x}$. These thermochemical differences quench or highly suppress magnetic moments in amorphous Ta$_2$O$_{5-x}$ and eliminate a potential source of quasiparticles and magnetic flux noise. Our calculations also show that hyperfine couplings between Nb nuclei and local magnetic moments in Nb$_2$O$_{5-x}$ could form "two-level systems" (TLS) or "two-level fluctuators" (TLF) with energy splittings of 100-1000 MHz or higher. This reveals a new TLS mechanism in amorphous Nb$_2$O$_{5-x}$ oxide layers that is unlikely in Ta$_2$O$_{5-x}$. In the past decade, photo-induced superconducting-like behaviors have been reported in a number of materials driven by intense pump fields. Of particular interest is the high-$T_c$ cuprate $\rm Y Ba_2 Cu_2 O_{6+x}$, where such effect has been reported up to the so-called pseudogap temperature $T^* \sim 300-400$ K. In a recent tour-de-force experiment, a transient magnetic field which is proportional to and in the same direction of an applied field has been observed outside the sample, suggestive of flux exclusion due to the Meissner effect. In this paper, we point out that the transient magnetic field could be explained by a model of bilayers of copper-oxygen planes with a local superconducting phase variable persisting up to the pseudo-gap temperature at equilibrium. Under pumping, the time evolution is described by a driven sine-Gordon equation. In the presence of an external magnetic field, this model exhibits a novel instability which amplifies the current at the edges of the bilayer formed by defects or grain boundaries, producing a giant paramagnetic magnetization in the same direction as the applied field. We present how this scenario can fit most of the available data and propose additional experimental tests which can distinguish our proposal from the Meissner flux exclusion scenario. To the extent that this model can account for the data, we conclude that the experiments have the important consequence of revealing the presence of local pairing in the pseudogap phase. Unconventional orbital paramagnetism without enhancement of the density of states was recently discovered in the nodal-line semimetal ZrSiS. Here, we propose a novel interband mechanism of orbital paramagnetism associated with the negative curvature of energy dispersions, which successfully explains the observed anomalous orbital paramagnetism. This negative curvature arises from energy fluctuations along the nodal line, inherent in realistic nodal-line materials. Our new mechanism indicates that such orbital paramagnetism serves as strong evidence for the existence of nodal lines not only in ZrSiS but potentially in various other nodal-line materials as well.

$\require{mhchem}$The square-kagome lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet is a highly frustrated Hamiltonian whose material realizations have been scarce. We theoretically investigate the recently synthesized $\ce{Na6Cu7BiO4(PO4)4Cl3}$ where a Cu$^{2+}$ spin-$1/2$ square-kagome lattice (with six site unit cell) is decorated by a seventh magnetic site alternatingly above and below the layers. The material does not show any sign of long-range magnetic order down to 50 mK despite a Curie-Weiss temperature of $-212$ K indicating a quantum paramagnetic phase. Our DFT energy mapping elicits a purely antiferromagnetic Hamiltonian that features longer range exchange interactions beyond the pure square-kagome model and, importantly, we find the seventh site to be strongly coupled to the plane. We combine two variational Monte Carlo approaches, pseudo-fermion/Majorana functional renormalization group and Schwinger-Boson mean field calculations to show that the complex Hamiltonian of $\ce{Na6Cu7BiO4(PO4)4Cl3}$ still features a nonmagnetic ground state. We explain how the seventh Cu$^{2+}$ site actually aids the stabilization of the disordered state. For the quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet with spin-$j$ on a bipartite, balanced graph, the Lieb-Mattis theorem, ``Ordering of energy levels,'' guarantees that the ground state is a spin singlet, and moreover, defining $E^{\textrm{AF}}_{\min}(S)$ to be the minimum eigenvalue of the Hamiltonian in the invariant subspace consisting of all spin $S$ vectors, $\boldsymbol{S}_{\mathrm{tot}}^2 \psi = S(S+1)\psi$, the function $E^{\textrm{AF}}_{\min}(S)$ is monotonically increasing for $0\leq S\leq j|\mathcal{V}|$. For the ferromagnet, the absolute ground state is $E_{\min}^{\textrm{FM}}(j|\mathcal{V}|)$. We say that the graph satisfies ``ferromagnetic ordering of energy levels'' at order $n$, or FOEL-$n$, if two properties hold: (1) $E_{\min}^{\textrm{FM}}(j|\mathcal{V}|)\leq \dots \leq E_{\min}^{\mathrm{FM}}(j|\mathcal{V}|-n)$, and (2) $E_{\min}^{\mathrm{FM}}(j|\mathcal{V}|-n)\leq E_{\min}^{\mathrm{FM}}(j|\mathcal{V}|-m)$ for all $m\geq n$. This paper presents a dual gravity model for a (2+1)-dimensional system with a limit on finite charge density and temperature, which will be used to study the properties of the holographic phase transition to paramagnetism-ferromagnetism in the presence of Horndeski gravity terms. In our model, the non-zero charge density is supported by a magnetic field. As a result, the radius $\rho/B$ indicates a localized condensate, as we increase the Horndeski gravity parameter, that is represented by $\gamma$. Furthermore, such condensate shows quantum Hall-type behavior. This radius is also inversely related to the total action coefficients of our model. It was observed that increasing the Horndeski parameter decreases the critical temperature of the holographic model and leads to the harder formation of the magnetic moment at the bottom of the black hole. However, when removing the magnetic field, the ferromagnetic material presents a disorder of its magnetic moments, which is observed through the entropy of the system. We introduce a gauge-invariant model of planar, square molecules coupled to a quantized spatially-varying cavity electromagnetic vector potential A(r). Specifically, we choose a temporally chiral cavity hosting a uniform magnetic field B, as this is the simplest instance in which a transverse spatially-varying A(r) is at play. We show that when the molecules are in the Van Vleck paramagnetic regime, an equilibrium quantum phase transition to a photon condensate state occurs., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures

By substituting S into single-layer FeSe/SrTiO3, chemical pressure is applied to tune its paramagnetic state that is modeled as an incoherent superposition of spin-spiral states. The resulting electronic bands resemble an ordered checkerboard antiferromagnetic structure, consistent with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy reveals a gap evolving from U-shaped for FeSe to V-shaped for FeS with decreasing size, attributed to a d-wave superconducting state for which nodes emerge once the gap size is smaller than the effective spin-orbit coupling., Comment: need revision

The 4f^6 systems were hypothesized to possess non-magnetic (J = 0) ground state. However, all such systems have distinctly shown the presence of non-zero effective moment. In this context, a rare earth orthovanadate EuVO4, which in spite of having J = 0 ground state, possess non-zero magnetic moment. Our studies reveal three different regions in this compound, boundaries of which are demarcated from susceptibility data. The high temperature susceptibility exhibits linear dependence on temperature which arises due to tetragonal crystal field, followed by a temperature independent plateau like region, ascribed to Van Vleck paramagnetism. At low temperatures, Curie-Weiss like behaviour is observed, which arise due to magnetic Eu2+ moments and results in non-zero effective moment. Our analysis reveals that the separation ({\lambda}) between the J = 0 and J = 1 states decreases on increasing the external magnetic field which leads to an enhanced effective moment at higher fields.

Little is so far known about the magnetism of the $\rm A_2B_2O_7$ monoclinic layered perovskites that replace the spin-ice supporting pyrochlore structure for $r_A/r_B>1.78$. We show that high quality monoclinic Pr$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ single crystals with a three-dimensional network of non-Kramers Pr$^{3+}$ ions that interact through edge-sharing super-exchange interactions, form a singlet ground state quantum paramagnet that does not undergo any magnetic phase transitions down to at least 1.8 K. The chemical phase stability, structure, and magnetic properties of the layered perovskite Pr$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ were investigated using x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and magnetization measurements. Synthesis of polycrystalline samples with the nominal compositions of Pr$_2$Ti$_{2+x}$O$_7$ ($-0.16 \leq x \leq 0.16$) showed that deviations from the Pr$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ stoichiometry lead to secondary phases of related, structures including the perovskite phase Pr$_{2/3}$TiO$_3$ and the orthorhombic phases Pr$_4$Ti$_9$O$_{24}$ and Pr$_2$TiO$_5$. No indications of site disordering (stuffing and anti-stuffing) or vacancy defects were observed in the Pr$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ majority phase. A procedure for growth of high-structural-quality, stoichiometric single crystals of Pr$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ by the traveling solvent floating zone (TSFZ) method is reported. Thermo-magnetic measurements of single-crystalline Pr$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ reveal an isolated singlet ground state that we associate with the low symmetry crystal electric field environments that split the $2J+1=9$-fold degenerate spin-orbital multiplets of the four differently coordinated Pr$^{3+}$ ions into 36 isolated singlets resulting in an anisotropic temperature independent van-Vleck susceptibility at low $T$. A small isotropic Curie term is associated with 0.96(2)\% non-interacting Pr$^{4+}$ impurities., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, 6 tables

We use a combination of density functional theory and Monte Carlo calculations to calculate the surface magnetization in magnetoelectric $\mathrm{Cr_2O_3}$ at finite temperatures. Such antiferromagnets, lacking both inversion and time-reversal symmetries, are required by symmetry to posses an uncompensated magnetization density on particular surface terminations. Here, we first show that the uppermost layer of magnetic moments on the $(001)$ surface remain paramagnetic at the bulk N\'{e}el temperature, bringing the theoretical estimate of surface magnetization density in line with experiment. We demonstrate that the lower surface ordering temperature compared to bulk is a generic feature of surface magnetization when the termination reduces the effective Heisenberg coupling. We then propose two methods by which the surface magnetization in $\mathrm{Cr_2O_3}$ could be stabilised at higher temperatures. Specifically, we show that the effective coupling of surface magnetic ions can be drastically increased either by a different choice of surface Miller plane, or by $\mathrm{Fe}$ doping. We study electron correlations and their impact on magnetic properties of bcc vanadium by a combination of density functional and dynamical mean-field theory. The calculated uniform magnetic susceptibility {in bcc structure} is of Pauli type at low temperatures, while it obeys the Curie-Weiss law at higher temperatures. Thus, we qualitatively reproduce the experimental temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility without introducing the martensitic phase transition. Our results for local spin-spin correlation function and local susceptibility reveal that the Curie-Weiss behavior appears due to partial formation of local magnetic moments, which originate from $t_{2g}$ states and occur due to local spin correlations caused by Hund's rule coupling. At the same time, the fermionic quasiparticles remain well-defined, while the formation of local moments is accompanied by a deviation from the Fermi-liquid behavior. In particular, the self-energy of the $t_{2g}$ states shows the non-analytic frequency dependence, which is a characteristic of the spin-freezing behavior, while the quasiparticle damping changes approximately linearly with temperature in the intermediate temperature range $200$--$700$~K. By analyzing the momentum dependence of static magnetic susceptibility, we find incommensurate magnetic correlations, which may provide a mechanism for unconventional superconductivity at low temperatures., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures

A polycrystalline sample of the hyperhoneycomb iridate $\beta$-ZnIrO$_3$ was synthesized via a topochemical reaction, and its structural, magnetic, and thermodynamic properties were investigated. The magnetization and heat capacity data show the absence of long-range magnetic order at least down to 2 K. A positive Curie-Weiss temperature $\theta_W \sim 45$ K probed by the temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility indicates that a Kitaev interaction is dominant. These observations suggest that a quantum spin liquid may have been realized. Furthermore, the observation of linear temperature-dependent contribution to the heat capacity with no magnetic field effect evidences gapless excitation. These facts are surprisingly contrary to the chemical disorder evidenced by the crystallographic analysis. In a recent manuscript, the discovery of a new phenomenon in glasses has been reported: {\it glass paramagnetism}, that is the intrinsic magnetisation developed by a substance that has failed to crystallise in a temperature quench when placed in an external magnetic field. The field- ($H$) and especially the temperature- ($T$) dependence of the intrinsic magnetisation $M_{intr}=M_{intr}(H,T)$ is very unexpected, with broad peaks developing for high $H/T$ and marked $T$- oscillations at fixed $H$ for intermediate-to-high temperatures. In this work we present details on the samples, new data for other glassy systems and especially the theoretical background that is capable of explaining most of the experimental data. New phenomena are however emerging from these data, for example a deviation from the Curie-like behaviour of the magnetic susceptibility ($M_{intr}/H$ at low fields) due to the glassy structure alone as well as evidence for new and intriguing quantum coherence effects at the lowest temperatures., Comment: 29 pages, 24 figures, submitted for publication

We experimentally demonstrate that some commonly used materials such as cellulose acetate and chitin which are traditionally considered to be non-magnetic show super strong paramagnetism in aqueous solutions under ambient conditions when they are agglomerated by nanoparticles. Theoretical computations show that strongly polar functional groups can reduce the potential barrier for a singlet-triplet interconversion with the help of surrounding water, inducing the magnetic moments. These magnetic moments distributed on the surfaces of the nanoparticles, which make a large number of magnetic moments gather in a very small space, greatly enhance the alignment of the moments along and amplify the effect of the external magnetic field, resulting in the super strong paramagnetism. Our findings suggest that the polar functional group may always induce paramagnetism and the magnetic effect may be universal as the electric effects since the polarization is very common in materials.

It has long remained elusive whether CuCo$_{2}$S$_{4}$ thiospinel shows bulk superconductivity. Here we clarify the issue by studying on the samples of sulfur-deficient CuCo$_{2}$S$_{3.7}$ and sulfurized CuCo$_{2}$S$_{4}$. The sample CuCo$_{2}$S$_{3.7}$ has a smaller lattice constant of $a=9.454$ {\AA}, and it is not superconducting down to 1.8 K. After a full sulfurization, the $a$ axis of the thiospinel phase increases to 9.475 {\AA}, and the thiospinel becomes nearly stoichiometric CuCo$_{2}$S$_{4}$, although a secondary phase of slightly Cu-doped CoS$_2$ forms. Bulk superconductivity at 4.2 K and Pauli paramagnetism have been demonstrated for the sulfurized CuCo$_{2}$S$_{4}$ by the measurements of electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

Temperature dependencies of magnetic susceptibility in a trigonal single crystal of erbium aluminum borate were measured in the temperature range of 2 - 15 K at the external field of 100 Oe applied along the second- and third-order crystallographic axes. Analysis of the experimental data allows to identify the Van Vleck contribution to the susceptibility. The influence of spin correlations on the magnetic susceptibility has been identified. We investigate the response of a doped topological insulator Bi$_2$Se$_3$ with spin-triplet nematic superconductivity to external magnetization. We calculate the Zeeman part of magnetic susceptibility for nematic and chiral superconducting phases near T$_c$ in Ginzburg-Landau formalism. Superconducting order parameter from $E_u$ representation has non-trivial coupling with the transversal Zeeman field that results in a paramagnetic response to a magnetization. The topology of a Fermi surface has a strong influence on magnetic susceptibility. Lifshitz transition from closed to open Fermi surface eventually leads to phase transition from the nematic to chiral phase. At the transition point, magnetic susceptibility diverges. Also, we study the effects of the electron-electron interaction on the competition between nematic and chiral phases. We found that in a real system, electron-electron interaction can drive nematic to chiral phase only in the vicinity of the phase transition. We compare our results with the existing experimental data.

We have investigated the structural, magnetic and dielectric properties of Pb-based langasite compound Pb$_3$TeMn$_3$P$_2$O$_{14}$ both experimentally and theoretically in the light of metal-oxygen covalency, and the consequent generation of multiferroicity. It is known that large covalency between Pb 6$p$ and O 2$p$ plays instrumental role behind stereochemical lone pair activity of Pb. The same happens here but a subtle structural phase transition above room temperature changes the degree of such lone pair activity and the system becomes ferroelectric below 310 K. Interestingly, this structural change also modulates the charge densities on different constituent atoms and consequently the overall magnetic response of the system while maintaining global paramagnetism behavior of the compound intact. This single origin of modulation in polarity and paramagnetism inherently connects both the functionalities and the system exhibits mutiferroicity at room temperature.

We experimentally demonstrated that the AYFFF self-assemblies adsorbed with various monovalent cations (Na+, K+, and Li+) show unexpectedly super strong paramagnetism. The magnetism of most biological systems has not been characterized, which directly impedes our understanding of many magnetic field-related phenomena, including magnetoreception and magnetic bio-effects. Here we measured the magnetic susceptibility of aromatic peptide AYFFF self-assemblies in the presence or absence of divalent metal cations in liquid phase at room temperature. Unexpectedly, the magnetic susceptibilities of AYFFF self-assemblies in the chloride solution of various divalent cations (Mg2+, Zn2+, and Cu2+) show super strong paramagnetism. We attribute the super strong paramagnetism to existence of the magnetic moments on the cations adsorbed on aromatic rings in the AYFFF assemblies through hydrated cation-{\pi} interactions, where the adsorbed cations display non-divalent behavior with unpaired electron spins. Our results indicate the super strong paramagnetism or potential ferromagnetism in the aromatic ring-enriched biomolecules when there are enough cations of divalent metals adsorbed. We found that the AYFFF self-assemblies in the chloride solution of some divalent cations ($Zn^{2+}, Mg^{2+},$ and $Cu^{2+}$) display super strong paramagnetism, which may approach the mass susceptibility of ferromagnetism. A spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on honeycomb lattice is investigated by doing triplon analysis and quantum Monte Carlo calculations. This model, inspired by Cu$_2$(pymca)$_3$(ClO$_4$), has three different antiferromagnetic exchange interactions ($J_A$, $J_B$, $J_C$) on three different sets of nearest-neighbour bonds which form a kagome superlattice. While the model is bipartite and unfrustrated, its quantum phase diagram is found to be dominated by a quantum paramagnetic phase that is best described as a spin-gapped hexagonal-singlet state. The N\'eel antiferromagnetic order survives only in a small region around $J_A=J_B=J_C$. The magnetization produced by external magnetic field is found to exhibit plateaus at 1/3 and 2/3 of the saturation value, or at 1/3 alone, or no plateaus. Notably, the plateaus exist only inside a bounded region within the hexagonal-singlet phase. This study provides a clear understanding of the spin-gapped behaviour and magnetization plateaus observed in Cu$_2$(pymca)$_3$(ClO$_4$), and also predicts the possible disappearance of 2/3 plateau under pressure., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures

Using inelastic x-ray scattering beyond the dipole limit and hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy we establish the dual nature of the U $5f$ electrons in UM$_2$Si$_2$ (M = Pd, Ni, Ru, Fe), regardless of their degree of delocalization. We have observed that the compounds have in common a local atomic-like state that is well described by the U $5f^2$ configuration with the $\Gamma_1^{(1)}$ and $\Gamma_2$ quasi-doublet symmetry. The amount of the U 5$f^3$ configuration, however, varies considerably across the UM$_2$Si$_2$ series, indicating an increase of U5$f$ itineracy in going from M=Pd to Ni to Ru, and to the Fe compound. The identified electronic states explain the formation of the very large ordered magnetic moments in UPd$_2$Si$_2$ and UNi$_2$Si$_2$, the availability of orbital degrees of freedom needed for the hidden order in URu$_2$Si$_2$ to occur, as well as the appearance of Pauli paramagnetism in UFe$_2$Si$_2$. A unified and systematic picture of the U$M_2$Si$_2$ compounds may now be drawn, thereby providing suggestions for new experiments to induce hidden order and/or superconductivity in U compounds with the tetragonal body-centered ThCr$_2$Si$_2$ structure.

We study the response of ideal spin systems which are interacting with both a strong oscillating magnetic field, and a thermal environment, to a weak probing magnetic field. We demonstrate that even the sign of the resulting mean magnetization depends on the amplitude of the driving field, and that its absolute value can be significantly larger than the equilibrium magnetization in the absence of time-periodic forcing. Since the underlying Floquet-state occupation probabilities are determined by the precise form of the system-bath coupling, future measurements of such effects have the potential to establish a particularly innovative line of research, providing information on nonequilibrium thermodynamics, and giving access to quantities which usually remain hidden when probing equilibrium systems., Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures

Conventional Paramagnetism - a state with finite magnetic moment per ion sans long range magnetic ordering, but with lowering temperature the moment on each ion picks up a particular direction, breaking rotational symmetry, and results into long range magnetic ordering. However, in systems with competing multiple degrees of freedom this conventional notion may easily breaks and results into short range correlation much above the global magnetic transition temperature. La2CuIrO6 with complex interplay of spins (s =1/2) on Cu site and pseudo-spin (j =1/2) on Ir site owing to strong spin-orbit coupling provides fertile ground to observe such correlated phenomena. By a comprehensive temperature dependent Raman study, we have shown the presence of such a correlated paramagnetic state in La2CuIrO6 much above the long range magnetic ordering temperature (TN ). Our observation of strong interactions of phonons, associated with Cu/Ir octahedra, with underlying magnetic degrees of freedom mirrored in the observed Fano asymmetry, which remarkably persists as high as ~ 3.5TN clearly signals the existence of correlated paramagnetism hence broken rotational symmetry. Our detailed analysis also reveals anomalous changes in the self-energy parameters of the phonon modes, i.e. mode frequencies and linewidth, below TN, providing a useful gauge for monitoring the strong coupling between phonons and magnetic degrees of freedom., Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures

The high Tc superconductor FeTe0.55Se0.45 has recently been shown to support a surface state with topological character. Here we use low-energy laser-based ARPES with variable light polarization, including both linear and circular polarization, to re-examine the same material and the related FeTe0.7Se0.3, with larger Te concentration. In both cases we observe the presence of a surface state displaying linear dispersion in a cone-like configuration. The use of circular polarization confirms the presence of helical spin structure. These experimental studies are compared with theoretical studies that account for the local magnetic effects related to the paramagnetism observed in this system in the normal state. In contrast to previous studies we find that including the magnetic contributions is necessary to bring the chemical potential of the calculated electronic band structure naturally into alignment with the experimental observations.

The effect of compression on the magnetic ground state of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ is studied with x-ray resonant techniques in the diamond anvil cell. The weak interlayer exchange coupling between square-planar 2D IrO$_2$ layers is readily modified upon compression, with a crossover between magnetic structures around 7 GPa mimicking the effect of an applied magnetic field at ambient pressure. Higher pressures drive an order-disorder magnetic phase transition with no magnetic order detected above 17-20 GPa. The persistence of strong exchange interactions between $\mathrm{J_{eff}}=1/2$ magnetic moments within the insulating IrO$_2$ layers up to at least 35 GPa points to a highly frustrated magnetic state in compressed Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ opening the door for realization of novel quantum paramagnetic phases driven by extended $5d$ orbitals with entangled spin and orbital degrees of freedom., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, see ancillary file for Supplemental Material

We investigate the spin $S=1/2$ Heisenberg model on the body centered cubic lattice in the presence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor $J_{1}$, second-neighbor $J_{2}$, and third-neighbor $J_{3}$ exchange interactions. The classical ground state phase diagram obtained by a Luttinger-Tisza analysis is shown to host six different (noncollinear) helimagnetic orders in addition to ferromagnetic, N\'eel, stripe and planar antiferromagnetic orders. Employing the pseudofermion functional renormalization group (PFFRG) method for quantum spins ($S=1/2$) we find an extended nonmagnetic region, and significant shifts to the classical phase boundaries and helimagnetic pitch vectors caused by quantum fluctuations while no new long-range dipolar magnetic orders are stabilized. The nonmagnetic phase is found to disappear for $S=1$. We calculate the magnetic ordering temperatures from PFFRG and quantum Monte Carlo methods, and make comparisons to available data, Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures, 6 tables
