Nonlinearity and discreteness are two pivotal factors for an emergence of discrete breather excitations in various media. We argue that these requirements are met in the forced ferromagnetic phase of the monoaxial chiral helimagnet CrNb$_3$S$_6$ due to specific domain structure of the compound. The stationary, time-periodic breather modes appear as the discrete breather lattice solutions whose period mismatches with a system size. Thanks to easy-plane single-ion anisotropy intrinsic to CrNb$_3$S$_6$, these modes are of the dark type with frequencies lying within the linear spin-wave band, close to its bottom edge. They represent cnoidal states of magnetization, similar to the well-known soliton lattice ground state, with differing but limited number of embedded $2\pi$-kinks. Linear stability of these dark breather modes is verified by means of the Floquet analysis. Their energy controlled by two parameters, namely the breather lattice period and amplitude, falls off linearly with a growth of the kink number. Features of the phonon spectrum of a chiral crystal are examined within the micropolar elasticity theory. This formalism accounts for not only translational micromotions of a medium but also rotational ones. It is found that there appears the phonon band splitting depending on the left/right-circular polarization in a purely phonon sector without invoking any outside subsystem. The phonon spectrum reveals parity breaking while preserving time-reversal symmetry, i.e. it possesses true chirality. We find that hybridization of the micro-rotational and translational modes gives rise to the acoustic phonon branch with a "roton" minimum reminiscent of the elementary excitations in the superfluid helium-4. We argue that a mechanism of this phenomena is in line with Nozi\`{e}res' reinterpretation [J. Low Temp. Phys. \textbf{137}, 45 (2004)] of the rotons as a manifistation of an incipient crystallization instability. We present the theory of nonlinear ac magnetic response for the highly nonlinear regime of the chiral soliton lattice. Increasing of the dc magnetic field perpendicularly to the chiral axis results in crossover inside the phase, when nearly isolated $2\pi$-kinks are partitioned by vast ferromagnetic domains. Assuming that each of the kink reacts independently from the other ones to the external ac field, we demonstrate that internal deformations of such a kink give rise to the nonlinear response., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

We consider the case of a chiral soliton lattice subjected to uniaxial elastic strain applied perpendicular to the chiral axis and derive through analytical modelling the phase diagram of magnetic states supported in the presence of an external magnetic field. The strain induced anisotropies give rise to three distinct non-trivial spin textures, depending on the nature of the strain, and we show how these states may be identified by their signatures in Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Experimental TEM measurements of the Fresnel contrast in a strained sample of the prototypical monoaxial chrial helimagnet CrNb$_3$S$_6$ are reported and compare well with the modelled contrast. We present a theory of standing spin wave (SSW) in a monoaxial chiral helimagnet. Motivated by experimental findings on the magnetic field-dependence of the resonance frequency in thin films of Cr${}$Nb$_{3} $S${}_{6}$[Goncalves et al., Phys. Rev. B95, 104415 (2017)], we examine the SSW over a chiral soliton lattice (CSL) excited by an ac magnetic field applied parallel and perpendicular to the chiral axis. For this purpose, we generalize Kittel-Pincus theories of the SSW in ferromagnetic thin films to the case of non-collinear helimagnet with the surface end spins which are softly pinned by an anisotropy field. Consequently, we found there appear two types of modes. One is a Pincus mode which is composed of a long-period Bloch wave and a short-period ripple originated from the periodic structure of the CSL. Another is a short-period Kittel ripple excited by space-periodic perturbation which exists only in the case where the ac field is applied perpendicular the chiral axis. We demonstrate that the existence of the Pincus mode and the Kittel ripple is consistent with experimentally found double resonance profile., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures

Molecules intercalating two-dimensional (2D) materials form complex structures that have been mostly characterized by spatially averaged techniques. Here we use aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and density-functional-theory (DFT) calculations to study the atomic structure of bilayer graphene (BLG) and few-layer graphene (FLG) intercalated with FeCl$_3$. In BLG we discover two distinct intercalated structures that we identify as monolayer-FeCl$_3$ and monolayer-FeCl$_2$. The two structures are separated by atomically sharp boundaries and induce large but different free-carrier densities in the graphene layers, $7.1\times10^{13}$ cm$^{-2}$ and $7.1\times10^{13}$ cm$^{-2}$ respectively. In FLG, we observe multiple FeCl$_3$ layers stacked in a variety of possible configurations with respect to one another. Finally, we find that the microscope's electron beam can convert the FeCl$_3$ monolayer into FeOCl monolayers in a rectangular lattice. These results reveal the need for a combination of atomically-resolved microscopy, spectroscopy, and DFT calculations to identify intercalated structures and study their properties.

Collective dynamics of topological magnetic textures can be thought of as a massive particle moving in a magnetic pinning potential. We demonstrate that inside a cavity resonator this effective mechanical system can feel the electromagnetic radiation pressure from cavity photons through the magneto-optical inverse Faraday and Cotton-Mouton effects. We estimate values for the effective parameters of the optomechanical coupling for two spin textures -- a Bloch domain wall and a chiral magnetic soliton lattice. The soliton lattice has magnetic chirality, so that in circularly polarized light it behaves like a chiral particle with the sign of the optomechanical coupling determined by the helicity of the light and chirality of the lattice. In the circular photogalvanic effect, circularly polarized light can produce a direct electron photocurrent in metals and the direction of the current depends on the polarization. We suggest that an analogous nonlinear effect exists for antiferromagnetic insulators wherein the total spin of light and spin waves is conserved. In consequence, a spin angular momentum is expected to be transfered from photons to magnons so that a circularly polarized electromagnetic field will generate a direct magnon spin current. The direction of the current is determined by the helicity of the light. We show that this resonant effect appears as a second order light-matter interaction. We study magnetoelastic resonance phenomena in a mono-axial chiral helimagnet belonging to hexagonal crystal class. By computing the spectrum of coupled elastic wave and spin wave, it is demonstrated how hybridization occurs depending on their chirality. Specific features of the magnetoelastic resonance are discussed for the conical phase and the soliton lattice phase stabilized in the mono-axial chiral helimagnet. The former phase exhibits appreciable non-reciprocity of the spectrum, the latter is characterized by a multi-resonance behavior. We propose that the non-reciprocal spin wave around the forced-ferromagnetic state has potential capability to convert the linearly polarized elastic wave to circularly polarized one with the chirality opposite to the spin wave chirality., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, Accepted in Phys. As first demonstrated by Tang and Cohen in chiral optics, the asymmetry in the rate of electromagnetic energy absorption between left and right enantiomers is determined by an optical chirality density [1]. Here, we demonstrate that this effect can exist in magnetic spin systems. By constructing a formal analogy with electrodynamics, we show that in antiferromagnets with broken chiral symmetry the asymmetry in local spin-wave energy absorption is proportional to a spin-wave chirality density, which is a direct counterpart of optical zilch. We propose that injection of a pure spin current into an antiferromagnet may serve as a chiral symmetry breaking mechanism, since its effect in the spin-wave approximation can be expressed in terms of additional Lifshitz invariants. A possibility of the topological Kosterlitz-Thouless~(KT) transition in the Pokrovsky-Talapov~(PT) model is investigated by using the functional renormalization-group (RG) approach by Wetterich. Our main finding is that the nonzero misfit parameter of the model, which can be related with the linear gradient term (Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction), makes such a transition impossible, what contradicts the previous consideration of this problem by non-perturbative RG methods. To support the conclusion the initial PT model is reformulated in terms of the 2D theory of relativistic fermions using an analogy between the 2D sine-Gordon and the massive Thirring models. In the new formalism the misfit parameter corresponds to an effective gauge field that enables to include it in the RG procedure on an equal footing with the other parameters of the theory. The Wetterich equation is applied to obtain flow equations for the parameters of the new fermionic action. We demonstrate that these equations reproduce the KT type of behavior if the misfit parameter is zero. However, any small nonzero value of the quantity rules out a possibility of the KT transition. To confirm the finding we develop a description of the problem in terms of the 2D Coulomb gas model. Within the approach the breakdown of the KT scenario gains a transparent meaning, the misfit gives rise to an effective in-plane electric field that prevents a formation of bound vortex-antivortex pairs., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

We discuss optical chirality in different types of gyrotropic media. Our analysis is based on the formalism of nongeometric symmetries of Maxwell's equations in vacuum generalized to material media with given constituent relations. This approach enables us to derive directly conservation laws related to the nongeometric symmetries. For isotropic chiral media, we demonstrate that likewise free electromagnetic field, both duality and helicity generators belong to the basis set of nongeometric symmetries that guarantees the conservation of optical chirality. In gyrotropic crystals, which exhibit natural optical activity, the situation is quite different from the case of isotropic media. For light propagating along certain crystallographic direction, there arise two distinct cases, i.~e., (1) the duality is broken but the helicity is preserved, or (2) only the duality symmetry survives. We show that the existence of one of these symmetries (duality or helicity) is enough to define optical chirality. A single nonholonomic under-actuated mobile robot with a bounded control range travels in a 3D workspace. This workspace also hosts a compact unknown domain with a smooth boundary. The robot has access to the horizontal distance to this domain and to a certain direction (typically, vertical) in the space, along with its coordinate (typically, altitude) in this direction. We present a new navigation law that drives the robot to the desired distance to the domain and ensures subsequent full scan of its surface within a desired range of "altitudes". The proposed strategy is computationally inexpensive and achieves full scan at the lowest control level via generating the current control as a simple, reflex-like reaction to the current observation. The paper presents and proves key technical facts underlying mathematically rigorous analysis and justification of the proposed guidance approach.

The zero temperature phase diagram of the mono-axial chiral helimagnet in the magnetic field plane formed by the components parallel and perpendicular to the helical axis is thoroughly analyzed. The nature of the transition to the commensurate state depends on the angle between the field and the helical axis. For field directions close to the directions parallel or perpendicular to the helical axis the transition is continuous, while for intermediate angles the transition is discontinuous and the incommensurate and commensurate states coexist on the transition line. The continuous and discontinuous transition lines are separated by two tricritical points with specific singular behaviour. The location of the continuous and discontinuous lines and of the tricritical points depend strongly on the easy-plane anisotropy, the effect of which is analyzed. For large anisotropy the conical approximation locates the transition line very accurately, although it does not predict the continuous transitions nor the tricitical behaviour. It is shown that for large anisotropy, as in CrNb3S6, the form of the transition line is universal, that is, independent of the sample, and obeys a simple equation. We consider a single non-holonomic Dubins-like robot traveling with a constant longitudinal speed in an a priori unknown and unsteady planar environment. The robot should detect, locate, and track the boundary of a dynamic environmental scalar field. The field is measured by an on-board sensor in a point-wise fashion at the robot's location. The focus is on unsteady boundaries that evolve over time in an arbitrary fashion, including deformations, i.e., changes of shapes and sizes. We present a sliding mode control method for localizing and tracking such boundaries: the robot is steered to the boundary and circulates in its close proximity afterwards. The proposed control algorithm does not require estimation of the spatial gradient of the field and is non-demanding with respect to both computation and motion. We demonstrated that the chiral soliton lattice formed out of a chiral helimagnet exhibits coherent sliding motion by applying a time-dependent magnetic field parallel to the helical axis, in addition to a static field perpendicular to the helical axis. To describe the coherent sliding, we use the collective coordinate method and numerical analysis. We also show that the time-dependent sliding velocity causes a time-varying Berry cap which causes the spin-motive-force. A magnetization process in two-dimensional ferrimagnet BIPNNBNO is analyzed. The compound consists of ferrimagnetic (1,1/2) chains coupled by two sorts of antiferromagnetic interactions. Whereas a behavior of the magnetization curve in higher magnetic fields can be understood within a process for the separate ferrimagnetic chain, an appearance of the singlet plateau at lower fields is an example of non-Lieb-Mattis type ferrimagnetism. By using the exact diagonalization technique for a finite clusters of sizes 4x8 and 4x10 we show that the interchain frustration coupling plays an essential role in stabilization of the singlet phase. These results are complemented by an analysis of four cylindrically coupled ferrimagnetic (1,1/2) chains via an abelian bosonization technique and an effective theory based on the XXZ spin-1/2 Heisenberg model when the interchain interactions are sufficiently weak/strong, respectively.

An analysis of the energy spectrum and the magnetization curve of two-dimensional organic antiferromagnet F2PNNNO with a spin-one dimerized structure shows that a behavior of the compound in an external magnetic field can be explained within a lattice boson model with an extended Pauli's exclusion principle, i.e. no more than two bosons per a dimer. The unusual magnetization curve observed experimentally in the compound reflects a sequence of phase transitions intrinsic for a lattice boson system with strong on-site and inter-site repulsions due to a tuning of magnon density by the applied magnetic field.

A consistent theory to describe the correlated dynamics of quantum mechanical itinerant spins and semiclassical local magnetization is given. We consider the itinerant spins as quantum mechanical operators, whereas local moments are considered within classical Lagrangian formalism. By appropriately treating fluctuation space spanned by basis functions, including a zero-mode wave function, we construct coupled equations of motion for the collective coordinate of the center-of-mass motion and the localized zero-mode coordinate perpendicular to the domain wall plane. By solving them, we demonstrate that the correlated dynamics is understood through a hierarchy of two time scales: Boltzmann relaxation time when a non-adiabatic part of the spin-transfer torque appears, and Gilbert damping time when adiabatic part comes up., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

Motivated by recent experimental results reporting giant coercive fields in Co(II)-based molecular magnets we present a theory of hysteresis phenomena based on the Glauber stochastic dynamics. Unusual form of hysteresis loops is similar to those of found in Co-based quasi-one-dimensional ferrimagnet CoPhOMe at low temperatures. Temperature dependence of the coercive field has a characteristic form with an inflection that may serve as an indicator of the Glauber dynamics in real compounds. It is suggested that marked features of symmetry breaking mechanism and elementary excitations in chiral helimagnet come up as visible effects in electron spin resonance (ESR) profile. Under the magnetic field applied parallel and perpendicular to the helical axis, elementary excitations are respectively described by the helimagnon associated with rotational symmetry breaking and the magnetic kink crystal phonon associated with translational symmetry breaking. We show the existence of an isolated soliton excitation over the topological ground state configuration in chiral helimagnet with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moryia exchange and the strong easy-plane anisotropy. The magnetic field perpendicular to the helical axis stabilizes the kink crystal state which plays a role of "topological protectorate" for the traveling soliton with a definite handedness. To find new soliton solution, we use the B\"{a}cklund transformation technique. Motivated by the spin current problem in chiral helimagnet, we rigorously elucidated the hidden Galilean invariance in the chiral XY model under the magnetic field. The Lie group analysis is applied to the differential equations of the continuum theory of the chiral helimagnet with the parity-violating Dzyaloshinskii-Morya coupling under a transversal magnetic field. Lie point symmetries and the invariant solutions under these symmetries are found. They present sliding solutions that come up as a consequence of breaking of both spin rotational symmetry by the external magnetic field and a parity violation due to the Dzyaloshinskii-Morya interaction. We found that variational symmetries are related with translations in space and time, the corresponding energy and momentum conservation laws are derived. We therefore succeeded in justifying the existence of the transport spin current in chiral helimagnet., Comment: 14 pages

We give detailed description of the transport spin current in the chiral helimagnet. Under the static magnetic field applied perpendicular to the helical axis, the magnetic kink crystal (chiral soliton lattice) is formed. Once the kink crystal begins to move under the Galilean boost, the spin-density accumulation occurs inside each kink and there emerges periodic arrays of the induced magnetic dipoles carrying the transport spin current. The coherent motion of the kink crystal dynamically generates the spontaneous demagnetization field. This mechanism is analogous to the D\"{o}ring-Becker-Kittel mechanism of the domain wall motion in ferromagnets. To describe the kink crystal motion, we took account of not only the tangential $\phi$-fluctuations but the longitudinal $\theta$-fluctuations around the helimagnetic configuration. Based on the collective coordinate method and the Dirac's canonical formulation for the singular Lagrangian system, we derived the closed formulae for the mass, spin current and induced magnetic dipole moment accompanied with the kink crystal motion. To materialize the theoretical model presented here, symmetry-adapted material synthesis would be required, where the interplay of crystallographic and magnetic chirality plays a key role there., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, to be published in Phys. We show that the bulk transport magnetic current is generated by the moving magnetic kink crystal (chiral soliton lattice) formed in the chiral helimagnet under the static magnetic field applied perpendicular to the helical axis. The current is caused by the non-equilibrium transport momentum with the kink mass being determined by the spin fluctuations around the kink crystal state. An emergence of the transport magnetic currents is then a consequence of the dynamical off-diagonal long range order along the helical axis. We present a quantum cluster solver for spin-$S$ Heisenberg model on a two-dimensional lattice. The formalism is based on the real-space renormalization procedure and uses the lattice point group-theoretical analysis and nonabelian SU(2) spin symmetry technique. The exact diagonalization procedure is used twice at each renormalization group step. The method is applied to the spin-half antiferromagnet on a square lattice and a calculation of local observables is demonstrated. Based on a quantum dissipation theory of open systems, we present a theoretical study of slow dynamics of magnetization for the ordered state of the new molecule-based magnetic complex [Mn(hfac)_{2}BNO_{H}] composed from antiferromagnetically coupled ferrimagnetic (5/2,1) spin chains. Experimental investigations of the magnetization process in pulsed fields have shown that this compound exhibits a metamagnetic AF-FI transition at a critical field in the order of the interchain coupling. A strong frequency dependence for the ac-susceptibility has been revealed in the vicinity of the AF-FI transition and was associated with an AF-FI interface kink motion. We model these processes by a field-driven domain-wall motion along the field-unfavorable chains correlated with a dissipation effect due to a magnetic system-bath coupling. The calculated longitudinal magnetization has a two-step relaxation after the field is switched off and are found in good agreement with the experiment. The relaxation time determined from the imaginary part of the model ac-susceptibility agrees qualitatively with that found from the remanent magnetization data.

We present a study of a new class of exact solutions having a form of spiral vortices for an isotropic two-dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnet using a continuum theory and direct numerical simulations of the spin system on a square lattice. We find their features issued from the conservation laws and describe their interaction. Reasons behind the formation of the proper spin configurations on a square lattice are investigated., Comment: accepted in Phys. Rev. B

The real-space RG approach is applied to study critical temperatures of system consisting of interacting spin chains of spin S=1 with an inner antiferromagnetic exchange which form a honeycomb crystal lattice. Using anisotropic Heisenberg model we calculate critical temperature as a function of anisotropic parameter and the ratio of interchain and intrachain interactions. A comparison our results with those obtained from RGRS calculations for the same model of spin-1/2 on a square lattice is given.

For two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet we present an analysis of topological coreless excitations having a stripe form. These textures are characterized by singularities at boundaries. A detailed classification of the stripe textures results in a certain analogy with the coreless excitations in $^3He-A$ phase: Mermin-Ho and Anderson-Toulouse coreless vortices. The excitations of the last type may have a low bulk energy. The stripe textures may be observed as an occurrence of short-range incommensurate order in the antiferromagnetic environment.

We suppose that the doping of the 2D hard-core boson system away from half-filling may result in the formation of multi-center topological defect such as charge order (CO) bubble domain(s) with Bose superfluid (BS) and extra bosons both localized in domain wall(s), or a {\it topological} CO+BS {\it phase separation}, rather than an uniform mixed CO+BS supersolid phase. Starting from the classical model we predict the properties of the respective quantum system. The long-wavelength behavior of the system is believed to remind that of granular superconductors, CDW materials, Wigner crystals, and multi-skyrmion system akin in a quantum Hall ferromagnetic state of a 2D electron gas., Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure

The nonlinear partial differential equations describing the spin dynamics of Heisenberg ferro and antiferromagnet are studied by Lie transformation group method. The generators of the admitted variational Lie symmetry groups are derived and conservation laws for the conserved currents are found via Noether's theorem.

We suggest a method of derivation of the long-wave action of the model spin Hamiltonians using the non-linear partial differential equations of motions of the individual spins. According to the Vainberg's theorem the set of these equations are (formal) potential if the symmetry analysis for the Frechet derivatives of the system is true. The case of Heisenberg (anti)ferromagnets is considered. It is shown the functional whose stationary points are described by the equations coincides with the long-wave action and includes the non-trivial topological term (Berry phase).

A new class of nodal topological excitations in a two-dimensional Heisenberg model is studied. The solutions correspond to a nodal singular point of the gradient field of the azimuthal angle. An analytical solution found for the isotropic case. An effect of in-plane exchange anisotropy is studied numerically.
