Abstract

Acceleration of positive muons from thermal energy to $100~$keV has been demonstrated. Thermal muons were generated by resonant multi-photon ionization of muonium atoms emitted from a sheet of laser-ablated aerogel. The thermal muons were first electrostatically accelerated to $5.7~$keV, followed by further acceleration to 100 keV using a radio-frequency quadrupole. The transverse normalized emittance of the accelerated muons in the horizontal and vertical planes were $0.85 \pm 0.25 ~\rm{(stat.)}~^{+0.22}_{-0.13} ~\rm{(syst.)}~\pi~$mm$\cdot$mrad and $0.32\pm 0.03~\rm{(stat.)} ^{+0.05}_{-0.02} ~\rm{(syst.)}~\pi~$mm$\cdot$mrad, respectively. The measured emittance values demonstrated phase space reduction by a factor of $2.0\times 10^2$ (horizontal) and $4.1\times 10^2$ (vertical) allowing good acceleration efficiency. These results pave the way to realize the first-ever muon accelerator for a variety of applications in particle physics, material science, and other fields.

Abstract

Muon acceleration using a radio-frequency accelerator was recently demonstrated for the first time. Measurement of the muon anomalous magnetic moment and electric dipole moment at Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex is the first experiment using accelerated muon beams, and construction will begin soon. The radio-frequency accelerator used in the experiment and the first muon acceleration are described in this paper.

Abstract

The emission of muonium ($\mu^+e^-$) atoms into vacuum from silica aerogel with laser ablation on its surface was studied with various ablation structures at room temperature using the subsurface muon beams at TRIUMF and Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). Laser ablation was applied to produce holes or grooves with typical dimensions of a few hundred $\mu$m to a few mm, except for some extreme conditions. The measured emission rate tends to be higher for larger fractions of ablation opening and for shallower depths. More than a few ablation structures reach the emission rates similar to the highest achieved in the past measurements. The emission rate is found to be stable at least for a couple of days. Measurements of spin precession amplitudes for the produced muonium atoms and remaining muons in a magnetic field determine a muonium formation fraction of $(65.5 \pm 1.8)$%. The precession of the polarized muonium atoms is also observed clearly in vacuum. A projection of the emission rates measured at TRIUMF to the corresponding rates at J-PARC is demonstrated taking the different beam condition into account reasonably., Comment: 34 pages, 13 figures, submitted to PTEP

Abstract

A buncher cavity has been developed for the muons accelerated by a radio-frequency quadrupole linac (RFQ). The buncher cavity is designed for $\beta=v/c=0.04$ at an operational frequency of 324 MHz. It employs a double-gap structure operated in the TEM mode for the required effective voltage with compact dimensions, in order to account for the limited space of the experiment. The measured resonant frequency and unloaded quality factor are 323.95 MHz and $3.06\times10^3$, respectively. The buncher cavity was successfully operated for longitudinal bunch size measurement of the muons accelerated by the RFQ.

Abstract

This paper introduces a new approach to measure the muon magnetic moment anomaly $a_{\mu} = (g-2)/2$, and the muon electric dipole moment (EDM) $d_{\mu}$ at the J-PARC muon facility. The goal of our experiment is to measure $a_{\mu}$ and $d_{\mu}$ using an independent method with a factor of 10 lower muon momentum, and a factor of 20 smaller diameter storage-ring solenoid compared with previous and ongoing muon $g-2$ experiments with unprecedented quality of the storage magnetic field. Additional significant differences from the present experimental method include a factor of 1,000 smaller transverse emittance of the muon beam (reaccelerated thermal muon beam), its efficient vertical injection into the solenoid, and tracking each decay positron from muon decay to obtain its momentum vector. The precision goal for $a_{\mu}$ is statistical uncertainty of 450 part per billion (ppb), similar to the present experimental uncertainty, and a systematic uncertainty less than 70 ppb. Abstract

Muons have been accelerated by using a radio frequency accelerator for the first time. Negative muonium atoms (Mu$^-$), which are bound states of positive muons ($\mu^+$) and two electrons, are generated from $\mu^+$'s through the electron capture process in an aluminum degrader. The generated Mu$^-$'s are initially electrostatically accelerated and injected into a radio frequency quadrupole linac (RFQ). In the RFQ, the Mu$^-$'s are accelerated to 89 keV. The accelerated Mu$^-$'s are identified by momentum measurement and time of flight. This compact muon linac opens the door to various muon accelerator applications including particle physics measurements and the construction of a transmission muon microscope.

Abstract

Importin α4, which is encoded by the Kpna4 gene, is a well-characterized nuclear-cytoplasmic transport factor known to mediate transport of transcription factors including NF-κB. Here, we report that Kpna4 knock-out (KO) mice exhibit psychiatric disorder-related behavioral abnormalities such as anxiety-related behaviors, decreased social interaction, and sensorimotor gating deficits. Contrary to a previous study predicting attenuated NF-κB activity as a result of Kpna4 deficiency, we observed a significant increase in expression levels of NF-κB genes and proinflammatory cytokines such as TNFα, Il-1β or Il-6 in the prefrontal cortex or basolateral amygdala of the KO mice. Moreover, examination of inflammatory responses in primary cells revealed that Kpna4 deficient cells have an increased inflammatory response, which was rescued by addition of not only full length, but also a nuclear transport-deficient truncation mutant of importin α4, suggesting contribution of its non-transport functions. Furthermore, RNAseq of sorted adult microglia and astrocytes and subsequent transcription factor analysis suggested increases in polycomb repressor complex 2 (PRC2) activity in Kpna4 KO cells. Taken together, importin α4 deficiency induces psychiatric disorder-related behavioral deficits in mice, along with an increased inflammatory response and possible alteration of PRC2 activity in glial cells., (© 2024. 10. Position-dependent roles of somatic cells in phototaxis of Volvox .

Abstract

A spherical green alga, Volvox , achieves phototaxis via a simple on/off switch of flagellar beating in response to changes in light intensity, without the need for complex signal transduction between cells. Moreover, the alga can change its susceptibility to light in order to adapt to its environment. To identify the mechanisms of susceptibility regulation, experiments were conducted at three different levels: population, individual, and cellular. The light intensity dependence of the average velocity at the population level and that of the change in flow speed obtained at the individual level were consistent, indicating that susceptibility regulation occurred in each Volvox colony. Furthermore, by measuring the probability of stopping flagellar beating when the light intensity was changed, susceptibility regulation was found to result from the properties of somatic cells as differential and adaptive photosensors. These photosensing properties deteriorated from the anterior to the posterior regions of the colony. Considering the mechanical motion of a Volvox colony, the position-dependent ability of somatic cells indicates that the anterior cells play the role of a rudder, whereas the posterior cells play the role of a rower. Abstract

Seed dormancy corresponds to a reversible blockage of germination. Primary dormancy is established during seed maturation, while secondary dormancy is set up on the dispersed seed, following an exposure to unfavorable factors. Both dormancies are relieved in response to environmental factors, such as light, nitrate, and coldness. Quantitive Trait Locus (QTL) analyses for preharvest sprouting identified MKK3 kinase in cereals as a player in dormancy control. Here, we showed that MKK3 also plays a role in secondary dormancy in Arabidopsis within a signaling module composed of MAP3K13/14/19/20, MKK3, and clade-C MAPKs. Seeds impaired in this module acquired heat-induced secondary dormancy more rapidly than wild-type (WT) seeds, and this dormancy is less sensitive to nitrate, a signal able to release dormancy. We also demonstrated that MPK7 was strongly activated in the seed during dormancy release, especially in response to light and nitrate. This activation was greatly reduced in map3 k13/14/19/20 and mkk3 mutants. Finally, we showed that the module was not regulated and apparently did not regulate the genes controlling abscisic acid/gibberellin acid hormone balance, one of the crucial mechanisms of seed dormancy control. 12. Association Between Febuxostat Use and the Incidence of Cardiovascular Events, Mortality, and Kidney Events in Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease Compared to Allopurinol: A Study Using a Japanese Nationwide Database.

Abstract

Background Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) were excluded in most trials that investigated the effects of urate-lowering agents, such as febuxostat and allopurinol, in hyperuricemic patients. This exclusion leads to uncertainty regarding the efficacy of febuxostat in patients with CKD. Due to the high prevalence of hyperuricemia in patients with CKD, we aimed to assess the effect of febuxostat on improving patient outcomes concerning cardiovascular events and survival compared with those treated with allopurinol among patients with CKD. Methods We conducted a retrospective cohort study using Japanese nationwide administrative data from Jan 1, 2013, to Sep 30, 2020. Patients aged over 60 years diagnosed with CKD were included in this study if they were prescribed either febuxostat or allopurinol. The primary outcome was the occurrence of cardiovascular events including myocardial infarction, stroke, unstable angina requiring urgent revascularization, and all-cause deaths. We estimated hazard ratios (HR) and 95% CI using a Cox proportional hazard regression model adjusted for comorbidities, medications, and laboratory data. We also assessed defined starting kidney replacement therapy as a secondary endpoint treating death as a competing risk using the Fine & Gray regression model. Results A total of 21,015 patients included those with febuxostat (n=17,796) and those with allopurinol (n=3,219). The association between the type of drug and the occurrence of cardiovascular events did not show a significant difference (0.107 vs. 0.116 events per patient-year; adjusted HR 0.953, 95% CI: 0.854 to 1.062, P=0.381). Similar results were seen for all-cause deaths (0.060 vs. 0.068 events per patient-year; adjusted HR 0.877, 95% CI: 0.760 to 1.012, P=0.073). Regarding the secondary endpoint, the association between the type of drug and the timing of starting kidney replacement therapy did not show a significant difference (0.118 vs. 0.097 events per patient-year; adjusted HR 0.953, 95% CI: 0.854 to 1.062, P=0.425). 13. Clinical and histological impact of diffuse inflammation at pouchoscopy.

Abstract

Purpose: The anatomical location of inflammation in and around the ileal pouch affects the pouch survival rate, and diffuse inflammation has poor pouch survival rates. We aimed to clarify the symptoms and histological findings of diffuse inflammation of the pouch., Methods: We evaluated the symptoms, treatment, and histological findings according to the endoscopic phenotypes of diffuse inflammation, focal inflammation, and normal as the pouch body phenotype and afferent limb involvement, inlet involvement, cuffitis, and fistula as the peripheral findings., Results: Of the 318 pouchoscopies, 47 had diffuse inflammation, 201 had focal inflammation, and 70 were normal. Symptomatic patients had diffuse inflammation more frequently (46.8%) than focal inflammation (13.4%) and normal (14.2%), with no difference between focal inflammation and normal. Antibiotics and steroids were higher rate administered in cases of diffuse inflammation, but not in cases of focal inflammation or in normal cases. Histological inflammation, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)-specific finding, and colonic metaplasia showed severity in the order of diffuse inflammation > focal inflammation > normal. The number of peripheral inflammatory findings overlapped in the following order: diffuse inflammation > focal inflammation > normal. The number of symptomatic patients increased as the number of peripheral inflammatory findings increased., Conclusion: Pouches with diffuse inflammation are more symptomatic, have a higher use of therapeutic agents, and have more severe histological inflammation, IBD-specific finding, and colonic metaplasia accompanying peripheral inflammatory findings than the other groups. Abstract

Numerous health concerns, primarily kidney injury, have been reported with the use of Beni-kōji CholesteHelp, a functional food containing red yeast rice. Here, we describe 2 cases of kidney injury caused by beni-kōji. The first case had normal kidney function before consuming the product. After several months of use, she developed hypertension. After 6 months of supplement consumption, her estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) dropped to 22.5 mL/min/1.73 m 2 . A spot urine sample showed a urinary protein-to-creatinine ratio of 2.03 g/g, leading to the diagnosis of Fanconi syndrome. Kidney biopsy showed tubular degeneration. Thirty-five days after discontinuing the supplement, proteinuria resolved and the eGFR returned to baseline level. The second case, who had diabetes and normal kidney function, experienced severe kidney injury (eGFR, 3.5 mL/min/1.73 m 2 ) after 4 months of Beni-kōji CholesteHelp use. He required hemodialysis for >2 weeks but recovered kidney function after the product was discontinued. Kidney biopsy showed tubular injury similar to the first case and glomeruli changes consistent with diabetic nephropathy. These cases indicate that beni-kōji use is associated with tubular toxicity. 15. Unleashing the Power of Contrastive Learning for Zero-Shot Video Summarization.

Abstract

Video summarization aims to select the most informative subset of frames in a video to facilitate efficient video browsing. Past efforts have invariantly involved training summarization models with annotated summaries or heuristic objectives. In this work, we reveal that features pre-trained on image-level tasks contain rich semantic information that can be readily leveraged to quantify frame-level importance for zero-shot video summarization. Leveraging pre-trained features and contrastive learning, we propose three metrics featuring a desirable keyframe: local dissimilarity, global consistency, and uniqueness. We show that the metrics can well-capture the diversity and representativeness of frames commonly used for the unsupervised generation of video summaries, demonstrating competitive or better performance compared to past methods when no training is needed. We further propose a contrastive learning-based pre-training strategy on unlabeled videos to enhance the quality of the proposed metrics and, thus, improve the evaluated performance on the public benchmarks TVSum and SumMe.

16. Highly sensitive strigolactone perception by a divergent clade KAI2 receptor in a facultative root parasitic plant, Phtheirospermum japonicum.

Abstract

Phtheirospermum japonicum, a member of the Orobanchaceae family, is a facultative root parasitic plant that can survive without parasitizing the host. In contrast, obligate root parasitic plants such as Striga and Orobanche, which are also members of the Orobanchaceae family, cannot survive in the absence of the host. The germination of obligate root parasitic plants is typically induced by host root-derived strigolactones (SLs) at very low concentrations. The KAI2/HTL family proteins have been found to be involved in the perception of karrikin (KAR), a smoke-derived germination inducer and unidentified endogenous ligand, in non-parasitic plants. Obligate root parasitic plants possess uniquely diverged KAI2 clade genes, which are collectively referred to as KAI2d. Many of those have been shown to function as SL receptors. Intriguingly, the KAI2d clade genes are also conserved in P. japonicum, even though this plant does not require SLs for germination. The biochemical and physiological functions of the KAI2d proteins in P. japonicum remain unclear. Here, we report that some of these proteins can function as SL receptors in P. japonicum. Moreover, we found that one of them, PjKAI2d4, is highly sensitive to SLs when expressed in Arabidopsis, and it is similar to the sensitive SL receptors found in Striga and Orobanche. Abstract

Plant parasitic root-knot nematodes are major agricultural pests worldwide, as they infect plant roots and cause substantial damages to crop plants. Root-knot nematodes induce specialized feeding cells known as giant cells (GCs) in the root vasculature, which serve as nutrient reservoirs for the infecting nematodes. Here, we show that the cell walls of GCs thicken to form pitted patterns that superficially resemble metaxylem cells. Interestingly, VASCULAR-RELATED NAC-DOMAIN1 (VND1) was found to be upregulated, while the xylem-type programmed cell death marker XYLEM CYSTEINE PEPTIDASE 1 was downregulated upon nematode infection. The vnd2 and vnd3 mutants showed reduced secondary cell wall pore size, while the vnd1 vnd2 vnd3 triple mutant produced significantly fewer nematode egg masses when compared with the wild type. These results suggest that the GC development pathway likely shares common signaling modules with the metaxylem differentiation pathway and VND1, VND2, and VND3 redundantly regulate plant-nematode interaction through secondary cell wall formation., (© The Author(s) 2024. Abstract

A search for double-beta decays of 136Xe to excited states of 136Ba has been performed with the first phase data set of the KamLAND-Zen experiment. The 0+1, 2+1 and 2+2 transitions of 0{\nu}\{beta}\{beta} decay were evaluated in an exposure of 89.5kg-yr of 136Xe, while the same transitions of 2{\nu}\{beta}\{beta} decay were evaluated in an exposure of 61.8kg-yr. They are T (0{\nu}, 0+ \rightarrow 0+) > 2.4\times10^25 yr and T(2{\nu}, 0+ \rightarrow 0+) > 8.3\times10^23 yr (90% C.L.). The transitions to the 2+2 states are also evaluated for the first time to be T(0{\nu}, 0+ \rightarrow 2+) > 2.6\times10^25 yr and T(2{\nu}, 0+ \rightarrow 2+) > 9.0\times10^23 yr (90% C.L.). Abstract

Emission of muonium ($\mu^+e^-$) atoms from a laser-processed aerogel surface into vacuum was studied for the first time. Laser ablation was used to create hole-like regions with diameter of about 270$~\mu$m in a triangular pattern with hole separation in the range of 300--500$~\mu$m. The emission probability for the laser-processed aerogel sample is at least eight times higher than for a uniform one.

Abstract

We report a measurement of the $\nu_\mu$ inclusive charged current cross sections on iron and hydrocarbon in the T2K on-axis neutrino beam. The measured inclusive charged current cross sections on iron and hydrocarbon averaged over the T2K on-axis flux with a mean neutrino energy of 1.51 GeV are $(1.444\pm0.002(stat.)_{-0.157}^{+0.189}(syst.))\times 10^{-38}\mathrm{cm}^2/\mathrm{nucleon}$, and $(1.379\pm0.009(stat.)_{-0.147}^{+0.178}(syst.))\times 10^{-38}\mathrm{cm}^2/\mathrm{nucleon}$, respectively, and their cross section ratio is $1.047\pm0.007(stat.)\pm0.035(syst.)$. These results agree well with the predictions of the neutrino interaction model, and thus we checked the correct treatment of the nuclear effect for iron and hydrocarbon targets in the model within the measurement precisions., Comment: 15 pages, 17 figures

Abstract

We report a measurement of the neutrino-electron elastic scattering rate of 862 keV 7Be solar neutrinos based on a 165.4 kton-day exposure of KamLAND. The observed rate is 582 +/- 90 (kton-day)^-1, which corresponds to a 862 keV 7Be solar neutrino flux of (3.26 +/- 0.50) x 10^9 cm^-2s^-1, assuming a pure electron flavor flux. Comparing this flux with the standard solar model prediction and further assuming three flavor mixing, a nu_e survival probability of 0.66 +/- 0.14 is determined from the KamLAND data. Utilizing a global three flavor oscillation analysis, we obtain a total 7Be solar neutrino flux of (5.82 +/- 0.98) x 10^9 cm^-2s^-1, which is consistent with the standard solar model predictions., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys. Abstract

The reactor neutrino and gallium anomalies can be tested with a 3-4 PBq (75-100 kCi scale) 144Ce-144Pr antineutrino beta-source deployed at the center or next to a large low-background liquid scintillator detector. The antineutrino generator will be produced by the Russian reprocessing plant PA Mayak as early as 2014, transported to Japan, and deployed in the Kamioka Liquid Scintillator Anti-Neutrino Detector (KamLAND) as early as 2015. KamLAND's 13 m diameter target volume provides a suitable environment to measure the energy and position dependence of the detected neutrino flux. A characteristic oscillation pattern would be visible for a baseline of about 10 m or less, providing a very clean signal of neutrino disappearance into a yet-unknown, sterile neutrino state. This will provide a comprehensive test of the electron dissaperance neutrino anomalies and could lead to the discovery of a 4th neutrino state for Delta_m^2 > 0.1 eV^2 and sin^2(2theta) > 0.05., Comment: 67 pages, 50 figures. The observed rate is 582±94(kt d)-1, which corresponds to an 862-keV Be7 solar neutrino flux of (3.26±0.52)×109cm-2s-1, assuming a pure electron-flavor flux. Comparing this flux with the standard solar model prediction and further assuming three-flavor mixing, a νe survival probability of 0.66±0.15 is determined from the KamLAND data. Utilizing a global three-flavor oscillation analysis, we obtain a total Be7 solar neutrino flux of (5.82±1.02)×109cm-2s-1, which is consistent with the standard solar model predictions.

Abstract

We propose to test for short baseline neutrino oscillations, implied by the recent reevaluation of the reactor antineutrino flux and by anomalous results from the gallium solar neutrino detectors. The test will consist of producing a 75 kCi 144Ce - 144Pr antineutrino source to be deployed in the Kamioka Liquid Scintillator Anti-Neutrino Detector (KamLAND). KamLAND's 13m diameter target volume provides a suitable environment to measure energy and position dependence of the detected neutrino flux. A characteristic oscillation pattern would be visible for a baseline of about 10 m or less, providing a very clean signal of neutrino disappearance into a yet-unknown, "sterile" state. Such a measurement will be free of any reactor-related uncertainties. Abstract

The T2K collaboration reports a precision measurement of muon neutrino disappearance with an off-axis neutrino beam with a peak energy of 0.6 GeV. Near detector measurements are used to constrain the neutrino flux and cross section parameters. The Super-Kamiokande far detector, which is 295 km downstream of the neutrino production target, collected data corresponding to $3.01 \times 10^{20}$ protons on target. In the absence of neutrino oscillations, $205 \pm 17$ (syst.) events are expected to be detected and only 58 muon neutrino event candidates are observed. A fit to the neutrino rate and energy spectrum assuming three neutrino flavors, normal mass hierarchy and $\theta_{23}\leq \pi/4$ yields a best-fit mixing angle $\sin^2(2\theta_{23})=1.000$ and mass splitting $|\Delta m^2_{32}| =2.44 \times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2$/c$^4$. If $\theta_{23}\geq \pi/4$ is assumed, the best-fit mixing angle changes to $\sin^2(2\theta_{23})=0.999$ and the mass splitting remains unchanged., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, revised version accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters

Abstract

Procedures and results on hardware level detector calibration in Super-Kamiokande (SK) are presented in this paper. In particular, we report improvements made in our calibration methods for the experimental phase IV in which new readout electronics have been operating since 2008. The topics are separated into two parts. The first part describes the determination of constants needed to interpret the digitized output of our electronics so that we can obtain physical numbers such as photon counts and their arrival times for each photomultiplier tube (PMT). In this context, we developed an in-situ procedure to determine high-voltage settings for PMTs in large detectors like SK, as well as a new method for measuring PMT quantum efficiency and gain in such a detector. The second part describes the modeling of the detector in our Monte Carlo simulation, including in particular the optical properties of its water target and their variability over time. Detailed studies on the water quality are also presented. As a result of this work, we achieved a precision sufficient for physics analysis over a wide energy range (from a few MeV to above a TeV). For example, the charge determination was understood at the 1% level, and the timing resolution was 2.1 nsec at the one-photoelectron charge level and 0.5 nsec at the 100-photoelectron charge level., Comment: 75 pages, 35 figures

Abstract

The T2K collaboration: reports evidence for electron neutrino appearance at the atmospheric mass splitting, |\Delta m_{32}^2|=2.4x10^{-3} eV^2. An excess of electron neutrino interactions over background is observed from a muon neutrino beam with a peak energy of 0.6 GeV at the Super-Kamiokande (SK) detector 295 km from the beam's origin. Signal and background predictions are constrained by data from near detectors located 280 m from the neutrino production target. We observe 11 electron neutrino candidate events at the SK detector when a background of 3.3\pm0.4(syst.) events is expected. The background-only hypothesis is rejected with a p-value of 0.0009 (3.1\sigma), and a fit assuming \nu_{\mu}->\nu_e oscillations with sin^2(2\theta_{23})=1, \delta_{CP}=0 and |\Delta m_{32}^2|=2.4x10^{-3} eV^2 yields sin^2(2\theta_{13})=0.088^{+0.049}_{-0.039}(stat.+syst.)., Comment: 43 pages, 41 figures

Abstract

T2K has performed the first measurement of \nu{\mu} inclusive charged current interactions on carbon at neutrino energies of ~1 GeV where the measurement is reported as a flux-averaged double differential cross section in muon momentum and angle. The flux is predicted by the beam Monte Carlo and external data, including the results from the NA61/SHINE experiment. The data used for this measurement were taken in 2010 and 2011, with a total of 10.8 x 10^{19} protons-on-target. The analysis is performed on 4485 inclusive charged current interaction candidates selected in the most upstream fine-grained scintillator detector of the near detector. The flux-averaged total cross section is <\sigma_CC>_\phi =(6.91 +/- 0.13 (stat) +/- 0.84 (syst)) x10^{-39} cm^2/nucleon for a mean neutrino energy of 0.85 GeV.

Abstract

The Tokai-to-Kamioka (T2K) experiment studies neutrino oscillations using an off-axis muon neutrino beam with a peak energy of about 0.6 GeV that originates at the J-PARC accelerator facility. Interactions of the neutrinos are observed at near detectors placed at 280 m from the production target and at the far detector -- Super-Kamiokande (SK) -- located 295 km away. The flux prediction is an essential part of the successful prediction of neutrino interaction rates at the T2K detectors and is an important input to T2K neutrino oscillation and cross section measurements. A FLUKA and GEANT3 based simulation models the physical processes involved in the neutrino production, from the interaction of primary beam protons in the T2K target, to the decay of hadrons and muons that produce neutrinos. The simulation uses proton beam monitor measurements as inputs. The modeling of hadronic interactions is re-weighted using thin target hadron production data, including recent charged pion and kaon measurements from the NA61/SHINE experiment. For the first T2K analyses the uncertainties on the flux prediction are evaluated to be below 15% near the flux peak. The uncertainty on the ratio of the flux predictions at the far and near detectors is less than 2% near the flux peak., Comment: 36 pages

Abstract

The MiniBooNE and SciBooNE collaborations report the results of a joint search for short baseline disappearance of \bar{{\nu}_{\mu}} at Fermilab's Booster Neutrino Beamline. The MiniBooNE Cherenkov detector and the SciBooNE tracking detector observe antineutrinos from the same beam, therefore the combined analysis of their datasets serves to partially constrain some of the flux and cross section uncertainties. Uncertainties in the {\nu}_{\mu} background were constrained by neutrino flux and cross section measurements performed in both detectors. A likelihood ratio method was used to set a 90% confidence level upper limit on \bar{{\nu}_{\mu}} disappearance that dramatically improves upon prior limits in the {\Delta}m^2=0.1-100 eV^2 region., Comment: 15 pages, 27 figures

Abstract

We report a measurement of muon-neutrino disappearance in the T2K experiment. The 295-km muon-neutrino beam from Tokai to Kamioka is the first implementation of the off-axis technique in a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. With data corresponding to 1.43 10**20 protons on target, we observe 31 fully-contained single muon-like ring events in Super-Kamiokande, compared with an expectation of 104 +- 14 (syst) events without neutrino oscillations. The best-fit point for two-flavor nu_mu -> nu_tau oscillations is sin**2(2 theta_23) = 0.98 and |\Delta m**2_32| = 2.65 10**-3 eV**2. The boundary of the 90 % confidence region includes the points (sin**2(2 theta_23),|\Delta m**2_32|) = (1.0, 3.1 10**-3 eV**2), (0.84, 2.65 10**-3 eV**2) and (1.0, 2.2 10**-3 eV**2)., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

Precise measurement of neutrino beam direction and intensity was achieved based on a new concept with modularized neutrino detectors. INGRID (Interactive Neutrino GRID) is an on-axis near detector for the T2K long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. INGRID consists of 16 identical modules arranged in horizontal and vertical arrays around the beam center. The module has a sandwich structure of iron target plates and scintillator trackers. INGRID directly monitors the muon neutrino beam profile center and intensity using the number of observed neutrino events in each module. The neutrino beam direction is measured with accuracy better than 0.4 mrad from the measured profile center. Abstract

The SciBooNE and MiniBooNE collaborations report the results of a \nu_\mu disappearance search in the \Delta m^2 region of 0.5-40 eV^2. The neutrino rate as measured by the SciBooNE tracking detectors is used to constrain the rate at the MiniBooNE Cherenkov detector in the first joint analysis of data from both collaborations. Two separate analyses of the combined data samples set 90% confidence level (CL) limits on \nu_\mu disappearance in the 0.5-40 eV^2 \Delta m^2 region, with an improvement over previous experimental constraints between 10 and 30 eV^2., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures. Abstract

The T2K experiment observes indications of $\nu_\mu\rightarrow \nu_e$ appearance in data accumulated with $1.43\times10^{20}$ protons on target. Six events pass all selection criteria at the far detector. In a three-flavor neutrino oscillation scenario with $|\Delta m_{23}^2|=2.4\times10^{-3}$ eV$^2$, $\sin^2 2\theta_{23}=1$ and $\sin^2 2\theta_{13}=0$, the expected number of such events is 1.5$\pm$0.3(syst.). Under this hypothesis, the probability to observe six or more candidate events is 7$\times10^{-3}$, equivalent to 2.5$\sigma$ significance. Abstract

The T2K experiment is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. Its main goal is to measure the last unknown lepton sector mixing angle {\theta}_{13} by observing {\nu}_e appearance in a {\nu}_{\mu} beam. It also aims to make a precision measurement of the known oscillation parameters, {\Delta}m^{2}_{23} and sin^{2} 2{\theta}_{23}, via {\nu}_{\mu} disappearance studies. Other goals of the experiment include various neutrino cross section measurements and sterile neutrino searches. The experiment uses an intense proton beam generated by the J-PARC accelerator in Tokai, Japan, and is composed of a neutrino beamline, a near detector complex (ND280), and a far detector (Super-Kamiokande) located 295 km away from J-PARC. Abstract

The SciBooNE Collaboration reports K+ production cross section and rate measurements using high energy daughter muon neutrino scattering data off the SciBar polystyrene (C8H8) target in the SciBooNE detector. The K+ mesons are produced by 8 GeV protons striking a beryllium target in Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam line (BNB). Using observed neutrino and antineutrino events in SciBooNE, we measure d2{\sigma}/dpd{\Omega} = (5.34 \times 0.76) mb/(GeV/c \times sr) for p + Be -> K+ + X at mean K+ energy of 3.9 GeV and angle (with respect to the proton beam direction) of 3.7 degrees, corresponding to the selected K+ sample. Compared to Monte Carlo predictions using previous higher energy K+ production measurements, this measurement, which uses the NUANCE neutrino interaction generator, is consistent with a normalization factor of 0.85\times0.12. This agreement is evidence that the extrapolation of the higher energy K+ measurements to an 8 GeV beam energy using Feynman scaling is valid. Abstract

Background: Cystinosis is a lysosomal storage disorder characterized by an autosomal recessive phenotype. Intermediate cystinosis, which progresses slowly and causes renal failure, accounts for approximately 5% of all cystinosis cases. Patients with intermediate cystinosis may not exhibit the typical symptoms of cystinosis, such as Fanconi syndrome and ocular symptoms. Because of its diverse clinical presentation and rarity, intermediate cystinosis can be difficult to diagnose. Additionally, few patients can tolerate cystine-depleting drugs, such as cysteamine, because of their complicated administration schedules and side effects. We report a case of intermediate cystinosis that was treated with cysteamine for 10 years., Case Presentation: Urinary abnormalities were first diagnosed when the patient was 3 years of age during a health examination specifically for 3-year-old children, which is unique to Japan. Cystinosis was diagnosed when the patient was 12 years of age. Cysteamine therapy was initiated and regular cystine concentration measurements were performed. Although proteinuria persisted, the patient's renal function progressed slowly. Two renal biopsies were performed, and multinucleated podocytes and cystine crystals without focal segmental glomerulosclerosis lesions were observed in the biopsy specimens. The patient's renal function remained stable., Conclusions: This case of intermediate cystinosis was treated with cysteamine over the course of 10 years. 44. Transcriptome analysis of the common moss Bryum pseudotriquetrum grown under Antarctic field condition.

Abstract

Mosses are distributed all over the world including Antarctica. Although Antarctic mosses show active growth in a short summer season under harsh environments such as low temperature, drought and high levels of UV radiation, survival mechanisms for such multiple environmental stresses of Antarctic mosses have not yet been clarified. In the present study, transcriptome analyses were performed using one of the common mosses Bryum pseudotriquetrum grown under an Antarctic field and artificial cultivation conditions. Totally 88 205 contigs were generated by de novo assembly, among which 1377 and 435 genes were significantly up and downregulated, respectively, under Antarctic field conditions compared with artificial cultivation conditions at 15°C. Among the upregulated genes, a number of lipid metabolism-related and oil body formation-related genes were identified. Expression levels of these genes were increased by artificial environmental stress treatments such as low temperature, salt and osmic stress treatments. Consistent with these results, B . pseudotriquetrum grown under Antarctic field conditions contained large amounts of fatty acids, especially α-linolenic acid, linolenic acid and arachidonic acid. In addition, proportion of unsaturated fatty acids, which enhance membrane fluidity, to the total fatty acids was also higher in B . pseudotriquetrum grown under Antarctic field conditions. Since lipid accumulation and unsaturation of fatty acids are generally important factors for the acquisition of various environmental stress tolerance in plants, these intracellular physiological and metabolic changes may be responsible for the survival of B . pseudotriquetrum under Antarctic harsh environments., (© The Author(s) 2024. Abstract

Aims: Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is an established treatment for drug-refractory heart failure (HF) in patients with left bundle branch block (LBBB). Acute haemodynamic improvement after CRT implantation may enable the intensification of HF medication soon thereafter. Immediate pharmacotherapy intensification (IPI) after CRT implantation achieves a synergetic effect, possibly leading to a better prognosis. This study aimed to explore the incidence, characteristics, and impact of IPI on real-world outcomes among CRT recipients with a history of hospitalization for acute HF., Methods and Results: This multicentre retrospective study enrolled CRT recipients with LBBB morphology, a QRS width ≥120 ms, a left ventricular ejection fraction ≤35%, and New York Heart Association II-IV HF symptoms. All patients had previous HF hospitalizations within the previous year and received guideline-directed medical therapy before CRT implantation. Patient baseline characteristics, including HF medication, were collected. IPI was defined as the intensification of beta-blockers, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, and mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists within 30 days of CRT implantation. The primary endpoint was all-cause death or first hospitalization for HF; the secondary endpoint was all-cause death. We enrolled 194 patients (75% male; mean age, 65 ± 13 years; 78% with non-ischaemic cardiomyopathy). One hundred five (54%) patients received IPI. Patients who received IPI exhibited a significantly shorter QRS duration (159 ± 26 vs. 171 ± 32 ms; P = 0.004), higher estimated glomerular filtration rate (55.2 ± 20.0 vs. 47.8 ± 24.7 mL/min/1.73 m 2 ; P = 0.022), and more dilated cardiomyopathy. During a median follow-up period of 29 months, 70 (36%) patients reached the primary endpoint and 42 (22%) patients died. Patients with IPI showed significantly better outcomes for the primary and secondary endpoints than patients without IPI. The volumetric responder ratio at 6 months after implantation was not significantly different between patients with and without IPI; however, patients who received IPI had reduced mortality even at 6 months after implantation. In the multivariate analysis, IPI was an independent predictor of the primary endpoint (hazard ratio, 0.51; 95% confidence interval, 0.27-0.97; P = 0.043)., Conclusions: Immediate intensification of HF medication was achieved in 54% of CRT recipients and was significantly higher in patients without excessive QRS prolongation, preserved renal function, and dilated cardiomyopathy than others. Abstract

The timing of seed germination is controlled by the combination of internal dormancy and external factors. Temperature is a major environmental factor for seed germination. The permissive temperature range for germination is narrow in dormant seeds and expands during after-ripening (AR) (dormancy release). Quantitative trait loci analyses of preharvest sprouting in cereals have revealed that MKK3, a mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascade protein, is a negative regulator of grain dormancy. Here, we show that the MAPKKK19/20-MKK3-MPK1/2/7/14 cascade modulates the germination temperature range in Arabidopsis seeds by elevating the germinability of the seeds at sub- and supraoptimal temperatures. The expression of MAPKKK19 and MAPKKK20 is induced around optimal temperature for germination in after-ripened seeds but repressed in dormant seeds. MPK7 activation depends on the expression levels of MAPKKK19/20 , with expression occurring under conditions permissive for germination. Abscisic acid (ABA) and gibberellin (GA) are two major phytohormones which are involved in germination control. Activation of the MKK3 cascade represses ABA biosynthesis enzyme gene expression and induces expression of ABA catabolic enzyme and GA biosynthesis enzyme genes, resulting in expansion of the germinable temperature range. Abstract

Perfectly diffuse sound fields play an important role in architectural acoustics and there are established theoretical characterizations of perfect diffuseness. Although sound fields in real rooms are diffuse to some extent, they are not perfectly diffuse, and therefore theories are required to describe pseudo-perfectly diffuse sound fields. Here, we aim to spatially characterize pseudo-perfect diffuseness via directional characterization of that, finite-degree spherical harmonic diffuseness. Abstract

Background: This study describes an outbreak caused by multispecies carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPE) occurring in a pediatric ward at an academic medical center in Tokyo., Methods: The index case involved a 1-year-old boy with Klebsiella variicola (CPE) detected in anal swabs in June 2016. The second case was Klebsiella quasipneumoniae (CPE) occurred in March 2017 followed by further spread, leading to the declaration of an outbreak in April 2017. Extensive environmental and patient microbiological sampling was performed. The relatedness of the isolates was determined using draft-whole-genome sequencing., Results: CPE surveillance cultures of patients and environments were positive in 19 patients and 9 sinks in the ward. The sinks in hospital rooms uninhabited by CPE patients exhibited no positive CPE-positive specimen during the outbreak. All CPE strains analyzed using draft-whole-genome sequencing harbored bla IMP-1 , except for one harboring bla IMP-11 ; these strains harbored identical bla IMP-1 -carrying IncM1 plasmids. CPE was detected even after sink replacement; infection-control measures focused on sinks were implemented and the CPE outbreak ended after 7 months., Conclusions: Multiple bacterial species can become CPE via bla IMP-1 -carrying IncM1 plasmids of the same origin and spread through sinks in a hospital ward. 50. New rat model of spinal cord infarction with long-lasting functional disabilities generated by intraspinal injection of endothelin-1.

Abstract

Background: The current method for generating an animal model of spinal cord (SC) infarction is highly invasive and permits only short-term observation, typically limited to 28 days., Objective: We aimed to establish a rat model characterised by long-term survival and enduring SC dysfunction by inducing selective ischaemic SC damage., Methods: In 8-week-old male Wistar rats, a convection-enhanced delivery technique was applied to selectively deliver endothelin-1 (ET-1) to the anterior horn of the SC at the Th13 level, leading to SC infarction. The Basso, Beattie and Bresnahan (BBB) locomotor score was assessed for 56 days. The SC was examined by a laser tissue blood flowmeter, MRI, immunohistochemistry, triphenyl tetrazolium chloride (TTC) staining, Western blots and TUNEL staining., Results: The puncture method was used to bilaterally inject 0.7 µL ET-1 (2.5 mg/mL) from the lateral SC into the anterior horns (40° angle, 1.5 mm depth) near the posterior root origin. Animals survived until day 56 and the BBB score was stably maintained (5.5±1.0 at day 14 and 6.2±1.0 at day 56). Rats with BBB scores ≤1 on day 1 showed stable scores of 5-6 after day 14 until day 56 while rats with BBB scores >1 on day 1 exhibited only minor dysfunction with BBB scores >12 after day 14. TTC staining, immunostaining and TUNEL staining revealed selective ischaemia and neuronal cell death in the anterior horn. T2-weighted MR images showed increasing signal intensity at the SC infarction site over time. Western blots revealed apoptosis and subsequent inflammation in SC tissue after ET-1 administration., Conclusions: Selective delivery of ET-1 into the SC allows for more precise localisation of the infarcted area at the targeted site and generates a rat SC infarction model with stable neurological dysfunction lasting 56 days., Competing Interests: Competing interests: None declared., (© Author(s) (or their employer(s)) 2024.
