Objective: The goal of the present work was the identification and quantification of the phenolic profile of sweet basil using LC-ESI-MS and to evaluation the ability of this plant to synthesise manganese nanoparticles MnONPs and evaluation of their catalytic and thrombolytic activities. Material and methods: Standard procedures were used to extract bioactive molecules and test qualitative phytochemical substances. Phenolic compounds were identified and quantified using LC-ESI-MS. Furthermore, visual observation, UV–Vis and FT-IR spectroscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopes (SEM and TEM), and XRD technique were used to verify the green synthesis of ObE-MnO NPs. Dye degradation of ObE-MnO NPs was studied using photocatalytic and sonocatalytic activities. Moreover, in vitro thrombolytic activity was evaluated by clot lysis. Results: Results of phytochemical essays showed that the aqueous extract of Ocimum basilicum L. is very rich in different chemical compounds that reduce and stabilize NPs. The results of the characterization of MnONPs show that the formation of these particles was proven by UV–Vis spectrum with the absorption peak at 405 nm, and also by FTIR spectrum at 470-522 cm−1. The study also confirmed that the MnONPs were spherical in shape with an average size of 6.52 ± 0.88 nm using TEM and SEM analysis, and that their size was 13.4 nm, tetragonal, and crystalline by XRD data. Results of catalytique activity show at a time of 240 min, an efficacy level of 70.18% and 58.90% for the photocatalytic and sonocatalytic activities. Ocimum basilicum L. extract and ObE-MnO NPs demonstrated a significant higher percentage of clot lysis by 93.33% and 94.73% respectively. Conclusion: In conclusion, the synthesized NPs made with basil extract were satisfactorily characterized utilizing a range of analytical techniques. ObE-MnO NPs also exhibit efficient catalytic and thrombolytic activities, qualifying their high degree of safety for usage in the environmental, pharmacological and medicinal domains.

In this study, drying techniques including lyophilization, forced convection, marquee with polyshade, and refractive window were evaluated in the post-harvest residue of Nufar variety basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) in the department of Tolima, Colombia. The physicochemical and bromatological analysis showed that lyophilization and forced convection better maintained the organoleptic properties of dry basil, while the marquee with polyshade technique did not affect the phenolic content and antioxidant capacity. The refractive window technique showed higher rehydration capacity but lower essential oil content. In the sensory evaluation, the infusions of dried leaves in the marquee with polyshade method were highly accepted. The results suggest that drying by forced convection and marquee with polyshade are effective methods to preserve the quality of dried basil, presenting a viable alternative for the use of post-harvest residue and improving the useful life of the product, benefitting local producers by increased employability and added value.

Purpose: This experiment was carried out to examine the impacts of glycine betaine (GB) and methionine (Met) on basil plants' biochemical and morphological traits in two experiments under greenhouse conditions at Guilan University, Iran. Research method: Two completely randomized plans were used for the experiment, each involving three replications. The experiment factors during the first experiment were various amounts of GB (0, 50, 100, and 150 mg. L-1), and in the second experiment, we utilized four Met quantities (0, 50, 100, and 150 mg L-1). Findings: The results showed that GB utilized at 150 mg L-1 led to the maximum leaf fresh and dry weight, stem dry weight, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total antioxidants, and leaf calcium and nitrogen content. The treatments with GB had a 1000 seed weight higher than the control. According to the results, leaf fresh and dry weight, root dry weight, and chlorophyll a and b in control were significantly higher than other Met treatments. Root fresh weight and the florets number per plant in control and 50 mg L-1 Met were significantly higher than in other treatments. Besides, the 50 mg L-1 Met treatments resulted in higher total phenol, antioxidants, and leaf phosphorus content than the control. Research limitations: No limitations were found. Originality/Value: The findings of this experiment demonstrate that the use of Met in greenhouse conditions does not have significant effects on basil plants, but GB has significant effects.

Although post-distillation side-streams of basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) pose significant economic and environmental challenges, they also bring forth new opportunities in the flavor industry. Thus, the objective of the current study was to assess the phenolic profile of basil side-stream extracts to identify key compounds and to evaluate their taste properties, using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis, flavor prediction tools and molecular docking. In particular, 52 phytoconstituents, mainly phenolic acids, salvianolic acids, flavonoids and fatty acids derivatives, were elucidated in the side-streams of two different basil varieties (Minimum and Genovese) harvested and distilled in early and late autumn, highlighting the effect of pre-harvest factors on basil’s phenolic fingerprint. Furthermore, the results of tests undertaken using taste prediction tools showed that most of the identified compounds were very likely to taste bitter, while six of them (caffeoylferuloyltartaric acid, isoquercetin, lithospermic acid A, sagerinic acid, salvianolic acids C and F) presented a high bitterant capacity (70–90%). Moreover, according to molecular docking studies, these compounds exhibited a stronger binding affinity to the hTAS2R46 bitter receptor compared to its known agonist, strychnine. This outcome and consequently their bitterness were mainly attributed to interactions with Glu265, Thr180 and/or Trp88 through the formation of direct hydrogen bonds. Therefore, the present results provide insights into the taste profiles of basil side-streams, leading to more sustainable and innovative uses of aromatic herbs residues.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of solar drying and oven drying methods on the quality parameters of dried basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) leaves. The dried basil leaves were dehydrated at three different levels of temperature (T1, T2, and T3 = 50 °C, 55 °C, and 60 °C) using a solar tunnel dryer and an electrical oven dryer. Drying time, energy consumption, dehydration ratio, rehydration ratio, pH, and reducing sugar were observed after drying the basil leaves. The results showed that solar drying at 55 °C required the least energy (0.431 kWh) and took the shortest amount of time (110 min) to complete, whereas oven drying consumed more energy. Additionally, oven drying maintained a low pH (4.30) and reducing sugar level (2.24), extending the shelf life of the dried basil leaves, compared to solar drying. Based on energy consumption, drying time, and mineral contents, the solar drying using a solar tunnel dryer was deemed more suitable than oven drying. The best temperature for drying was determined to be 55 °C, which provided a short drying time, the least energy consumption and a statistically non-significant loss of mineral contents and dehydration ratio. Moreover, solar drying demonstrated a significantly higher speed, with a 6.7-times higher drying rate compared to oven drying, with significantly less energy consumption.

Basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) is a vital aromatic crop widely utilized in culinary and fragrance industries. The present study was conducted to implement a two-year field experiment (2019 and 2020) aimed to assess the impact of various fertilizers on the growth, yield, and essential oil composition of basil cultivated in Thanh Hoa Province, Vietnam. The fertilizer treatments included: no fertilizer (control), chemical fertilizer (NPK at 90-120-90 kg/ha), cow manure, chicken manure, and a combination of chemical fertilizer, cow manure, and chicken manure. The application of fertilizers resulted in significant improvements across various parameters compared to the control group. Basil plants treated with fertilizers exhibited increased height, la teral stem count, fresh and dry yields, chlorophyll and carotenoid content, essential oil yield, and essential oil content. The essential oil extracted from basil contained notable volatile compounds, with methyl chavicol, linalool, β-elemene, and epi-α-cadinol identified as the major constituents. The proportions of these compounds varied among the fertilizer treatments. Notably, the combined fertilization approach involving chemical fertilizers, cow manure, and chicken manure emerged as the most effective and significant in promoting basil growth and essential oil production. These findings not only contribute to the optimization of basil cultivation practices but also provide insights for the agricultural community, emphasizing the importance of balanced fertilization for maximizing the quality and yield of basil essential oil in the Vietnamese context.

Abstract Background Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are emerging contaminants of increasing concern due to their presence in the environment, with potential impacts on ecosystems and human health. These substances are considered “forever chemicals” due to their recalcitrance to degradation, and their accumulation in living organisms can lead to varying levels of toxicity based on the compound and species analysed. Furthermore, concerns have been raised about the possible transfer of PFASs to humans through the consumption of edible parts of food plants. In this regard, to evaluate the potential toxic effects and the accumulation of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in edible plants, a pot experiment in greenhouse using three-week-old basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) plants was performed adding PFOA to growth substrate to reach 0.1, 1, and 10 mg Kg− 1 dw. Results After three weeks of cultivation, plants grown in PFOA-added substrate accumulated PFOA at different levels, but did not display significant differences from the control group in terms of biomass production, lipid peroxidation levels (TBARS), content of α-tocopherol and activity of ascorbate peroxidase (APX), catalase (CAT) and guaiacol peroxidase (POX) in the leaves. A reduction of total phenolic content (TPC) was instead observed in relation to the increase of PFOA content in the substrate. Furthermore, chlorophyll content and photochemical reflectance index (PRI) did not change in plants exposed to PFAS in comparison to control ones. Chlorophyll fluorescence analysis revealed an initial, rapid photoprotective mechanism triggered by PFOA exposure, with no impact on other parameters (Fv/Fm, ΦPSII and qP). Higher activity of glutathione S-transferase (GST) in plants treated with 1 and 10 mg Kg− 1 PFOA dw (30 and 50% to control, respectively) paralleled the accumulation of PFOA in the leaves of plants exposed to different PFOA concentration in the substrate (51.8 and 413.9 ng g− 1 dw, respectively). Conclusion Despite of the absorption and accumulation of discrete amount of PFOA in the basil plants, the analysed parameters at biometric, physiological and biochemical level in the leaves did not reveal any damage effect, possibly due to the activation of a detoxification pathway likely involving GST.

Abstract To investigate the effect of horsetail extract containing high silicon on morphological traits, growth, content, and compositions of essential oil of sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) an experiment turned into carried out in the shape of a randomized complete block design with three replications. Foliar treatment of horsetail extract with zero, 0.5, 1, and 2% concentrations was applied on 6–8 leaf plants. The assessed traits include plant height, number of leaves per plant, number of sub-branches, leaf area index, plant fresh weight, plant dry weight, total anthocyanin, the content of total phenol and total flavonoid, antioxidant activity, essential oil content, and compounds were measured. The findings demonstrated that the increase of silicon-containing horsetail extract enhanced the improved increase in growth and phytochemical trait values. The use of horsetail extract in the 2% treatment increased plant height, the number of leaves per plant, the number of sub-branches, leaf area index, fresh weight, and dry weight of the plant by 49.79, 45.61, 91.09, 99.78, 52.78 and 109.25%, respectively, compared to the control. The highest content of total phenol (2.12 mg GAE/g DW), total flavonoid (1.73 mg RE/g DW), total anthocyanin (0.83 mg C3G/g DW), and antioxidant activity (184.3 µg/ml) was observed in the 2% extract treatment. The content of essential oil increased with increasing the concentration of horsetail extract, so the highest amount of essential oil was obtained at the concentration of 2%, which increased by 134.78% compared to the control. By using GC–MS, the essential oil was analyzed. The main components of the essential oil include methyl eugenol (12.93–25.93%), eugenol (17.63–27.51%), 1,8-cineole (15.63–20.84%), linalool (8.31–19.63%) and (Z)-caryophyllene (6.02–14.93%). Increasing the concentration of horsetail extract increased the compounds of eugenol, 1,8-cineole, and linalool in essential oil compared to the control, but decreased the compounds of methyl eugenol and (Z)-caryophyllene. Foliar spraying of horsetail extract, which contains high amounts of silicon, as a stimulant and biological fertilizer, can be a beneficial ingredient in increasing the yield and production of medicinal plants, especially in organic essential oil production.

Basil is a highly valued aromatic plant worldwide, and drying is one of the best ways to preserve its leaves. Through a theoretical approach, the microwave drying of basil leaves can be modeled, and the effective diffusivity can be determined. However, using a model that considers moisture diffusion in the presence of intensive microwave energy is crucial. This study proposed a theoretical model to simulate the microwave drying of basil leaves in a thin layer. The model assumed that the material is homogeneous and isotropic, with the effective diffusivity depending on the microwave power. The model was solved numerically and validated with experimental data. The study also examined the effect of the microwave power on the color and bioactive properties during drying. The drying time was reduced by 60%, by increasing the microwave power from 199 W to 622 W. The effective diffusivity was found to be directly proportional to the microwave power. Drying at low powers was found to cause basil pigment degradation. However, drying at a power of 622 W resulted in better preservation of the leaves without browning. Finally, microwave drying negatively affects the bioactive compounds, as the phenolic content and antioxidant capacity in all the powers evaluated were significantly lower than in fresh basil leaves.

Abstract Exposure to N2O5 generated by plasma technology activates immunity in Arabidopsis through tryptophan metabolites. However, little is known about the effects of N2O5 exposure on other plant species. Sweet basil synthesizes many valuable secondary metabolites in its leaves. Therefore, metabolomic analyses were performed at three different exposure levels [9.7 (Ex1), 19.4 (Ex2) and 29.1 (Ex3) μmol] to assess the effects of N2O5 on basil leaves. As a result, cinnamaldehyde and phenolic acids increased with increasing doses. Certain flavonoids, columbianetin, and caryophyllene oxide increased with lower Ex1 exposure, cineole and methyl eugenol increased with moderate Ex2 exposure and l-glutathione GSH also increased with higher Ex3 exposure. Furthermore, gene expression analysis by quantitative RT-PCR showed that certain genes involved in the syntheses of secondary metabolites and jasmonic acid were significantly up-regulated early after N2O5 exposure. These results suggest that N2O5 exposure increases several valuable secondary metabolites in sweet basil leaves via plant defense responses in a controllable system.

This study investigated the insecticidal efficacy of essential oils (EOs) extracted from Ageratum conyzoides, Hyptis suaveolens, and Ocimum basilicum against female Anopheles mosquitoes, aiming to explore their potential as alternatives to synthetic insecticides amidst rising resistance issues. EOs were obtained through steam distillation from freshly harvested plant aerial parts, and their chemical compositions were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The results revealed significant variations in chemical profiles among the oils, with precocene I dominating in A. Conyzoides, eucalyptol in H. suaveolens, and estragole in O. basilicum. Thin layer chromatography analyses revealed various components with rf values ranging from 0.25 – 0.93. Mosquito bioassay demonstrated varying knockdown effects across the oils, with H. suavolens achieving 77.5% knockdown within six minutes of the observation period. None of the oils or their combinations reached susceptibility status (98–100% mortality), indicating prevalent resistance among the mosquito population in the study area. The combination of A. conyzoides and H. suavolens essential oil gave the highest percentage mortality (70%) at the least time (9 minutes), this is a suggestion of synergistic activity. Despite resistance challenges, this study highlights the promise of botanical insecticides in sustainable mosquito control and underscores the ongoing need for innovation and adaptation in vector management strategies.

Penurunan kualitas kayu akibat serangan rayap kayu terus meningkat. Ekstrak daun kemangi (Ocimum basilicum L.) memiliki efek sebagai bioinsektisida terhadap serangga penghasil Rayap karena memiliki berbagai antioksidan yang bersifat racun. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui uji pH ekstrak daun kemangi, uji Kromatografi Lapis Tipis (KLT) dan uji daya tolak rayap. Metode berbasis maserasi menggunakan variasi pelarut di antaranya etanol 96% dan diklorometana (DCM). Dilanjutkan penguapan menggunakan vacum rotary evaporator dan dilakukan beberapa pengujian di antaranya uji pH, uji Kromatografi Lapis Tipis, dan uji daya tolak rayap. Hasil uji pH ekstrak daun kemangi menggunakan pelarut etanol 96% memiliki nilai pH 6-7 yang merupakan standar nilai pH yang aman bagi kulit manusia. Hasil dari uji daya tolak rayap menggunakan pelarut DCM menunjukkan proses pembasmian yang cukup cepat dan efektif. Hasil uji KLT menunjukkan adanya kandungan flavanoid dengan nilai Rf sebesar 0,5, nilai Rf tanin sebesar 0,69, dan nilai Rf saponin sebesar 0,6.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of the extracted plants basil (Ocimum basilicum L.), sage (Salvia officinalis L.), lavender (Lavandula officinalis L.), immortelle (Helichrysum italicum (Roth) G. Don), savory (Satureja montana L.), and rosemary (Salvia rosmarinus Spenn.) against foodborne and clinical pathogens. Dried plants were used in the production of Dalmatian cow’s milk hard cheese at concentrations of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2% to evaluate the microbiological safety and sensory properties of novel cheeses. The broadest antimicrobial activity was found in rosemary and sage, inhibiting ten indicator pathogens, and the strongest antimicrobial activity was found in immortelle and sage, which showed the widest zones of inhibition. The most sensitive indicators were Staphylococcus species and Yersinia enterocolitica. The supplemented cheeses met the official microbiological criteria and were mycotoxin negative. The surface mycobiota of control and experimental cheeses consisted mainly of Penicillium sollitum, based on the sequence analysis of the beta-tubulin and calmodulin genes. The antifungal effect of the added plants was clearly demonstrated in cheeses with added basil and sage (p < 0.05).

Abstract Background The biochemical and growth changes resulting from exposure of basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) seedlings to silver nanoparticles and silver were investigated. Over a two-week period, seedlings were exposed to different concentrations (0, 40, and 80 ppm) of silver nanoparticles and silver. Results Our findings revealed that at concentrations of 40 and 80 ppm, both silver nanoparticles and silver nitrate led to decreased weight, root and shoot length, as well as chlorophyll a and b content. Conversely, these treatments triggered an increase in key biochemical properties, such as total phenols, carotenoids and anthocyanins, with silver nanoparticles showing a more pronounced effect compared to silver nitrate. Moreover, the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) rose proportionally with treatment concentration, with the nanoparticle treatment exhibiting a more substantial increase. Silver content showed a significant upswing in both roots and leaves as treatment concentrations increased. Conclusions Application of varying concentrations of silver nanoparticles and silver nitrate on basil plants resulted in reduced growth and lower chlorophyll content, while simultaneously boosting the production of antioxidant compounds. Notably, anthocyanin, carotenoid, and total phenol increased significantly. However, despite this increase in antioxidant activity, the plant remained unable to fully mitigate the oxidative stress induced by silver and silver nanoparticles.

Background: Sweet Basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) is regarded as a significant plant. They include a wide variety of bioactive substances, particularly phenolic substances which contribute to the plant's alleged health advantages. Aim: The objective of this study was to identify and characterize the phenolic profile of sweet basil using HPLC-Q-TOF-MS in order to evaluate its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Methods: By using standard protocols, Bioactive molecules were extracted and qualitative tests of phytochemicals were also released as well as quantitative analyses of total phenols, total flavonoids, and total hydrolysable tannins. Using HPLCQ-TOF-MS, phenolic compounds can be identified. Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities were studied by DPPH, FRAP, RBC membrane stabilization and BSA anti denaturation assays. Results: 30 phenolic compounds in this plant were identified by the HPLC-Q-TOF-MS analysis. Moreover, the TPC, TFC, and THTC of sweet basil was systematically assessed, and then its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties were evaluated using the DPPH, FRAP, RBC membrane stabilization, and BSA anti denaturation assays. Significant anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects were also seen in the plant extracts with high phenolic, flavonoid, and tannin content. Conclusion: The results demonstrate the value of sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) which may be used in the food and health industries as promising sources of phenolic chemicals.
