Abstract

Oral Interview with Valerie Nelson, Diane Gira, and their adopted son Madison Nelson-Gira conducted by Maxine Fagerland on February 2, 2019, at their home near Wahpeton, N.D. The interview discusses their lives growing up in the Breckenridge/Wahpeton area, conversation about their open adoption with Madison, religion, coming out, local churches, religious discrimination, parenting as two moms, socializing in the area, PFLAG, political activity, activism, meeting President Obama in 2013, submitting a stole to the Stoles Project, and an interview for National Public Radio., Digital audio; Transcripts, In November 2017, the Red River Rainbow Seniors began an oral history project, “Breaking Barriers: Harvesting LGBTQ Stories from the Northern Plains,” to gather the histories of older LGBTQ people and their allies in North Dakota and Northern Minnesota in their own words. Funding for transcribing the interviews and creating the archives was provided by FM Pride, by generous donors, and by Humanities North Dakota, a nonprofit, independent state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities. 31. Two Planning Studies on Open Learning.

Abstract

This analysis of current and future programs of the Massachusetts State College System examines the potential relationship between the Massachusetts State College System and the providers of Postsecondary Education other than degree-granting colleges and universities that might be established through the Massachusetts Open University, and identifies the special clientele groups that might be serviced by the Massachusetts State College System in cooperation with the proposed Massachusetts Open University. It was found that the open learning network should recognize and legitimize educational activities in non-degree-granting institutions and programs by providing means of certifying some of the existing programs for credit and of examining graduates of other institutions for competency. The target clientele is arranged into three general groups--disadvantaged, "second chance," and those already making use of the existing continuing education system. Discussed are group characteristics and needed services. Also discussed are financial structures for the open learning network and possible means of providing them, including aid to students, institutions, and target groups. (Author/KE)

Abstract

This report presents results of a study addressing two questions: (1) the role of certificates, licenses, diplomas, and other creditials in a decentralized vocational education system of public and proprietary schools, community colleges, union apprenticeships, the military, and correspondence schools and (2) the role that certification can play in the CETA (Comprehensive Employment and Training Act) system. The first section discusses functions of certification, describes various postsecondary vocational certificates and their requirements, and presents evidence of the role of certification in training programs and the labor market. It concludes with a description of reform efforts, such as increased attention to basic skills and work attitudes in training, certificate standardization, research on predictive validity of certification instruments, and development of new tests and tools to document skills. The second section shows how the lessons of certification can be applied to CETA. A certification process for CETA is recommended which includes a national prototype one-page skill record for use by local trainers; an exploration of use of national standardized competency-based tests of specialized skills, work habits, and basic skills with national minimum passage standards; and the establishment of a full-time placement office for each prime sponsor to market both graduates and tests/training standards. Abstract

This document presents Parts 1 and 2 of a study of continuing and part-time study in Massachusetts. Part 1, summary report and recommendations, is a review of: criteria for shaping a new public policy for continuing education in Massachusetts, the phenomenon of continuing and part-time postsecondary education, the present system of part-time and continuing education, and recommendations. Recommendations cover strengthening the alternative system, interinstitutional cooperation and coordination, statewide planning coordination and program review, access, finance, institutions of the core and the periphery, organization and management in public and private institutions, organizing and using available educational technology, potential user demand estimation as a basis for planning continuing education, continuing education and the economy, and the role of the proposed Massachusetts open university as part of the alternative postsecondary education system. Part 2, the technical report, presents statistical data and other necessary materials to support the recommendations. (MJM)

44. Implementation of Post-Transplant Care Guidelines for Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant Recipients

Abstract

Purpose. The purpose of this quality improvement (QI) project was to implement an evidence-based follow-up guideline tool for allogeneic stem cell recipients who are over three months—or approximately 100 days—post-transplant at Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center (BMDACC). The goal was to encourage providers at BMDACC to utilize the guidelines to provide long-term follow-up care for allogeneic stem cell transplant patients after three months post-transplant.Background. Allogeneic (non-self-donor) hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) is a potentially curative procedure for several hematological malignancies. Allogeneic HSCT is associated with late complications—occurring after 100 days post-transplant—that impact survivors’ life expectancy and quality of life. Over 65,000 allogeneic HSCTs occur worldwide every year. Nearly 75% of survivors will experience at least one late complication. These complications physically, mentally, and emotionally affect survivors. Providing long-term follow-up care for these patients improves health and safety by preventing complications that put them at risk for early mortality. Methods. This QI project was implemented by providing education at a synchronous online meeting regarding allogeneic HSCT and late effects and introducing the guidelines. Two surveys were delivered via email to participants to complete before and after the education. A third survey was delivered via email three weeks after implementing the guidelines to evaluate provider use and impression. Results. Of the 12 individuals invited to participate, five participants responded to the pre-survey, one responded to the post-survey, and five responded to the follow-up survey. The one participant who completed the pre- and post-survey answered more questions correctly on the post-survey than the pre-survey.
