In years 1980-1994, 180 sudden hearing loss cases were diagnosed and treated. Sudden deafness is a symptom of a variety of diseases. Time is often the most important factor in the overall recovery. However the etiology was difficult to identify, precise examinations permitted to determine the probable diagnosis and to apply appropriate treatment. In cases with expected vascular etiology Nimodypine was additionally employed with good results. The most frequent reason for sudden hearing loss was vascular factors (50%), next viral infections (25%), acoustic trauma (10%), allergy (5%), and unknown causes (10%). The best results were obtained in the patients under treatment between 1 and 7 days of sudden deafness persistence. Remarkably better results were received in cases of sudden deafness concerning wide frequency band than in those within high tones only.

The authors present two cases of acute otitis media complicated by perceptive hearing loss. According to the foreign publications they discuss reasons and ways of spreading the infections into the internal ear.

Cell-mediated immunity has been assessed in 20 patients with chronic tonsillitis with CNI multitest. The test was performed both prior to and after tonsillectomy. A reduced skin reactivity, especially after surgery, has been observed in patients as compared with a control group.

It's evident nowadays, that the population of AIDS infected people will increase. In 88% cases the ENT specialists could be the first contact doctors for HIV-positive patients. This fact makes necessary for them to know as well as possible clinical symptoms, etiopathology and immunology of AIDS. The authors present in this paper some of these problems.

The authors present the problem with HIV positive patients which have an ear, nose and throat disease. ENT doctors are the group of high risk of AIDS. Up to now we haven't got a test useful for early diagnosis in AIDS (specially this period between infection and seroconversion+--"serological window"). This fact requires special cautions from ENT surgeons++. The authors describe the methods of individual prevention from AIDS and, the surgical instruments sterilization.

Long-term clinical experience and follow-up of 213 patients with the acute and chronic sinusitis resulted in the model of diagnosis and treatment. This model is based on detailed evaluation of lesions to the mucous membrane and the degree of naso-frontal channel capacity. Designed method enables local treatment and complete recovery of the majority of patients.

Silokon foil was used as a separator inside the cavum tympani in 53 cases. According to our studies and quoted references good results were obtained.

In ENT Clinic, II Faculty of Medical Academy in Warszawa 108 patients with precancerous lesions were treated by cryosurgery during the years 1975-84. In 43 patients the lesions were in oral and in pharyngeal cavities, 33 out of 43 have had before the cryosurgery some form of therapy, conservative or radical without lasting effects. In all treated cryosurgically patients the positive results were obtained, which were consecutively verified during 3 to 9 years of observations. There were no malignant transformations, no other complications. The authors found, that the cryosurgery is a promising method of therapy in precancerous lesions.

The authors present the case of a 35 year old woman with the very rare previous symptom of lymphogranulomatosis maligna in the nasopharyngeal area. Also, they present some difficulties occurred in the medical diagnosis as well as in the histopathological recognition.

Recent advances regarding the interplay between ab initio calculations and metrology are reviewed, with particular emphasis on gas-based techniques used for temperature and pressure measurements. Since roughly 2010, several thermophysical quantities – in particular, virial and transport coefficients – can be computed from first principles without uncontrolled approximations and with rigorously propagated uncertainties. In the case of helium, computational results have accuracies that exceed the best experimental data by at least one order of magnitude and are suitable to be used in primary metrology. The availability of ab initio virial and transport coefficients contributed to the recent SI definition of temperature by facilitating measurements of the Boltzmann constant with unprecedented accuracy. Presently, they enable the development of primary standards of thermodynamic temperature in the range 2.5–552 K and pressure up to 7 MPa using acoustic gas thermometry, dielectric constant gas thermometry, and refractive index gas thermometry. These approaches will be reviewed, highlighting the effect of first-principles data on their accuracy. The recent advances in electronic structure calculations that enabled highly accurate solutions for the many-body interaction potentials and polarizabilities of atoms – particularly helium – will be described, together with the subsequent computational methods, most often based on quantum statistical mechanics and its path-integral formulation, that provide thermophysical properties and their uncertainties. We introduce a dataset of 24 interaction energy curves of open-shell noncovalent dimers, referred to as the O24 × 5 dataset. The dataset consists of high-spin dimers up to 11 atoms selected to assure diversity with respect to interaction types: dispersion, electrostatics, and induction. The benchmark interaction energies are obtained at the restricted open-shell CCSD(T) level of theory with complete basis set extrapolation (from aug-cc-pVQZ to aug-cc-pV5Z). We have analyzed the performance of selected wave function methods MP2, CCSD, and CCSD(T) as well as the F12a and F12b variants of coupled-cluster theory. In addition, we have tested dispersion-corrected density functional theory methods based on the PBE exchange-correlation model. The O24 × 5 dataset is a challenge to approximate methods due to the wide range of interaction energy strengths it spans. For the dispersion-dominated and mixed-type subsets, any tested method that does not include the triples contribution yields errors on the order of tens of percent. The electrostatic subset is less demanding with errors that are typically an order of magnitude smaller than the mixed and dispersion-dominated subsets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In symmetry-adapted perturbation theory (SAPT), accurate calculations on non-covalent interaction (NCI) for large complexes with more than 50 atoms are time-consuming using large basis sets. More efficient ones with smaller basis sets usually result in poor prediction in terms of dispersion and overall energies. In this study, we propose two composite methods with baseline calculated at SAPT2/aug-cc-pVDZ and SAPT2/aug-cc-pVTZ with dispersion term corrected at SAPT2+ level using bond functions and smaller basis set with δ MP2 corrections respectively. Benchmark results on representative NCI data sets, such as S22, S66, and so forth, show significant improvements on the accuracy compared to the original SAPT Silver standard and comparable to SAPT Gold standard in some cases with much less computational cost., (© 2024 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

PSI4 is a free and open-source ab initio electronic structure program providing implementations of Hartree–Fock, density functional theory, many-body perturbation theory, configuration interaction, density cumulant theory, symmetry-adapted perturbation theory, and coupled-cluster theory. Most of the methods are quite efficient, thanks to density fitting and multi-core parallelism. The program is a hybrid of C++ and Python, and calculations may be run with very simple text files or using the Python API, facilitating post-processing and complex workflows; method developers also have access to most of PSI4's core functionalities via Python. Job specification may be passed using The Molecular Sciences Software Institute (MolSSI) QCSCHEMA data format, facilitating interoperability. A rewrite of our top-level computation driver, and concomitant adoption of the MolSSI QCARCHIVE INFRASTRUCTURE project, makes the latest version of PSI4 well suited to distributed computation of large numbers of independent tasks. Symmetry-adapted perturbation theory (SAPT) is a method for calculations of intermolecular (noncovalent) interaction energies. The set of SAPT codes that is described here, the current version named SAPT2020, includes virtually all variants of SAPT developed so far, among them two-body SAPT based on perturbative, coupled cluster, and density functional theory descriptions of monomers, three-body SAPT, and two-body SAPT for some classes of open-shell monomers. The properties of systems governed by noncovalent interactions can be predicted only if potential energy surfaces (force fields) are available. SAPT is the preferred approach for generating such surfaces since it is seamlessly connected to the asymptotic expansion of interaction energy. SAPT2020 includes codes for automatic development of such surfaces, enabling generation of complete dimer surfaces with a rigid monomer approximation for dimers containing about one hundred atoms. These codes can also be used to obtain surfaces including internal degrees of freedom of monomers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two generations of one family with Alport syndrome were studied. The observation proved that women do transmit the disease, but men have signs more developed. As symptoms of the disease were pathological changes of chronic interstitial haemorrhagic pyelonephritis associated with bilateral hearing loss of cochlear type. In patients with pronounced hearing impairment (in the spiral organ) the kidney pathology was not advanced and the course of the illness rather mild. We believe that patients with kidney pathology should have their hearing examined as routine proceeding because hearing impairment is frequently associated with kidney pathology as in Alport's syndrome and other diseases. This coincidence may help in diagnosis, choice of treatment and prognostic evaluation.
