Phased-array metasurfaces have been extensively used for wavefront shaping of coherent incident light. Due to the incoherent nature of spontaneous emission, the ability to similarly tailor photoluminescence remains largely unexplored. Recently, unidirectional photoluminescence from InGaN/GaN quantum-well metasurfaces incorporating one-dimensional phase profiles has been shown. However, the possibility of generating arbitrary two-dimensional waveforms-such as focused beams-is not yet realized. Here, we demonstrate two-dimensional metasurface axicons and lenses that emit collimated and focused beams, respectively. First, we develop off-axis meta-axicon/metalens equations designed to redirect surface-guided waves that dominate the natural emission pattern of quantum wells. Next, we show that photoluminescence properties are well predicted by passive transmission results using suitably engineered incident light sources. Finally, we compare collimating and focusing performances across a variety of different light-emitting metasurface axicons and lenses. These generated two-dimensional phased-array photoluminescence waveforms facilitate future development of light sources with arbitrary functionalities.

Despite the salient experience of encoding threatening events, these memories are prone to distortions and often non-veridical from encoding to recall. Further, threat has been shown to preferentially disrupt the binding of event details and enhance goal-relevant information. While extensive work has characterised distinctive features of emotional memory, research has not fully explored the influence threat has on temporal memory, a process putatively supported by the binding of event details into a temporal context. Two primary competing hypotheses have been proposed; that threat can impair or enhance temporal memory. We analysed two datasets to assess temporal memory for an in-person haunted house experience. In study 1, we examined the temporal structure of memory by characterising memory contiguity in free recall as a function of individual levels of heart rate as a proxy of threat. In study 2, we replicated marginal findings of threat-related increases in memory contiguity found in study 1. We extended these findings by showing threat-related increases in recency discriminations, an explicit test of temporal memory. Together, these findings demonstrate that threat enhances temporal memory regarding free recall structure and during explicit memory judgments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bacillary hemoglobinuria (BH) is an infectious disease, mostly affecting cattle, caused by Clostridium haemolyticum (C. novyi type D), with acute hepatic necrosis and intravascular hemolysis. Cattle are typically predisposed to BH by liver injury caused by Fasciola hepatica, although cases have been reported in cattle without evidence of this parasite. Here we describe a cluster of 14 BH cases from 7 counties in north-central to central Missouri submitted to a veterinary diagnostic laboratory between December 2020 and April 2023. Postmortem examination in all cases revealed hemoglobinuria and acute hepatic necrosis with large numbers of gram-positive bacilli with terminal-to-subterminal spores. Flukes, fluke ova, and/or fluke pigment consistent with Fascioloides magna were identified in 12 of 14 cases. Sequences of the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) from one fluke had 100% identity to F. magna. C. novyi was detected by fluorescent antibody testing of liver impression smears (11 of 12 cases) and by immunohistochemistry of liver sections (7 of 7 cases). PCR on formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues amplified the C. haemolyticum beta toxin gene in each of the 7 cases tested. We report on the influence of variations in the process parameters of an in-situ surface cleaning procedure, consisting of alternating cycles of nitrogen plasma and trimethylaluminum dosing, on the interface trap density of highly scaled HfO2gate dielectrics deposited on n-In0.53Ga0.47As by atomic layer deposition. We discuss the interface chemistry of stacks resulting from the pre-deposition exposure to nitrogen plasma/trimethylaluminum cycles. Measurements of interface trap densities, interface chemistry, and surface morphology show that variations in the cleaning process have a large effect on nucleation and surface coverage, which in turn are crucial for achieving low interface state densities.

Dietary ingestion of (n-3) PUFA alters the production of eicosanoids and can suppress chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The extent of changes in eicosanoid production during an infection of mice fed a diet high in (n-3) PUFA, however, has not, to our knowledge, been reported. We fed mice a diet containing either 18% by weight soybean oil (SO) or a mixture with fish oil (FO), FO:SO (4:1 ratio), for 2 wk and then infected them with Borrelia burgdorferi. We used an MS-based lipidomics approach and quantified changes in eicosanoid production during Lyme arthritis development over 21 d. B. burgdorferi infection induced a robust production of prostanoids, mono-hydroxylated metabolites, and epoxide-containing metabolites, with 103 eicosanoids detected of the 139 monitored. In addition to temporal and compositional changes in the eicosanoid profile, dietary FO substitution increased the accumulation of 15-deoxy PGJ(2), an antiinflammatory metabolite derived from arachidonic acid. Chiral analysis of the mono-hydroxylated metabolites revealed they were generated from primarily nonenzymatic mechanisms. Although dietary FO substitution reduced the production of inflammatory (n-6) fatty acid-derived eicosanoids, no change in the host inflammatory response or development of disease was detected.

The text is a translation of W. J. T. Mitchell’s essay included in his book Image Science. Iconology, Visual Culture, and Media Aesthetics (2015). It is an extensive, cultural reflection on the notion of borders and boundaries in terms of their diverse meanings, functions and interactions that take place across borders. Borders are treated as both physical boundaries and virtual or imaginary divisions, addressed here in the sphere of geopolitics and media. The axis of his discussions are notions of translations and convergence as dynamic, productive and destructive, war or war-like interactions governed by different structures of power. This is what the scholar calls border wars. Mitchell’s examples include the Israeli-Palestine and North and South Korean borders, divisions and tensions between language and images. He concludes with an analysis of a film – John Frankenheimer’s The Manchurian Candidate (1962) – and the Showtime television series Homeland (2011–2020), where he investigates virtual, ideological border wars generated in the Cold War and war on terror periods.
