This paper studies the effects of carbon pricing on inflation dynamics. We construct a sample of carbon taxes implemented in Europe and Canada over three decades and estimate the response of inflation and price components to carbon pricing. Our empirical results suggest that carbon taxes did not significantly increase inflation, with dynamic effects estimated around zero in most specifications. Instead we find support for relative price changes, increasing the cost of energy but leaving the price of other goods and services unaffected. This is consistent with previous findings on the limited aggregate economic costs of carbon taxes. Based on the cross-section of taxes in Europe, we provide suggestive evidence that the response of inflation was especially muted in countries with revenue-neutral carbon taxes and autonomous central banks that can accommodate potential inflationary pressure associated with carbon pricing. Could the European Union mitigate the negative effects of economic, pandemic and environmental crises using only one tool? The answer is positive, by implementing "green" fiscal expansion financed by "green" common debt, such as issuing green bonds. In this paper, we connect the independent responses to different crises into a single response that could end them. The European Union's theoretical background is based on new-classical models, but current research findings doubt new-classical orthodoxy, underling the importance of economic federalism for sustainable economic and green growth. We argue that the Economic and Monetary Union has to speed up fiscal federalism by establishing a powerful European Union common budget using green Eurobonds and implementing fiscal transfers as a mechanism to address the consequences of the triple crisis. Understanding a company's capital structure is essential for optimizing financial resources amid the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. This research examines how the pandemic affected the capital structures of global consumer goods companies across industries, market types, and regions. In this study, a fixed effects model was employed to analyze panel-data regression data spanning from 2018 to 2022, encompassing 1491 companies across 80 countries. The results revealed a significant and positive impact of COVID-19 on capital structure in the initial two years, contrasting with a negative trend in the third year, notably in the short-term debt to total assets ratio. The pandemic's influence on the capital structure varied across sectors, markets, and regions, starting with a consistent positive impact before shifting to a negative and significant effect. The study provides valuable insights for businesses, policymakers, and researchers grappling with the financial implications of external shocks like the pandemic. It underscores the importance of prudent financial decision-making, leveraging the opportunities stemming from a conservative debt approach, and the growing reliance on short-term debt while staying adaptable in response to evolving market dynamics and economic changes. The active spread of COVID-19 and the resulting containment measures have made it clear that both supply and demand and global production networks are facing unprecedented shocks and disruptions. Accordingly, this has resulted in an urgent need to investigate countries' competitive situation (and its changes) during a prolonged period of uncertainty. This study aims to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the revealed comparative advantage (RCA/ Balassa index) of the Baltic states' industries. The Balassa index was calculated for nine industries in three Baltic States (Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia). The RCA index calculations were linked to COVID-19 cases in the countries under consideration by forming a regression equation. RCA index values and their changes were evaluated by analysing data before and after the pandemic, covering the period between 2017 and 2021. This study revealed that the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on each Baltic country's competitiveness in trade with EU countries is significantly higher than in trade with third countries. The results show that Baltic states did not have a comparative advantage in trade with third countries during this time. However, Lithuania and Latvia proved to be more resilient to the consequences of the pandemic, even though industries with a low RCA were more affected. Meanwhile, in trade with EU countries, many of the Baltic states' industries appeared to have a comparative advantage, which began to decline a few years before the pandemic's start. Nevertheless, highly competitive Baltics industries showed remarkable resilience to the impact of the pandemic. However, a short-term decrease in the RCA was observed in individual cases. To reduce the probability of financial crises, policymakers have introduced bank levies, whose application differs across countries. The problem in their use lies in identifying the most effective regulatory instruments to reduce risk. Our study might be of interest to various researchers and professionals, as we discuss the significance of research on bank levies with respect to theory and economic practice and then propose models of banking sector taxation and directions for future research. Moreover, this paper presents the history of taxation of the financial sector, the models introduced in different European countries, the advantages and disadvantages of each of the possible solutions, the results of studies on the impact of the new levy on the behavior of the financial sector and recommendations for how the levy should be structured. This article studies external sovereign bonds as an asset class. We compile a new database of 266,000 monthly prices of foreign-currency government bonds traded in London and New York between 1815 (the Battle of Waterloo) and 2016, covering up to 91 countries. Our main insight is that, as in equity markets, the returns on external sovereign bonds have been sufficiently high to compensate for risk. Real ex post returns average more than 6% annually across two centuries, including default episodes, major wars, and global crises. This represents an excess return of 3%–4% above US or UK government bonds, which is comparable to stocks and outperforms corporate bonds. Central to this finding are the high average coupons offered on external sovereign bonds. The observed returns are hard to reconcile with canonical theoretical models and the degree of credit risk in this market, as measured by historical default and recovery rates. Based on our archive of more than 300 sovereign debt restructurings since 1815, we show that full repudiation is rare; the median creditor loss (haircut) is below 50%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The COVID-19 pandemic has put immense pressure on the fiscal situation. Central revenues have decelerated while expenditures had to be increased to facilitate economic recovery. Local governments faced even harder challenges as intergovernmental transfers were reduced and room for mobilizing alternative finances was limited. This paper employs qualitative and secondary data analysis on local budget and fiscal capacities at the subnational level in Indonesia to find insights into the implications and responses of the provincial government in a decentralized economy during the pandemic. Provinces with a high dependence on intergovernmental transfer are struggling to adopt a countercyclical mitigative fiscal policy. However, provinces with high local own-source revenue have suffered the most during the crisis as low economic activity reduced tax revenues and indirectly lead to lower fiscal space. As fiscal policy is critical to containing the pandemic and facilitating recovery, this paper proposes several strategies toward a more sustainable fiscal policy for rebuilding local government capacity in the medium-to-long term in the aftermath of the crisis. The AGOGHÈ Project aims to produce innovative and entrepreneurial models following the global socioeconomic changes caused by COVID-19. Its objectives include (i) generating awareness, education and social skills through dedicated ethical workstations and workgroups; (ii) developing a novel figure called "Social Trainer" who represents a professional opportunity for young graduates, able to discuss, explain and guide others through the maze of active citizenship rules. The project was developed in the Quartieri Spagnoli of Naples (Italy). The current manuscript reports preliminary data from the local community collected between November and December 2020. Results provide an insight into the neighbourhood, where the lockdown produced an increment in school dropouts and irreparable economic damage. In conclusion, the approach proposed with the AGOGHÈ Project, fully described here, is predicted to be beneficial in increasing social, cultural and economic aspects in the local area and in facilitating a dialogue between people, stakeholders and governments engaging in novel resolutions for post-COVID-19 crises.
