Introduction: Dental Caries is primarily a disease of multifactorial origin. The streptococcus mutans the causative agent adheres to the tooth surface and breaks down the sugar to produce lactic acid as the by product which brings about demineralisation of tooth structure. There is a need to identify substance which prevents adhesion of the organism to the tooth surface thereby preventing colonisation. Aim: To assess conditioning of the tooth surface with butter prior to subjecting the tooth to demineralisation. Materials and Methods: An in vitro experimental trial was conducted on 45 non carious premolars. The teeth were divided in 3 groups of 15 each. Group I received no pretreatment. The group II and III received thin and thick layer of butter coating, respectively. The teeth were then immersed in demineralising solution and the effect of the of the same was assessed using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Since the data obtained was qualitative, any statistical test were not applied. The observations recorded were based on the repetition of the similar findings in more than 50% of the samples. Results: The results of the study indicated the presence of islands of protected enamel and limited destruction in the prismatic pattern on the samples with thin coating of butter. Samples with thick butter coating showed presence of intact prismatic substance in contrast to the unprotected teeth which showed loss of prismatic substance. Conclusion: Pretreatment of the tooth surface with thin coating of butter prior to exposing the tooth to cariogenic environment protects the enamel from undergoing demineralisation.

Background: Alternaria alternata is the primary pathogen of potato leaf spot disease, resulting in significant potato yield losses globally. Endophytic microorganism-based biological control, especially using microorganisms from host plants, has emerged as a promising and eco-friendly approach for managing plant diseases. Therefore, this study aimed to isolate, identify and characterize the endophytic fungi from healthy potato leaves which had great antifungal activity to the potato leaf spot pathogen of A. alternata in vitro and in vivo. Results: An endophytic fungal strain SD1-4 was isolated from healthy potato leaves and was identified as Talaromyces muroii through morphological and sequencing analysis. The strain SD1-4 exhibited potent antifungal activity against the potato leaf spot pathogen A. alternata Lill, with a hyphal inhibition rate of 69.19%. Microscopic and scanning electron microscope observations revealed that the strain SD1-4 grew parallel to, coiled around, shrunk and deformed the mycelia of A. alternata Lill. Additionally, the enzyme activities of chitinase and β-1, 3-glucanase significantly increased in the hyphae of A. alternata Lill when co-cultured with the strain SD1-4, indicating severe impairment of the cell wall function of A. alternata Lill. Furthermore, the mycelial growth and conidial germination of A. alternata Lill were significantly suppressed by the aseptic filtrate of the strain SD1-4, with inhibition rates of 79.00% and 80.67%, respectively. Decrease of leaf spot disease index from 78.36 to 37.03 was also observed in potato plants treated with the strain SD1-4, along with the significantly increased plant growth characters including plant height, root length, fresh weight, dry weight, chlorophyll content and photosynthetic rate of potato seedlings. Conclusion: The endophyte fungus of T. muroii SD1-4 isolated from healthy potato leaves in the present study showed high biocontrol potential against potato leaf spot disease caused by A. alternata via direct parasitism or antifungal metabolites, and had positive roles in promoting potato plant growth. Fungal infection has become a major threat to crop loss and affects food safety. The waste water from agar processing industries extraction has a number of active substances, which could be further transformed by microorganisms to synthesize antifungal active substances. In this study, Bacillus subtilis was used to ferment the waste water from agar processing industries extraction to analyze the antifungal activity of the fermentation broth on Alternaria alternata and Alternaria spp. Results showed that 25% of the fermentation broth was the most effective in inhibited A. alternata and Alternaria spp., with fungal inhibition rates of 99.9% and 96.1%, respectively, and a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was 0.156 μg/mL. Metabolomic analysis showed that flavonoid polyphenols such as coniferyl aldehyde, glycycoumarin, glycitin, and procyanidin A1 may enhance the inhibitory activity against the two pathogenic fungal strains. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis showed that polyphenols involved in the biosynthesis pathways of isoflavonoid and phenylpropanoid were upregulated after fermentation. The laser confocal microscopy analyses and cell conductivity showed that the cytoplasm of fungi treated with fermentation broth was destroyed. This study provides a research basis for the development of new natural antifungal agents and rational use of seaweed agar waste. Background An easy-to-use application to facilitate direct observation and allow for 2-way feedback between residents and faculty is needed. Objective To develop a mobile-based application (app) with the goals of (1) providing just-in-time feedback to residents; (2) improving timeliness of feedback by faculty; and (3) allowing residents to comment on the value of faculty feedback. Methods Fifty-one of 69 (74%) internal medicine (IM) residents and 20 of 25 (80%) IM core faculty participated in the study from July 1, 2020, to December 31, 2021. An iOS app was designed by authors with expertise in medical education and application development to capture entrustable professional activities (EPAs)-based feedback (eg, informed consent) based on direct observation of residents' skills in the workplace. App utilization and narrative feedback characteristics of faculty comments were examined by exporting the data from the database server. The end user satisfaction was examined using a survey instrument. Results Eighty-seven percent of assessments (117 of 134) initiated were fully completed by residents and faculty. Faculty narrative comments were noted in 97% (114 of 117) of completed assessments and 64% (75 of 117) of residents' feedback to the faculty contained narrative comments. Eighty-three percent (97 of 117) of comments were behaviorally specific and 71% (83 of 117) contained an actionable item. Eighty-six percent (18 of 21) of residents and 90% (9 of 10) of core faculty stated that this application promoted an educational interaction between them. Background: Plants have been pivotal in traditional and modern medicine globally, with historical evidence supporting their therapeutic applications. Nigella (Nigella sativa L.) is an annual herbaceous plant of the Ranunculaceae family and is cultivated in the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Western and Central Asia. The medicinal use of plants dates back thousands of years, documented in ancient writings from various civilizations. Alkaloids, phenolics, saponins, flavonoids, terpenoids, anthraquinones, and tannins found in plants exhibit antioxidant, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antibacterial, and antidiabetic activities. Methodology: This study specifically examines the pharmacological potential of Nigella sativa L., emphasizing thymoquinone--a compound with diverse nutraceutical benefits. The extraction, characterization, and quantification of thymoquinone, alongside other physicochemical parameters, were carried out using ethanol through Soxhlet extraction procedures on five nigella varieties. HPLC analysis was performed to determine the maximum accumulation of thymoquinone in the released variety of the plant and the chemical composition of the seed oil isolated from Nigella sativa L., varieties utilized in the study was determined through GC-MS analysis. Results: The research revealed that the Ajmer nigella-20 variety stands out, exhibiting elevated levels of thymoquinone (0.20 ± 0.07%), antioxidants (76.18 ± 1.78%), and substantial quantities of total phenols (31.85 ± 0.97 mg GAEg-1 seed) and flavonoids (8.150 ± 0.360 mg QE 100 g-1 seed) compared to other varieties. The GC-MS profiling showed the presence of 11 major compounds in the studied varieties, with p-cymene, longifolene, and myristic acid identified as the major chemical compounds present in the oil. Conclusion: The observed variations among Nigella varieties indicate the Ajmer nigella-20 variety as particularly promising for thymoquinone and bioactive compound extraction. Introduction: Odontogenic fibroma is a rare benign tumor that is non-infiltrative, usually well-circumscribed and ectomesenchymal in origin. Like most odontogenic tumors, they are often presented as intraosseous/central variant contributing to 0.1% or an extra osseous/peripheral variant contributing to 1.2 - 4.7 % of all odontogenic tumors. They are composed of islands of odontogenic epithelium in the fibrous connective tissue stroma with varying amounts of dentin/cementum-like calcified material. Case Presentation: The present case is of 41-year-old female patient who reported with an asymptomatic swelling in the right upper back tooth region since two months. Management and Prognosis: Clinical diagnosis of pyogenic granuloma was made and the lesion was excised. Histopathological examination of the specimen showed ulcerated epithelium with highly cellular connective tissue stroma. Foci of irregular calcified material were seen along with odontogenic epithelial islands. Immuohistochemistry was performed for CK-14 protein which showed positive reaction. Conclusion: The purpose of presenting this case is to highlight the importance of histopathology of every tissue submitted for arriving at a confirmatory diagnosis in addition to clinical findings. Background: Bacillus, as a plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria, can enhance the resistance of plants to phytopathogens. In our study, Bacillus strains showing excellent biocontrol were screened and used to control ginkgo leaf blight (Alternaria tenuissima)., Results: Four biocontrol Bacillus strains-Bsa537, Bam337, Bso544, and Bsu503-were selected from 286 isolates based on their capacity to inhibit pathogens and promote plant growth. The four Bacillus strains significantly improved the resistance of ginkgo to leaf blight. This was especially the case when the four strains were used as a mixture, which contributed to a decrease in lesion area of >40%. Hence, a mixture of Bacillus strains was used to control ginkgo leaf blight in the field. Treatment efficiency varied from 30% to 100% (average 81.5%) and was higher than that of the control (-2% to -18%, average - 8.5%); the antioxidant capacity of the treated ginkgo was also stronger. In addition, ginkgo biomass increased as a result of treatment with the Bacillus mixture, including leaf weight, area, thickness, number of lateral roots and root weight. Furthermore, the Bacillus mixture improved the ginkgo rhizosphere soil by boosting the number of beneficial microorganisms, lowering the number of pathogens and hastening soil catabolism., Conclusion: The Bacillus mixture improved the health status of ginkgo by protecting it from pathogen attack, promoting its growth and improving the microorganism community in the rhizosphere. This study reports the production of biochar adsorbents from two major crop residues (i.e., rice and wheat straw) to remove naphthenic acids from water. The alkali treatment approach was used for biochar activation that resulted in a tremendous increase in their surface area, i.e., up to 2252 and 2314 m 2 /g, respectively, for rice and wheat straw biochars. Benzoic acid was used as a model compound to optimize critical adsorption parameters. Its maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 459.55 and 357.64 mg/g was achieved for activated rice and wheat straw biochars. The adsorption of benzoic acid was exothermic (∆H° =  - 7.06 and - 3.89 kJ/mol) and identified possibly as physisorption (Gibbs free energy ranges 3.5-4.0 kJ/mol). The kinetic study suggested that adsorption follows pseudo-second-order kinetics with q e 2 for rice straw and wheat straw-derived adsorbents at 200 and 194 mg/g, respectively. As adsorbent, the recyclability of activated biochars was noticed with no significant loss in their efficiency for up to ten successive regeneration cycles. The adsorption results were validated using a commercial naphthenic acid mixture-spiked river water and paper/pulp industrial effluent. The activated rice and wheat straw biochars exhibited excellent adsorption efficiency of 130.3 and 74.6 mg/g, respectively. The naphthenic acid adsorption on biochar surface was due to various interactions, i.e., weak van der Waal's, pore filling, π-π stacking, and ionic interactions. The supercapacitor has drawn more attention because of its enhanced electrochemical properties, including a long life cycle, high specific capacitance, and power density. The supercapacitor has been suggested as a potential energy storage system for high-potential applications. In this work, the nanocomposite fibers of NiCo2O4/polyaniline(PANI)/graphene were prepared by low cost and simple electrospinning method, and prepared materials were studied by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and transmission electron microscope (TEM). SEM and HR-TEM analyses of morphology have shown the clear formation of nanofibers with decreasing diameter and size of the composite NiCo2O4/PANI/graphene. Using galvanostatic charge–discharge, cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques, the supercapacitance behaviour of NiCo2O4/PANI/graphene nanofibers was investigated. The NiCo2O4/PANI/graphene nanofiber achieved the maximum specific capacitance value of 1410 F/g at 1 A/g at 6 M KOH. Arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM) is hallmarked by ventricular fibro‐adipogenic alterations, contributing to cardiac dysfunctions and arrhythmias. Although genetically determined (e.g., PKP2 mutations), ACM phenotypes are highly variable. More data on phenotype modulators, clinical prognosticators, and etiological therapies are awaited. We hypothesized that oxidized low‐density lipoprotein (oxLDL)‐dependent activation of PPARγ, a recognized effector of ACM adipogenesis, contributes to disease pathogenesis. ACM patients showing high plasma concentration of oxLDL display severe clinical phenotypes in terms of fat infiltration, ventricular dysfunction, and major arrhythmic event risk. In ACM patient‐derived cardiac cells, we demonstrated that oxLDLs are major cofactors of adipogenesis. Mechanistically, the increased lipid accumulation is mediated by oxLDL cell internalization through CD36, ultimately resulting in PPARγ upregulation. By boosting oxLDL in a Pkp2 heterozygous knock‐out mice through high‐fat diet feeding, we confirmed in vivo the oxidized lipid dependency of cardiac adipogenesis and right ventricle systolic impairment, which are counteracted by atorvastatin treatment. The modulatory role of oxidized lipids on ACM adipogenesis, demonstrated at cellular, mouse, and patient levels, represents a novel risk stratification tool and a target for ACM pharmacological strategies. Synopsis: ACM mutations are necessary but not sufficient for disease penetrance. The contribution of oxidised lipids as novel pharmacologically targetable cofactors was demonstrated by a multi‐layer approach (patients – in vitro – in vivo), leading to an advancement in the knowledge of ACM pathogenesis. In the coastal region of the Ganges Delta, rice is the predominant crop during the wet/kharif season and most of the land remains fallow during dry/rabi season due to soil salinity and irrigation water scarcity. Sustainable intensification of coastal saline land needs an improved package of practices which conserves soil moisture, facilitates early crop establishment, ensures profitability and has a positive effect on soil health. To achieve these objectives, we evaluated seven treatments for the potato crop in a randomized complete block design with five replications (farms) during the rabi season of 2017–2018 and again in 2018–2019, viz. T1, ridge planting (control); T2, zero tillage planting with 15 cm (9 t ha−1) paddy straw mulching; T3, T2 + foliar spray of nutrients; T4, zero tillage planting with 20 cm (12 t ha−1) paddy straw mulching; T5, T4 + foliar spray of nutrients; T6, zero tillage planting with 25 cm (15 t ha−1) paddy straw mulching; and T7, T6 + foliar spray of nutrients. Tuber yield was higher in T5, T6 and T7 (37.9–41.5 t ha−1) during the second year over other treatments (21.5–32.3 t ha−1). About 200 mm of irrigation water can be saved by zero tillage planting with paddy straw mulching compared with ridge planting. The tuber quality in terms of crude protein, fat, crude fibre and carbohydrate was better under zero tillage planting with paddy straw mulching. The cost of cultivation of potato was reduced by about 27% due to zero tillage planting (US$ 1211.6 ha−1) compared with conventional tillage, intensive ridge planting practice (US$ 1660.4 ha−1). Zero tillage planting with paddy straw mulching resulted in a net return of US$ 1779.2 ha−1, whereas under conventional cultivation, it was US$ 589.6 ha−1. Zero tillage planting of potato with paddy straw mulching reduced soil salinity (ECe) from 5 to 3 dS m−1, conserved soil moisture (4–8%), improved soil bulk density from 1.49 to 1.44 Mg m−3 and increased soil organic carbon from 0.39 to 0.44%. The results of this study suggest that zero tillage potato cultivation in the dry/rabi season can increase cropping intensity in the salt-affected Ganges Delta and increase income of the farmers. SARAS is an ongoing experiment aiming to detect the redshifted global 21-cm signal expected from Cosmic Dawn (CD) and the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). Standard cosmological models predict the signal to be present in the redshift range z ∼ 6–35, corresponding to a frequency range 40–200 MHz, as a spectral distortion of amplitude 20–200 mK in the 3 K cosmic microwave background. Since the signal might span multiple octaves in frequency, and this frequency range is dominated by strong terrestrial Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) and astrophysical foregrounds of Galactic and Extragalactic origin that are several orders of magnitude greater in brightness temperature, design of a radiometer for measurement of this faint signal is a challenging task. It is critical that the instrumental systematics do not result in additive or multiplicative confusing spectral structures in the measured sky spectrum and thus preclude detection of the weak 21-cm signal. Here we present the system design of the SARAS 3 version of the receiver. New features in the evolved design include Dicke switching, double differencing and optical isolation for improved accuracy in calibration and rejection of additive and multiplicative systematics. We derive and present the measurement equations for the SARAS 3 receiver configuration and calibration scheme, and provide results of laboratory tests performed using various precision terminations that qualify the performance of the radiometer receiver for the science goal. Background: Snake venom composition is dictated by various ecological and environmental factors, and can exhibit dramatic variation across geographically disparate populations of the same species. This molecular diversity can undermine the efficacy of snakebite treatments, as antivenoms produced against venom from one population may fail to neutralise others. India is the world's snakebite hotspot, with 58,000 fatalities and 140,000 morbidities occurring annually. Spectacled cobra (Naja naja) and Russell's viper (Daboia russelii) are known to cause the majority of these envenomations, in part due to their near country-wide distributions. However, the impact of differing ecologies and environment on their venom compositions has not been comprehensively studied. Methods: Here, we used a multi-disciplinary approach consisting of venom proteomics, biochemical and pharmacological analyses, and in vivo research to comparatively analyse N. naja venoms across a broad region (>6000 km; seven populations) covering India's six distinct biogeographical zones. Findings: By generating the most comprehensive pan-Indian proteomic and toxicity profiles to date, we unveil considerable differences in the composition, pharmacological effects and potencies of geographically-distinct venoms from this species and, through the use of immunological assays and preclinical experiments, demonstrate alarming repercussions on antivenom therapy. We find that commercially-available antivenom fails to effectively neutralise envenomations by the pan-Indian populations of N. naja, including a complete lack of neutralisation against the desert Naja population. Conclusion: Our findings highlight the significant influence of ecology and environment on snake venom composition and potency, and stress the pressing need to innovate pan-India effective antivenoms to safeguard the lives, limbs and livelihoods of the country's 200,000 annual snakebite victims. Author summary: Annually, India is burdened by the highest number of snake envenomations across the globe, with over 58,000 fatalities and three times the number of morbidities, predominantly affecting the rural agrarian communities. The spectacled cobra (Naja naja) and Russell's viper (Daboia russelii) are responsible for the vast majority of envenomations in the country, in part, due to their near country-wide distributions. In this study, we unveil the astounding differences in venom composition of N. naja from six different biogeographical zones across the country (>6000 km). We provide a comprehensive account of their disparate venom proteomic profiles, biochemical and pharmacological effects, and the associated potencies. Our study uncovers alarming differences in the efficacy of the marketed polyvalent antivenoms in neutralising these venoms, thereby, emphasising the pressing need to develop dose-efficacious and pan-India effective antivenoms for the treatment of snakebites in the country. This study also highlights the significant influence of ecology and diverse environments on the venom variability, insinuating the necessity for innovating cost-effective and pan-India efficacious solutions to safeguard the lives, limbs and livelihoods of India's two hundred thousand annual snakebite victims. Summary This review underlines the importance of the developments in perovskite catalysts for methane combustion from the past up to the present. In this review, after a general and brief introduction to perovskites, the mechanisms of catalytic combustion of methane have been included. Moreover, current studies on perovskites have been summarized including the effects of substitutions, doped perovskites, perovskite preparation methods, and the effect of sulfur presence on perovskite catalysts. Besides, recent studies on perovskite oxides and phenomenon of oxygen (O2) deficiency, porous perovskite oxides, and nanostructured perovskites have been conducted. In addition, partial oxidation of methane (POM) has been reviewed. The loss of active component during the POM reaction can take place in the nickel catalyst, in particular. Since nickel has a lower melting point than noble metals and other active components, such as Co and Fe, in general, to deactivate nickel is easier. Compared with conventional structure, the porous structure with the unique morphology significantly enhances the catalytic activity through a much larger surface area (SA) and greater reactivity of the active sites. Furthermore, the monolithic nanoarrayed perovskite presents very good results in well‐defined faceted catalysts and takes part in porous channel hydrocarbon combustion. This review study is prepared as a guide to cover the profound knowledge of perovskite oxides catalysts, considering the methane combustion reaction mechanisms, and addresses prospective studies in this field for researchers. A combination of sol–gel Pechini method and flame synthesis was used to prepare yttrium aluminate glass microspheres with the garnet composition (YAG, 62.5 mol% aluminium oxide, 37.5 mol% yttrium oxide). Prepared glass microbeads were studied by optical microscopy, SEM, X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and high-temperature (HT) XRD analysis. Formation of YAG as the only crystalline phase was observed during HT XRD experiment in the temperature interval (750–1200 °C), with the onset of YAG phase crystallization in the temperature interval 860–870 °C and most prominent increase in the YAG phase content between 905 and 910 °C. The experimental data obtained by DSC analysis and the Johnson–Mehl–Avrami–Kolmogorov model were used for determination of crystallization behaviour of the studied system. The frequency factor A = 5.2 × 1048 ± 9.6 × 1048 min−1, apparent activation energy Eapp = 1100 ± 10 kJ mol−1 and the Avrami coefficient m = 4 were determined. The linear temperature dependence of nucleation rate, reaction-controlled crystal growth interface and a 3-D crystal growth were confirmed in the studied system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A perovskite group of materials (ABO) has a wide range of applications due to their structural diversity, adaptability including exceptional physical and chemical properties. They can accommodate around 90% of metallic elements of the periodic table at positions A and/or B without destroying the matrix structure. This gives an extraordinary possibility of various combinations and scope of complete or partial substitutions of cations resulting incredible large number of compounds with enhanced properties. These materials have been extensively explored for their magnetic, optical, catalytic and electrical properties. Thermal stability and catalytic properties enable them to serve as promising candidates for the control of environmental pollution. The methods of synthesis greatly influence the catalytic properties of perovskites. They have been exploited as oxidants, reductants and photocatalysts due to their enhanced catalytic properties. In addition to catalytic uses, the role of perovskites has also been explored for sensing and adsorption of various aqueous and gas phase species. This article provides an overview including the techniques for synthesis of perovskite materials, properties favouring the catalytic activities and the environmental applications of perovskites towards remediation of various organic pollutants through adsorption and photocatalytic degradation. The potato processing industry has developed quickly during the past decade in India, and the demand for processing grade potato tubers has increased accordingly. As a consequence, potato market prices have dramatically risen, particularly in the southern states, where production is still limited. The potential for developing the production in these non-traditional areas has been demonstrated. Agronomical and socio-economic constraints need, however, to be better identified and addressed. The International Potato Centre (CIP) and the ICAR-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, have realized a joint survey to analyse the socio-economic factors determining the feasibility and profitability of potato cultivation in the Ananthapuramu and Kurnool districts of Andhra Pradesh State. Respondents established a list of climatic, natural, inputs marketing, technical knowhow and policy support constraints and identified high temperatures, availability and access to irrigation water, price and quality of seeds and costs of inputs as the main potential limiting factors of potato yield. A profitability analysis of potato cultivation under different price and yield scenarios, comparing different crops cultivated by the respondents, indicated that potato was an attractive crop in both districts. A sensitivity analysis, however, revealed a low profitability resilience under the unexpectedly worse productivity conditions in the Kurnool district, where the estimated yield level is already significantly lower than in the Ananthapuramu district due to heat stress. The study consequently recommends introduction of potato in the Ananthapuramu district along with a suggested action plan to address the main production constraints and ensure profitability to the farmers. Oxidative stress-induced methemoglobinemia remained an untouched area in venom pharmacology till date. This study for the first time explored the potential of animal venoms to oxidize hemoglobin to methemoglobin. In in vitro whole-blood assay, methemoglobin forming ability of venoms varied as Naja naja > Ophiophagus hannah > Echis carinatus > Daboia russellii > Apis mellifera > Mesobuthus tamulus > Hippasa partita. Being highly potential, N. naja venom was further studied to observe methemoglobin formation in RBCs and in combinations with PMNs and PBMCs, where maximum effect was observed in RBCs + PMNs combination. Naja naja venom/externally added methemoglobin-induced methemoglobin formation was in parallel with ROS generation in whole blood/ RBCs/ RBCs + PMNs/ RBCs + PBMCs. In in vivo studies, the lethal dose (1 mg/kg body weight, i.p.) of N. naja venom readily induced methemoglobin formation, ROS generation, expression of inflammatory markers, and hypoxia-inducible factor-3 α. Although the mice administered with three effective doses of antivenom recorded zero mortality; the methemoglobin and ROS levels remained high. However, one effective dose of antivenom when administered along with melatonin (1:50; venom/melatonin, w/w), not only offered 100% survival of experimental mice, but also significantly reduced methemoglobin level, and oxidative stress markers including hypoxia-inducible factor-3 α. This study provides strong drive that, complementing melatonin would not only reduce the antivenom load, but for sure greatly increase the success rate of antivenom therapy and drastically minimize the global incidence of snakebite deaths. The hydrolysates of fresh and boiled Venus clams with five different proteases for the production of low-molecular protein hydrolysates were optimised by response surface methodology. Alcalase hydrolysates exhibited the strongest hyaluronidase inhibitory activity. The optimum hydrolysis conditions of fresh and boiled clams were< enzyme-to-substrate ratio (E/S), 2.15%; time, 150 min; water-to-substrate ratio (W/S), 83.84 mL g− 1for fresh clam, and E/S, 2.02%; time, 4.11 h; W/S, 69.74 mL g− 1for boiled clam. The fresh and boiled clam protein hydrolysates were fractionated by S-200 HR size-exclusion chromatography, which resulted in one (FH1) and two (BH1 and BH2) fractions, respectively. BH1 exhibited the highest hyaluronidase and elastase inhibitory activities with specific activities of 141.15 and 81.36% mL mg− 1, respectively. Lanthanide aluminium perovskites LnAP - (Ln = La to Lu) have found application similar to that of yttrium aluminium perovskite (YAP). Among the LnAP we report the successful synthesis of some of the representative members of this family like lanthanum aluminium perovskites LaAlO3 (LAP), samarium aluminium perovskite SmAlO3 (SAP) and gadolinium aluminium perovskite GdAlO3 (GAP). These compounds are very well known in the application of an electric field during fabrication, flash memory devices, optical and catalyst, in microwaves laser, phosphors for white-LED Application, etc. These oxide ceramics were prepared by hydrothermal supercritical fluid technique using the co-precipitated gel as precursor material. The synthesised mono-dispersed polycrystalline materials showed a high degree of crystallinity. The resultant materials were characterized using powder X-ray diffraction for structure and phase identification, scanning electron microscopy with EDAX for elementary analysis. Recent studies have reported the platelet proapoptotic propensity of plant-derived molecules such as, resveratrol, thymoquinone, andrographolide and gossypol. Meanwhile, there were also reports of phytochemicals such as cinnamtannin B1, which shows antiapoptotic effect towards platelets. Platelets are mainly involved in hemostasis, thrombosis and wound healing. However, altered platelet functions can have serious pathological outcomes that include cardiovascular diseases. Platelets are sensitive to external and internal stimuli including therapeutic and dietary components. The anuclear platelets do undergo apoptosis via mitochondrial pathway. However, exaggerated rate of platelet apoptosis could lead to thrombocytopenia and other bleeding disorders. The present study deals with ameliorative efficacy of crocin on sesamol-induced platelet apoptosis. The antiapoptotic property of crocin and the proapoptotic tendency of sesamol in platelets were previously demonstrated. Therefore, it was interesting to see how these two compounds would interact and wield their effects on human platelets. Crocin effectively inhibited sesamol-induced oxidative stress on platelets, which was evidenced by the measurement of endogenously generated reactive oxygen species, particularly hydrogen peroxide, and changes in thiol levels. Further, crocin abrogated sesamol-induced biochemical events of apoptosis in platelets, which include intracellular calcium mobilization, changes in mitochondrial membrane integrity, cytochrome c release, caspase activity and phosphatidylserine externalization. Even though sesamol has proapoptotic effects on platelets, its anti-platelet activity cannot be neglected. Thus, the study proposes that sesamol could be supplemented with crocin, an approach that could not only abolish the toxic effects of sesamol on platelets, but also enhance the quality of treatment due to their synergistic action. In spite of vast advances in healthcare services, treatment of snakebite still remains a challenge to medical fraternity, because of unresolved complications of severe local tissue damage and consequential physical disabilities. Though anti-venom therapy reduces mortality, is ineffective against local tissue damage. In vitro and in vivo studies demonstrated that several alkaloids, flavonoids, polyphenols, terpenoids, saponins, sterols, glycosides, etc., from herbal medicines effectively neutralized local tissue damage induced by venom toxins/enzymes. This review emphasizes the interplay of venom toxins/enzymes in local toxicity and their neutralization using phytochemicals. Thrombocytopenia is a serious issue connected with the pathogenesis of several human diseases including chronic inflammation, arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and other oxidative stress-associated pathologies. The indiscriminate use of antibiotics and other biological drugs are reported to result in thrombocytopenia, which is often neglected during the treatment regime. In addition, augmented oxidative stress induced by drugs and pathological conditions has also been shown to induce thrombocytopenia, which seems to be the most obvious consequence of elevated rate of platelet apoptosis. Thus, blocking oxidative stress-induced platelet apoptosis would be of prime importance in order to negotiate thrombocytopenia and associated human pathologies. The current study presents the synthesis and platelet protective nature of novel ibuprofen derivatives. The potent anti-oxidant ibuprofen derivative 4f was selected for the study and the platelet protective efficacy and platelet aggregation inhibitory property has been demonstrated. The compound 4f dose dependently mitigates the oxidative stress-induced platelet apoptosis in both platelet rich plasma and washed platelets. The platelet protective nature of compound 4f was determined by assessing various apoptotic markers such as ROS generation, cytosolic Ca2+ levels, PS externalization, cytochrome C translocation, Caspase activation, mitochondrial membrane depolarization, cytotoxicity, LDH leakage and tyrosine phosphorylation of cytosolic proteins. Furthermore, compound 4f dose dependently ameliorated agonist induced platelet aggregation. Therefore, compound 4f can be estimated as a potential candidate in the treatment regime of pathological disorders associated with platelet activation and apoptosis. It mentions the perception of potato growers of heat and drought tolerant varieties as potent tool to tackle the impending threat of climate change and global warming. Snake venom toxins affect hemostasis by modulating blood coagulation factors resulting in pro/anti-coagulant status of blood. Most of the reported effects are in vitro which do not reflect in-vivo coagulation status. The specific interference of venom toxins on coagulation factor(s) in vivo can be used as a marker to identify the snake species responsible for envenomation and administration of species-specific anti-venom thereafter. The current review attempts to highlight specific alterations induced by BIG FOUR venomous snakes of India towards blood coagulation factors. Late blight caused by Phytophthora infestans is one of the most dreaded diseases of potato worldwide and cause significant loss in production. The pathogen is highly variable and adapt to the newly bred varieties and fungicides. Population of P. infestans in most of the countries has changed dramatically and original A1 has almost been displaced by more virulent A2 strain. In India, A2 mating type was recorded in 1990s and now it has displaced the A1 in temperate highlands while in sub-tropical plains still A1 is dominating. Virulence to all major resistance genes has been recorded and in India the racial complexity has reached to its zenith resulting in breakdown of many disease resistant varieties. Indiscriminate use of metalaxyl based fungicides has led to the development of metalaxyl resistance world over including India, which has necessitated the use of additional systemic molecules for the management of this disease. The population of P. infestans characterized using molecular markers has led to better understanding of pathogen at molecular level. Mitochondrial DNA haplotyping of P. infestans has revealed that mt Ia is displacing the other haplotypes globally at a faster rate including India. Relationship between P. infestans and the weather is well understood and has been utilized for developing disease forecasting models and decision support systems across the globe including India. An increasing severity of late blight in many potato growing areas, a shift in pathogen population toward increased specific virulence and an increasing tolerance to the most effective late blight specific fungicides suggests a need to develop an appropriate disease management strategy based on information technology. Background and objective: The snakebite mortality rate has been significantly reduced due to effective anti-venin therapy. The intravenously infused anti-venom will neutralize free and target-bound toxins but fails to neutralize venom-induced inflammation and oxidative stress, as the antigen-antibody complex itself is pro-inflammatory. Therefore, an auxiliary therapy is necessary to treat secondary/overlooked envenomation complications. Materials and methods: Blood samples from healthy donors were treated with viper venom (100 μg/ml) for 2 h. The venom-induced inflammation, oxidative damage and effect of crocin pre-treatment were determined by assessing the serum levels of cytoplasmic, lysosomal and oxidative stress markers along with pro-inflammatory mediators such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6 and cyclo-oxygenase (COX)-2. Results: Significantly increased stress markers, cytoplasmic, lysosomal and extracellular matrix-degrading enzymes as well as the pro-inflammatory mediators TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6 and COX-2 indicated increased cellular damage but significantly reduced oxidative damage and inflammation in crocin pre-treated groups. Conclusion: The data clearly suggest that venom-induced oxidative stress and inflammation is also responsible for oxidative burst and cell death in the circulation, which may worsen even after anti-venin therapy. Platelets are the key players in the development of cardiovascular diseases as the microparticles generated by apoptotic platelets and platelet aggregation contribute actively towards the disease propagation. Thus, the aim of this study was to demonstrate the effect of a phytochemical which can prevent these two processes and thereby project it as a cardio-protective compound. Crocin, a natural carotenoid exhibits a wide spectrum of therapeutic potentials through its antioxidant property. The study demonstrated its effects on cytoplasmic apoptotic events of mitochondrial pathway in platelets. Collagen/calcium ionophore-A23187 stimulated platelets were treated with crocin and endogenous generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and hydrogen peroxide (HO) were measured. HO-induced changes in crocin-pretreated platelets such as intracellular calcium, mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨ m), caspase activity, phosphatidylserine exposure and cytochrome c translocation were determined. Crocin dose-dependently ameliorated collagen- and A23187-induced endogenous generation of ROS and HO. It also abolished the HO-induced events of intrinsic pathway of apoptosis. Further, it hindered collagen-induced platelet aggregation and adhesion. The current piece of work clearly suggests its anti-apoptotic effect as well as inhibitory effects on platelet aggregation. Introduction: Considering limited global access to affordable insulin, we evaluated insulin access in public and private health sectors in Bengaluru, India. Methods: Employing modified WHO/HAI methodology, we used mixed-methods analysis to study insulin access and factors influencing insulin supply and demand in Bengaluru in December 2017. We assessed insulin availability, price and affordability in a representative sample of 5 public-sector hospitals, 5 private-sector hospitals and 30 retail pharmacies. We obtained insulin price data from websites of government Jan Aushadhi scheme (JAS) and four online private-sector retail pharmacies. We interviewed wholesalers in April 2018 to understand insulin market dynamics. Results: Mean availability of insulins on India's 2015 Essential Medicine List was 66.7% in the public sector, lower than private-sector retail (76.1%) and hospital pharmacies (93.3%). Among private retailers, mean availability was higher among chain (96.7%) than independent pharmacies (68.3%). Non-Indian companies supplied 67.3% products in both sectors. 79.1% products were manufactured in India, of which 60% were marketed by non-Indian companies. In private retail pharmacies, median consumer prices of human insulin cartridges and pens were 2.5 and 3.6 times, respectively, that of human insulin vials. Analogues depending on delivery device were twice as expensive as human insulin. Human insulin vials were 18.3% less expensive in JAS pharmacies than private retail pharmacies. The lowest paid unskilled worker would pay 1.4 to 9.3 days' wages for a month's supply, depending on insulin type and health sector. Wholesaler interviews suggest that challenges constraining patient insulin access include limited market competition, physicians' preference for non-Indian insulins, and the ongoing transition from human to analogue insulin. Rising popularity of online and chain pharmacies may influence insulin access. Conclusion: Insulin availability in Bengaluru's public sector falls short of WHO's 80% target. Insulin remains unaffordable in both private and public sectors. To improve insulin availability and affordability, government should streamline insulin procurement and supply chains at different levels, mandate biosimilar prescribing, educate physicians to pursue evidence-based prescribing, and empower pharmacists with brand substitution. Patients must be encouraged to shop around for lower prices from subsidized schemes like JAS. * Context.--In women, radical cystectomy includes removal of the bladder, uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, and anterior vaginal wall, yet contiguous extension of urothelial carcinoma to all pelvic organs is rare and routine removal may be unnecessary. Objective.--To study pelvic organ involvement in women at radical cystectomy and investigate oncologic outcomes. Design.--Women with bladder cancer who underwent radical cystectomy at the Mayo Clinic and University of Toronto (1980-2018) were evaluated. Cancer-specific survival (CSS) was estimated with the Kaplan-Meier method; comparisons were made with the log-rank test. Associations with CSS were evaluated with Cox proportional hazard modeling. Results.--A total of 70 women with pT4a and 83 with pT3b cancer were studied. Organs involved were vagina (n = 41 of 70; 58.6%), uterus (n = 26 of 54; 48.1%), cervix (n = 15 of 54; 27.8%), fallopian tubes (n = 10 of 58; 17.2%), and ovaries (n = 7 of 58; 12.1%); 22 of 58 patients (37.9%) had >1 organ involved. Of 70 with pT4a cancer, 64 were available for survival analysis by 3 pelvic organ groups: vaginal only, vaginal and/or cervical/uterine, and vaginal and/or cervical/uterine and/or fallopian tubes/ovarian involvement. Three-year CSS for vaginal involvement only was 39%; it was 14% if cervical/uterine involvement, and Conclusions.--Isolated vaginal involvement should be separated from uterine and/or adnexal extension of urothelial carcinoma at pathologic staging.
