Abstract

Standard analyses of solar collector thermal performance are based upon an energy balance in which the environments adjoining the front and rear of the collector are assumed to be at the same temperature. This assumption is inappropriate for some collector designs, particularly building-integrated collectors. An approach for analyzing such situations is presented based upon a new conceptual temperature termed the 'equivalent ambient temperature.' The concept is explained, the new temperature is defined, and the approach is applied to a typical collector geometry. The approach retains the convenience of the standard analysis while accounting for the unequal front/rear ambient temperatures and permits collector characterization in terms of the conventional parameters: plate efficiency factor, F'; heat removal factor, [F.sub.R] ; overall heat loss coefficient, [U.sub.L], and effective transmittance--absorptance product, [([TAU][alpha]).sub.e]. Abstract

An approach based on a new conceptual temperature termed the 'equivalent ambient temperature' has been introduced for analyzing solar collector thermal performances when the environments to the front and rear of a collector are at different temperatures. Using a specially-designed solar simulator, experimental work is presented which validates the new approach as applied to a wall-integrated covered profiled metal solar air collector. Using both the new and traditional approaches, collector thermal performances are predicted to reveal the practical conditions for which use of the new approach is warranted. The latter findings will be of importance to designers. Performance characteristics for this collector geometry are also presented for use by designers. [DOI: 10.1115/1.1488166]

Abstract

The thermal insulation of clothing is one of the most important parameters used in the thermal comfort model adopted by the International Standards Organization (ISO 1995) and by ASHRAE (2005). To date, thermal insulation values for various types of clothing ensembles from different geographical regions, i.e., Western, Chinese, Korean, etc., have been investigated and suitable values adopted in these standards. However, many other types of clothing, such as those worn in the Arabian Gulf region, have not been investigated to date. Thus, the main objective of the present study is to measure the thermal insulation values (clo) of a number of garments for males in the Arabian Gulf. The clothing ensembles and garments of Arabian Gulf males presented in this study are representative of those typically worn in the region during both summer and winter seasons. Measurements of total thermal insulation values (clo) were obtained using a thermal manikin in accordance with the definition of insulation as given in ISO 9920 (ISO 2006). The clothing area factor (fcl) for Arabian Gulf men's garments and ensembles was determined in this study using a photographic technique and by regression based on the insulation values. In addition, fiber content, descriptions, and weights of Arabian Gulf clothing were recorded and tabulated in this study. The findings of this study are presented as additions to the existing knowledge base regarding clothing insulation and provide, for the first time, data for Arabian Gulf clothing. Abstract

This volume represents the proceedings of the First International Conference on S- tainability in Energy and Buildings, SEB'09, held in the City of Brighton and Hove in the United Kingdom, organised by KES International with the assistance of the World Renewable Energy Congress / Network, and hosted by the University of Brighton. KES International is a knowledge transfer organisation providing high-quality c- ference events and publishing opportunities for researchers. The KES association is a community consisting of several thousand research scientists and engineers who p- ticipate in KES activities. For over a decade KES has been a leader in the area of Knowledge Based and Intelligent information and Engineering Systems. Now KES is starting to make a contribution in the area of Sustainability and Renewable Energy with this first conference specifically on renewable energy and its application to - mestic and other buildings. Sustainability in energy and buildings is a topic of - creasing interest and importance on the world agenda. We therefore hope and intend that this first SEB event may grow and evolve into a conference series. KES International is a member of the World Renewable Energy Congress / N- work which is Chaired by Professor Ali Sayigh. We are grateful to Professor Sayigh for the collaboration and assistance of WREC/N in the organisation of SEB'09. We hope to continue to work with WREC/N in the future on projects of common interest.
