Background: Due to effective treatment of middle ear infections there is a change in etiologies causing lateral sinus thrombosis (LST) and outcome. There is a paucity of literature describing homogenous group of patients with nonseptic LST (NS-LST)., Objective: To describe the clinical profile, risk factors, outcome of patients of NS-LST seen at a single center from South India., Methods and Materials: Prospective, observational study of 100 patients of NS-LST patients, diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) seen at the stroke unit., Results: During 2 years, 100 patients of NS-LST (isolated: combined: 27:73) (male: female: 44:56), mean age: 31.45 ± 11.13 years, were seen. Subacute presentation (74%) with headache, seizures, focal deficits, and features of raised intracranial pressure were presenting features. Hyperhomocysteinemia (61%), anemia (57%), postpartum state (41%), OCP use (37%), and low VitB12 (32%) were commonly seen risk factors. Imaging with MRI compared withcomputerized tomography (CT) had better diagnostic sensitivity (100% vs. 67%), detection of parenchymal (81% vs. 67%)/hemorrhagic (79% vs. 74%) lesions, and cortical vein thrombosis (31% vs. 15.46%). Treatment with anticoagulation and supportive therapy resulted in good outcome (mRS (0-2)) at 3 months in 81%.There were four deaths, all during admission (one - isolated, three - combined) and 11 patients underwent decompressive surgery. Patients with low GCS level of sensoriumat admission, hemiparesis, combined LST, cerebellar involvement, and decompressive craniectomy had a poor outcome., Conclusion: This single-center large cohort study of NS-LST patients brings out the clinical features, risk factors (peculiar to developing countries), and the superiority of MRI in the diagnosis. Abstract The aim of this study was to retrospectively determine the effects of applying different treatment methods to the bony access window on the healing outcomes in lateral sinus floor elevation (SFE). Lateral SFE with implant placement was performed in 131 sinuses of 105 patients. The following three treatment methods were applied to the bony access window: application of a collagen barrier (group CB), repositioning the bone fragment (group RW) and untreated (group UT). Radiographic healing in the window area, augmented bone height changes and marginal bone level changes were examined. Mixed logistic and mixed linear models were analyzed. Over 4.3 ± 1.4 years of follow-up, the implant survival rate was 100% in groups CB and UT, and 96.9% in group RW. The treatment applied to the window did not significantly influence the radiographic healing in the window area, augmented bone height changes or marginal bone level changes (p > 0.05). The healed window areas had generally flat morphologies and were fully corticalized. The mean changes in the augmented bone were less than 1.5 mm in all groups. Marginal bone level changes were minimal. In conclusion, Healing outcomes were not different among three different methods to treat the bony access window in lateral SFE.

An abnormal communication between the extra and intracranial venous structures in the head is called sinus pericranii. The condition usually involves the frontal superior sagittal sinus. Occurrence in the lateral scalp is an uncommon pattern. Its commonest manifestation is scalp swelling, which can be cosmetically unappealing. Radiologic findings play an important role in correctly diagnosing the condition and planning treatment. In this case report, we present the computed tomography findings of a 10-year-old male patient who presented with right scalp swelling. Postcontrast head and neck computerized tomography diagnosed a lateral sinus pericranii with an unusual location in the right scalp that also involves the ipsilateral internal jugular vein. Subsequently, a conservative treatment approach with close clinical follow-up was adopted.

Objectives Materials and Methods Results Conclusions This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the early and late implant failure rates of one‐stage lateral sinus floor elevation (LSFE) and to identify the patient and implant‐related risk factors associated with these failures.All patients treated with one‐stage LSFE from January 2014 to December 2021 were evaluated for inclusion. A total of 618 patients with 936 implants met the inclusion criteria. Clinical and radiographic information about patient and implants was collected. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazards frailty regression models were performed to identify risk factors for early and late implant failure.The cumulative implant survival rate was 95.62% (95% CI 93.90%–97.68%), with 16 early implant failures and 25 late implant failures. The Cox analysis indicated that ≤3 mm residual bone height (RBH) was associated with a higher early failure rate. For late implant failure, smoking habit, ≤3 mm RBH, and certain implant brand were independent risk factors. Narrow sinus ostium, long infundibulum, and flat thickening of Schneiderian membrane might be non‐independent risk factors for late implant failure. No significance was found in other variables, including age, periodontitis history, implant characteristics (position, diameter, length, protrusion length, marginal bone loss), surgeon experience, healing time, opposing dentition, and prosthesis.One‐stage LSFE is a predictable treatment for patients with atrophic maxilla. ≤3 mm RBH increased the risk of early implant failure, while smoking habit, ≤3 mm RBH, and certain implant brand were independent risk factors for late implant failure. Aim: To evaluate the radiographic outcomes of lateral sinus floor elevation with simultaneous implant placement at sites without sinus membrane perforation (SMP) and sites with SMP managed with a resorbable membrane., Materials and Methods: One hundred and thirty-nine patients and 170 implants (56 perforation, 114 non-perforation) were included. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images were taken before surgery (T0), immediately after surgery (T1) and 6 months after surgery (T2). Post-operative augmentation parameters, including endo-sinus bone gain (ESBG) along the implant axis, mean new bone height (NBH) surrounding the implant and augmentation volume (AV), were measured at T1 and T2., Results: At T1, there were no significant differences in ESBG, NBH and AV between the two groups. At T2, although ESBG did not significantly differ between the two groups, NBH (8.50 ± 1.99 mm vs. 9.99 ± 2.52 mm, p = .039) and AV (519.37 ± 258.38 mm 3 vs. 700.99 ± 346.53 mm 3 , p < .001) were significantly lower in the perforation group. Aims: To investigate the clinical and radiographic outcomes of a chemically modified sandblasted large-grit acid-etched implant (hydrophilic) in lateral sinus floor elevation (LSFE), compared with a conventional one (hydrophobic)., Materials and Methods: A retrospective study design was adopted. Patients who received LSFE with simultaneous implant placement were recruited. According to different types of implant surfaces, patients were divided into two groups (the hydrophilic group and the hydrophobic group). Implant survival rate (SR), endo-sinus bone stability on the radiographs, mean probing depths, percentage of bleeding on probing, marginal bone loss, and patient satisfaction were evaluated., Results: A total of 106 patients with 180 implants (hydrophilic:101, hydrophobic:79) in 119 maxillary sinuses were included. The follow-up period ranged from 2 to 5 years. Three hydrophobic implants and one hydrophilic implant in four different patients failed. The SR of the hydrophilic group was higher than that of the hydrophobic group but without a significant difference (p > .05). The change and change rate of endo-sinus bone height (ΔESBH and R ΔESBH ) and bone volume (ΔESBV and R ΔESBV ) in the hydrophilic group were less than those in the hydrophobic group, with a significant difference at 6 months after implantation. No other significant difference was found between the two groups., Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, both hydrophilic and hydrophobic implants were suitable for LSFE with predictable clinical outcomes. Purpose: To investigate the effects of sinus membrane stabilization (via suturing) and dental implant placement on the endo-sinus bone formation in lateral sinus elevations performed without grafting., Materials and Methods: Maxillary sinus elevation surgery using the lateral approach was performed bilaterally on 30 New Zealand white rabbits. The maxillary sinus areas were divided into control and test groups. In the control group, a titanium screw was placed after sinus membrane elevation; in the test group, the sinus membrane was sutured to the lateral walls, and a titanium screw was placed in the center of the alveolar crest. The subjects were sacrificed at 4 and 8 weeks. Then samples were collected, and a microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) analysis was performed. In addition, the volume of newly formed bone, percentage of osseointegration, sinus volume, residual bone height, and implant protrusion length were measured using micro-CT analysis., Results: The sinus volume, volume of newly formed bone, and percentage of osseointegration in the test group were significantly higher than in the control group at 4 weeks (P &#61; .01, P &#61; .04, P &#61; .02, respectively). While the volume of newly formed bone was 17.1 ± 3.08 mm3 in the control group, it was 26.9 ± 14.26 mm3 in the test group at 4 weeks. The volume of newly formed bone significantly decreased from 26.9 ± 14.26 mm3 to 17 ± 3.66 mm3 at 8 weeks (P &#61; .02). No significant difference in residual bone height was found at 4 and 8 weeks (P &#61; .07). No significant difference in implant protrusion length was found between the control and test groups (P &#61; .18). Protrusion length and new bone formation in the sinus showed a negative relationship (P &#61; .01)., Conclusions: Suturing the sinus membrane to the lateral sinus wall is an effective approach for increasing osseointegration, bone volume, and sinus volume in the short term. A slow-absorbing suture material can be used to maintain sinus and bone volumes in the long term.

Purpose: To assess histologic and imaging outcomes related to new bone formation around implants, inserted simultaneously with sinus augmentation, and compare different types of grafts., Materials and Methods: This systematic review (SR) was carried out following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) and the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions. LILACS/BVS, MEDLINE/PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Embase databases, including gray literature and manual investigations, were searched to identify clinical trials reporting specific requirements. The present study needed human histologic and imaging data of bone formation around implants inserted into the maxillary sinus simultaneously with elevation and augmentation procedures. Study selection, risk of bias (Rob 2.0 or ROBINS-I), quality of evidence (GRADE), and data collection were performed by two independent reviewers., Results: Of the 1,101 potentially eligible articles, 44 were retrieved, 12 were assessed for eligibility, and 5 were included (4 randomized and 1 controlled clinical trial). As a result, 130 grafted sinuses with 179 placed implants in 103 patients were analyzed. The patients were aged between 24 and 79 years and followed up between 6 and 15 months. The heterogeneity between studies did not allow the data to be combined for meta-analysis. All graft materials proved to be viable options for the intervention. The use of biphasic calcium phosphate was related to higher bone-to-implant contact., Conclusions: All of the assessed grafts are viable options for the addressed intervention. The use of some material is justified to maintain the sinus volume and allow bone formation in the apical implant site under the sinus membrane. Longer chair time and donor site morbidity should be considered when choosing autogenous bone. Synthetic biphasic materials can be selected for this intervention due to superior bone-to-implant contact compared to deproteinized bovine bone.

Introduction: Lateral sinus thrombosis (LST), a life-threatening complication of otitis media.The tender and edematous swelling or abscess at the area of exit of the emissary vein behind the mastoid process known as Griesinger’s sign is a pathognomonic sign for lateral sinus thrombosis. The subperiosteal abscess as a feature of Griesinger's sign may be a very rare presentation. Case Presentation: We report a case of 14 -year- old female presented with right sided cholesteatoma with lateral sinus thrombosis with meningitis with Griesinger's sign. Contrast-enhanced T1-weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) shows thrombosis of right lateral sinus, abscess in the postauricular region at the exit of mastoid emissary vein, and patent mastoid emissary vein connecting the lateral sinus and abscess. Discussion: Griesinger’s sign usually results from reflex thrombosis of the mastoid emissary vein in lateral sinus thrombosis. It may rarely manifest with direct venous spread of infection with subperiosteal abscess in the post-auricular region. Contrast-enhanced MRI can help differentiate the edematous swelling or abscess presentation of Griesinger’s sign in lateral sinus thrombosis and its possible pathogenesis.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the long-term changes of sinus lift material. Materials and methods: We included a total number of 35 patients (20 men and 15 women), between 32 and 80 years old, evaluated on a timeframe of up to 11.6 years. Diverse biomaterials were used (allograft, xenograft, alloplastic, combinations of them), with autologous bone in some cases. Results: The appearance of the top plane of the bone over time took a large dome shape (36% of cases), a linear shape (32% of cases), an irregular shape (23% of cases), or had micro domes above the implants (7%). No significant differences were found between the groups regarding age. The radiological density of the biomaterial tended to equalize that of the native bone. The final vertical dimensions seemed to be independent of the initial native bone height but seemed to be correlated with the amount of applied biomaterial. For the study group, the biomaterial contracted on average by 10% for the maximum height (H max) and 20% for the minimum height (H min), which can explain the tendency of the upper border of the biomaterial to curve. The annual H max contraction ranged from −0.09 to +0.18 with a mean value of 2.67% (SD = 0.04, CI: [0.011, 0.041]). The median value was 1.8%. The annual H min contraction ranged from −0.24 to +0.24, with a mean value of 4.33% (SD = 0.07, CI: [0.021, 0.065]). The median value was 3.59%. There were no statistically significant gender differences (Mann–Whitney U, p = 0.483, p = 0.642). The additional application of biomaterial together with the implants seemed to have a beneficial effect on the final vertical dimension of the bio-transformed material.

The following is a case report of an adolescent with mental retardation who had congenital aural atresia with contralateral congenital facial palsy. She developed multiple intracranial complications (cerebellar abscess and lateral sinus thrombosis) due to cholesteatoma. We managed her in a multidisciplinary approach. Background: Otogenic lateral sinus thrombosis (OLST) is a rare complication of otitis media. We do not know whether the disease progress between the pediatric and adult OLST patients is consistent. However, pediatric surgical methods always refer to the adults'., Aims/objectives: This study aimed to seek evidence for suitable surgical methods in pediatric patients., Materials and Methods: The clinical manifestation, laboratory findings, and findings in operation between children and adult groups were compared., Results: Ten children and 17 adults OLST patients were included. Most pediatric patients had no history of chronic otitis media or cholesteatoma ( p <.001). The ratios of otorrhea, tympanic perforation and sclerotic type mastoid in CT scan were significantly lower in the children group ( p <.05). The mean air conduction hearing threshold in the children and adolescent group (31.25 ± 21.27 dB) was significantly lower than that of the adult group (77.6 ± 23.66 dB) ( p <.001). The diseases in attics (66.7%) and the ossicular chain destruction (33.3%) were not as severe as those in the adult group ( p <.05). The eustachian tube closure was found similar in two groups., Conclusions and Significance: Conservative surgery is recommended to pediatric OLST to obliterate the diseases and improve middle ear and mastoid drainage, preserving hearing function.

Background: We reviewed the literature to examine if the thickness of the sinus membrane is a risk factor for perforation during lateral sinus lift surgery., Material and Methods: We searched Embase, PubMed, and Web of Science databases till 4th December 2023 for studies examining the risk of perforation with different sinus membrane thicknesses. Studies reporting sinus membrane thickness in perforation and non-perforation cases were also included., Results: Eleven studies were eligible. All studies used cone beam computed tomography for measuring sinus membrane thickness. Meta-analysis showed that sinus membrane thickness was significantly lower in perforation cases as compared to non-perforation cases (MD: -0.91 95% CI: -1.48, -0.33 I2=94%). Four studies used 2mm as the cut-off to define thick and thin sinus membranes. Pooled analysis failed to demonstrate any significant difference in perforation rates (OR: 0.97 95% CI: 0.44, 2.17 I2=56%). Meta-analysis of studies using 1.5mm (OR: 0.66 95% CI: 0.29, 1.48 I2=72%) and 1mm cut-off (OR: 0.93 95% CI: 0.34, 2.56) also demonstrated similar non-significant results., Conclusions: Our study shows that the sinus membrane is significantly thinner in cases with perforations as compared to those with no perforations. However, a meta-analysis based on different membrane thickness cut-offs failed to demonstrate a relationship between thinner sinus membranes and a higher risk of perforation. There is a need for further studies examining the role of sinus membrane thickness on perforation rates.

The objective of this study was to perform a comparative evaluation of the radiographic outcomes of lateral sinus floor elevation with and without bone window repositioning (BLSFE and LSFE, respectively) when applied concomitantly with implant placement. A randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted between February 1, 2016 and May 1, 2017 including 26 individuals with at least one missing tooth. Participants were randomized 1:1 to undergo BLSFE (10 participants, 16 implants) or LSFE (13 participants, 19 implants). Bovine-derived xenograft was used in both groups and the implants were inserted concomitantly. In the BLSFE group, the antrostomy was covered with a repositioned bone window and then with a concentrated growth factors (CGF) membrane. In the LSFE group, the antrostomy was covered with a CGF membrane. Panoramic radiographs were taken before surgery (T0), immediately postoperative (T1), and at 12 months postoperative (6 months after loading) (T2). Marginal bone loss (MBL), apical bone gain, augmented alveolar bone height, and intra-sinus bone augmentation were evaluated on panoramic radiographs at T2. A linear regression analysis with generalized estimating equation models was performed. The implant survival rate was 100% at 1 year after implant surgery. The residual alveolar bone height at T0 was comparable in the BLSFE and LSFE groups (3.58 ± 1.49 mm vs 4.12 ± 1.61, P = 0.32), as was the alveolar bone height at T1 (13.61 ± 1.82 mm vs 12.38 ± 1.82 mm, P = 0.06). At T2 , significantly higher alveolar bone height, intra-sinus bone augmentation, and apical bone gain, and lower distal MBL were observed in the BLSFE group when compared to the LSFE group, with adjusting for covariates (β = 2.44, 95% CI 1.42–3.46, P < 0.0001; β = 2.38, 95% CI 1.35–3.41, P < 0.0001; β = 2.33, 95% CI 1.23–3.42, P < 0.0001; and β = −0.43, 95% CI −0.83 to −0.02, P = 0.038, respectively). No significant difference was observed for mesial MBL or apical bone resorption at T2. Lateral sinus floor elevation with bone window repositioning may result in higher bone augmentation after 1 year than the traditional approach. Lateral sinus thrombosis(LST) is a known but rare complication of chronic otitis media and mastoiditis in the antibiotic era. The classic symptoms of picket fence fever and other unspecific symptoms could be masked by the usage of the antibiotics contributed to the late presentation and delay in treatment. Thus, clinicians should be vigilant and detect this complication early to prevent mortality and morbidity. Administration of broad‑spectrum antibiotics and surgical mastoidectomy to eradicate the perisinus infection are the main treatment modalities. Maxillary sinus augmentation (MSA) and guided bone regeneration (GBR) have shown successful clinical, radiological, and histological outcomes for implant-related bone reconstruction and have been used to augment bony defects of various shapes and sizes. This study demonstrated that the lateral sinus bony window obtained during MSA can be used as an autogenous block bone graft for the augmentation of wide post-extraction defects. During the uncovering procedure performed 6 months after surgery, the grafted lateral bony window was well integrated with the adjacent native bone, and complete bone filling was observed in all bony defects around the implants. All of the implants survived. Within the limitations of this study, autogenous block bone obtained from lateral window sites can be used as novel donors for the resolution of wide bony defects around implants.

Introduction: Maxillary sinus floor augmentation is a procedure known for its long-term success and predictable outcomes. However, the perforation of the Schneiderian membrane remains the most common complication associated with this procedure., Objective: This systematic review aims to determine the presence of complications during maxillary sinus floor augmentation procedures using CAD-CAM surgical templates., Material and Methods: An electronic search was carried out in MEDLINE (via PubMed), Web of Science, and Scopus. A descriptive analysis of the data was performed. Studies that have performed lateral sinus floor augmentation were included in the inclusion criteria. The CAD-CAM surgical template design and the intraoperative complications were registered., Results: A total of 13 studies were included. Seven were case reports, four were case series, and two were randomized clinical trials. A total of 94 lateral SFA procedures were included (84 using CADCAM templates and 10 without using templates). Three of the 84 maxillary sinus floor augmentation procedures using a CAD-CAM template presented intraoperative complications., Conclusions: Maxillary sinus floor augmentation performed by using CAD-CAM surgical templates could be related to low rates of complications, however, due to the heterogeneity of the articles included, more standardized studies are needed to confirm these outcomes.

Purpose: To investigate the effect of lateral sinus floor elevation (LSFE) on sinus membrane (SM) thickness and sinus health in mucosa thickness less and more than 5 mm., Materials and Methods: LSFE was performed in a prospective controlled clinical trial on two groups with less than and more than 5 mm (group A & B) SM thickness and followed for 6 months. Using preoperative and 6-month postoperative CBCT and clinical evaluation, SM thickness changes (primary outcome variable), sinus health, augmented bone height, and length (augmentation adequacy), membrane-related variables, and operation time were measured., Results: Forty unilateral sinus augmentations (A:20, B:20) with simultaneous installation of 52 fixtures were performed on 40 subjects (72.5% males, mean age of 48.8±7.6). The mean preoperative and 6- month SM thicknesses in group A and group B were 1.4±0.9 and 1.3±0.6 mm, and 6.8±1.0 and 3.4±1.7 mm, respectively. The mean postoperative SM thickness significantly decreased (P<0.001) only in group B. The mean SM thickness changes also revealed a noticeable difference between the two groups (P<0.001). Augmentation adequacy and membrane perforation rate were similar in both groups. Clinical and radiographic rhinosinusitis was not detected in any of the patients. Bleeding during separation and resistance to elevation in group B were significantly higher than in group A (P&#61;0.003, P&#61;0.001). Surgical time in group B (12.08 ± 8.26 minutes) was longer than in group A (8.64 ± 3.70 minutes), without reaching a significant level (P&#61;0.097)., Conclusions: LSFE in thickened mucosa (≤10 mm) and thinner mucosa (≤5 mm) does not cause abnormal changes in the sinus membrane and sinus health. LSFE in thickened mucosa results in adequate sinus augmentation. Thickened SM also shows a significant thickness reduction. The thickened membrane does not appear to be a contraindication to SFE.

Objective: Endovascular mechanical thrombectomy for the treatment of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis is not always successful. We present our experience of using self-expanding stents to facilitate effective recanalization of persistent lateral sinus thrombosis refractory to endovascular mechanical thrombectomy., Methods: Data from patients who underwent endovascular mechanical thrombectomy for the treatment of acute symptomatic cerebral venous sinus thrombosis between August 2015 and July 2018 were evaluated. Patient demographics, procedural techniques, devices used and follow-up outcomes were assessed., Results: A total of 14 patients underwent endovascular mechanical thrombectomy during the study period. Of these, stenting of the occluded sinus was performed in five patients with extensive sinus thrombosis after conventional endovascular mechanical thrombectomy. Three of the five patients had a variable degree of venous infarction and/or hemorrhage before treatment. The target lesion was located in the right lateral sinus in all five patients. Due to the length of the involved sinus, two stents were required in one patient and three stents in two patients. The only procedure-related complication was an asymptomatic tearing of the sinus wall in one patient. Stent patency could not be maintained in two patients due to stent buckling within the jugular foramen segment and an inability to maintain antiplatelet medication. Modified Rankin Scale scores at 2-16 months were zero in two patients, one in two patients, and five in one patient., Conclusions: Stenting for the thrombotic occlusion of the lateral sinus is a feasible rescue method to overcome unsuccessful endovascular mechanical thrombectomy. However, currently available stenting systems may be unsuitable for use in the intracranial dural sinus system.

Objectives: To retrospectively evaluate whether implants placed simultaneously with lateral sinus floor elevation (LSFE) in severely atrophic maxilla (residual bone height [RBH] ≤3 mm) could achieve long-term survival and comprehensively analyze the factors influencing their survival rates., Materials and Methods: A total of 123 patients receiving LSFE and simultaneous implant placement from 2010 to 2019 and their 123 implants in sites with RBH ≤3 mm were included in this study. Basic characteristics of patients and implants were collected from the medical record system and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. Kaplan-Meier survival curves were applied to estimate cumulative survival rates (CSRs) and Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to detect factors influencing implant survival., Results: The 6-year and 12-year CSR of implants placed in sites with RBH ≤3 mm were 95.7% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 92.1%-99.5%) and 76.6% (95% CI: 58.1%-100%), respectively. Eight patients presented late implant failure. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses demonstrated that RBH ≤2 mm (hazard ratio [HR]: 20.63, p = 0.000) and smoking habit (HR: 6.055, p = 0.024) were significantly associated with long-term implant survival. Specifically, the 10-year CSR of implants in sites with RBH ≤2 mm (53.3%, 95% CI: 27.5%-100%) was dramatically lower than those in sites with RBH >2 mm (92.9%, 95% CI: 81.7%-100%, p = 0.000)., Conclusions: Implants placed simultaneously with LSFE in sites with RBH ≤3 mm can achieve long-term survival. However, caution is required especially for implantation in sites with RBH ≤2 mm. Objectives: We aimed to retrospectively evaluate the long‐term clinical outcomes of lateral sinus floor elevation (LSFE) in patients with sinus floor defects. Materials and Methods: Between 2008 and 2020, patients with sinus floor defects were recruited after confirmation on preoperative cone‐beam computed tomography (CBCT). The split‐thickness flap technique with a palatal crestal incision was used to manage tissue adhesion in the bone defects area. A resorbable collagen membrane was used to close the sinus floor defects from the crestal side before bone substitute placement. Of 58 implants, 47 (81.0%) were placed after an 8‐month healing period, whereas 11 were placed simultaneously. Patients were followed up by radiography and clinical examination for 1–9 years. Finally, the cumulative survival rate (CSR) of implants, surgical complications, and marginal bone loss (MBL) were recorded and analyzed. Results: In total, LSFE was performed in 36 sinuses (35 patients) with sinus floor defects, of which surgery was completed in 35 sinuses (97.2%) in the first attempt. Schneiderian membrane perforations (SMP) occurred in 10/36 (27.8%) sinuses; nine were repaired carefully, whereas one surgery was suspended due to complicated SMP, and successful re‐entry LSFE was performed 4 months later. After a follow‐up period of 1–9 years, the CSR was 96.5% at the 1‐year, 3‐year, 5‐year, and 7‐year follow‐ups and 64.3% at the 8‐year follow‐up. Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, sinus floor defects seem not to compromise LSFE therapy after appropriate management and long‐term clinical outcomes are predictable. The aim of this study is to evaluate the long-term changes of sinus lift material. Materials and methods: We included a total number of 35 patients (20 men and 15 women), between 32 and 80 years old, evaluated on a timeframe of up to 11.6 years. Diverse biomaterials were used (allograft, xenograft, alloplastic, combinations of them), with autologous bone in some cases. Results: The appearance of the top plane of the bone over time took a large dome shape (36% of cases), a linear shape (32% of cases), an irregular shape (23% of cases), or had micro domes above the implants (7%). No significant differences were found between the groups regarding age. The radiological density of the biomaterial tended to equalize that of the native bone. The final vertical dimensions seemed to be independent of the initial native bone height but seemed to be correlated with the amount of applied biomaterial. For the study group, the biomaterial contracted on average by 10% for the maximum height (H max) and 20% for the minimum height (H min), which can explain the tendency of the upper border of the biomaterial to curve. The annual H max contraction ranged from -0.09 to +0.18 with a mean value of 2.67% (SD = 0.04, CI: [0.011, 0.041]). The median value was 1.8%. The annual H min contraction ranged from -0.24 to +0.24, with a mean value of 4.33% (SD = 0.07, CI: [0.021, 0.065]). The median value was 3.59%. There were no statistically significant gender differences (Mann-Whitney U, p = 0.483, p = 0.642). The additional application of biomaterial together with the implants seemed to have a beneficial effect on the final vertical dimension of the bio-transformed material.
