Electrical Engineering and Systems Science - Systems and Control - Abstract
This paper proposes a novel control architecture for state and input constrained Euler-Lagrange (E-L) systems with parametric uncertainties. A simple saturated controller is strategically coupled with a Barrier Lyapunov Function (BLF) based controller to ensure state and input constraint satisfaction. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first result for E-L systems that guarantee asymptotic tracking with user-specified state and input constraints. The proposed controller also ensures that all the closed-loop signals remain bounded. The efficacy of the proposed controller in terms of constraint satisfaction and tracking performance is verified using simulation on a robot manipulator system., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2206.13084

Mathematics - Numerical Analysis - Abstract
A new formulation of the particle filter for nonlinear filtering is presented, based on concepts from optimal control, and from the mean-field game theory. The optimal control is chosen so that the posterior distribution of a particle matches as closely as possible the posterior distribution of the true state given the observations. This is achieved by introducing a cost function, defined by the Kullback-Leibler (K-L) divergence between the actual posterior, and the posterior of any particle. The optimal control input is characterized by a certain Euler-Lagrange (E-L) equation, and is shown to admit an innovation error-based feedback structure. For diffusions with continuous observations, the value of the optimal control solution is ideal. The two posteriors match exactly, provided they are initialized with identical priors. The feedback particle filter is defined by a family of stochastic systems, each evolving under this optimal control law. A numerical algorithm is introduced and implemented in two general examples, and a neuroscience application involving coupled oscillators. Some preliminary numerical comparisons between the feed- back particle filter and the bootstrap particle filter are described.

- Abstract

- Abstract
The electricity sector, especially in emerging countries, has experienced several transformations, mainly resulting from the increase of electricity demand. This encourages more investment in the generation sector and causes increasing concerns with the development and improvement of tools for static voltage stability analysis of electrical power systems. In this paper the results of the use of the nonlinear predictor for the tracing of the P-V curves are presented. The predictor is based on Vandermonde interpolating polynomial of second degree allowing to reconstruct a function passing through three known points on the P-V curve. The main benefit of using this predictor occurs in the most heavily loaded part of the P-V curve, i.e., near the maximum loading point. In this region, the nonlinear predictor resembles the curve of solutions trajectory and provides a smaller number of iterations and CPU time in the corrector step compared to some linear predictors. In the corrector step, the magnitude of the nodal voltage is used as a continuation parameter. The tests are performed for a two bus system, IEEE-14 bus system and real large systems, 787 buses, corresponding to parts of South–Southeast Brazilian system. Comparisons are presented, in terms of numbers of iterations and robustness, between the methods that use linear predictors and the nonlinear predictor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The 1878 marriage of Rose Anna Shedlock and Émile Roux was a closely guarded secret. Shedlock studied medicine at Edinburgh with Sophia Jex-Blake (1840–1912) and her fellow students but is not mentioned by name in the usual accounts of their battle for recognition by the University. Subsequently Shedlock attended the Paris medical school where she probably met Emile Roux who was attached to the military medical school of the Val-de-Grâce before his dismissal in 1876. Documentation of this episode and of Roux’s life over the next two years is fragmentary and inaccurate. Sadly, Shedlock died, probably of tuberculosis, in 1879. In a romanticized and highly inaccurate biography Roux’s niece suggested that Rose Anna contracted tuberculosis from Roux whose life was later blighted by the disease. However, Shedlock was unwell for some years before they married and it seems far more likely that she passed the disease on to him. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
In many areas of knowledge, situations in which we have to model and solve optimization problems are recurrent. Among the mathematical theories that support the solution of such problems, convex optimization unveiled to be an important tool. This is mainly due to the existence of algorithms whose computational solution has matured a lot in terms of speed of solution and reliability during the past few years. In this context, it deserves attention the CVX, a system for modeling and solving convex optimization problems. CVX uses the disciplined convex programming concept, which is a set of conventions or rules that permits the verification of convexity and automatic conversion of the problem instance into forms directly handled by the embedded solvers. This tutorial presents CVX in a didactic manner whose objective is to facilitate the learning about using the tool along with disciplined convex programming. Besides a number of examples, the tutorial also provides some applications, their corresponding CVX codes, the numerical solutions and discussions. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

29. Quantization Noise on Image Reconstruction Using Model-Based Compressive Sensing.

- Abstract
The Compressive Sensing (CS) allows the acquisition of signals already compressed and the posterior reconstruction with much less number of measures than the minimum required by the Nyquist theorem. A subarea of CS which improves the performance at the reconstruction stage is named Model-Based CS. Some works have been developed within this subarea. However, most of them consider only the noise generated by sparse approximation, disregarding the noise generated by the quantization stage and its influence on efficiency and robustness of CS. The objective of this study is to investigate the influence of the noise generated by the quantization stage in Model-Based CS efficiency for images with different levels of sparsity and different distributions of coefficients in the frequency domain. In this work, the image acquisition stage is implemented using the partial Fourier matrix which results in a vector of measures. Then, different steps of uniform scalar quantization are added to this vector and the image reconstruction stage is performed using the Compressive Sampling Matching Pursuit (CoSaMP) on a quadtree model. PSNR and bits rate (BR) are then used to evaluate the efficiency of CoSaMP with quantization noise. The performance of this proposed Model-Based CS using different quantization steps were slightly better than other studies using the same model in terms of PSNR, but with the advantage of obtaining smaller values of bit rate (BR maior que 2 bpp). The diagnosis of autoimmune Myasthenia Gravis (MG) remains clinical and rests on the history and physical findings of fatigable, fluctuating muscle weakness in a specific distribution. Ancillary bedside tests and laboratory methods help confirm the synaptic disorder, define its type and severity, classify MG according to the causative antibodies, and assess the effect of treatment objectively. We present an update on the tests used in the diagnosis and follow-up of MG and the suggested approach for their application. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Matrizes explicitas ,Elasticidade ,Alta ordem ,Engenharia Civil ,Elementos finitos ,Estatística - Abstract
This work presents the development of explicit finite element matrices for higher order triangular and tetrahedral elements applied to solution of 2D and 3D elasticity problems. The accuracy of analysis results using the Finite Element Method (FEM) depends on mesh refinement and element quality. The most usual refinement techniques are the adaptive versions h, p, hp and r, in which the h version keeps the order of interpolation functions constant and raises the number of elements to minimize the error. Alternatively, the p version maintains the number of elements constant and raises the order of the polynomial in the interpolation functions for a better approximation of the solution. The hp version is a combination of the two previous approaches and the r version is obtained by modifying node position while maintaining the mesh topology. Triangular and tetrahedral elements were adopted for the present study, since they have the advantage of adapting to the most diverse geometric forms. Lagrange polynomial order is incremented to construct triangular elements T6 (6 nodes), T10 (10 nodes), T15 (15 nodes) and T21 (21 nodes), and tetrahedral elements TE10 (10 nodes), TE20 (20 nodes) and TE35 (35 nodes). Higher order elements provide greater accuracy as the order of the polynomial increases. Therefore, fewer elements are required to solve the problem when compared to the h version, thus reducing the need for additional mesh refinement. Applications using higher order finite elements often require great computational cost, since element matrices are obtained with a large set of numerical integration points, thus increasing the processing time. To solve this problem explicit stiffness matrices have been developed, avoiding numerical integrations and maximizing computational efficiency. Practical applications in a computational code for static and modal analysis of structures were developed using MATLAB software, with the user defining an initial mesh with triangular elements of three nodes (T3) or tetrahedral element of four nodes (TE4), and further establishing the polynomial order to be applied. The computer code is responsible for generating additional nodes and connectivities according to the chosen degree of the interpolation function. Next, the user defines the physical properties, boundary conditions and applied loads, for later calculation of the displacements, stresses, frequencies and vibration modes. Test cases are presented for validation of the proposed routines. Major conclusions reveal that for a broad set of elements the strategy using explicit finite element matrices was more efficient than the classical numerical integration procedure, with a considerable reduction in processing time.

FACIOSCAPULOHUMERAL muscular dystrophy ,DUCHENNE muscular dystrophy ,MUSCULAR dystrophy ,LASER ablation ,CELL membranes - Abstract
Deficits in plasma membrane repair have been identified in dysferlinopathy and Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, and contribute to progressive myopathy. Although Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy (FSHD) shares clinicopathological features with these muscular dystrophies, it is unknown if FSHD is characterized by plasma membrane repair deficits. Therefore, we exposed immortalized human FSHD myoblasts, immortalized myoblasts from unaffected siblings, and myofibers from a murine model of FSHD (FLExDUX4) to focal, pulsed laser ablation of the sarcolemma. Repair kinetics and success were determined from the accumulation of intracellular FM1-43 dye post-injury. We subsequently treated FSHD myoblasts with a DUX4-targeting antisense oligonucleotide (AON) to reduce DUX4 expression, and with the antioxidant Trolox to determine the role of DUX4 expression and oxidative stress in membrane repair. Compared to unaffected myoblasts, FSHD myoblasts demonstrate poor repair and a greater percentage of cells that failed to repair, which was mitigated by AON and Trolox treatments. Similar repair deficits were identified in FLExDUX4 myofibers. This is the first study to identify plasma membrane repair deficits in myoblasts from individuals with FSHD, and in myofibers from a murine model of FSHD. Our results suggest that DUX4 expression and oxidative stress may be important targets for future membrane-repair therapies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Physics - Abstract
Three applications of scalar fields to homogeneous and isotropic cosmologies are presented, with distinct motivations and resuIts. In the first case, a Lagrange multiplier technique is used in order to set physical constraints on the curvature invariants possibly present in the low energy effective action of string theory. In a particular case, a nonsingular model is obtained, suggesting a possible correction in the gra- vity action which is compatible to the symmetries of string cosmology. In another approach, a nonsingular model based on the decay of the cosmological term is pro- posed. The model has as a major feature a smooth transition between an inflationary de Sitter phase and a phase with FRW-type dynamics. As a last example, a scalar field thermally coupled to the cosmic fluid is considered. By adop- ting a specific but usual dissipative term, it is defined a parameter space encompassing the most common scalar field cosmologies, as well as the standard model, as limiting cases. Slow roll conditions are obtained and it is presented a simple toy model to illustrate the heuristic potential of the proposed parameters.

- Abstract
The hybrid control concept is applied to the offoading operation by means of a Floating, Production, Working, Storage and Offoading (FPWSO) vessel and a Shuttle Tanker (ST). Both vessels are able to maintain their position and heading as a result of the Dynamic Positioning System (DPS). The vessels are in tandem configuration connected by a hawser. The offloading operation lasts approximately 24 hours. During this period, the sea condition may change and the drafts are being constantly altered. Hybrid controller is designed to permit modification of the controller/observer parameters should a significant sea state alteration and/or draft variation occur. The main goal of the controllers is to maintain relative positioning between vessels in order to avoid dangerous proximity or excessive hawser tension. With that in mind, a new control strategy is proposed based on dierential geometry that acts integrally in both vessels. Nonlinear observers based on passivity are used to estimate position, velocity and external force ranging from calm to extreme seas. The criterion for changing the controller/observer law is based on draft and sea state. The draft is assumed to be known and sea state is estimated by tracking the peak-frequency of the first-order vessel motion spectrum. A perturbation-based model is proposed to find the number of hybrid system controllers. The equivalence between the geometric control approach and the Lagrange Multiplier (LM) - based control is demonstrated. Taking some assumptions as given, the equivalence between geometric and PD-like controllers is regarded as having also been demonstrated. The performance of the new strategy is assessed by means of numerical simulations and compared to a Proportional-Derivative (PD)-like control. The results present a very good performance as regards the proposed main goal. Result comparison of the geometric approach and the PD-like control shows very similar behavior between geometric and PD-like controllers.

This work consists of two parts. In the first part we study nonnegative minimizers of general degenerate elliptic functionals, ∫ F (X, u, ∇u)dX → min, for variational kernels F that are discontinuous in ụ with discontinuity of order ~ X{u>0}. The Euler-Lagrange equation is therefore governed by a non-homogeneous, degenerate elliptic equation with free boundary between the positive and the zero phases of the minimizer. We show optimal gradient estimate and nondegeneracy of minima. We also address weak and strong regularity properties of free boundary, ∂ red {u>0}, has H n-1- total measure. For more specific problems that arise in jet flows, we show the reduced free boundary is locally the graph of a C1,y function. In the second part of work we provide a rather complete description of the sharp regularity theory for a family of heterogeneous, two-phase variational free boundary problems, y→ min, ruled by nonlinear, degenerate elliptic operators. Included in such family are heterogeneous jets and cavities problems of Prandtl-Batchelor type, y = 0; singular degenerate elliptic equations and obstacle type systems, y = 1. Linear versions of these problems have been subjects of intense research for the past four decades or so. The nonlinear counterparts treated in this present work introduce substantial new difficulties since the most of the classical theories developed earlier, such that as monotonicity and almost monotonicity formulae, are no longer available. Nonetheless, the innovative solutions designed in this work provide new answers even in the classical context of linear, nondegenerate equations. Mostraremos estimativa gradiente ótima e não-degenerescência do mínimo.

_____________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT In this dissertation. The notions or categories of causality and determinism have accompanied the formation of modern sciences, and primarily those of physics. The current nowadays use tends often, but wrongly, to get them identified in the reevaluations to which they are submitted in physics itself. In this work we intend to clarify the first of these notions, more precisely physical causality, by following its elaboration with the beginnings of dynamics, through its first utilizations and conceptualizations in the making of the mathematization of mechanics, before being extended to physics in a general way. We will see how, while having been supported by one of the traditional philosophical aspects of the idea of causality (that one of “efficient cause”), physical causality breaks with the metaphysical meaning that was previously attached to it. Rather more than in the Newton's Principia, as it is usually thought, it is in the re-elaboration made by d'Alembert, in his Treatise of dynamics, of the laws of motion considered as principles, and expressed by differential calculus, that the idea of physical causality is explicitly considered indissociably of its effect, that is the change of motion. The respective thoughts of Newton and d'Alembert on the notions of cause and force are, in this respect, in opposition with regard to the properly physical nature of this change. The change of motion was viewed by d'Alembert as immanent to motion, for its cause could be circumscribed by its effect, whereas it remained mathematical and metaphysical in the newtonian conception of the external force taken as a mathematical substitute of the cause, which was the common way to consider forces before Lagrange's analytical mechanics. It is the physical conception inherited from d'Alembert that was thenafter to prevail through lagrangean analytical mechanics that permitted to re-integrate physically and rationally the concept of force in its eulerian differential transcription., As noções ou categorias de causalidade e determinismo acompanharam a formação das ciências modernas e, em primeiro lugar, da física.

- Abstract
Investigação adicional a ainda requerida nestas áreas.

- Abstract
This textbook introduces readers to international law by linking it to the Harry Potter universe. Given the current changes in the international sphere away from a state-centric system to a multitude of non-state actors, it tests the legal regime by applying it to the out-of-the-box concept of wizards and thus rids the doctrinal debate of political factors. More specifically, the book explains core concepts of public international law, covering the elements of a state, state responsibility, jurisdiction, enforcement of international law and immunity. In the wizarding world, it addresses questions of statehood by discussing when a wizarding state is responsible for the crimes committed by its wizards, who has jurisdiction over crimes, and how international law is enforced. In addition, it introduces and explains the fundamentals of international humanitarian law, international human rights law, international criminal law, and air law by applying them to the wizarding world. The textbook is intended for anyone looking for an accessible introduction to public international law and its application.

- Abstract
Using a unique application of Third World Approaches to International Law (TWAIL), this book provides a critical, interdisciplinary, examination of the contemporary practice of UN peacekeeping. Is peacekeeping intervention? Since its conception in the mid-1950s, peacekeeping has significantly evolved from traditional, lightly armed, passive operations to robust, multi-dimensional stabilisation peacekeeping operations. This raises questions as to whether this is simply a natural evolution of peacekeeping or whether it marks an expansion of the concept beyond its boundaries, pushing it into the realm of peace enforcement or intervention. In response, this book examines the frameworks which govern UN peacekeeping and seeks to understand the relationship between peacekeeping and the principle of non-intervention. Providing practical examples from the United Nations'operations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and drawing upon interviews with key international actors including UN personnel, the book explores the boundaries of peacekeeping, contending that peacekeeping, at times, becomes a form of intervention. This, the book argues, is detrimental both to the concept of peacekeeping and to the host state, and it concludes by offering a series of recommendations to re-affirm peacekeeping's boundaries and amplify the effectiveness of contemporary peacekeeping. This book will be of interest to scholars and students in international law, international relations, politics, history and criminology.

- Abstract
This book aims at introducing students into the modern analytical foundations to treat problems and situations in the Calculus of Variations solidly and rigorously. Since no background is taken for granted or assumed, as the textbook pretends to be self-contained, areas like basic Functional Analysis and Sobolev spaces are studied to the point that chapters devoted to these topics can be utilized by themselves as an introduction to these important parts of Analysis. The material in this regard has been selected to serve the needs of classical variational problems, leaving broader treatments for more advanced and specialized courses in those areas. It should not be forgotten that problems in the Calculus of Variations historically played a crucial role in pushing Functional Analysis as a discipline on its own right. The style is intentionally didactic. After a first general chapter to place optimization problems in infinite-dimensional spaces in perspective, the first part of the book focuses on the initial important concepts in Functional Analysis and introduces Sobolev spaces in dimension one as a preliminary, simpler case (much in the same way as in the successful book of H. Brezis). Once the analytical framework is covered, one-dimensional variational problems are examined in detail including numerous examples and exercises. The second part dwells, again as a first-round, on another important chapter of Functional Analysis that students should be exposed to, and that eventually will find some applications in subsequent chapters. The first chapter of this part examines continuous operators and the important principles associated with mappings between functional spaces; and another one focuses on compact operators and their fundamental and remarkable properties for Analysis. Finally, the third part advances to multi-dimensional Sobolev spaces and the corresponding problems in the Calculus of Variations. In this setting, problems become much more involved and, for this same reason, much more interesting and appealing. In particular, the final chapter dives into a number of advanced topics, some of which reflect a personal taste. Other possibilities stressing other kinds of problems are possible. In summary, the text pretends to help students with their first exposure to the modern calculus of variations and the analytical foundation associated with it. In particular, it covers an extended introduction to basic functional analysis and to Sobolev spaces. The tone of the text and the set of proposed exercises will facilitate progressive understanding until the need for further challenges beyond the topics addressed here will push students to more advanced horizons.
