Background: Given the importance of medication adherence among individuals with bipolar disorder (BD), this analysis from an ongoing randomized controlled trial (RCT) examined the relationship between BD symptoms, functioning and adherence in 69 poorly adherent adults with BD., Method: Study inclusion criteria included being ≥ 18 years old with BD Type 1 or 2, difficulties with medication adherence and actively symptomatic as measured by Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) score ≥ 36, Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) > 8 or Montgomery Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) > 8. Adherence was measured in 2 ways: 1) the self-reported Tablets Routine Questionnaire (TRQ) and 2) electronic pill container monitoring (eCap pillbox). BD symptoms and functioning were measured with the MADRS, YMRS, Clinical Global Impressions Scale (CGI), and Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF). Only screening and baseline data were examined., Results: Mean age was 42.32 (SD = 12.99) years, with 72.46% (n = 50) female and 43.48% (n = 30) non-white. Mean past 7-day percentage of days with missed BD medications using TRQ was 40.63% (SD = 32.61) and 30.30% (SD = 30.41) at screening and baseline, respectively. Baseline adherence using eCap was 42.16% (SD = 35.85) in those with available eCap data (n = 41). Worse adherence based on TRQ was significantly associated with higher MADRS (p = 0.04) and CGI (p = .03) but lower GAF (p = 0.02). eCAP measured adherence was not significantly associated with clinical variables., Conclusion: While depression and functioning were approximate markers of adherence, reliance on patient self-report or BD symptom presentation may give an incomplete picture of medication-taking behaviors., (Copyright © 1964–2024 by MedWorks Media Inc, Los Angeles, CA All rights reserved. Purpose: People with homonymous hemianopia (HH) benefit from applying compensatory scanning behaviour that limits the consequences of HH in a specific task. The aim of the study is to (i) review the current literature on task-specific scanning behaviour that improves performance and (ii) identify differences between this performance-enhancing scanning behaviour and scanning behaviour that is spontaneously adopted or acquired through training., Materials and Methods: The databases PsycInfo, Medline, and Web of Science were searched for articles on scanning behaviour in people with HH., Results: The final sample contained 60 articles, reporting on three main tasks, i.e., search ( N  = 17), reading ( N  = 16) and mobility ( N  = 14), and other tasks ( N  = 18). Five articles reported on two different tasks. Specific scanning behaviour related to task performance in search, reading, and mobility tasks. In search and reading tasks, spontaneous adaptations differed from this performance-enhancing scanning behaviour. Training could induce adaptations in scanning behaviour, enhancing performance in these two tasks. For mobility tasks, limited to no information was found on spontaneous and training-induced adaptations to scanning behaviour., Conclusions: Performance-enhancing scanning behaviour is mainly task-specific. Spontaneous development of such scanning behaviour is rare. Luckily, current compensatory scanning training programs can induce such scanning behaviour, which confirms that providing scanning training is important.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONScanning behaviour that improves performance in people with homonymous hemianopia (HH) is task-specific.Most people with HH do not spontaneously adopt scanning behaviour that improves performance.Compensatory scanning training can induce performance-enhancing scanning behaviour.

Discussions of politics have become increasingly common in the workplace, likely due to increasing political polarization around the world. Because of this, political conversations have the potential to be emotionally charged and disruptive, creating tension in the workplace and negatively affecting employee productivity and well-being. In light of this possibility, the goal of the current investigation was to examine the costs of ambient political conversations in the workplace, assuming that simply overhearing such discussions-without being a participant in them-may have unintended consequences for employees. Across three studies, our findings indicated that employees experience negative affect after overhearing political conversations at work, with these effects being attenuated (amplified) in contexts where employees perceive that their coworkers are more (less) similar to them. In addition to unpacking the mechanisms through which ambient workplace political conversations might impact employee outcomes, our findings from Studies 3A-B provide evidence that under certain circumstances (i.e., when employees agree with the content of ambient workplace political conversations), employees may experience a boost in positive affect after overhearing such conversations at work. Altogether, our findings provide insight into the costs and potential benefits associated with overhearing coworkers discussing politics in the workplace, particularly for those employees who perceive themselves to be dissimilar from their coworkers. Many shallow coastal bays have been closed off from the sea to mitigate the risk of flooding, resulting in coastal reservoir lakes with artificial armoured shorelines. Often these enclosed ecosystems show a persistent decline in biodiversity and ecosystem services, which is likely reflected in their food-web structure. We therefore hypothesize that the food webs of coastal reservoir lakes with armoured shorelines (1) consist of relatively few species with a low food-web connectance and short food chains, and (2) are mainly fuelled by autochthonous organic matter produced in the pelagic zone. To investigate these two hypotheses, we used stable-isotope analysis to determine the food-web structure of lake Markermeer (The Netherlands), a large reservoir lake with armoured shorelines in a former coastal bay area. Contrary to expectation, connectance of the food web in lake Markermeer was comparable to other lakes, while food-chain length was in the higher range. However, the trophic links revealed that numerous macroinvertebrates and fish species in this constructed lake exhibited omnivorous feeding behaviour. Furthermore, in line with our second hypothesis, primary consumers heavily relied on pelagically derived organic matter, while benthic primary production exerted only a minor and seasonal influence on higher trophic levels. Stable-isotope values and the C:N ratio of sediment organic matter in the lake also aligned more closely with phytoplankton than with benthic primary producers. Moreover, terrestrial subsidies of organic matter were virtually absent in lake Markermeer. These findings support the notion that isolation of the lake through shore armouring and the lack of littoral habitats in combination with persistent resuspension of sediments have affected the food web. Background: Fibrinogen is a plasma protein forming the fibrin scaffold of blood clots. Its mechanical properties therefore affect the risk of bleeding as well as thrombosis. There has been much recent interest in the biophysical mechanisms controlling fibrin mechanics; however, the role of molecular heterogeneity of the circulating fibrinogen in determining clot mechanical function remains poorly characterized., Objectives: By comparing 2 fibrinogen variants where the only difference is the Aα-chain length, with one variant having a globular domain at its C-terminus, this study aimed to reveal how the molecular structure impacts the structure and mechanics of fibrin networks., Methods: We characterized the mechanical response to large shear for networks formed from 2 recombinant fibrinogen variants: the most prevalent variant in circulation with a molecular weight of 340 kDa (recombinant human fibrinogen [rFib] 340) and a minor variant with a molecular weight of 420 kDa (rFib420)., Results: We show that the elastic properties of the 2 variants are identical when fibrin is cross-linked with factor XIIIa but differ strongly in its absence. Uncross-linked rFib420 networks are softer and up to 3-fold more extensible than rFib340 networks. Electron microscopy imaging showed that the 2 variants formed networks with a comparable structure, except at 4 mg/mL, where rFib420 formed denser networks., Conclusion: We propose that the α E C domains of rFib420 increase the extensibility of uncross-linked fibrin networks by promoting protofibril sliding, which is blocked by FXIIIa cross-linking. The balanced segregation of homologous chromosomes during meiosis is essential for fertility and is mediated by crossovers (COs). A strong reduction of CO number leads to the unpairing of homologous chromosomes after the withdrawal of the synaptonemal complex. This results in the random segregation of univalents during meiosis I and ultimately to the production of unbalanced and sterile gametes. However, if CO shortage is combined with another meiotic alteration that restitutes the first meiotic division, then uniform and balanced unreduced male gametes, essentially composed of nonrecombinant homologs, are produced. This mitosis-like division is of interest to breeders because it transmits most of the parental heterozygosity to the gametes. In potato, CO shortage, a recessive trait previously referred to as desynapsis, was tentatively mapped to chromosome 8. In this article, we have fine-mapped the position of the CO shortage locus and identified StMSH4, an essential component of the class I CO pathway, as the most likely candidate gene. A 7 base-pair insertion in the second exon of StMSH4 was found to be associated with CO shortage in our mapping population. We also identified a second allele with a 3,820 base-pair insertion and confirmed that both alleles cannot complement each other. Such nonfunctional alleles appear to be common in potato cultivars. More than half of the varieties we tested are carriers of mutational load at the StMSH4 locus. It is clear that sexual harassment has a profound impact on the victims who are targets of these egregious behaviors. Comparably less is known, however, about how other members of the organization react affectively and behaviorally when these acts transpire, and who has stronger reactions to such events. In the current research, we draw from the sexual harassment and vicarious mistreatment literatures to develop a theoretical model that considers how bystanders react behaviorally to ambient harassment-the experience of overhearing sexist and disparaging gender-related comments without necessarily being the direct target of such remarks-by enacting various types of voice behaviors at work via feelings of fear and anger. We also explore whether certain work conditions-namely an organization's tolerance for sexual harassment-attenuate such reactions, and how gender of the witness to ambient harassment may shape the effects. Across an experimental investigation (Study 1) and an experience sampling study (Study 2), we find that exposure to ambient harassment is positively related to feelings of fear and anger. In Study 2, we further unpack the differential behavioral consequences associated with ambient harassment, finding that while anger is positively related to voice after witnessing ambient harassment, fear negatively contributed to voice behaviors at work. Interestingly, these effects were further exacerbated for employees who worked in an organization tolerant of sexual harassment and for men (vs. women). Combined, our results shed light on how, and when, employees can feel empowered to enact voice behaviors after experiencing ambient harassment. The Traffic Eye Scanning and Compensation Analyzer (TREYESCAN) is introduced as an innovative eye tracking test designed to measure compensatory eye movements in individuals with visual field defects. The primary objective of the test is to quantitatively assess and analyze the compensatory eye movements employed by patients with visual field defects while viewing videos of various traffic scenes from the viewpoint of a driver of a passenger car. The filming process involved capturing a wide range of driving conditions and hazards, aiming to replicate real-world scenarios. Specific dynamic areas of interest within these scenes were selected and assessed by a panel of experts on medical and practical fitness to drive. Pilot measurements were conducted on a sample of 20 normally-sighted individuals during two different measurement sessions. The results provide valuable insights into how individuals without visual impairment view the dynamic scenes presented in the test. Moving forward, the TREYESCAN will be used in a case-control study involving glaucoma patients and control subjects, with the goal of further investigating and understanding the mechanisms employed by individuals with glaucoma to compensate for their visual field defects., (© 2023. The artificial intelligence (AI) revolution has arrived, as AI systems are increasingly being integrated across organizational functions into the work lives of employees. This coupling of employees and machines fundamentally alters the work-related interactions to which employees are accustomed, as employees find themselves increasingly interacting with, and relying on, AI systems instead of human coworkers. This increased coupling of employees and AI portends a shift toward more of an "asocial system," wherein people may feel socially disconnected at work. Drawing upon the social affiliation model, we develop a model delineating both adaptive and maladaptive consequences of this situation. Specifically, we theorize that the more employees interact with AI in the pursuit of work goals, the more they experience a need for social affiliation (adaptive)-which may contribute to more helping behavior toward coworkers at work-as well as a feeling of loneliness (maladaptive), which then further impair employee well-being after work (i.e., more insomnia and alcohol consumption). In addition, we submit that these effects should be especially pronounced among employees with higher levels of attachment anxiety. Results across four studies ( N = 794) with mixed methodologies (i.e., survey study, field experiment, and simulation study; Studies 1-4) with employees from four different regions (i.e., Taiwan, Indonesia, United States, and Malaysia) generally support our hypotheses. Background: While it is established that video monitoring technology (compared with the use of in-person sitters) is a safe and cost-effective solution for hospitals, little is known about the impact of these approaches on nurses' stress and well-being., Purpose: To compare the use of video monitoring technology and in-person sitters (likely a resource reallocated from nurses) for monitoring patients on nurses' emotional labor and burnout., Method: An experience sampling method was conducted by surveying nurses twice a day for 3 weeks, resulting in 524 survey administrations provided by 74 nurses. The surveys included measures of daily video monitoring technology and in-person sitter use, emotional labor, emotional exhaustion, and nurse career commitment., Findings: There were positive effects from video monitoring technology and negative effects of in-person sitters on emotional labor and emotional exhaustion, particularly for nurses lower in commitment., Discussion: Hospital adoption of video monitoring technology has a positive impact on nurses compared with in-person sitter use.

The literature on abusive supervision largely presumes that employees respond to abuse in a relatively straightforward way: When abuse is present, outcomes are unfavorable, and when abuse is absent, outcomes are favorable (or, at least less unfavorable). Yet despite the recognition that abusive supervision can vary over time, little consideration has been given to how past experiences of abuse may impact the ways employees react to it (or, its absence) in the present. This is a notable oversight, as it is widely acknowledged that past experiences create a context against which experiences in the present are compared. By applying a temporal lens to the experience of abusive supervision, we identify abusive supervision inconsistency as a phenomenon that may have different outcomes than would otherwise be predicted by the current consensus in this literature. We draw from theories on time and stress appraisal to develop a model that explains when, why, and for which employees, inconsistent abusive supervision may have negative outcomes (specifically, identifying anxiety as a proximal outcome of abusive supervision inconsistency that has downstream effects on turnover intentions). Moreover, the aforementioned theoretical perspectives dovetail in identifying employee workplace status as a moderator that may buffer employees from the stressful consequences of inconsistent abusive supervision. We test our model using two experience sampling studies with polynomial regression and response surface analyses. Our research makes important theoretical and practical contributions to the abusive supervision literature, as well as the literature on time. Eye tracking measurements taken while watching a wide field screen are challenging to perform. Commercially available remote eye trackers typically do not measure more than 35 degrees in eccentricity. Analysis software was developed using the Pupil Core Eye Tracking data to analyze viewing behavior under circumstances as natural as possible, on a 1.55-m-wide screen allowing free head movements. Additionally, dynamic area of interest (AOI) analyses were performed on data of participants viewing traffic scenes. A toolkit was created including software for simple allocation of dynamic AOIs (semi-automatically and manually), measurement of parameters such as dwell times and time to first entry, and overlaying gaze and AOIs on video. Participants (n =11) were asked to look at 13 dynamic AOIs in traffic scenes from appearance to disappearance in order to validate the setup and software. Different AOI margins were explored for the included objects. The median ratio between total appearance time and dwell time was about 90% for most objects when appropriate margins were chosen. This validated open-source toolkit is readily available for researchers who want to perform dynamic AOI analyses with the Pupil Core eye tracker, especially when measurements are desired on a wide screen, in various fields such as psychology, transportation, and low vision research., (© 2022. Background: Staphylococcus aureus is a common gram-positive bacterium that is the causative agent for several human diseases, including sepsis. A key virulence mechanism is pathogen binding to host fibrinogen through the C-terminal region of the γ-chain. Previous work demonstrated that Fgg Δ5 mice expressing mutant fibrinogen γ Δ5 lacking a S. aureus binding motif had significantly improved survival following S. aureus septicemia. Fibrinogen γ' is a human splice variant that represents about 10% to 15% of the total fibrinogen in plasma and circulates as a fibrinogen γ'-γ heterodimer (phFibγ'-γ). The fibrinogen γ'-chain is also expected to lack S. aureus binding function., Objective: Determine if human fibrinogen γ'-γ confers host protection during S. aureus septicemia., Methods: Analyses of survival and the host response following S. aureus septicemia challenge in Fgg Δ5 mice and mice reconstituted with purified phFibγ'-γ or phFibγ-γ., Results: Reconstitution of fibrinogen-deficient or wildtype mice with purified phFibγ'-γ prior to infection provided a significant prolongation in host survival relative to mice reconstituted with purified phFibγ-γ, which was superior to that observed with heterozygous Fgg Δ5 mice. Improved survival could not be accounted for by quantitative differences in fibrinogen-dependent adhesion or clumping, but phFibγ'-γ-containing mixtures generated notably smaller bacterial aggregates. Background  Fibrinogen variants as a result of alternative messenger RNA splicing or protein degradation can affect fibrin(ogen) functions. The levels of these variants might be altered during coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), potentially affecting disease severity or the thrombosis risk. Aim  To investigate the levels of fibrinogen variants in plasma of patients with COVID-19. Methods  In this case-control study, we measured levels of functional fibrinogen using the Clauss assay. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays were used to measure antigen levels of total, intact (nondegraded Aα chain), extended Aα chain (α E ), and γ' fibrinogen in healthy controls, patients with pneumococcal infection in the intensive care unit (ICU), ward patients with COVID-19, and ICU patients with COVID-19 (with and without thrombosis, two time points). Results  Healthy controls and ward patients with COVID-19 ( n  = 10) showed similar fibrinogen (variant) levels. ICU patients with COVID-19 who later did ( n  = 19) or did not develop thrombosis ( n  = 18) and ICU patients with pneumococcal infection ( n  = 6) had higher absolute levels of functional, total, intact, and α E fibrinogen than healthy controls ( n  = 7). The relative α E fibrinogen levels were higher in ICU patients with COVID-19 than in healthy controls, while relative γ' fibrinogen levels were lower. After diagnosis of thrombosis, only the functional fibrinogen levels were higher in ICU patients with COVID-19 and thrombosis than in those without, while no differences were observed in the other fibrinogen variants. Helping is a foundational aspect of organizational life and the prototypical organizational citizenship behavior, with most research implicitly assuming that helping benefits its recipients. Despite this, when scholars focus on help recipients, the experience is depicted as somewhat aversive that may actually reduce recipient perceptions of competence. The result is a literature at odds as to whether receiving help is beneficial. Our thesis is that this is the wrong question on which to focus. Instead, we submit that more valuable insight can be gained by asking: " when is receiving help beneficial vs. not beneficial, and for whom ?" Regarding when, we differentiate between receiving help that is empowering (i.e., offers tools to empower recipients to become more self-reliant) or nonempowering (i.e., offers only immediate, short-term solutions). Regarding for whom, we draw from theory and research on stereotype threat and benevolent sexism to explain why the help recipient's gender is a critical moderator of the link between receiving nonempowering help specifically and competence perceptions. We present a multistudy "full-cycle" approach to test our hypotheses and understand the consequences of receiving empowering versus nonempowering help in more depth. Combined, our results help shift the conversation as noted above, and identify important practical implications that speak to a larger discussion on systematic disadvantages for women at work. C 4 F 7 N and C 5 F 10 O are the most promising SF 6 alternatives as eco-friendly insulating gaseous mediums in electrical engineering. It is necessary to clarify their electrical stability and decomposition mechanisms. In this work, we first introduced our experimental results for decomposition products of C 4 F 7 N/CO 2 and C 5 F 10 O/synthetic air mixtures under partial discharge and spark discharge conditions. Then, we performed ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations on the typical decomposition products. The simulations were performed under standard electron impact mass spectrometry (EI-MS); thus, the statistical results of the mass spectra were compared with those of the experimentally obtained standard mass spectra from the NIST database. The AIMD simulation method in simulating the electron-induced ionization process was verified and found to be reliable. Finally, the calculations were also performed for C 4 F 7 N and C 5 F 10 O with incident electron energies of 20 eV and 70 eV, respectively. The dominant pathway for both gases is the formation of CF 3 + with the fracture of the C-C bond. The AIMD simulation is able to predict the decomposition channels after electron-impact ionization without any preconceived knowledge of fragmentation pathways, which provides a novel insight into understanding the decomposition mechanisms of C 4 F 7 N and C 5 F 10 O under different discharge conditions with different energies.
