In the human body, there are millions of living microorganisms involved in protecting the body from invaders, helping digestion and regulating moods, but there are also harmful pathogens that cause infectious diseases. For instance, the coronavirus (COVID-19) has caused considerable loss of life since its outbreak. Comprehensive analysis and characterization of microbes is of significant importance to understand the function and role of microorganisms, and rapid detection and identification of unknown pathogens are essential in early diagnosis, treatment monitoring and personalized medicine. Mass spectrometry is a technique to ionize molecules and detect the mass-to-charge ratio of the generated ions. The technique is widely used in hospitals for pathogenic bacteria identification, as well as in environmental science and food science for biosafety control. This book summarizes the most recent development of mass spectrometry techniques in microbial analysis, including mass spectrometry-based microbial identification, bacterial antimicrobial resistance study, data mining algorithm development, omics for microbial research, applications in clinical diagnosis, environmental science and food science, and more. It will guide researchers in the field, and those who are about to enter the field, in the most appropriate methods to characterize microbes and enable their detection.

Activated carbon has long been used for filtering contaminants, thanks to its large surface area for adsorption. Kláštery na hranicích a za hranicemi Čech představují doplněné a rozšířené vydání třetího dílu souboru Dějin cisterckého řádu v Čechách (1142–1420), který původně vyšel v roce 2009. Oproti prvnímu vydání byl tento svazek doplněn o výsledky dalšího studia pramenů, stejně jako o nové poznatky české i zahraniční literatury. V první části se čtenář seznámí s osudy dvou klášterů, jež ve středověku patřily k Českému království, změnou zemských hranic se však dnes nacházejí mimo území Čech (Marienthal v Sasku, Žďár nad Sázavou na Moravě). Prostřední část knihy se zaměřuje na kontakty českých opatství s cisterckými kláštery v okolních zemích. Nově se zde objevují pasáže věnované vazbám českých řádových domů k jejich mateřským klášterům na území dnešního Německa a Rakouska. Významně byl doplněn exkurz Pohřby českých princezen a dalších členů rodů vládnoucích v Čechách v cisterckých klášterech. Závěr publikace tvoří čtyři kapitoly zaměřené na německé a rakouské řádové domy, které měly ve středověku v Čechách svou pozemkovou držbu (Waldsassen, Altzelle, Grünhain, Zwettl). Tyto kapitoly jsou výrazně stručnější než pojednání o klášterech Marienthal a Žďár, neboť jejich záměrem je představit především vazby těchto institucí k českému prostředí. Text doplňuje bohatý ilustrační materiál (107 fotografií a 23 map a schémat), který představuje významnou složku díla. Kniha vychází v nové grafické úpravě, s řadou nových fotografií a map.

The problem of God's action in the world is at the heart of debates today on the relationship between science and religion. By analysing the issue through the lens of analytic philosophy, Marek Slomka reveals how philosophy can successfully bridge science and theology to bring greater clarity to divine action.This book identifies essential aspects from various branches of theism, starting with traditional Thomistic approaches, through to their modified forms such as Molinism and contemporary varieties such as free-will theism and probabilistic theism. Analysing crucial elements of God's nature including omnipotence, omniscience, his relation to time and the tension between immanence and transcendence, Slomka reveals the difficulties in proposing a single conception of God through one theistic tradition. Instead of simplistically juxtaposing particular theistic trends, he highlights the value of pluralistic insights that also draw on important scientific theories, including Darwin's evolution, quantum mechanics and cosmology. By taking a renewed stance on theism that takes into account modern scientific knowledge, Slomka argues for a new presentation of the problem of God's action in the world.

Zastosowane ujęcie metodologiczne prowadzi do przedstawienia Zapisu socjologicznego jako aktualizacji znaczeń doświadczenia i rytuału zawartych w tradycji pojęcia fotografii, a odzwierciedlonych w fotograficznym cyklu Zofii Rydet. Autorzy stawiają pytanie o przyczyny rosnącej dziś popularności odkrywanych w nim obrazów świata, podejmując jednocześnie próbę rekonstrukcji fotograficznej poetyki Zofii Rydet. W rozważaniach tych gatunkowe pojęcie cyklu jest rozpatrywane m.in. jako zagadnienie z pogranicza narratologii oraz artystycznych praktyk performance'u. Twórczość polskiej fotografki pełni w książce także funkcję poznawczej inspiracji do szerszych rozważań teoretycznych nad miejscem obrazów fotograficznych we współczesnej kulturze. Aspekt teoretyczny publikacji prowadzi ku propozycji pojęcia „zwrotu fotograficznego”, którego przykładem są prace Zofii Rydet. Teoretyczny kontekst kulturowy nakreślony wraz z podjętą w książce próbą omówienia immanentnej poetyki fotograficznej Zofii Rydet znajdują wspólny punkt w powrocie do korzeni fotografii, prezentując proces kształtowania się ostatecznego pomysłu cyklu fotograficznego jako splotu wartości estetycznej z towarzyszącą jej obserwacją antropologiczną.

Utraquismus in Böhmen und der reformatorische Bewegung ab 1517 in Sachsen handelt es sich um zwei unterschiedliche Reformationen, jedoch mit einer Fülle von sachlichen und personalen Verbindungslinien. Diese rücken im vorliegenden Band erstmalig in einen gemeinsamen Fokus.»Wir sind alle Hussiten«, bekannte Martin Luther 1520 nach der Lektüre von Schriften des tschechischen Reformators Jan Hus, der gut einhundert Jahre zuvor als Ketzer verbrannt worden war. Die beiden Reformatoren verbinden, ebenso wie die von ihnen ausgehenden Erweckungs- und Erneuerungsbewegungen, viele Ähnlichkeiten, Übereinstimmungen und parallele Entwicklungsverläufe. Dennoch werden sie meist getrennt betrachtet. Der Sammelband analysiert Aspekte der Reformation in Böhmen und Sachsen und rückt so die beiden religiösen Brennpunkte in einen gemeinsamen Fokus. Platon, Cyceron i Machiavelli są uważani za klasyków filozofii polityki. Ich dociekania nieustannie pobudzają wyobraźnię badaczy oraz prowokują do kolejnych wykładni i interpretacji. Mnie szczególnie ciekawe wydało się pokazanie na przykładzie rozważań zogniskowanych na èthosie przywódcy politycznego pewnej ciągłości myśli, jaką można dostrzec w poglądach owych myślicieli, oraz wskazanie różnic także w nich występujących, a wynikających z osobistego charakteru ich spostrzeżeń i indywidualnego rozumienia rzeczywistości państwowej. Mimo żywego zainteresowania dziełami Platona, Cycerona czy Machiavellego oraz nielicznych prac porównujących przemyślenia starożytnych z opiniami pisarzy renesansowych, ciągle brakuje tego rodzaju opracowania. Mój niedosyt wzbudził dodatkowo fakt, iż twórczość Francesca Guicciardiniego, która jest cennym źródłem informacji dotyczących sytuacji społeczno-politycznej renesansowej Florencji, a poprzez konfrontację z opiniami Machiavellego daje pełniejszy obraz tamtej epoki oraz pozwala lepiej zrozumieć ówczesne tendencje, na gruncie literatury polskiej nie znalazła wystarczającego uznania. One cannot overemphasize the importance of studying fluids in motion or at rest for a variety of scientific and engineering endeavors. Fluid mechanics as an art reaches back into antiquity, but its rational formulation is a relatively recent undertaking. Much of the physics of a particular flow situation can be understood by conducting appropriate experiments. Flow visualization techniques offer a useful tool to establish an overall picture of a flow field and to delineate broadly its salient features before embarking on more detailed quantitative measurements. Among the single-point measurements that are particularly difficult are those in separated flows, non-Newtonian fluids, rotating flows, and nuclear aerosols. Pressure, shear stress, vorticity, and heat transfer coefficient are also difficult quantities to measure, particularly for time-dependent flows. These and other special situations are among the topics covered in this volume. Each article emphasizes the development of a particular measuring technique. The topics covered were chosen because of their importance to the field, recent appeal, and potential for future development. This is the seventh volume in the series'Mathematics in Industrial Prob­ lems.'The motivation for these volumes is to foster interaction between Industry and Mathematics at the'grass roots level;'that is, at the level of specific problems. These problems come from Industry: they arise from models developed by the industrial scientists in ventures directed at the manufacture of new or improved products. At the same time, these prob­ lems have the potential for mathematical challenge and novelty. To identify such problems, I have visited industries and had discussions with their scientists. Some of the scientists have subsequently presented their problems in the IMA Seminar on Industrial Problems. The book is based on the seminar presentations and on questions raised in subse­ quent discussions. Each chapter is devoted to one of the talks and is self­ contained. The chapters usually provide references to the mathematical literature and a list of open problems which are of interest to the industrial scientists. For some problems a partial solution is indicated briefly. The last chapter of the book contains a short description of solutions to some of the problems raised in previous volumes, as well as references to papers in which such solutions have been published. Databases containing large numbers of sequences, polymorphisms, structures, metabolic pathways, and gene expression profiles of normal and diseased tissues are rapidly being generated for human and model organisms. Bioinformatics is therefore gaining importance in the annotation of genomic sequences; the understanding of the interplay among and between genes and proteins; the analysis of the genetic variability of species; the identification of pharmacological targets; and the inference of evolutionary origins, mechanisms, and relationships. This proceedings volume contains an up-to-date exchange of knowledge, ideas, and solutions to conceptual and practical issues of bioinformatics by researchers, professionals, and industry practitioners at the 6th Asia-Pacific Bioinformatics Conference held in Kyoto, Japan, in January 2008.

Research in the field of gene regulation is evolving rapidly in the ever-changing scientific environment. Advances in microarray techniques and comparative genomics have enabled more comprehensive studies of regulatory genomics. The study of genomic binding locations of transcription factors has enabled a more comprehensive modeling of regulatory networks. In addition, complete genomic sequences and comparison of numerous related species have demonstrated the conservation of non-coding DNA sequences, which often provide evidence for cis-regulatory binding sites. Systematic methods to decipher the regulatory mechanism are also crucial for corroborating these regulatory networks; key to these methods are motif discovery algorithms that can help predict cis-regulatory elements. These DNA-motif discovery programs are becoming more sophisticated and are beginning to leverage evidence from comparative genomics. These topics and more were discussed at the 3rd Annual RECOMB Workshop on Regulatory Genomics, which brought together more than 90 attendees and included about 22 excellent talks from leading researchers in the field. This proceedings volume contains ten selected, original manuscripts that were presented during the workshop.
