In the village communities of Kassena, there have been groups of trees for years, which people are wary of destroying because they harbor supernatural forces. These powerfully powerful forces can be embodied by a stone, tree, mountain, piece of iron, animal tail, or any other object. Thus, sacred groves are a traditional phenomenon that can be found in certain rural and even urban areas often protected by village communities. These sacred sites serve as places of worship, of worship of divinities, framed by enormous prohibitions. These prohibitions have favored an admirable vegetation of certain sacred groves which have today become like small forests in Kassena country. The objective of this research is to analyze the explanatory factors of the phenomenon of sacred groves commonly called tangwan punu in Kassena as well as their implication in the preservation of the environment. To achieve this objective, a qualitative approach has been favored (semi-structured interviews, focus group, observation of sacrificial rites in the sites). The analysis shows that the sacred groves are a total social phenomenon around which an important local knowledge is built between the visible and the invisible, that is to say, between men and the divine powers. The study has shown that the motivations for the creation of these places in this community are diverse but also, are spaces allowing the safeguard of the environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, new peripherally substituted symmetric zinc and magnesium phthalocyanines (4 and 5) were successfully prepared by cyclotetramerization of the tetrahydropyrimidone (THPM)-linked phthalonitrile 3. The identity of the compounds were confirmed primarily through spectroscopic analysis including NMR, FT-IR, UV-Vis and MALDI-TOF mass spectroscopy. The photophysical and photochemical properties of the synthesized phthalocyanines (Pcs) were examined using UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence emission spectroscopy techniques. The quantum yields of singlet oxygen were found to be 0.50 and 0.33 for compounds 4 and 5 in DMSO, respectively. In addition to photo-physicochemical properties, the enhanced biological activities of compounds 4 and 5 were investigated using a range of biological assays, namely, antibiofilm, microbial cell viability, antioxidant, DNA cleavage, antimicrobial and photodynamic antimicrobial assays. The maximum DPPH inhibition of 4 and 5 was detected as 40.46% and 25.76% at 100 mg L -1 , respectively. Fragmentation of the DNA molecule was observed at concentrations of 25 mg L -1 , 50 mg L -1 and 100 mg L -1 for 4 and 5. Additionally, effective inhibition of microbial cell viability was observed with the targeted Pcs. The antibiofilm properties of these compounds were found to be concentration-dependent. The biofilm inhibition activities of 4 and 5 were found to be 96.01% and 92.04% for S. aureus , while they were 95.42% and 91.27%, for P. aeruginosa , respectively. The antimicrobial activities of 4 and 5 on different microorganisms were evaluated using the microdilution assay. In the case of photodynamic antimicrobial treatment, the newly synthesized Pcs showed more effective antimicrobial inhibition compared to the control. These findings suggest that compounds 4 and 5 can be used as promising photodynamic antimicrobial agents for the treatment of many diseases, particularly infectious diseases.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has drawn a great scientific attention to cancer treatment over the last decades. However, the bottleneck for the PDT is to find good photosensitizers (PSs) with greater water solubility, no aggregation, and fast discharge from the body. Therefore, there are still a big scientific desire for the synthesizing new rational PSs for treatment of cancer by PDT technique. In favor of improving the competence of PDT, an axially bis[4-(diphenylamino-1,1'-biphenyl-4-ol)] substituted silicon(IV) phthalocyanine (3) was converted to its water-soluble quaternized derivative (3Q). Their structures were fully characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, and different spectroscopic methods such as FT-IR, UV-Vis, MALDI-TOF, and  1 H-NMR. The photophysical properties such as fluorescence quantum yields and lifetimes, and the photochemical properties such as singlet oxygen generation of both phthalocyanines were investigated. Ground and excited-state calculations were performed to explain the observed electronic absorption spectra. The addition of the 4-diphenylamino-1,1'-biphenyl-4-ol groups on the axially positions of the silicon(IV) phthalocyanine increased the singlet oxygen quantum yield from 0.15 to around 0.20. Especially quaternized compound 3Q showed high singlet oxygen quantum yield of 0.26 in water solution. In addition, a spectroscopic investigation of the binding behavior of the quaternized silicon (IV) phthalocyanine complex to bovine serum albumin (BSA) is also studied in this work, confirming the possible interaction. Further theoretical calculations were carried out to find out the plausible-binding regions of the BSA protein. In this current study, the novel bis[4,5-(pyrene-2-yl)-3,6-(hexyloxy)] phthalonitrile (SPN) fluorophore has been successfully synthesized. Structural characterization of this novel compound was performed by different spectroscopic methods such as FT-IR, MALDI-TOF, 1 H-NMR, 13 C-NMR and elemental analyses as well. In addition, the photophysical properties were determined using UV-vis absorption, steady-state fluorescence, time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopic methods and quantum chemical calculations. The metal sensing behavior of the SPN was determined in the presence of various metals (Li + , Na + , K + , Mg 2+ , Ca 2+ , Ba 2+ , Mn 2+ , Fe 3+ , Cr 3+ , Co 2+ , Ni 2+ , Ag + , Cd 2+ , Al 3+ , Hg + and Zn 2+ ) using fluorescence spectroscopy. The novel pyrene based phthalonitrile (SPN) showed high sensitivity and selectivity towards Fe 3+ ion over other examined metal ions. In order to perform the determination of Fe 3+ ion in environmental samples, experimental conditions such as selectivity, stability, precision, sensitivity, accuracy and recovery were optimized. Also, the complex stoichiometry of the novel pyrene based phthalonitrile (SPN) and Fe 3+ ions was determined by a Job's plot. The newly synthesized cyclotriphosphazene cored coumarin chemosensors 5, 6, and 7 were successfully characterized by 1 H NMR, 31 P NMR, and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Additionally, the photophysical and metal sensing properties of the targeted compounds were determined by fluorescence spectroscopy in the presence of various metals (Li + , Na + , K + , Cs + , Mg 2+ , Ca 2+ , Ba 2+ , Cr 3+ , Mn 2+ , Fe 3+ , Co 2+ , Al 3+ , Hg + , Cu 2+ , Zn 2+ , Ag + , and Cd 2+ ) . The fluorescence titration results showed that compounds 5, 6, and 7 could be employed as fluorescent chemosensors for Fe 3+ ions with high sensitivity. Herein, a novel one step synthesis of multicomponent three dimensional polyacrylic acid (PAA) based conducting hydrogel (CH) incorporated with iron phthalocyanine functionalised graphene nanoplatelets (GPL-FePc) is reported. An amperometric glucose biosensor was fabricated by the immobilization of glucose oxidase (GOx) onto the synthesised PAA-VS-PANI/GPL-FePc-CH (where VS-PANI is vinyl substituted polyaniline). Scanning electron microscopy reveals the presence of three dimensional microporous structure with estimated pore size of 19 μm. The 5-(trifluoromethyl)-2-mercaptopyridine substitution onto FePc enabled the solubility of FePc in water and controls the aggregation of GPL-FePc in the synthesised CH. A sharp peak around 699 nm in UV-visible spectra confirms the presence of incorporated GPL-FePc into CH. Cyclic voltammogram of the synthesised CH biosensor exhibited well defined redox peaks with a ΔE p value of 0.26 V in Fe(CN) 6 3-/4- bench mark solution. The fabricated PAA-VS-PANI/GPL-FePc/GO x -CH amperometric biosensor resulted in remarkable detection sensitivity of 18.11 μA mM -1  cm -2 with an average response time of ∼1 s, linearity from 1 to 20 mM, and low detection limit of 6.4 μM for the determination of glucose., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. Axially di-(alpha,alpha-diphenyl-4-pyridylmethoxy) silicon(IV) phthalocyanine (3) and its quaternized derivative (3Q) were synthesized and tested as photosensitizers against tumor and bacterial cells. These new phthalocyanines were characterized by elemental analysis, and different spectroscopic methods such as FT-IR, UV-Vis, MALDI-TOF and 1 H NMR. The photophysical properties such as absorption and fluorescence, and the photochemical properties such as singlet oxygen generation of both phthalocyanines were investigated in solutions. The obtained values were compared to the values obtained with unsubstituted silicon(IV) phthalocyanine dichloride (SiPcCl 2 ). The addition of two di-(alpha,alpha-diphenyl-4-pyridylmethanol) groups as axial ligands showed an improvement of the photophysical and photochemical properties and an increasement of the singlet oxygen quantum yield (Φ Δ ) from 0.15 to 0.33 was determined. The photodynamic efficacy of synthesized photosensitizers (3 and 3Q) were evaluated with promising photocytotoxicity (17% cell survival for 3 and 28% for 3Q) against the cervical cancer cell line (HeLa). The photodynamic inactivation of pathogenic bacterial strains Streptococcus mutans, Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa suggested a high susceptibility with quaternized derivative (3Q). The both Gram-positive bacterial strains were fully photoinactivated with 11μM 3Q and mild light dose 50J.cm -2 . In case of P. aeruginosa the effect was negligible for concentrations up to 22μM 3Q and light dose 100J.cm -2 . The results suggested that the novel axially substituted silicon(IV) phthalocyanines have promising characteristic as photosensitizer towards tumor cells. A novel pyrene containing asymmetric Zn(II) phthalocyanine (AB3 type) was synthesized and characterized by various spectroscopic techniques as well as elemental analysis. A symmetric polyoxyethylene substituted Zn(II) phthalocyanine (B4 type) derivative was also prepared in order to compare the properties and determine the effect of the pyrene group on the phthalocyanine molecule. Composites of synthesized zinc(II) phthalocyanine-single wall carbon nanotubes (ZnPc-SWCNTs) containing 1 and 2 wt% carbon nanotubes were prepared by mixing these two components in dichloromethane followed by removal of the solvent and drying under vacuum. The liquid crystalline properties of the pure compounds and their composites were investigated in comparison with symmetric polyoxyethylene substituted Zn(II) phthalocyanine (B4 type) by using polarized optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction analysis. The distribution of the SWCNTs in the ordered matrix of the columnar mesophase of these derivatives was studied by the method of polarized Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was shown that the nature of the mesophases was not altered in these composites. The I(V) dependencies for the films deposited onto interdigitated electrodes were measured and it was shown that the lateral conductivity tends to increase with increasing SWCNT concentration.

The absorption and fluorescence emission spectra of terpyridine incorporating pyrene moiety (Tpy-pyr) have been recorded in extensive variety of solvents having different polarities. The effect of the solvent on the spectral characteristics are examined. It is shown that Tpy-pyr exhibit positive solvatochromism, large Stokes shift values in polar solvents, and fluorescence in the long wavelength region of the visible range. A linear increasing trend with Stokes shift indicates the presence of Tpy-pyr - solvent interaction. The acquired results could be attributed to the formation of excited states with intramolecular charge transfer. The fluorescence quantum yield was drastically reduced in polar protic solvents and the formation of the twisted states with charge transfer was proposed. Both ground and excited state dipole moments (µg and µe) were determined experimentally by Lippert–Mataga, Reichardt, Bilot-Kawski, Bakhshiev and Kawski-Chamma-Viallet solvatochromic methods analyzed on the base of the microscopic solvent polarity functions. The µg and µe dipole moment of Tpy-pyr estimated from density functional theory (DFT) and those determined experimentally from solvatochromic methods are compared and the results are discussed. A sensitive bromate sensor was developed using nickel phthalocyanine multi-walled carbon nanotubes nanocomposite modified on a glassy carbon electrode. The NiPcMWCNTs nanocomposite was prepared from nickel nanoparticles, phthalocyanine, and functionalized MWCNTs via ultrasonication. UV–visible spectroscopy, SEM, XRD, TEM, and EDX techniques were used to verify the successful fabrication of the nanomaterials. The results of the EIS and CV experiments conducted in 5 mM K3(Fe(CN)6/K4(Fe(CN)6 made in 0.1 M of PBS (pH 7) revealed that the NiPcMWCNTs/GCE exhibited higher current response, faster electron transfer, and high specific capacitance compared to other electrodes. The electrochemical reduction of bromate was actualized in 0.1 M H2SO4 (pH 1) using EIS and SWV techniques. Using the EIS technique, an LoD of 6.72 μM was obtained with a sensitivity of 483.7 μA μM−1 over a linear dynamic range (LDR) of 24–100 μM. Whereas, with the SWV technique, a lower LoD (1.47 μM) was obtained with a higher sensitivity (1293 μA μM−1) over an LDR of 12–56 μM. The developed sensor was characterized by good selectivity, high stability (95.5%), and good reproducibility (% RSD; 3.5%). The fabricated sensor was effectively used to detect bromate in bread samples with a good recovery rate, demonstrating the practical application of the sensor to detect bromate in real samples (bread). Fluorescent High-Performance polymers are well known as high performance engineering thermoplastics because of their good thermal stability, chemical resistance and excellent mechanical properties. Polymers having S-triazine ring become a subject of interest because of enhanced toughness and low moisture absorption and commercially available high performance engineering plastic materials. However, the thermal stability of triazine ring makes it an attractive monomer for use in high temperature polymers. Synthesis of polymers containing chromophoric groups which are responsible for fluorescent property have significant applications in fields such as biosensors, clean energy technologies, explosive sensing, pH/temperature sensor, biological imaging, life science, material science, ultrasensitive molecular diagnosis and novel light - emitting nano devices. The aromatic azo group is being more interest because of the existence of cis-trans isomerism and its effect on the photochromic properties of the polymers. Therefore, polymers having azo group have potential use in a variety of applications. Fluorescent polymers can be developed with different methods; generally, there are two methods for preparation of fluorescent polymers. One of them is polymerization of a monomer having a fluorescent chromophore such as fluorescent compounds as initiator, fluorescent compounds as chain transfer agents, chemical bonding between fluorescent groups and polymers. In this research, different number of the 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a,8-triaza-s-indacene (aza-BODIPY) molecule has been employed to design novel oligomers with considerable electrical and optical properties. The geometries of the designed oligomers were optimized and the IR frequency and cohesive energy were calculated to study their stability. To explore their electronic properties, the HOMO, LUMO energies and Eg of designed oligomers were calculated. It was shown that by enlarging the size of oligomer and increase in number of aza-BODIPY units in designed oligomers, their Eg was narrowed. Finally, it was found that as the numbers of aza-BODIPY units in the oligomers increased, a great enhancement in optical properties was observed. Significant optical properties with strong absorption lines were seen in the visible and near-infrared regions for designed oligomer with six and seven aza-BODIPY units. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Situating the Turkish counterinsurgency within the global context of Cold War counterinsurgencies this article sheds light on counterinsurgency's provocative and affect-generating techniques and its urban dimensions. I argue that the Gazi incidents of 1995 marked the beginning of a new counterinsurgency strategy in Istanbul that combined overt repressive state violence with urban-centred and affect-generating provocative counterinsurgency techniques in an attempt to quell the growing left-wing mobilization and subvert the Turkish and Kurdish left-wing alignment, which was drawing closer at the time. That new strategy was informed by the principles of the low-intensity conflict doctrine—more specifically, by Britain's counterinsurgency warfare in Northern Ireland —that came to prevail during the Cold War era. Utilizing a concept I call provocative counterorganization—that is, provocation of individual and communal fear, intercommunal conflict, and ethnosectarian discord by national security states in order to refashion a population's dissent against the state—I show how provocative counterorganizational strategies work to inform and shape dissent by provoking counterviolence and ethnosectarian discord. The novel pyridine bearing schiff base substituted metal-free (9), zinc(II) phthalocyanine (10), and its quaternized derivative (11) were designed and synthesized. These phthalocyanines were fully characterized by spectroscopic methods (FT-IR, UV–Vis, MALDI-TOF, and 1 H NMR). To treat a life-threatening disease like cancer, photodynamic therapy (PDT) and sonodynamic therapy (SDT) methods were combined into sono-photodynamic therapy (SPDT) as an effective therapeutic solution. Each day, the usage of phthalocyanine sensitizers increases in the therapeutic applications as they have the ability to produce more reactive oxygen species. In this context, a new diaxially silicon phthalocyanine sensitizer, containing triazole and tert-butyl groups, was synthesized. After elucidating the structure of the complex with elemental analysis, FT-IR, UV-Vis, MALDI-TOF MS and 1 H NMR, its photophysical, photochemical and sono-photochemical properties were examined. When singlet oxygen generation capacity of the new synthesized silicon phthalocyanine complex was determined and compared among photochemical (PDT; Ф Δ  = 0.59 in DMSO, 0.44 in THF, 0.47 in toluene) and sonophotochemical (SPDT; Ф Δ  = 0.88 in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), 0.60 in tetrahydrofuran (THF), 0.65 in toluene) methods, it can be said that the complex is a successful sono-photosensitizer that can be used as a good SPDT agent in vitro or in vivo future studies., (© 2023 The Authors. Fluorescent chemosensors are highly valuable in a variety of fields including environmental chemistry, analytical chemistry and biomedical science. They have provided accurate, online and low-cost detection of toxic heavy metal ions, anions and enzymes with high selectivity and sensitivity. Coumarins, with the structure of benzopyrone, have many advantages including high fluorescence quantum yield, large Stokes shift, excellent light stability and less toxicity. By far coumarin has been used as fluorescent probes of pH, for detection of nitric oxide, nitroxide and hydrogen peroxide. Moreover, coumarin derivatives have served as good chemosensors of anions including cyanide, fluoride, pyrophosphate, acetate, benzoate and dihydrogenphosphate as well as various metal ions comprised of Hg(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Ni(II), Ca(II), Pb(II), Mg(II), Fe(III), Al(III), Cr(III) and Ag(I). Several systems containing coumarin exhibited simultaneous sensitivity toward two or more different metal ions, e.g., Ca(II) and Mg(II), Ni(II) and Co(II), Cu(II) and Hg(II), Na(I) and K(I), Cu(II) and Ni(II), Hg(II) and Ag(I), Cu(II)/Ni(II)/Cd(II), Zn(II)/Cd(II)/Pb(II) or Ni(II)/Pd(II)/Ag(I). The sensing approach toward the ion has been discussed in detail along their detection limit to find the efficacy of the probe easier. Recently, scientists have been working on synthesizing novel fluorescence chemosensors with multiple-ion recognition ability to make the fluorescence sensing more effective and prolific. Peroxynitrite anion (ONOO−) is an important in vivo oxidative stress biomarker whose aberrant levels have pathophysiological implications. In this study, an electrochemical sensor for ONOO− detection was developed based on graphene nanoplatelets-cerium oxide nanocomposite (GNP-CeO2) incorporated polyaniline (PANI) conducting hydrogels. The nanocomposite-hydrogel platform exhibited distinct synergistic advantages in terms of large electroactive surface coverage and providing a conductive pathway for electron transfer. Besides, the 3D porous structure of hydrogel integrated the GNP-CeO2 nanocomposite to provide hybrid materials for the evolution of catalytic activity towards electrochemical oxidation of ONOO−. Various microscopic and spectroscopic characterization techniques endorsed the successful formation of GNP-CeO2-PANI hydrogel. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements of GNP-CeO2-PANI hydrogel modified screen-printed electrodes (SPE) were carried out to record the current changes influenced by ONOO−. The prepared sensor demonstrated a significant dose-dependent increase in CV peak current within a linear range of 5–100 µM (at a potential of 1.12 V), and a detection limit of 0.14 with a sensitivity of 29.35 ± 1.4 μA μM−1. Further, a customized microfluidic flow system was integrated with the GNP-CeO2-PANI hydrogel modified SPE to enable continuous electrochemical detection of ONOO− at low sample volumes. The developed microfluidic electrochemical device demonstrated an excellent sensitivity towards ONOO− under optimal experimental conditions. Overall, the fabricated microfluidic device with hybrid hydrogels as electrochemical interfaces provides a reliable assessment of ONOO− levels. What is fascinating about Murat Isik's novel Wees onzichtbaar is that so many different groups of people greatly appreciate this book, from the juries of the literary prizes, to the literary-oriented readers in the countless reading clubs in the Netherlands, and from the viewers of the TV programs De leesclub van M. and Koffietijd, to the students and the booksellers. This article examines how the novel brings about that enthusiasm about Isik's storytelling and which narrative aspects could play a role in it. After the main storylines have been mapped, the storytelling perspective and some storytelling techniques are discussed. In addition, attention is paid to the novel Wees onzichtbaar as a 'coming of age' novel, in the broader perspective of multicultural diversity and cultural differences in a multicultural society. Nederlandstalige abstract Het fascinerende aan Murat Isiks roman Wees onzichtbaar is dat zoveel verschillende groepen mensen, zowel de jury's van literaire prijzen als de literair georiënteerde lezers in de talloze leesclubs in Nederland, de kijkers van de tv-programma's De leesclub van M. en Koffietijd, de studenten en de boekverkopers dit boek enorm waarderen. In dit artikel wordt onderzocht hoe de roman het enthousiasme over de vertelkunst van Isik teweegbrengt en welke narratieve aspecten daarin een rol kunnen spelen. Nadat de belangrijkste verhaallijnen in kaart zijn gebracht, worden het vertelperspectief en enkele verteltechnieken besproken. In this study, based on new designed and reported molecules with chemical formula of C13H13B2N, novel electrically and optically active oligomers with different size were suggested. It was shown that the suggested structures have no imaginary frequency and have high negative values of the cohesive energies which show feasibility of their formation. Additionally, increasing the numbers of unit in oligomers created the narrower values of Eg. Similar results were obtained in calculating the optical properties of oligomers using two different methods. Considerable improvements in optical properties of oligomers were observed by increasing numbers of units in their structures. The feasibility of formation of cyclic oligomers with 8 units was studied, and it was shown that formation of this structure is possible which has considerable optical properties. A noteworthy result is that the circular oligomer comprised 8 units has cup-like structure which is very attractive. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this report, promising carbon-based novel metal phthalocyanine catalysts were prepared and tested in glucose dehydration at low temperatures (90–130 °C) under atmospheric conditions. Most of the prepared phthalocyanines exhibited high conversions in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO). A complete conversion of glucose was obtained over Aluminum phthalocyanine (AlPcCl) and Tin phthalocyanine (SnPcCl2) catalysts. AlPcCl also provided the highest HMF yield (53% in 3 h at 130 °C). Al3+ cations promoted the glucose conversion and Cl− anions played an active role in 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) formation. Dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) as a solvent, was also found effective with phthalocyanines for high 5-HMF yield by stabilizing its structure. Thus, the 5-HMF yield was observed high (53.0% at 130 °C for 3 h) over AlPcCl in DMSO. Kinetic studies showed that the optimum reaction temperature was 130 °C at 1/5 catalyst/glucose ratio for 3 h. Dehydration reactions, performed in the aqueous phase, exhibited higher fructose selectivities with AlPcCl catalyst. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this research, the BODIPY molecule was selected; and based on its structure, using a different number of BODIPY molecules connected to each other, novel oligomers with significant electrical and optical properties were designed. After structural optimization, the frequency analysis and cohesive energy calculations were done to ensure the oligomers' stability. The electronic properties of the designed oligomers were studied; and it was shown that by increasing the numbers of BODIPY molecules in designed structures, their Eg was narrowed. Finally, it was shown that by increasing the numbers of BODIPY molecules in oligomers, a great improvement in optical properties such as increasing the number of absorption lines and intensity of them was observed. Among the designed oligomers, two di- and tri-BODIPY molecules have substantial optical properties with intense absorption lines in visible and near-infrared regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
