The Court and the Country (1969) offers a fresh view and synthesis of the English revolution of 1640. It describes the origin and development of the revolution, and gives an account of the various factors – political, social and religious – that produced the revolution and conditioned its course. It explains the revolution primarily as a result of the breakdown of the unity of the governing class around the monarchy into the contending sides of the Court and the Country. A principal theme is the formation within the governing class of an opposition movement to the Crown. The role of Puritanism and of the towns is examined, and the resistance to Charles I is considered in relation to other European revolutions of the period.

The common saying was that “the sun never sets on the British Empire.” What began as a largely entrepreneurial enterprise in the early modern period, with privately run joint stock trading companies such as the East India Company driving British commercial expansion, by the nineteenth century had become, especially after 1857, a state-run endeavour, supported by a powerful military and navy. By the Victorian era, Britannia really did rule the waves.Heroes and Villains of the British Empire is the story of how British Empire builders such as Robert Clive, General Gordon, and Lord Roberts of Kandahar were represented and idealised in popular culture. The men who built the empire were often portrayed as possessing certain unique abilities which enabled them to serve their country in often inhospitable territories and spread what imperial ideologues saw as the benefits of the British Empire to supposedly uncivilised peoples in far flung corners of the world. These qualities and abilities were athleticism, a sense of fair play, devotion to God, and a fervent sense of duty and loyalty to the nation and the empire. Through the example of these heroes, people in Britain, and children in particular, were encouraged to sign up and serve the empire or, in the words of Henry Newbolt, “Play up! Play up! And Play the Game!”Yet this was not the whole story: while some writers were paid up imperial propagandists, other writers in England detested the very idea of the British Empire. And in the twentieth century, those who were once considered as heroic military men were condemned as racist rulers and exploitative empire builders.

The fact that most of the contributors to Charles Dickens's first periodical, Household Words (published from 1850 to 1859), were anonymous has meant that in some highly important respects the character of the publication has been hidden. Using as a basis the Household Words Office Book (in the Morris L. Parrish collection of Victorian Novelists in the Princeton University Library), Miss Lohrli has provided a table of contents to the nineteen volumes of Household Words, a list of the contributors with their contributions, and a title index to the more than 3,000 items, prose and verse, published during the nine years of the periodical's existence. She has also identified a large number of the contributors and unearthed biographical information about them from a variety of sources. Among the 390 men and women included in the list of contributors, such writers as Wilkie Collins, George Augustus Sala, Elizabeth Gaskell, and Adelaide Procter occupy a prominent place. THere also appear names of persons rarely -- or never -- mention in connection with Dickens's periodical: the colonial journalist John Cappter, the miscellaneous writer (and divine) Edmund Saul Dixon, the pioneer settler in Australia John Pascoe Fawkner, the forgotten poetess Mary Jane Tomkins, the son and daughter of Thomas Hood, the sister of Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, the widow of Sydney Smith, and foreign contributors -- American, German, Belgian, Italian, Polish, and Hungarian. The contributors are described with respect to educational background, professional training, work published, and their relations with Dickens.
