3. Aquinas’s Understanding of Religion

Thomas Aquinas emerges as a remarkable figure whose significant literary contributions have had a profound impact on our understanding of religion. Drawing inspiration from both the Greco-Roman philosophical and legal traditions, particularly the influential works of Cicero and the rich Christian tradition, notably Augustine, Aquinas presents a comprehensive and nuanced approach to the multifaceted concept of ‘religion’. While his analysis often situates ‘religion’ within the moral framework of justice, highlighting its inherent concern with the relationship between humanity and the divine, Aquinas goes beyond mere moral principles in his exploration. His aim is to establish a universal understanding of ‘religion’, offering a well-defined definition and presenting a philosophical and theological doctrine. In this paper, we shall first delve into the foundations and underlying principles that shaped Aquinas’s interpretation of religion. Next, we will undertake a thorough examination of religion as a virtue, highlighting Aquinas’s emphasis on its intrinsic connection to justice rather than confining it to the realm of religious sentiment, piety, or devotion. Finally, our research will explore the specific terminologies employed by Aquinas to elucidate the concept of religion, providing a comprehensive and nuanced approach to the ongoing discourse on this topic. Aquinas’s contribution rests in his defence of religion’s inherent public nature, grounded in its anthropological foundation and its virtuous essence.

The purpose of this paper is to analyse John Anthony Berry's publication called Yves Congar's Vision of Faith, and to highlight its main contributions in the fi eld. Since Yves Congar was among those who were called to prepare the Second Vatican Council, his writings, too, belong to the sources through which one can discover the origins, purpose, as well as the immediate and long-term eff ects of the Council's teaching. So far, no specific work dedicated to Congar's concept of faith has been published, although Congar himself, being a teacher, was directly concerned with revelation and faith. If faith is the core and the heart of Christian life, then the publication by Berry can also shed light on the core of Congar's theology and become an inspiration for the study and reflection on the ideas of both Y. Congar and those of the documents of the Second Vatican Council. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The composition of the human person is a central issue for Augustine. He addresses it in a philosophico-theological way; particularly in The Soliloquies and in The Confessions. What is at stake here is his exposition of “what” constitutes a person’s being human. This paper refers to some of his key ideas in this regard and attempts to identify and establish what this great thinker understands by specific terminology: the soul, the mind, and the self. His hunger for knowledge of the self helps his readers to ponder on the shifting emphasis between interiority and exteriority as well as a person’s consciousness and selfhood. Augustine wrestles with the concept of the soul, but at no point does he minimise the role of the intellect. After examining four definitions given by Augustine of the human person, this paper attempts to clarify all underpinnings related to this subject, as to be able to answer the topic in question.

For Thomas Aquinas, the imagination, being one of the “inner senses”, is a doorway to attain true knowledge. In this paper, we first analyze his lexicon in this regard (imaginatio and phantasia). Second, we discuss imagination as the subject matter of the intellectual virtues, which facilitate cognition and judgment. The development of imagination is the foundation of his vision of education not only on the natural but also on the supernatural level. Third, we explore Aquinas’ moral assessment of imaginative art and finally its influence on shaping the character. This influence occurs on two levels: it is assessed from the perspective of charity, justice, prudence and purity, namely to what extent the art serves these values, whereas the second criterion is beauty.

Lebendige Tradition Kontinuität und Wandel als Herausforderungen für Kirchen und Theologien Tagungsbericht der 21. Wissenschaftlichen Konsultation der Societas Oecumenica Living Tradition Continuity and Change as Challenges to Churches and Theologies Proceedings of the 21st Academic Consultation of the Societas Oecumenica Living tradition is the focal point of this volume, exploring ›theologies of tradition,‹ ›captivities of tradition,‹ ›changing traditions,‹ and ›dynamics of Tradition.‹ It takes on the notion of ›living tradition‹ from four distinct angles. How do various churches and denominations handle continuity while embracing different theologies of tradition? How do individuals address traditionalism and fundamentalism when faced with the captivities of tradition? In what ways can identity be preserved through discontinuities when dealing with changing traditions? The volume encompasses contributions from 31 scholars, presented during the 21st academic consultation of Societas Oecumenica (the European Society for Ecumenical Research). [Lebendige Tradition.

In our present times, a search for widespread certainty over a sound understanding of ecumenism must be acknowledged. While questions on the vision for communion among the Christian churches or on the commitment to witness and to social justice are more than justified, the appeal to “turn to God” reverberates strongly throughout the witness of (ecumenical) prophets today as it did in the past. Although a real process of entering into spiritual communion with one another takes time to happen until it becomes real and visible, ecumenism must continually start afresh from God. Ecumenism is above all God’s will that “all may be one” (John 17:21). All human efforts in the ecumenical movement are to find their origin and inspiration from God alone. The aim of this paper is a modest one. It seeks to place all ecumenical discourse in the light of the mystery of God who is the source of communion. In this light, recent discourse on reception, recognition, and spirituality should be grounded in God’s very nature and call to become one in him. This article features four main steps: 1. to contextualise the quest for Christian unity in postmodern times, 2. to emphasise the necessity of a relationship between ecumenism and Christian mysticism, 3. to learn from central concepts of the mysticism of the Church Fathers, and 4. to reconfigure ecumenism on prayer, trust and hospitality., peer-reviewed

Pope Francis’ double-invitation to embrace God’s love and to be its witnesses requires human beings to have a spiritual readiness that reflects the grammar and the logic of being Christian. This paper aims to re-propose a fresh discourse on Christian witness. This is particularly imperative in the light of recent acts of heroic witness of those Christians who courageously stand up to hatred, even when it means giving up their lives. This paper proceeds in three steps. First, there is a contextualisation of Christian witness with an emphasis on the need to appreciate the fullness and the meaning of the Christian faith. Secondly, the paper sets out to discuss the grammar of witness particularly in the light of the Gospel of John. Lastly, there follows a presentation of the logic of being Christian despite often described as folly by those who have not yet know to know of God’s love in real terms. Becoming Christian witnesses is a demanding process, which whenever undertaken, it leads the Christian to be a living-expression of God’s unconditional love to all.

- Abstract
The papers of the 12th Comenius Conference titled »Imago Dei« (20–23 April 2022, Pápa Reformed Theological Seminary, Hungary) discussed especially the question what it means to be human. Are we just biological beings, not substantially different from other living beings? Or are we created in the image of God, having a special value and dignity over all creatures? The special place of humankind in creation is often recognized in the ability of (abstract) thinking, speaking, creativity. However, can rationality define humans and set them apart from other creatures? How can we communicate the rule of God, or the responsibility and accountability of humankind toward the Creator and the people of modern ages? [Imago Dei.
