- Abstract
Background: Previous investigations have established the anti-inflammatory properties of fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21). However, the specific mechanism through which FGF21 mitigates myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury by inhibiting neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) remains unclear., Methods: A mice model of myocardial I/R injury was induced, and myocardial tissue was stained with immunofluorescence to assess NETs. Serum NETs levels were quantified using a PicoGreen kit. In addition, the expression levels of adenosine monophosphate (AMP)-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and FGF21 were evaluated by Wes fully automated protein blotting quantitative analysis system. Moreover, a hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R) model was established using AMPK inhibitor and agonist pretreated H9c2 cells to further explore the relationship between FGF21 and AMPK., Results: Compared with the control group, serum NETs levels were significantly higher in I/R mice, and a large number of NETs were formed in myocardial tissues (97.63 ± 11.45 vs. 69.65 ± 3.33, P < 0.05). However, NETs levels were reversed in FGF21 pretreated mice (P < 0.05). Further studies showed that FGF21 enhanced AMPK expression, which was significantly increased after inhibition of AMPK and decreased after promotion of AMPK (P < 0.05)., Conclusions: FGF21 may exert cardioprotective effects by inhibiting I/R injury-induced NETs via AMPK., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no conflict of interest., (Copyright 2024, Gu et al.)

- Abstract
Introduction: Cardiac hypertrophy is an important contributor of heart failure, and the mechanisms remain unclear. Leucine zipper protein 1 (LUZP1) is essential for the development and function of cardiovascular system; however, its role in cardiac hypertrophy is elusive., Objectives: This study aims to investigate the molecular basis of LUZP1 in cardiac hypertrophy and to provide a rational therapeutic approach., Methods: Cardiac-specific Luzp1 knockout (cKO) and transgenic mice were established, and transverse aortic constriction (TAC) was used to induce pressure overload-induced cardiac hypertrophy. The possible molecular basis of LUZP1 in regulating cardiac hypertrophy was determined by transcriptome analysis. Neonatal rat cardiomyocytes were cultured to elucidate the role and mechanism of LUZP1 in vitro., Results: LUZP1 expression was progressively increased in hypertrophic hearts after TAC surgery. Gain- and loss-of-function methods revealed that cardiac-specific LUZP1 deficiency aggravated, while cardiac-specific LUZP1 overexpression attenuated pressure overload-elicited hypertrophic growth and cardiac dysfunction in vivo and in vitro. Mechanistically, the transcriptome data identified Stat3 pathway as a key downstream target of LUZP1 in regulating pathological cardiac hypertrophy. Cardiac-specific Stat3 deletion abolished the pro-hypertrophic role in LUZP1 cKO mice after TAC surgery. Further findings suggested that LUZP1 elevated the expression of Src homology region 2 domain-containing phosphatase 1 (SHP1) to inactivate Stat3 pathway, and SHP1 silence blocked the anti-hypertrophic effects of LUZP1 in vivo and in vitro., Conclusion: We demonstrate that LUZP1 attenuates pressure overload-induced cardiac hypertrophy through inhibiting Stat3 signaling, and targeting LUZP1 may develop novel approaches to treat pathological cardiac hypertrophy., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2024. - Abstract
Objectives: Baker's cyst (BC) is a complex complication of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), with a poor prognosis. This paper aimed to analyze the clinical features and risk factors for BC in patients with RA to assist clinicians in early warning and appropriate action., Methods: The Clinical features of hospitalized RA patients with knee affected were analyzed retrospectively. The R software was used for the statistical analysis, while logistic regression analyses were used to determine independent risk factors., Results: A total of 367 RA patients with knee affected were studied, and BC was diagnosis in 15.3% of them. The BC group exhibited a higher proportion of knee-only affected than the non-BC group (p < 0.05), while the attributes linked to disease activity exhibited no disparity. Logistic regression analyses selected two independent risk factors for BC: knee-only affected and anemia. 26.8% of patients with BC developed rupture, exhibiting a higher proportion of knee-only affected (p < 0.05), compared to those unruptured., Conclusions: The occurrence and rupture of BC in RA patients were significantly related to local inflammation, but not to systemic one. Incorporating local treatment may be a more advantageous option compared to solely relying on systemic therapy., (© Japan College of Rheumatology 2024. Published by Oxford University Press. - Abstract
Background: The association between tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) levels and the response to neoadjuvant therapy (NAT) in patients with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) remains unclear., Aim: To investigate the predictive potential of TIL levels for the response to NAT in TNBC patients., Methods: A systematic search of the National Center for Biotechnology Information PubMed database was performed to collect relevant published literature prior to August 31, 2023. The correlation between TIL levels and the NAT pathologic complete response (pCR) in TNBC patients was assessed using a systematic review and meta-analysis. Subgroup analysis, sensitivity analysis, and publication bias analysis were also conducted., Results: A total of 32 studies were included in this meta-analysis. The overall meta-analysis results indicated that the pCR rate after NAT treatment in TNBC patients in the high TIL subgroup was significantly greater than that in patients in the low TIL subgroup (48.0% vs 27.7%) (risk ratio 2.01; 95% confidence interval 1.77-2.29; P < 0.001, I
2 = 56%). Subgroup analysis revealed that the between-study heterogeneity originated from differences in study design, TIL level cutoffs, and study populations. Publication bias could have existed in the included studies. The meta-analysis based on different NAT protocols revealed that all TNBC patients with high levels of TILs had a greater rate of pCR after NAT treatment in all protocols (all P ≤ 0.01), and there was no significant between-protocol difference in the statistics among the different NAT protocols ( P = 0.29). Additionally, sensitivity analysis demonstrated that the overall results of the meta-analysis remained consistent when the included studies were individually excluded., Conclusion: TILs can serve as a predictor of the response to NAT treatment in TNBC patients. TNBC patients with high levels of TILs exhibit a greater NAT pCR rate than those with low levels of TILs, and this predictive capability is consistent across different NAT regimens., Competing Interests: Conflict-of-interest statement: The authors deny any conflict of interest., (©The Author(s) 2024. - Abstract
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is marked by hepatic steatosis accompanied by an inflammatory response. At present, there are no approved therapeutic agents for NAFLD. Dendrobium Huoshanense polysaccharide (DHP), an active ingredient extracted from the stems of Dendrobium Huoshanense , and exerts a protective effect against liver injury. However, the therapeutic effects and mechanisms of action DHP against NAFLD remain unclear. DHP was extracted, characterized, and administered to mice in which NAFLD had been induced with a high-fat and high-fructose drinking (HFHF) diet. Our results showed that DHP used in this research exhibits the characteristic polysaccharide peak with a molecular weight of 179.935 kDa and is composed primarily of Man and Glc in a molar ratio of 68.97:31.03. DHP treatment greatly ameliorated NAFLD by significantly reducing lipid accumulation and the levels of liver function markers in HFHF-induced NAFLD mice, as evidenced by decreased serum levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), total cholesterol (TC) and total triglyceride (TG). Furthermore, DHP administration reduced hepatic steatosis, as shown by H&E and Oil red O staining. DHP also inhibited the Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)/nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathway expression, thereby reducing levels of hepatic proinflammatory cytokines. Besides, untargeted metabolomics further indicated that 49 metabolites were affected by DHP. These metabolites are strongly associated the metabolism of glycine, serine, threonine, nicotinate and nicotinamide, and arachidonic acid. In conclusion, DHP has a therapeutic effect against NAFLD, whose underlying mechanism may involve the modulation of TLR4/NF-κB, reduction of inflammation, and regulation of the metabolism of glycine, serine, threonine, nicotinate and nicotinamide metabolism, and arachidonic acid metabolism., Competing Interests: The authors declare that the research was conducted in the absence of any commercial or financial relationships that could be construed as a potential conflict of interest., (Copyright © 2024 Deng, Zhao, Cai, Zhang, Ma, Lv, Jiang, Peng, Wang, Xing and Yu.)

- Abstract
In addition to the classical resistance mechanisms, receptor tyrosine-protein kinase AXL is a main mechanism of resistance to third-generation epidermal growth factor receptor-tyrosine kinase inhibitor (EGFR-TKI) osimertinib in EGFR-mutated non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Developing an effective AXL inhibitor is important to sensitize osimertinib in clinical application. In this study we assessed the efficacy of brigatinib, a second-generation of anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)-TKI, as a novel AXL inhibitor, in overcoming acquired resistance to osimertinib induced by AXL activation. We established an AXL-overexpression NSCLC cell line and conducted high-throughput screening of a small molecule chemical library containing 510 anti-tumor drugs. We found that brigatinib potently inhibited AXL expression, and that brigatinib (0.5 μM) significantly enhanced the anti-tumor efficacy of osimertinib (1 μM) in AXL-mediated osimertinib-resistant NSCLC cell lines in vitro. We demonstrated that brigatinib had a potential ability to bind AXL kinase protein and further inhibit its downstream pathways in NSCLC cell lines. Furthermore, we revealed that brigatinib might decrease AXL expression through increasing K48-linked ubiquitination of AXL and promoting AXL degradation in HCC827OR cells and PC-9OR cells. In AXL-high expression osimertinib-resistant PC-9OR and HCC827OR cells derived xenograft mouse models, administration of osimertinib (10 mg·kg
-1 ·d-1 ) alone for 3 weeks had no effect, and administration of brigatinib (25 mg·kg-1 ·d-1 ) alone caused a minor inhibition on the tumor growth; whereas combination of osimertinib and brigatinib caused marked tumor shrinkages. We concluded that brigatinib may be a promising clinical strategy for enhancing osimertinib efficacy in AXL-mediated osimertinib-resistant NSCLC patients., (© 2024. - Abstract
Background: Patients rarely develop complicated infections in thyroid cysts. Here, we describe a patient with chronic infected unilateral giant thyroid cyst related to diabetes mellitus (DM)., Case Summary: A 66-year-old male was admitted due to an evident neck lump for 5 d after approximately 40 years of gradually progressive neck mass and 7 years of DM. Doppler ultrasound and computed tomography scan showed a giant lump in the left thyroid gland lobe. He was diagnosed with a large thyroid nodule complicated by tracheal dislocation and had surgical indications. Surgical exploration revealed evident inflammatory edema and exudation between the left anterior neck muscles, the nodule and glandular tissue. Fortunately, inflammatory lesions did not affect major neck vessels. Finally, a left partial thyroidectomy was performed. Macroscopic observation showed that the cystic thyroid mass consisted of extensive cystic wall calcification and was rich in massive rough sand-like calculi content and purulent matter. Postoperative pathology confirmed benign thyroid cyst with chronic infection., Conclusion: The progression of this chronic infectious unilateral giant thyroid cyst may have been related to DM, and identifying blood vessels involvement can prevent serious complications during operation., Competing Interests: Conflict-of-interest statement: All authors have no conflicts of interest to declare., (©The Author(s) 2024. - Abstract
In this study, we designed and synthesized three conformation-adaptive Pd
2 L4 - and Pd3 L6 -type coordination cages based on three dihydrophenazine-based ligands with different lengths. Interestingly, the shorter ligands L1 and L2 self-assembled into Pd2 L4 -type coordination cages while the longer ligand L3 formed Pd3 L6 -type one, mainly driven by the anion template effect. All coordination cages were confirmed through single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and their structural conformations underwent great changes compared with those of their corresponding ligands. Moreover, the conformational changes also significantly affected their photophysical and electrochemical properties which were distinct from their parent ligands.- Published

- Abstract
Mpox, a novel epidemic disease, has broken out the period of coronavirus disease 2019 since May 2022, which was caused by the mpox virus. Up to 12 September 2023, there are more than 90,439 confirmed mpox cases in over 115 countries all over the world. Moreover, the outbreak of mpox in 2022 was verified to be Clade II rather than Clade I. Highlighting the significance of this finding, a growing body of literature suggests that mpox may lead to a series of cardiovascular complications, including myocarditis and pericarditis. It is indeed crucial to acquire more knowledge about mpox from a perspective from the clinical cardiologist. In this review, we would discuss the epidemiological characteristics and primary treatments of mpox to attempt to provide a framework for cardiovascular physicians., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2023 Elsevier Inc. - Abstract
Hydroxyl radical production via catalytic activation of HOCl is a new type of Fenton-like process. However, metal-chlorocomplex formation under high chloride conditions could deactivate the catalyst and reduce the process efficiency. Herein, in situ electrogenerated HOCl was activated to
• OH via a metal-free, B/N-codoped carbon nanofiber cathode for the first time to degrade contaminant under high chloride condition. The results show 98% degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) within 120 min ( k = 0.036 min-1 ) under sulfate conditions, while complete degradation ( k = 0.188 min-1 ) was obtained in only 30 min under chloride conditions. An enhanced degradation mechanism consists of an Adsorb & Shuttle process , wherein adsorption concentrates the pollutants at the cathode surface and they are subsequently oxidized by the large amount of• OH produced via activation of HOCl and H2 O2 at the cathode. Density functional theory calculations verify the pyridinic N as the active site for the activation of HOCl and H2 O2 . The process efficiency was also evaluated by treating tetracycline and bisphenol A as well as high chloride-containing real secondary effluents from a pesticide manufacturing plant. High yields of• OH and HOCl allow continuous regeneration of the cathode for several cycles, limiting its fast deactivation, which is promising for real application.- Published

Background: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy and safety of blonanserin and risperidone for the treatment of schizophrenia and to provide reliable pharmacotherapeutic evidence for in the clinical treatment of schizophrenia., Methods: We systematically searched the PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases for head-to-head randomized controlled trials that compared blonanserin with risperidone for the treatment of schizophrenia. We extracted the following data: author, year, country, diagnostic criteria, sample size, course of treatment, dosage and outcomes. Our main endpoint was the changes in the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) total scores. Meta-analysis of the included data was conducted by RevMan 5.3 software. We used the GRADE criteria to evaluate the certainty of the evidence., Results: A total of 411 studies were initially; 8 trials were eligible and were included in our analysis (N = 1386 participants). Regarding efficacy, there was no difference in changes in the PANSS total scores between the two groups (P > 0.05). In terms of safety, compared to risperidone, the incidence of serum prolactin increases and weight gain in the blonanserin group was lower (P<0.05), but the incidence of extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS) was higher (P<0.05)., Conclusion: The efficacy of blonanserin is similar to that of risperidone, but it is unclear whether blonanserin is more effective than risperidone at improving cognitive and social function. More high-quality studies are needed to verify the efficacy and safety of blonanserin in the future., (© 2023. BioMed Central Ltd., part of Springer Nature.)

- Abstract
Objectives: Type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM) and hypertension(HTN) are common comorbidities, and known to affect the brain. However, little is known about the effects of the coexisting HTN on brain in T2DM patients. So we aim to investigate the impact of HTN on the subcortical nucleus morphological alternations in T2DM patients., Materials & Methods: This work was registered by the clinicaltrials.gov (grant number NCT03564431). We recruited a total of 92 participants, comprising 36 only T2DM patients, 28 T2DM patients with HTN(T2DMH) and 28 healthy controls(HCs) in our study. All clinical indicators were assessed and brain image data was collected for each participant. Voxel-based morphometry(VBM), automatic volume and vertex-based shape analyses were used to determine the subcortical nucleus alternations from each participant's 3D-T1 brain images and evaluate the relationship between the alternations and clinical indicators., Results: T2DMH patients exhibited volumetric reduction and morphological alterations in thalamus compared to T2DM patients, whereas T2DM patients did not demonstrate any significant subcortical alterations compared to HCs. Furthermore, negative correlations have been found between thalamic alternations and the duration of HTN in T2DMH patients., Conclusion: Our results revealed that HTN may exacerbate subcortical nucleus alternations in T2DM patients, which highlighted the importance of HTN management in T2DM patients to prevent further damage to the brain health., Competing Interests: The authors declare that the research was conducted in the absence of any commercial or financial relationships that could be construed as a potential conflict of interest., (Copyright © 2023 Cui, Ouyang, Zeng, Ling, Shi, Zhu, Gu, Jiang, Zhou, Sun, Han and Lu.)

- Abstract
Objective: This meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) was conducted to explore the therapeutic effects, tolerability and safety of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) as an adjunct treatment in adolescents with first-episode major depressive disorder (FE-MDD)., Methods: RCTs examining the efficacy, tolerability and safety of adjunctive rTMS for adolescents with FE-MDD were included. Data were extracted by three independent authors and synthesized using RevMan 5.3 software with a random effects model., Results: A total of six RCTs involving 562 adolescents with FE-MDD were included. Adjunctive rTMS was superior in improving depressive symptoms over the control group [standardized mean difference (SMD) = -1.50, 95% confidence interval (CI): -2.16, -0.84; I
2 = 89%, p < 0.00001] in adolescents with FE-MDD. A sensitivity analysis and two subgroup analyses also confirmed the significant findings. Adolescents with FE-MDD treated with rTMS had significantly greater response [risk ratio (RR) = 1.35, 95% CI: 1.04, 1.76; I2 = 56%, p = 0.03] and remission (RR = 1.35, 95% CI: 1.03, 1.77; I2 = 0%, p = 0.03) over the control group. All-cause discontinuations were similar between the two groups (RR = 0.79, 95% CI: 0.32, 1.93; I2 = 0%, p = 0.60). No significant differences were found regarding adverse events, including headache, loss of appetite, dizziness and nausea ( p = 0.14-0.82). Four out of six RCTs (66.7%), showed that adjunctive rTMS was more efficacious over the control group in improving neurocognitive function (all p < 0.05)., Conclusion: Adjunctive rTMS appears to be a beneficial strategy in improving depressive symptoms and neurocognitive function in adolescents with FE-MDD. Higher quality RCTs with larger sample sizes and longer follow-up periods are warranted in the future., Competing Interests: The authors declare that the research was conducted in the absence of any commercial or financial relationships that could be construed as a potential conflict of interest., (Copyright © 2023 Sun, Mai, Shi, Zheng, Jiang, Li, Huang, Yang and Zheng.)- Published

Peri-Coronary Adipose Tissue (PCAT) was an indicator to detect the coronary inflammation. We aimed to analyze the PCAT characteristics of Right Coronary Artery (RCA) with or without plaque using texture analysis by Coronary Computed Tomography Angiography (CCTA). This article was a retrospective case-control study. In total, 67 patients with coronary artery disease were enrolled from December 2018 to September 2019. The patients were divided into two groups according to whether there are plaques existing at the RCA vessels. The radiomic features of RCA vessels calculated on the PCAT regions between groups were compared using Mann-Whitney U test. Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve (ROC) analysis was performed to evaluate the performance of each significant features to differentiate the group with or without plaques. 43 patients without RCA plaque and 24 patients with RCA plaque were included in the study. 1218 radiomic features were finally calculated, among which wavelet-based texture features were more significantly different between RCA plaque group and RCA non-plaque group. Furthermore, wavelet_LLL_ firstorder_Maximum had the highest Area Under Curve (AUC) 0.78. Therefore, PCAT texture analysis is expected to be used as a new detection method to determine the existence of coronary artery disease.

- Abstract
Background: Inferior oblique anterior transposition (IOAT) has emerged as an effective surgery in the management of dissociated vertical deviation (DVD) combined with superior oblique palsy (SOP). Traditional IOAT usually provides satisfactory primary position alignment and simultaneously restricts the superior floating phenomenon. However, it also increases the risk of the anti-elevation syndrome and narrowing of the palpebral fissure in straight-ahead gaze, especially after the unilateral operation., Case Summary: We report the outcomes of the modified unilateral IOAT in two patients with unilateral DVD combined with SOP. The anterior-nasal fibers of the inferior oblique muscle were attached at 9 mm posterior to the corneal limbus along the temporal board of the inferior rectus muscle, the other fibers were attached a further 5 mm temporal to the anterior-nasal fibers. Postoperatively, both hypertropia and floating were improved, and no obvious complications occurred., Conclusion: In these cases, the modified unilateral IOAT was an effective and safe surgical method for treating DVD with SOP., Competing Interests: Conflict-of-interest statement: All the authors report no relevant conflicts of interest for this article., (©The Author(s) 2023. - Abstract
An important way to promote the environmental industry's goal of carbon reduction is to promote the recycling of resources. Membrane separation technology has unique advantages in resource recovery and advanced treatment of industrial wastewater. However, the great promise of traditional organic membrane is hampered by challenges associated with organic solvent tolerance, lack of oxidation resistance, and serious membrane fouling control. Moreover, the high concentrations of organic matter and inorganic salts in the membrane filtration concentrate also hinder the wider application of the membrane separation technology. The emerging cost-effective graphene oxide (GO)-based membrane with excellent resistance to organic solvents and oxidants, more hydrophilicity, lower membrane fouling, better separation performance has been expected to contribute more in industrial wastewater treatment. Herein, we provide comprehensive insights into the preparation and characteristic of GO membranes, as well as current research status and problems related to its future application in industrial wastewater treatment. Finally, concluding remarks and future perspectives have been deduced and recommended for the GO membrane separation technology application for industrial wastewater treatment, which leads to realizing sustainable wastewater recycling and a nearly "zero discharge" water treatment process., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2023 Elsevier Inc. - Abstract
Background and Objective: The mitochondrion is a crucial organelle for aerobic respiration and energy metabolism. It undergoes dynamic changes, including changes in its shape, function, and distribution through fission, fusion, and movement. Under normal conditions, mitochondrial dynamics are in homeostasis. However, once the balance is upset, the nervous system, which has high metabolic demands, will most likely be affected. Recent studies have shown that the imbalance of mitochondrial dynamics is involved in the occurrence and development of various neurological diseases. However, whether the regulation of mitochondrial dynamics can be used to treat neurological diseases is still unclear. We aimed to comprehensively analyze mitochondrial dynamics regulation and its potential role in the treatment of neurological diseases., Methods: A comprehensive literature review was carried out to understand the mechanisms and applications of mitochondrial dynamics in neurological diseases based on the literature available in PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar., Key Content and Findings: This review discusses the molecular mechanisms related to mitochondrial dynamics and expounds upon the role of mitochondrial dynamics in the occurrence and development of neurodegenerative diseases, epilepsy, cerebrovascular disease, and brain tumors. Several clinically tested drugs with fewer side effects have been shown to improve the mitochondrial dynamics and nervous system function in neurological diseases., Conclusions: Disorders of mitochondrial dynamics can cause various neurological diseases. Elucidation of mechanisms and applications involved in mitochondrial dynamics will inform the development of new therapeutic targets and strategies for neurological diseases. Dynamin-related protein 1 (Drp1), as a highly relevant molecular for mitochondrial dynamics, might be a potential target for treating neurological diseases in the future., Competing Interests: Conflicts of Interest: All authors have completed the ICMJE uniform disclosure form (available at https://atm.amegroups.com/article/view/10.21037/atm-22-2401/coif). - Abstract
The broad application prospect of fish gelatin makes the traceability and identification of fish gelatin imminent. High performance liquid chromatography and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) was used to identify fish gelatins in seven commercial cyprinid fishes, namely, black carp, grass carp, silver carp, bighead carp, common carp, crucian carp, and Wuchang bream. By comparison with theoretical mammalian collagen (bovine and porcine collagen), the common and unique theoretical peptides were found in the collagen of grass carp, silver carp, and crucian carp, respectively. HPLC-MS/MS results showed that 7 common characteristic peptides were obtained from seven cyprinid fish gelatins. Moreover, 44, 36, and 42 unique characteristic peptides were detected in the gelatins of grass carp, silver carp, and crucian carp, respectively. The combined use of common and unique characteristic peptides could improve the accuracy and authenticity of traceability and identification of fish gelatin in comparison with mammalian gelatin., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Ltd. - Abstract
Background: Heavy eye syndrome (HES) is an acquired strabismus typically seen in eyes with high myopia. We report a classic case in which a patient was misdiagnosed with esotropia and underwent disinsertion of the medial rectus muscle and lateral rectus muscle resection procedures., Case Summary: A 71-year-old woman presented with both eyes fixed in adduction and infraduction for 33 years. She had undergone three complicated strabismus surgeries to amputate the left medial rectus (MR) muscle with lateral rectus muscle recession, but no improvement in the esotropia appeared after each operation. She was diagnosed with HES and underwent a bilateral Yokoyama procedure and recession of the right MR muscle under general anesthesia. After surgery, her eyes were binocularly aligned for 6 mo. This case suggests that pertinacious esotropia combined with high myopia must be considered in HES. Orbital imaging and ultrasonography can demonstrate anatomical abnormality and muscle paths to confirm a definite diagnosis., Conclusion: The Yokoyama procedure was effective in correcting HES., Competing Interests: Conflict-of-interest statement: All authors declare that they have no conflict of interest., (©The Author(s) 2022. Background: Oesophageal replacement by colonic interposition remains a major challenge due to its complexity and high incidence of complications; here we applied the two-stage operation strategy to oesophageal replacement by colonic interposition in high-risk oesophageal cancer patients following gastrectomy., Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis on the data of patients with a history of distal gastrectomy who underwent one-stage and two-stage oesophageal replacement by colonic interposition from February 2012 to February 2020, and explored the relationship between the staging strategy and postoperative outcomes., Results: The clinical data of 93 patients were collected and analysed. There were no significant differences in the patients' characteristics between the two groups (all p > 0.05), except for comorbidities and Charlson Comorbidity Index (all p < 0.05). The Clavien-Dindo score between the two groups was also not significantly different (p > 0.05). The logistic regression models revealed that patients who had received preoperative therapy had a higher Clavien-Dindo score (p < 0.05), but the stage strategy did not (p > 0.05)., Conclusions: The two-stage operation is feasible in high-risk patients who need to undergo colonic interposition for oesophageal replacement. At the same time, it lowers the technical threshold of colonic interposition for oesophageal replacement, increasing this surgical technique's acceptability., (© 2022. Objective: Treatment-refractory auditory hallucinations (TRAH) in schizophrenia often do not improve with pharmacotherapy. We performed a meta-analysis of randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled clinical trials (RCTs) that systematically examined the therapeutic effects and tolerability of adjunctive active versus sham active transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) for auditory hallucinations as measured by the Auditory Hallucination Rating Scale (AHRS) in schizophrenia patients with TRAH., Methods: Relevant data were extracted, checked and analyzed using the Review Manager, Version 5.3 by three independent investigators., Results: Eight double-blind RCTs covering 329 schizophrenia patients (168 in active tDCS group, 161 in sham tDCS group) were included. Although no advantage of active tDCS on auditory hallucinations [7 RCTs, n = 224; standardized mean difference (SMD): - 0.33 (95% confidence interval (CI): - 0.71, 0.05), P = 0.09; I
2 = 46%] was found compared to sham, subgroup analyses revealed that active tDCS with twice-daily stimulation [6 RCTs, n = 198; SMD: - 0.42 (95%CI: -0.82, -0.02), P = 0.04; I2 = 44%] and active tDCS with ≥ 10 stimulation sessions [6 RCTs, n = 198; SMD: - 0.42 (95%CI: -0.82, -0.02), P = 0.04; I2 = 44%] showed a significantly better therapeutic effect than sham in improving auditory hallucinations symptoms. Meta-analyses of total psychopathology and discontinuation due to any reason were not significantly different between the active and sham tDCS groups., Conclusion: This meta-analysis demonstrated that the effects of tDCS for auditory hallucinations symptoms were influenced by the tDCS parameters. Twice-daily stimulation and ≥ 10 stimulation sessions may be needed to improve auditory hallucinations symptoms in schizophrenia with TRAH., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier B.V. Background: Thrombocytopenia was common in the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients during the infection, while the role of thrombocytopenia in COVID-19 pathogenesis and its relationship with systemic host response remained obscure. The study aimed to systematically evaluate the relationship between thrombocytopenia in COVID-19 patients and clinical, haematological and biochemical markers of the disease as well as adverse outcomes., Methods: To assess the relationship between abnormal platelet levels and disease progression, a multi-center retrospective cohort study was conducted. COVID-19 patients with thrombocytopenia and a sub-cohort of matched patients without thrombocytopenia were compared for their clinical manifestations, haematological disorders, biochemical parameters, inflammatory markers and clinical outcome., Results: Thrombocytopenia was present in 127 of 2,209 analyzed patients on admission. Compared with the control group, thrombocytopenia patients developed significantly higher frequency of respiratory failure (41.9% vs. 22.6%, P = 0.020), intensive care unit entrance (25.6% vs. 11.5%, P = 0.012), disseminated intravascular coagulation (45.2% vs. 10.6%, P < 0.001), more altered platelet morphology indexes and coagulation perturbation, higher levels of inflammatory markers. In addition, a significantly increased all-cause mortality (hazard ratio 3.08, 95% confidence interval 2.26-4.18, P < 0.001) was also observed in the patients with thrombocytopenia. Late development of thrombocytopenia beyond 14 days post-symptom was observed in 61 patients, from whom a comparable mortality rate yet longer duration to death was observed compared to those with early thrombocytopenia., Conclusions: Our finding from this study adds to previous evidence that thrombocytopenia is associated with adverse outcome of the disease and recommend that platelet count and indices be included alongside other haematological, biochemical and inflammatory markers in COVID-19 patients' assessment during the hospital stay., Competing Interests: The authors declare there are no competing interests., (©2022 Yuan et al.)

- Abstract
Autophagy plays a vital role in maintaining intracellular homeostasis through a lysosome-dependent intracellular degradation pathway, which is closely related to the polarity and ATP. Herein, the first example of the dual-response fluorescent probe Lyso-NRB was reported for visualizing the fluctuation of polarity and ATP in lysosomes during autophagy. Probe Lyso-NRB is non-fluorescent. After the decrease of polarity, Lyso-NRB exhibits significant green emission due to the unique intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) effect. Upon the addition of ATP, the probe can react with ATP to rapidly open the spirocycle of rhodamine and a strong red emission can be observed. Moreover, Lyso-NRB exhibits a high sensitivity and selectivity toward polarity and ATP. Most importantly, the probe possesses a good lysosome-targeting ability and is used for the real-time monitoring of lysosome polarity and ATP fluctuations during H
2 O2 or starvation induced autophagy in living cells. Interestingly, it is found that that ATP deficiency can induce autophagy to increase lysosome polarity. Furthermore, the probe is applied for imaging the change of polarity and ATP under oxidative stress induced autophagy in zebrafish. Therefore, this work holds great potential for tracking the autophagy procedure by detecting the changes of lysosome polarity and ATP, which makes it a potentially powerful tool for understanding the roles of autophagy in diverse biological processes.- Published

The presence of CNS symptoms could be predicted by abnormal laboratory tests across various clinical stages, including by lymphocyte counts of <0.93 × 10
9 /L, LDH≥435 U/L and IL-6≥28.83 pg/L at 0-10 days post disease; by lymphocyte count<0.86 × 109 /L, IL-2R ≥ 949 U/L, LDH≥382 U/L and WBC≥8.06 × 109 /L at 11-20 days post disease. More patients with CNS symptoms developed fatal outcome compared with patients without CNS symptoms (HR = 33.96, 95% CI 20.87-55.16)., Conclusion: Neurological symptoms of COVID-19 were related to increased odds of developing poor prognosis and even fatal infection., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declared that they have no conflicts of interest to this work., (Copyright © 2021. - Abstract
Carbon monoxide (CO), as one of significant gas transmitter, is closely associated with a variety of physiological and pathological processes. Although plenty of fluorescent probes have been prepared for detecting CO, most of them suffer from water-soluble fluorophores and short emission wavelength, which tends to diffuse and is limited to apply in vivo. Herein, a novel water-soluble fluorescent probe (HPQ-MQ-CO) is prepared to detect CO by releasing a precipitating fluorochrome (HPQ-MQ-OH), which is developed by introducing the 1-ethyl-2-methylquinoline group into HPQ to obtain long emission wavelength and good diffusion resistant ability. Allyl formate, as the identification unit of CO, has good water solubility and quenches the fluorescence of HPQ-MQ-CO. When the probe reacts with CO and Pd
2+ , an long-emission and solid-state fluorescence signal at 650 nm can be observed, which is based on excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) mechanism. When the concentration of CO is raised to 100.0 μM, the fluorescence is increased 29 times, indicating the sensitivity of the probe. Moreover, this probe shows prominent selectivity for CO compared with other interfering species. Given these advantages, HPQ-MQ-CO can be used for CO detection in HepG2 cells and zebrafish by in-situ and long-term fluorescence imaging. In addition, this probe can monitor the up-regulation of CO in HepG2 cells and zebrafish during drug-induced liver injury (DILI)., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.)- Published

Oct-4 protein levels were upregulated in gastric cancer tissues compared with adjacent noncancerous tissues. Results: Positive expression of Oct-4 correlated with age, depth of invasion, Lauren classification, lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis, and TNM stage. In stages I, II, and III, the 5-year survival rate of patients with high expression of Oct-4 was significantly lower than that in patients with low expression of Oct-4. In stage IV, Oct-4 expression did not correlate with the 5-year survival rate. Furthermore, multivariate analysis suggested that the depth of invasion, lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis, TNM stage, and upregulation of Oct-4 were independent prognostic factors of gastric cancer. Conclusion: Oct-4 protein is a useful marker in predicting tumor progression and prognosis. - Abstract
The ocean resources have been rapidly depleted in the recent decade, and the complementary role of aquaculture to food security has become more critical than ever before. Water quality is one of the key factors in determining the success of aquaculture and real-time water quality monitoring is an important process for aquaculture. This paper proposes a low-cost and easy-to-build artificial intelligence (AI) buoy system that autonomously measures the related water quality data and instantly forwards them via wireless channels to the shore server. Furthermore, the data provide aquaculture staff with real-time water quality information and also assists server-side AI programs in implementing machine learning techniques to further provide short-term water quality predictions. In particular, we aim to provide a low-cost design by combining simple electronic devices and server-side AI programs for the proposed buoy system to measure water velocity. As a result, the cost for the practical implementation is approximately USD 2015 only to facilitate the proposed AI buoy system to measure the real-time data of dissolved oxygen, salinity, water temperature, and velocity. In addition, the AI buoy system also offers short-term estimations of water temperature and velocity, with mean square errors of 0.021 °C and 0.92 cm/s, respectively. Furthermore, we replaced the use of expensive current meters with a flow sensor tube of only USD 100 to measure water velocity.

- Abstract
Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is an important biomolecule, which is the primary source of cellular energy. In particular, an abnormal metabolism of ATP level has been took part in many diseases, such as cancer. Thus, developing an effective fluorescent probe for tumor-targeting imaging of ATP is great importance for in-depth understanding the functions of ATP in tumor invasion and matastasis. In this work, we present the design and synthesis of a tumor-targeting near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent probe named Bio-SiR. Bio-SiR is mainly composed of three parts: si-rhodamine-based fluorophore, diethylenetriamine-based recognition group and biotin-based tumor-targetable group. When Bio-SiR reacts with ATP, a turn-on fluorescence at 675 nm (NIR region) is observed clearly, which is suitable for its application in mice. In addition, due to a concurrent effect from dual recognition sites, the probe Bio-SiR displays excellent selectivity for ATP over other potential biological analytes. Under the guidance of biotin group, Bio-SiR can be successfully used for imaging ATP in cancer cells. Furthermore, live-cell imaging allows us to directly real-time monitor the dynamic change of ATP in cancer cells. In particular, this is the first tumor-targeting NIR small-molecule fluorescent probe for endogenous ATP imaging in tumor-bearing mice. These features demonstrate that this probe is a useful imaging tool for expounding the function of ATP in cancer., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier B.V. Hydrogen sulfide (H
2 S) is an important endogenous gas signal molecule in living system, which participates in a variety of physiological processes. Very recent evidence has accumulated to show that endogenous H2 S is closely associated with various cancers and can be regarded as a biomarker of cancer. Herein, we have constructed a new near-infrared fluorescent probe (DCP-H2 S) based on isophorone-xanthene dye for sensing hydrogen sulfide (H2 S). The probe shows remarkable NIR turn-on signal at 770 nm with a large Stokes shift of 200 nm, together with high sensitivity (15-fold) and rapid detection ability for H2 S (4 min). The probe also possesses excellent selectivity for H2 S over various other analytes including biothiols containing sulfhydryl (-SH). Moreover, DCP-H2 S has been successfully applied to visualize endogenous and exogenous H2 S in living cells (293T, Caco-2 and CT-26 cells). In particular, the excellent ability of DCP-H2 S to distinguish normal mice and tumor mice is shown, and it is expected to be a powerful tool for detection of H2 S in cancer diagnosis.- Published

- Abstract
Backgrounds and Objectives: Drug-coated balloons (DCBs) have shown promising benefits in improving the outcomes for patients with peripheral artery disease. Several randomized clinical trials have reported that paclitaxel-coated balloon significantly reduce the rates of restenosis and the need for reintervention in comparison with regular balloon angioplasty. Due to the differences in excipients, paclitaxel dose, and coating techniques, variable clinical outcomes have been observed with different DCBs. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a novel ZENFlow carrier-free DCB in the treatment of femoropopliteal artery occlusive disease., Methods: In this randomized controlled trial conducted at 15 sites, 192 patients with Rutherford class 3-5 were randomly assigned into two groups: drug-coated balloon group and percutaneous transluminal angioplasty group. The primary endpoint was a late lumen loss at 6 months based on blinded angiographic core laboratory evaluations, and the secondary endpoints included primary patency rate, binary restenosis, clinically driven target lesion revascularization, ankle-brachial index, Rutherford class change, and major adverse events., Results: In this multicenter trial, 93 patients received DCB angioplasty, whereas 99 patients underwent regular balloon angioplasty. The late lumen loss at 6-month follow-up was 0.50 ± 0.82 and 1.69 ± 0.87 mm in the drug-coated balloon and percutaneous transluminal angioplasty groups, respectively ( p < 0.001). During the 12-month follow-up period, the drug-coated balloon group showed a significantly higher primary patency rate (54 vs. 31.3%, p = 0.009) and markedly lower rates of target vessel restenosis (22.1 vs. 64.3%, p < 0.001) and clinically driven target lesion revascularization rate (5.4 vs. 19.2%, p = 0.006) than the percutaneous transluminal angioplasty group. Compared with the percutaneous transluminal angioplasty group, the drug-coated balloon group had significant improvements in the ankle-brachial index and Rutherford class. The all-cause mortality rate was comparable, and no device-related deaths occurred in either groups., Conclusions: Balloon angioplasty using a ZENFlow carrier-free drug-coated balloon is a safe and effective treatment method for femoropopliteal artery lesions. This novel drug-coated balloon catheter achieved satisfactory early and 1-year outcomes in this trial., Clinical Trial Registration: https://clinicaltrials.gov, identifier: NCT03844724., Competing Interests: The authors declare that the research was conducted in the absence of any commercial or financial relationships that could be construed as a potential conflict of interest., (Copyright © 2022 Ni, Ye, Zhang, Jin, Shu, Jiang, Yang, Wu, Li, Yu, Yang, Huang, Wang, Li, Jiang, Wu and Liu.)

- Abstract
Background: Catheter ablation for parahisian ventricular arrhythmias (PHVA) is technically challenging and associated with increased risks of atrioventricular block (AVB). We developed a systemic mapping approach to improve the efficacy and safety of PHVA ablation., Methods: Forty-three patients (29 males; average age 65.8 ± 10.5 years) with PHVAs were enrolled. A systemic mapping approach comprising differential electrocardiogram, sequential mapping, and ablation beneath/above the septal leaflet of the tricuspid valve (SLTV) and at the neighboring/contralateral regions (the aortic root and sub-aortic valve region) was applied for PHVA. The effectiveness and safety of this approach was evaluated at 1 year's follow-up., Results: Sequential ablation beneath the SLTV (B-SLTV) succeeded in 24 (66.7 %) of 36 with right PHVA and ablation above the SLTV succeeded in 6 of the remaining 12 with failed B-SLTV ablation. Target-His bundle (HB) distance > 4.5 mm significantly predicted successful right PHVA ablation (OR 1.703; 95% CI 1.084-2.676, P = 0.02). "Seeming" right PHVA by electrocardiogram in 4 and apparent left PHVA in 3 was successfully ablated at the sub-aortic parahisian region. At 1 year's follow-up, 27 (75%) of 36 patients with right PHVA and 6 (85.7%) of 7 patients with left PHVA were free of PHVA recurrence off anti-arrhythmic drugs. The total success rate was 76.7% by using the systemic mapping approach for PHVA. One patient with A-SLTV ablation underwent pacemaker implantation due to complete AVB., Conclusions: The systemic mapping approach was effective and safe for treating PHVA. The target-HB distance was a significant predictor for right PHVA ablation., Competing Interests: The authors declare that the research was conducted in the absence of any commercial or financial relationships that could be construed as a potential conflict of interest., (Copyright © 2022 Kong, Shuang, Li, Zou, Jiang, Pu and Wang.)

- Abstract
Schizophrenia is associated with an increased risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS), which is an important risk factor for developing cognitive impairment in the general population. A few case-control studies have explored the relationship between MetS and cognitive deficits in individuals with schizophrenia but with inconsistent findings. This meta-analysis of case-control studies was carried out to explore the association between MetS and cognitive performance in patients with schizophrenia. Only case-control studies assessing the association of cognitive function and MetS in patients with schizophrenia were identified. Cognitive function was assessed using the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) scale. Six case-control studies (n = 992) comparing cognition between patients with schizophrenia with MetS (n = 426) and those without MetS (n = 566) using the RBANS were identified. Compared to patients with schizophrenia without MetS, patients with schizophrenia and MetS had significantly more impairments in RBANS total scores [standardized mean difference (SMD) = -0.26, 95% confidence interval (CI): -0.51 to -0.02; I
2 = 72%; p = 0.03], immediate memory (SMD = -0.32, 95% CI: -0.54 to -0.10; I2 = 66%; p = 0.005), attention (SMD = -0.29, 95% CI: -0.56 to -0.02; I2 = 77%; p = 0.03), and delayed memory (SMD = -0.24, 95% CI: -0.46 to -0.03; I2 = 64%; p = 0.03). No group difference was found regarding visuospatial skills and language (p > 0.05). This meta-analysis found that schizophrenia patients with MetS had worse performance on certain cognitive tasks than non-MetS patients., (© 2021. Velvetleaf, an annual broadleaf weed, is a common and troublesome weed of cropping systems worldwide. Laboratory and field experiments were conducted to determine the effects of environmental factors on germination and emergence of velvetleaf. Seeds germinated over a range of constant temperatures from 10 to 40 oC regardless of light conditions, but no germination occurred at temperature below 5 oC and beyond 50 oC. Seeds germinated at alternating temperature regimes of 15/5 to 40/30 oC, with maximum germination (>90%) at alternating temperatures of 40/30 oC. Germination was sensitive to water stress, and only 0.4% of the seeds germinated at the osmotic potential of -0.4 MPa. There was no germination at ? 0.6 MPa. Moreover, germination was reduced by saline and alkaline stresses and no germination occurred at ³ 150 mM NaCl or ³ 200 mM NaHCO3 concentrations. However, pH values from 5 to 9 had no effect on seed germination. Seedling emergence was significantly affected by burial depth and maximum emergence (78.1-85.6%) occurred at the 1-4 cm depth. The results of this study have contributed to our understanding of the germination and emergence of velvetleaf and should enhance our ability to improve control strategies in cropping systems in central China.

- Abstract
CD147, also known as EMMPRIN or basigin, is a transmembrane glycoprotein receptor that activates matrix metalloproteinases and promotes inflammation. CD147 function is regulated by posttranslational modifications of which glycosylation has attracted the most attention. In this study, we demonstrated that glycosylated CD147 was the dominant form in heart tissue, and its levels were markedly elevated in response to transverse aortic constriction (TAC). Adeno-associated virus 9-mediated, cardiac-specific overexpression of wild-type CD147 in mice significantly promoted pressure overload-induced pathological cardiac remodeling accompanied by augmented oxidative stress and ferroptosis. By contrast, mutations of CD147 glycosylation sites notably weakened these detrimental effects of CD147. Mechanistically, CD147 exacerbated TAC-induced pathological cardiac remodeling via direct binding with the adaptor molecule TRAF2 and subsequent activation of TAK1 signalling, which was dependent on glycosylation of CD147. Collectively, our findings provide the first evidence that CD147 promoted pathological cardiac remodeling and dysfunction in a glycosylation-dependent manner through binding the adaptor protein TRAF2 and activating the downstream TRAF2-TAK1 signalling pathway. Thus, glycosylation of CD147 may be a potent interventional target for heart failure treatment., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no conflicts of interest., (Copyright © 2022 Fang-yuan Zhong et al.)
