Abstract

Atmospheric self-organization and activator-inhibitor dynamics in biology provide examples of checkerboard-like spatio-temporal organization. We study a simple model for local activation-inhibition processes. Our model, first introduced in the context of atmospheric moisture dynamics, is a continuous-energy and non-Abelian version of the fixed-energy sandpile model. Each lattice site is populated by a non-negative real number, its energy. Upon each timestep all sites with energy exceeding a unit threshold re-distribute their energy at equal parts to their nearest neighbors. The limit cycle dynamics gives rise to a complex phase diagram in dependence on the mean energy $\mu$: For low $\mu$, all dynamics ceases after few re-distribution events. For large $\mu$, the dynamics is well-described as a diffusion process, where the order parameter, spatial variance $\sigma$, is removed. States at intermediate $\mu$ are dominated by checkerboard-like period-two phases which are however interspersed by much more complex phases of far longer periods. Phases are separated by discontinuous jumps in $\sigma$ or $\partial_{\mu}\sigma$ - akin to first and higher-order phase transitions. Abstract

The visual system offers unparalleled precision in the assessment of neuroaxonal damage. With the majority of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) experiencing afferent and efferent visual dysfunction, outcome measures capturing these deficits provide insight into neuroaxonal injury, even in those with minimal disability. Ideal for use in clinical trials, visual measures are generally inexpensive, accessible, and reproducible. Quantification of visual acuity, visual fields, visual quality of life, and electrophysiologic parameters allows assessment of function, whereas optical coherence tomography (OCT) provides reliable measures of the structural integrity of the anterior afferent visual pathway. The technology of oculomotor biometrics continues to advance, and discrete measures of fixation, smooth pursuit, and saccadic eye movement abnormalities are ready for inclusion in future trials of MS progression. Visual outcomes allow tracking of neuroaxonal injury and aid in distinguishing MS from diseases such as neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) or myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated diseases (MOGAD). OCT has also provided unique insights into pathophysiology, including the identification of foveal pitting in NMOSD, possibly from damage to Müller cells, which carry an abundance of aquaporin-4 channels. For some study designs, the cost-benefit ratio favors visual outcomes over more expensive MRI outcomes. With the next frontier of therapeutics focused on remyelination and neuroprotection, visual outcomes are likely to take center stage. As an international community of collaborative, committed, vision scientists, this review by the International MS Visual System Consortium (IMSVISUAL) outlines the quality standards, informatics, and framework needed to routinely incorporate vision outcomes into MS and NMOSD trials.

Abstract

Clustering of tropical thunderstorms constitutes an important climate feedback because it influences the heat radiated to space. Convective self-aggregation (CSA) is a profound modelling paradigm for explaining the clustering of tropical oceanic thunderstorms. However, CSA is hampered in the realistic limit of fine model resolution when cold pools -- dense air masses beneath thunderstorm clouds -- are well-resolved. Studies on CSA usually assume the surface temperature to be constant, despite realistic surface temperatures varying significantly between night and day, even over the sea. Here we mimic oscillating surface temperatures in cloud resolving numerical experiments and show that, in the presence of a diurnal cycle, CSA is enabled by high resolutions. We attribute this finding to vigorous combined cold pools emerging in symbiosis with mesoscale convective systems. Such cold pools suppress buoyancy in extended regions ($\mathbf{\sim 100}$ km) and enable the formation of persistent dry patches. Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI)-based diagnostic algorithms have achieved ambitious aims through automated image pattern recognition. For neurological disorders, this includes neurodegeneration and inflammation. Scalable imaging technology for big data in neurology is optical coherence tomography (OCT). We highlight that OCT changes observed in the retina, as a window to the brain, are small, requiring rigorous quality control pipelines. There are existing tools for this purpose. Firstly, there are human-led validated consensus quality control criteria (OSCAR-IB) for OCT. Secondly, these criteria are embedded into OCT reporting guidelines (APOSTEL). The use of the described annotation of failed OCT scans advances machine learning. This is illustrated through the present review of the advantages and disadvantages of AI-based applications to OCT data. The neurological conditions reviewed here for the use of big data include Alzheimer disease, stroke, multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson disease, and epilepsy. It is noted that while big data is relevant for AI, ownership is complex. For this reason, we also reached out to involve representatives from patient organizations and the public domain in addition to clinical and research centers. The evidence reviewed can be grouped in a five-point expansion of the OSCAR-IB criteria to embrace AI (OSCAR-AI). The review concludes by specific recommendations on how this can be achieved practically and in compliance with existing guidelines.

Abstract

Common respiratory viruses cause seasonal epidemics in sequential patterns. The underlying mechanisms for this pattern have been debated for some time. For influenza, contenders include temperature, humidity, and vitamin D levels. While such seasonal drivers may be sufficient to explain midwinter peaking it is unclear if other respiratory viruses peaking in spring, summer, or fall have individual environmental drivers. Here we present a dynamic model of interacting diseases, in an effort to explain observed seasonal patterns without requiring multiple seasonal drivers. Our model extends the classical SIRS-model to include multiple diseases that interact via a short-lasting, non-specific immunity component. This temporal protection is triggered by exposure to any epidemic disease and lasts only a couple of weeks. We show that the inhibiting disease-interaction allows recurrent epidemic behaviour without any seasonal driving. In the presence of a single seasonal driver our model parsimoniously predicts epidemic patterns such as sequentially occurring epidemic diseases. We also present a two-disease simulation reproducing multiple features observed in time series of parainfluenza strains PIV-3 and biennial PIV-1 epidemic patterns. Complex epidemic patterns of seasonal diseases may be explained by non-specific innate or cloub cell (T-cell) mediated immune responses that result in interaction between unrelated respiratory epidemic diseases., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Social discrimination seems to be a persistent phenomenon in many cultures. It is important to understand the mechanisms that lead people to judge others by the group to which they belong, rather than individual qualities. It was recently shown that evolutionary (imitation) dynamics can lead to a hierarchical discrimination between agents marked with observable, but otherwise meaningless, labels. These findings suggest that it can give useful insight, to describe the phenomenon of social discrimination in terms of spontaneous symmetry breaking. The investigations so far have, however, only considered binary labels. In this contribution we extend the investigations to models with up to seven different labels. We find the features known from the binary label model remain remarkably robust when the number of labels is increased. We also discover a new feature, namely that it is more likely for neighbours to have strategies which are similar, in the sense that they agree on how to act towards a subset of the labels., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures + supplement (6 pages, 8 figures)

26. Imitating the winner leads to discrimination in spatial prisoner's dilemma model

Abstract

The occurrence of discrimination is an important problem in the social and economical sciences. Much of the discrimination observed in empirical studies can be explained by the theory of in-group favoritism, which states that people tend to act more positively towards peers whose appearances are more similar to their own. Some studies, however, find hierarchical structures in inter-group relations, where members of low-status groups also favor the high-status group members. These observations cannot be understood in the light of in-group favoritism. Here we present an agent based model in which evolutionary dynamics can result in a hierarchical discrimination between two groups characterized by a meaningless, but observable binary label. We find that discriminating strategies end up dominating the system when the selection pressure is high, i.e. when agents have a much higher probability of imitating their neighbor with the highest payoff. These findings suggest that the puzzling persistence of hierarchical discrimination may result from the evolutionary dynamics of the social system itself, namely the social imitation dynamics. Abstract

Aims 3D echocardiographic (3DE) assessment of the left atrium (LA) is a new modality of potential clinical value. Age- and sex-based normative values are needed to benchmark these parameters for clinical use. Methods and results Of 4466 participants in the 5th Copenhagen City Heart Study, a prospective longitudinal cohort study on the general population, 2082 participants underwent 3DE of the LA. Healthy participants were included to establish normative values for LA strain, volume, and function by 3DE. The effects of age and sex were also evaluated. After excluding participants with comorbidities, 979 healthy participants (median age 44 years, 39.6% males) remained. The median and limits of normality (2.5th and 97.5th percentiles) for functional and volumetric measures were as follows: LA reservoir strain (LASr) 30.8% (18.4–44.2%), LA conduit strain (LAScd) 19.1% (6.8–32.0%), LA contractile strain 11.7% (4.3–22.2%), total LA emptying fraction (LAEF) 61.4% (47.8–71.0%), passive LAEF 37.7% (17.4–53.9%), active LAEF 37.4% (22.2–52.5%), LA minimum volume index (LAVimin) 10.2 (5.9–18.5) mL/m2, and LA maximum volume index (LAVimax) 26.8 (16.5–40.1) mL/m2. All parameters changed significantly with increasing age (P value for all <0.001). Significant sex-specific differences were observed for all parameters except active LAEF and LAVimax. Sex significantly modified the association between age and LASr (P for interaction < 0.001), LAScd (P for interaction < 0.001), LAVimin (P for interaction = 0.037), and total LAEF (P for interaction = 0.034) such that these parameters deteriorated faster with age in females than males. Aims Mitral regurgitation (MR) can be difficult to quantify. Methods and results The study included 4466 participants from the 5th Copenhagen City Heart Study, a prospective general population study, who underwent transthoracic echocardiography. MR jet area was measured and indexed to LA area. The endpoint was incident AF. MR was quantified in 4042 participants (mean age: 57 years, 43% men). Of these, 198 (4.9%) developed AF during a median follow-up period of 5.3 years (interquartile range: 4.4–6.1 years). MR was present in 1938 participants (48%) including 1593 (39%) trace/mild MRs (MR/LA ratio ≤ 20% and ≤4 cm2). In unadjusted analysis, MR/LA ratio was associated with incident AF [HR: 1.06 (1.00–1.13), P = 0.042 per 5% increase] but not after adjusting for CHARGE-AF score. However, the association was modified by age (P for interaction = 0.034), such that MR/LA ratio was associated with AF only in participants ≤ 73 years. In these participants, MR/LA ratio 'was' independently associated with AF after adjusting for CHARGE-AF score [HR: 1.14 (1.06–1.24), P = 0.001, per 5% increase]. This finding persisted when restricting the analysis to participants without moderate or severe MR and normal LA size [HR: 1.35 (1.09–1.68), P = 0.005, per 5% increase]. Conclusion MR, including even trace regurgitations quantified by MR/LA ratio, is independently associated with incident AF in individuals ≤ 73 years of age. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

ObjectiveTo develop consensus recommendations for reporting of quantitative optical coherence tomography (OCT) study results.MethodsA panel of experienced OCT researchers (including 11 neurologists, 2 ophthalmologists, and 2 neuroscientists) discussed requirements for performing and reporting quantitative analyses of retinal morphology and developed a list of initial recommendations based on experience and previous studies. The list of recommendations was subsequently revised during several meetings of the coordinating group.ResultsWe provide a 9-point checklist encompassing aspects deemed relevant when reporting quantitative OCT studies. The areas covered are study protocol, acquisition device, acquisition settings, scanning protocol, funduscopic imaging, postacquisition data selection, postacquisition data analysis, recommended nomenclature, and statistical analysis.ConclusionsThe Advised Protocol for OCT Study Terminology and Elements recommendations include core items to standardize and improve quality of reporting in quantitative OCT studies. The recommendations will make reporting of quantitative OCT studies more consistent and in line with existing standards for reporting research in other biomedical areas. The recommendations originated from expert consensus and thus represent Class IV evidence. They will need to be regularly adjusted according to new insights and practices.
