Although Apiospora Sacc. has previously been considered a sexual morph of Arthrinium species on the basis of phylogenetic, morphological, and ecological diagnoses, a recent study delimited these as different species. Recently, 14 species, including eight new species, of marine Arthrinium have been reported from Korea. Six known species have previously been renamed as species in the genus Apiospora (A. arundinis, A. marii, A. piptatheri, A. rasikravindrae, A. sacchari, and A. saccharicola). However, the eight new species of marine Arthrinium (Ar. agari, Ar. arctoscopi, Ar. fermenti, Ar. koreanum, Ar. marinum, Ar. pusillispermum, Ar. sargassi, and Ar. taeanense) are yet to be studied, and thus the taxonomic status of these species remains to be clarified. In this study, we conducted phylogenetic analyses using the internal transcribed spacer, 28S large subunit ribosomal RNA gene, translation elongation factor 1-alpha, and beta-tubulin regions to confirm the phylogenetic position of these eight species. Based on these analyses, we re-identified the eight Arthrinium species as new combinations in Apiospora. Additionally, among the six known Apiospora species, two (A. piptatheri and A. rasikravindrae) have not previously been recorded in Korea. On the basis of morphological and molecular analyses, we report these as new species in Korea. Purpose: The purpose of this research was to analyze the relationship between dose-volumetric parameters and the development of diabetes mellitus (DM) in patients treated with chemoradiotherapy (CRT) following curative resection for upper gastrointestinal (GI) cancers.Patients and Methods: Medical records of patients who underwent postoperative CRT following curative resection, either pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) or pylorus preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy (PPPD) for upper GI cancers including pancreas, biliary, ampullary, and duodenal cancers, between January 2006 and December 2008 were retrospectively reviewed. A total of 42 patients who were regularly followed for at least 2 years were included for analysis. Dose-volumetric parameters such as remnant pancreatic volume, mean dose, maximum dose (Dmax), and percentage of volume receiving specific dose or more were obtained from pre- and postoperative CT scan images and treatment plan.Results: Dmax and V50 (percentage of volume receiving at least 50 Gy) were statistically significant factors for the development of DM (p = 0.013, p = 0.031, respectively). The sensitivity and specificity of Dmax was 0.875 and 0.559, with cut-off value of 51.1 Gy, respectively. V50 had sensitivity of 0.875 and specificity of 0.618 for cut-off value of 16 %. No patient-related factor other than pretreatment cerebrovascular events was associated with the development of DM. On multivariate analysis, V50 was the only factor with statistical significance (p = 0.028), whereas Dmax showed borderline significance (p = 0.079).Conclusion: V50 was the only independent factor associated with the development of diabetes and may function as guideline to predict the development of DM in patients receiving CRT following curative resection. Endothelium-derived nitric oxide (NO) plays an important role in transducing the effects of angiogenic factors. Asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) is an endogenous inhibitor of NO synthase (NOS). We used a murine model of hindlimb ischemia to investigate whether genetic or metabolic changes in ADMA levels could impair angiogenic response in vivo. Hindlimb ischemia was surgically induced in C57BL/6J mice, apo E-deficient mice, or transgenic mice overexpressing dimethylarginine dimethylaminohydrolase (DDAH). Some animals were also treated with the NOS antagonist L-nitro-arginine, or the NO precursor L-arginine. Angiogenesis was quantified in the hindlimb skeletal muscle by capillary/myocyte ratio. Plasma or tissue ADMA levels were measured by HPLC. In normal mice, hindlimb ischemia increased tissue ADMA twofold, and reduced DDAH and NOS expression. This was associated with a reduced NOS activity (by over 80%) three days following surgery. On day seven, a threefold increase in DDAH expression and a fall in tissue ADMA levels were associated with a sevenfold increase in NOS activity, whereas NOS expression did not increase above baseline. In DDAH transgenic mice, the elevation of ADMA and decrement in NOS activity was blunted during hindlimb ischemia. Plasma ADMA levels were increased in apo E-mice (1.79 ± 0.45 versus 1.07 ± 0.08 μmol/l; p = 0.008). Capillary index was significantly reduced in apo Emice up to seven weeks after surgery (0.25 ± 0.05 versus 0.62 ±; 0.08; p > 0.001). The effect of hypercholesterolemia on capillary index was reversed by L-arginine, and (in wild-type mice) mimicked by administration of the NOS antagonist L-nitro-arginine. To analyze the aberrant expression of cell cycle-related proteins and their biological significance in relation to cirrhosis, we compared the cirrhotic patterns induced by two different types of cirrhotic agents, CCl4 and thioacetamide (TAA) in rats. CCl4 or TAA treatment was given to rats for 8 or 30 weeks, respectively, and the livers were removed at 9, 20, and 30 weeks after the experiment began. The TAA-induced fibrotic pattern was different from the CCl4-induced one, in terms of the formation of fibrous connective tissue and the proliferation of bile ductule cells. Cholangiofibrosis and clear cell foci were also observed in TAA-treated rats at 30 weeks. Histological examination revealed severe cirrhotic changes at 9 weeks in CCl4-treated rats and at 30 weeks in TAA-treated rats. Immunoblotting for cyclin D1, E, A, B, and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) and their counterpart protein kinases (CDK2, 4, and CDC2) showed significant overexpression in rats with severely cirrhotic livers. The p53 tumor suppressor protein increased dramatically in the CCl4-treated group, while it was not detected in the livers of TAA-treated rats. Upregulation of p21WAF1, a CDK inhibitory protein, was detected in TAA-treated rats, but not in CCl4-treated rats. Immunohistochemical data for cyclin D1, E, and PCNA were well correlated with immunoblotting data; these proteins were increased in hepatocytes surrounding the cirrhotic lesions, suggesting that hepatocyte regeneration is correlated with cell cycle-related protein expression in cirrhotic liver. In the TAA-treated rats, the expression of these proteins was increased both in hepatocytes and in ductule cells. Our data suggest that liver cirrhosis induced by CCl4 or TAA is associated with alterations in cell cycle-related proteins, and that the expression of these proteins is responsible for hepatocyte regeneration in the damaged liver and may be involved in liver carcinogenesis. Developmental Endothelial Locus-1 (DEL-1), also known as EGF-like repeat and discoidin I-like domain-3 (EDIL3), is increasingly recognized for its multifaceted roles in immunoregulation and vascular biology. DEL-1 is a protein that is mainly produced by endothelial cells. It interacts with various integrins to regulate the behavior of immune cells, such as preventing unnecessary recruitment and inflammation. DEL-1 also helps in resolving inflammation by promoting efferocytosis, which is the process of clearing apoptotic cells. Its potential as a therapeutic target in immune-mediated blood disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and cancermetastasis has been spotlighted due to its wide-ranging implications in vascular integrity and pathology. However, there are still unanswered questions about DEL-1's precise functions and mechanisms. This review provides a comprehensive examination of DEL-1's activity across different vascular contexts and explores its potential clinical applications. A new high-flow, compact aerosol concentrator, using rapid, turbulent mixing to grow aerosol particles into droplets for dry spot sample collection, has been designed and tested. The "TCAC (Turbulent-mixing, Condensation Aerosol Concentrator)" is composed of a saturator for generating hot vapor, a mixing section where the hot vapor mixes with the cold aerosol flow, a growth tube where condensational droplet growth primarily occurs, and a converging nozzle that focuses the droplets into a beam. The prototype concentrator utilizes an aerosol sample flow rate of 4 L min−1. The TCAC was optimized by varying the operating conditions, such as relative humidity of the aerosol flow, mixing flow ratio, vapor temperature, and impaction characteristics. The results showed that particles with a diameter ≥ 25 nm can be grown to a droplet diameter > 1400 nm with near 100% efficiency. Complete activation and growth were observed at relative humidity ≥ 25% of the aerosol sample flow. A consistent spot sample with a diameter of D90 = 1.4 mm (the diameter of a circle containing 90% of the deposited particles) was obtained regardless of the aerosol particle diameter (dp = 20–1900 nm). For fiber counting applications using phase contrast microscopy, the TCAC can reduce the sampling time, or counting uncertainty, by two to three orders of magnitude, compared to the 25-mm-filter collection. The study shows that the proposed mixing-flow scheme enables a compact spot sample collector suitable for handheld or portable applications, while still allowing for high flow rates. Melt-blown polypropylene (PP) is extensively used in air filtration due to its low cost, low weight, and easy processing, but there are increasing environmental concerns due to its non-degradability. On the other side biodegradable polymers such as polylactic acid (PLA) present insufficient strength and limited toughness. Polymer blending is a well-known approach to reach optimum properties from at least two polymers. This study aims to produce biodegradable PP-PLA-based filter materials that possess enhanced elasticity and superior filtration performance. The addition of PLA raises the average fiber diameter (AFD), causing the PP-PLA filters to have AFD ranging from 0.73 to 0.91 μm. However, the incorporation of zinc stearate (ZnSt) decreased the melt viscosity, resulting in thinner fiber formations with AFD ranging from 0.6 to 0.75 μm for PP-PLA-ZnSt. The efficiency of the corona-charged optimized sample (double-layer 75PP-25PLA-ZnSt) showed 97.42% particle capture efficiency and filtration performance of 0.12 mmH2O−1. Despite the presence of hydrophobic surfaces in all filter materials, the addition of ZnSt further improves the resistance to surface wettability. 75PP-25PLA-ZnSt filter material exhibits high stretchability, with a maximum tensile strength of 380 ± 70 kPa. Liver fibrosis is a reparative response triggered by liver injury. Non‐invasive assessment and staging of liver fibrosis in patients with chronic liver disease are of paramount importance, as treatment strategies and prognoses depend significantly on the degree of fibrosis. Although liver fibrosis has traditionally been staged through invasive liver biopsy, this method is prone to sampling errors, particularly when biopsy sizes are inadequate. Consequently, there is an urgent clinical need for an alternative to biopsy, one that ensures precise, sensitive, and non‐invasive diagnosis and staging of liver fibrosis. Non‐invasive imaging assessments have assumed a pivotal role in clinical practice, enjoying growing popularity and acceptance due to their potential for diagnosing, staging, and monitoring liver fibrosis. In this comprehensive review, we first delved into the current landscape of non‐invasive imaging technologies, assessing their accuracy and the transformative impact they have had on the diagnosis and management of liver fibrosis in both clinical practice and animal models. Additionally, we provided an in‐depth exploration of recent advancements in ultrasound imaging, computed tomography imaging, magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear medicine imaging, radiomics, and artificial intelligence within the field of liver fibrosis research. We summarized the key concepts, advantages, limitations, and diagnostic performance of each technique. Finally, we discussed the challenges associated with clinical implementation and offer our perspective on advancing the field, hoping to provide alternative directions for the future research. The current treatment options for peripheral arterial disease (PAD) are limited due to a lack of significant high-level evidence to inform clinical decisions and unfavorable outcomes in terms of cost-effectiveness and amputation rates. In order to suggest the use of the commercially available L-Ornithine-L-Aspartate (LOLA) for treating PAD, we induced hind limb ischemia (HLI) by unilaterally ligating the femoral artery in a rat model. The rats were randomly divided into three groups, with seven rats assigned to each group: group 1 (control), group 2 (sorbitol), and group 3 (LOLA). Intraperitoneal injections were administered five times on post-operative days (PODs) 3, 5, 7, 10, and 12. Perfusion imaging was conducted on PODs 7 and 14 and compared to pre-operative perfusion imaging. Immunohistochemistry staining and Western blotting were performed after the final perfusion imaging. Group 3 showed a significant increase in perfusion, high CD31-positive capillary lumen density, and substantial overexpression of VEGF in the ischemic limb during the subacute phase of HLI. In conclusion, this study provides the first documented evidence of angiogenesis and perfusion recovery in the subacute phase of the HLI model following the administration of LOLA. With LOLA readily available on the commercial market, the implementation of LOLA treatment for PAD in humans can be expedited compared to other therapies still in the developmental stage. Introduction: Image-guided invasive procedures on the liver require a steep learning curve to acquire the necessary skills. The best and safest way to achieve these skills is through hands-on courses that include simulations and phantoms of different complications, without any risks for patients. There are many liver phantoms on the market made of various materials; however, there are few multimodal liver phantoms, and only two are cast in a 3D-printed mold. Methods: We created a virtual liver and 3D-printed mold by segmenting a CT scan. The InVesalius and Autodesk Fusion 360 software packages were used for segmentation and 3D modeling. Using this modular mold, we cast and tested silicone- and gelatin-based liver phantoms with tumor and vascular formations inside. We tested the gelatin liver phantoms for several procedures, including ultrasound diagnosis, elastography, fibroscan, ultrasound-guided biopsy, ultrasound-guided drainage, ultrasound-guided radio-frequency ablation, CT scan diagnosis, CT–ultrasound fusion, CT-guided biopsy, and MRI diagnosis. The phantoms were also used in hands-on ultrasound courses at four international congresses. Results: We evaluated the feedback of 33 doctors regarding their experiences in using and learning on liver phantoms to validate our model for training in ultrasound procedures. Conclusions: We validated our liver phantom solution, demonstrating its positive impact on the education of young doctors who can safely learn new procedures thus improving the outcomes of patients with different liver pathologies.
