The objective of this experiment was to compare the nutritional properties of potato protein concentrate, a by-product of the starch industry produced entirely in Europe, with that of soybean meal (SBM), for growing cattle. The experiment was conducted on double-muscled Belgian Blue bulls, fitted with rumen, duodenal and ileal cannulas, according to a 4 × 4 Latin square design. They were fed three different iso-N and iso-net energy diets formulated according to the Dutch feed evaluation system, differing in the nature of the main protein source, which was either SBM (‘SBM’ treatment), potato protein concentrate (PPC, ‘PPC’ treatment) or an iso-N mixture of these two protein sources (‘mixed’ treatment). A fourth treatment consisted of ‘PPC’ supplemented by 9.5% digestible proteins supplied by duodenal perfusion of sodium caseinate (CAS, ‘PPC + CAS’ treatment). No significant difference was observed in the ruminal fluid pH, whereas both ‘PPC’ and ‘PPC + CAS’ had the effect of reducing the ruminal ammonia nitrogen (N-NH3) concentration. No significant difference was observed in the apparent intestinal digestibility of the dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM) or N. Outflows of non-NH3-N, microbial proteins and dietary proteins from the rumen were similar for ‘PPC’, ‘SBM’ and ‘mixed’, and increased with CAS infusion by 20%, 17% and 27%, respectively. On the basis of in vivo observations, the degradability of SBM and PPC proteins was estimated at 0.60 and 0.43, respectively, corresponding to the values quoted in the literature. The supply of digestible essential amino acids (EAA) was significantly greater with ‘PPC + CAS’ and did not differ among ‘SBM’, ‘mixed’ and ‘PPC’. This illustrates the difficulty of altering the amino acid (AA) pattern of digestible protein by the nature of the protein of dietary origin when an animal is fed a high nutritional value diet. N retention was not affected by replacing SBM with PPC, but increased by 10% with CAS infusion. On the basis of the plasma AA pattern, the supply of digestible Met was probably limiting with ‘SBM’, ‘mixed’ and ‘PPC’. The CAS perfusion supplemented all AA, including Met, leading to increased N retention. This improvement was limited, however, and N utilisation remained unchanged between treatments. In conclusion, despite a more favourable EAA pattern, PPC offered no advantage compared with SBM for growing bulls when diets were formulated according to the Dutch feed evaluation system.

Recent advancements in modern technologies have significantly improved our ability to unveil and interpret such written cultural heritage that, for centuries, had remained inaccessible to contemporary understanding. This paper aims to present a critical overview of state-of-the-art technologies, engaging in discussions about perspectives and limitations, and anticipating future applications. Serving as a practical guide, this work seeks to assist in the selection of techniques for digitally restoring ancient writings. The need to achieve the sustainability goals and to reduce the continuous exploitation of the limited urban areas increases requests for the regeneration of brownfields. The current study aims to review the state of brownfields in the Northern Czech Region and neighboring German (Saxony) and Polish (Silesian) Regions which share a common geological background and environmental problems. The peculiarities of the brownfield's properties related to the term, classification, legislative framework, access to available data, degree of contamination, and remediation methods were the focus of this review. It was established that the state with brownfield identification and transformation is better in the Czech Republic, followed by Germany, with lower awareness in Poland. The relevant examples of successful brownfield revitalization and the importance of educational components were introduced. A prospective application of the phytotechnology with the second-generation crops for the remediation of brownfields was discussed. The utilization of Miscanthus spp. for marginal lands with low contamination can provide an economic return by having biomass converted into energy or bioproducts and the utilization of the accompanied waste as carbon-rich biochar which can indeed support phytoremediation, enhance plants' growth and serve as a medium for carbon sequestration. The next steps in the research have to concentrate on comparison of the rehabilitation methods introduced for the targeted regions with the global approach in brownfield redevelopment along with the practical ensuring the phytotechnology potential at the selected brownfields. Soil contamination with trace elements (TEs) is a pressing problem limiting the cultivation of agricultural crops; however, the non-food energy crop Miscanthus × giganteus (M×g) can be grown on such soil. The effect of a new plant growth regulator (PGR), Kamethur, and conventional Charkor was studied when M×g was cultivated in TE-contaminated soils from Všebořice and Chomutov, in the Northern Czech Republic. Kamethur was beneficial for achieving a higher leaves and stem biomass (by 57.1 and 126%, respectively) in the more contaminated Všebořice soil, while Charkor increased only the leaves biomass (49.5%). Analysis of the comprehensive bio-concentration index showed that Charkor decreased stem accumulation of elements essential for plant development (EEs), as well as the potentially toxic (PTEs) elements, by 33.3 and 11.4%, respectively. Kamethur decreased stem accumulation of EEs by 11.4% and increased the accumulation of PTEs by 23.3%. Statistical evaluation of the current results and literature data illustrated the ability of Charkor to reduce the uptake of PTEs, which is critical for converting clean biomass to bioproducts. Further research should confirm the influence of PGRs on the bioparameters and phytoremediation processes of M×g at the field plantation level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Competitive and facilitative interactions influence bacterial community composition, diversity and functioning. However, the role of genetic diversity for determining interactions between coexisting strains of the same, or closely related, species remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated the type (facilitative/inhibitory) and potential underlying mechanisms of pairwise interactions between 24 genetically diverse bacterial strains belonging to three genospecies (gsA,C,E) of the Rhizobium leguminosarum species complex. Interactions were determined indirectly, based on secreted compounds in cell‐free supernatants, and directly, as growth inhibition in cocultures. We found supernatants mediated both facilitative and inhibitory interactions that varied greatly between strains and genospecies. Overall, gsE strains indirectly suppressed growth of gsA strains, while their own growth was facilitated by other genospecies' supernatants. Similar genospecies‐level patterns were observed in direct competition, where gsA showed the highest susceptibility and gsE the highest inhibition capacity. At the genetic level, increased gsA susceptibility was associated with a non‐random distribution of quorum sensing and secondary metabolite genes across genospecies. Together, our results suggest that genetic variation is associated with facilitative and competitive interactions, which could be important ecological mechanisms explaining R. leguminosarum diversity. The research has been focusing on some connection between the chemical composition of the papers obtained by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and the nature of the fillers, determined by energy dispersion X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) spectroscopy. The present paper corroborates the FTIR and EDXRF results obtained for some historical papers from books of the XIX-th and XX-th centuries, from private collections. These analytical results allowed a first approximation of technological paper composition and of the age determination of the samples. This analytical method can elaborate some properly methods for paper documents preservation, taking into account the aging and degradation processes of the historical paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This review describes the application of selected spectroscopic techniques to the world of cultural heritage conservation. In recent times, science and technology have been applied to the world of cultural heritage, conservation and preservation. In this field, spectroscopic techniques represent one of the most powerful tools to investigate the structure of all the materials constituting the “cultural object.” In particular, this survey will consider the “status of art” in the field of some important spectroscopic techniques for the characterization of the following works of art: easel paintings, paper and ink artifacts, stone monuments and wall paintings, and archaeological ceramics. The spectroscopic techniques that have been used and will be reviewed are Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and also coupled with the microscope, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, proton-induced X-ray emission spectroscopy, ultraviolet, visible and fluorescence spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and Mossbauer spectroscopy. Zwitterions are aqueous solvated molecules simultaneously possessing one negatively and one positively charged site. Although electroneutral, the environmental interaction of zwitterions with other ionic species is likely to differ significantly from the behavior of comparable electroneutral species without charged sites. Amino acids, the zwitterionic species that have received the most historical scrutiny, are believed to possess at least four microscopic acidity constants: k[sub a] = [H[sup +]] [[sup +]H[sub 3]NRCOO[sup -]]/[[sup +]H[sub 3]NRCOOH], k[sub b] = [H[sup +]] [H[sub 2]NRCOOH]/[[sup +]H3NRCOOH], k[sub c] = [H[sup +]] [H[sub 2]NRCOO[sup -]]/[[sup +]H[sub 3]NRCOO[sup -]], and k[sub d] = [H[sup +]] [H[sub 2]NRCOO-]/[H[sub 2]NRCOOH]. Unfortunately, due to their comparable energetics, these microscopic acidity constants cannot be discerned using standard potentiometric titration procedures. In response, experimentally observable macroscopic constants (K[sub 1] and K[sub 2]) have historically been related to the microscopic constants with the following relationships: K[sub 1] = k[sub a] + k[sub b] and 1/K[sub 2] = 1/k[sub c] + k[sub d]. It will be demonstrated that these equations are approximations suitable for restricted pH ranges and that more exact expressions can be derived: K[sub 1] = k[sub a] + k[sub b] + k[sub c]k[sub a]/[H[sup +]] + k[sub d]k[sub b]/[H[sup +]] and 1/K[sub 2] = 1/k[sub d] + 1/k[sub c] + [H[sup +]]/k[sub a]k[sub c] + [H[sup +]]/k[sub b]k[sub d]. Miscanthus × giganteus (M. × giganteus) is a perspective plant produced on marginal and contaminated lands with biomass used for energy or bioproducts. In the current study, M. × giganteus development was tested in the diesel-contaminated soils (ranged from 250 mg kg−1 to 5000 mg kg−1) and the growth dynamic, leaves quantity, plants total area, number of harvested stems and leaves, SPAD and NPQt parameters were evaluated. Results showed a remarkable M. × giganteus growth in a selected interval of diesel-contaminated soil with sufficient harvested biomass. The amendment of soil by biochar 1 (produced from wastewater sludge) and biochar 2 (produced from a mixture of wood waste and biohumus) improved the crop's morphological and physiological parameters. Biochar 1 stimulated the increase of the stems' biomass, while biochar 2 increased the leaves biomass. The plants growing in the uncontaminated soil decreased the content of NO3, pH (KCl), P2O5 and increased the content of NH4. Photosynthesis parameters showed that incorporating biochar 1 and biochar 2 to the diesel-contaminated soil prolonged the plants' vegetation, which was more potent for biochar 1. M. × giganteus utilization united with biochar amendment can be recommended to remediate diesel-contaminated land in concentration range 250–5000 mg kg−1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Applying phytotechnologies with energy crops on lands contaminated with trace elements provides cellulosic biomass and improves soil health. The process can be reflected in changes in the soil nematode community structure. This study assessed the nematode community composition of soil with Miscanthus grown with different agronomic practices. The research was conducted at Fort Riley, Kansas, USA, in soil with aged contamination by Pb at 1000 to 1500 mg/kg. The experimental design was a randomized complete block composed of four replications of five treatments: Control-undisturbed mixed plant cover and four conditions of Miscanthus growth, which consisted of No-till, Till (immediately before planting), Till + P, and Till + biosolids. Analysis of abundance, diversity, and community functional status indicators showed differential sensitivity of nematode taxa to agronomic treatments. Significant transformations in the nematode trophic group structure occurred under Miscanthus cultivation compared with the undisturbed mixed plant cover. Shannon and Pielou index response to agronomic treatments illustrated decreasing nematode community diversity with all Miscanthus agronomic conditions. However, agronomic practices led to increasing nematode community maturity, but those effects varied between spring and fall seasons. Increasing herbivores and omnivore-predators were the primary drivers of the observed changes in the nematode community due to planting Miscanthus. The nematode ecological structure indicators suggested that growth in Pb-contaminated land using different agronomical practices likely affects essential soil processes. More study is needed to define the effects of pre-plant tillage and amendments to soil nematode communities and Miscanthus yield over multiple growing seasons of this perennial crop. Miscanthus x giganteus (Mxg) is a promising second-generation biofuel crop with high production of energetic biomass. Our aim was to determine the level of plant stress of Mxg grown in poor quality soils using non-invasive physiological parameters and to test whether the stress could be reduced by application of plant growth regulators (PGRs). Plant fitness was quantified by measuring of leaf fluorescence using 24 indexes to select the most suitable fluorescence indicators for quantification of this type of abiotic stress. Simultaneously, visible stress signs were observed on stems and leaves and differences in variants were revealed also by microscopy of leaf sections. Leaf fluorescence analysis, visual observation and changes of leaf anatomy revealed significant stress in all studied subjects compared to those cultivated in good quality soil. Besides commonly used Fv/Fm (potential photosynthetic efficiency) and P.I. (performance index), which showed very low sensitivity, we suggest other fluorescence parameters (like dissipation, DIo/RC) for revealing finer differences. We can conclude that measurement of leaf fluorescence is a suitable method for revealing stress affecting Mxg in poor soils. However, none of investigated parameters proved significant positive effect of PGRs on stress reduction. Therefore, direct improvement of soil quality by fertilization should be considered for stress reduction and improving the biomass quality in this type of soils. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents a report on otitis externa due to Trichoderma longibrachiatum. Fungi are occasional pathogens in otitis externa, mainly in chronic infections. Aspergillus, the main pathogens of otomycosis, are responsible for 54-80% of cases. The researchers report here a well-documented case of otitis externa due to Trichoderma longibrachiatum. The identification was confirmed by direct sequencing of a fragment coding for the ribosomal DNA. This case and other reports in the literature illustrate the wide spectrum of fungal pathogens isolated in otomycosis and the growing importance of molecular biology in the field of identification in medical mycology.
