Charlotte J. Patterson, winner of the Award for Distinguished Contributions to Research in Public Policy, is cited as the world's expert on psychological research on children and youths raised by lesbian and gay parents. Her early analytic syntheses of the literature on the subject greatly influenced other researchers in child and family development as well as policymakers. By encouraging researchers working in human development fields to focus on developmental aspects of sexual orientation, she has changed the entire field. In addition to the citation, a biography and selected bibliography of Patterson's works are provided. Also included is her paper, entitled "Children of lesbian and gay parents: Psychology, law, and policy," a version of which Patterson delivered at the American Psychological Association's annual convention.

The use of red cabbage ("Brassica oleracea var. capitata F. rubra") extract as a pH indicator is a versatile and popular demonstration that is employed by educators in many schools and universities. Previous variations of this demonstration have used red cabbage extracts to prepare paper that changes color when solutions of acid or base are applied as "inks". In this report, we highlight the ability of red cabbage extracts to function as invisible inks. Colorless solutions are prepared by bleaching anthocyanin extracts with aqueous sodium metabisulfite, and the resulting mixture can then be used to write hidden messages on paper. The invisible messages can be revealed by the addition of citric acid solution, or by using potassium aluminum sulfate (alum) as developers. The demonstration does not require specialist equipment or chemicals, and options to use additional plant sources to prepare the ink are described.

This study examined motivators of preservice teachers (PSTs) for pursuing a teaching career. We used latent profile analysis to identify four profiles of PSTs based on their scores on personal utility value, civic mindedness, and intentions for future professional engagement. Using logistic regression, we identified motivational differences among PST content areas and latent profiles. We found that early childhood education students had higher motivation scores than students from other certification areas across different profiles. We discussed recommendations related to these findings for teacher education programs, especially for identity development and nurturing the civic motivations of PSTs who aspire to use their teaching to improve their communities.

BackgroundCytokine release triggered by a hyperactive immune response is thought to contribute to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2019 (SARS-CoV-2)–related respiratory failure. Bruton tyrosine kinase (BTK) is involved in innate immunity, and BTK inhibitors block cytokine release. We assessed the next-generation BTK inhibitor zanubrutinib in SARS-CoV-2–infected patients with respiratory distress.MethodCohort 1 had a prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled design; cohort 2 had a single-arm design. Adults with SARS-CoV-2 requiring hospitalization (without mechanical ventilation) were randomized in cohort 1. Those on mechanical ventilation ≤24 hours were enrolled in cohort 2. Patients were randomized 1:1 to zanubrutinib 320 mg once daily or placebo (cohort 1), or received zanubrutinib 320 mg once daily (cohort 2). Co-primary endpoints were respiratory failure-free survival rate and time to return to breathing room air at 28 days. Corollary studies to assess zanubrutinib’s impact on immune response were performed.ResultsSixty-three patients in cohort 1 received zanubrutinib (n=30) or placebo (n=33), with median treatment duration of 8.5 and 7.0 days, respectively. The median treatment duration in cohort 2 (n=4) was 13 days; all discontinued treatment early. In cohort 1, respiratory failure-free survival and the estimated rates of not returning to breathing room air by day 28 were not significantly different between treatments. Importantly, serological response to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was not impacted by zanubrutinib. Lower levels of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, interleukin (IL)-10, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, IL-4, and IL-13 were observed in zanubrutinib-treated patients. Moreover, single-cell transcriptome analysis showed significant downregulation of inflammatory mediators (IL-6, IL-8, macrophage colony-stimulating factor, macrophage inflammatory protein-1α, IL-1β) and signaling pathways (JAK1, STAT3, TYK2), and activation of gamma-delta T cells in zanubrutinib-treated patients.ConclusionsMarked reduction in inflammatory signaling with preserved SARS-CoV-2 serological response was observed in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 respiratory distress receiving zanubrutinib. Despite these immunological findings, zanubrutinib did not show improvement over placebo in clinical recovery from respiratory distress. Concurrent administration of steroids and antiviral therapy to most patients may have contributed to these results. Investigation of zanubrutinib may be warranted in other settings where cytokine release and immune cell exhaustion are important.Clinical Trial Registrationhttps://www.clinicaltrials.gov/study/NCT04382586, identifier NCT04382586.

Abstract Weight loss during feed deprivation is correlated with feed conversion efficiency (FCR) in several fish species, suggesting weight loss could be used to indirectly select for improved feed conversion. Trials were conducted to determine relationships among weight loss and FCR with Delta Select and Delta Control line channel catfish fingerlings. Weight loss was measured for 79 Delta Select line families and 20 Delta Control line families in replicate feed deprivation trials. Weight loss was higher for Delta Controls than Delta Selects. The 10 Delta Select families with the highest weight loss, 10 Delta Select families with the lowest weight loss, and 10 random Delta Control families were used in a feeding trial. Initial weight, final weight, percent weight gain, and percent feed consumption were similar among Delta Select groups but higher than the Delta Control's. Feed conversion and survival were similar for all groups. Fish from the feeding trial were used in a third feed deprivation trial. Family means for weight loss were positively correlated across three feed deprivation trials but not correlated with feed conversion indicating selection for weight‐loss would not improve feed conversion. The faster growth of Delta Select catfish is as a result of increased feed consumption.

The NOAA Global Monitoring Laboratory (GML) measures atmospheric hydrogen (H2) in grab samples collected weekly as flask pairs at over 50 sites in the Cooperative Global Air Sampling Network. Measurements representative of background air sampling show higher H2 in recent years at all latitudes. The marine boundary layer (MBL) global mean H2 was 552.8 ppb in 2021, 20.2 ± 0.2 ppb higher compared to 2010. A 10 ppb or more increase over the 2010–2021 average annual cycle was detected in 2016 for MBL zonal means in the tropics and in the Southern Hemisphere. Carbon monoxide measurements in the same-air samples suggest large biomass burning events in different regions likely contributed to the observed interannual variability at different latitudes. The NOAA H2 measurements from 2009 to 2021 are now based on the World Meteorological Organization Global Atmospheric Watch (WMO GAW) H2 mole fraction calibration scale, developed and maintained by the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (MPI-BGC), Jena, Germany. GML maintains eight H2 primary calibration standards to propagate the WMO scale. These are gravimetric hydrogen-in-air mixtures in electropolished stainless steel cylinders (Essex Industries, St. Louis, MO), which are stable for H2. These mixtures were calibrated at the MPI-BGC, the WMO Central Calibration Laboratory (CCL) for H2, in late 2020 and span the range 250–700 ppb. We have used the CCL assignments to propagate the WMO H2 calibration scale to NOAA air measurements performed using gas chromatography and helium pulse discharge detector instruments since 2009. To propagate the scale, NOAA uses a hierarchy of secondary and tertiary standards, which consist of high-pressure whole-air mixtures in aluminum cylinders, calibrated against the primary and secondary standards, respectively. Hydrogen at the parts per billion level has a tendency to increase in aluminum cylinders over time. We fit the calibration histories of these standards with zero-, first-, or second-order polynomial functions of time and use the time-dependent mole fraction assignments on the WMO scale to reprocess all tank air and flask air H2 measurement records. The robustness of the scale propagation over multiple years is evaluated with the regular analysis of target air cylinders and with long-term same-air measurement comparison efforts with WMO GAW partner laboratories. Long-term calibrated, globally distributed, and freely accessible measurements of H2 and other gases and isotopes continue to be essential to track and interpret regional and global changes in the atmosphere composition. The adoption of the WMO H2 calibration scale and subsequent reprocessing of NOAA atmospheric data constitute a significant improvement in the NOAA H2 measurement records.

Abstract Chronic, non-communicable diseases present a major barrier to living a long and healthy life. In many cases, early diagnosis can facilitate prevention, monitoring, and treatment efforts, improving patient outcomes. There is therefore a critical need to make screening techniques as accessible, unintimidating, and cost-effective as possible. The association between ocular biomarkers and systemic health and disease (oculomics) presents an attractive opportunity for detection of systemic diseases, as ophthalmic techniques are often relatively low-cost, fast, and non-invasive. In this review, we highlight the key associations between structural biomarkers in the eye and the four globally leading causes of morbidity and mortality: cardiovascular disease, cancer, neurodegenerative disease, and metabolic disease. We observe that neurodegenerative disease is a particularly promising target for oculomics, with biomarkers detected in multiple ocular structures. Cardiovascular disease biomarkers are present in the choroid, retinal vasculature, and retinal nerve fiber layer, and metabolic disease biomarkers are present in the eyelid, tear fluid, lens, and retinal vasculature. In contrast, only the tear fluid emerged as a promising ocular target for the detection of cancer. The retina is a rich source of oculomics data, the analysis of which has been enhanced by artificial intelligence-based tools. Although not all biomarkers are disease-specific, limiting their current diagnostic utility, future oculomics research will likely benefit from combining data from various structures to improve specificity, as well as active design, development, and optimization of instruments that target specific disease signatures, thus facilitating differential diagnoses.
