Background and Objectives: Iron deficiency is a highly prevalent problem in developing countries. One of the reasons for telogen effluvium is Iron deficiency. This study was conducted to determine the relationship between Iron deficiency and hair loss in Qom Province, Iran. Methods: This study was conducted in two separate stages. In the first stage, a cross- sectional, population-based study was performed. In the second stage, a case control study was carried out. The study was conducted during 2007 and 2008 on 10 to 45 year-old females in Qom Province. 2200 females in the first stage and 410 females in the second stage (205 females with telogen effluvium as cases, and 205 females without telogen effluvium as controls) were studied. Females with positive pull test and without exclusion criteria were considered as telogen effluvium. In both case and control groups, CRP and serum ferritin tests were done. Correlation of variables with hair loss and serum ferritin level was evaluated. Chi Square test, Student’s T test and Mann Whitney Test were taken for statistical analysis in SPSS ver. 16 software. Multiple logistic regressions were used for statistical modeling. Results: Median (range) of serum ferritin level in the case group was 18.7µg/L (0.7-174.5µg/L) but in the control group it was 22.1µg/L (2.8-167.9µg/L) (P=0.01). In 93 (45.4%) females of the case group and in 71 (34.6%) females in the control group ferritin level was lower than 15µg/L (P=0.02). In 1182 (53.7%) of 2200 female hair-loss was detected. In multivariate analysis older age and weight, being housekeeper and smoking were directly associated with hair loss. However, higher monthly income and possession of private house had opposite relationship with hair loss. Conclusion: Hair loss was a prominent problem in females in Qom Province and telogen effluvium was related to iron deficiency. In females in Qom Province, improvement of body iron resources with better nutrition style, administration of iron supplements and fortifying food with iron supplements is recommended.

Background: Surgical wound infection surveillance is an important facet of hospital infection control processes. There are several surveillance methods for surgical site infections. The objective of this study is to evaluate the accuracy of two different surgical site infection surveillance methods. Methods: In this prospective cross sectional study 3020 undergoing surgey in general surgical wards of Imam Khomeini hospital were included. Surveillance methods consisted of review of medical records for postoperative fever and review of nursing daily note for prescription of antibiotics postoperatively and during patient’s discharge. Review of patient’s history and daily records and interview with patient’s surgeon and the head-nurse of the ward considered as a gold standard for surveillance. Results: The postoperative antibiotic consumption especially when considering its duration is a proper method for surgical wound infection surveillance. Accomplishments of a prospective study with postdischarge follow up until 30 days after surgery is recommended. Conclusion: The result of this study showed that postoperative antibiotic surveillance method specially with consideration of the antibiotic usage duration is a proper method for surgical site infection surveillance in general surgery wards. Objective: A prospective cohort study was conducted to investigate sleep status during the early and second trimester of pregnancy in pregnant women on adverse birth outcome, such as preterm birth, low birth weight and small for gestational age. Methods: Multivariable logistic regression models were used to analyze the association of sleep status during the early and second trimester of pregnancy with adverse birth outcomes and generated the odds ratio and 95% confidence interval. Results: 5,418 pregnant women were included in the analysis. In the multivariable model, compared with 7.1–8 h/night, sleep ≤ 7 h/night during second trimester increases the risk of preterm birth (OR: 1.43, 95% CI: 1.12,1.85), and the risk of preterm birth was decreased in pregnant women who slept > 9 h/night (OR: 0.79, 95% CI: 0.53,0.93). Sleep quality, and sleep changes in the early and second trimesters, and sleep duration in the early pregnancy were not statistically associated with preterm birth, low birth weight and small for gestational age. Conclusions: Short sleep duration during pregnancy is associated with a higher risk of preterm birth and longer sleep duration at night is associated with a lower risk of preterm birth, but the latter needs further verification. Sleep status during pregnancy was not associated with low birth weight and small for gestational age. Highlights: This review provides a detailed account of engineered plant cell wall (CW)-mimetic soft materials, which are designed to replicate the intricate composition, structure, and mechanical properties of natural plant CWs. Experimental methods to create CW-like materials are reviewed, and relevant characterization techniques, including mechanical, chemical, structural, and morphological analyses, are discussed. The applications of CW-like materials in several fields, including food packaging, edible films, drug delivery, construction materials, and biocatalysis are highlighted. Plant cell wall (CW)-like soft materials, referred to as artificial CWs, are composites of assembled polymers containing micro-/nanoparticles or fibers/fibrils that are designed to mimic the composition, structure, and mechanics of plant CWs. CW-like materials have recently emerged to test hypotheses pertaining to the intricate structure–property relationships of native plant CWs or to fabricate functional materials. Here, research on plant CWs and CW-like materials is reviewed by distilling key studies on biomimetic composites primarily composed of plant polysaccharides, including cellulose, pectin, and hemicellulose, as well as organic polymers like lignin. Micro- and nanofabrication of plant CW-like composites, characterization techniques, and in silico studies are reviewed, with a brief overview of current and potential applications. Micro-/nanofabrication approaches include bacterial growth and impregnation, layer-by-layer assembly, film casting, 3-dimensional templating microcapsules, and particle coating. Various characterization techniques are necessary for the comprehensive mechanical, chemical, morphological, and structural analyses of plant CWs and CW-like materials. CW-like materials demonstrate versatility in real-life applications, including biomass conversion, pulp and paper, food science, construction, catalysis, and reaction engineering. This review seeks to facilitate the rational design and thorough characterization of plant CW-mimetic materials, with the goal of advancing the development of innovative soft materials and elucidating the complex structure–property relationships inherent in native CWs. The overactivated immune cells in the infectious lesion may lead to irreversible organ damages under severe infections. However, clinically used immunosuppressive anti‐inflammatory drugs will usually disturb immune homeostasis and conversely increase the risk of infections. Regulating the balance between anti‐inflammation and anti‐infection is thus critical in treating certain infectious diseases. Herein, considering that hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), myeloperoxidase (MPO), and neutrophils are upregulated in the inflammatory microenvironment and closely related to the severity of appendectomy patients, an inflammatory‐microenvironment‐responsive nanomedicine is designed by using poly(lactic‐co‐glycolic) acid (PLGA) nanoparticles to load chlorine E6 (Ce6), a photosensitizer, and luminal (Lum), a chemiluminescent agent. The obtained Lum/Ce6@PLGA nanoparticles, being non‐toxic within normal physiological environment, can generate cytotoxic single oxygen via bioluminescence resonance energy transfer (BRET) in the inflammatory microenvironment with upregulated H2O2 and MPO, simultaneously killing pathogens and excessive inflammatory immune cells in the lesion, without disturbing immune homeostasis. As evidenced in various clinically relevant bacterial infection models and virus‐induced pneumonia, Lum/Ce6@PLGA nanoparticles appeared to be rather effective in controlling both infection and inflammation, resulting in significantly improved animal survival. Therefore, the BRET‐based nanoparticles by simultaneously controlling infections and inflammation may be promising nano‐therapeutics for treatment of severe infectious diseases. This study determines that morbidity presents a mediating impact between intimate partner violence against women and labor productivity in terms of absenteeism and presenteeism. Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was used on a nationwide representative sample of 357 female owners of micro-firms in Peru. The resulting data reveals that morbidity is a mediating variable between intimate partner violence against women and absenteeism (β = 0.213; p <.001), as well as between intimate partner violence against women and presenteeism (β = 0.336; p <.001). This finding allows us to understand how such intimate partner violence against women negatively affects the workplace productivity in the context of a micro-enterprise, a key element in many economies across the world. Afghan refugees child labourers face many challenges as they are labelled as refugees. In an attempt to explore these challenges, the present study was conducted in Tehran with a qualitative approach. The present qualitative research was conducted using a conventional content analysis approach with 25 Afghan child labourers in 2022 in Tehran. Child labourers were selected through purposive and snowball sampling and interviewed in a semi-in-depth interview. The data were analysed based on Granheim and Lundman's criteria, as well as those of Guba and Lincoln, to further enrich the findings. A total of 3 categories, 13 sub-categories, and 183 initial codes were extracted from the data analysis, including: "psychological challenges" (history of harassment and abuse, negative effects, high-risk behaviours, and family detachment); "health challenges" (physical problems, inappropriate accommodation, medical/therapeutic problems, and health threats); and "social challenges" (neglected childhood, dual identity, educational limitations, inadequate social support, social isolation, and social humiliation). At the individual level, it is possible to meet the child labourers' health needs and make them aware of the hazards of working in the streets through physical examination at certain intervals and holding training workshops on harassment prevention, anger control, prevention of high-risk behaviours, prevention of infectious diseases such as hepatitis, and strengthening self-confidence to improve health. Also, the Afghan child labourers' work could be intervened at the social and familial level by providing accommodation in more suitable neighbourhoods, providing health insurance for child labourers, creating the chances of studying in schools, preventing dropouts, and strengthening social relations in order to improve children's health. Our study aimed to investigate the relationship between sleep–wake changes and depressive symptoms events among midlife women. We enrolled 1579 women aged 44–56 years who had no clinically relevant depressive symptoms at baseline. Depressive symptoms were assessed at each visit using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale. At the third and fourth follow-up visits, women reported their sleep habits. The sleep midpoint was defined as the time to fall asleep plus one-half of the sleep duration. Sleep–wake changes were determined by the difference in the midpoint of sleep between the third and fourth visits, which were 1 year apart. The median follow-up time was 7 years (range 1–7 years). Cox proportional hazard models were fitted to calculate hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals for the incidence of depressive symptoms associated with sleep–wake changes. After adjusting for potential confounding factors, the hazard ratio (95% confidence interval) of depressive symptoms for severe sleep midpoint changes was 1.51 (1.12, 2.05) compared with mild sleep midpoint changes. This relationship remained statistically significant and changed little when additionally controlling for sleep duration, sleep quality, insomnia symptoms, use of sleep medications, use of nervous medications, glucose, insulin, lipids, dietary energy intake, and C-reactive protein. Our findings indicate that exposure to long-term severe sleep–wake changes increases the risk of depressive symptoms in midlife women. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The timing of elective surgery could affect clinical outcome because of diurnal rhythms of patient physiology as well as surgical team performance. Waiting times for elective surgery are increasing in many countries, leading to increasing interest in undertaking elective surgery in the evening or at night. We aimed to systematically review the literature on the effect of the timing of elective (but not urgent or emergency) surgery on mortality, morbidity and other clinical outcomes., Methods: We searched databases for relevant studies combining the terms 'circadian rhythm' and 'anaesthesia/surgery'. Additional relevant articles were found by hand-searching the references. All studies were screened for bias. Included studies examined daytime vs. evening/night-time surgery, morning vs. afternoon surgery, multiple timeslots or used time as a continuous variable., Results: Nineteen retrospective cohort studies, one prospective cohort study and one randomised controlled trial were included (n = 798,914). Evening/night-time elective surgery was associated with a higher risk of mortality when compared with daytime procedures in three studies (n = 611,230), with odds ratios (95%CI) for mortality ranging from 1.35 (1.16-1.56) to 3.98 (1.54-10.30), while no differences were found in three other studies (n = 142,355). No differences were found for morning vs. afternoon surgery (four studies, n = 3277). However, most studies had a low quality of evidence due to their retrospective nature and because not all studies corrected for patient characteristics. Moreover, the studies were heterogeneous in terms of the reported time slots and clinical outcomes., Conclusions: We found that evening/night-time elective surgery is associated with a higher risk of mortality compared with daytime surgery. However, the quality of evidence was graded as low, and thus, future prospective research should publish individual patient data and standardise outcome measures to allow firm conclusions and facilitate interventions., (© 2024 The Author(s). Background: Regularity of menstrual cycles is an important indicator of women's health and fertility, and female workers are exposed to several factors, such as sleep disorders, stress, and shift work, that affect their menstrual regularity. This makes it necessary to comprehensively identify the determinants of menstrual regularity. Therefore, this study identified the factors affecting menstrual regularity among female workers from physiological, psychological, and situational dimensions based on the theory of unpleasant symptoms. Methods: This was a secondary analysis of the 2010–2012 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and utilized the data of 2418 female workers. Based on the theory of unpleasant symptoms, physiological factors included age, age at menarche, childbirth experience, body mass index, and sleep duration. Psychological factors included stress level, depressive mood, and suicidal ideation. Situational factors included education level, household income, consumption of alcohol, engagement in smoking, and work schedule. The χ²-test and hierarchical logistic regression analysis were performed, reflecting the complex sample design. Results: Age at menarche, childbirth experience, and body mass index among physiological factors and education level and work schedule among situational factors were found to be related to menstrual regularity. A higher risk of menstrual irregularities was found among those who had given birth (versus those who had not), had a high age at menarche (versus those with a low age at menarche), were obese (versus those who had a normal body mass index), had elementary school-level or lesser educational achievements (versus those with college graduate-level or higher educational achievements), and who had a shift work schedule (versus those with a fixed schedule). Conclusions: Intervention is needed for female workers who have these risk factors, and special attention must be paid to female workers who have a shift work schedule. Soils exhibit structural heterogeneity across diverse spatio-temporal scales, yielding myriad of microhabitats, highlighting the need for a nuanced understanding of the intricate interactions within the soil matrix. At the nanometer scale, the interplay among organic matter (OM), mineral particles, and microbiota intricately govern the long-term destiny of soil carbon (C), nutrient cycling, and the fate of both organic and inorganic pollutants. Notably, the sorption of soil organic matter (SOM) onto smaller clay particles and its entrapment in microaggregates further contribute to this complex dynamic. Understanding these processes depends on recognizing their scale-dependent nature, necessitating sophisticated techniques for investigation. Although various methods are employed across scales, the current set of techniques still lacks the requisite sensitivity and resolution for microscale data collection. To address this limitation, the adoption of novel microscopic and spectroscopic techniques capable of probing molecular, isotopic, and elemental patterns at the micro to nano scale becomes imperative. Among these cutting-edge methodologies, the nano-scale secondary ion mass spectrometer (NanoSIMS) emerges as a paradigm-shifting tool. Representing the latest evolution in ion microprobes, NanoSIMS seamlessly integrates high-resolution microscopy and isotopic analysis, maintaining unparalleled signal transmission and spatial resolution, reaching as fine as 50 nm. Its capabilities extend beyond conventional applications in science, as evidenced by recent breakthroughs in utilizing NanoSIMS to study biophysical interfaces in soils. This article underscores the pressing need to advance the incorporation of NanoSIMS as a pioneering instrumentation technique in soil studies. Background: More is to be explored between dietary patterns and sleep quality in the Chinese adult population. Methods: A cross-sectional study including 7987 Shanghai suburban adults aged 20–74 years was conducted. Dietary information was obtained using a validated food frequency questionnaire. Adherence to a priori dietary patterns, such as the Chinese Healthy Eating Index (CHEI), Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet and Mediterranean diet (MD), was assessed. Sleep quality was assessed from self-reported responses to the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire. Logistic regression models adjusting for confounders were employed to examine the associations. Results: The overall prevalence of poor sleep (PSQI score ≥ 5) was 28.46%. Factor analysis demonstrated four a posteriori dietary patterns. Participants with a higher CHEI (ORQ4 vs. Q1: 0.81, 95% CI: 0.70–0.95), DASH (ORQ4 vs. Q1: 0.70, 95% CI: 0.60–0.82) or MD (ORQ4 vs. Q1: 0.75, 95% CI: 0.64–0.87) had a lower poor sleep prevalence, while participants with a higher "Beverages" score had a higher poor sleep prevalence (ORQ4 vs. Q1: 1.18, 95% CI: 1.02–1.27). Conclusions: In Shanghai suburban adults, healthier dietary patterns and lower consumption of beverages were associated with better sleep quality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Globally, child labor and maltreatment are considered serious public health concerns. Many child laborers in the informal sector are subjected to psychological abuse and neglect that is often akin to slavery. Our study examined the prevalence of these two forms of maltreatment among child laborers in rural Bangladesh, as well as the associated risk factors. Based on the snowball sampling technique, this study surveyed 100 child laborers employed in agricultural and domestic work in rural areas of the Sunamganj district, Bangladesh. The structured questionnaire utilizes the ICAST-CH instrument. To analyze the data, both simple and multiple linear regression analyses were conducted using two statistical software packages, SPSS and STATA. The study concluded that more than half of the child laborers have experienced psychological maltreatment "sometimes" in the form of being screamed at and insulted over the past year. In the past year, over 40% of respondents indicated they were "sometimes" deprived of food and drink and were not well cared for when they became ill. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that parents of psychologically maltreated child laborers had low educational backgrounds. A higher risk of neglect was observed among child laborers who worked for extended hours for their employers and whose families possessed limited land. In spite of the high prevalence of psychological maltreatment and neglect of child laborers in Bangladesh, the issue appears to be ignored. The purpose of this study was to explore financial strategies that intimate partner violence (IPV) survivors undertake when engaging in safety planning and to examine the relationship between these strategies and various survivor characteristics. As part of the cross-sectional study, a total of 425 female survivors of IPV were surveyed. To examine the relationship between financial safety planning strategies and participants' demographic characteristics, abuse experiences, and financial knowledge, binomial logistic regression analyses were conducted. Factors associated with financial safety planning varied by strategy; ethnicity and nativity were often significantly associated. Background: Recent technological advances have led to a surge in the use of wearable devices for personal health and fitness monitoring; however, clinical uptake of wearable devices for remote or 'free-living' measurement of daily health-related behavior has lagged. To advance the field, there is need for valid and reliable outcomes across multiple health domains specific to the cohorts or patients of interest and centralized tools to build capacity for use of these data. The NiMBaLWear pipeline provides a flexible and integrated approach to wearables analytics applied to raw sensor data that considers multiple, inter-related physiological and behavioral signals to provide a holistic view of health status. Results & discussion: NiMBaLWear is a modular, open-source, wearable sensor analytic pipeline that quantifies physical activity, mobility, and sleep from raw single- or multi-sensor free-living data collected over multiple days. Data captured from any device, in different possible formats, are standardized prior to processing. Data preparation includes accelerometer autocalibration, cross-device synchronization, and non-wear detection. Validated, domain-specific algorithms detect events, generate outcome measures, and output standardized tabular data and user-friendly summary collection reports. NiMBaLWear was developed in Python using an iterative and incremental software development process, which included a combination of semi-automated inspection and expert review of data collected from 286 participants across two remote-measurement studies. A comparative analysis revealed a paucity of open-source packages capable of deriving and sharing health-related behavioral outcomes across multiple domains from multi-sensor wearables data. Forthcoming improvements to the pipeline will leverage sensor fusion techniques to add new, and refine existing, domain- and disease-specific analytics, and optimize pipeline accessibility and reporting. Conclusion: The NiMBaLWear pipeline transforms raw multi-sensor wearables data into accurate and relevant outcomes across multiple health domains to objectively characterize and measure an individual's daily health-related behavior. NiMBaLWear's focus on high-quality, clinically relevant outcomes, as well as end-user optimization, provides a foundation for innovation to improve the utility of wearables for clinical care and self-management of health. Economic abuse (EA) is a form of intimate partner violence (IPV) whereby abusers employ various tactics to control their partners' ability to acquire, access, and maintain economic resources thus threatening their economic security and potential for self-sufficiency. It poses a global public health challenge as economic concern is a significant reason for the observed persistent high prevalence of IPV given that even when women want to leave abusive relationships, they are less likely to if they lack the means to cater for themselves and their children upon doing so. However, very few studies in Nigeria have focused on EA. The current study assessed the prevalence and correlates of EA among a Nigerian population of married women. Survey responses of 480 randomly selected married women were used for analysis. The prevalence of EA among respondents was found to be 64.2% while that for emotional abuse, sexual abuse, and physical abuse were 40.2%, 17.3%, and 16.7%, respectively. EA was also found to be significantly associated with other forms of IPV such as physical abuse, emotional abuse, and sexual abuse. The study findings add to the literature by highlighting the high prevalence of EA among Nigerian women. It also underscores the importance of empowering women to minimize victimization. There is growing interest in economic abuse as a form of violence against women, but the research has largely addressed cohabiting couples thus far, with few detailed explorations of women's experiences of economic abuse in postseparation life. Using interviews with 11 women experiencing intimate partner violence (IPV), this study investigates the types of economic abuse in the lives of these women. Inductive thematic analysis revealed four types of postseparation economic abuse (PSEA): economic sabotage, withholding resources, financial harassment, and stealing. These results help better understand and recognize the different forms of PSEA. Recommendations are provided for incorporating PSEA as a central component of IPV research, practice, and policy. Sleep is rigorously controlled by circadian rhythms, and any discrepancy between these rhythms and the external environment might result in circadian rhythm sleep disorders. Circadian rhythm sleep disturbances (CRSDs) are linked to detrimental health outcomes, including cancer and psychiatric illnesses. This systematic literature review explores the significance of disturbances of sleep and circadian rhythm. A systematic literature survey was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases. We used the following search terms: "Circadian clock," "sleep," "Circadian rhythm," sleep disorders," "drugs to cure sleep and circadian rhythm," and "CRSD." for articles published between 2018 and 2023. This comprehensive review presents evidence from human research to assess the concept that sleep and circadian rhythms have direct effects on physiological processes in the human body and are significant underlying factors contributing to major health concerns. The first part of this review focussed on sleep and circadian rhythm, circadian clock and effects of altered metabolism." The second part discussed recent evidence that the circadian clock system plays a fundamental rolein health risk, adverse effects on health, and their connection with disturbances of sleep and circadian rhythm. Secondary vascular tissue (SVT) development and regeneration are regulated by phytohormones. In this study, we used an in vitro SVT regeneration system to demonstrate that gibberellin (GA) treatment significantly promotes auxin‐induced cambium reestablishment. Altering GA content by overexpressing or knocking down ent‐kaurene synthase (KS) affected secondary growth and SVT regeneration in poplar. The poplar DELLA gene GIBBERELLIC ACID INSENSITIVE (PtoGAI) is expressed in a specific pattern during secondary growth and cambium regeneration after girdling. Overexpression of PtoGAI disrupted poplar growth and inhibited cambium regeneration, and the inhibition of cambium regeneration could be partially restored by GA application. Further analysis of the PtaDR5:GUS transgenic plants, the localization of PIN‐FORMED 1 (PIN1) and the expression of auxin‐related genes found that an additional GA treatment could enhance the auxin response as well as the expression of PIN1, which mediates auxin transport during SVT regeneration. In plant cells, cellulose synthase complexes (CSCs) are nanoscale machines that synthesize and extrude crystalline cellulose microfibrils (CMFs) into the apoplast where CMFs are assembled with other matrix polymers into specific structures. We report the tissue-specific directionality of CSC movements of the xylem and interfascicular fiber walls of Arabidopsis stems, inferred from the polarity of CMFs determined using vibrational sum frequency generation spectroscopy. CMFs in xylems are deposited in an unidirectionally biased pattern with their alignment axes tilted about 25° off the stem axis, while interfascicular fibers are bidirectional and highly aligned along the longitudinal axis of the stem. These structures are compatible with the design of fiber-reinforced composites for tubular conduit and support pillar, respectively, suggesting that during cell development, CSC movement is regulated to produce wall structures optimized for cell-specific functions. Regular exercise is believed to suppress cancer progression. However, the precise molecular mechanisms by which exercise prevents cancer development remain unclear. In this study, using a steatosis-associated liver cancer mouse model, we found that regular exercise at a speed of 18 m/min for 20 min daily suppressed liver cancer development. To explore the underlying mechanisms, we examined the gene expression profiles in the livers of the exercise and non-exercise groups. The expressions of circadian genes, such as Per1 and Cry2, were upregulated in the exercise group. As circadian rhythm disruption is known to cause various diseases, including cancer, improving circadian rhythm through exercise could contribute to cancer prevention. We further found that the expression of a series of E2F1 and c-Myc target genes that directly affect the proliferation of cancer cells was downregulated in the exercise group. However, the expression of E2F1 and c-Myc was transcriptionally unchanged but degraded at the post-translational level by exercise. Cry2, which is regulated by the Skp1-Cul1-FBXL3 (SCF FBXL3 ) ubiquitin ligase complex by binding to FBXL3, can form a complex with E2F1 and c-Myc, which we think is the mechanism to degrade them. Background and Objectives: Patients with dyspepsia suffer from psychological problems that require therapeutic interventions. The present study was conducted with the aim of determining the effectiveness of cognitive therapy based on mindfulness on cognitive flexibility and psychological disturbance in patients with dyspepsia. Materials and Methods: The current research was quasi-experimental with a pretest and posttest design and a control group. The statistical population included patients aged 25 to 50 years with dyspepsia diagnosed at Tuba Gastroenterology Clinic in Sari and Qaim Shahr Cities in 2020. Thirty patients were selected by convenience sampling method and randomly (lottery) assigned in an experimental group (15 people) and a control group (15 people). The experimental group received cognitive therapy based on mindfulness (8 sessions), once a week for 90 minutes, and the control group did not receive training. Data collection was done using Dennis and Vander Wal's Cognitive Flexibility Questionnaire and Lovibond's Psychological Disturbance Questionnaire. Multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) was used to analyze the data. Results: According to the results of this research, cognitive therapy based on mindfulness had an effect on cognitive flexibility and psychological disturbance in patients with dyspepsia (p<0.001). The mean and standard deviation of the experimental group's cognitive flexibility in the pretest was 47.53±5.11 and in the posttest 61.80±7.23 and the psychological disturbance of the experimental group in the pretest was 59.40±6.38 and in the posttest 44.35±4.28 (p<0.001). Conclusion: The results of the study showed that cognitive therapy based on mindfulness is effective on cognitive flexibility and psychological disturbance in patients with dyspepsia. Therefore, the use of cognitive therapy approach based on mindfulness is recommended by counselors and therapists to reduce the psychological problems of patients with dyspepsia. Physcomitrium patens is a good model system to study the structure and function relationships of cellulose synthase (CESA) proteins since the life cycle of moss is short and genetic modification is relatively easy. Here, we report a microscopic sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy analysis of P. patens leaves in a never-dried and fully hydrated state. Using imaging-SFG spectroscopy, cellulose microfibril (CMF) organization in the midrib, laminar, and marginal regions of the gametophore leaf were analyzed separately. The azimuth angle dependence of SFG signals showed that CMFs in the thick stereid cell walls in the midrib are highly aligned along the microfibril angle of ~ 30° with respect to the midrib axis. CMFs in the marginal cell walls also are preferentially tilted toward the longitudinal axis of leaf with the characteristic features of secondary cell walls. On the other hand, CMFs in the lamina cell walls have no preferential orientation and their SFG intensity is low, which is consistent with the primary cell wall property. Background: Working as a child can have various effects on all aspects of children's health. Investigating and identifying issues related to the health of working children can be useful in promoting their health. Therefore, in this qualitative study, we examined issues related to the mental health and behavior of working children. Materials and Methods: This qualitative study was conducted in Tehran, Iran, in 2021 with the contractual content analysis approach. The main participants (N = 32) in this study were working children aged 10 to 18 years. To collect data, in depth and semi structured interviews were conducted with working children, their parents, and the center officials. In addition to the interview, some field notes were also taken from interactions between working children. After each interview, they were transcribed and coded. After 27 interviews, the data were saturated, no new code was extracted, and further interviews were conducted to ensure data saturation. Data analysis was performed based on the proposed method of Lundman and Graneheim. Results: The results revealed the three main categories of mental distress (fear and anxiety, depression, loneliness and isolation, decreased self confidence, and decentralized mind), social anger (negative social role modeling, harassment and harm of others, reprehensible and antisocial behavior, disregard for the property of others, disrupted relationships, and violence), and in group commitment (self censorship outside the group, individual independence and group cohesion, and caring for the group). Sleep and circadian rhythms are observed broadly throughout animal phyla and influence neural plasticity and cognitive function. However, the few phylogenetically conserved cellular and molecular pathways that are implicated in these processes are largely focused on neuronal cells. Research on these topics has traditionally segregated sleep homeostatic behavior from circadian restactivity rhythms. Here we posit an alternative perspective, whereby mechanisms underlying the integration of sleep and circadian rhythms that affect behavioral state, plasticity, and cognition reside within glial cells. The brain-type fatty acid binding protein, FABP7, is part of a larger family of lipid chaperone proteins that regulate the subcellular trafficking of fatty acids for a wide range of cellular functions, including gene expression, growth, survival, inflammation, and metabolism. FABP7 is enriched in glial cells of the central nervous system and has been shown to be a clock-controlled gene implicated in sleep/wake regulation and cognitive processing. FABP7 is known to affect gene transcription, cellular outgrowth, and its subcellular localization in the fine perisynaptic astrocytic processes (PAPs) varies based on time-of-day. Future studies determining the effects of FABP7 on behavioral state- and circadian-dependent plasticity and cognitive processes, in addition to functional consequences on cellular and molecular mechanisms related to neural-glial interactions, lipid storage, and blood brain barrier integrity will be important for our knowledge of basic sleep function. Given the comorbidity of sleep disturbance with neurological disorders, these studies will also be important for our understanding of the etiology and pathophysiology of how these diseases affect or are affected by sleep. Summary: This study aims to determine the association between social jetlag and parameters of metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes (T2D) in a systematic review and meta‐analysis. A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed/Embase/Scopus until May 2022. Included studies described an association between social jetlag and parameters of the metabolic syndrome and/or T2D, were available full text and written in English or Dutch. Data extraction and quality assessment were performed on pre‐piloted forms independently by two reviewers. Results were meta‐analysed using random‐effects analysis. A total of 6,290 titles/abstracts were screened, 176 papers were read full‐text, 68 studies were included. Three studies were rated as low quality, 27 were moderate, and 38 were high quality. High quality studies showed that having social jetlag compared to no social jetlag was significantly associated with higher body mass index in 20 studies (0.49 kg/m2, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.21–0.77; I2 = 100%), higher waist circumference in seven studies (1.11 cm, 95% CI 0.42–1.80; I2 = 25%), higher systolic blood pressure in 10 studies (0.37 mmHg, 95% CI 0.00–0.74; I2 = 94%) and higher glycated haemoglobin in 12 studies (0.42%, 95% CI 0.12– 0.72; I2 = 100%). No statistically significant associations were found for obesity, abdominal obesity, high‐ and low‐density lipoprotein levels, cholesterol, triglycerides, diastolic blood pressure, hypertension, fasting glucose, homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome or T2D. Sensitivity analyses did not reduce heterogeneity. Despite substantial heterogeneity, social jetlag is associated with certain parameters of the metabolic syndrome and T2D, but not with prevalent metabolic syndrome or T2D. These findings should be interpreted with caution as the level of evidence is low and mostly based on cross‐sectional data. Purpose: This study aimed to examine the relationship between sleep quality and its influencing factors in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Methods: This descriptive correlational study included 130 patients with CAD admitted to the cardiology department of a general hospital in B City between September 2019 and February 2020. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and research instruments to measure sleep quality, anxiety, depression, chronotype, and daytime sleepiness. Results: The mean scores for sleep quality, daytime sleepiness, anxiety, and depression were 7.59±3.45, 6.45±3.46, 6.58±3.88, and 7.74±4.05, respectively. In terms of chronotypes, 10.8%, 48.5%, and 40.7% of the participants had evening-, intermediate-, and morning-type patterns, respectively. Sleep quality was significantly correlated with anxiety (r=0.38, p < .001), depression (r=.37, p < .001), and daytime sleepiness (r=.26, p =.002). Factors associated with sleep quality in patients with CAD included anxiety (β=.29), heart failure (β=.22), daytime sleepiness (β=.21), and sleeping alone (β=.19). Collectively, these factors had an explanatory power of 23.1% for sleep quality variance. Conclusion: Patients with CAD often experience poor sleep quality owing to various factors such as anxiety, daytime sleepiness, heart failure, and sleeping alone. It is recommended that healthcare providers objectively evaluate sleep and identify factors that influence sleep quality. Our experience with business and economic students indicates limited understanding and confidence when working with macroeconomic data such as unemployment rate, labor force participation rate, business cycles, and price indexes. To close this gap, the authors have developed and evaluated a college classroom experiential activity defined as the Storytelling Project (SP) conducted in nine principles of economics courses in a mid-size private university over a period of two years during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the SP, students wrote personal stories that assisted them in connecting with their audience and then visually presented complex economic data. A workbook supplemented the SP with learning objectives, tasks, multiple examples of data analysis, storytelling techniques, and videos. Participants completed a self-efficacy and attitude survey of perceived cognition, confidence, and motivation and took an assessment to evaluate cognitive competencies. The survey and assessment results were compared against students who did not complete the SP. Our results indicate that the SP and the workbook are effective experiential learning activities that improve data analysis and communication skills among college students. Students show more confidence and motivation in macroeconomics and data analysis at the end of the semester. Knowledge or cognitive competency is ranked higher among those completing the SP. In viral infections, natural killer (NK) cells exhibit anti-viral activity by inducing apoptosis in infected host cells and impeding viral replication through heightened cytokine release. Extracellular vesicles derived from NK cells (NK-EVs) also contain the membrane composition, homing capabilities, and cargo that enable anti-viral activity. These characteristics, and their biocompatibility and low immunogenicity, give NK-EVs the potential to be a viable therapeutic platform. This study characterizes the size, EV-specific protein expression, cell internalization, biocompatibility, and anti-viral miRNA cargo to evaluate the anti-viral properties of NK-EVs. After 48 h of NK-EV incubation in inflamed A549 lung epithelial cells, or conditions that mimic lung viral infections such as during COVID-19, cells treated with NK-EVs exhibit upregulated anti-viral miRNA cargo (miR-27a, miR-27b, miR-369-3p, miR-491-5p) compared to the non-treated controls and cells treated with control EVs derived from lung epithelial cells. Additionally, NK-EVs effectively reduce expression of viral RNA and pro-inflammatory cytokine (TNF-α, IL-8) levels in SARS-CoV-2 infected Vero E6 kidney epithelial cells and in infected mice without causing tissue damage while significantly decreasing pro-inflammatory cytokine compared to non-treated controls. Sleep disorders can impact daily life, affecting physical, emotional, and cognitive well-being. Due to the time-consuming, highly obtrusive, and expensive nature of using the standard approaches such as polysomnography, it is of great interest to develop a noninvasive and unobtrusive in-home sleep monitoring system that can reliably and accurately measure cardiorespiratory parameters while causing minimal discomfort to the user's sleep. We developed a low-cost Out of Center Sleep Testing (OCST) system with low complexity to measure cardiorespiratory parameters. We tested and validated two force-sensitive resistor strip sensors under the bed mattress covering the thoracic and abdominal regions. Twenty subjects were recruited, including 12 males and 8 females. The ballistocardiogram signal was processed using the 4th smooth level of the discrete wavelet transform and the 2nd order of the Butterworth bandpass filter to measure the heart rate and respiration rate, respectively. We reached a total error (concerning the reference sensors) of 3.24 beats per minute and 2.32 rates for heart rate and respiration rate, respectively. For males and females, heart rate errors were 3.47 and 2.68, and respiration rate errors were 2.32 and 2.33, respectively. We developed and verified the reliability and applicability of the system. It showed a minor dependency on sleeping positions, one of the major cumbersome sleep measurements. We identified the sensor under the thoracic region as the optimal configuration for cardiorespiratory measurement. Although testing the system with healthy subjects and regular patterns of cardiorespiratory parameters showed promising results, further investigation is required with the bandwidth frequency and validation of the system with larger groups of subjects, including patients. Herein, we have developed highly sensitive and selective non‐enzymatic bioinspired polydopamine derived nitrogen rich carbon (NC) coated bimetallic zeolitic imidazolate framework (BM‐ZIF) electrochemical sensor via simple hydrothermal approach for monitoring adrenaline (AD) from COVID‐19 quarantined person blood and pharmaceutical sample. The designed NC‐BM‐ZIF electrode shows excellent sensitive and selective performance towards AD monitoring with detection limit (LOD) of 0.01 nM and 0.1931 μA/nM/cm2 sensitivity over a wide linear range of 50–1625 nM. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study of using of NC‐BM‐ZIF electrode for the electrochemical sensing of AD from quarantined person blood and pharmaceutical sample. Background and Objective: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a clinical and social problem globally, especially in the Middle East. This study aimed to analyze the prevalence of IPV and its types against women in the Middle East region. Method: PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched in January 2020. From 1995 to 2020, all studies performed in the Middle East, investigating at least one type of abuse against women and written in English, entered the study. All included studies were appraised using Joanna Briggs Institute Checklist, which was adapted for prevalence studies. The random effect model of meta-analysis was performed using the Mantel–Haenszel method by comprehensive meta-analysis software. Each type of abuse as event rate with 95% CI was calculated for each variable. Heterogeneity was investigated using the I 2 statistic test. Results: Fifty-five studies encompassing 138,692 participants were included in our meta-analysis. The rate of overall abuse was 26.3 (n = 55, 95% CI: [15.8, 40.5], p =.002). The highest rate of abuse in the included studies was reported for psychological abuse 48.6% (n = 46, 95% CI: [39.8, 57.5], p =.758). The rate of abuse for physical, economical, sexual, and injury were 28.4% (n = 53, 95% CI: [22.1, 35.7], p =.0001), 19% (n = 10, 95% CI: [9.8, 33.7], p =.0001), 18.5% (n = 45, 95% CI: [13.6, 24.6], p =.0001), and 18.4% (n = 5, 95% CI: [7.1, 40.2], p = 0.008), respectively. The overall abuse reported by World Health Organization Multi-Country Domestic Violence (DV)Questionnaire was 25.7% (n = 17, 95% CI: [18.4, 34.7], p =.0001). This value was 41.8% (n = 11, 95% CI: [29.7, 55], p =.223) for the Conflict Tactics Scale Questionnaire. Conclusion: Although this review highlights the lack of or insufficient IPV data in some contexts and inconsistencies in defining and measuring IPV among studies, the evidence shows that a moderate to high pattern of abuse has been observed in the study population. Circadian rhythms are generated by the circadian clock, a self-sustained internal timing system that exhibits 24-h rhythms in the body. Many metabolic, cellular, behavioral and physiological processes are regulated by the circadian clock in coordination with environmental cues. The present study is a comprehensive review of the currently existing evidence concerning the relationship between circadian rhythms and sleep, metabolic, and cardiovascular disorders. We thoroughly searched the online databases PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science to find the existing clinical studies from the last twenty-three years (2000–2023). Circadian misalignment was found to be associated with an increase in the risk of metabolic disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and obesity, as well as inadequate sleep quality. In this review article, all the included studies had a strength protocol design and all of them were conducted on humans. However, the most common limitations of them were the small sample size and the short time of the intervention. In conclusion, managing the factors that disrupt the optimal function of central and peripheral clocks can help to reduce the risk of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases, improving also sleep quality. Future studies should further explore the underlying mechanisms of the interconnections between circadian clocks and sleep, metabolic, and cardiovascular disorders. Since being FDA approved in 1984, cochlear implantation has been used successfully to restore hearing in those with severe to profound hearing loss with broader applications including single-sided deafness, the use of hybrid electroacoustic stimulation, and implantation at all extremes of age. Cochlear implants have undergone multiple changes in the design aimed at improving the processing technology, while simultaneously minimizing the surgical trauma and foreign body reaction. The following review examines the human temporal bone studies regarding the anatomy of the human cochlea and how the anatomy relates to cochlear implant design, the factors related to complications after implantation, and the predictors of new tissue formation and osteoneogenesis. Economic hardship is a driver of entry into sex work, which is associated with high HIV risk. Yet, little is known about economic abuse in women employed by sex work (WESW) and its relationship to uptake of HIV prevention and financial support services. This study used cross-sectional baseline data from a multisite, longitudinal clinical trial that tests the efficacy of adding economic empowerment to traditional HIV risk reduction education on HIV incidence in 542 WESW. Mixed effects logistic and linear regressions were used to examine associations in reported economic abuse by demographic characteristics, sexual behaviors, HIV care-seeking, and financial care-seeking. Mean age was 31.4 years. Most WESW were unmarried (74%) and had less than primary school education (64%). 48% had savings, and 72% had debt. 93% reported at least one economic abuse incident. Common incidents included being forced to ask for money (80%), having financial information kept from them (61%), and being forced to disclose how money was spent (56%). WESW also reported partners/relatives spending money needed for bills (45%), not paying bills (38%), threatening them to quit their job(s) (38%), and using physical violence when earning income (24%). Married/partnered WESW (OR = 2.68, 95% CI:1.60–4.48), those with debt (OR = 1.70, 95% CI:1.04–2.77), and those with sex-work bosses (OR = 1.90, 95% CI:1.07–3.38) had higher economic abuse. Condomless sex (β = +4.43, p <.05) was higher among WESW experiencing economic abuse, who also had lower odds of initiating PrEP (OR =.39, 95% CI:.17–.89). WESW experiencing economic abuse were also more likely to ask for cash among relatives (OR = 2.36, 95% CI:1.13–4.94) or banks (OR = 2.12, 95% CI:1.11–4.03). The high prevalence of HIV and economic abuse in WESW underscores the importance of integrating financial empowerment in HIV risk reduction interventions for WESW, including education about economic abuse and strategies to address it. The study of synthetic biology focusing on biosensor systems has resulted from a growing interest in developing customized biological devices with desired cellular functions. Recently, biosensors have been used for a variety of medical applications such as disease diagnosis, prevention, rehabilitation, patient health monitoring, and human health management. Meanwhile, the ability to track biomarkers based on biosensors allows researchers and medical practitioners to provide patients with individualized treatment regimens and health management. Biosensors that respond to electrochemical, optical, thermal, piezoelectric and magnetic signals have been developed and utilized for various disease therapies and biomedical applications. This study reviews recent developments in biosensor-based therapeutic tools by sensing diverse biomarkers in many diseases (e.g. cancer, infections, metabolic diseases), such as physical biomarkers (e.g. pressure, temperature) and chemical biomarkers (e.g. dissolved oxygen, glucose). Additionally, we highlight the challenges and problems of biosensor-based therapeutics and possible solutions for biosensor engineering thereof. Current biosensors enable for coarsely programable personal treatment and health management, however, new sensors with optimized dose-response functions, for example, fast response and tight-control performances, could significantly boost versatile uses in medical treatment in the coming future. Disposal of health care waste is one of the biggest threats to global sustainable health care. Current practices of dumping domestic and international health care waste into the earth's terra firma and oceans also undermine global health equity by adversely affecting the health of vulnerable communities. While the United Kingdom works toward circular health care economy streams that produce minimal waste, the United States continues to amplify downstream environmental and health effects of health care organizational waste management decisions. This article suggests how to reframe social and ethical responsibility for health care waste production and management by assigning strict accountability to health care organizational leaders, incentivizing circular supply chain implementation and maintenance, and encouraging strong collaborations across medical, plastic, and waste industries. Accumulating data have demonstrated that shift work causes a disturbance in circadian rhythms, which is detrimental to physiology and performance. However, the detailed effects of shift work and especially the underlying mechanisms remain to be further investigated. Frequently shifting schedules are widely used in industries, e.g., maritime tasks, oil mining, and aviation. In this work, we investigated the physiological changes and vigilance of 12 subjects who lived on a 30-day frequent shift working schedule in a confined environment, which mimics the common maritime schedules. Elevated and decreased cortisol levels were observed at different stages during the shift, suggesting the occurrence of stress and fatigue. The results of the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS) indicate increased sleepiness and a changed pattern of the rhythmicity of sleepiness during the shift. The tests of the Psychomotor Vigilance Task (PVT) reveal that the shift led to a continuously decreasing alertness as the shift working schedule progressed, which is prevalently due to the increasingly slower reaction speed. The PVT time-out errors were significantly increased in the early period but decreased in the late period. In addition, we found recoupling of the correlations between multiple physiological and cognitive variables. For instance, heartbeat rate (HR) and breath rate (BR) showed moderate correlations in the control and early periods but little in the late period. Together, these results reveal substantial alterations in diurnal rhythms, affected vigilance and changed coupling of the correlations of diurnal rhythms, physiology and cognition caused by a shift schedule. The effect of the on-going COVID-19 pandemic on global healthcare systems has underlined the importance of timely and cost-effective point-of-care diagnosis of viruses. The need for ultrasensitive easy-to-use platforms has culminated in an increased interest for rapid response equipment-free alternatives to conventional diagnostic methods such as polymerase chain reaction, western-blot assay, etc. Furthermore, the poor stability and the bleaching behavior of several contemporary fluorescent reporters is a major obstacle in understanding the mechanism of viral infection thus retarding drug screening and development. Owing to their extraordinary surface-to-volume ratio as well as their quantum confinement and charge transfer properties, nanomaterials are desirable additives to sensing and imaging systems to amplify their signal response as well as temporal resolution. Their large surface area promotes biomolecular integration as well as efficacious signal transduction. Due to their hole mobility, photostability, resistance to photobleaching, and intense brightness, nanomaterials have a considerable edge over organic dyes for single virus tracking. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art of combining carbon-allotrope, inorganic and organic-based nanomaterials with virus sensing and tracking methods, starting with the impact of human pathogenic viruses on the society. We address how different nanomaterials can be used in various virus sensing platforms (e.g. lab-on-a-chip, paper, and smartphone-based point-of-care systems) as well as in virus tracking applications. We discuss the enormous potential for the use of nanomaterials as simple, versatile, and affordable tools for detecting and tracing viruses infectious to humans, animals, plants as well as bacteria. Background: Egypt has agreed and ratified international regulations that strict child labor. However, the country still struggles with high prevalence of child labor and the associated negative social and health effects. The objective of this study was to identify the prevalence and determinants of work-related injuries among working children in Egypt. Methods: This study involved a secondary data analysis of the National Child Labor Survey (NCLS) conducted in 2010 by The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) in Egypt with technical and financial support from the ILO's International Program on the Elimination of Child Labor (IPEC) through its Statistical Information and Monitoring Program on Child Labor (SIMPOC). The total number of working children who responded to questions of work-related injuries in the NCLS child questionnaire was 7485 children. Results: The prevalence of work-related injuries among working children in Egypt was estimated as 24.1% (95% CI: 22.0%—26.2%), of whom the majority were superficial wounds (87.3%). Among children who reported work-related injuries, 57.9% did not stop work or schooling because of the most serious injury, while 39.6% had stopped temporarily and 2.6% had stopped completely. The main determinants of work-related injuries among working children in the study sample were gender (boys), age of starting work (5–11 years), type of main economic activity (industry and services), type of main workplace (plantation, farms, or garden), the average work hours per week (28 h or more), and exposure to ergonomic and safety, and chemical hazards at work. Conclusions: The estimated high prevalence of work-related injuries among working children aged 5–17 years in Egypt raises the health risks concerns associated with child labor. Findings of this study on the determinants of work-related injuries could guide policies and interventions to combat child labor and the associated health risks, including work-related injuries.
