The Mediterranean Sea represents the lower latitudinal limit of the European sprat range, where it is considered a sentinel species favoring temperate–cold temperatures. Sprattus sprattus is a plankton feeder that plays an important ecological role in contributing to the transfer of energy from lower to higher trophic levels, but climate-driven increases in sea temperatures may reduce the suitability of the pelagic habitat and threaten the tropho-dynamic role of sprat in areas such as the Adriatic Sea. The latter is an enclosed basin characterized by shallow waters and high annual temperature variations. Here, to investigate present and future habitat suitability areas for sprat, we applied four species distribution models (SDMs) using fishery-independent data collected from 2004 to 2021, along with remotely sensed and modeled environmental variables. A set of nine environmental predictors was tested, and the resulting best model was averaged in an ensemble model approach. The best ensemble models revealed good to high accuracy (sensitivity and specificity ≥ 0.8). The sea surface temperature and chlorophyll concentration emerged as the main explanatory variables in predicting the potential habitat of sprats, followed by bathymetry. The resulting probability of occurrence maps revealed that the species is bounded in the northern Adriatic Sea, where a longitudinal shift of high-suitability habitats from inshore to deeper and colder waters was detected between early and late summer. Future projections under IPCC representative concentration pathway (RCP) scenarios 4.5 (intermediate emission) and 8.5 (high emission-warm) underline small changes along with a gain of new areas in late summer in the short-term period up to 2050. Conversely, the temperature increase projected for the end of the century is predicted to cause a loss of suitable habitat area for sprats of up to 88% under a high emission-warm scenario relative to current habitat occupancy throughout the basin.

Abstract Anthropogenic underwater noise is an emergent pollutant. Despite several worldwide monitoring programs, only few data are available for the Mediterranean Sea, one of the global biodiversity hotspots. The results of the first continuous acoustic programme run at a transnational basin scale in the Mediterranean Sea are here presented. Recordings were done from March 2020 to June 2021, including the COVID-19 lockdown, at nine stations in the Northern Adriatic Sea. Spatial–temporal variations of the underwater sound are described, having one third octave band sound pressure levels (SPLs) from 10 Hz to 20 kHz as metrics. Higher and more variable SPLs, mainly related to vessel traffic, were found close to harbours, whereas Natura 2000 stations experienced lower SPLs. Lower values were recorded during the lockdown in five stations. Median yearly SPLs ranged between 64 and 95 as well as 70 and 100 dB re 1 µPa for 63 and 125 Hz bands, respectively. These values are comparable with those previously found in busy shallow EU basins but higher levels are expected during a business-as-usual period. This is a baseline assessment for a highly impacted and environmental valuable area, that needs to be managed in a new sustainable blue growth strategy.

Abstract The lack of data on the species-specific Target Strength (TS) on ancillary species limits the application of acoustic surveys in assessing their abundance and distribution worldwide. The TS values of Scomber colias and Trachurus mediterraneus in use in the Mediterranean Sea rely on studies conducted on other species in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Nevertheless, the application of backscattering models offers the possibility to overcome the absence of empirical data handling the parameters that most affect the TS. X-ray scans were performed on 82 specimens to get digital representations of the swimbladder and the fish body which were used as input for the application of the Kirchhoff Ray Mode model to measure the TS as a function of frequency and tilt angle. The morphometric differences between the two species produced divergent relative frequency responses and broadband TS patterns. Moreover, comparing the results with one ex-situ experiment, we found a good agreement considering a mean tilt angle of − 10°, standard deviation = 12°. Our results provide the first theoretical insights into the use of backscattering models as a tool to distinguish between species in the Mediterranean Sea by acoustic method, increasing the knowledge of the acoustic reflectivity of ancillary species.

Krill is a fundamental resource in the pelagic food web of the Ross Sea, constituting an important link between primary production and top predators. A series of Italian research voyages to the Ross Sea from 1994 to 2016 have contributed to our understanding of the dynamics of krill populations inhabiting the Ross Sea. Only the surveys in 1994 and 2004 reported information on krill’s predators through visual census data, and 2004 data were not object of publication until now. Analyzing Euphausia superba and Euphausia crystallorophias abundance spatial distribution in the study area in relation to the distribution of its key natural predators have shown a significant relationship between the spatial distribution of minke whales’ abundance and the density of E. superba biomass, indicating a classical predator-prey interaction. Moreover, krill biomass density data in the water column were analyzed together with the main environmental data from CTD samplings. The analysis of krill density data in relation to environmental factors throughout the water column revealed a significant relation between E. superba abundance and salinity, a result that may be linked to the presence of ice melting effects improving environment productivity conditions.

Abstract The protection of marine habitats from human-generated underwater noise is an emerging challenge. Baseline information on sound levels, however, is poorly available, especially in the Mediterranean Sea. To bridge this knowledge gap, the SOUNDSCAPE project ran a basin-scale, cross-national, long-term underwater monitoring in the Northern Adriatic Sea. A network of nine monitoring stations, characterized by different natural conditions and anthropogenic pressures, ensured acoustic data collection from March 2020 to June 2021, including the full lockdown period related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Calibrated stationary recorders featured with an omnidirectional Neptune Sonar D60 Hydrophone recorded continuously 24 h a day (48 kHz sampling rate, 16 bit resolution). Data were analysed to Sound Pressure Levels (SPLs) with a specially developed and validated processing app. Here, we release the dataset composed of 20 and 60 seconds averaged SPLs (one-third octave, base 10) output files and a Python script to postprocess them. This dataset represents a benchmark for scientists and policymakers addressing the risk of noise impacts on marine fauna in the Mediterranean Sea and worldwide.

Zooplankton are a pivotal component of the pelagic community, and their abundance and distribution are often strongly dependent on environmental conditions at sea. However, climate change can pose significant challenges to planktonic organisms. Therefore, in this study, we tried to address the possible effect of short-term climatic anomalies on the zooplankton community in the North Adriatic Sea, comparing mesozooplankton composition in June between two years with very different temperature and rainfall levels, i.e., 2019 and 2022. Environmental conditions at sea were significantly different, since 2022 faced rising temperatures in the northern part of the area and higher salinity and lower chlorophyll values in coastal samples. Our data unveiled a community shift, from a Noctiluca-dominated community to a crustacean-dominated one, and revealed that even offshore areas can be subject to changes, despite having quite stable environmental parameters. Our findings confirmed the influence of river inputs and temperature on the Adriatic community’s distribution and composition, highlighting how climate-driven changes could have unpredictable effects on the whole Adriatic ecosystem. Indeed, each species has its own role in ecosystem functioning and climatic anomalies could uncouple the fine-scale connections that make up the pelagic trophic web.

The abundance of gelatinous organisms, such as salps and jellyfish, in the Adriatic Sea has significantly increased over the past decade. Environmental factors play a key role in driving this shift in abundance through rising temperatures and a consequent decrease in oxygen levels in the water, for which jellyfish have higher tolerance levels. Additionally, fisheries may contribute to the proliferation of jellyfish by diminishing their natural predators and food competitors. Pelagic trawl catch data from 2015 to 2023 acquired during MEDIAS acoustic surveys in the western Adriatic Sea were reviewed to extract information concerning the abundance and distribution of salps and jellyfish. These data were subsequently analyzed and compared with satellite environmental information to identify potential correlations. When considering environmental information related to the month of the survey, the results show two significant relationships: one between the abundance of Aequorea aequorea and average salinity and another one between the abundance of Rhizostoma pulmo and bottom temperature. Furthermore, when considering environmental data from the month preceding the survey, a relationship between the overall abundance of gelatinous organisms, salps and jellyfish together, and surface temperature was identified. Additionally, an analysis was conducted on specific hauls that almost exclusively yielded jellyfish, with the aim of identifying their echo traces. Although it was not possible to allocate one jellyfish species to a specific echo trace due to the frequent co-occurrence of more than one species, a general indication of typical backscatter for these species, with a higher response at 70 kHz, was consistently observed in all cases examined.

Krill species are key organisms in the Antarctic food web. Biochemical composition in terms of lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, and fatty acids and its implications for spatial distribution were investigated in specimens of Euphausia superba and Euphausia crystallorophias collected in the Ross Sea and the adjacent Pacific region during an acoustic survey carried out within the framework of the 19th Italian National Program for Research in Antarctica (PNRA) Expedition, to gain insights into their trophic relationships and bioenergetic strategies. In both species, the body biochemical composition (wet) showed a predominance of proteins (62–86%), followed by lipids and carbohydrates, and, among identified lipid classes, the two species did not seem to differ much in fatty acid composition. Results showed the highest dissimilarity in biochemical composition between species relative to differences in latitude (24%) and to inshore/offshore haul (22%). Fatty acid analysis, and particularly PUFA/SFA and 18PUFA/16PUFA ratios, allowed identification of a more pronounced omnivorous kind of diet in E. crystallorophias relative to E. superba.

The Mediterranean is one of the most overfished seas of the world where mesopredators are severely threatened. The trophic strategies of four pelagic species that inhabit the Adriatic Sea (Scomber spp. and Trachurus spp.) were investigated through an integrated approach of stomach contents and stable isotopes analyses. Our study demonstrated that Scomber colias feeds mainly on strictly pelagic prey, with fish larvae as a secondary prey in the Southern Adriatic Sea, while S. scombrus feeds on prey belonging to higher trophic levels. Smaller specimens of Trachurus mediterraneus have a diet mainly based on pelagic prey, while larger fishes rely on prey such as benthic decapods, showing an ontogenetic shift in the diet of the species. Trachurus trachurus shows a preference for offshore and deeper areas and a diet such as that of its congeneric, but no clear ontogenetic shift was observed. This spatial segregation allows the co-existence of these two species of Trachurus. Scomber colias mainly inhabits southern areas and S. scombrus shows a preference for the northern sectors. This latitudinal gradient avoids the overlap of their trophic niches. Bayesian mixing models confirmed that the trophic niches of these species only partially overlap in the middle of the trophic web.

The pelagic ecosystem in the Ross Sea has one central component that is very important for energy exchanges between upper and lower trophic levels: the Middle Trophic Level. Krill species are the most important and abundant organisms within this level. Several acoustic surveys were conducted in the western Ross Sea over the past 25 years, revealing that Euphausia superba is by far the most abundant species of krill in the Ross Sea during austral summer, and that its core distribution is concentrated in the northern part, bordering the Southern Ocean. Euphausia crsytallorophias, the second most abundant krill species, is more concentrated in the central Ross Sea, generally near the coast. Data on krill biomass were collected in December and January from 1994 to 2016 and analyzed together with key environmental parameters by means of two-way ANOVA in order to explain species behavior and identify possible environmental drivers. Temperature and dissolved oxygen influenced the biomass of both species of krill, while other environmental parameters only affected one species. In conclusion, the biomass of both species has varied over the years, possibly due to a complex synergy of environmental drivers.

It is well known that temporal fluctuations in small populations deeply influence evolutionary potential. Less well known is whether fluctuations can influence the evolutionary potentials of species with large census sizes. Here, we estimated genetic population parameters from as survey of polymorphic microsatellite DNA loci in archived otoliths from Adriatic European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus), a fish with large census sizes that supports numerous local fisheries. Stocks have fluctuated greatly over the past few decades, and the Adriatic fishery collapsed in 1987. Our results show a significant reduction of mean genetic parameters as a consequence of the population collapse. In addition, estimates of effective population size (Ne) are much smaller than those expected in a fishes with large population census sizes (Nc). Estimates of Ne indicate low effective population sizes, even before the population collapse. The ratio Ne/Ne ranged between 10-6 and 10-8, indicating a large discrepancy between the anchovy gene pool and population census size. Therefore, anchovy populations may be more vulnerable to fishery effort and environmental change than previously thought.

Simple Summary: In the Adriatic Sea, there is little knowledge concerning the role of medium-sized pelagic fish species such as Scomber spp. and Trachurus spp. in the local food web. To better depict their role, stomach content and stable isotope analyses were performed on specimens caught during routine acoustic surveys carried out along the western Adriatic coast. The results show that the two Trachurus species (T. trachurus and T. mediterraneus) share a similar diet but present spatial segregation along a latitudinal (i.e., thermal) gradient, while the two Scomber species (S. scombrus and S. colias) differ for prey preferences and present spatial segregation too, along a bathymetric gradient. The positions (trophic niches) of these species in the food web only partially overlap.
