Differences in voting patterns of European Russians appear to be influenced by ethnicity, geographic location and age. Analysis of the 1996 presidential election in European Russia revealed anomalous results in Mordovia and five Muslim republics, supporting the assumption that the election in northern republics generally did not seem controlled compared to the southern republics. Russians living in the south voted more conservatively than those in the north.

The relationship between language and ethnicity and the evolution of this relationship is best explored by examining the sociological situations in various countries around the world. Of special note is the situation in the former Soviet Union where the people have just recently thrown off the yoke of language laws dictated by the central political authorities in Moscow.

A random survey of attitudes of Russian adults toward economic, ethnic, national and political issues was conducted in 69 provinces and republics three weeks before the elections on Dec 12, 1993. The Russians revealed sensible and centrist attitudes, ideal for creating a moderate Thermidor that can change Russia in a democratic fashion. The study was conducted by persons from several American institutions: Howard University, Columbia University, Carnegie Foundation, National Science Foundation, Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, and the Brookings Institution.
