Aims: Anal cancer, despite its rarity, is a matter of serious concern in the United States, with an uptrend in recent years and marked racial disparities in mortality rates. The aim of this work was to investigate anal cancer mortality trends and sex race disparities in the United States from 1999 to 2020., Method: This is a retrospective study using data from the CDC WONDER database (1999-2020). We investigated deaths attributed to anal cancer, identified by the ICD-10 code C21.1, and excluded individuals aged 14 years and under. The Mann-Kendall trend test was used to investigate temporal trends and a t-test was used to compare continuous variables., Results: Both male and female age-adjusted mortality attributed to anal cancer increased significantly during the study period across all subgroups, including race (Black and White), US Census region (Northeast, Midwest, South and West) and age (15-64 and ≥65 years) (p < 0.001 for all comparisons). For each subgroup, women demonstrated significantly higher rates of mortality than men, except in the Black population, where Black men had higher rates than Black women (0.40 vs. 0.29, p < 0.001). Additionally, Black men had significantly higher mean mortality rates than White men (0.40 vs. 0.27, p < 0.001). The highest rates of anal cancer mortality were among geriatric individuals, especially women aged ≥65 years, at 1.18 per 100 000., Conclusion: The rise in anal cancer mortality and racial and sex disparities present a significant challenge for healthcare providers and policy makers. Introduction: The Atlas 2022 of African Health Statistics is a comprehensive tool that gives an overview of the health ecosystem in the African region. As such, it tracks progress towards globally agreed objectives, such as Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), assesses the capacity of African countries to achieve them, and helps policymakers identify gaps and areas requiring substantial reinforcement. Methods: We analyzed health-related SDGs’ key indicators in the Atlas 2022 of African Health Statistics. This platform is a nexus for consistent and comparable data sources across countries. A review of studies addressing the evolution of health-related SDG indicators in Africa was also considered for discussion and recommendations. Results: Hunger and different forms of malnutrition remain prevalent in the Region. Maternal and neonatal mortality is still high compared to other regions, with increasing incidences of non-communicable diseases and poor mechanisms to address mental health issues. Many inequalities are noted in violence against women, access to health services, or access to water and basic sanitation, which is exacerbated in rural areas. Regarding achieving the SDGs, the trend of most indicators shows they will be challenging to perform at the Regional level. However, a few countries are on track to achieve some goals. These results clearly show that countries have different experiences and, therefore, different progress in achieving sustainable development goals. The delays experienced by many countries in terms of development in other sectors, such as climate and the environment, poverty reduction and economic growth, equity and justice, etc., will make it even more difficult to achieve the health-related SDGs. Achieving these goals should, therefore, be seen as a transdisciplinary and inclusive process. Conclusion: Beyond the COVID-19 pandemic that has recently challenged health systems worldwide, the African Region is also dealing with several threats, jeopardizing its progress toward achieving the SDGs by 2030. Given the Region’s particular context, a readjustment of the regional targets and/or deadlines would be advisable to ensure they are achievable.

Adequate and transparent reporting is necessary for critically appraising research. Yet, evidence suggests that the design, conduct, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of oral health research could be greatly improved. Accordingly, the Task Force on Design and Analysis in Oral Health Research—statisticians and trialists from academia and industry—empaneled a group of authors to develop methodological and statistical reporting guidelines identifying the minimum information needed to document and evaluate observational studies and clinical trials in oral health: the Oral Health Statistics (OHStat) Guidelines. Drafts were circulated to the editors of 85 oral health journals and to task force members and sponsors and discussed at a December 2020 workshop attended by 49 researchers. The final version was subsequently approved by the task force in September 2021, submitted for journal review in 2022, and revised in 2023. The checklist consists of 48 guidelines: 5 for introductory information, 17 for methods, 13 for statistical analysis, 6 for results, and 7 for interpretation; 7 are specific to clinical trials. Each of these guidelines identifies relevant information, explains its importance, and often describes best practices. The checklist was published in multiple journals. The article was published simultaneously in Journal of Dental Research Clinical and Translational Research, the Journal of the American Dental Association, and the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Completed checklists should accompany manuscripts submitted for publication to these and other oral health journals to help authors, journal editors, and reviewers verify that the manuscript provides the information necessary to adequately document and evaluate the research. The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) has a long-established data linkage program that links NCHS health survey data with vital and other administrative records to expand the analytic potential of both the survey and administrative data. Integrating survey and administrative data provides a powerful mechanism for creating policy-relevant data resources to support the examination of factors that can influence disability, chronic disease, health care utilization, morbidity, and mortality. However, data privacy concerns impact the accessibility of NCHS linked data and thus its utilization. Nearly all NCHS linked data files are available only through the NCHS and Federal Statistical Research Data Centers. To minimize this barrier to access, the NCHS Data Linkage Program is engaged in a pilot project to create NCHS' first public-use fully synthetic data files. This initiative supports Evidence Act requirements, including tiered access to federal data. The talk will include an overview of the steps taken to generate the synthetic linked data and provide a verification process to support its analytic utility. The talk will also include a summary of NCHS’ exploration of other privacy enhancing technologies to increase partnership and data access.

Background: Amidst the global coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, Japan has faced a significant public health challenge, evident from the significant increase in mortality rates since 2021. This study described the variations in all-cause and cause-specific changes in mortality up to 2022 in Japan., Methods: This study used official Vital Statistics from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) to assess the impact of the pandemic on mortality trends. An analysis of all-cause and cause-specific age-standardized mortality rates (ASMRs) from 1995 to 2022 was conducted, employing the 2015 Japan Standard Population. Sex- and cause-specific ASMRs for a particular year were compared with those from the preceding year to assess annual changes., Results: Among men, the annual all-cause ASMR per 100,000 people increased from 1356.3 in 2021 to 1437.8 in 2022 (6.0% increase). Among women, the annual all-cause ASMR increased from 722.1 in 2021 to 785.8 in 2022 (6.5% increase). Compared with the period 2020 to 2021, COVID-19 (+29.1 per 100,000 people for men and +13.4 per 100,000 people for women), senility (+14.1 per 100,000 people for men and +12.5 per 100,000 people for women), heart disease, malignant neoplasms (for women) and "other causes not classified as major causes" substantially contributed to the increase in all-cause ASMR from 2021 to 2022., Conclusions: Further long-term monitoring from 2023 onwards is necessary, especially for conditions like senility, cardiovascular disease, and cancer, which may have long-term effects due to changes in healthcare settings, even though the strong countermeasures against COVID-19 were lifted in 2023.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that develops during childhood and can last into adulthood. Data from the National Center for Health Statistics Rapid Surveys System collected during October-November 2023 were used to estimate the prevalence of ADHD diagnosis and treatment among U.S. adults. In 2023, an estimated 15.5 million U.S. adults (6.0%) had a current ADHD diagnosis based on self-report; approximately one half received the diagnosis at age ≥18 years. Approximately one third of adults with ADHD took a stimulant medication to treat their ADHD in the previous year, 71.5% of whom had difficulty getting their ADHD prescription filled because it was unavailable. Approximately one half of adults with ADHD have ever used telehealth for ADHD-related services. Telehealth might have benefits for persons with ADHD, including helping them access behavioral treatment or medication prescriptions for ADHD. Introduction: This study estimates the prevalence and number of people living with Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia in 50 US states and 3142 counties., Methods: We used cognitive data from the Chicago Health and Aging Project, a population-based study, and combined it with the National Center for Health Statistics 2020 bridged-race population estimates to determine the prevalence of AD in adults ≥65 years., Results: A higher prevalence of AD was estimated in the east and southeastern regions of the United States, with the highest in Maryland (12.9%), New York (12.7%), and Mississippi (12.5%). US states with the highest number of people with AD were California, Florida, and Texas. Objective This report on the third round of the Research and Development Survey (RANDS 3) provides a general description of RANDS 3 and presents percentage estimates of selected demographic and health-related variables from the overall sample and by one set of experimental groups embedded in the survey. Statistical tests comparing estimates for the two randomized groups were conducted to evaluate the randomization. Methods NORC at the University of Chicago conducted RANDS 3 for the National Center of Health Statistics in 2019 using its AmeriSpeak Panel in web-only mode. To assess question-response patterns, probe questions and four sets of experiments were embedded in RANDS 3, with panelists randomized into two groups for each set of experiments. Participants in each group received questions with differences in wording, question-andresponse formats, or question order. Results Of the 4,255 people sampled, 2,646 completed RANDS 3 for a completion rate of 62.2% and a weighted cumulative response rate of 18.1%. Iterative raking was performed using demographic and selected health condition variables to calibrate the RANDS 3 sample to 2019 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) estimates. As a result, the overall demographic distribution and percentages of asthma, diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol for the calibrated RANDS 3 sample aligned with the percentages estimated from the 2019 NHIS. The distributions of demographic and healthrelated variables were comparable between the two randomized groups examined except for ever-diagnosed hypertension. Conclusion As part of a research series using probability-based survey panels, RANDS 3 included health-related questions with a focus on disability and opioids. HealthStats NSW (www.healthstats.nsw.gov.au) is a public platform of complex health statistics that displays information on the health of the New South Wales population taken from many data sources. The HealthStats NSW major enhancement project uses Mondeca software to create a thesaurus and ontology which improve search results and are used for automatic webpage creation to assist ‘storytelling’ and navigation. Improving the efficiency of managing content and automating Web content production frees up time and effort of specialised health statisticians and epidemiologists to develop new content and add value to existing content. This paper explores the creation of the thesaurus and its use for autotagging, creation of the ontology component and its use for webpage creation, tweaking of the automated system, and future options for the project. Introduction One of the ultimate goals of strengthening the health system is to achieve health equity. Vietnam is considered one of the ‘fast-track countries’ to achieve the health-related Millennium Development Goals, but research on its equity strategies remains inadequate.Methods Using Vietnamese official health statistics, we investigated inequity in four dimensions including health resources, service delivery, service utilisation and residents’ health status from the perspectives of income levels, poverty rates and subnational regions. The Slope Index of Inequality, concentration curve/Concentration Index, absolute difference and Theil Index were used.Results Four indicators showed ‘pro-poor’ inequality in health resources, including the per capita health budget, per capita health personnel, per capita health personnel at the community level and per capita hospital beds at the community level, while provincial hospital beds showed ‘pro-rich’ inequality. Two health service delivery indicators (delivery of antenatal care ≥3 times and proportion of community health service centres with medical doctors) show ‘pro-rich’ inequality, although two health status indicators, mortality and malnutrition rates for children under five, showed ‘pro-poor’ inequality. The Northern Midlands and Mountain Areas, and the Central Highlands were disadvantaged regarding service delivery and health status. Intraregional differences were the main factors contributing to the inequalities in delivery of antenatal care ≥3 times, provincial hospital beds and percentage of community health centres with medical doctors, with the Red River Delta and the South East region experiencing the greatest inequalities.Conclusion The overall level of health equity in Vietnam has increased over the past decade, although inequality in health service delivery has hindered progress towards health equity based on income, poverty and subnational regions. Targeted policies need to be introduced to reduce inequities relating to the health workforce and service delivery capacity.

Introduction: Africa bears the largest burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases globally, yet it contributes only about 1 % of global research output, partly because of inaccessibility and low maintenance of medical data. Data is widely recognized as a crucial tool for improvement of population health. Despite the introduction of electronic health data systems in low-and middle-income countries (LMICs) to improve data quality, some LMICs still lack an efficient system to collect and archive data. This study aims to examine the underlying causes of data archive inaccessibility and poor maintenance in LMICS, and to highlight sustainable mitigation measures. Method: Authors conducted a comprehensive search on PubMed, Google scholar, organization websites using the search string “data archive” or “medical data” or “public health statistics” AND “challenges” AND “maintenance” AND “Low Middle Income Countries” or “LMIC”. to Identify relevant studies and reports to be included in our review. All articles related data archive in low and middle income countries were considered without restrictions due to scarcity of data. Result: Medical data archives in LMICs face challenges impacting data quality. Insufficient training, organizational constraints, and limited infrastructure hinder archive maintenance. To improve, support for public datasets, digital literacy, and technology infrastructure is needed. Standardization, cloud solutions, and advanced technologies can enhance data management, while capacity building and training programs are crucial. Conclusion: The creation and maintenance of data archives to facilitate the storage of retrospective datasets is critical to create reliable and consistent data to better equip the development of resilient health systems and surveillance of diseases in LMICs.

Background In the USA, obesity in children and adolescents has become a major public health concern. Childhood obesity has been linked to various cardiometabolic comorbidities all through one's life. Owing to the significant increment in childhood obesity rates, there has been an urgent need for the identification of the correlates and antecedents of adiposity and the cardiometabolic risk to enable early prevention of obesity. As such, the objective of this study is to analyze obesity trends in American children and adolescents from 1999 to 2018 using the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) database, as this will enable the identification of various risk factors and early prevention of childhood obesity. Objective This study aimed to comprehensively examine demographic factors impacting obesity prevalence, including gender, age groups (two to five, six to 11, and 12-19 years), race/ethnicity, and poverty level. Methods The study conducted a retrospective analysis using the NCHS database from 1999 to 2018. Utilizing NCHS data, we examined the evolution of obesity prevalence among children and adolescents. The analysis focused on demographic variations, including gender, age, race/ethnicity, and percentage of poverty level. SPSS version 24, a statistical software by IBM Corp. (Chicago, IL, USA), was used for database summarization, graphical representation, and presenting prevalence trends across all participants. Results Temporal trends in obesity prevalence exhibited notable fluctuations from 1999 to 2018. Utilizing NCHS data, the study revealed demographic disparities in age groups, genders, race/ethnicities, and socioeconomic status categories. Gender-based obesity variations persist, with boys consistently surpassing girls in prevalence (17.5% vs. 16%, p = 0.0231). Varied age group patterns emerged, peaking at 18.7% in 12-19 years, 17.7% in six to 11 years, and 11.2% in two to five years. Racially, Hispanic individuals had the highest prevalence (22.8%), followed by Mexican (22.0%) and Black or African American-only individuals (20.6%). White-only individuals showed 14.4%, and Asian-only individuals exhibited the lowest (9.4%). Lower socioeconomic brackets correlate with higher obesity instances, particularly below the 100% poverty level (20%). The 100-199%, 200-399%, and 400% or more categories contributed 18.6%, 16.6%, and 11.6%, respectively. Conclusion Our extensive examination of obesity trends among American children and adolescents from 1999 to 2018, utilizing the NCHS database, provides valuable insights into the complex interplay of demographic factors influencing this public health concern. The study reveals age-specific variations, emphasizing unique challenges during adolescence. Gender disparities, socioeconomic influences, and racial/ethnic impacts are evident, underscoring the need for further study. Our findings present several policy implications regarding the development of interventions aimed at reducing childhood obesity rates in the USA. For instance, the findings indicate the need for policymakers to develop policy interventions aimed at enabling the prevention of obesity during early infancy stages. The findings highlight the need for interventions aimed at reducing the obesity disparities observed between genders and races/ethnic groups. Background Emergency department (ED) visits among adults have increased in recent years, with the United States reporting 140 million ED visits in 2021, equating to an overall rate of 43 visits per 100 people. This trend underscores challenges in accessing primary care and addressing underlying health conditions. Understanding the trends and patterns in ED utilization is essential for informing healthcare policy and practice. Objective This study aims to comprehensively analyze trends and patterns in ED visits among adults using data from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) database. Methods We conducted a retrospective analysis of ED visit data from 1999 to 2019, focusing on adults aged 18 and over. The prevalence rates of ED visits were examined across demographic, socioeconomic, and geographic groups using datasets retrieved from the NCHS database. Statistical analysis included one-way ANOVA and chi-square tests to assess variations in ED visit rates. Results This study's findings revealed a consistent increase in overall ED visits among adults, from 17.2 ± 0.3% in 1999 to 21.7 ± 0.3% in 2019. Disparities in ED utilization were evident across demographic and socioeconomic groups. Females had slightly higher visit rates, and significant racial disparities were noted, with American Indian or Alaska Native and Black or African American individuals showing the highest visit rates. Age-specific variations were observed, with young adults (18-24 years) and older adults (65 years and above) exhibiting higher visit rates. Socioeconomic status and health insurance coverage emerged as significant determinants, highlighting disparities in healthcare access. Objectives The Research and Development Survey (RANDS) is a series of web-based, commercial panel surveys that have been conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) since 2015. RANDS was designed for methodological research purposes,including supplementing NCHS' evaluation of surveys and questionnaires to detect measurement error, and exploring methods to integrate data from commercial survey panels with high-quality data collections to improve survey estimation. The latter goal of improving survey estimation is in response to limitations of web surveys, including coverage and nonresponse bias. To address the potential bias in estimates from RANDS,NCHS has investigated various calibration weighting methods to adjust the RANDS panel weights using one of NCHS' national household surveys, the National Health Interview Survey.
