Battista Guarini’s letters had a great fortune in print between the Nineties of the Sixteenth and the first decade of the Seventeenth century. Then comes a period of oblivion, ending in the Thirties of the Eighteenth century, when the letters were included into the draft edition of all Guarini’s Works, made by the printer Giovanni Alberto Tumermani. Although the three volumes of letters (edited by Apostolo Zeno in cooperation with Lodovico Antonio Muratori) were never published, the contribution of the studies made in preparation for printing is still relevant today. Specifically, Zeno found and transcribed letters, whose originals are lost; moreover, he copied twice the annotations that Giovan Niccolò Panizzari, a Guarini’s friend, had written at the first edition of the printed letters (Venezia, Ciotti, 1593). These annotations provide important information about the transition from letter-document to letter-work and about the author will. In this article I want to reconstruct the authorial intervention in Ciotti’s first edition and provide the Panizzari’s annotations scholar edition.

Este estudio investiga los modelos de escalera propuestos por Guarino Guarini (1624-1683) en su Tratado Architettura Civile (1737). A través de la lectura de los textos y de las pocas ilustraciones contenidas en el Tratado, se han elaborado varios modelos gráficos, destacando la configuración geométrica y las características espaciales de los tipos presentados. Estos modelos se comparan luego con los propuestos por otros tratados italianos, incluidos los de Serlio y Palladio. Aquí son significativos los métodos de representación geométrica utilizados por Guarini para dibujar las escaleras, así como su crítica al matemático español Juan Caramuel y Lobkowitz (1606-1682) y su Architectura Civil Recta y Obliqua (1678-1679), que Guarini analizó en términos de configuración espacial y decoración de la escalera.

The projects commissioned to Guarino Guarini by the Order of Regular Theatine Clerics left a mark of his extraordinary ability to blend rationality and lucid imagination of geometric shapes in which the close relationship between art and science stands out. Most of realized buildings have been demolished or destroyed because of catastrophic events. Therefore, the problem of knowledge of such manufactured products arises increasing and integrating the available data with those newly acquired in emergency situations. This paper proposes a digital platform aimed to analyze and catalogue Guarini’s heritage; the data sheets can be shared and easily implemented. A special section is dedicated to buildings no longer existing. The aim of this project project is to allow the faithfuls, visitors and the Fathers of the Order themselves to be able to "review" and "relive" the Theatine lost architecture.

Wychodząc od studiów postkolonialnych oraz od studiów nad postzależnością, autorka tekstu proponuje kategorię dyslokacji postzależnościowej, którą definiuje jako strategię narracyjną, polegającą na ulokowaniu postaci na styku dwóch przestrzeni, z których jedna nosi ślady historii lokalnej, naznaczonej sytuacją zdominowania, druga zaś jest przestrzenią odblokowanej historii. W części analitycznej autorka identyfikuje obecność dyslokacji postzależnościowej w dwóch tekstach: My zdes’ emigranty (1991) Manueli Gretkowskiej oraz Una primavera per a Domenico Guarini (1980) katalońskiej autorki Carme Riery. Bohaterki tych tekstów zwracają się ku kulturze europejskiej, noszącej cechy uniwersalnego rezerwuaru wiedzy i epistemologicznego fundamentu, w poszukiwaniu zasobów, które nadadzą sens ich tożsamościowej metamorfozie. Dyslokacja postzależnościowa pozwala zarazem uchwycić specyficzne pozycjonowanie się podmiotu wobec historii lokalnej.

At the court of Ferrara, the relationship between Prince Lionello d'Este and Guarino gave an impulse to a vivid interest in Greek and Latin culture. In particular, Guarino's attention, expressed in various epistles, is directed towards the study of history, since reading the deeds of the ancients, rescued from oblivion, shows the way to learn virtue and to escape wickedness. For this reason, Plutarch's Lives fulfil this cultural need well, since in them there were many examples of virtuous characters from the past, who had served the state loyally and honestly, and served as models to be imitated. History is therefore magistra vitae, because it is through it and for it that we know the events experienced in peace and war. From such examples of the past, Lionello will be able to benefit greatly, learning, for example, to recognise flatterers.

Guarini first develops a rigorous and systematic discourse on vaulted systems. In three treatises: Architettura Civile, Euclides adauctus, and Modo di misurare le fabriche, he described the geometric nature of the vaults, the principles of geometry and their practices in the stereotomy, and the measurement of the vaults’ surfaces and volumes, respectively. In this paper, moving from previous studies, the significant relationships between the Architettura Civile and Modo di misurare le fabriche are deepened, also in light to the theoretical bases established in the Euclides adauctus. Graphical analyses and reconstructive digital models, linking the texts to the original diagrams and drawings of the treatises, allow to highlight the role of geometry in Guarini’s theorization and the logic of shapes’ composition at the basis of his inventions, and constitute a knowledge base to recognize and interpret the geometric structure of the vaults in Baroque built heritage.

Nella sistematizzazione guariniana dei sistemi voltati, fondata sul ragionamento geometrico, assumono un ruolo primario le volte a lunette generate mediante il taglio di volte principali di differente conformazione geometrica e l’inserimento di unghie. Tale operazione consente di aumentare l’illuminazione naturale degli ambienti e di garantire ariosità e movimento ad atri e sale nei palazzi barocchi. Nell’Architettura Civile (postuma 1737) e nel Modo di misurare le fabriche (1674), egli illustra, rispettivamente, la genesi geometrica e la misura delle volte. Nel primo trattato, le volte a lunette emergono come tipologia feconda di variazioni formali e applicazioni negli edifici civili, nel secondo le superfici delle volte sono ridotte alle matrici geometriche delle singole componenti e presentano alcune novità rispetto all’Architettura Civile assumendo direttrici semi-ellittiche ad arco di circonferenza e di ellisse. Nel presente lavoro si esaminano e approfondiscono le importanti relazioni, nello sviluppo del tema, fra i due trattati guariniani, la cui complementarità emerge nel continuo riferimento al binomio Geometria-Architettura. L’analisi grafica e la modellazione digitale delle superfici consentono non solo il riconoscimento delle primitive geometriche sottese alla costituzione dei sistemi voltati e la verifica delle regole di misurazione che Guarini in gran parte ascrive a sé, ma anche il confronto con le architetture realizzate nel periodo del secondo ampliamento di Torino.

Even more than Francesco Borromini, Guarino Guarini has been taken by neoclassical critics as an example of the Baroque degeneration of an architecture that is opposed to the architectural logics as codified in the traditional canon. Francesco Milizia, the most rigorous among these critics, does not hesitate to describe Borromini’s architecture as a “reverse architecture”, while he sees in Guarini – which pushed Borromini’s excessiveness to the extreme – nothing more than a frenzy of extravagances. But Guarini, in addition to being an architect, was also a theorist, a philosopher, and, according to the cultural trend of his time, a mathematician. Milizia’s rationalist critique should be limited to the recognized forms of constructive reason. In other words, to an empirical and naturalistic approach. But if the term “reason” is understood correctly – as the author suggests – the thesis is reversed. Guarini becomes the perfect rationalist, as his ideal reference are the shapes of rational geometry, which, in a Cartesian view, represent the path of reason. By going back to some important concepts of the Occasionalism philosophy, the author connects the conceptual contents of the art of Guarini to the philosophical current of Cartesian scholasticism, basing his arguments on a purely visual interpretation of the form. In Guarini’s work, the rational abstraction is an art event, not just a cultural background. It is geometrical substance, where space – in line with the physics of Descartes and Malebranche, and with a stunning modern spirit – is extensive substance, a less dense matter, however not less real and architectural than the solid architectural volume, which the physical space helps to shape. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the usefulness of educational software among teachers in Italy (N = 559). The evaluation of usefulness was conducted on the latest and most popular web-based software used by European teachers, namely: Quizizz, Mentimeter, Wakelet, Padlet, Canva, Emaze, Answergarden, Jamboard, Coggle, Createley, Wordwall, LearningApps, Prezi, Kahoot, Plickers, Trimino, Dobble, Genial.ly, ClassDojo, Explain Everything, KhanAcademy, and Easelly. Based on data collected in the first half of 2022 using an online survey, it was noted that: 1) The majority of teachers are not able to evaluate modern software because they do not use such teaching resources as those listed; 2) About 9.3% of teachers rate the listed software highly; 3) Most commonly teachers use and also rate highly: Canva, Wordwall, Padlet, LearningApps, Kahoot, Coggle, Jamboard, and Prezi; 4) Seniority and workplace does not always differentiate the evaluation of educational software.

This original paper, based on data from the Erasmus+Blurred Lives Project, presents a new multi-dimensional categorisation model to describe negative online experiences, including forms of cyberbullying, based on a study of internet usage among over N = 2,500 adolescents with lower socio-economic status (SES) backgrounds across five European countries. The paper first sets out the rationale for the development of a new coding system, before describing the current study and nature of the survey data collected. There follows a description of the development of the new system and the series of reliability checks undertaken by the research team (N= 11, from 5 countries) and of the refinements made to the categories and codes. The resulting coding system is presented with consideration of the strengths and limitations, and description of two early pilot studies which have successfully adopted the new system.

The article focuses on the architectural works of Italian architect Guarino Guarini in Turin, Italy. Various topics discussed include authenticity of chapels in the region, preservation of Holy Shroud over there, contemporary art in Italy, symbolic aspects of the architecture and art installations in it.

There is ample evidence of bullying victimization-perpetration association. However, little is known about the role of socioemotional variables in reinforcing or mitigating it. There is a need to delve deeper into what victims feel and do that leads them to bully. This study aimed to analyze the moderating role of peer relationship management and anger regulation in the victimization-perpetration association, controlling gender and age. This cross-sectional study involved 874 Spanish middle school students (47.8% girls) aged 11 to 18 years (M = 13.92, SD = 1.45). The results revealed that the perpetration was positively related to victimization and negatively related to peer relationship management and anger regulation. In addition, peer relationship management can moderate the victimization-perpetration association, acting as a protective factor, when the ability of victims to regulate anger is sufficiently trained. These findings highlight the importance of designing effective prevention based on socio-emotional development to fully curb bullying.

The “breast-is-best” ideology (bonyū shinwa), which is still firmly rooted in Japanese consciousness, can cause women stress and pain, becoming a source of anxiety and even depression. When used in fiction, we can read it as a topos that highlights the great pressure experienced by mothers as primary caregivers in contemporary Japanese society. In this paper, I analyze the representation of breastfeeding in relation to the concept of care in the novel Chibusa no kuni de (In the Country of Breasts, 2020) by Fukazawa Ushio. I argue that Fukazawa’s novel tackles the issue of “breast-is-best” discourse on several levels. On the one hand, this novel describes the discomfort that both the lack and overproduction of breastmilk can cause in women, and also depicts women who lack the so-called “maternal instinct.” On the other hand, the novel also questions the traditional view of care as something that should be performed at the individual level in the intimate sphere. My analysis of Fukazawa’s work will highlight the link between breastfeeding, care, and power, while shedding light on the interdependence between caregivers and care-receivers.

This special issue examines representations and constructions of pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding in contemporary Japanese fiction in a selection of literary texts from the 2010s to the 2020s. It thus joins ongoing conversations and existing studies concerned with the representation of reproduction and motherhood in modern and contemporary Japanese culture (Saito, 1994; Seaman, 2016; Castellini, 2017; Harada, 2021). However, the essays in this section focus on depictions of pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding in terms of narrating bodies as a way to articulate women’s experiences of physical and psychological oppression within Japanese society and redefine new forms of mothering, fathering, and parenting. This research investigates the ambivalence and complexity around motherhood and embodiment in contemporary women’s fiction. At the same time, it explores the connections between literary studies and contemporary sociocultural dynamics of gender and family.

ABSTRACT The article aims to address the ecological transition into a model that integrates the Harrod-Domar Dilemma and the New Developmentalism according to a Green New Developmentalism perspective. To this end, this paper focuses on the green sides of the middle-income countries’ traps by introducing a novel concept of the ecologically sustainable output growth rate into the new developmentalism model developed by Oreiro (2023) to identify a balanced ecological growth path. Compensating for the price competitiveness losses produced by the exchange rate over-valuation, Ecological Structural Change and green finance allow for reversing the process of premature de-industrialization by improving the competitiveness of the manufacturing sector.

Granite extraction waste represents an interesting alternative material for porcelain stoneware production, but information on its influence presents several gaps. For this reason, two different wastes were selected: a coarser iron-rich material from magnetic separation and a finer one from conveyance and abatement systems. Both were physically and chemically characterized. Batches were formulated by partial substitution of feldspar and technological behaviour of bodies was assessed by simulating the industrial manufacture at laboratory scale. Tiles were shaped by uniaxial pressure and fired by fast firing in electric roller kiln. The effect of waste addition was evaluated during the whole production process. Fired samples were characterized in terms of technological properties, mineralogical composition and microstructure evolution. The formulation optimization reduces firing temperature getting commercial technological constraints. A further increase of finer waste content affects compaction and mechanical strength. The presence of micaceous particles after the firing process may act as cracks initiation.

The aim of this research was to compare the level of digital competence of future pedagogical staff (students of pedagogical faculties) in Italy and Poland. The research was conducted using original measurement tools and knowledge tests. The triangulation of techniques and research tools made possible the determination of the level of knowledge of the positive and negative features of the development of the information society, as well as the proficiency and frequency of use of the most popular websites and software. The research was conducted in the first half of 2022 using stratified sampling in both countries (N = 1209, IT = 604, PL = 605). Based on the data collected, it was noted that: (1) Pre-service teachers most often use software such as word processors and presentation creation tools; (2) This group very rarely uses software to create web pages, create visual material, or edit video; (3) The least problematic software that students use are word processors and multimedia presentations; (4) Among the typical ICT mediated activities that cause problems are: searching for and installing freeware (PL), installing and configuring parental control software (PL, IT), creating websites (PL, IT), searching for freely licensed images, and identifying plagiarism (PL); (5) Polish students have more theoretical knowledge about e-risks and the possibilities of the digital world than their Italian counterparts; (6) In most domains, the Italian future teachers rate their competences higher; (7) 53.81% of the respondents in IT and 38.68% in PL received lower results in competence tests, and handling ICT in selected areas causes problems for these students; (8) Both in PL and IT the frequency of ICT use and its seamless integration are predictors for assessing the effectiveness of ICT use in education.

Abstract Early childhood tumours arise from transformed embryonic cells, which often carry large copy number alterations (CNA). However, it remains unclear how CNAs contribute to embryonic tumourigenesis due to a lack of suitable models. Here we employ female human embryonic stem cell (hESC) differentiation and single-cell transcriptome and epigenome analysis to assess the effects of chromosome 17q/1q gains, which are prevalent in the embryonal tumour neuroblastoma (NB). We show that CNAs impair the specification of trunk neural crest (NC) cells and their sympathoadrenal derivatives, the putative cells-of-origin of NB. This effect is exacerbated upon overexpression of MYCN, whose amplification co-occurs with CNAs in NB. Moreover, CNAs potentiate the pro-tumourigenic effects of MYCN and mutant NC cells resemble NB cells in tumours. These changes correlate with a stepwise aberration of developmental transcription factor networks. Together, our results sketch a mechanistic framework for the CNA-driven initiation of embryonal tumours.

Castleman disease (CD) is a group of lymphoproliferative disorders that share common histopathological features yet have widely different aetiologies, clinical features and grades of severity as well as treatments and outcomes. Siltuximab is currently the only therapy approved by the FDA and EMA for idiopathic multicentric CD and is recommended as first-line therapy in treatment guidelines. Despite the extensive characterization of siltuximab treatment in clinical trials, available evidence from real-world practice is still scant. This collection of clinical experiences focuses on patients treated with siltuximab therapy, particularly regarding the idiopathic multicentric CD diagnostic work-up, and on treatment administration in patients with complex disease entering differential diagnosis with CD or concomitant diseases. Thus, these data help further characterize and improve the use of siltuximab in real practice in terms of effectiveness and safety of long-term administration as well as consequences of treatment interruption.
