Background: Transcatheter closure of atrial septal defect (ASD) has become the treatment of choice for most patients. About 5% of them suffer from transient headache episodes (THE) after the procedure, whose etiology is unclear., Aims: To evaluate risk factors for THE occurrence after transcatheter closure of ASD in the pediatric population., Methods: Eight hundred and forty patients, after transcatheter ASD closure with nitinol devices, from a single center, were included in retrospective analysis. THE was defined as occurring up to 24 hours after the procedure. A logistic regression model including age, weight, ASD diameter, device size, presence of nitinol coating on the device, fluoroscopy time, application of balloon calibration, device oversizing, and residual shunt after 24 hours was created to evaluate risk factors for THE occurrence., Results: There were 40 patients with THE (4.8%), 70% female and 30% male. The median age was 13 (7.35-16) years. In patients with headache, balloon calibration (BC) was performed more frequently (82.5% vs. 43.3%; P <0.001). The balloon waist median (interquartile range [IQR]), 19 (16-22) mm vs. 15 mm (12-18) mm (P <0.001), and device size median (IQR), 18 (13.5-22) mm vs. 14 (11-17) mm (P <0.001) were larger, and residual shunt after 24 hours (12.5% vs. 4.9%; P = 0.03) and a year (7.5 vs. 1.0%; P <0.001) were more frequent. ASD size and the prevalence of double/multiple ASD were similar in both groups. Age, BC application, no nickel release protection, duration of fluoroscopy, and device oversizing were predictors of THE (P <0.001)., Conclusions: BC during percutaneous ASD closure and the lack of a protective layer against nickel release on the device are risk factors for headache occurrence in the early postprocedural period.

Background: Transcatheter patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) closure has become the first‑choice method of treatment in the majority of patients. However, device selection poses a challenge., Aims: This study aimed to analyze periprocedural and 1‑year outcomes of PDA transcatheter closure performed with different devices throughout a 25‑year time period in a single center., Methods: All 1036 patients who underwent transcatheter PDA closure between 1993 and 2020 were included in retrospective analysis. Various devices were used: the Rashkind device (RD; n = 25), coils (n = 469), nitinol duct occluders type I (DO I; n = 300), type II (n = 32), type II additional sizes (ADO II AS; n = 209), as well as off‑label devices: vascular plugs and atrial septal and muscular ventricular septal defect occluders (n = 17). Data on 24‑hour and 1‑year follow‑up were available for 100% and 78.9% of the study patients, respectively., Results: The procedure was successful in 98.6% of the study patients, with a major complication rate of 0.2%. Complete PDA closure after a year was observed in 81.8% of the patients treated with RD, 93.7% of those with coils, and 100% of those with duct occluders. There were no differences between Amplatzer DO I (n = 159) and its DO I copies manufactured in China (n = 141) with regard to success, efficacy, and complication rates. Recently, ADO II AS has replaced coils and become the preferred device to close small‑to‑moderate PDA., Conclusions: Transcatheter PDA closure with all types of nitinol duct occluders is safe and effective, with no residual shunting at 1‑year follow‑up. Due to higher efficacy, ADO II AS has replaced coils in the treatment of smaller PDA.

Background: Atrial septal defect (ASD) type 2, according to current standards, is closed percutaneously usually after the child has reached the age of four to five years. There are limited data regarding such treatment in younger infants., Aim: We sought to evaluate the feasibility, safety, and efficacy of percutaneous ASD closure in children under three years of age., Methods: The research group consisted of 157 children less than three years old with haemodynamically significant ASD, who underwent effective transcatheter ASD closure in a single tertiary centre between 1999 and 2014. The mean procedural age of the treated children was 2.2 years and mean weight was 12.5 kg. In all cases nitinol wire mesh devices were applied (mostly Amplatzer Septal Occluders). ASD was closed using standard technique (except a few cases wherein the left disc of the implant was inserted initially into the right pulmonary vein to prevent oblique position of the device). Procedure-related complications were divided into major and minor ones., Results: Atrial septal defect was closed in 149 children: 97 with a single ASD and 52 with double/multiple ASD. The procedure was abandoned in eight patients (three with single and five with double/multiple ASD). No death or implant embolisation occurred during the procedure or follow-up, and there was one case of major postprocedural complications. Normalisation of the right ventricular diameter occurred in all patients during one-year follow-up. In the majority of children acceleration of physical development and resolution of accompanying morbidity were observed in follow-up., Conclusions: Percutaneous ASD closure can be performed safely in children under three years of age with low risk of peri- or postprocedural complications.

Background and Aim: Patent foramen ovale (PFO) may result in a cerebrovascular event - a presumed paradoxical embolism (PE). However, the presence of this phenomenon among paediatric patients was rarely evaluated. Transcatheter PFO closure was considered to be a method of treatment in such patients., Methods: For evaluation clinical data and long-term outcome, we reviewed records of patients below 18 years of age, with history of cerebrovascular event related to PE, who underwent procedure of percutaneous PFO closure in years 1999-2014 in our department., Results: Among 230 patients with cerebrovascular events who had PFO closed percutaneously, seven children (aged 12-16 years, five male) were selected. Indications for closure were cryptogenic stroke in two patients and transient ischaemic attack (TIA) in five patients. Diagnosis of PFO was established by transthoracic echocardiography, with right-to-left shunt (RLS) through PFO confirmed by transoesophageal echocardiography. Contrast transcranial Doppler (c-TCD) was performed preprocedurally in four patients, revealing significant RLS. For percutaneous closure of PFO different occluders (Starflex, Amplatzer PFO devices, Cardio-O-Fix) were used. Closure was successfully completed in all patients and no procedure-related complications were observed. Postprocedural c-TCD six months after closure revealed no significant RLS. During follow-up (3 to 10 years) one patient had an episode of recurrent TIA; however, in this patient paroxysmal atrial fibrillation was found during the follow-up period., Conclusions: Cerebral embolism due to PFO is uncommon in children. Transcatheter PFO closure in this group of patients is a safe and effective procedure. C-TCD is plausible technique for detection RLS and monitoring PFO closure efficacy in this group of patients.

Objectives: The aim of the study is to describe both professional and social activities of patients after heart transplant., Material and Methods: Ninety-five heart transplant patients treated at the Silesian Center for Heart Diseases in Zabrze were surveyed, comprising 29 women (30.5%) and 66 men (69.5%). The average age of respondents was 54.3 years old (standard deviation (SD) = 15 years); the average period that had elapsed since the heart transplant was 7.1 years (SD = 4 years). We designed a questionnaire as a tool for collecting information from patients., Results: Twenty-five percent of patients worked at the time of completion of the questionnaire. Eighty percent of those patients were working before and after the transplant, 20%--only after transplantation (p < 0.05). A different job position at a new workplace had 47.8% of patients, 34.8% of them had the same job position at the same work place as they had had before, 63.4% of the heart transplant respondents were pensioners. Eighty-two percent of patients had a certificate with a designated degree of disability--among them: 69% had a certificate for a significant degree of disability, 22%--for a moderate degree of disability. Among those surveyed, 52.5% said that their financial situation had not changed whereas 34.5% of those surveyed reported a change for the worse. Thirty-seven percent of respondents reported changes in family relationships. Seventy-seven percent reported that they received help from family members, as compared with 19% who did not., Conclusions: Only 25.3% of the patients treated at the Silesian Centre for Heart Diseases after heart transplant are employed and it is one of the lowest employment rates in this category of patients in Europe. One third of working patients have the same work place as they had before their operation. Heart transplant is a cause of changes in family relationships. Background: Idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (NS) presents as a hypercoagulable state, of which thromboembolism (TE) is a well-known life-threatening complication. Although TE is more likely to occur in venous vessels than arterial vessels, arterial TE is important because it may cause after-effects, including tissue necrosis and cerebral infarction (CI); therefore, prompt diagnosis and appropriate treatment are required. We report a pediatric NS case with multiple CIs. Case presentation: A 14-year-7-month-old Japanese girl was diagnosed with frequent relapsing NS, accompanied by headache and disturbance of consciousness during the second relapse. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and four-dimensional computed tomography revealed multiple CIs, vasogenic edema, and cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST). The patient had no underlying thrombophilia other than hypercoagulability due to NS and prednisolone (PSL), and no cardiac arrhythmia; however, a right-to-left shunt through the patent foramen ovale (PFO) was observed with the Valsalva maneuver by echocardiography. Therefore, we assumed that a potential cause of multiple CIs might be an embolic stroke, caused by thrombosis formed from a hypercoagulable state due to NS and PSL treatment and reached through PFO. Antiplatelet and anticoagulant therapies were administered for TE. She was treated with PSL and mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) for NS. Rituximab (RTX) was administered to prevent NS relapse after complete remission (CR). She underwent transcatheter PFO closure at age 14 years and 9 months because we considered that the right-to-left shunt through the PFO would be one of the risks for recurrent cerebral embolism when NS relapses. One year after the onset of CIs, an MRI indicated that the CVST had resolved, leaving no neurological sequelae due to CI; therefore, anticoagulant therapy was discontinued. And then she has been in CR for NS with only MMF therapy. Conclusions: CI is a serious complication in patients with NS. The pathogenesis of multiple CIs is various, including right-to-left shunt through PFO, in addition to the hypercoagulability due to NS. It is important to investigate and manage underlying risks such as PFO, besides preventing the relapses of NS by aggressive treatments using MMF and RTX, in patients with NS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recently, significant efforts have been made to create Health Digital Twins (HDTs), Digital Twins for clinical applications. Heart modeling is one of the fastest-growing fields, which favors the effective application of HDTs. The clinical application of HDTs will be increasingly widespread in the future of healthcare services and has huge potential to form part of mainstream medicine. However, it requires the development of both models and algorithms for the analysis of medical data, and advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based algorithms have already revolutionized image segmentation processes. Precise segmentation of lesions may contribute to an efficient diagnostics process and a more effective selection of targeted therapy. In this systematic review, a brief overview of recent achievements in HDT technologies in the field of cardiology, including interventional cardiology, was conducted. HDTs were studied taking into account the application of Extended Reality (XR) and AI, as well as data security, technical risks, and ethics-related issues. Special emphasis was put on automatic segmentation issues. In this study, 253 literature sources were taken into account. It appears that improvements in data processing will focus on automatic segmentation of medical imaging in addition to three-dimensional (3D) pictures to reconstruct the anatomy of the heart and torso that can be displayed in XR-based devices. This will contribute to the development of effective heart diagnostics. The combination of AI, XR, and an HDT-based solution will help to avoid technical errors and serve as a universal methodology in the development of personalized cardiology. Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute systemic vasculitis of medium -- sized vessels that affects infants and children. The etiology of KD is unclear. Typical KD requires the presence of fever of at least 5 days duration and coexisting ≥ 4/5 principal clinical features: bilateral bulbar conjunctival injection, erythema and cracking og lips, skin rash, erythema and edema of the palms and feet, unilateral cervical nonpurulent lymphadenopathy. If patient presents less than 4 of the principal clinical features, the diagnosis of incomplete KD should be considered. The basis of initiate treatment of KD is a single dose of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) with acetylsalicylic acid. But about 10--20% of patients do not respond to IVIG-therapy. Timely and adequate treatment of KD by IVIG and aspirin could help to prevent the development of coronary artery lesions, thats why diagnosis of KD is very important. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rationale: Arterial ischemic stroke is a general term for necrosis of brain tissue due to insufficient blood supply to the brain from various causes. About 30% of these cases are of unknown origin and are known as cryptogenic strokes (CS)., Patient Concerns: We report 2 female patients, one 5 years and 5 months old and the other 6 years old. Both children had clinical manifestations of CS, and after ruling out other possible etiologies, we finally suspected that CS was associated with patent foramen ovale (PFO)., Diagnoses: Case 1 was diagnosed with PFO, paradoxical embolism, and third-degree atrioventricular block, and case 2 was diagnosed with PFO, paradoxical embolism, and refractory mycoplasma pneumonia., Interventions: Case 1 underwent permanent pacemaker placement at the same time as PFO closure. Case 2 underwent conservative anticoagulation with poor therapeutic results and subsequently underwent PFO closure., Outcomes: Patient 1 underwent PFO closure, which resulted in relief of neurologic symptoms and no recurrence of neurologic symptoms after 10 months of follow-up. In case 2, the child's neurologic symptoms improved after PFO closure., Lessons: Although most children with PFO do not require targeted interventions, a few cases involving PFO and CS may benefit from closure of the foramen ovale., (Copyright © 2024 the Author(s). The objective is to evaluate and apply the robot-assisted endoscopic surgical technique for treatment of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in children. Clinical data of 106 children with PDA who underwent robot-assisted endoscopic operation were retrospectively analyzed from August, 2020 to March, 2022. Demographic and preoperative data were collected, including the patient's age, weight, diameter of the ductus arteriosus, operation time, length of postoperative hospital stay, postoperative complications and hospitalization cost. The age ranged from 6 months to 12 years with median age of 2.5 years. In addition, the weight ranged from 6.6 kg (kg) to 51.6 kg with median weight of 12.5 kg. Patients who received transcatheter PDA closure were also enrolled during the same period. Clinical features and perioperative data were compared between the two groups. All the 106 cases underwent robotically assisted surgery for PDA ligation. No one was converted to thoracotomy. The length of operation time was 15–84 min, with an average of 39.4 min. There was no obvious bleeding during the operation. The length of postoperative hospital stays were 1–3 days, with an average of 1.1 ± 0.2 days, which was significantly shorter than that of patients underwent transcatheter approach PDA closure (2.2 ± 0.2 days) (p < 0.05). The average hospitalization costs were US$ 8180 in the 106 patients, which were more expensive than that of ones who received transcatheter procedure (US$ 5076 ± 406) (p < 0.05). Only one case was found to have residual ductus shunt during early postoperative follow-up. One case was found with recurrent laryngeal nerve injury. The two cases recovered after 3 months of follow-up. The median duration of follow-up was 12 (1–20) months. No other short-term complications occurred during the follow-up period. Robotic surgical technique for PDA ligation in children is a safe, effective and reliable surgical method with less trauma, faster recovery and fewer surgical risks. This study aimed to compare the long-term clinical outcomes and costs between using either transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) or X-ray fluoroscopy for Percutaneous atrial septal defect (ASD) closure in children. An analysis was conducted on clinical data from children undergoing TEE-guided (n = 168) and X-ray-guided (n = 139) percutaneous ASD closure. Demographic characteristics, technical indices, acute complications, follow-up outcomes, and costs were compared between the groups. The results are that TEE-guided closure demonstrated shorter surgical times (20.3 ± 7.6 min vs. 32.8 ± 7.9 min, P < 0.001) and lower procedural costs ($3093.3 ± 451.5 vs. $3589.1 ± 219.4, P < 0.001) compared to X-ray guidance. Initial successful closure rates were similar between the groups (TEE: 98.2%, XR: 97.1%, P = 0.691). TEE guidance also resulted in fewer acute complications and reduced radiation exposure. TEE-guided percutaneous ASD closure offers advantages in terms of shorter surgical times, lower procedural costs, and reduced radiation exposure compared to X-ray guidance. These findings support the preference for TEE guidance in pediatric ASD closure procedures, with potential implications for improving patient outcomes and reducing healthcare costs., (© 2024. The support has been provided by clinical trials and guidelines for managing patent foramen ovale (PFO) in adults; however, the optimal approach is still unclear for treating PFO in pediatric patients. PFO and its associated clinical syndromes, imaging diagnosis, and management in pediatric patients were analyzed by a comprehensive analysis. Extensive research was performed using electronic databases, including PubMed, Cochrane, Web of Science, and EMBASE. This review includes the studies published until February 1st, 2024. A total of 583 articles were obtained, of which 54 were included in the comprehensive review. Numerous evidences have indicated that a right-to-left shunt through a PFO may be involved in cryptogenic stroke in children, although the connection between migraine and aura has not been substantiated by robust evidence. Children with sickle cell disease and a PFO were at higher risks of paradoxical embolization, rare syndromes caused by PFO could also occur in children such as platypnea-orthodeoxia syndrome, myocardial infarction, and decompression sickness. Contrast transthoracic echocardiography was deemed the most appropriate examination for children due to its favorable transthoracic windows, eliminating the need for anesthesia. This review suggested that the additional treatment was not needed as no evidence was provided for potential future complications linked to isolated PFO in children. Stroke remains one of the greatest health challenges worldwide, due to a high mortality rate and, despite great progress in its treatment, the significant disability that it causes. Studies conducted around the world show that the diagnosis of stroke in children is often significantly delayed. Paediatric ischaemic arterial stroke (PAIS) is not only a problem that varies greatly in frequency compared to the adult population, it is also completely different in terms of its risk factors, clinical course and outcome. The main reason for the lack of a rapid diagnosis of PAIS is a lack of access to neuroimaging under general anaesthesia. The insufficient knowledge regarding PAIS in society as a whole is also of great importance. Parents and carers of children should always bear in mind that paediatric age is not a factor that excludes a diagnosis of stroke. The aim of this article was to develop recommendations for the management of children with acute neurological symptoms suspected of ischaemic stroke and further treatment after confirmation of the ischaemic aetiology of the problem. These recommendations are based on current global recommendations for the management of children with stroke, but our goal was also to match them as closely as possible to the needs and technical diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities encountered in Poland. Due to the multifactorial problem of stroke in children, not only paediatric neurologists but also a neurologist, a paediatric cardiologist, a paediatric haematologist and a radiologist took part in the preparation of these recommendations. Objective: Children with congenital heart disease are at risk for malnutrition. The aim of this study is to investigate the changes in appetite, nutritional hormones, and anthropometric measurements of patients before and after the transcatheter closure of ventricular septal defect. Materials and Methods: Twenty patients whose defect was closed percutaneously and 26 children as healthy control group were included in the study. The anthropometric evaluation, symptoms, and blood tests of patient group were enrolled at initial and follow-up (1st and 6th month visit). Results: The median age of patient and control group was 27 and 29.5 months, respectively. Lack of appetite, inadequate weight gain, and fatigue were higher in the patient group at initial visit (p=0.027, p=0.029, and p=0.033, respectively). At 1st month after closure, the rate of decrease in lack of appetite, inadequate weight gain, and fatigue were statistically significant (p=0.016, p=0.031, and p=0.031, respectively). After closure, increasing body mass index, its z score, and mid-upper arm circumference were statistically significant at 1st month (p=0.008, p=0.018, and p=0.018, respectively). Insulin-like growth factor-1, insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3, and their z scores were increased compared to the initial values at 1st month (p=0.001, p=0.033, p=0.002, and p=0.048, respectively). Ghrelin levels showed a linear decrease; leptin levels showed a linear increase for 6 months. Conclusion: Children with ventricular septal defect are under the risk of malnutrition. One of the goals of our treatment plan for these children should be the prevention of malnutrition; therefore, the timing of interventional therapy should be before malnutrition develops [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The aim of this study was to assess the diet of children with Down syndrome (DS) and to identify potential dietary mistakes made by their parents. Materials and methods: The study was conducted among 195 parents of people with DS between November 2020 and March 2021. Data for the study were collected anonymously using the CAWI method. Results: 122 (62.6%) people with DS did not eliminate any nutrient from their diet. By contrast, in the study group, the following numbers of people reported the following dietary restrictions: 51 (26.2%) gluten, 56 (28.7%) lactose, 17 (8.7%) casein, 26 (13.3%) sucrose, 2 (1.0%) histamine, 2 (1.0%) lectins, and 1 (0.5%) dairy. The most frequent response for vegetable and fruit consumption was once a day, with 83 (42.6%) and 87 (44.6%) parents indicating this. The most frequent response for dairy product consumption was every day, with 72 (36.9%) parents indicating this, while 36 (20%) parents stated that their children do not eat dairy products at all. In the study group, the most frequent response for meat consumption was several times a week, this was indicated by 107 (54.9%) parents, while 1 (0.5%) of them said that their children do not eat meat products at all. The most frequent response for fish consumption was 1–2 times a week, this answer was indicated by 101 (51.8%) parents, while 13 (6.7%) said that their children do not eat these products at all. Conclusions: A majority of the subjects with DS are usually fed in a normal way, but nutritional mistakes are made by the parents. Aim: To describe our initial experience with the indications and results of the 5/7 Occlutech® duct Occluder (ODO, Occlutech International AB, Helsingborg, Sweden). A small incremental increase in occluder sizes is of utmost importance for successful outcomes, especially in smaller patients in whom protrusion of the distal disk towards the aorta should be minimised., Methods: Retrospective study of all patients undergoing PDA closure with the 5/7 ODO in three institutions since 2018., Results: The 5/7 ODO was used in 18 patients with median age and weight at the time of the procedure of 17.5 months (interquartile range 25th to 75th percentile 8 months- 4.4 years) and 13.6 kg (interquartile range 25th to 75th percentile 6.4-22.5 kg) respectively. All cases were successful. There were no cases of device embolisation, haemolysis, or flow disturbance of the LPA or the aorta., Conclusions: This small retrospective study demonstrated an excellent outcome of transcatheter PDA closure with the 5/7 ODO. Transcatheter device intervention is now offered as first line therapy for many congenital heart defects (CHD) which were traditionally treated with cardiac surgery. While off-label use of devices is common and appropriate, a growing number of devices are now specifically designed and approved for use in CHD. Advanced imaging is now an integral part of interventional procedures including pre-procedure planning, intra-procedural guidance, and post-procedure monitoring. There is robust societal and industrial support for research and development of CHD-specific devices, and the regulatory framework at the national and international level is patient friendly. It is against this backdrop that we review transcatheter implantable devices for CHD, the role and integration of advanced imaging, and explore the current regulatory framework for device approval. Introduction: Cardiac defects that result in shunting are the most common types of congenital heart anomalies. Although these lesions can be simple, they can cause significant hemodynamic changes and can be challenging to manage in neonates and infants. Over the recent decades, the development of new transcatheter techniques and devices has made it safe and feasible to manage such defects when indicated, even in the smallest of patients. Understanding these interventional procedures is essential in order to manage those patients. Areas covered: In this article, we review the techniques and experience for closure of atrial septal defects, ventricular septal defects, patent ductus aarteriosus,as well as coronary arteriovenous malformations and fistulas in neonates and infants. Literature review of PubMed articles was performed through January 2021, with focus on the latest data and results of the usage of interventional techniques in treating these lesions specifically in this age-group. Expert opinion: Significant shunting lesions can be particularly challenging to manage in neonates and infants. Newer lower profile devices will likely continue to be developed in the future, allowing their use for transcatheter interventions in even smaller patients and those with more complex anatomy. The foramen ovale is an important structure that ensures the functioning of the fetal circulatory system. The work describes process of atrial septum formation from the embryonic stage to the neonatal period. Human atrial septation is inefficient process resulting in a persistent foramen ovale in quarter of adult population. Imaging of the foramen ovale is a valuable parameter for the assessment of the fetal circulatory system with the possibility of capturing life-threatening conditions. The dynamic process of adaptation to extrauterine life is also reflected at the foramen ovale in the postnatal period. The persistent foramen ovale is usually clinically silent in the pediatric population, while in the perspective of adulthood it may be a factor contributing to thromboembolic stroke. Objective The aim of the present study was to assess the employment rate among kidney and liver transplant recipients in Poland and identify the predictors of employment. Settings The study was based on a self-prepared questionnaire containing five parts: demographic data and professional, medical, physical and psychological factors. This is a multicentre study involving four hospitals in Poland. Participants The investigated group consisted of 285 individuals (92 women and 185 men; 8 no sex given) aged between 18 and 45 years who underwent kidney or liver transplantation 1-5 years prior. Because of missing data, 279 questionnaires were considered regarding employment status after transplantation and 277 when sex differences were considered. Results A total of 120 patients (43%) worked full-time, 42 (15%) part-time and 117 (42%) remained unemployed, with a higher employment rate post-transplantation among men than women (60% vs 55%, p=0.04). More women performed white collar work (74% vs 41%, p=0.0003) and had to modify their working position than men (22% vs 7%, p=0.0118). Factors determining employment after transplantation included higher level of education (OR=27.08; p=0.0096), employment 1 year prior to transplantation (OR=11.05; p<0.001) and good psychological adaptation (OR=4.23; p<0.001). Men working the year before transplantation had higher education (OR=9.66; p=0.0356). Among men, more kidney recipients worked compared with liver recipients (OR=3.567; p=0.0417). Among women, age determined employment status (OR=0.89; p=0.0234). Conclusion Higher education is the most important predictor of employment after transplantation. Therefore, rehabilitation programmes including vocational activity should be directed to increase the level of education, both pretransplantation and post-transplantation if possible. The aim of the study was to assess correlations between the consumption of selected non-alcoholic beverages and the prevalence of tooth erosion among adults visiting dental practices in Krakow. Dental erosion in group 124 people aged 18-55 was assessed using BEWE, while oral dryness with a mirror test. FFQ was used to assess fluid intake, supplemented with questions regarding oral hygiene and socio-demographic factors. Dental erosion, mostly mild, was found in 38.7% of participants. Dry mouth (second and third degree in a mirror test) concerned 16.1% of subjects. Dental erosion was significantly more common (p = 0.01) among participants with dry mouth. More frequent consumption of sweetened beverages as well as 100% juices (fruit, vegetable) correlated with dental erosion. Overall consumption of such beverages and also milk, as well as daily fluid intake was significantly higher among subjects with dental erosion. Incorrect behaviors regarding the quality and quantity of drinks may contribute to tooth erosion among adults. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
